Mercari’s Big Leap: Supercharging Growth with Google Cloud’s BigQuery

When peer-to-peer marketplace Mercari came to the US in 2014, it had its work cut out for it. Surrounded by market giants like eBay, Craigslist, and Wish, Mercari needed to carve out an approach to compete for new users. Furthermore, Mercari wanted to build a network for buyers and sellers to return to, rather than a site for individual specialty purchases.
As an online marketplace that connects millions of people across the U.S. to shop and sell items of value no longer being used, Mercari is built for the everyday shopper and casual seller. Two teams, Machine Learning (ML) team and Marketing Technology specialists, both led by Masumi Nakamura, Mercari VP of Engineering, saw an opportunity to supercharge Mercari’s growth in the US by leveraging their first-party data in BigQuery and connecting predictive models built in Google Cloud directly to marketing channels, such as churn predictions and item recommendations for email campaigns, and LTV predictions to optimize paid media. Churn predictions could be used to target marketing communications, and item recommendations could be used to personalize the content of those communications at the user level. By fully utilizing cloud computing services, they could grow sustainably and flexibly, focusing their team’s efforts where they belonged — user understanding and personalized marketing.
In 2018, the Mercari US team engaged GrowthLoop, formerly Flywheel Software, experts in leveraging first-party customer data for business growth. Working exclusively in Google Cloud and BigQuery, GrowthLoop helped Masumi transform Marketing Technology at Mercari in the US.
Use cases: challenges
Masumi and the ML team’s primary goal aimed to reduce churn across buyers and sellers. Customers would make an initial purchase, but repurchase and resale rates were lower than the team hoped for. The ML team, led by Masumi, was confident that if they could get customers to make a second and third purchase, they could drive strong lifetime value (LTV).
Despite the team’s robust data science capabilities and investments in a data warehouse (BigQuery), they were missing the ability to streamline efforts for efficient audience segmentation and targeting. Like most companies looking to utilize data for marketing, the team at Mercari had to engage with engineering in order to build out customer segments for campaign launches and testing. From start to finish, launching a single campaign could take three months.
In short, Mercari needed a way to speed up the process across the teams at Mercari. How could they turn the team’s predictions into active marketing experiments with greater velocity and agility?
Solution: BigQuery and GrowthLoop supercharge growth across the customer lifecycle
With their strong data engineering foundation and BigQuery already in place, the Mercari team began addressing their needs step-by-step. First, they used predictions to identify retention features, then built out initial segment definitions based on those features. From there, the team designed and launched experiments and measured their performance, refining as they went. By providing Mercari’s marketing team with the ability to build their own customer lists that leveraged predictive models without requiring continuous support from other teams’ data engineers and business intelligence analysts, GrowthLoop enabled them to address churn and acquisition with a single, self-serve solution.

The dynamic duo: GrowthLoop and BigQuery
- Customer 360: GrowthLoop enabled Mercari to combine their data sources into a single view of their customers in BigQuery, then connected them to marketing and sales channels via GrowthLoop’s platform. Notably, Mercari is able to leverage its own complex data model, which was ideal for a two-sided marketplace. This is shown in the “Collect & Transform” stage in the architecture diagram above.
- Predictive models: GrowthLoop activated predictions that had been snapshotted by Mercari’s team in BigQuery. The Mercari ML team used Jupyter notebooks offering part of Google Vertex AI Workbench to build user churn and customer lifetime value (CLTV) prediction models, then productionized them using Cloud Composer to deploy Airflow DAGs, which wrote the predictions back to BigQuery for targeting, and triggered exports to destination channels using Pub/Sub. This is shown in the “Intelligence” stage of the architecture diagram above.
- Extensible measurement and data visualization: Since GrowthLoop writes all audience data back to BigQuery, the Mercari analytics team can conduct performance analysis on metrics from revenue to retention. They are able to use GrowthLoop’s performance visualization in-app, but they are also able to create custom data visualizations with Looker Studio. This is also shown in the “Intelligence” stage of the architecture diagram.
- Seamless routing and activation: With GrowthLoop’s audience platform connected directly to Customer 360 and the predictive model’s results in BigQuery, the marketing team is able to launch and sync audiences and their personalization attributes across all of Mercari’s major marketing, sales and product channels, such as Braze, Google Ads and other destinations. This is shown in the “Routing” and “Activate” stage of the architecture diagram.

Predictive modeling puts the burn on churn

In collaboration with GrowthLoop, Mercari began analyzing user data in BigQuery via Vertex AI Workbench to identify patterns across churned customers. The teams evaluated a range of attributes like the customer acquisition channel, categories browsed or purchased from, and whether or not they had any saved searches while shopping. Comparing various models and performance metrics, the teams selected the best model for accurately predicting when a buyer or seller was at risk to churn. For sellers, they evaluated audience members by the time elapsed since their last sale – for buyers, the time since their last purchase.
These churn prediction scores could then be applied to data pipelines that would feed into GrowthLoop’s audience builder. Audience members with a high likelihood to churn would be segmented into their own group and from there, Mercari could target those users with relevant paid media and email campaigns.
By partnering with GrowthLoop, Mercari was able to simultaneously bridge the gap between the data and marketing teams – and reduce the time between segmentation and campaign launch from months to just a few days.

Creating the audience within the audience
Once the team had successfully created a model to predict churn across buyers and sellers, Mercari needed to launch retargeting campaigns to measure their ability to reduce churn. Each of their ongoing experiments features tailored segments along with automatic A/B testing. With analytics and activation all under one roof, the marketing team at Mercari could craft audiences and begin measuring the impact of their targeted campaigns. Since starting their work with GrowthLoop, the Mercari team has created over 120 audiences.

Making segmentation smarter
Mercari’s first audiences leveraging GrowthLoop were sent to Braze to supercharge email campaigns and coupons with churn predictions and automated campaign performance evaluations. Then, Mercari shifted its focus to Facebook for paid media retargeting, using GrowthLoop’s lifecycle segmentation framework to target customers at the right step in their user journey. Lastly, Mercari moved its focus to Google Ads, where they used GrowthLoop to implement new segmentation models based on product category propensity. Mercari had long used Google Ads for product listing ads, and with GrowthLoop, Mercari was able to define more powerful product propensity segments and measure custom incremental lift metrics.

Finding new users in the haystack
Finally, in addition to preventing churn and driving retention, the Mercari team also wanted to boost user acquisition. They were having trouble measuring performance of UA campaigns due to new iOS and Facebook data privacy restrictions that made measuring campaign attribution impossible for many users. Using the familiar stack of Vertex AI Workbench for analysis, performance analysis on campaign data in BigQuery, and Airflow DAGs deployed via Cloud Composer to productionize the data pipelines, GrowthLoop enabled the team to activate targeted campaigns based on a user’s geographical location. In this way, Mercari could make decisions about their UA campaigns using incrementality analysis between geographic regions rather than attribution data, thus preserving user privacy.
The Mercari approach to customer data activation and acquisition
Other marketplace retailers can learn from Mercari’s successes activating data from BigQuery with GrowthLoop. Here are a few best practices to apply:
Identify your team’s needs and existing strengths
Mercari knew that their team had built out a strong foundation for data analysis within BigQuery. They also knew that their process was missing a key component that would allow them to activate that data. In order to achieve similar results, work to evaluate the strength of your team and your data – and define exactly what you aim to achieve with customer segmentation.
Partner with the right providers
With BigQuery, the Mercari team had all of their data centralized in one single location, simplifying the process for predictive modeling, segmentation, and activation. By partnering with GrowthLoop, this centralized data could be activated with ease across Mercari’s marketing teams. Know your audience
With a deeper understanding of their customers, Mercari was able to see nearly immediate value. We meet daily with contact center owners and customer experience (CX) execs across all industries, geographies, and business sizes. Looking back at these conversations, it’s crystal clear that 2022 was a high-stakes year for call centers, with three primary challenges trending across all customers and continuing in 2023:
- Many organizations feel pressure to rapidly scale up their call center operations in response to macroeconomic changes. Uncertain conditions are forcing Contact Centers to be ever more cost-effective, and to find ways to generate revenue for the business.
- End users are increasingly demanding and less forgiving when it comes to CX. Users have a choice, and they expect brands to meet them where they are with superior experiences. Connecting with customers where they engage is one of the key components of superior CX—customers should not have to go through elaborate processes or unhelpful phone trees to get help but should rather have service available quickly and easily in their preferred channels. Consumers demand more intimate ways of connecting with brands and Conversational AI can create that critical interaction medium.
- Organizations understand that AI can help address these challenges. However, many business leaders remain unsure how to successfully make the journey. A growing number of offerings are on the market, but many don’t deliver on their promise, with long and expensive integration requirements and unpredictable and underwhelming outcomes.
Helping our customers successfully address these challenges and opportunities was one of our top priorities last year and will continue to be a significant focus in coming months. In this blog post, we’ll review our Contact Center AI (CCAI) news from last year, as a primer for 2023.
Looking back: Why 2022 was a big year for Contact Center AI
In 2022, we increased our strategic investment in CCAI, including expanding it to include a comprehensive, end-to-end contact center solution suite that is user-first, AI-first, and cloud-first. We launched Contact Center AI Platform, our Contact Center as a Service (CCaaS) offering, as part of the CCAI product suite that offers a modern, turnkey solution, designed with user-first, AI-first, and cloud-first design. During Google Cloud Next ‘22, we shared lots of great content on how organizations can use CCAI to improve customer experiences, including these breakout sessions:
- Delight customers in every interaction with Contact Center AI
- Power new voice enabled interfaces with applications with Google Cloud’s speech solutions
We also got a chance to hear how customers are using CCAI to better reach their own customers, including Wells Fargo and TIAA. We partnered with CDW to discuss Providing Better Customer Experiences and with Quantiphi in a webinar called “Elevating the Banking Experience with CCAI Platform.” Just recently, our customer Segra shared their success story.
Through these customer interactions, three key priorities have surfaced as we look forward to 2023: Elevate the customer experience, bring new forms of AI to drive new automation and accelerate time to value.
Looking forward: Elevate CX, integrate new forms of AI, accelerate time to value
1. User-first: Meet them where they are with elevated Customer Experience.
As we have learned, users expect that brands meet them where they are and on their own terms and expectations. To do that, brands must integrate with and adopt the latest user-centric technologies and product best practices from consumer mobile and web apps. Enterprise B2C can’t exist anymore in a parallel world of different and often inferior user experience. Google has over 20 years of experience in building such consumer experiences, with multiple products successfully serving billions of users. Bringing these capabilities and experiences from our consumer products and research teams to our cloud offerings was a key component for our product offerings in 2022 and is a big part of our key investments in 2023. Moreover, a vast majority of CX user journeys start with a query on Google Search or YouTube. Connecting with the users at that point, even before they reach out directly to the contact center is a win-win, saving money for the brand and delivering immediate value to the user. By focusing on the user we created a superior integrated omnichannel experience.
2. AI-first and cloud-first: Quality contact center growth depends on transforming to modern, Cloud, AI solutions.
For contact centers to evolve, they need to transform from cost centers to revenue generators. That requires modern Cloud and AI solutions. Conversational data spans across all parts of the contact center, opening new ways to generate value. Cloud capabilities of privacy, security and scale can enable personalized CX across channels, enabling key omnichannel experiences. From a study by McKinsey: “Cross-channel integration and migration issues continue to hamper progress. For example, 77 percent of survey respondents report that their organizations have built digital platforms, but only 10 percent report that those platforms are fully scaled and adopted by customers. Only 12 percent of digital platforms are highly integrated, and, for most organizations, only 20 percent of digital contacts are unassisted.” Traditional telephony technologies are becoming commoditized and struggle to keep up with ever more complex rule based systems. Leaders in applicative AI and Cloud technology are stepping up as the new partners for brands who understand they need to take the leap to the next generation CX solutions. .
3. Accelerating time to value while future proofing investments with predictable and measurable value
Reducing upfront implementation investment and accelerating time to value can be a challenge for contact center solutions. Scaling Cloud and AI can provide a faster path advanced conversational AI, can help address these challenges. Let’s look at three examples:
- Out of the Box(OOTB) integrated transcription, chat and voice summarization, and topic modeling — This saves customers money by reducing agent handling time for every chat and call, as well as providing valuable insights that can be used for quality management, contact center optimization and automation, agent and user churn prediction, business insights, and revenue opportunities.
- AI based chat and voice calls steering paired with info-seeking virtual agents — Together these deliver higher Customer Satisfaction at scale while reducing cost – by significantly reducing waiting queues and being routed to the wrong agent, as well as automating away total handling time.
- Reduced time to full automation — Reduce the complexity of conversation modeling, prebuilt components and APIs for shorter time to value and more predictable outcomes, and metrics driven ML-Dev & QA tools and playbooks.
With these new capabilities, our customers can now see results as soon as they implement CCAI. We’re excited to get our customers to where they want to be faster!

Cloudbakers and Comanche County Memorial Hospital transitioned 2,000 employees to Google Workspace to improve collaboration, reduce costs, and increase security. By implementing a system that requires less maintenance while enabling mobile access to data and true collaboration, Comanche County Memorial Hospital saves $175,000 annually on licenses and helps medical professionals spend more time with patients.

Accessing previously locked down medical data
Google Cloud and Quantiphi supported advances in cloud-based machine learning services to reduce infrastructure costs, unlock new paths of treatment, and dramatically reduce the amount of time it takes to evaluate scanned imagery following a stroke. John Hopkins University BIOS Division has been working on medical imaging to accelerate insights from scans on approximately 500 patients from 2,500 hours to 90 minutes, and lead to more accurate decision-making for brain injury patients that will ultimately improve medical outcomes.

With the help of MediaAgility, TRIARQ migrated to Google Cloud to modernize their platform, build new applications, and expand their global footprint. Now, the portal generates 30,000 new analytical views each day that can help inform private and public sector decision making for reopenings, closures, hot spots, and many other population health management activities.

Today we’re hosting our Retail & Consumer Goods Summit, a digital event dedicated to helping leading retailers and brands digitally transform their business. For me, this is a personally exciting moment, as I see tremendous opportunities for those companies that choose to focus on their customers and leverage technology to elevate experiences.

Let me share a bit more about the topics we’ll discuss in that session.
In retail specifically, digital-first shopping journeys are blurring the lines between the physical and digital brand experience. Shoppers want to know what’s available before they visit your stores, and they expect fulfillment options like curbside pickup. We see this when tracking trends for interest in curbside pickup or in-stock items.

This has left many retailers asking how they can get smarter with their data, tackle the $300 billion dollar problem of “search abandonment,” move faster to create new customer experiences, and do a better job of connecting their employees and customers – with confidence.
Our team has been spending time thinking about how we can rise and succeed in this new era together. We continue to focus on areas where we can bring the best of our capabilities to our retail customers around the world. And we’re focused on ways we can bring the best of what Google has to offer through cloud integrations.
Our goal is to help retailers become customer-centric and data-driven, capture digital and omni-channel revenue growth, create the modern store and drive operational improvement.

Become customer centric and data driven
Customers today expect experiences that are timely, targeted, and tailored for them and their needs, and reject experiences that can’t deliver these features. Data modeling, legacy technology, and siloed systems often prevent retailers from providing that level of personalized experience.
At Google Cloud, we work with global retailers and our ecosystem partners to activate and bring value from first-party data, particularly in the field of customer data platforms (CDPs). This includes integrations from Google Cloud, such as our business intelligence platform Looker and other popular platforms to power one source of customer data through the organization. We also help retailers modernize their data warehouse with Looker for gathering business intelligence across their organization. This is important not just for consumer data, but inventory, supply chain, and store operations as well.
Capture Digital and Omnichannel Growth
We power some of the largest e-commerce sites in the world, helping them scale for Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and other holiday events. While scale is critically important, it’s also important to consider the quality of the online experience. How do your customers find products? How can you help deliver seamless online and omnichannel experiences?
To help, we’re building product discovery solutions that bring together the best of our technologies that help retailers drive engagement with their consumers. Retail Search, for example, gives retailers the ability to provide Google-quality search on their own digital properties – search that is customizable for their unique business needs and built upon Google’s advanced understanding of user intent & context.
The imperative is clear. Recent research found that retailers lose more than $300 billion to search abandonment — when purchase intent is not converted into a sale due to bad search results — every year in the US alone.

When you choose to run your business on Google Cloud you benefit from the same planet-scale infrastructure that powers Google’s products such as Maps, YouTube, and Workspace.
We have picked 10 ways in which Google Cloud Infrastructure services outshine alternatives in the market in how they simplify your operations, save money, and secure your data.
1. Custom Machine Types means no wasted resources
Compute Engine offers predefined machine types that you can use when you create a VM instance. A predefined machine type has a preset number of vCPUs and a preset amount of memory; each type is billed at a set price as described on the Compute Engine pricing page.
If predefined machine types don’t meet your needs, you can create a VM instance with a custom number of vCPUs and custom amount of memory, effectively building a custom machine type. Custom machine types are available only for general-purpose machine families. When you create a custom machine type, you are deploying a custom machine type from the E2, N2, N2D, or N1 machine family on GCP. No other leading cloud vendor offers custom machine types so extensively.
Custom machine types are a good idea for workloads that aren’t a good fit for the predefined machine types and for workloads that require more processing power or memory but don’t need all of the upgrades provided by the next machine type level. This translates into lower operating costs. They are also useful for controlling software licensing costs that are based on the number of underlying compute cores.

2. Compute Engine Virtual Machines are optimized for scale-out workloads
For scale-out workloads, T2D, the first instance type in the Tau VM family, is based on 3rd Gen AMD EPYC processors and leapfrogs VMs for scale-out workloads of any leading public cloud provider today, both in terms of performance and price-performance. Tau VMs offer 56% higher absolute performance and 42% higher price-performance compared to general-purpose VMs from any leading public cloud vendor (source). The x86 compatibility provided by these AMD EPYC processor-based VMs gives you market-leading performance improvements and cost savings, without having to port your applications to a new processor architecture. For SAP HANA, Google Cloud has demonstrated with SAP how we can run the world’s largest scale-out HANA system in the public cloud (96TB). With such innovation, you are covered as your business grows exponentially.
3. Largest single node GPU-enabled VM
Google is the only public cloud provider to offer up to 16 NVIDIA A100 GPUs in a single VM, making it possible to train very large AI models. Users can start with one NVIDIA A100 GPU and scale to 16 GPUs without configuring multiple VMs for single-node ML training, without crossing the VM layer.
Additionally, customers can choose smaller GPU configurations—1, 2, 4 and 8 GPUs per VM—providing the flexibility to scale their workload as needed.
The A2 VM family was designed to meet today’s most demanding applications—workloads like CUDA-enabled machine learning (ML) training and inference, for example. This family is built on the A100 GPU which offers up to 20x the compute performance compared to the previous generation GPU and comes with 40 GB of high-performance HBM2 GPU memory. To speed up multi-GPU workloads, the A2 VMs use NVIDIA’s HGX A100 systems to offer high-speed NVLink GPU-to-GPU bandwidth that delivers up to 600 GB/s. A2 VMs come with up to 96 Intel Cascade Lake vCPUs, optional Local SSD for workloads requiring faster data feeds into the GPUs and up to 100 Gbps of networking. A2 VMs provide full vNUMA transparency into the architecture of underlying GPU server platforms, enabling advanced performance tuning. Google Cloud offers these GPUs globally.
4. Non-disruptive maintenance means you worry less about planned downtime
Compute Engine offers live migration (non-disruptive maintenance) to keep your virtual machine instances running even when a host system event, such as a software or hardware update, occurs. Google’s Compute Engine live migrates your running instances to another host in the same zone without requiring your VMs to be rebooted. Live migration enables Google to perform maintenance that is integral to keeping infrastructure protected and reliable without interrupting any of your VMs. When a VM is scheduled to be live-migrated, Google provides a notification to the guest that a migration is imminent.
Live migration keeps your instances running during:
- Regular infrastructure maintenance and upgrades
- Network and power grid maintenance in the data centers
- Failed hardware such as memory, CPU, network interface cards, disks, power, and so on. This is done on a best-effort basis; if a hardware component fails completely or otherwise prevents live migration, the VM crashes and restarts automatically and a hostError is logged.
- Host OS and BIOS upgrades
- Security-related updates
- System configuration changes, including changing the size of the host root partition, for storage of the host image and packages
Live migration does not change any attributes or properties of the VM itself. The live migration process transfers a running VM from one host machine to another host machine within the same zone. All VM properties and attributes remain unchanged, including internal and external IP addresses, instance metadata, block storage data and volumes, OS and application state, network settings, network connections, and so on. This has the benefit of reducing operational and maintenance overhead, helps you build a more robust security posture where infrastructure can be consciously revamped from a known good state and minimizes risks for advanced persistent threats.

5. Trusted Computing: Shielded VMs guard you against advanced, persistent attacks
Establishing trust in your environment is multifaceted, involving hardware and firmware, as well as host and guest operating systems. Unfortunately, threats like boot malware or firmware rootkits can stay undetected for a long time, and an infected virtual machine can continue to boot in a compromised state even after you’ve installed legitimate software.
Shielded VMs can help you protect your system from attack vectors like:
- Malicious guest OS firmware, including malicious UEFI extensions
- Boot and kernel vulnerabilities in the guest OS
- Malicious insiders within your organization
To guard against these kinds of advanced persistent attacks, Shielded VMs use:
- Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) BIOS: Helps ensure that firmware is signed and verified
- Secure and Measured Boot: Helps ensure that a VM boots an expected, healthy kernel
- Virtual Trusted Platform Module (vTPM): Establishes root-of-trust, underpins Measured Boot, and prevents exfiltration of vTPM-sealed secrets
- Integrity Monitoring: Provides tamper-evident logging, integrated with Stackdriver, to help you quickly identify and remediate changes to a known integrity state
The Google approach allows customers to deploy Shielded VMs with only a simple click, thereby easing implementation.
6. Confidential Computing encrypts data while in use
Google Cloud was a founding member of the Confidential Computing Consortium. Along with encryption of data in transit and at rest using customer-managed encryption keys (CMEK) and customer-supplied encryption keys (CSEK), Confidential VM adds a “third pillar” to the end-to-end encryption story by encrypting data while in use. Confidential Computing uses processor-based technology that allows data to be encrypted in use while it is being processed in the public cloud. Confidential VM allows you to to encrypt memory in use on a Google Compute Engine VM by checking a single checkbox.
All Confidential VMs support the previously mentioned Shielded VM features under the covers—you can think of Shielded VM as helping to address VM integrity, while Confidential VM addresses the memory encryption aspect which relies on CPU features. With the confidential execution environments provided by Confidential VM and AMD Secure Encrypted Virtualization (SEV), Google Cloud keeps customers’ sensitive code and other data encrypted in memory during processing. Google does not have access to the encryption keys. In addition, Confidential VM can help alleviate concerns about risk related to either dependency on Google infrastructure or Google insiders’ access to customer data in the clear.

7. Advanced networking delivers full-stack networking and security services with fast, consistent, and scalable performance
Google Cloud’s network delivers low latency, reduces operational costs and ensures business continuity, enabling organizations to seamlessly scale up or down in any region to meet business needs. Our planet-scale network uses advanced software-defined networking and security with edge caching services to deliver fast, consistent, and scalable performance. With 28 regions, 85 zones, and 146 PoPs connected by 16 subsea fiber cables around the world, Google Cloud’s network offers a full stack of layer 1 to layer 7 services for enterprises to run their workloads anywhere. Enterprises can be assured that they have best-in-class networking and security services connecting their VMs, containers, and bare metal resources in hybrid and multi-cloud environments with simplicity, visibility, and control.
Google Cloud’s network has protected customers from one of the world’s largest DDoS attacks at 2.54 Tbps. With our multi-layer security architecture and products such as Cloud Armor, our customers ran their business with no disruptions. Furthermore, our recent integration of Cloud Armor with reCAPTCHA Enterprise adds best-in-class bot and fraud management to prevent volumetric attacks. Cloud Armor is deployed with our Cloud Load Balancer and Cloud CDN, extending the secure benefits at the network edge for traffic coming into Google Cloud so customers have security, performance, and reliability all built in. Furthermore, we are excited to offer Cloud IDS in preview, which was co-developed with security industry leader, Palo Alto Networks, to run natively in Google Cloud.
Our advanced networking capabilities also extends to GKE and Anthos networking. With the GKE Gateway controller, customers can manage internal and external HTTPS load balancing for a GKE cluster or a fleet of GKE clusters with multi-tenancy while maintaining centralized admin policy and control. Unlike other Kubernetes offerings, we offer eBPF dataplane which brings powerful tooling such as Kubernetes network policy and logging to GKE. eBPF is known to kernel engineers as a “superpower” for its unique architecture to load and unload modules in kernel space, and now this capability is built in with Google Cloud networking.
For observability and monitoring, our customers deploy Network Intelligence Center, Google Cloud’s comprehensive network monitoring, verification and optimization platform. With four key modules in Network Intelligence Center, and several more to come, we are working towards realizing our vision of proactive network operations that can predict and heal network failures, driven by AI/ML recommendations and remediation. Network Intelligence Center provides unmatched visibility into your network in the cloud along with proactive network verification. Centralized monitoring cuts down troubleshooting time and effort, increases network security and improves the overall user experience.
8. Regional Persistent Disk for High Availability
Regional Persistent Disk is a storage option that provides synchronous replication of data between two zones in a region. Regional Persistent Disks can be a great building block if you need to ensure high availability of your critical applications as they offer cost-effective durable storage and replication of data between two zones in the same region.
Regional Persistent Disks are also easy to set up within the Google Cloud Console. If you are designing robust systems or high availability services on Compute Engine, Regional Persistent Disks combined with other best practices such as backing up your data using snapshots enable you to build an infrastructure that is highly available and recoverable in a disaster. Regional Persistent Disks are also designed to work with regional managed instance groups. In the unlikely event of a zonal outage, Regional Persistent Disks allow continued I/O through failover of your workloads to another zone. Regional Persistent Disks can help meet zero RPO and near-zero RTO requirements and other stringent SLAs that your critical applications might require by maximizing application availability and protection of data during events such as host/VM failures and zonal outages.
9. Cloud Storage’s single namespace for dual-region and multi-region means managing regional replication is incredibly simple
Similar to how Persistent Disk makes data more available by replicating data across zones, Cloud Storage provides similar benefits for object storage. Cloud Storage within a region is cross-zone by definition, reducing the risk that a zonal outage would take down your application. Cloud Storage adds to this by also providing a cross-region option that can protect against a regional outage and gets your data closer to distributed users. This comes in the form of Dual-region or Multi-region settings for a bucket. These are the simplest to implement cross-region replication offerings in the industry—just a simple button or API call to enable them. In addition to being simple to implement, they offer an added advantage of using a single bucket name that spans regions.
This is unique in the industry. Competitive offerings currently require setting up and managing two distinct buckets, one in each region and they don’t offer the strong consistency properties Cloud Storage offers across regions. Operations and app development are burdened by this design. Google’s single namespace approach dramatically simplifies application development (the app runs on single region or dual/multi-region without any changes), and provides simpler application restarts and testing for DR.
10. Predictive autoscaling
Customers use predictive autoscaling to improve response times for applications with long initialization times or for applications with workloads that vary predictably with daily or weekly cycles. When you enable predictive autoscaling, Compute Engine forecasts future load based on your Managed Instance Group’s history and scales out the MIG’s in advance of predicted load, so that new instances are ready to serve when the load arrives. Without predictive autoscaling, an autoscaler can only scale a group reactively, based on observed changes in load in real time.
With predictive autoscaling enabled, the autoscaler works with real-time data as well as with historical data to cover both the current and forecasted load. Forecasts are refreshed every few minutes (faster than competing clouds) and consider daily and weekly seasonality, leading to more accurate forecasts of load patterns.
