GCP's Private Endpoints on Vertex AI feature enables predictions in near real-time. It requires configuring VCP Network Peering to establish link with Vertex AI for running quick predictions with security and low latency.

One of the biggest challenges when serving machine learning models is delivering predictions in near real-time. Whether you’re a retailer generating recommendations for users shopping on your site, or a food service company estimating delivery time, being able to serve results with low latency is crucial. That’s why we’re excited to announce Private Endpoints on Vertex AI, a new feature in Vertex Predictions. Through VPC Peering, you can set up a private connection to talk to your endpoint without your data ever traversing the public internet, resulting in increased security and lower latency for online predictions.

Configuring VPC Network Peering

Before you make use of a Private Endpoint, you’ll first need to create connections between your VPC (Virtual Private Cloud) network and Vertex AI.  A VPC network is a global resource that consists of regional virtual subnetworks, known as subnets, in data centers, all connected by a global network. You can think of a VPC network the same way you’d think of a physical network, except that it’s virtualized within GCP. If you’re new to cloud networking and would like to learn more, check out this introductory video on VPCs.

With VPC Network Peering, you can connect internal IP addresses across two VPC networks, regardless of whether they belong to the same project or the same organization. As a result, all traffic stays within Google’s network.

Deploying Models with Vertex Predictions

Vertex Predictions is a serverless way to serve machine learning models. You can host your model in the cloud and make predictions through a REST API. If your use case requires online predictions, you’ll need to deploy your model to an endpoint. Deploying a model to an endpoint associates physical resources with the model so it can serve predictions with low latency.

When deploying a model to an endpoint, you can specify details such as the machine type, and parameters for autoscaling. Additionally, you now have the option to create a Private Endpoint. Because your data never traverses the public internet, Private Endpoints offer security benefits in addition to reducing the time your system takes to serve the prediction when it receives the request. The overhead introduced by Private Endpoints is minimal, achieving performance nearly identical to DIY serving on GKE or GCE.  There is also no payload size limit for models deployed on the private endpoint.

Creating a Private Endpoint on Vertex AI is simple.

In the Models section of the Cloud console, select the model resource you want to deploy.

models-private-endpoint

Next, select DEPLOY TO ENDPOINT

deployment-model-private-endpoints

In the window on the right hand side of the console, navigate to the Access section and select Private. You’ll need to add the full name of the VPC network for which your deployment should be peered.

Enexor BioEnergy is a startup that can help produce clean and sustainable energy from discarded plastic, waste and bio-matter by offsetting carbon emissions. Alongside Google Cloud's dedicated experts and tech support, Enexor implements AI/ML!

Editor’s note: Earth Day reminds us that we all can contribute to creating a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future. Google Cloud is excited to celebrate innovative startup companies developing new technology and driving sustainable change. On this year’s Earth Day we’re highlighting Enexor BioEnergy and their initiative to produce clean, sustainable energy from plastic and agro-waste with the help of Google Cloud solutions.

Picture a world without electricity where billions of people burn dangerous fuels and trash from landfills to cook meals and heat their homes. Children constantly cough, choking on toxic smoke that lingers in houses and sickens entire families. Because there are no pumps or purification plants, contaminated water is hauled in buckets from dirty rivers and polluted wells. Without power or lights, hospitals and emergency medical clinics can only provide basic services during the day.

Although it is 2022, this harsh life is a reality for billions of people living in developing countries around the world.

Producing clean energy from plastics and organic-waste

This Earth Day, let’s imagine what life would be like in these countries if people had access to safe and inexpensive bioenergy. In this world, indoor air is fresher. Clean water runs from faucets, while homes, businesses, and schools have electricity. Doctors and nurses have the power to treat patients 24 hours a day and save lives with advanced medical equipment. Local economies boom and entrepreneurs thrive.

This is the sustainable future Enexor BioEnergy and its partners are building—one village at a time. With the Enexor Bio-CHP™ system, we produce clean and sustainable energy from discarded plastics, organic, and biomass-waste such as rice and corn husks, seaweed, coconuts, and other biomatter while offsetting significant Carbon emissions. The Bio-CHP can be commissioned and easily installed in just a single day, with multiple systems installed side-by-side when more power is needed. By being offered under its novel Energy-as-a-Service business model, Enexor ensures that the Bio-CHP can generate immediate environmental positive impact and customer adoption.

Each Bio-CHP unit generates enough energy to power over 100 homes—and provides much-needed renewable electricity and thermal power for schools, businesses, manufacturing facilities, water pumps, Wi-Fi systems, and telecommunications towers. The Bio-CHP creates clean energy by safely oxidizing plastics and biomatter in a secure container using a high-temperature system to power a micro-turbine. This produces bioenergy, significantly reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions.

By solving a community’s waste issues while providing more affordable renewable energy, the Bio-CHP also creates new economic opportunities and improved outcomes where it is installed. This includes using its inexpensive power to expand local services and offerings, and empowering local community clean up efforts by incentivizing waste collection via blockchain-enabled digital currencies and services such as PayGo. Additionally, the Bio-CHP is an ideal solution for businesses who desire to maximize their own sustainability efforts, gain greater energy resiliency, and save money on their current energy and waste costs.

Engaging in Google for Startups Accelerator: Climate Change

When developing the Bio-CHP, we realized we needed a reliable and experienced partner to help us incorporate the best in class machine learning and artificial intelligence into our technology. That’s why we joined the Google for Startups Accelerator and participated in the Google for Startups Accelerator: Climate Change.

The accelerator introduced us to other companies working to create a sustainable future and opened new opportunities for collaboration and partnerships. The accelerator also continues to give our small team access to the best of Google Cloud’s people, programs, and solutions. We especially want to highlight Google Cloud’s dedicated startup experts and the incredible technical support they provide, as well as the Google Cloud research credits we used to explore new solutions.

As an example, Enexor is developing a predictive maintenance tool that automatically adjusts Bio-CHP operations to match fuel composition. Another tool in development proactively identifies and flags potential Bio-CHP system and component failures—before they occur.

Google Cloud’s dedicated startup experts work closely with Enexor to develop predictive models for these tools and Enexor also used the Google Cloud research credits that were provided to build these advanced models on TensorFlow, Vertex AI, Cloud CDN and AutoML. Since each system is remotely monitored from Enexor’s global headquarters in Tennessee, predictive maintenance tools also increase the safety, reliability, and efficiency of Bio-CHP in off-grid locations.

Generating 13 billion kWh of clean power by 2040

In the future, Enexor plans to explore additional Google Cloud solutions such as BigQuery to crunch larger datasets, Google Data Studio to build dashboards, and perhaps even Google Cloud Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) to more efficiently process machine learning (ML) workloads.

These solutions will help Enexor to achieve three primary goals by 2040: to generate 13 billion kWh of clean power, reduce 120 million tons of CO₂, and provide one million people with access to clean and sustainable energy. With each Bio-CHP system, Enexor annually reduces up to 2,000 metric tons of CO₂ equivalent emissions by decreasing methane emissions released from landfills, offsetting fossil fuel-based power generation with carbon credits and minimizing waste disposal transportation emissions.

Enexor is now preparing to deploy the Bio-CHP in Accra, Ghana where it will convert organic and plastic manufacturing waste into sustainable energy. Enexor is also looking forward to working with the local Accra community and NGOs to collect discarded plastics and organic waste diverting it from ending in the rivers and oceans and instead using them as renewable fuel sources. We can’t wait to see what we accomplish next as we celebrate Earth Day 2022 and think about the sustainable future Enexor is helping to empower.

IKEA's infrastructure was already running on GCP. As the pandemic influenced customers' online behaviors, the global furniture retail company deployed a scientific approach to make product recommendations at scale with AI.

Background

At IKEA we have multiple places in our customer journey in various channels where different kinds of personalization can deliver a superior customer experience. Product recommendations in the shopping basket, content recommendations in editorial sections, inspirational recommendations on product pages and more. After a while in the broader “recommendations” team there was a decision to split the team to have one sub-team focused on product recommendations. The pandemic altered customer behavior and needs as well. At that inflection point we decided to change our way of working and dive head-first into a more scientific approach to handle the operational complexities of delivering high quality product recommendations at scale. We deemed this necessary to improve our level of personalization and to have a holistic understanding of our customers.

Data Driven Decisions

The first step was to radically improve our ability to get high-quality quantitative information to understand how our ‘recommendation’ solutions affected personalization. We did this through high volume A/B testing on customer behaviour and after initial experimentation, we had a few key learnings:

  1. The mix of both UX and algorithms are really important for a cohesive customer experience.
  2. The quality of personalization can’t be measured in silos. Statistical significance  can be attained  by testing several groups of recommendations at once.

Once we came up with a solid framework for gathering data and acknowledged how little we knew about our customers, we were able to explore an incredible number of creative options – nothing was off the table. This was a very humbling experience, in that it opened up new perspectives for personalization, a more curious and less confined way of thinking. We learned to trust the data because it might show you things you don’t expect.

Experimentation and Learning Framework

Our teams created ways to quickly deploy experimental modifications to our existing solution. This enabled experimentation in the front-end with the user experience, including details in headings and images. This also covered tweaks in the backend with anything from detailed manual additions or removals of recommendations to mixing and matching of various algorithms both home grown and from Recommendations AI.

This flexibility came with an overhead–more complexity and cost relative to directly retrieving recommendations from Recommendations AI. However, the benefit was that we were no longer dependent on manual evaluation of what made for a good recommendation system. We aligned on a data-driven and qualitative approach to provisioning recommendations and significantly accelerated our experimentation timeline. Together with optimization of the CI/CD pipeline this enabled the team to take an idea or hypothesis from inception to A/B testing with customers in less than half an hour.

Recommendations AI Experiments

Our team’s infrastructure was already running on GCP and when we received early access to Recommendations AI, the requirements to get started were minimal and that allowed us to start with initial tests requiring minimal effort and investment.

We started with a few use-cases and identified places where our existing recommendation algorithms needed improvement or complementary recommendations. We also explored additional ways where more useful information could be presented to the customers through personalized recommendations.

Recommendations AI Model Combinations

While Recommendations AI might be considered a simple API to get a set of product recommendations, as we dove deeper into the solution it became apparent that it could be tweaked in several different ways to offer many fine tuning configurations to meet business goals. While too much fine tuning and customization could lead to subpar performance, in general we found that it was a great strategy to give us several versions of ML powered recommendations to work with. The further you personalize the experience, the more options you have to likely pick the best one for the customer.

Recommendations AI models like  ‘Recommended for you’, ‘Frequently Bought Together’ and ‘Others you may like’; are coupled with business goals like optimizing for conversion rate, click through rate and revenue. We experimented with many different model combinations and custom rules. All this was easily configurable right in the GCP console. One of the simplest custom configurations we used was to only recommend items that were in stock, and when items were out of stock we looked at similar items that were available to augment the experience.

Collaboration with Google

Our collaboration with Google Cloud accelerated our learning process during experimentation. We worked closely together early in the product development. Additionally, their model provided flexibility to change direction and allow for more options than we had previously. Ultimately, this provided us a way to drastically improve our time to market with a product that produced tremendous results that we could not have accomplished on our own.

Results and Takeaways

With more personalized and real-time recommendations available we saw great success. We were able to increase the number of relevant recommendations displayed on a page by +400%. To accommodate the wider repertoire of recommendations we had to change the user experience. For example, in some places we had horizontally scrolling displays of product recommendations which were much easier for customers to use.

ikea stats.jpg

Another consequence of displaying more personalized recommendations was tangible improvement to conversion rate and average order value. Recommendations AI algorithms helped customers in two ways:

  1. Customers were able to find products that they liked quickly and establish their preferred choice among other options more quickly as well, giving them confidence to make a purchase through much fewer clicks. Even though we previously already had well tuned recommendations of several types, with Recommendations AI we measured +30% improvement in click through rates.
  2. Average order value saw a +2% surge with numerous examples of how Recommendations AI could help customers find both attractive and directly complementary products, expanding the customer purchase from a single product to an entire home furnishing solution.

As a direct effect of having stronger business results, the team started exploring more places in the customer journey where our growing buffet of recommendations could be used. We’d start with an initial experiment to answer if displaying recommendations in the specific context made sense at all. Frequently the data that emerged from these experiments prodded us to iterate further on what additional types of recommendations would be most appropriate to show to the customer as the customer’s behaviour evolved. Today, most of IKEA’s site recommendations are powered by Recommendations AI.

One key takeaway is that for some types of personalized recommendations there are benefits to using advanced algorithms that require a lot of high level data science and engineering competence to build since they outperform simplistic approaches. In some places, simplistic approaches work very well and in others the right decision is to not have product recommendations at all. For an effective use of product recommendations you need to have all the above options and the ability to tell when to use which one.

ikea.jpg

Next steps

When working with something so tightly related to customer experience, there is a constant change in user behaviour and new learnings to observe and adapt to. Product recommendations are rarely the main stand alone experience and frequently something that is used to help and enhance an experience. We see a lot of value in having a large toolbox of possible options and a team with a relentless focus on collaboration to improve the customer experience. We’re working directly with the Recommendations AI team and experimenting with several new features that we’re excited about.

In the future we see opportunities of improving the customer journey through a more visual experience that inspires the customer rather than relying on customers to use their imagination to visualize groups of products together. Vision Product Search provides that and is something we’re looking into deploying next. We’ll be sharing more about our journey with Recommendations AI at the Google Cloud Retail Summit session ‘IKEA’s Approach to Building a Powerful Recommendations Engine’ on July 27th 2021.

Best wishes to all developers from the IKEA product recommendations team & the Google Recommendations AI team!

MD Insider is using ML to help patients figure out which doctors have the best outcomes for specific procedures by analyzing data from thousands of institutions and doctor-patient interactions. That wouldn’t have been possible without Google Cloud.

Patients about to undergo a healthcare procedure understandably want the best medical professionals they can get. But how can they know which doctors have had the most experience and the best outcomes with that particular procedure? How can they make an informed decision about which doctor to select when the information they have is limited to the doctor’s practice area and subjective reviews from other patients?

MD Insider is working to solve that problem using machine learning (ML) to objectively analyze doctor performance. By analyzing data from thousands of institutions and millions of doctor-patient interactions and medical events, MD Insider identifies physician performance insights based on their experience and outcomes. Insights are then integrated into a triage engine, that enables consumers to search for and schedule appointments with providers who meet their clinical criteria and convenience preferences, such as insurances accepted, office hours, locations, and language.

MD Insider also offers robust data APIs to help health systems, health plans, and employers reduce costs and improve quality of care. Payers use the APIs to curate high-quality provider networks and manage provider directories. Examples of MD Insider’s data APIs include Provider Experience and Share of Practice metrics, Provider Quality and Outcomes, Network Modeling, Expert Clinical Search Taxonomy, Find a Provider, Acute-Care Hospital Quality, and Provider and Facility Metadata.

“We use Google Cloud Platform the way the cloud was supposed to be used. By comparison, other cloud providers feel like you’re renting somebody else’s data center.”

Ed Holsinger, Lead Data Engineer and Head of Data Science, MD Insider

MD Insider is continuously ingesting the latest performance data about physicians and analyzing billions of rows of data. Requiring constant scalability, the company was born in the cloud; however, it had difficulty configuring server instances for the optimal balance of memory and CPU, and its Hadoop cluster had to be kept running 24/7. Network performance was often slow for no apparent reason. As a result, failure rates from node timeouts increased, and costs grew along with the data. MD Insider had to estimate its usage and pay up front, and received little financial benefit from sustained use commitments.

Knowing that data would continue to grow, MD Insider decided to move its data services — the most demanding and complex portion of its infrastructure — to Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and took advantage of GCP managed services for container management and big data analytics.

“One of the reasons we decided to move to Google Cloud Platform is because it feels like a unified, well-designed cloud architecture and pricing model,” says Ed Holsinger, Lead Data Engineer and Head of Data Science at MD Insider. “We use Google Cloud Platform the way the cloud was supposed to be used. By comparison, other cloud providers feel like you’re renting somebody else’s data center.”

“Moving to Google Cloud Platform and using Kubernetes Engine gave us 5x the processing power for analyzing physician performance at 75% less cost. Our data scientists have more power than ever before to generate insights for our customers.”

Ed Holsinger, Lead Data Engineer and Head of Data Science, MD Insider

5x the performance, 75% less cost

MD Insider now uses Kubernetes Engine to automate container management and deploy clusters in minutes with just a few clicks. When hundreds of machines are required to analyze a large dataset, automation in Kubernetes Engine deploys ML models as containers, each of which manages the full lifecycle of its task, including scaling up resources, deploying results, and scaling back down when the task is finished. It’s easy for MD Insider to specify exactly how much CPU and memory each container needs, helping maximize performance while reducing costs.

“Moving to Google Cloud Platform and Kubernetes Engine gave us 5x the processing power for analyzing physician performance at 75% less cost,” says Ed. “Our data scientists have more power than ever before to generate insights for our customers. Data scoring jobs that used to take three business days now take four hours.”

Adds Galen Meurer, Senior Software Engineer at MD Insider: “Even if all Google Cloud Platform had to offer was Kubernetes Engine, I would still want to use it. Previously we spent up to 30% of our time managing our container infrastructure, which we can now use for product development.”

A foundation for data science

MD Insider was happy to find that GCP offers a wide variety of managed services. For example, the company is supplementing its Kubernetes Engine clusters with BigQuery for its big data masters and selection jobs, enabling scientists to analyze new and different types of data as well as analyze larger datasets in less time. MD Insider also uses Cloud Storage for big data staging and Cloud Dataproc to run managed Apache Spark clusters for data processing.

“Google Cloud Platform gives us an incredibly powerful cloud architecture for data engineering and data science,” says Eric Wilson, CEO of MD Insider. “That gives our scientists independence, they can do what they need to do without waiting and with no contention between them.”

A developer-friendly platform

Migrating its data services was such a success that MD Insider decided to move the rest of its infrastructure to GCP, including the front end for its web application. Since the migration, MD Insider has experienced no unplanned downtime on GCP, allowing it to easily meet the 99.5% uptime SLA it promises to customers. It’s also taking advantage of Build Triggers in Kubernetes Engine to automate container builds and reduce build times by more than 40%. Production code can be updated in seconds, with no impact to end users other than making new features available.

“GCP has simplified our workflow in so many ways, from intelligent load balancing to content delivery and automating builds,” says Matthew Frey, Software Engineer. “Everything on GCP is cohesive and developer friendly, with a superior UI and better network performance than other cloud providers.”

Ryan Beaini, Senior Software Engineer at MD Insider, agrees: “Since we moved to GCP, our developers are definitely happier. The pain and the headaches we experienced because of the limitations of our previous toolset all went away.”

“We’re a small company, but what we’re doing is incredibly important. We’re helping people make decisions about healthcare providers that could impact their lives and even be life-saving. Google Cloud Platform is helping us make our mission bigger, better, and brighter.”

Eric Wilson, CEO, MD Insider

Securing billions of rows of clinical and non-clinical healthcare data

As a healthcare technology company, MD Insider processes billions of rows of clinical and non-clinical healthcare data. To control user access to GCP, it uses Identity & Access Management (IAM) along with Yubico YubiKeys for hardware-based two-factor authentication when logging into Google Workspace. MD Insider takes comfort that GCP encrypts data at rest by default, and encrypts and authenticates data in transit when data moves outside physical boundaries not controlled by Google or on behalf of Google.

“On GCP, everything that we need to be encrypted for compliance purposes is encrypted, which is fantastic,” says Eric. “When I tell our potential clients and partners about the resources that Google has dedicated to security, it gives them the confidence that their data will be protected.”

Transforming how teams work

As a growing company, MD Insider must collaborate seamlessly between offices in California, Colorado, and Illinois. It relies on Google Workspace for communication and productivity, using DocsSheets, and Slides to drive the business. Employee and team files are stored in Drive, and meetings are conducted via Google Meet with Chromebox for Meetings videoconferencing hardware kits. Google Workspace also helps MD Insider maintain information security by authenticating email domains with digital signatures in Gmail and scanning outgoing email using Gmail Data Loss Prevention (DLP).

“I use Google Workspace every day, and everyone else here does too,” says Eric. “Team Drives are a big time saver for us. We’ve let our previous office software expire, because there’s no need to pay for those licenses anymore.”

Promoting healthcare transparency

With GCP helping MD Insider increase velocity and momentum, the company is making exciting progress. For example, it has entered into a strategic partnership with Zelis Healthcare, which will use MD Insider’s API to provide insights for a next-gen analytics platform that will give health plans unprecedented transparency around physician performance.

“We’re a small company, but what we’re doing is incredibly important,” says Eric. “We’re helping people make decisions about healthcare providers that could impact their lives and even be life-saving. Google Cloud Platform is helping us make our mission bigger, better, and brighter.”

*Google Workspace was formerly known as G Suite prior to Oct. 6, 2020.
