How Can an IT Manager Get into the Machine Learning Game?

How AirAsia leverages a broad suite of data prep, data streaming, data warehouse, data analytics tools, and AI to dramatically improve ease and speed, while lowering cost. In the process is it also better able to refine pricing, increase revenue, and improve customer experience.

AirAsia’s vision is simple: allow everyone to fly. Founded in 2001, the airline and sister company AirAsia X have grown to service 150+ destinations in 25 markets, using 274 aircraft to operate 11,000+ weekly flights from 23 hubs across the region. While the airline is known as a provider of low-cost airfares to locations across Asia, this is only one part of its value proposition. AirAsia also aims to deliver innovative, personalized products and services that meet the needs of each of its passengers.

Technology is key to AirAsia’s success and, with strong support from Group Chief Executive Officer Tony Fernandes, in 2016 the airline began a five-year program to become a data-first business and a digital airline.

“We wanted to better ensure we were using data correctly to become more agile, efficient, and customer oriented,” says Lye Kong Wei, Chief of Data Science, Group Head at AirAsia.

AirAsia needed technologies and services that could capture, process, analyze, and report on data, while delivering value for money and meeting its speed and availability requirements. The airline also wanted to minimize infrastructure management and system administration demands on its technology team.

Google Cloud the best fit

AirAsia realized only a cloud service could meet its needs and began evaluating the market. The airline then conducted a proof of concept and found Google Cloud was the best fit for its business. It was already familiar with Google Cloud, having deployed G Suite collaboration and productivity applications to its workforce in all countries except China. According to Kong Wei, products such as FormsDocsSheets, and Gmail delivered a considerable improvement in collaboration between various departments, as well as streamlining and automating a range of processes.

The business was particularly excited by the potential of the BigQuery analytics data warehouse to power its digital transformation. “We knew data was a big part of making decisions in the future,” says Kong Wei. “So we needed a platform that could scale to meet our growing appetite for it. Google Cloud—in particular BigQuery—was ideal for this task.”

The AirAsia technology team was impressed by the ease and flexibility with which it could extract, transform, and load customer data from its systems, websites, and mobile applications into BigQuery for analysis. Data, reports, and dashboards were delivered and visualized through Google Data Studio.

BigQuery also scaled seamlessly to support data growth and, as a managed service, required minimal administration from the airline’s technology team. “In addition, with BigQuery, we could process queries and requests much faster than previously and tackle more complex problems,” says Kong Wei. “As a result, we could be more innovative about realizing opportunities,” he adds, citing the benefits of being able to view and understand historical measures of booking curves—a measure of how long it took customers to book before a flight. This improves the airline’s ability to manage revenues.

A broad ecosystem

BigQuery and Data Studio are just two components of a broad ecosystem—powered largely by Google Cloud services—deployed by AirAsia. Pub/Sub provides a scalable message queue that enables AirAsia developers to integrate systems hosted on Google Cloud or externally. Apache Airflow enables the business to create, schedule, and monitor workflows, while Cloud Composer manages the dependencies of PHP and related libraries. App Engine allows AirAsia personnel to develop and host web applications. “Thanks to App Engine, we’ve easily been able to create new applications, services, and APIs powered by the data we have been collecting,” says Kong Wei.

AirAsia is also running the middleware for its APIs in a managed Google Kubernetes Engine environment for increased scalability, resource optimization, and reliability, while Cloud Storage provides storage for data from a range of systems and sources. Dataflow enables the business to transform and process data in stream and batch modes from its website search page as customers look for flights.

Faster deployment and testing

The stability of Google Cloud service means AirAsia has a reliable base from which to launch new products and features. “If we have consistent reliability from our core systems—and Google Cloud incorporates monitoring tools such Cloud Monitoring that enable us to identify issues quickly—developers and product engineers can focus on turning ideas into reality,” says Kong Wei. “With a minimal number of people involved, we can very quickly transform an idea or thought process into a deliverable. Prior to Google Cloud, bringing those ideas to fruition would have been impossible.”

Robust security

AirAsia is also relying on Security Health Analytics, a product that integrates with Security Command Center, to identify misconfigurations and compliance violations in its Google Cloud resources and take action. Security Health Analytics ensures the airline’s budgets go to keeping customers’ travel costs low rather than recovering from security breaches.

The product enables AirAsia to check that resources are configured properly and are compliant with CIS benchmarks as its critical workloads run in Google Kubernetes Engine and App Engine.

“Being able to go to the new Security Health Analytics dashboard eliminates the guesswork of what we have running and if it is secure,” says Muhammad Faeez Bin Azmi, Information Security and Automation Solution Architect. “Now anyone on our team, even non-security professionals, can go to this dashboard and see a list of the misconfigured assets and compliance violations across all of our Google Cloud resources. We can also see the severity of misconfigurations, which helps us prioritize our response.”

“Security Health Analytics has really helped us reduce the amount of time we spend trying to figure out what’s wrong with our resources. It’s allowed us to use our time more effectively to identify and resolve more security issues than we could before.”

A new identity solution

AirAsia had also used a legacy on-premises directory for many years. However, as the company grew and expanded to new markets and regions, it had to manage multiple servers across a number of on-premises data centers and the public cloud, which proved costly and time-consuming.

Its Allstars—the airline’s name for its employees—needed to easily access a number of legacy on-premises apps in addition to a growing number of SaaS apps. As a business, it also needed a more seamless integration between its HR system of record and its identity solution for user provisioning and life cycle management. Solving these challenges with its existing on-premises directory was simply not feasible.

AirAsia brought up its identity concerns with the Google Cloud team, and after a number of conversations, decided to deploy Cloud Identity, Google’s cloud-based Identity and Access Management solution, to help address the identity challenges it was facing.

The airline chose Cloud Identity for a number of reasons—first, it was eager to move to the cloud as quickly as possible. Moving identity management to the cloud was a key enabler of this and the airline’s broader digital transformation. Managing identities from the cloud also enabled the airline to have a single identity and set of credentials for each employee, which they could use to access all the applications they need to be productive, both in the cloud and on-premises.

In addition, deploying Cloud Identity was a key step towards enabling the zero trust security model, which the airline felt was the best approach to strengthen its security posture and fight modern threats. Cloud Identity also integrated seamlessly with its existing technologies, which include not only Google Cloud products like G Suite and Chrome OS but also third-party tools like Citrix, Papercut, and others.

And finally, Cloud Identity offered significant cost and resource savings. With Cloud Identity in place, AirAsia’s IT department could spend less time worrying about managing multiple on-premises directory servers and and could instead focus on delivering value to Allstar employees.

Machine learning employed to increase ancillary revenue

In March 2018, AirAsia established the groundwork to use machine learning to optimize pricing for a range of services and began by using AI Platform to sort and predict demand for ancillary services such as baggage, seats, and meals. “By using AI Platform, we can sort based on data about history to predict the future,” says Kong Wei.

Dialogflow in wide use

With Google Cloud well established within the business, AirAsia is using Dialogflow, a voice and conversational interface development suite (and one of the core components of Contact Center AI) that enables businesses to create engaging AI powered voice- and text-based interfaces such as chatbots and voice apps—to streamline operations and reduce costs

“Tony Fernandes, our Group Chief Executive Officer, motivated us to create a range of metrics that would enable us to respond more quickly and efficiently to customers,” says Yuashini Vellasamy, Product Manager at AirAsia.

This resulted in the initial deployment of Dialogflow in AirAsia’s operational areas, from crew scheduling to internal business tasks.

With Dialogflow, AirAsia is able to provide pilots, crew, catering, and other teams with flight times, capacity and any other relevant information about their assignments. Another bot accepts medical certificates and updates from pilots and crew members unable to make rostered assignments and switches those assignments to other pilots and crews. “This improves our on-time performance and operational efficiency, as we are able to optimize the creation of crew schedules,” says Vellasamy.

AirAsia also uses Dialogflow to power a “safety bot” for airport ground staff. “We tried a lot of tools to encourage staff to advise us when they saw a safety issue—but employee usage was low,” says Vellasamy. “However, when we set up the safety bot, which asks users just four questions about an issue they have observed, we saw an increase in employee interaction, which helps ensure proper safety measures.

Beyond crew optimization and overall safety, AirAsia’s HR department in Asia uses a Dialogflow-powered bot to run a post-orientation engagement program for new employees. The bot follows up with employees about issues from parking to AirAsia’s onboarding buddy program, saving HR employees time from scheduling one-on-one meetings. Dialogflow also powered an employee satisfaction survey of 3,000 team members, resulting in a 30% increase in response rate compared to the previous year.

One of Dialogflow’s benefits is its language coverage, which the airline’s marketing team uses to target customers and prospects across a region with diverse languages and cultures. “For weekly campaigns and promotions, our sales and marketing teams simply update the campaign materials and the changes are reflected automatically in Dialogflow and consequently to users,” says Vellasamy. “This enables us to quickly scale and reach our customers globally.”

An upward trajectory

AirAsia is poised to reap further benefits from Google Cloud as its deployment matures. “On the data side, we’re more advanced, while on the application and programming side we have a long way to go,” says Kong Wei. “We’re on a trajectory upwards—we’re looking at a lot of new ideas and how to embrace and deploy them so we can further our data-first and digital airline agendas.”

In this blog, I’d like to share some background behind the innovations we released in May, why we built them the way we did, and the type of value they can bring your company and your team.

This week, we had the honor to announce that Google has been named a Leader in The Forrester Wave™: Streaming Analytics, Q2 2021 report. Forrester gave Dataflow a score of 5 out of 5 across 12 different criteria, stating: “Google Cloud Dataflow has strengths in data sequencing, advanced analytics, performance, and high-availability”. 

Google has more than a decade of experience in building real-time and internet-scale systems for its own needs, and we are excited to see that our ability to provide customers with a reliable, scalable, and performant platform is bearing fruit. 

This announcement comes on the back of the release of The Forrester Wave™: Cloud Data Warehouse, Q1 2021 report, which also named Google Cloud as a Leader.

On May 26, our team announced a slew of new products, services and programs. Watch a quick summary below:

Meeting you where you are

An important design principle behind all of our services is “meeting you where you are”. This means we aim to provide you with the tools and software you need to innovate on your own terms. Here are three new services that will help you do just that:

Datastream

Datastream, our new serverless change data capture (CDC) and replication service, allows your company to synchronize data across heterogeneous databases, storage systems, and applications reliably and with minimal latency to support real-time analytics, database replication, and event-driven architectures. Datastream delivers change streams from Oracle and MySQL databases into Google Cloud services such as BigQueryCloud SQLCloud Storage, and Cloud Spanner, saving time and resources while ensuring your data is accurate and up-to-date. 

  • Under the hood, Datastream reads CDC events (inserts, updates, and deletes) from source databases, and writes those events with minimal latency to a data destination. It leverages the fact that each database source has its own CDC log—binlog for MySQL and LogMiner for Oracle—which it uses for its own internal replication and consistency purposes. 
  • Datastream integrates with purpose-built and extensible Dataflow templates to pull the change streams written to Cloud Storage, and create up-to-date replicated tables in BigQuery for analytics. It also leverages Dataflow templates to replicate and synchronize databases into Cloud SQL or Cloud Spanner for database migrations and hybrid cloud configurations. 
  • Datastream also powers a Google-native Oracle connector in Cloud Data Fusion’s new replication feature for easy ETL/ELT pipelining. By delivering change streams directly into Cloud Storage, customers can leverage Datastream to implement modern, event-driven architectures.

Looker and BigQuery Omni on Microsoft Azure

Research on multi cloud adoption is unequivocal — 92% of businesses in 2021 report having a multi cloud strategy. We want to continue supporting your choice by providing the flexibility you need to see your strategy through. 

  • This past month, we introduced Looker, hosted on Microsoft Azure. For the first time, you can now choose Azure, Google Cloud, or AWS for your Looker instance. You can also self-host your Looker instance on-premises.
  • We also introduced BigQuery Omni for Azure, which along with last year’s introduction of BigQuery Omni for AWS, will help you access and securely analyze data across Google Cloud, AWS, and Azure. 

The cost of moving data between cloud providers isn’t sustainable for many, and it’s still difficult to seamlessly work across clouds. BigQuery Omni represents a new way of analyzing data stored in multiple public clouds, which is made possible by BigQuery’s separation of compute and storage. By decoupling these two, BigQuery provides scalable storage that can reside in Google Cloud or other public clouds, and stateless resilient compute that executes standard SQL queries. 

  • Unlike competitors, BigQuery Omni doesn’t require you to move or copy your data from one public cloud to another, where you might incur egress costs. You also benefit from the same BigQuery interface on Google Cloud, enabling you to query data stored in Google Cloud, AWS, and Azure without any cross-cloud movement or copies of data. 
  • BigQuery Omni’s query engine runs the necessary compute on clusters in the same region where your data resides. For example, you can query Google Analytics 360 Ads data stored in Google Cloud and query logs data from your ecommerce platform and applications that are stored in AWS S3 and/or Microsoft Azure. 

Then, using Looker, you can build a dashboard that allows you to visualize your audience behavior and purchases alongside your advertising spend. 

Dataplex

We understand that most organizations still struggle to make high-quality data easily discoverable and accessible for analytics, across multiple silos, to a growing number of people and tools within their organization. 

They are often forced to make tradeoffs. For instance, moving and duplicating data across silos to enable diverse analytics use cases or leaving their data distributed but limiting the agility of decisions. 

  • Dataplex provides an intelligent data fabric that enables you to centrally manage, monitor, and govern your data across data lakes, data warehouses, and data marts, while also ensuring data is securely accessible to a variety of analytics and data science tools. 
  • One of the core tenets of Dataplex is letting you organize and manage your data in a way that makes sense for your business, without data movement or duplication. For that, we provide logical constructs like lakes, data zones, and assets. These constructs enable you to abstract away the underlying storage systems and become the foundation for setting policies around data access, security, lifecycle management, and so on. 
  • For example, you can create a lake per department within your organization (e.g. Retail, Sales, Finance, etc.) and create data zones that map to data readiness and usage (e.g. landing, raw, curated_data_analytics, curated_data_science, etc.). 

Once you have your lakes and zones setup, you can attach data to these zones as assets. You can add data from different types of storage (e.g. GCS Bucket and BigQuery dataset) under the same zone. You can also attach data across multiple projects under the same zone. You can ingest data into your lakes and zones using the tools of your choice, including services such as Dataflow, Data Fusion, Dataproc, Pub/Sub, or choose from one of our partner products. Dataplex comes with built-in 1-click templates for common data management tasks.

Helping you innovate everyday

Sharing data is hard. Traditional data sharing techniques use batch data pipelines that are expensive to run, create late arriving data, and can break with any changes to the source data. These techniques also create multiple copies of data, which brings unnecessary costs and can bypass data governance processes. They also fail to offer features for data monetization, such as managing subscriptions and entitlements. Altogether, these challenges mean that organizations are unable to realize the full potential of transforming their business with shared data.

Analytics Hub

To address these limitations, we are introducing Analytics Hub, a new fully managed service that helps organizations unlock the value of data sharing, leading to new insights and increased business value. 

This new service is built on the tremendous experience and feedback we have received over the years. For example, BigQuery has had cross-organizational, in-place data sharing capabilities since its inception in 2010—and the functionality is very popular. Over a 7-day period in April, we had over 3,000 different organizations sharing over 200 petabytes of data. These numbers don’t include data sharing between departments within the same organization.

One week in the life of data sharing in BigQuery

Analytics Hub takes sharing to the next level, making it easy for you to publish, discover, and subscribe to valuable datasets that you can combine with your own data to derive unique insights. 

This includes: 

  • Shared datasets: As a data publisher, you create shared datasets that contain the views of data that you want to deliver to your subscribers. Data subscribers can search through the datasets that are available across all exchanges for which they have access and subscribe to relevant datasets. In addition, the publisher can track subscribers, disable subscriptions, and see aggregated usage information for the shared data.
  • Curated, self-service data exchanges: Exchanges are collections used to organize and secure shared datasets. By default, exchanges are completely private, but granular roles and permissions make it easy to deliver data to the right audience—whether internal or public. 

This is just the beginning for Analytics Hub. Please sign up for the preview, which is scheduled to be available in the third quarter of 2021.

Dataflow Prime

At Google Cloud, we have the great privilege of working with some of the most innovative organizations in the world. And this work provides us with a unique perspective into the future of big data processing. Dataflow Prime is a new platform based on a serverless, no-ops, and auto-tuning architecture that brings unparalleled resource utilization and radical operational simplicity to big data processing. This new service introduces a large number of exciting capabilities but I’d like to highlight three key aspects of the product:

  • Vertical Autoscaling: Dataflow Prime dynamically adjusts the compute capacity allocated to each worker based on utilization, detecting when jobs are limited by worker resources and automatically adding more resources. Vertical Autoscaling works hand in hand with Horizontal Autoscaling to seamlessly scale workers to best fit the needs of the pipeline. As a result, it no longer takes hours or days to determine the perfect worker configuration to maximize utilization. 
  • Right Fitting: Each stage of a pipeline typically has a different resource requirement than the others. Until now, either all workers in the pipeline would have had the higher memory and GPU, or none of them would. Pipelines either had to waste resources or suffer slower workloads. Right Fitting solves this problem by creating stage-specific pools of resources, optimized for each stage. 
  • Smart Recommendations: Smart Recommendations automatically detects problems in your pipeline and shows potential fixes. For example, if your pipeline is running into permissions issues, a Smart Recommendation will detect which IAM permissions you need to enable to unblock your job. If you are using an inefficient coder in your job, Smart Recommendations will surface more performant coder implementations that can help you save on costs.

Candidate360: Google Cloud and Deloitte Product Improves Universities’ Enrollment and Admission Processes

Candidate360, a product of Google Cloud and Deloitte pave way for universities and higher educational institutions to manage admissions and recruitment remotely. Michigan State University recently deployed a student enrollment strategy with Candidate360 that helped them achieve enrollment increase by over 20% and generate $5M in additional net tuition revenue in a single year. Read on to learn more about the solution's real-time and predictive insights gave the university an understanding of the enrollment pipeline as well as leverage AI and predictive analytics functionalities to optimze the overall process.

Given the May 1 deadline for students to enroll, colleges and universities have been carefully watching the numbers of students who put down deposits and commit to a school. Like nearly every other sector in the U.S., colleges and universities have been hit hard by the pandemic and economic downturn, making enrollment numbers more important than ever to maintain financial health and meet student body goals. Technology and AI-based models are providing a way for institutions to manage their admissions data efficiently and cost-effectively.

For example, an admissions officer may want to offset drops in international or out-of-state enrollment by attracting local talent so they can achieve their target class profile. Additionally, institutions have sought to increase the availability and access of higher ed and are intentionally recruiting more low-income and underrepresented populations. New technologies allow admissions officers to have a stronger grasp of the incoming class’ details. With the press of a button, users can switch between overall, in-state, out-of-state, and international enrollment figures. The “How Do Regions Compare to Last Year” tile lets users view the percentage of change and the total number of candidates by region, comparing 2020 and 2021 side-by-side. With access to data, regional recruiters can focus on individual candidates and develop a plan to change the numbers.

An innovative enrollment strategy at MSU

Michigan State University was looking to improve how they managed the recruiting process. They implemented an enrollment strategy that saw their out-of-state enrollment increase by over 20% and generate $5M in additional net tuition revenue in a single year. “We knew we needed better real-time and predictive insights about our enrollment pipeline, and we understood the value of bringing in external data on prospects, but we couldn’t do that by ourselves. 

The solution really helped us be innovative with our analytics and improve our enrollment outcomes,” said someone close to the project at Michigan State University.

Data-driven insights support informed enrollment decisions

Student admissions and marketing groups are turning to Google Cloud and Deloitte to help support their enrollment decisions with predictive, actionable insights across recruiting and admissions processes. The partnership resulted in Candidate360, a solution that helps institutions process and analyze large amounts of data and develop meaningful insights to support their enrollment goals and mission. Part of Google’s Student Success Services offerings, Candidate360 uses artificial intelligence and predictive analytics to help higher education institutions improve enrollment and matriculation, as well as optimize financial aid decisions.

With nine AI/ML models, Candidate360’s capabilities help university leaders, enrollment teams and recruiters do things like:

  • Identify regions with clusters of candidates or see dips in application numbers
  • Deploy marketing resources and admissions staff to the right geographic areas 
  • Understand applicants’ needs in terms of academics, safety, and social activities
  • Make intelligent financial aid decisions to recruit and retain talented students from underrepresented communities
  • Respond faster to the students who are most likely to be accepted and then go on to enroll, stay enrolled, and graduate
  • Work towards the ideal class composition and increase competitiveness with peer institutions

Enhancing the student experience

Enrollment is the first key touchpoint with incoming students, and tools like Candidate360 can help institutions build a student preferences profile throughout the application process. They can understand each student’s prospective major, areas of interest, dream job, and more, allowing colleges and universities to personalize recommendations and advising for enrolled students.

To give brands greater agility to rapidly create high-impact customer experiences and increase its own competitive edge, Brandfolder moved to Google Cloud Platform, using AI-powered solutions and fully managed cloud services to enable an efficient and focused development team to improve customer experiences.

Building a strong brand in today’s hyper-competitive business environment takes vision. It also requires a flexible, easily managed approach to digital asset management (DAM), so marketing professionals and other stakeholders can easily share, store, track, and manipulate assets to build the brand.

Many of today’s leading companies, including JetBlue, Slack, TripAdvisor, Lyft, and HealthONE, rely on Brandfolder to deliver consistent, organized, and efficient brand experiences. Brandfolder provides an easy-to-use platform that can scale across an entire company with little end-user training, empowering customers to distribute digital assets wherever they are needed. Customers also gain much greater insight into how those assets are used, and how to use them more effectively in marketing campaigns and brand messaging.

Brandfolder is constantly advancing its development efforts to introduce new data-driven features without complicating the user experience. Big data, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML) are key to meeting customers’ unique business needs, and essential for Brandfolder to compete in the fast-moving DAM industry. To enhance these capabilities, Brandfolder sought a public cloud provider that could help it scale its data pipeline cost effectively while providing access to advanced AI technologies.

After graduating from the Techstars startup accelerator program in 2013, Brandfolder tried two other cloud providers before standardizing on Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

“We saw a difference with Google Cloud from the very beginning because the interactions felt like a strategic relationship,” says Jim Hanifen, Head of Product at Brandfolder. “Google gave us startup credits and a lot of face-to-face support, which we hadn’t experienced with other cloud providers. We decided to move our entire infrastructure to Google Cloud Platform.”

Building an ML platform for brand intelligence

After performing an initial lift-and-shift migration of virtual machines (VMs) onto Compute Engine, Brandfolder built an ML platform using GCP managed services to seamlessly deliver its data products. The platform leverages Cloud SQLCloud Storage as the data lake, Cloud Dataproc for cloud-native Apache Spark computing clusters, Cloud Composer as the batch job scheduler, Cloud Pub/Sub as the backbone data pipeline, Container Registry to store Docker images, and Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) as the application orchestrator. Cloud Dataflow brings data into the data lake and into BigQuery for analysis.

“Google Cloud made it easy to build an ML platform to quickly iterate through different brand intelligence use cases and release data-driven product features into the Brandfolder platform,” says Ajay Rajasekharan, Head of Data Science at Brandfolder, who describes the architecture in a detailed blog. “We simply ingest raw application and event data on one end and output an ML service on the other.”

For many general use cases, Brandfolder does not need to build custom ML models, and instead relies on pre-trained API models from GCP. For example, it uses Vision API and Video Intelligence API to auto-tag creative assets on import to enable fast, intuitive searches across images and videos. When more product- and brand-specific modeling is required to address unique customer use cases, Brandfolder builds and trains custom ML models using its GCP pipeline or Cloud AutoML, a suite of products built on Google transfer learning and neural architecture search technology. For example, if a Brandfolder customer makes different types of grills, Brandfolder can use AutoML Vision to train a model to recognize the different grills.

Industry-leading security and performance

Google Cloud’s security model helps Brandfolder give existing and prospective customers peace of mind that their data will be protected. Cloud Identity & Access Management (Cloud IAM) provides enterprise-grade access control, while Cloud Identity-Aware Proxy (Cloud IAP) enables remote users to work more securely without the hassles of a VPN client. GCP also isolates cloud resources into projects, making it easy to assign permissions and keep data and VMs organized and segregated.

“With Google Cloud, everything begins and ends with security, which makes things very easy for us,” says Jim. “If we’re under a security review, we can submit a Google security white paper. If a potential customer has security concerns, we tell them we are hosted on GCP, and those concerns go away.”

To give customers even better application performance for accessing their brand assets, Brandfolder uses Cloud Memorystore, an in-memory data store service for Redis, to cache data and provide sub-millisecond data access for production applications.

“It was much easier for us to use Cloud Memorystore versus running Redis on our compute instances,” says Brett. “The high availability, replication across zones, and automatic failover with no data loss are big for us.”

Global private network interconnects between Google Cloud and the Fastly content delivery network (CDN) dramatically reduce latency, allowing Brandfolder’s customers to deliver and update even very large creative assets quickly around the world.

“What’s beautiful about the relationship between Google and Fastly is that if one of our customers uploads a new version of an asset, we can propagate that out to Fastly, and the new version will automatically show up in all the places where it’s referenced,” says Brett.

“The ability to quickly solve problems with AI has a substantial impact on our revenue, and that’s more apparent every quarter. Few of our competitors are doing product- or brand-specific modeling because it takes a lot of time and resources. We overcame those hurdles with Google Cloud.”

Improving employee and customer productivity

Brandfolder also uses Google solutions for real-time collaboration and productivity, using G Suite to connect employees with intuitive, cloud-based apps. Teams use GmailCalendarDocsDriveSheetsSlides, and Hangouts Meet every day to move the business forward. Many of Brandfolder’s customers are also G Suite users, and Brandfolder offers a plug-in that allows them to view their creative assets inside of Docs and pull images in as needed. Customers can also log into Brandfolder with their G Suite credentials, making the solution even easier to use.

“We’ve been using G Suite since the beginning, and it’s helped us collaborate efficiently to build a successful, growing company,” says Jim. “Our teams expect to have that kind of close collaboration, and everyone here enjoys the G Suite experience.”

Driving 99 percent annual business growth

With automated tagging and other innovative AI-based features, Brandfolder is helping customers locate and distribute assets faster. As a result, Brandfolder is building customer loyalty and increasing sales, growing its business by 99 percent year-over-year. Since moving to GCP, Brandfolder has been able to scale its analytics and data pipeline 50x without a corresponding increase in costs and has not had to expand its development team.
