Founder: Lola Han
Description: CultivatePeople’s compensation software, Kamsa, provides global market pay rate data and helps companies make data-driven salary decisions so they can attract and retain their most valuable asset: employees.
Why GCP: “CultivatePeople began using GCP when integrating SSO/SAML authentication after our SaaS product became a high priority. We were able to exceed our clients’ expectations and increase their level of trust in our platform’s capabilities. We’re currently investigating additional machine learning products, such as Cloud AutoML, that will allow us to quickly deliver exciting features.”
Note from the Founder: “I grew up with immigrant parents who value stability and are risk-averse. My parents discouraged me from starting my own company because they didn’t want to see me struggle financially or see my health suffer (due to stress). I felt strongly about what CultivatePeople could do, so I started the company as a sole founder in 2017 and watched it double in size year over year since. While the ones I love most may not have cheered me on initially, it was important for me to hang on to the encouraging words of former bosses, executives, and founders to keep me focused on my mission.
My advice for other AAPI founders is to be a “silent assassin” and believe in the mission and values of your organization. Always remember to stop along the way and:
1) Enjoy the journey by celebrating wins and giving yourself credit;
2) Follow your intuition—it’s (almost) always right;
3) Recognize and invest in your people regularly (ie. give increases more than once a year, if warranted);
4) Give regular words of affirmation to employees on even small achievements.”

Swit
Founder: Josh Lee and Max Lim
Description: Swit is a team collaboration platform that seamlessly combines team chat with task management by allowing teams to turn their conversations into trackable tasks and share tasks to chat with simple drag-and-drop functionality, ensuring everyone is on the same page and projects get done faster.
Why GCP: “Swit is a cross-category hybrid work tool for chat and tasks. This functionality requires more complicated and heavier architecture for performance. So, configuring and managing virtual machines was really challenging to scale up our systems, while handling occasional unexpected traffic surges and frequent updates. Eventually we divided our monolithic architecture into 35 microservices when we launched our official product. The migration to GKE took around one month, and it turned out to be well worth the effort—our systems became able to offer high scalability and enough resilience to keep its uptime no matter what happened. Now we’re operating 84 workloads and 252 microservices with high stability with remarkably low downtime – less than 0.00001%/year.”

Google Cloud Modernized Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development to Process 150K+ Unemployment Claims Per Week

When confronted with challenges, resilient organizations adapt and innovate to address changing customer needs. Through its partnership with Google Cloud, the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development exemplifies this evolutionary approach.
Just a few months ago, challenges created by the antiquated unemployment insurance (UI) system threatened the agency’s ability to serve constituents who lost their jobs during the pandemic. Now, and in the months ahead, that continuing evolution will transform how the DWD serves its constituents with the modernization of their UI system, which includes customer experience workflows, predictive analytics, and streamlining and expediting paper applications.
Like many workforce development agencies nationwide, last year, DWD experienced a deluge of claims filed in response to the COVID-19 economic fallout. Unfortunately, DWD’s legacy UI infrastructure — largely written in the COBOL computing language and hosted on a mainframe server – was no match for the volume and complexity of cases. Wisconsin’s multiple technology systems required a large amount of manual processing, with staff using spreadsheets to manually calculate benefit adjustments. As a result, the state just couldn’t keep up with the surge of claims, and it needed to pivot quickly to a new solution to keep up with demand.
DWD initially responded by staffing up call centers, hiring UI application adjudicators, and deploying other personnel–all told, hiring, contracting with, or reassigning more than 1,300 individuals. However, while this enabled DWD to respond to approximately 7 million calls per month, the massive number of incoming claims surged to create a backlog of more than 750,000 claims. Legacy technology issues continued to significantly slow the query-response time.
DWD leaders recognized that staffing alone was not the solution and that innovation was needed to overcome past, inadequate IT investment. To address the inherited issues, Wisconsin turned to Google Cloud. Working together, we were able to scale the state’s response to claims and speed up overall response time. We were also successful in screening out fraudulent claims so that the UI program could be administered–with integrity–to Wisconsinites who needed financial assistance.
Year-to-date, Wisconsin has now disbursed $2 billion in unemployment benefits, in addition to successfully clearing its entire 2020 UI backlog. As a result of our partnership, the state is now processing an average of 157,000 claims each week and releasing most payments to citizens within two to three business days. Before the new system was in place, the response time could be weeks or even months.
Here is how Wisconsin and Google Cloud are modernizing the state’s current legacy system through a modular approach:
- Artificial intelligence (AI)/ machine learning (ML) for predictive analytics: Through the use of Google AI/ML, the state is creating predictive analytics based on historical data to shorten adjudication decision-making for UI claims, enabling it to release payments to eligible claimants faster. Comprehensive data models and confidence scores analyze the backlog data to determine the shortest route to approval and payments, with a high level of confidence and accuracy. DWD is using Google Cloud technology to identify where in the process the claimant was getting stuck in one of the “hold buckets” for processing a UI claim. Using Google Cloud’s data and AI/ML tools, Wisconsin is able to identify problem areas and quickly resolve those issues. This informed DWD’s rewrite of the UI claim application process. And it also helped DWD identify fraudulent claims.
- Document AI (DocAI) for streamlining paper applications: DWD is also partnering with Google Cloud to streamline paper applications and fax documents as part of UI claims processing–enabling documents to be submitted online instead of by fax or hard-copy mail. Our DocAI solution helps Wisconsin staff make faster decisions by rapidly extracting critical data from documents, saving time, and removing manual processes, which allows employees to focus on high-priority activities.
These modernization steps in Wisconsin are resulting in a bold new vision for state unemployment systems across the United States. Through a combination of design thinking, deep partnership with state officials, and modern technology, DWD’s solutions are tailored to maximize benefits to the constituents they’re designed to serve. By joining forces with Google Cloud and utilizing modernizing technology to make informed, data-driven decisions, Wisconsin DWD is helping residents have a better experience that is easier to understand and navigate–all while better serving the community overall.
Contact Center AI (CCAI) with Agent Assist can Lower Opex and Handle 28% More Chats

Contact Center AI (CCAI) brings Google’s innovation in conversational AI to solve the most challenging customer service needs while lowering operational costs. More than a thousand customers have deployed CCAI and are steadily turning it on to power their production contact centers.
Today, we’re excited to announce that we’ve made CCAI even stronger with Agent Assist for Chat, now in public preview.
Agent Assist provides your human agents with continuous support during their calls and now chats by identifying the customers’ intent and providing them with real-time recommendations such as articles and FAQs as well as responses to customer messages to more effectively resolve the conversation.
Customers using Agent Assist for Chat have been able to manage up to 28% more conversations concurrently, while also driving up customer satisfaction by 10%. Additionally, we’ve seen them respond up to 15% faster to chats, reducing chat abandonment rates and solving more customer problems.
Agent Assist provides two key components to help agents manage conversations better:
- Smart Reply provides response suggestions to agents so they can quickly and appropriately respond to customer messages. These suggestions can be taken from your top performing agents as well as modified even further to ensure suggestions properly reflect the tone and voice of your brand. Agent Assist learns when and what recommendations to make by building a custom model that’s trained on your (and only your) data.
- Knowledge Assist unlocks the power of your knowledge base to provide articles and FAQ suggestions to agents in real-time as the conversation progresses. When using Knowledge Assist, agents no longer need to make the customer wait while they navigate multiple applications and data to find the resolution to the customer’s issue — the answer is delivered right to them.
“We’ve been very impressed by the chat capabilities of Agent Assist,” said Chris Smith, Vice President of Digital Service at Optus, one of the largest telecommunications companies in Australia
Optus has been using CCAI Dialogflow CX to send queries to virtual agents and sees great potential to use Agent Assist to provide recommendations to their customer support representatives. They expect Agent Assist to help minimize repetitive tasks by providing response and typeahead suggestions, helping improve the efficiency of their agents and the quality and consistency of service they provide.
Another customer, LoveHolidays, is using Agent Assist to support their agents and customers in the travel industry.

Analysts say online chat is becoming one of the most popular ways to reach out to businesses for customer support. IDC research finds that single-function contact centers worldwide are increasingly rare — in 2020, although phone/voice is still responsible for most interactions (at around 18%); email is responsible for around 13% of interactions, and live chat (without automation) is responsible for around 8% of interactions, according to IDC, Toward the AI-Powered Contact Center, Doc # EUR147017320, December 2020.
Deploying CCAI with Agent Assist for Chat
As part of Google’s Contact Center AI suite, Agent Assist provides a seamless handoff from chats managed by your Dialogflow CX virtual agents. If a conversation or customer requires a live agent, Agent Assist will help your team pick it up quickly and drive it to a satisfying resolution.
Historically, when managers saw contact center volumes increase they had two choices: allow customers to wait longer to speak to someone (lowering customer satisfaction) or bring on more agents (increasing cost to serve). Deploying CCAI provides contact center leaders with a third choice: equip agents with tools like, Agent Assist for Chat, to efficiently manage customer interactions while maintaining high quality service.
Global CCAI partners support Agent Assist for Chat
Agent Assist for Chat is a set of public APIs that your engineering team can integrate directly into an agent desktop to control the agent experience from end-to-end. For a more out-of-the-box solution, we have partnered with LivePerson and 247.ai to build Agent Assist directly into their agent desktops.

In the last year, there’s been an upward trend in cloud adoption in India. In fact, NASSCOM finds that cloud spending in India is estimated to grow at 30% per annum to cross the US$7 billion mark by 2022.
At Google, in our conversations with customers, discussions have evolved beyond cost savings and efficiencies. While those are still very relevant reasons for adopting cloud technologies, Indian enterprises are looking to Google Cloud to help them drive digital transformation, identify new revenue generating business models, reach previously untapped consumer markets, and build customer loyalty through greater insight and personalization.
Here are some companies and their stories.
Tata Steel: Mining data and maximizing its power
Tata Steel is a great example of an established enterprise from a traditional industry that is modernizing and embracing cloud computing. With an ambition to be a leader in manufacturing in India and a digital-first organization by 2022, Tata Steel believes smart analytics is key to enhancing operational efficiency and gaining business advantage.
To organize data from siloed systems across the organization and make it easily accessible to all employees, Tata Steel is using Cloud Search and plans to scale it to more than one million documents and 28 disparate enterprise content sources including enterprise resource planning (ERP) and SharePoint. In fact, Tata Steel is one of the first Indian enterprises to harness the power of Cloud Search to meet some of the most aggressive ingestion demands, with indexing durations reduced from weeks to seconds.
They are also leveraging Google Cloud Platform (GCP) services like Google Cloud Storage and BigQuery to build their data lake and enterprise data warehouse so they can take advantage of advanced analytics and machine learning. Managed services such as AI Platform further enable Tata Steel to manage end-to-end AI/ML workflows within the GCP console. This complements their existing on-premise reporting and analytics tools, and brings data management to the forefront of everything they do—from forecasting market demand to predictive equipment maintenance.
“Digital is not just a goal, it’s become a way of life. We are digitizing everything from the deployment of factory vehicles to improving material throughput to marketing and sales. As a result, we have petabytes of structured and unstructured data that is not only waiting to be mined, but that we can generate intelligence from to create opportunities across our multiple lines of business using GCP,” said Sarajit Jha, Chief Business Transformation & Digital Solutions at Tata Steel.
Helping L&T Financial Services reach customers in rural communities
In rural communities, quick access to financial services can make a tremendous difference to livelihoods. L&T Financial Services provides farm-equipment finance, micro loans and two-wheeler finance to consumers across rural India backed by a strong digital and analytics platform. Their digital-loan approval app, which runs on GCP, makes it significantly faster and easier for people to apply for financial assistance to purchase important things such as farming equipment and two-wheelers. It also helps rural women entrepreneurs get quicker access to funds for their businesses through micro loans.
L&T Financial found G Suite to be a far better collaborative tool to help staff work together efficiently. Employees can interact with each other in real time using Hangouts Meet, and the task of information sharing is more seamless and secure through Drive. BigQuery also helps L&T Financial Services generate behavior scorecards to track credit quality of its micro-loan customers.
“Cloud is the technology that enables us to achieve scale and reach. Today there are countless data points available about rural consumers which enable us to personalize our products to serve them better. With access to faster compute power, we can also on-board consumers more efficiently. Our rural businesses have clocked a disbursement CAGR of 60% over the past three years.” said Sunil Prabhune, Chief Executive-Rural Finance, and Group Head-Digital, IT and Analytics, L&T Financial Services.
Creating conversational connections for Digitate’s customers
Digitate, a venture of TCS (Tata Consultancy Services), has integrated Dialogflow into its flagship brand ignio, an award-winning artificial intelligence platform for driving IT operations, workload operations and ERP operations for diverse enterprises. This integration is the next step in ignio’s product development journey, and will enable users to chat or talk with ignio to detect issues, triage problems, resolve them and even predict system behavior.

Indian enterprises going G Suite
The base of Indian enterprises that are making the switch to G Suite to streamline their productivity and collaboration also continues to grow. Sharechat, BookMyShow, Hero MotorCorp, DB Corp and Royal Enfield are now able to move faster within their organizations, using intelligent, cloud-based apps to transform the way they work.

ML Workflow Made Simple: How to Automate ML Experiment Tracking with Vertex AI Experiments Autologging

Practical machine learning (ML) is a trial and error process. ML practitioners compare different performance metrics by running ML experiments till you find the best model with a given set of parameters. Because of the experimental nature of ML, there are many reasons for tracking ML experiments and making them reproducible including debugging and compliance.
But tracking experiments is challenging: you need to organize experiments so that other team members can quickly understand, reproduce and compare them. That adds overhead that you don’t need.
We are happy to announce Vertex AI Experiments autologging, a solution which provides automated experiment tracking for your models, which streamlines your ML experimentation
With Vertex AI Experiments autologging, you can now log parameters, performance metrics and lineage artifacts by adding one line of code to your training script without needing to explicitly call any other logging methods.
How to use Vertex AI autologging
As a data scientist or ML practitioner, you conduct your experiment in a notebook environment such as Colab or Vertex AI Workbench. To enable Vertex AI Experiments autologging, you call aiplatform.autolog() in your Vertex AI Experiment session. After that call, any parameters, metrics and artifacts associated with model training are automatically logged and then accessible within the Vertex AI Experiment console.
Here’s how to enable autologging in your training session with a Scikit-learn model.

Vertex AI SDK autologging uses MLFlow’s autologging in its implementation and it supports several frameworks including XGBoost, Keras and Pytorch Lighting. See documentation for all supported frameworks.
Vertex AI Experiments autologging automatically logs model time series metrics when you train models along multiple epochs. That’s because of the integration between Vertex AI Experiments autologging and Vertex AI Tensorboard.
Furthermore, you can adapt Vertex AI Experiments autologging to your needs. For example, let’s say your team has a specific experiment naming convention. By default, Vertex AI Experiments autologging automatically creates Experiment Runs for you without requiring you to call `aiplatform.start_run()` or `aiplatform.end_run()`. If you’d like to specify your own Experiment Run names for autologging, you can manually initialize a specific run within the experiment using aiplatform.start_run() and aiplatform.end_run() after autologging has been enabled.
