FedEx Ground Makes Talent Recruitment More Effective with AI
FedEx Ground is a package shipping company and is a subsidiary of FedEx. It wanted to make hiring easier, and more intuitive so that it could hire the best people.
“We need to have every advantage we can to recruit and retain talent. That’s what led us to the work with Google and its capabilities,” says Matt Tokorcheck, VP, Operations, Support and Engineering, FedEx Ground
The challenge was the narrow slotting of job roles. The openings were listed under specific headings which revolved around job types or departments–and if applicants didn’t fit or understand those categories, they didn’t apply.
Take, for example, applicants that came from the military. “Many of my fellow service members and veterans expressed difficulty in finding a job post the military because a lot of the skill sets that they’ve developed and honed over their military career aren’t as useful in the civilian world,” says David Henderson, Industrial Engineer, FedEx.
So FedEx Ground decided to work with Google Cloud’s AI-powered talent solution.
“As a job seeker when you come to our career site to search for jobs, that search is powered by Jibe and the Google Jobs API. And it really matches the keywords that a job seeker inputs with the jobs that are available at FedEx Ground, says Shailesh Bokil, MD, Talent Acquisition and Planning, Fedx Ground.

This makes job hunting a very intuitive experience for applicants.
“When I type into the search bar, I was immediately prompted to input my MOS, which is your military occupational specialty. And what it (the system) does is it takes the skills that are developed while serving in that MOS0 and matches them with skill sets that employers are looking. When I input 12A (an MOS), immediately I was getting results back for various engineer positions.

Over the last year, COVID-19 presented unforeseen challenges for practically every type of business and organization—including schools, colleges, and universities. For educational institutions, the pandemic was an unapologetic agent of acceleration, shifting one billion learners from in-person to online learning within two months.
The rapid transition to online learning exposed many schools’ lack of readiness for the new online learning environment. It also widened the learning equity gap for students, with fewer than 40% of students from low-income families having access to the tools required for remote learning.
For those who do have online access, today’s students expect everything from engaging and collaborative digital learning experiences to skills-based training for their roles in the future workforce. Expectations are also high for 24×7 multi-channel tech support across all learning devices, applications, and platforms.
In these remarkable times, education technology companies have an important role to play in supporting academic institutions and students. Indeed, this is already happening, as the EdTech (Educational Technology) market is nearly tripling, with total global expenditures expected to reach $404 billion by 2025. However, the success of these EdTech companies depends on their performance in a number of areas, including:
- Content and products: How quickly can they generate new content and react to learner needs with new products to additional markets for broader adoption?
- Personalization: How effectively can they leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to provide a personalized experience to all types of learners?

Here are a few examples of how EdTech companies are successfully using AI and analytics to capture this opportunity and transform their businesses:
- Build better products: iSchoolConnect is an online platform that lets students explore schools, courses, and countries where they might study, and makes higher education admissions accessible to students around the globe. The company leverages AI services to help educational institutions optimize their academic operations by accelerating admission processing by greater than 90%, while saving significant costs.
- Launch in new markets faster: Classroom creativity tools provider Book Creator uses AI APIs to enhance accessibility and improve the learner experience. “The broad suite of intelligent APIs enables us to deliver richer experiences, faster and more easily, without having to be experts in machine learning, drawing recognition, map embeds, or other areas,” says VP of engineering Thom Leggett.
- Scale businesses securely: Using DevOps and CDN [content delivery network] services, Chrome browser recording extension creator Screencastify was able to support eight times growth in users overnight amid the COVID-19 pandemic, while maintaining consistent total cost of ownership. These technologies helped the company rapidly scale operations in response to the overnight increase in demand from consumers and assure student data privacy and security on a budget. “We know this is just the beginning, as more educators rely on technology to deliver richer, more interactive curricula to students,” says CEO James Francis.
- Provide personalized learning and support: Smart analytics and AI can provide personalized support and recommendations for students, forecast demand, and predict shifts in learners’ preferences. Online learning platform Mindvalley uses cloud-based tools to understand and make decisions based on user activity and leverage machine learning to predict behavior.
Google Cloud is partnering with many of these leading EdTech companies, as well as industry-leading consortiums like Ed-Fi and Unizin, to standardize educational common data models and best practices for more agile and cost-effective integration of EdTech into existing environments.

Enterprise data warehouses (EDWs) are often deemed the most valuable asset in the data center, serving as the backbone of the business. The ongoing insight gained from these solutions has justified the significant up-front capital investments and ongoing operational costs, but the rigidity of the traditional EDW is forcing organizations to reevaluate their approach to analytics and business intelligence.
While legacy EDW solutions were all about throwing as much computational power as possible at a relatively static data set, with the inflow of new and valuable sources of data and the emergence of all-encompassing analytics initiatives, the success of today’s EDW solutions depends more on operational and resource agility than raw horsepower.
Being able to dynamically adjust to the needs of the business, integrate into operational processes, and quickly react to emerging opportunities can place an organization at a distinct competitive advantage.
Today’s EDW solutions must act as a global repository of information, provide the agility to scale up or down on demand, and seamlessly integrate with other analytics tools and services used throughout a data-driven organization.
Over the last two years, ESG has conducted detailed studies quantifying the economic value of Google data analytics services. The first evaluated Google BigQuery compared to on-premises Hadoop and AWS redshift. The second focused on Google DataProc compared to DIY Spark and Hadoop approaches. Here’s the next iteration of our economic analysis, extending the BigQuery study to incorporate a comparison to legacy enterprise data warehouses, both on-premises and in the cloud.
Through publicly available pricing and in-depth qualitative customer interviews, ESG was able to assert a base set of assumptions that power a dynamic model, incorporating up-front capital investments, deployment and migration costs, expected monthly cloud costs, administrative costs, and operational costs associated with legacy on-premises EDWs, cloud-based EDWs, and Google BigQuery.
The crux of the results show organizations can save up to 52% by using BigQuery over on-premises EDWs and up to 41% over cloud-based EDWs. Unlike legacy on-premises EDWs, BigQuery provides organizations with the key abilities that are essential to delivering a modern EDW solution, most notably the ability to integrate across other Google Cloud Platform services, including its market leading AI-based solutions and services.
Although not called t out directly in the published report, ESG’s models indicate that the savings achieved by migrating an on-premises EDW solution to Google BigQuery may actually be more cost effective than simply continuing to operate an existing on-premises EDW solution.

What are containers?
Containers are packages of software that contain all of the necessary elements to run in any environment. Containers vs. VMs: What’s the difference?
You might already be familiar with VMs: a guest operating system such as Linux or Windows runs on top of a host operating system with access to the underlying hardware. Containers are often compared to virtual machines (VMs). Like virtual machines, containers allow you to package your application together with libraries and other dependencies, providing isolated environments for running your software services. However, the similarities end here as containers offer a far more lightweight unit for developers and IT Ops teams to work with, carrying a myriad of benefits. Containers are much more lightweight than VMs, virtualize at the OS level while VMs virtualize at the hardware level, and share the OS kernel and use a fraction of the memory VMs require. Read more.
What is Kubernetes?
With the widespread adoption of containers among organizations, Kubernetes, the container-centric management software, has become the de facto standard to deploy and operate containerized applications. Google Cloud is the birthplace of Kubernetes—originally developed at Google and released as open source in 2014. Kubernetes builds on 15 years of running Google’s containerized workloads and the valuable contributions from the open source community. What is microservices architecture?
Microservices architecture (often shortened to microservices) refers to an architectural style for developing applications. Microservices allow a large application to be separated into smaller independent parts, with each part having its own realm of responsibility. To serve a single user request, a microservices-based application can call on many internal microservices to compose its response. Containers are a well-suited microservices architecture example, since they let you focus on developing the services without worrying about the dependencies. What is ETL?
ETL stands for extract, transform, and load and is a traditionally accepted way for organizations to combine data from multiple systems into a single database, data store, data warehouse, or data lake. ETL can be used to store legacy data, or—as is more typical today—aggregate data to analyze and drive business decisions. Organizations have been using ETL for decades. But what’s new is that both the sources of data, as well as the target databases, are now moving to the cloud. Additionally, we’re seeing the emergence of streaming ETL pipelines, which are now unified alongside batch pipelines—that is, pipelines handling continuous streams of data in real time versus data handled in aggregate batches. What is a data lake?
A data lake is a centralized repository designed to store, process, and secure large amounts of structured, semistructured, and unstructured data. It can store data in its native format and process any variety of it, ignoring size limits. Read more.
What is a data warehouse?
Data-driven companies require robust solutions for managing and analyzing large quantities of data across their organizations. These systems must be scalable, reliable, and secure enough for regulated industries, as well as flexible enough to support a wide variety of data types and use cases. The requirements go way beyond the capabilities of any traditional database. That’s where the data warehouse comes in. A data warehouse is an enterprise system used for the analysis and reporting of structured and semi-structured data from multiple sources, such as point-of-sale transactions, marketing automation, customer relationship management, and more. A data warehouse is suited for ad hoc analysis as well custom reporting and can store both current and historical data in one place. It is designed to give a long-range view of data over time, making it a primary component of business intelligence. Read more.
What is streaming analytics?
Streaming analytics is the processing and analyzing of data records continuously rather than in batches. Generally, streaming analytics is useful for the types of data sources that send data in small sizes (often in kilobytes) in a continuous flow as the data is generated. Read more.
What is machine learning (ML)?
Today’s enterprises are bombarded with data. To drive better business decisions, they have to make sense of it. But the sheer volume coupled with complexity makes data difficult to analyze using traditional tools. Building, testing, iterating, and deploying analytical models for identifying patterns and insights in data eats up employees’ time. Then after being deployed, such models also have to be monitored and continually adjusted as the market situation or the data itself changes. Machine learning is the solution. When it comes to the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), we have reached a tipping point. Technologies that were once accessible to only a few are now broadly available. This has led to an explosion in AI investment. However, according to research firm McKinsey, for AI to make a sizable contribution to a company’s bottom line, they “must scale the technology across the organization, infusing it in core business processes” — and based on conversations with our customers, we couldn’t agree more.
While investments in pure data science continue to be essential for many, widespread adoption of AI increasingly involves a category of applications and services that we call AI agents. These are technologies that let customers apply the best of AI to common business challenges, with limited technical expertise required by employees, and include Google Cloud products like Document AI and Contact Center AI. Today, at Google Cloud Next ‘22, we’re announcing new features to our existing AI agents and a brand new one with Translation Hub.
“AI is becoming a key investment for many companies’ long term success. However, most companies are still in the experimental phases with AI and haven’t fully put the technology into production because of long deployment timelines, IT staffing needs, and more,” said Ritu Jyoti, group vice president, worldwide AI and automation research practice global AI research lead, at IDC. “Organizations need AI products that can be immediately applied to automate processes and solve business problems. Google Cloud is answering this problem by providing fully managed, scalable AI agents that can be deployed fast and deliver immediate results.”
Translation Hub: An enterprise-scale translation AI agent
At I/O this year, we announced the addition of 24 new languages to Google Translate to allow consumers in more locations, especially those whose languages aren’t represented in most technology, to help reduce communication barriers through the power of translation. Businesses strive for the same goals, but unfortunately it is often out of reach due to the high costs that come with scaling translation.
That’s why today, we are announcing Translation Hub, our AI agent that provides customers with self-service document translation. With 135 languages, Translation Hub can create impactful, inclusive, and cost-effective global communications in a few clicks.

With Translation Hub, now researchers are able to share their findings instantly across the world, goods and services providers can reach underserved markets, and public sector administrators can reach more members of their communities in a language they understand — all of which ultimately help make for a more connected, inclusive world.
Translation Hub brings together Google Cloud AI technology, like Neural Machine Translation and AutoML, to help make it easy to ingest and translate content from the most common enterprise document types, including Google Docs and Slides, PDFs, and Microsoft Word. It not only preserves layouts and formatting, but also provides granular management controls such as support for post-editing human-in-the-loop feedback and document review.
“In just three months of using Translation Hub and AutoML translation models, we saw our translated page count go up by 700% and translation cost reduced by 90%,” said Murali Nathan, digital innovation and employee experience lead, at materials science company Avery Dennison. “Beyond numbers, Google’s enterprise translation technology is driving a feeling of inclusion among our employees. Every Avery Dennison employee has access to on-demand, general purpose, and company-specific translations. English language fluency is no longer a barrier, and our employees are beginning to broadly express themselves right in their native language.”
Document AI: A document processing AI agent to automate workflows
Every organization needs to process documents, understand their content, and make them available to the appropriate people. Whether it’s during procurement cycles involving invoices and receipts, contract processes to close deals, or for general increases in efficiency, Document AI simplifies and automates various document processing. With two new features launching today, Document AI can allow employees to focus on higher impact tasks and better serve their own customers.
For example, payments provider Libeo used Document AI to uptrain an invoice parser with 1,600 documents and increase its testing accuracy from 75.6% to 83.9%. “Thanks to uptraining, the Document AI results now beat the results of a competitor and will help Libeo save ~20% on the overall cost for model training over the long run,” said Libeo chief technology officer, Pierre-Antoine Glandier.
Today, we’re announcing these new features to our existing Document AI agent:
- Document AI Workbench can remove the barriers around building custom document parsers, helping organizations extract fields of interest that are specific to their business needs. Relative to more traditional development approaches, it requires less training data and offers a simple interface for both labeling data and one-click model training.
- Document AI Warehouse can eliminate the challenges that many enterprises face when tagging and extracting data in documents by bringing Google’s Search technologies to Document AI. This feature can make it simpler and easier to search for and manage documents like workflow controls to accommodate invoice processing, contracts, approvals, and custom workflows.
Contact Center AI: A contact center AI agent to improve customer experiences
Scaling call center support can be expensive and difficult, especially when implementing AI technologies to support representatives. Contact Center AI is an AI agent for virtually all contact center needs, from intelligently routing customers, to facilitating handoffs between virtual and human customer support representatives, to analyzing call center transcripts for trends and much more.
Just days ago, we announced that Contact Center AI Platform is now generally available to provide additional deployment choice and flexibility. With this addition to Contact Center AI, we are furthering our commitment to providing an AI agent that can assist organizations to quickly scale their contact centers to improve customer experiences and create value via data-driven decisions.
