Indian enterprises are looking to Google Cloud to help them drive digital transformation, identify new revenue generating business models, reach previously untapped consumer markets, and build customer loyalty through greater insight and personalization. Here's what Tata Steel and L&T Financial Services are doing among others.

In the last year, there’s been an upward trend in cloud adoption in India. In fact, NASSCOM finds that cloud spending in India is estimated to grow at 30% per annum to cross the US$7 billion mark by 2022.

At Google, in our conversations with customers, discussions have evolved beyond cost savings and efficiencies. While those are still very relevant reasons for adopting cloud technologies, Indian enterprises are looking to Google Cloud to help them drive digital transformation, identify new revenue generating business models, reach previously untapped consumer markets, and build customer loyalty through greater insight and personalization.

Here are some companies and their stories.

Tata Steel: Mining data and maximizing its power

Tata Steel is a great example of an established enterprise from a traditional industry that is modernizing and embracing cloud computing. With an ambition to be a leader in manufacturing in India and a digital-first organization by 2022, Tata Steel believes smart analytics is key to enhancing operational efficiency and gaining business advantage. 

To organize data from siloed systems across the organization and make it easily accessible to all employees, Tata Steel is using Cloud Search and plans to scale it to more than one million documents and 28 disparate enterprise content sources including enterprise resource planning (ERP) and SharePoint. In fact, Tata Steel is one of the first Indian enterprises to harness the power of Cloud Search to meet some of the most aggressive ingestion demands, with indexing durations reduced from weeks to seconds.

They are also leveraging Google Cloud Platform (GCP) services like Google Cloud Storage and BigQuery to build their data lake and enterprise data warehouse so they can take advantage of advanced analytics and machine learning. Managed services such as AI Platform further enable Tata Steel to manage end-to-end AI/ML workflows within the GCP console. This complements their existing on-premise reporting and analytics tools, and brings data management to the forefront of everything they do—from forecasting market demand to predictive equipment maintenance.

“Digital is not just a goal, it’s become a way of life. We are digitizing everything from the deployment of factory vehicles to improving material throughput to marketing and sales. As a result, we have petabytes of structured and unstructured data that is not only waiting to be mined, but that we can generate intelligence from to create opportunities across our multiple lines of business using GCP,” said Sarajit Jha, Chief Business Transformation & Digital Solutions at Tata Steel.

Helping L&T Financial Services reach customers in rural communities

In rural communities, quick access to financial services can make a tremendous difference to livelihoods. L&T Financial Services provides farm-equipment finance, micro loans and two-wheeler finance to consumers across rural India backed by a strong digital and analytics platform. Their digital-loan approval app, which runs on GCP, makes it significantly faster and easier for people to apply for financial assistance to purchase important things such as farming equipment and two-wheelers. It also helps rural women entrepreneurs get quicker access to funds for their businesses through micro loans.

L&T Financial found G Suite to be a far better collaborative tool to help staff work together efficiently. Employees can interact with each other in real time using Hangouts Meet, and the task of information sharing is more seamless and secure through Drive. BigQuery also helps L&T Financial Services generate behavior scorecards to track credit quality of its micro-loan customers.

“Cloud is the technology that enables us to achieve scale and reach. Today there are countless data points available about rural consumers which enable us to personalize our products to serve them better. With access to faster compute power, we can also on-board consumers more efficiently. Our rural businesses have clocked a disbursement CAGR of 60% over the past three years.” said Sunil Prabhune, Chief Executive-Rural Finance, and Group Head-Digital, IT and Analytics, L&T Financial Services.

Creating conversational connections for Digitate’s customers

Digitate, a venture of TCS (Tata Consultancy Services), has integrated Dialogflow into its flagship brand ignio, an award-winning artificial intelligence platform for driving IT operations, workload operations and ERP operations for diverse enterprises. This integration is the next step in ignio’s product development journey, and will enable users to chat or talk with ignio to detect issues, triage problems, resolve them and even predict system behavior.

“ignio combines its unique self-healing AIOps capabilities for enterprise IT and business operations with Dialogflow’s AI/ML-based, easy to use, natural and rich conversational capabilities to create an unparalleled, intuitive and feature-rich experience for our customers,” says Akhilesh Tripathi, Head of Digitate.

Indian enterprises going G Suite

The base of Indian enterprises that are making the switch to G Suite to streamline their productivity and collaboration also continues to grow. Sharechat, BookMyShow, Hero MotorCorp, DB Corp and Royal Enfield are now able to move faster within their organizations, using intelligent, cloud-based apps to transform the way they work.

A hybrid and multi-cloud future in India

IDC predicts that by 2023, 55% of India 500 organizations will have a multi-cloud management strategy that includes integrated tools across public and private clouds. Healthcare breakthroughs change the world and bring hope to humanity through scientific rigor, human insight, and compassion. We believe AI can contribute to this, with thoughtful collaboration between researchers, healthcare organizations and the broader ecosystem. 

Today, we’re sharing exciting progress on these initiatives, with the announcement of limited access to Google’s medical large language model, or LLM, called Med-PaLM 2. It will be available in coming weeks to a select group of Google Cloud customers for limited testing, to explore use cases and share feedback as we investigate safe, responsible, and meaningful ways to use this technology. 

Med-PaLM 2 harnesses the power of Google’s LLMs, aligned to the medical domain to more accurately and safely answer medical questions. As a result, Med-PaLM 2 was the first LLM to perform at an “expert” test-taker level performance on the MedQA dataset of US Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE)-style questions, reaching 85%+ accuracy, and it was the first AI system to reach a passing score on the MedMCQA dataset comprising Indian AIIMS and NEET medical examination questions, scoring 72.3%.

Industry-tailored LLMs like Med-PaLM 2 are part of a burgeoning family of generative AI technologies that have the potential to significantly enhance healthcare experiences. We’re looking forward to working with our customers to understand how Med-PaLM 2 might be used to facilitate rich, informative discussions, answer complex medical questions, and find insights in complicated and unstructured medical texts. They might also explore its utility to help draft short- and long-form responses and summarize documentation and insights from internal data sets and bodies of scientific knowledge.

Innovating responsibly with AI

Since last year, we’ve been researching and evaluating Med-PaLM and Med-PaLM 2, assessing it against multiple criteria — including scientific consensus, medical reasoning, knowledge recall, bias, and likelihood of possible harm — which were evaluated by clinicians and non-clinicians from a range of backgrounds and countries. 

Med-PaLM 2’s impressive performance on medical exam-style questions is a promising development, but we need to learn how this can be harnessed to benefit healthcare workers, researchers, administrators, and patients. In building Med-PaLM 2, we’ve been focused on safety, equity, and evaluations of unfair bias. Our limited access for select Google Cloud customers will be an important step in furthering these efforts, bringing in additional expertise across the healthcare and life sciences ecosystem. 

What’s more, when Google Cloud brings new AI advances to our products, our commitment is two-fold: to not only deliver transformative capabilities, but also ensure our technologies include proper protections for our organizations, their users, and society. To this end, our AI Principles, established in 2017, form a living constitution that guides our approach to building advanced technologies, conducting research, and drafting our product development policies. 

From AI to generative AI 

Google’s deep history in AI informs our work in generative AI technologies, which can find complex relationships in large sets of training data, then generalize from what they learn to create new data. Breakthroughs such as the Transformer have enabled LLMs and other large models to scale to billions of parameters, letting generative AI move beyond the limited pattern-spotting of earlier AIs and into the creation of novel expressions of content, from speech to scientific modeling. 

Google Cloud is committed to bringing to market products that are informed by our research efforts across Alphabet. In 2022, we introduced a deep integration between Google Cloud and Alphabet’s AI research organizations, which allows Vertex AI to run DeepMind’s groundbreaking protein structure prediction system, AlphaFold.

Much more is on the way. In one sense, generative AI is revolutionary. In another, it’s the familiar technology story of more and better computing creating new industries, from desktop publishing to the internet, social networks, mobile apps, and now, generative AI.

Building on AI leadership

Additionally, today we’re announcing a new AI-enabled Claims Acceleration Suite, designed to streamline processes for health insurance prior authorization and claims processing. The Claims Acceleration Suite helps both providers of insurance plans and healthcare to create operational efficiencies and reduce administrative burdens and costs by converting unstructured data into structured data that help experts make faster decisions and improve access to timely patient care. 

On the clinical side, last year we announced Medical Imaging Suite, an AI-assisted diagnosis technology being used by Hologic to improve cervical cancer diagnoses and Hackensack Meridian Health to predict metastasis in patients with prostate cancer. Elsewhere, Mayo Clinic and Google have collaborated on an AI algorithm to improve the care of head and neck cancers, and Google Health recently partnered with iCAD to improve breast cancer screening with AI.

From these examples and more, it’s clear that the healthcare industry has moved from testing AI to deploying it to improve workflows, solve business problems, and speed healing. With this in mind, we expect rapid interest in and uptake of generative AI technologies. Healthcare organizations are eager to learn about generative AI and how they can use it to make a real difference.

Looking ahead

The power of AI has reinforced Google Cloud’s commitment to privacy, security, and transparency. Our platforms are designed to be flexible, including data and model lineage capabilities, integrated security and identity management services, support for third-party models, choice and transparency on models and costs, integrated billing and entitlement support, and support across many languages. 

While we’ll have some innovations like Med-PaLM 2 that are tuned for healthcare, we also have products that are relevant across industries. Last month, we announced several generative AI capabilities coming to Google Cloud, including Generative AI support in Vertex AI and Generative AI App Builder, which are already being tested by a number of customers. Developers and businesses already use Vertex AI to build and deploy machine learning models and AI applications at scale, and we recently added Generative AI support in Vertex AI. This gives customers foundation models they can fine-tune with their own data, and the ability to deploy applications with this powerful new technology. We also launched Generative AI App Builder to help organizations build their own AI-powered chat interfaces and digital assistants in minutes or hours by connecting conversational AI flows with out-of-the-box search experiences and foundation models.

As AI proves its value, it’s likely there will be increased focus on high-quality data collection and curation in healthcare and life sciences. Improving the flow and unification of data across health care systems, referred to as data interoperability, is one of the most important building blocks to leveraging AI, and it helps organizations run more effectively, improve patient care, and helps people live healthier lives. We expect to continue our investments in technology, infrastructure, and data governance.

We’re committed to realizing the potential of this technology in healthcare. By working with a handful of trusted healthcare organizations early on, we’ll learn more about what can be achieved, and how this technology can safely advance. Natural language understanding (NLU) is getting increasingly better at solving complex problems and these language breakthroughs are creating big waves in Artificial Intelligence. For example, new language models are enabling Everyday Robots to create more helpful robots that can break down user instructions and have even enabled people to generate imaginative visuals from complex text prompts

These leaps in NLU are powered by neural networks trained to understand human language. This technology has greatly advanced since the introduction of Google’s Transformer architecture in 2017 with the introduction of large models trained on massive amounts of data like GPT-3 and, even more recently, with GLaMLaMDA, and PaLM. This latest generation of models are called Large Language Models (LLMs) because of their sheer size and the vast volumes of data on which they are trained, and they can be applied to a range of tasks to create more powerful digital assistants, generate better search results and product recommendations, enforce smarter platform curation and safety features, and much more. 

For these reasons, we’re pleased to announce we’ve updated the Google Cloud Natural Language (NL) API with a new LLM-based model for Content Classification. 

With an expansive pre-trained classification taxonomy, the newest version of Content Classification from the Natural Language API leverages the latest Google research to improve customer use cases spanning actionable insights on user trends, to ad targeting, to content-based filtering. In this article, we’ll explore the NL API’s new capabilities, which are the first of many efforts we’ll be making to bring the power of LLMs to Google Cloud. 

How LLMs help machines understand human language 

As Google Cloud VP and General Manager of AI and Industry Solutions, Andrew Moore has argued, if computer systems become more conversant with natural human languages, they become a foundation for more sophisticated use cases, able to not only understand user intent but also create complex bespoke solutions. Google has been a leading research force in this space, with LLM projects like LaMDAPaLM and T5 contributing to the Cloud NL API’s improved v2 classification model.

Parsing language is a difficult AI task for machines due in part to the contextual and individual interpretation of words or phrases. The word “server,” for example, could refer to a computer, a restaurant employee, or a tennis player. To understand the word, a model needs to be trained around not only a basic definition but also the context and positioning of the word within a sentence or conversation and its evolving connotations. Because they process voluminous training data via Transformers, LLMs are well-suited to this type of work. 

Thanks to the integration of Google’s latest language modeling technology, and an updated and expanded training data set, the next generation of the Content Classification API not only has over 1,000 labels (up from around 600 previously), but now also supports 11 languages (with Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russia, Spanish, and Dutch joining previously-available English)—and does so with improved accuracy.

​​AI raises questions about the best way to build fairness, interpretability, privacy, and security into these new systems in order to benefit people and society. At Google, we prioritize the responsible development of AI and take steps to offer products where a responsible approach is built in by design. WayFair and Google Cloud Get Together to Raise the Bar on World-class Experience!

To fuel a culture of collaboration and experimentation, WayFair teamed up with Google Cloud for Machine Learning Hackathon in early December. Read to understand the five categories event participants worked on and reflections on AI/ML innovations.

On Dec 9th and 10th, Wayfair and Google Cloud came together for the inaugural Wayfair-Google Cloud Machine Learning Hackathon. Wayfair firmly believes that hackathons are a great way to fuel a culture of collaboration and experimentation. To fuel Wayfair’s incredible pace of innovation at scale, it’s team of more than 3,000 technologists is constantly experimenting and taking smart risks. It’s test-and-learn culture empowers everyone to think critically and creatively, and take big swings to raise the bar on its world-class experience. 

The Wayfair-Google Cloud Machine Learning Hackathon was all about getting Wayfairians excited about and enabled on new technology. More specifically, this event was a contained test environment for Wayfair innovators to validate AI and ML tools in order to understand how to get better insight from their data. The projects worked on during this hackathon will help Wayfair build new use cases that could impact the business and the end customer in new and productive ways. Google Cloud’s focus for this Hackathon was to enable Wayfairains to harness the power of Machine Learning and AI to enable their own goals around continual improvement and relentless customer focus. 

Prior to the event, Wayfair Data Scientists and Machine Learning Engineers who signed up and submitted ideas for the Hackathon were invited to optional Google Cloud enablement and training sessions. Google Cloud set up classrooms in Qwiklabs on topics including, but not limited to, BigQuery, Vertex AI, and Natural Language AI, so that all Hackathon participants could try out new technologies and tools in a learning environment. Google Cloud subject matter experts were available to field any questions Wayfairians had about the use cases they were hacking on. 

The Hackathon was a hybrid virtual & physical event that hosted 67+ innovators, 49 of which registered for Google Cloud supported ideas. 15 judges from both Google Cloud and Wayfair oversaw the event. The esteemed list of judges included Steven Conine, Wayfair’s Co-Founder and Co-Chairman who has helped pave the way for the development of practical applications of next-generation technologies like augmented reality. The judges measured and evaluated the success of a project based on the following criteria:

  • “Wow Factor”: How innovative is the project?
  • Impact: How impactful is the project to Wayfair?
  • Polish: How complete is the project?
  • Presentation Quality: How clear and consistent is the demo? 

The theme of the Hackathon was Machine Learning and AI. Teams were able to collaborate with participants globally, either in-person or virtually, and work together on projects in five categories:  Relentless Customer Focus, Always Improving, Google’s Choice, People’s Choice, and Hackers’ choice. 

At the end of the two days there were winners in all 5 categories. The Google’s Choice award went to “Entity Extraction for Order Matching”. Team “Project Clippy” was named both Hackers’ Choice and the winners of the Relentless Customer Focus category. See below for the results of the 5 categories: 

  • Relentless Customer Focus and Hackers’ Choice
    • Winning Team: Project Clippy
    • Hackers: Misha Balyasin, Alex Saad, Leo Smerling, and Gabriele Lanaro
    • This project provided a gamified experience to make the process of leaving a product review even more seamless. 
  • Always Improving
    • Winning Team: Customer Causal MetaLeaners
    • Hackers: Colin Gray, Irene Wang, Huy Vo Tran, Wenhao Xu, and Santiago Velez Ferro
    • Team Customer Causal MetaLeaners worked to build lightweight procedure(s) for computationally distributed, multi-target, customized loss functions to make causal meta-learners more applicable to real-world Wayfair problems.
  • Google’s Choice Award:
    • Winning Team: Entity Extraction for Order Matching
    • Hackers: Roger Bock, Bradley West, Sina Moeini, and Jonathan de Melker Worms
    • This team built out a solution to use text models to extract and identify the products that customers purchased from user reviews.
  • People’s Choice:
    • Winning Team: KNN and ANN on Vertex AI
    • Hackers: Santosh Jhingade, Ashrith Marpaka, Nikhil Bhaip, Adam Schulze, and Brandon Sanders
    • This team used Vertex AI to expand the impact they can have on suppliers and customers by providing accurate and real-time information of products that match either description or image.

Wayfair leaders reflected on the two days and shared their input. Matt Ferrari, Head of Ad Tech, Customer Intelligence, and Machine Learning; Engineering and Product at Wayfair said, “Wayfair has a lot of vendors, but very few strategic partners, and Google is that. Our Partner.” “Thank you all for the participation! I’m grateful to Google, and the many others for helping lead a successful event.” 

Wayfair partners with Google Cloud to optimize performance and resiliency, support scaling data-driven decisions, and Increase employee productivity. “Our category is ripe for innovation, and our partnership with Google Cloud helps us ensure that great ideas can come from anywhere by empowering our technologists with cutting-edge products and solutions,” said Ferrari. “We’re proud to partner on efforts like hackathons that align with our team’s eagerness to work on complex, rewarding problems that push the envelope and challenge us to always think big.”

At first Google Cloud won Wayfair over with the speed, reliability and performance of their technology. Hackathons like this one exemplify that what is equally as important is Google Cloud’s willingness to work side-by-side with Wayfair at every level to enable a culture of innovation. Case Study: Twitter is Taking Their CX to The Next Level with AutoML

Twitter Spaces Engineering team is making it easier for customers to listen to live conversations with AutoML. Read to know how the company is offering personalized recommendations to their customers with machine learning (ML) and cloud technology.

Editor’s note: Since launching its Spaces feature, Twitter has demonstrated that hearing people’s voices can bring conversations on Twitter to life in a completely new way. Next, it aimed to make it easier for customers to join and listen to live conversations they personally care about. In this blog, we learn how the Twitter Spaces Engineering team is bringing this vision to life with AutoML, powering a new ML heuristic which serves personalized recommendations to Twitter customers. Since Twitter introduced Spaces in 2020 to enable live audio conversations on its platform, the Twitter Spaces Engineering team has been continually testing, building, and updating this feature in the open. Today, anyone can join, listen, and speak in a Space on Twitter, and the feature’s popularity has taken off. But this success also poses a challenge: with millions of people creating and joining Spaces at any time, how can they find the Spaces to engage with while they’re happening? Taking this as an opportunity to further improve the experience of its customers, Twitter has turned to machine learning (ML) and cloud technology for answers.

“ML fits into the natural progression of Twitter consumer and revenue product building, especially for a product feature such as Spaces,” explains Diem Nguyen, Senior Machine Learning Engineer and Data Scientist at Twitter. “We launched Spaces with a base-line algorithm using the ‘most popular’ heuristic which assumes that if a Space is popular, there’s a good chance you’d like it too. But our aim is to leverage ML to surface the most interesting and relevant Spaces to a particular Twitter customer, making it easier for them to find and join the conversations they personally care about. This is a complex functionality that Google Cloud ML capabilities help us to enable.”

Setting the stage for building new features with limited ML resources

While looking for the right tools to power this vision, Nguyen and her team started evaluating in December 2021 whether the Vertex AI platform and AutoML in particular could solve challenges observed when they first started building Spaces. These included a lack of dedicated ML resources to build and deploy the product feature, and the need to work on a multi-cloud environment.

“We had three key questions in mind during our assessment,” Nguyen explains. “Can we realistically deploy the AutoML model off-platform? Once deployed, can it solve for the request load that we get from the service we’re serving (in this case, the Spaces tab)? And finally, can we develop and maintain such a solution without a dedicated team of ML experts for this project?” The answer to all three questions was yes.

Positive answers motivated the Spaces Engineering team to take the solution to production in February 2022. “We started using AutoML Tables to train high-accuracy models with minimal ML expertise or effort, alleviating our resource constraint,” says Nguyen of the results. “Soon AutoML also stood out for its high performance and for supporting easy deployment beyond the Google Cloud Platform, making it ideal for this project hosted in a multi-cloud environment.”

Increasing customer engagement at speed with accurate ML predictions

With a classification model in place to predict the probability of user engagement in a particular Space, Twitter now aims to optimize its model with aggregated data around Twitter features that can help it better understand customer preferences. For example, if a customer has historically engaged with a particular topic and a new Space matches that topic, the ML model increases the score of that Space being served to that user on the Spaces tab.

Because Spaces are live audio conversations, the Spaces tab needs to be ranked to customers in near real time so they don’t miss out. With this in mind, Twitter’s model currently performs 900 queries per second on the Spaces tab, and evaluates 50,000 candidates per second. Meanwhile, 99% of these requests are faster than 100 milliseconds, and 90% of requests are faster than 50 milliseconds.

To measure the success of this project, Nguyen’s team conducted A/B experiments around key customer engagement metrics–A stands for the ‘most popular’ heuristic previously in production, and B is the new AutoML model which seeks to personalize Spaces recommendations to the interests of individual Twitter users. Three months into the project, the numbers were encouraging. “After deploying our AutoML Tables solution we saw an increase of 1.96% in Spaces daily active customers, which is one of our key metrics. We also noticed an increase of 1.99% in Spaces join in rates, and an increase of 8.42% in user clicks to explore a Space,” Nguyen shares. “These are positive signals that users are now engaging more with the Spaces tab service on the Twitter app, which is exactly what we set out to do with this project.”

Powering new use cases with hands-off ML frameworks

With this first solution running in production to improve the performance of the Spaces tab, Nguyen starts to ask how else it might support the experience of Twitter users moving forward. “The Spaces tab is a small surface on the Twitter app. With our current ML solution we’re some distance away from serving our home tab traffic, which is where a lot of our traffic happens and therefore would involve a much bigger-scale operation. Getting there will take some work but we’re evaluating the possibility of optimizing our model performance for this in collaboration with Google Cloud,” says Nguyen.

“As a product-led company, we focus on continually improving the customer experience and we want to iterate faster to get to that point. AutoML brings that value to our product teams because it is so hands-off. You don’t need to write any model code in order to reap the benefits from this machine learning framework; AutoML automatically experiments with many different model architectures and comes up with a state-of-the-art model that addresses your needs. So while it is not a one-size-fits-all solution, it is a great solution with the potential to power many more Twitter use cases,” she concludes.
