The Strange Phenomenon AI Revealed at Ride-Hailing Company Go-Jek
Go-Jek, Indonesia’s first billion-dollar startup, has seen an incredible amount of growth in both users and data over the past two years. Many of the ride-hailing company’s services are backed by machine learning models hosted on Google Cloud Platform. Models range from driver allocation, to dynamic surge pricing, to food recommendation, and process millions of bookings every day, leading to substantial increases in revenue and customer retention.
By embracing Google Cloud, Go-Jek has overcome many of the technical challenges brought on by its rapid growth. BigQuery has become the cornerstone of their data foundation, scaling seamlessly to meet their immense data storage and processing needs.
Using Pub/Sub as an event stream and Dataflow for unified batch and stream processing has prevented inconsistencies in production data, while simultaneously reducing costs through intelligent resource allocation.
Together, these technologies allow Go-Jek to react immediately to real world events, whether by retraining models with ML Engine, or refreshing data in a low latency data store like BigTable.
Find out how Go-Jek leverages Google Cloud and other lessons they have learned scaling machine learning.

Notified is a leading communications cloud for events, public relations, and investor relations to drive meaningful insights and outcomes. They provide communications solutions to effectively reach and engage customers, investors, employees, and the media.
One of Notified’s Public Relations solutions is the ‘Media Contact Database’ that allows customers to discover media and influencers in a unique media database powered by AI and human-curated research.
The goal of the initiative is to expand the scope of the AI driven, dynamically discovered influencers, and analyze online news articles using AI/ML technologies to extract entities and classify content. The prior process to extract insights from news articles provided only 30-40% of the desired results, and there were accuracy and stability issues that resulted in a lot of manual intervention.
Journalist Beat
A key outcome of the AI driven process is to identify the ‘Journalist Beat’. A Journalist Beat essentially summarizes the individual’s area of focus such as a sports writer, financial journalist etc.
Three options were evaluated for the AI/ML process to generate the Journalist Beats :
Option 1: Topic ML
Unsupervised ML approach to determine the commonly used terms.
- Pro: Common approach to grouping documents and determine similar text
- Con: Unbounded list of text
Option 2: ML Classification
Build classification models (supervised) to map reference articles to ‘Beats’
- Pro: Aligns to ‘Research Analytics’ existing processes
- Con: Time to build and maintain ML models for hundreds of beats.
Option 3: GCP Context Classification
Leverage GCP’s Natural Language API for initial classification and as input to Notified single model
- Pro: Aligns to ‘Research Analytics’ without building ML models.
Ultimately the GCP Natural Language API solution was chosen because of the speed of execution and a high level of accuracy with the pretrained models. The Notified team was able to launch the product feature within a few weeks, without ever needing to do extensive data collection and train the models.
Here is the high level process that was implemented for Journalist Beats.

Since Notified supports curated media contacts globally, news articles were instantly translated to English using GCP Translation API. GCP Natural Language API’s solution to classify text was used to analyze the translated text and generate the list of content categories.
Solution Architecture
Here is a sample solution architecture for the ‘Discovered Journalist’ process.

Three core principles guided the above architecture – Serverless & Fully Managed, Scalability & Elasticity for flexibility and to optimize costs, API led real-time processing.
In addition to the GCP Natural Language API and Translation API below are a few serverless GCP products that were part of the automated solution:
- BigQuery is Google Cloud’s fully managed, petabyte-scale, and cost-effective analytics data warehouse that lets you run analytics over vast amounts of data in near real time.
- Cloud Run is a fully managed serverless platform that can be used to develop and deploy highly scalable containerized applications.
- Cloud Tasks is a fully managed service that allows you to manage the execution, dispatch, and delivery of a large number of distributed tasks.
The powerful pre-trained models of the Natural Language API provide a comprehensive set of features to apply natural language understanding to applications such as sentiment analysis, entity analysis, entity sentiment analysis, content classification, and syntax analysis.
Notified looks ahead to super-scaling
In an effort to even further improve its best in class ‘Media Contact Database’, Notified looks to super scale the above AI driven Influencer Discovery process to the order of 100+ million news articles per month. It plans to expand the scope of entities extracted from the news articles and provide a news exploration service for its customers by performing intelligent entity-based searches. To watch your markets evolve, see how competitors add AI insights. To actually stay in the market, make AI the main driver of your product road maps. GCP Natural Language API accelerated our ability to adopt AI at scale.

Google Products Helps HMH’s Healthcare Staff Work from Anywhere Efficiently and Securely!

Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) executive Mark Eimer explains how an ambitiously-timed rollout of a comprehensive suite of Google products helped the entire organization—from doctors to IT staff—achieve better security, cultivate a more equitable work environment, and ultimately, improve patient outcomes.
How does a recently merged, 17-hospital healthcare system fast-track a platform migration and hardware rollout securely and in a way that improves work for everyone, regardless of location or role? These are the questions that kept me up at night in early 2020, when the pandemic demanded a “big bang”—something our legacy laptops and operating systems couldn’t handle.
We began our work with Google in 2020 with the adoption of Chrome as our default browser. As we migrated platforms, keeping patient data safe was of the utmost importance to us, along with providing every staff member with the tools they needed to work virtually. Our staff often experienced issues accessing our web-based applications using Internet Explorer or Edge Browser, a problem that went away when we switched to Chrome. Chrome’s versatile compatibility also made it easier for my team to migrate all of our web-based operations, and Chrome’s security and manageability were key components to making this switch a huge win for the organization.
The success of this migration led us to extend our Google partnership to patient care applications—where Google’s expertise in AI and ML helps scale the use of diagnostics tools and improve other aspects of the patient journey.

Achieving security at every step
Like so many other healthcare organizations, we’ve been concerned about ransomware attacks. This is part of why we moved to Google Workspace and distributed over 3,000 Chrome OS devices in kiosk mode in March of 2020, when many of us went remote due to the pandemic. We were very concerned about team members accessing corporate applications through home devices that were running EOL operating systems (WIN7), as well as a general lack of antivirus and encryption measures.
We were protected by the fact that Google’s software and hardware both had built-in security features that we needed to stave off sophisticated attackers. For example, Chrome OS automatically updates to the latest security update and encrypts data living outside the cloud on the hardware. These features protected us from security-related disruptions, letting us securely move a huge library of file shares and emails across thousands of accounts to Google Chrome OS in just four months.
A year later, in March 2021, we migrated the enterprise over to Google Workspace and saw an immediate reduction in spam by 30% from the inherent built-in AI/ML. This meant staff were less likely to receive (and click through) phishing attempts. My team could connect, create, and collaborate easily and securely—even as more of us were working from home and needed to access sensitive data remotely.
Leveling the playing field
As an organization, we were surprised by how many team members didn’t have personal computers at home. We quickly decided that if we needed team members to work from home, the health network would have to supply hardware. Chromebooks’ lower price tag compared to PCs—on top of their built-in security controls—allowed us to purchase, deploy, and support that initial distribution of 3,000 Chromebooks to team members in less than three weeks, providing devices to every eligible remote employee instead of just a select few. This was vital to reaching our equitable technology goal as part of our diversity and inclusion initiative: everybody has the same tools to do good work.
When all employees have what they need to do their jobs well, we get better patient outcomes. Before we began this cloud adoption journey, patient and staff experiences were different within the hospitals and outside of them.
Now it’s the same wherever our staff is, and we’ve seen efficiency and accessibility benefits extend to the patient side. For example, we built a web-based contact center that supports 80 locations that use Workspace and Chrome OS devices. Since customer service, admin, and providers are all on the same system, it has become a one-stop shop for patients.
Furthermore, through the Grow with Google program, we were able to provide another benefit to employees that drove our equity goals. Google trained 50 non-IT staff members—from environmental services, food and nutrition, and other non-tech areas who were interested in making a career change to IT—on the Google products we were using. They may not have thought about switching to a career in IT before the Grow with Google program came to our organization, but through this partnership, they now have that opportunity.
A strategic, long-term partner
With any large-scale rollout, the work doesn’t end once laptops are in employee hands. Google has shown their commitment to long-term collaboration as they continuously optimize their products for the unique needs of healthcare providers and go the extra mile in tailoring tools to our staff’s workflows.
For example, on the Chrome OS side, the Google team has helped our registration desks and document centers with device integration for hardware like credit card readers and e-signature pads. They’ve also helped us meet security and privacy requirements mandated by state and federal governments around HIPAA, Medicaid, and Medicare reimbursements. Over this next year, we’ll look at a feature roadmap with Google Cloud to deliver further enhancements, iterating on the product itself to meet our needs for the present and the future.

Delivering the future of healthcare
The benefits we’ve seen around security and usability—and the ability to provide all staff with equal access to Google’s technology—are why we’re expanding our partnership with Google to both the administrative and clinical sides of HMH. In addition to further Google rollouts with corporate, next year we’re distributing Chromebooks to all 350 of our ambulatory clinics.
We’re also working with the Google professional services team to create a custom AI model that analyzes 3D mammogram images. This AI model will enable two providers to read mammograms—which adheres to international best practices but is currently rare in the US—without requiring additional time. Conducting double readings of mammograms will yield better health outcomes for our patients, such as a lower patient recall rate and an increased accuracy in detecting breast cancer.
We’re currently building the model using a variety of Google Cloud products, including Cloud Healthcare API. Once complete, this model is expected to be trained, deployed, and maintained in Google’s Vertex AI, allowing our providers to be more productive as they make clinical decisions with AI support. As the model is proven over time, we plan to make the predictive services accessible to other healthcare organizations.
With Google, we’re able to achieve a unified architecture for storing data as well as training and deploying AI models, which enable our staff to work more efficiently and securely from anywhere. While I may not be able to predict the future as accurately as AI can, I foresee our continued partnership with Google as a key part of HMH’s improved provider and patient outcomes.

New capabilities available in Duet AI for Google Cloud
Here are some of the new capabilities available to get us started on our mission to deliver a new personalized and intent-driven cloud experience:
- Code assistance provides AI-driven code assistance for cloud users such as application developers and data engineers. It gives code recommendations as they type in real time, generates full functions and code blocks, and identifies vulnerabilities and errors in the code, while suggesting fixes.

Code assistance auto-generates code for creating a Google Cloud Storage bucket
Code assistance will be available through multiple products and services across Google Cloud, such as in Cloud Workstations, our fully-managed secure development environment, and other code-editing experiences in the Google Cloud Console. Developers will also find code assistance in Cloud Shell Editor or via our Cloud Code IDE extensions for VSCode and JetBrains IDEs. It supports multiple languages including Go, Java, Javascript, Python, and SQL.
- Chat assistance allows people to use simple natural language to get answers on specific development or cloud-related questions. Users can engage with chat assistance to get real-time guidance on various topics, such as how to use certain cloud services or functions, or get detailed implementation plans for their cloud projects. It can also provide architectural or coding best practices, helping to reduce the need to go searching for relevant documents.

Use chat assistance to get the detailed steps for deploying an app on Cloud Run
Chat assistance will also be available across multiple Google Cloud surface areas, for example IDEs, the Cloud Console, and through products and services. Whether you’re a developer, operator, data engineer, or security professional, you’ll be able to leverage chat assistance to help get more work done faster.
Looking to optimize these features further for developers specialized in one particular area? With Generative AI support in Vertex AI, enterprises can fine-tune Codey using their own code base. They can consume these customized Codey models directly from Vertex AI today, and later this year, they will be able to connect it to the built-in Duet AI experience. And don’t worry, if you choose to train Codey with your code, your private data is kept private, and not used in the broader foundation model training corpus. You will have transparency and control over where data is stored and how or if it is used.
- Duet AI for AppSheet will let users create intelligent business applications, connect their data, and build workflows into Google Workspace via natural language. With no coding required, users will be able to build apps by describing their needs in a chat guided by AI-powered prompts. This makes app creation accessible to more users, which can allow developer teams to focus their time on other high-impact work.

Digital technology offers increasing flexibility and choice to consumers. As a result, the retail industry is dramatically shifting toward more tailored and personalized experiences for shoppers, and businesses are rethinking how they deliver value to customers.
This couldn’t be more true for the beauty retailing industry where leading companies are turning to digital technology to create customized shopping experiences.
At Google Cloud, we’re particularly excited about our work with Ulta Beauty, the largest beauty retailer in the United States with more than 1196 stores in all 50 states, and how the company is using Google Cloud technology solutions to power personalization and redefine beauty retailing.
Established in 1990, Ulta Beauty has had incredible success as a company, and as customers become more discerning and curious about their purchases, the company is finding new ways to meet their changing needs.
Recently, leaders at Ulta Beauty recognized a huge opportunity to complement and enhance the shopping experience by helping beauty enthusiasts navigate through more than 500 brands and 25,000 products carried in their stores and online channel.
They decided to leverage the data from Ulta Beauty’s successful Ultamate Rewards loyalty program to create and offer more unique and personalized user experiences.
With more than 30 million members generating data through sales, transactions, product reviews, and social media engagement, Ulta Beauty’s Loyalty Program creates a comprehensive data set, and the company sought the right technology partner to help organize, analyze and transform that data into valuable insights for its customers.
Ulta Beauty’s leaders knew they had an opportunity to leverage data analytics and machine learning to reach customers in new ways, enhance the guest experience, and continue to grow their active loyalty member base. After considering a number of cloud providers, they chose to expand their existing partnership with Google Cloud.
“Google Cloud listened to our needs and worked in tandem with our engineering team to address our challenges,” said Michelle Pacynski, vice president of digital innovation at Ulta Beauty. “The ease of working with the Google Cloud team and their breadth of experience made the decision a no-brainer, laying the foundation for a great partnership.”
In 2019, Ulta Beauty announced it was working with Google Cloud Platform to unify and organize its data, using:
- BigQuery to perform data analysis and generate dynamic content, personalized product recommendations, and event-based messages for customers.
- Cloud Storage to provide highly available, secure, resilient and cost-effective access to data across the entire enterprise.
- Compute Engine for the high-performance scalability needed to grow with customer demand while painlessly migrating existing applications to the cloud.
- Anthos to build a hybrid cloud foundation that allows their applications to take advantage of all this data, combining the power and flexibility of GKE with the ability to leverage their existing investment in secure infrastructure on-premises.
Our partnership with Ulta Beauty has enabled increased engagement with customers in store and online, and the creation of new tools and capabilities, including a new Virtual Beauty Advisor tool to deliver tailored recommendations and help shoppers choose the right products, and a Customer Conversation Platform that’s enabling deeper connections with guests, ultimately driving customer loyalty.
“It’s been a really efficient process so far due in part to the ease of working with the Google team,” said Michelle Pacynski, vice president of digital innovation at Ulta Beauty. “They’re experienced, approachable, and their can-do style makes for a great partnership. They listened to our needs and worked in tandem with our engineering team, figuring things out, and getting it done.”
