Accessing previously locked down medical data
Google Cloud and Quantiphi supported advances in cloud-based machine learning services to reduce infrastructure costs, unlock new paths of treatment, and dramatically reduce the amount of time it takes to evaluate scanned imagery following a stroke. John Hopkins University BIOS Division has been working on medical imaging to accelerate insights from scans on approximately 500 patients from 2,500 hours to 90 minutes, and lead to more accurate decision-making for brain injury patients that will ultimately improve medical outcomes.

Every company these days is becoming a data company whether they know it or not. This results in preparing the company to create an ecosystem for data processing. Traditionally, organisations’ data ecosystems consisted of point solutions that used to provide data services. For example, one of the most common questions we get from customers is, “Do I need a data lake, or should I consider a data warehouse? Do you recommend I consider both?” Traditionally, these two architectures have been viewed as separate systems, applicable to specific data types and user skill sets. Increasingly, we are seeing a blurring of lines between data warehouses and data lakes, which provide customers with an opportunity to create a more comprehensive platform that gives them the best of both worlds.
What if we don’t need to compromise? And we create an end-to-end solution compromising the entire data management and processing stages, from data collection to serving. Thus, Data platforms are typically used to store vast amounts of data in varying formats and doing so without compromising on latency. At the same time, providing a platform for all users throughout the data lifecycle.
Emerging Trends
There are data solutions and architectures we’re seeing and anticipating. Emerging concepts include data lakehouses, data meshes, and data vaults. Some are not new and have been around in different shapes and formats, however, all of them work naturally within a Google Cloud environment. Lets look into both ends of the spectrum of enabling data and enabling teams.
Data mesh facilitates a decentralized approach to data ownership, allowing individual lines of business to publish and subscribe to data in a standardized manner, instead of forcing data access and stewardship through a single, centralized team. On the other hand, a data lake house brings raw and processed data closer together, allowing for a more streamlined and centralized repository of data needed throughout the organization. Processing can be done in transit via ELT, reducing the need to copy datasets across systems. This allows for easier data exploration and easier governance. Data vault is designed to separate data driven and model driven parts, so the way data is integrated in the raw vault enables parallel loading so that large implementations can scale out easily.
In Google Cloud, there is no need to keep them separate. In fact, with interoperability among our portfolio of data analytics products, you can easily provide access to data residing in different places, effectively bringing your data lake and data warehouse together on a single platform.
Let’s look at some of the technological innovations that make this reality. BigQuery’s storage API allows treating a data warehouse like a data lake, letting you access the data residing in BigQuery. For example, you can use Spark to access data residing in the data warehouse without it affecting performance of any other jobs accessing it. This is all made possible by the underlying architecture, which separates compute and storage.
We continue to offer specialized products and solutions around data lake and data warehouse functionality but over time we expect to see a significant enough convergence of the two systems that the terminology will change. At Google Cloud, we consider this combination an “analytics data platform”.
Tactical or Strategical
Key differentiators of Google Cloud’s data analytics platform are being open, intelligent, flexible, and tightly integrated. There are many technologies in the market which provide tactical solutions that may feel comfortable and familiar. However, this can be a rather short-term approach that simply lifts and shifts a siloed solution into the cloud. In contrast, an analytics data platform built on Google Cloud provides modern data warehousing and data lake capabilities with close integration to our AI Platform. It also provides built-in streaming, ML, and geospatial capabilities and an in-memory solution for BI use cases. Depending on your organizational data needs, Google Cloud has the set of products, tools, and services to create the right data platform for you.

Google Cloud Data Heroes is a series where we share stories of the everyday heroes who use our data analytics tools to do amazing things. Like any good superhero tale, we explore our Google Cloud Data Heroes’ origin stories, how they moved from data chaos to a data-driven environment, what projects and challenges they are overcoming now, and how they give back to the community.
For our first issue, we couldn’t be more excited to introduce Google Cloud Data Heroine Lynn Langit. Lynn is a seasoned business woman in Minnesota beginning her eleventh year as the Founder of her own consulting business, Lynn Langit Consulting LLC. Lynn wears many data professional hats including Cloud Architect, Developer, and Educator. If that wasn’t already a handful, she also loves riding her bike at any given season of the year (pictured on the right), which you might imagine gets a bit challenging when you have to invest in bike studded snow tires!

Tell us how you got to be a data practitioner. What was that experience like and how did this journey bring you to GCP?
I worked on the business side of tech for many years. While I enjoyed my work, I found I was intrigued by the nuanced questions practitioners could ask – and the sophisticated decisions they could make – once they unlocked value from their data. This initial intrigue developed into a strong curiosity and I ultimately made the switch from business worker to data practitioner over 15 years ago. This was a huge change in career considering I got my bachelor’s degree in Linguistics and German. And so I started small. I taught myself most everything both at the beginning and even now through online resources, courses, and materials. I began with database and data warehousing, specifically building and tuning many enterprise databases. It wasn’t until Hadoop/NoSQL became available that I pivoted to Big Data…
Back then, I supplemented my self-paced learning with Microsoft technologies, even earning all Microsoft certifications in just one year. When I noticed the industry shifting from on premise to cloud, I shifted my learning from programming to cloud, too. I have been working in the public cloud for over ten years already!

How did you supplement your self teachings with Google Cloud data upskilling opportunities like product deep dives and documentation, courses, skills, and certificates?
One of the first Google Cloud data analytics products I fell in love with was BigQuery. BigQuery was my gateway product into a much larger open, intelligent, and unified data platform full of products that combined data analytics, databases, AI/ML, and business intelligence.
I’ve achieved Skills Badges in BigQuery, Data Analysis, and more. I’ve also achieved Google’s Professional Data Engineer Certification, and have been a Google Developer Expert since 2012.
Most recently, I was named one of few Data Analysis Innovator Champions within the Google Cloud Innovators Program, which I’m particularly excited about because I’ve heard it’s a coveted spot for data practitioners and necessitates a Googler nomination to move from the Innovator membership to Champion title!
You’re undoubtedly a data analytics thought leader in the community. When did you know you moved from data student to data master and what data project are you most excited about?
I knew I had graduated, if you will, to the data architect realm once I was able to confidently do data work that matters, even if that work was outside of my usual domains: adTech and finTech..
For example, my work over the past few years has been around human health outcomes, including combatting the COVID-19 pandemic. I do this by supporting scientists and bioinformatic researchers with genomic-scale data pipelines. Did I know anything about genomics before I started? Not at all! I self-studied bioinformatics and recorded my learnings on GitHub. Along the way I adopted my learnings into an open source GCP course on GitHub aimed at researchers who are new to working with GCP. What’s cool about the course is that I begin from the true basics of how to set up a GCP account. Then I gradually work up to mapping out genomic-scale data workflows, pipelines, analyses, batch jobs, and more using BigQuery and a host of other Google Cloud data products.
Now, I’ve received feedback that this repository has made a positive impact on researchers’ ability to process and synthesize enormous amounts of data quickly. Plus, it achieves the greater goal of broadening accessibility to a public cloud like GCP.
In what ways do you think you uniquely bring value back to the data community? Why is it important to you to give back to the data community?
I stay busy always sharing my learnings back to the community. I record Cloud and Big data technical screencasts (demos) on Youtube, I’ve authored 25 data and cloud courses on LinkedIn Learning, and I occasionally write Medium articles on cloud technology and random thoughts I have about everyday life. I’m also the cofounder of Teaching Kids Programming, with a mission to help equip middle and high school teachers with a great programming curriculum on Java.

Qlik and Google Cloud Combo: Extending Integration of SAP Data on BigQuery

Integrated data for accelerated insights
BigQuery—our fully managed, enterprise data warehouse that can scale up to petabytes on demand and execute queries in seconds—allows SAP customers to consolidate enterprise data silos and confidently derive more use and value from their data. Customers can accelerate and simplify the delivery of SAP data on BigQuery with the latest Qlik Data Integration platform offering for Google Cloud which allows data integration using an automated, near real-time data pipeline through Qlik Replicate, whether data originates from legacy SAP environments, SAP HANA, or SAP application servers. Additionally, Qlik Compose for Data Warehouses can be used to easily generate and automate logical data models from SAP directly in BigQuery freeing up more time for data analysts to leverage advanced built-in capabilities such as BigQuery ML to derive greater value and insights using standard SQL without the need for advanced programming expertise.
Delivering faster results with real-time
Traditional extract-transform-load (ETL) solutions operate on a batch basis, pulling data sets from SAP daily, hourly, or every minute. These tools often require manual mapping of multiple data fields so that data flows accurately. Given SAP’s highly complex table relationships, in which a single transaction can result in multiple changes, this can be a time consuming and tedious process. ETL can also increase the burden on your SAP systems.
Qlik Replicate simplifies this with its intuitive user interface where you can set up real-time data replication between SAP and BigQuery, eliminating the need for manual coding. And, to prevent system overhead, as soon as a new transaction is entered into SAP, the resulting data is replicated into BigQuery in a process known as change data capture (CDC) from SAP’s log layer. This means that data transfer can benefit from high performance with minimal impact on the source system’s resources. The company uses Qlik Replicate to feed corporate data from modules in its SAP system into BigQuery and integrate its varying on-premises databases with the Google Cloud environment. This has yielded game-changing, real-time customer insights for the retailer.

HarbourBridge Schema Assistant Allows Quick, Bulk Migration to Cloud Spanner

Today we’re announcing the HarbourBridge Schema Assistant, which provides a guided schema-design workflow for migrating from MySQL or PostgreSQL to Spanner. HarbourBridge imports dump files (from mysqldump or pg_dump) or directly connects to your source database, and converts the source database schema to an equivalent Spanner schema. The new Schema Assistant capability displays the source schema and Spanner schema side-by-side, highlights errors and walks you through a series of steps to validate and optimize your Spanner schema. It also produces a browsable assessment report with an overall migration-fitness score for Spanner, a table-by-table detailed analysis of type mappings and a list of features used in the source database that aren’t supported by Spanner. It supports editing of table and column names, column types, primary keys and constraints, as well as dropping of tables, columns, foreign keys and secondary indexes.
The new Schema Assistant complements HarbourBridge’s existing data and schema migration capabilities and is a critical step towards our goal of building a complete open-source migration toolkit. HarbourBridge continues to support command-line schema and data migration and turn-key Spanner evaluation.
Complementing the bulk data migration capabilities of HarbourBridge, we are also announcing the ability to migrate change events from MySQL to Cloud Spanner.

Supported Features in Schema Assistant
- Global type mapping. Users can customize the global mapping for how types should be mapped to Spanner consistently across the schema. For example, mapping large integers in source schema to Spanner’s NUMERIC.
- Local type mapping. Users can override the custom type mapping for a given table/column.
- Session management. A session keeps track of all the changes made to the schema mapping.
- Customization of secondary indexes. Users can add, edit and delete secondary indexes to optimize their Spanner performance.
- Customization of foreign keys and interleaved tables. Table interleaving is an important design consideration when migrating to Cloud Spanner as explained in more detail in this blog post.


Features in the pipeline
We are already working to further expand the supported set of schema editing features and welcome your feedback. We are particularly excited to expand the Schema Assistant’s design recommendations for optimizing Spanner schemas e.g. in-depth recommendations for primary key design.
