Yesterday we held our final Google Cloud Security Talks event of 2021. Our event focused on zero trust and covered everything from Google’s history with BeyondCorp to our strategic thinking when it comes to applying zero trust principles to production environments. We shared product updates across the portfolio and talked about how zero trust fits into our invisible security vision.

Our opening keynote highlighted many recent security launches, including:
- the general availability of Cloud IDS, which helps detect network-based threats, including attempts to exploit the Apache Log4j vulnerability;
- the new Mute Findings feature for Security Command Center which helps organizations more effectively manage their security posture on GCP based on their policies and requirements;
- and the Threat Horizons report, a new report by the Google Cybersecurity Action Team (GCAT) describing recent threat intelligence observations from teams across Google.
We then brought together security leaders across Google for a panel discussion of our zero trust vision. Our panelists emphasized the need to embrace the fact that security is not static which makes adoption of a zero trust mindset where trust is established via multiple mechanisms and verified continuously an imperative. The session also highlighted how even taking small steps – such as prioritizing specific applications as you begin your zero trust journey – can still have a large impact on improving your security posture.
Next, we covered some recent product announcements from the BeyondCorp Enterprise team, including the new Policy Troubleshooter feature. This session gave users a closer look at new product features across access, signal integrations, and threat and data protection capabilities leveraging machine-learning in real-time.
We then pivoted the conversation and two of our speakers shed more light on Google’s BeyondProd approach. First, we shared our learnings from building a cloud-native security model, which provides significant benefits to both application development and security teams. We outlined different principles you can apply to your infrastructure design and operations in order to strengthen the deployment of your workloads, better secure their communications, and limit their exposure to other workloads, in ways that can ultimately reduce the burden on individual developers.
We discussed how customers can bring BeyondProd to life in their own environments and offer zero trust protection for workloads with Google Cloud capabilities. These sessions featured customers who shared their experiences with VPC-Service Controls and Certificate Authority (CA) Service. We also announced some exciting news: CA Service now supports third-party identity federation and can issue certificates to attest to on-premises third-party identities using Google Cloud workload identity federation. Certificates can be issued for both users and workloads.
Next, in light of the White House effort to deploy a zero trust model across the US federal government, we spent some time sharing how Google Cloud can support government guidance. Google recently announced a $10 billion investment to strengthen cybersecurity, including expanding zero-trust programs, helping secure the software supply chain, and enhancing open-source security. This session gave an overview of how different Google Cloud services align to federal cybersecurity priorities.
Our last session provided an overview of how we are strengthening security and privacy across the Google Workspace platform applying zero trust principles to the applications that allow customers to collaborate effectively with features such as Trust Rules for Drive.

Conversations on Government Security with Dmitri Alperovitch, CrowdStrike’s Founder and Former CTO

As I was preparing for my fireside chat with Dmitri Alperovitch, Founder and Former CTO of CrowdStrike and Executive Chairman of the Silverado Policy Accelerator, for the Google Cloud Government Security Summit taking place on Tuesday, July 20th, I was reflecting about recent developments in cybersecurity, Zero Trust best practices – including aspects of Google’s journey – and the benefits that this approach to cybersecurity brings to the public sector.
As Dmitri and I discussed what we wanted to share during our session at the Government Security Summit, I quickly realized how pertinent the information was to our public sector audience. For that reason, ahead of Tuesday’s event, I wanted to give you a glimpse of what is to come in our fireside chat. Read below for an exclusive preview of what we plan to discuss. Heather: What do you see as the most significant changes in both the attack surface and cybercriminal tactics in recent years? And why do these changes present unprecedented challenges for public sector?
Dmitri: In terms of the threat landscape, the more things change, the more they stay the same. The adversaries haven’t changed that much. It’s actually striking. Not all threats are emanating from governments or state actors – either directly or by providing safe harbor to criminals – but a large portion are. That has not changed. The volume and scale of attacks have grown, however, and become massive. And now, the greatest challenge is that everyone is a target. Before, only top-end institutions and government organizations were facing nation state threats. That has changed either through targeted attacks or accidental ones, such as WannaCry. The question now is “How do we protect the most vulnerable and extend much-needed protection to smaller organizations that do not have deep security expertise or resources?”
Heather: Earlier this year, the Biden Administration released its Cybersecurity Executive Order (EO). What do you see as the most important takeaways and potential impact of the EO?
Dmitri: The Cybersecurity EO is set to have a significant impact. The biggest change is a shift in strategy. For many decades, we all had the mentality that we have to keep attackers out of the network. That is great in theory, but we all know that it is a virtual impossibility with a network of any significant size. Adversaries will find a way in. And, we used to think it was game over once they were in the network.
Then about 10 years ago, we began to see a change. Google led the way with its BeyondCorp strategy as did Lockheed Martin with its sentinel Kill Chain framework. Now, when an adversary penetrates a network, it’s not the end of the game, but the beginning. That is the case if the organization is prepared with a network architecture built around Zero Trust principles. The adversary now has to move laterally, steal credentials, and elevate privileges to get to the resources they want. A Zero Trust architecture can slow them down and give organizations time to detect and eject adversaries from the network. The EO recognizes the power of this approach and has made Zero Trust its fundamental tenet.
Heather: Federal agencies have spent the last 60 days looking at Zero Trust and developing their plans. What do you hope to see? What is critical to accelerating implementation?
Dmitri: The EO establishes a very ambitious timeline, and the US government is not known to move rapidly due to a number of restrictions and considerations. That said, the EO recognizes the idea that logging has to be at the center of modern architecture. Agencies need full visibility into what is going on at endpoints and across the network, have to hunt continuously across networks for adversaries, and must work to rapidly eject them. That is at the core of the EO, and it is a great shift. The private sector should be watching and learning as well.
Heather: What pitfalls should the Federal government look out for in moving forward to implement the EO?
Dmitri: One of the main challenges is the limited authority of the President. Congress is the only branch with the power to change the laws. While the establishment of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) a few years ago allows for hunting across agency networks, CISA still has limited authority. It cannot manage the cybersecurity of more than 120 civilian agencies.
Some agencies are performing well when it comes to security, but we have to recognize that this is not the norm. Not all agencies have the capacity to recruit the best cybersecurity talent, but their needs may be just as great. We need to centralize capabilities and leverage the cloud, like Google, to provide all agencies with the best cyber talent and resources.

Part of being a security leader whose organization is taking on a digital transformation is preparing for hard questions – and complex answers – on how to implement a transformation strategy.
In our previous CISO Survival Guide blog, we discussed how financial services organizations can more securely move to the cloud. We examined how to organize and think about the digital transformation challenges facing the highly-regulated financial services industry, including the benefits of the Organization, Operation, and Technology (OOT) approach, as well as embracing new processes like continuous delivery and required cultural shifts.
As part of Google Cloud’s commitment to shared fate, today we offer tips on how to ask the right questions that can help create the conversations that lead to better transformation outcomes for your organization. While there often is more than one right answer, a thoughtful, methodical approach to asking targeted questions and maintaining an open mind about the answers you hear back can help achieve your desired result. These questions are designed to help you figure out where to start and where to end your organization’s security transformation. By asking the following questions, CISOs and business leaders can develop a constructive, focused dialogue which can help determine the proper balance between implementing security controls and fine-tuning the risk tolerance set by the executive management and the board of directors.
To start the conversation, begin by asking:
- What defines our organization’s culture?
- How can we best integrate the culture with our security goals?
CISOs should ask business leaders:
- What makes a successful transformation?
- What are the key goals of the transformation?
- What data is (most) valuable?
- What data can be retired, reclassified, or migrated?
- What losses can we afford to take and still function?
- What is the real risk that the organization is willing to accept?
Business leaders should ask CISOs and the security team:
- What are the best practices for protecting our valuable data?
- What is the business impact of implementing those controls?
- What are the top threats that we need to address?
CISOs and business leaders should ask:
- Which threats are no longer as important?
- Where could we potentially use spending for more cost-effective controls such as firewalls and antivirus software?
- What benefits do we get from refactoring our applications?
- Are we really transforming, or lifting and shifting?
- How should we perform identity and access management to meet our business objectives?
- What are the core controls needed to ensure enterprise-level performance for the first workloads?
CISOs and risk teams should ask:
- How can we use the restructuring of an existing body of code to streamline security functions?
- How should we monitor our security posture to ensure we are aligned with our risk appetite?
Business and technical teams should ask:
- What’s our backup plan?
- What do we do if that fails?
Practical advice and the realities of operational transformation
Some organizations have been working in the cloud for more than a decade and have already addressed many operational procedures, sometimes with painful lessons learned along the way. If you’ve been operating in the cloud securely for that long, we recognize that there’s a lot to be gained from understanding your approaches to culture, operational expertise, and technology.
However, there are still many organizations that have not thought through how they will operate in a cloud environment until it’s almost ready – and at that point, it might be too late. If you can’t detail how a cloud environment will operate before its launch, how will you know who should be responsible for maintaining it?
Who are the critical stakeholders, along with those responsible for engineering and maintaining specific systems, who should be identified at the start of the transformation? There are likely several groups of stakeholders, such as those aligned with operations for transformation, and those focused on control design for cloud aligned with operations.
If you don’t have the operators involved in the design phase, you’re destined to create clever security controls with very little practical value because those tasked with day-to-day maintenance most likely won’t have the expertise or training to effectively operate these controls.
This is complicated by the fact that many organizations are struggling to recruit and retain resources with the right skills to operate in the cloud. We believe that training current employees to learn new cloud skills, and giving them the time away from other responsibilities, can help build skilled, diverse cloud security teams.
If your organization continually experiences high turnover in security leadership and skilled staff, it’s up to you to navigate your culture to ensure greater consistency. You can, of course, choose to supplement internal knowledge with trusted partners – however, that’s an expensive strategy for ongoing operational cost.
We met recently with a security organization that turns over skilled staff and leadership every two to three years. This rate of churn results in a continual resetting of security goals. This particular team joked that it’s like “Groundhog Day” as they constantly re-evaluate their best security approaches yet make no meaningful progress. This is not a model to emulate.
Many security controls fail not because they are improperly engineered, but because the people who use them – your security team – are improperly trained and insufficiently motivated. This is especially true for teams with high turnover rates and other organizational misalignments. A security control that blocks 100% of attacks might be engineered correctly, but if you can’t efficiently operate it, the effectiveness of the control will plummet to zero over time. Worse, it then becomes a liability because you incorrectly assume you have a functioning control.

Google Cloud’s Metric Scope Makes Multi-project Monitoring Simple

Customers need scale and flexibility from their cloud and this extends into supporting services such as monitoring and logging. Google Cloud’s Monitoring and Logging observability services are built on the same platforms used by all of Google that handle over 16 million metrics queries per second, 2.5 exabytes of logs per month, and over 14 quadrillion metric points on disk, as of 2020. However, you let us know through consistent feedback that the previous construct of Workspaces for Cloud Monitoring was not providing the flexibility needed for your larger scale projects.
Cloud Operation’s New Approach to Multi-Project Monitoring
We’re happy to announce a new model for multi-project monitoring, which replaces the concept of Workspaces. This overhaul is geared toward maximizing the flexibility you have to manage your monitoring environments by introducing Metrics Scopes. Starting today you can associate your Google Cloud projects with multiple Metrics Scopes! Like Workspaces, Metrics Scopes will still be used to store all of the configuration content for dashboards, alerting policies, uptime checks, notification channels, and group definitions. However there is no limit to the number of Metrics Scopes to which you can associate a project. Prior to this change, a project could only be scoped with a single Workspace. Now, there are virtually unlimited possibilities for how you can set up multi-project monitoring. This unlocks a large variety of options, from more granular permissions to mission-focused configurations. At its most simple implementation though: operators/SREs can now create org-wide Metrics Scopes with monitoring configurations focused on infrastructure health. And developers can leverage Metrics Scopes built on a subset of their organization’s projects that allow them to focus on their application’s performance.
How it works
- When you have a collection of projects, Metrics Scopes enable you to view each project’s metrics in isolation as well as in combination with metrics stored by other projects.
- The Metrics Scope is hosted by a scoping project. This scoping project is the Cloud project that is selected in the Cloud Console project picker.
Example
- In this example, Project-SRE is the name of a scoping project to monitor your fleet. You added two developer teams’ projects: Project-Dev-1 and Project-Dev-2, to Project-SRE’s Metrics Scope. If you select Project-SRE with the Cloud Console project picker and then go to the Monitoring page, you view the metrics for all three projects:

- If you select Project-Dev-1 with the Cloud Console project picker and then go to the Monitoring page, you view the Metrics Scope for Project-Dev-1 and you can only see the metrics for that project:

What else is new?
- Metrics Scopes can now monitor up to 375 projects (up from 100).
- New projects automatically start working in Cloud Monitoring without the previous 60-second Workspace creation process.
- If you want to monitor more than one project simply add it to your Metrics Scope:

- Mentioned earlier, the Project Picker in the Cloud Console can be used to navigate between Metrics Scopes in Cloud Monitoring:

- This is now consistent with many other services across Google Cloud. Specifically, you can see how the project picker stays consistent when navigating from Cloud Monitoring to Cloud Logging:

- Additionally, to make your navigation between Metrics Scopes easy we’ve added the new Metrics Scope Tab and Panel in the UI:

Coming Soon
- The Metrics Scope API is coming within the next quarter! This API will enable you to programmatically manage your monitoring configurations and Metrics Scopes.
Current Workspaces users
If you are already using Workspaces in Cloud Monitoring you may have noticed that they converted to Metrics Scopes weeks ago. There is no additional action required and you can start taking advantage of the additional features of Metrics Scopes today.

Companies that are digitally native or in the process of digital transformation have placed an increased operational role on developers and this often creates overlapping sets of responsibilities with Operations and SRE teams. Now multiple developer teams can focus on optimizing the performance of their applications while operators can take a fleet-wide view when maintaining and improving the performance of all of the infrastructure under their purview.For information on configuring a Metrics Scope to include metrics for multiple projects, see Viewing metrics for multiple projects.

Google Cloud Leads the Landscape for Unstructured Data Security Platform: Forrester

As organizations expand their use of cloud computing services, more of their sensitive data inevitably moves to and lives in the cloud. Much of this sensitive data is unstructured and can be challenging to secure. Despite this potential challenge, the usefulness of cloud for data storage and processing is too big for most organizations to ignore and has in turn led to data sprawl, where their sensitive data is spread over many resources, both in the cloud and on-premise. Addressing data sprawl requires solutions that can discover, manage, and secure sensitive data, especially unstructured data, as it spreads.
To help organizations confidently move their sensitive data to the cloud, Google Cloud works diligently to earn and maintain customer trust. Control and transparency are pillars of our approach to offering a trusted cloud. Therefore, we’ve been expanding our capabilities to act on unstructured data as sprawl increases.
Given the importance of these capabilities to our strategy, we are happy to announce today that Forrester Research has named Google Cloud a Leader in The Forrester Wave™: Unstructured Data Security Platforms, Q2 2021 report, and rated Google Cloud highest in the current offering category among the providers evaluated.

The report evaluates the 11 most significant providers with platform solutions to secure and protect unstructured data, spanning from cloud providers to data security-focused vendors. The report notes that “Google offers breadth and depth with built-in data security in the cloud. Google Cloud Platform, Google Workspace, and BeyondCorp Enterprise have underlying data security products and features for protecting customer data.”
Google Cloud tools focused on protecting unstructured data were developed and battle-tested internally at Google to alleviate some of our own data security challenges. This brings the best of Google security to the organizations utilizing Google Cloud and our security tools. The report highlights that “Google productizes capabilities originally developed to secure its own business, and brings a disciplined approach to product enhancements for enterprise requirements. It serves a wide range of enterprise and mid-market, with a focus on emphasizing data protection needs by industry. ”
Google Cloud’s data security strategy focuses on meeting customers wherever they are in their cloud migration journey. The report highlights that “Google further enables a Zero Trust approach with third-party integrations through its BeyondCorp Alliance of partners in device management, endpoint security and gateways.”
Google Cloud received the highest possible score in sixteen criteria, in total receiving the most 5 out of 5 ratings among all vendors assessed. These criteria include: Data Intelligence, Access Control, Deletion, Obfuscation-Scope, Obfuscation-Key Management, Deployment, Security and Risk, APIs and Integration, Data Security Platform Vision, Data Security Execution Roadmap, Performance, Planned Enhancements, Zero Trust Enabling Partner Ecosystem, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Installed Base, and Revenue.
Notably, Google Cloud received the highest possible score in the Obfuscation criteria. Obfuscation can help protect sensitive data, like personally identifiable information (PII), which is critical to many enterprise workflows. Cloud DLP helps customers inspect and mask this sensitive data with techniques like redaction, bucketing, and tokenization, which help strike the balance between risk and utility. This is especially crucial when dealing with unstructured or free-text workloads, in which it can be challenging to know what data to redact. More than 150 detectors combine to power Cloud DLP’s masking, which can be deployed in data migrations and business workloads like real-time data collection and processing. For Obfuscation specifically, the report mentioned that Google “takes a broad view of DLP, which includes in-line redaction of sensitive elements in unstructured data and DLP APIs that extend support to additional data types like images or other media.”
