The game of baseball has no shortage of statistics — from batting average to exit velocity, strikeouts to wins above replacement. Among all sports, Major League Baseball (MLB) arguably contains the most analytical and data-driven participants and fan base. Subconsciously or viscerally, players and managers on the field and those following from anywhere are constantly assessing and making decisions based off of game play trends and expectations — whether a batter will come through with a hit in an important situation, when a pitcher should be pulled. Less analyzed, however, is what leads fans to become engaged with certain players or teams, and what factors drive their love of the game. This is the motivation behind the problem being posed by Major League Baseball in their Kaggle competition for Player Digital Engagement Forecasting. Can you use machine learning to deconstruct baseball fandom?
This competition asks you to predict measures of digital engagement for each active player on a daily basis during the MLB season. So, how large was the surge in fan interest after Joe Musgrove threw the first no-hitter in Padres history? Is Shohei Ohtani’s engagement higher when he pitches well, when he hits a monster home run…or when he does both? You’re provided a wealth of game, team and player information – detailed stats, awards, rosters, and transaction information – as well as social and digital engagement data as your inputs. Data scientists will recognize this as an exciting forecasting problem with both traditional regression and time series components, where having this input data just prior to the prediction date is critical to determining which players will receive the most engagement.
With so many variables in the game, there are an endless number of vectors which could possibly influence fan engagement. Eleven-time All-Star Miguel Cabrera delighted fans by hitting the first home run of the season – in the snow! Occasionally a lesser-known player like Musgrove or Carlos Rodón “wins the day” with an unlikely no-hitter. And sometimes just getting traded to an iconic franchise like the Yankees generates a ton of fan interest, like it did for Rougned Odor in early April.

As these examples show, a player’s digital engagement can be pretty dynamic during the season, with many different potential contributors to who is “trending” on a given day. How can you use data to uncover which factors are the most influential of engagement with each player’s digital content?
Ready to play ball? Check out the competition on Kaggle for all the details. $50,000 in prizes is up for grabs in two prize categories. The code competition puts your machine learning skills to the test, to see who can build the most accurate forecasting models to predict daily digital engagement for every active player. You’ll have until July 31st to build your models and then be evaluated on a future time frame, which will determine the winners. For data visualization and exploration experts out there, the explainability prizes give you an opportunity to analyze more broadly which factors, even those outside of what we’re providing directly, most influence digital engagement. You’ll be evaluated on how well you can use what the data is telling you to support your findings.

How adidas’s Marketing Team Benefits from Google Cloud Marketing Platform
We live in a world where the consumer journey is no longer linear, making it difficult to know when to deliver a brand message or a product message.
“We talk a lot about the consumer journey no longer being linear. It’s very difficult to know when the consumer is going to come in contact with your message. And because of that it makes it much harder to deliver the right message at the right time,” says Chris Murphy, Head of Digital Experience, adidas.
To solve the problem, adidas turned to the Google Cloud Marketing Platform to use audience insights to inform the art of storytelling and help teams, from brand marketing to retail to e-commerce, deliver relevant messages across channels.
“In a singular environment like Google Cloud Marketing Platform, when you’re able to see audience insights and information…we know when someone should be receiving a brand message versus a product message — when they’re thinking about buying or when they’re actually ready to purchase,” says Murphy.
It wasn’t easy at the start. “Being in brand marketing for so long, there was this initial pushback on data and the science behind it, because it was an art. But what we’re seeing now is the ability for data and insights to really inform the art of storytelling. It allows us to understand the impact that we’re having in real time,” says Kelly Olmstead, VP, Brand Activation for North America, adidas.
Today adidas’ marketing team depends more heavily on data and analysis to guide its strategy. “Starting every meeting with data and insights, that’s something that we want to take outside of just the marketing organization, and really infuse it across our culture here at adidas,” says Olmstead.

Hike: Processing Analytics Queries 20X Faster with Google Cloud Platform

After a seamless migration to Google Cloud Platform with CloudCover and Google Cloud Professional Services, Hike has reduced its costs by 20% and processed analytics queries 20 times faster than with its previous cloud provider. The business is also using AI and machine learning to enhance the experience provided by a new sticker-based messaging app, Hike Sticker Chat.
India is a market of opportunity for businesses that provide messaging apps to consumers. With more than 1.3 billion people, the country is the second most populous in the world. However, global messaging app providers face a robust market challenge from Hike, a home-grown internet and technology startup. Launched in 2012, Hike provides innovative products such as Hike Messenger and more recently the AI- and machine-learning-enabled Hike Sticker Chat, a service that enables young people in the country to express themselves through digital stickers.
The business says it understands the people of India and communication like no one else, while its mission is to reduce individuals’ dependency on the keyboard. To do this, Hike is building one of the largest repositories of AI and machine-learning-enabled stickers for Hike Sticker Chat. This messaging platform is, according to Hike, the only product of its type that enables conversations through stickers covering more than 40 languages and local dialects.

Founded by Kavin Bharti Mittal, the Delhi-based venture is backed by SoftBank, Tencent, Tiger Global, Foxconn, and Bharti. To date, Hike has raised $261 million in funding. In August 2016, Hike raised its Series D round of funding, led by Tencent and Foxconn, at a valuation of $1.4 billion. The business is one of the fastest Indian startups to achieve Unicorn status, doing so in less than four years.
Hike started operations on a multinational cloud service. However, as user numbers and usage grew, the business began exploring options to improve performance and stability, reduce costs, and cut administration loads. In particular, Hike wanted to reduce latency between cloud data centers.
Focus on product development
“We aimed to move away from a technology stack with single points of failure to a horizontally scaled, highly reliable, distributed systems and managed services environment that enabled us to focus on product development rather than operations,” says Aditya Gupta, Director, Engineering, Hike.
Hike then began exploring the opportunities presented by Google Cloud Platform. The business held a number of executive-level meetings with Google to understand the capabilities, roadmap, and track record of the cloud service. It then decided to proceed with a proof of concept with Google Cloud Premier Partner CloudCover.
The proof of concept revealed that when Cloud Load Balancing was operating, latency between the Google Cloud data center in Taiwan and Delhi, India, was less than the latency between the incumbent cloud provider’s data center and Delhi. Further, compute throughput was up to two times greater on Compute Engine than on the equivalent service, while Hike could complete more then 1 million connections on Compute Engine – up from 500,000 connections on the incumbent service.
Migrate to GCP
The success of the exercise prompted Hike to migrate its messaging app to Google Cloud Platform. “We chose Google Cloud Platform because of its very broad set of services and features,” explains Gupta. “In addition, Google’s innovation mindset and the richness of the partnership would allow us to be onboarded quickly to machine learning services such as Cloud Machine Learning Engine.”
The business called on Google Cloud Professional Services (Technical Account Management) to help ensure a seamless lift-and-shift migration over two months. Google Cloud Professional Services initially undertook a technical infrastructure kickoff to establish a foundation for architecture requirements such as identity and access management and security.
Google Cloud Professional Services team delivers smooth migration
Google Cloud Professional Services worked closely with Hike to map out and deliver the Google Cloud Platform architecture that would deliver the greatest value to the business. The Professional Services team also worked with Hike to resolve product and support queries quickly; provided project background for product and support teams; and organized project meetings and early adopter program access.
In addition, Professional Services team members worked on site at least once a week, coordinated external support during critical migration periods, and coordinated teams in five countries for a single, 17-hour migration marathon. Over 60 days, the business migrated 7,000 processor cores, running virtual machine instances used for messaging infrastructure and analytics, to Google Cloud Platform.
Throughout the exercise, Google Cloud Professional Services worked with CloudCover to educate the customers’ technology teams to achieve proficiency with Google Cloud Platform. The teams soon built up skills and knowledge of best practices and began applying them to the Google Cloud Platform environment.
The Hike Google Cloud Platform architecture comprises virtual machine instances running in Compute Engine; Cloud Storage for unified object storage; networking; a BigQuery analytics data warehouse; Cloud Dataflow to transform and enrich data; Cloud Load Balancing to distribute workloads to maximize efficiency; and Cloud Dataproc to run Hadoop clusters.
Hike is also stepping up its AI & machine learning capabilities. It uses Google Cloud Machine Learning Engine managed, distributed computing capabilities to train complex models on TensorFlow. This powers key use cases such as delightful local sticker recommendations on Hike Sticker Chat. Hike is also investing heavily on AI and machine learning research.
Hike has achieved a range of benefits from its Google Cloud Platform deployment. As well as reduced latency, improved compute throughput, and increased connection handling, Google Cloud Platform managed services have enabled the business to reduce the time and effort required to administer core infrastructure, with the saved resources allocated to improving its messaging product.
“Managed services are beginning to reduce our operational overheads,” says Gupta. “For example, managed instance groups and Cloud Load Balancing are reducing our instance count and costs, thereby reducing involvement from DevOps and developer teams.”
Google Cloud Platform 20% cheaper
Gupta and his team have calculated that running for three years on Google Cloud Platform will cost, including the cost of migration, 20 percent less than on its previous platform. BigQuery is processing queries 20 times faster than a similar service offered by the previous provider, while storing 125TB of data and streaming 1.5TB of data daily. Furthermore, Hike’s analytics pipeline costs 80 percent less than in its previous environment.
“Google Cloud Platform has played an important role in enabling us to continue to innovate and realize our mission of reducing dependency on the keyboard,” says Gupta.

At Arpeely, we’ve developed some of the world’s most advanced advertising technology. Our machine learning (ML) media acquisition platform and “win-win” business model enables customers to bring highly intentful users to their offerings with precision, peace of mind and minimal overhead.
Real-time bidding is a dynamic and intricate process that involves buying and selling ad impressions in milliseconds. Each time a user opens an app or website, advertisers or ad-tech companies acting on behalf of advertisers have milliseconds to bid on ad spaces in real-time auctions, and the highest bidder wins the opportunity to display their ad. This is where Arpeely comes in, leveraging advanced algorithms, innovative UX and funnels to optimize the bidding process and maximize performance for advertisers.
At Arpeely, we use various signals often not used by traditional competitors to outperform the market and zero-down on high-intent and soon-to-be loyal users. For example, in advertising a mobile app, we predict, based on real-time conditions and user context, the user’s likelihood to make an in-app purchase many weeks into the future.
As for the ads themselves, gone are the days of simple banners; today’s ads are “mini products” that captivate and engage users. We employ a wide range of ad formats that go beyond industry standards. Our ads can be immersive videos, compelling messages, interactive experiences like mini-games or mini-apps, or even a multi-step mixture of all of the above. By integrating logic and interactivity, Arpeely enables users to engage with the ad content seamlessly and gauge user intent without leaving their main activity.
Our business model dictates that we don’t get paid if our advertiser doesn’t get paid. We like to say that our algorithms, like water, can trickle into hidden market opportunities missed by the rest of the industry that uses less granular tools. Innovation at the edges of data science and engineering
Today, we handle millions of impressions per second and over a billion ML predictions daily. We are directly connected to seven of the world’s largest real-time bidding exchanges, including Google AdX. We also work very closely with our clients, ranging from prominent startups to companies in the S&P Top 20.
Daily, we tackle complex engineering and data challenges on multiple fronts. On the engineering side, we ensure that every real-time auction receives a lightning-fast response within a strict 150ms timeframe. On the data side, we fire multiple ML predictions per auction and ingest TBs of data daily. On the user-serving front, we serve A/B-tested assets across a long tail of geos and devices, with even the slightest fluctuations in load speeds affecting business dramatically.
Right from the start, we knew we couldn’t do it alone when it came to building our technology stack. When you look at available platforms, it’s clear Google Cloud has a robust architecture that is easy to manage, use and scale, especially for our use cases. They also have reliability and feature completeness which are critical in our line of business.
Under the hood
Building upon Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), we run multiple services that handle our main bidding flows. We utilize Golang for services that run at a large scale and Python for when we prioritize development speed, community and readability. All of these can reach an immensely high scale, which is managed and monitored automatically in GKE. Communication between these services and our Redis (our Google Cloud partner) cluster happens in sub-millisecond latency over Google Cloud’s strong network infrastructure and enables us to run complex real-time logic for every impression.
Once we have tackled the actual bidding, we are left with the challenge of streaming our data into BigQuery for analytics and model training. We utilize a mix of Cloud Pub/Sub, Memorystore and Cloud Storage to create a mechanism capable of ingesting many TBs per day in near real-time without compromising on cost. Real-time data is critical for a company like Arpeely to test and reiterate at a fast pace.
BigQuery is our data warehouse for operational analysis and is an essential part of our business. We use it both as a warehouse, for large-scale computations and in an operational capacity that closes the loop between production, data, and ML retraining. A team of two or three people can manage petabytes at scale with minimal maintenance.
On top of these, we’ve built a state-of-the-art in-house model pipeline suited specifically for ad-tech industry purposes. It allows us to effectively deploy complex solutions — on-the-fly calibration, flexible conversion steps, sampling of heavily imbalanced data sets, adjusting weights, and A/B-tested model deployment and more.
Google Cloud also offers us an entry point for several very useful built-in products that have become deeply embedded in our daily stack and routine. Among them are Operations Suite (formerly Stackdriver), Cloud Profiler, Cloud Storage, Cloud CDN, Cloud SQL, Memorystore, Cloud Scheduler, Error Reporting, and more.
In addition to all the technology, there’s also a human touch. Google’s skilled Customer Success team possesses a unique blend of technical expertise and business acumen, acting as strategic advertisers and opening doors we did not know existed.
