In the competitive world of consumer goods, sustainability matters more than ever. In recent Google survey, 82% of consumers said sustainability is more top of mind now than it was before COVID-191 and 78% said that big businesses have a role to play in helping to fight climate change.2 As well as delivering on customers’ heightened expectations, sustainable business practices can help organizations reduce waste and lower operational costs and even help attract top talent.
Not only is sustainability good for business performance and the bottom line, it’s great for the planet, too. And it’s something we care deeply about at Google. Since our earliest days, we have focused on developing services that significantly improve the lives of billions of people while operating our business in an environmentally sustainable way. In 2007, we were the first major company to become carbon neutral, and in 2017 we were the first to achieve 100% renewable energy. Today, we proudly operate the cleanest cloud in the industry. We’ve also been powering humanitarian, scientific, and environmental initiatives studying geospatial information and making it available for analysis via Google Earth Engine.
Powering the future of responsible sourcing
How does all this relate to CPG supply chains? The world relies on raw materials like palm oil, soy, and cocoa to produce the items we consume every day—such as coffee, chocolate, frozen foods, shampoo, toothpaste, cosmetics, and even household cleaning products. Yet as demand for these materials continues to grow, forests are under threat. Change is needed.
As sustainability moves further into the spotlight, in-demand crops face increased supplier scrutiny. Environmentally conscious companies want to know what percentage of their raw materials is sourced from deforestation-free suppliers—and how they can improve that number. Until recently, many CPG brands have found it hard to get real-time, reliable visibility into operations at a local supplier level, globally.
Google Cloud, in partnership with NGIS, is helping brands gain a deeper understanding of raw material sourcing practices across supplier networks, so they can improve supplier performance and compliance in the fight against deforestation. The TraceMark solution, developed by NGIS, uses Google Earth Engine and BigQuery to analyze and visualize how suppliers behave over time.
Google Earth Engine is the world’s largest archive of open Earth data. It combines a multi-petabyte catalog of satellite imagery and geospatial datasets with planetary-scale analysis capabilities to help people detect changes, map trends, and quantify differences on the Earth’s surface.With Earth Engine, organizations can analyze the potential social, and environmental impacts of the decision they make.
Together, TraceMark, Google Earth Engine and BigQuery help companies visualize, monitor, and measure the impact of suppliers’ farming practices. The process starts with Earth Engine, which aggregates and harmonizes planetary data into images that it has been collecting for decades. Then, boundary maps for different suppliers are created and NGIS applies climate data science and machine learning to turn pixels into insights. Finally, BigQuery and Vertex AI -Google Cloud’s unified artificial intelligence platform are used to produce supplier scoring, which is integrated into downstream ERP and procurement systems to support more informed decision-making.
These efforts support the responsible sourcing of raw materials by making supply chains more agile, transparent and traceable.

Maximizing Storage Efficiency: A Guide to Reducing Point-in-Time Recovery Impact

Point-In-Time Recovery (PITR) is a critical capability for enterprise applications. It allows database administrators to recover from accidental data deletion by restoring their production databases to a time before the incident.
Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL launched support for PITR in July 2020, allowing you to recover from disasters like data corruption or accidental deletion by restoring your Cloud SQL instance to a previous time. We’re excited to announce an additional enhancement to PITR for Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL that makes enabling PITR an even easier decision: for instances with Point-in-Time Recovery newly-enabled, the write-ahead logs being stored for PITR operations (which are the transaction logs that are used to go back in time) will no longer consume disk storage space. Instead, when you enable PITR for new instances, Cloud SQL will store transaction logs collected during the retention window in Google Cloud Storage, and retrieve them when you perform a restore. Because transaction logs can grow rapidly when your database experiences a burst of activity, this move will help reduce the impact these bursts have on your provisioned disk storage. These logs will be stored for up to seven days in the same Google Cloud region as your instance at no additional cost to you.
PITR is enabled by default when you create a new Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL instance from the Google Cloud console, and transaction logs will no longer be stored on the instance for instances that have PITR newly enabled. If you have already enabled PITR on your PostgreSQL instances, this enhancement will be rolled out to your instances at a later point. If you want to take advantage of this change sooner, you can first disable and then re-enable PITR on your instance (which will reset your ability to perform a point-in-time restore to the time at which PITR was re-enabled). On instances with this feature enabled, you’ll notice that consumed storage on your instance will reduce relative to the volume of write-ahead logs (WAL) generated by your instance. The actual amount of storage your logs consume will vary by instance and by database activity – during busy times for your database, log size may shrink or grow. However, these logs will now only be stored on your instance long enough to successfully replicate to any replicas of the instance and to ensure that they are safely written to Cloud Storage; afterwards, they will be removed from your instance.

May is Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month — a time for us to come together to celebrate and remember the important people and history of Asian and Pacific Island heritage. This feature highlights founder Georgene Huang and how her startup Fairygodboss uses easy to use Google Cloud tools to grow and innovate.
Coming from a male-dominated industry like Wall Street, I never thought much about my gender. I was so focused on work that I didn’t feel like I could focus on my identity as a woman of color. That all changed when I found myself thrust into the job market while two months pregnant.
Traditionally, job-seeking sites are built by – and geared towards – men and their professional needs. There was no recruiting site that broke down what candidates who identify as women might expect from a company, let alone women of color like myself. I founded Fairygodboss to create a space where women can crowdsource information about opportunities and employers in order to make informed career decisions.
Fairygodboss
Fair•y•god•boss (noun): A person who elevates women at work.
Fairygodboss is the largest career community for women. In researching potential employers, I had many questions surrounding company culture, maternity leave, and women in leadership positions. While sites like Glassdoor provide high-level details for job seekers, I wanted more concrete examples and data than general salary information and anecdotes about work-life balance.
Fairygodboss began as a job review site geared towards women, but has expanded significantly since our initial launch. In addition to providing free resources like career connections, job listings, virtual recruiting events, community advice, and real research on how companies treat women, we also proactively help companies improve gender diversity. Fairygodboss partners with hundreds of top employers to create a 360-degree recruiting and employer branding program designed to drive female applicants to job postings by showcasing a company’s track record of women in leadership within a company, and their diversity investments.

Google Cloud + Fairygodboss: Data defined
At our core, Fairygodboss is a data-driven company, and we rely on Google Cloud to help us process, store, and analyze user-driven events occurring on the site. As a highly scalable, serverless, and cost-effective data warehousing solution, BigQuery collect millions of events each day, helping us identify where traffic is coming from (and where it goes next), and it produces actionable insights to provide better recommendations, information, and opportunities for women visiting our platform.
After seamlessly connecting our BigQuery data to Data Studio, we have been able to visualize and make sense of all the data we receive on our platform. Unlike some other data visualization tools, Data Studio allows us to analyze data in real time. With tools like BigQuery, we are now able to identify trends and gain a deep understanding for how our users interact with our site.
Google for Startups Accelerator: Women Founders
In order to provide more accurate job recommendations for our users, the Fairygodboss team wanted to build a machine learning prototype to classify our users and jobs into categories to facilitate more effective matching. So we applied for the Google for Startups Accelerator: Women Founders, a three-month digital accelerator program for high-potential Seed to Series A tech startups based in the U.S. and Canada. Along with tailored mentorship and product support from Googlers and industry experts, the Google for Startups Accelerator provided $100K in Google Cloud credits to scale our businesses. The mentorship we received from the Google Cloud technical experts as part of the Accelerator – special shout out to Peter Novig! – empowered us to integrate Cloud AutoML into our systems and ultimately curate more accurate job suggestions for our users.
Not only did the Google for Startups Accelerator program help to achieve our business goals for the year, it was also extremely beneficial to be connected with a cohort of other women founders of color. While we are all building different kinds of businesses across different industries, the guidance around fundraising, scaling teams, and coping with the struggles of being a founder rang true for all of us.
Advancing the community
It can be daunting to launch your own business – and even more so as an AAPI woman. Throughout my career, I am certain I have experienced unconscious bias around my race. Specifically, there have likely been “model minority” stereotypes about my demeanor and math abilities, assumptions that I may be mild-mannered or agreeable. While frustrating, these unfair tropes actually inspired me to see myself beyond others’ perceptions. Why be either analytical or creative, meek or brash, inspiring or agreeable? It’s the ors of life that prevent us from seeing ourselves as truly multi-dimensional individuals. I aspired to be more instead of or, and want my company to be as well.
As an inclusion-focused business, it is extremely important that Fairygodboss mindfully engage with all underrepresented groups. Diversity can be sliced in many different ways, and these intersections lead to great opportunities for change. We have a team of volunteer ‘culture wizards’ at work that provide educational resources and videos for those wanting to learn more about different cultures and identities from members of under-represented groups. We also practice what we preach at Fairygodboss by prioritizing diverse slates and diversity in our own hiring process. We aim for the talent we hire to be representative of the diverse communities we support. It is imperative to take an intentional approach to hiring diverse talent, as it falls on all employers to promote equity and inclusion—there are always ways in which we can all improve. Fairygodboss looks forward to evolving with Google Cloud in 2021 and beyond as we work together to foster inclusive teams around the world.

Le Figaro Uses Google Firebase to Personalize Experiences and Generates 3X Revenue Results

Le Figaro, established in 1826, is France’s oldest and largest daily morning newspaper. The company’s mission is to provide timely, digestible and engaging news to their readers. As one of the first in the industry to offer digital content, Le Figaro engages their subscribers across 11 Android, iOS and web apps that cover news, sports, lifestyle and games. Le Figaro has about 22M monthly active users on their mobile and web apps and 120K paid digital subscribers.
The Challenge
In a saturated news app market, Le Figaro was looking to increase paying customers and to retain existing paid subscribers. To do this, Le Figaro’s development team needed to engage readers with personalized content at the right price point, but how could they pull it off with limited time and resources?
The Solution
Le Figaro used a number of Firebase products to retain existing users and increase paid subscriptions. They sent targeted notifications through Firebase Cloud Messaging reminding customers to follow topics and journalists they found interesting. This helped reduce churn by keeping subscribers engaged in content they valued. They also tested different subscription amounts using Firebase A/B testing, which helped Le Figaro identify the price points that led to the highest number of conversions among both Android and iOS users.

Le Figaro found their biggest increase in paid subscriptions came from embedding real time interactive infographics into their mobile and web app articles. When a user added information into the infographic, it triggered a Cloud Function that accessed data stored in Cloud Firestore and returned a personalized infographic to the user in real time.
For example, in the article “Are you rich?” readers could input their income into the infographic and compare it against different income groups in Paris instantaneously. The infographics was behind a paywall and users had to subscribe to gain access.
According to Le Figaro, this infographic saw 3X the rate of paid subscription sign-ups compared to their other infographics. The team built this interactive infographic system in 3 days instead of their average time of 2-3 weeks using a traditional backend service. Using Cloud Functions and Cloud Firestore, they estimate they were able to reduce development time by 86%.

Spanner uses certain concepts differently from other enterprise database management tools, so you might need to adjust your application to take full advantage of its capabilities. You might also need to supplement Spanner with other services from Google Cloud to meet your needs.
Migration constraints
When you migrate your application to Spanner, you must take into account the different features available. You probably need to redesign your application architecture to fit with Spanner’s feature set and to integrate with additional Google Cloud services.
Stored procedures and triggers
Spanner does not support running user code in the database level, so as part of the migration, you must move business logic implemented by database-level stored procedures and triggers into the application.
Sequences
Spanner does not implement a sequence generator, and as explained below, using monotonically increasing numbers as primary keys is an anti-pattern in Spanner. An alternative way to generate a unique primary key is to use a random UUID.
If sequences are required for external reasons, then you must implement them in the application layer.
Access controls
Spanner supports only database-level access controls using IAM access permissions and roles. Predefined roles can give read-write or read-only access to the database.
If you require finer grained permissions, you must implement them at the application layer. In a normal scenario, only the application should be allowed to read and write to the database.
If you need to expose your database to users for reporting, and want to use fine-grained security permissions (such as table- and view-level permissions), you should export your database to BigQuery.
