A Google-commissioned study by IDG points at the growing relevance of data analytics and intelligence tools in empowering businesses to not just overcome the aftermath of the global pandemic, but also build a competitive edge using data.

As we think about economic recovery from COVID-19—both inside Google and outside through working with Google Cloud customers—we’ve made many important observations. Among them is the recognition that the ways software developers and IT practitioners work together will shift in the post COVID-19 world. Our economic recovery today will look different than past recoveries, and on a fundamental level, the way we innovate will be different than it’s ever been before.

Right now, we’re entering a new phase of cloud computing, where businesses have shifted from making tactical infrastructure decisions, to making larger IT decisions with an eye towards enabling transformation throughout the company. Data, and what we can do with that data, is key to this transformation. And how companies put data in the hands of every employee to help catalyze transformation and solve the most important and impactful opportunities in their industries is at the core.  

A recent Google-commissioned study by IDG highlighted the role of data analytics and intelligent solutions when it comes to helping businesses separate from their competition. The survey of 2,000 IT leaders across the globe reinforced the notion that the ability to derive insights from data will go a long way towards determining which companies win in this new era.

Data analytics and intelligence were prioritized during COVID-19

The results of the IDG study show a separation amongst those organizations that embrace the capabilities of today’s data analytics and AI/ML tools and those that do not. When COVID-19 hit, many organizations cancelled IT initiatives, with 55% of respondents delaying or cancelling at least one technology project. However, 32% of respondents accelerated or introduced initiatives around building out or improving the use of data analytics and intelligence. IT leaders realize how critical data is to their future success, even when resources are scarce.

Digital-focused companies are faster to embrace advanced intelligence tools

Furthermore, enthusiasm for big data analytics, AI, and ML technologies is highest among companies who are further along in their digital transformation journeys. Fifty-four percent of companies who identify as “Fully digitally transformed” or “Digital native” are using or considering using these tools, vs. the global average of 37%. And, these same organizations are embracing the promise of AI more than their peers. Forty-eight percent felt that “Embedded AI across our full stack of cloud solutions will be critical” vs 39% of digital conservatives. These companies realize these digital tools enable them to be more resilient, agile, and prepared for whatever the future brings.

Companies are turning to cloud to maximize insights from data

As companies tap into the promise of data analytics and AI/ML, they are turning to cloud for help. When considering which cloud providers to work with, 78% of respondents said big data analysis is a “must have” or a “major consideration,” which placed this capability at the top of the list of consideration factors. This is not surprising, as cloud solutions address the most common pain points and barriers to innovation. Three of the respondents’ top four areas impeding innovation are addressed by cloud: Insufficient IT & developer skill sets (1st), security risks and concerns (2nd), and legacy systems and technologies (4th). Plus, cloud makes it easier to quickly launch a project, scale up or scale down, and pay for only what you use.

Improving Patient Outcomes with SAVI and Google Cloud’s Innovative Surgical Instrument Tracking

Powered by Vertex AI (Google Cloud’s platform for accelerating development and deployment of machine learning models into production), SAVI (Semi Automated Vision Inspection)1 is transforming surgical instrument identification and cataloging, leading to fewer canceled surgeries and easing pressure on surgery waitlists.

Max Kelsen, an analytics and software agency that specializes in machine learning, has worked closely with Google Cloud and Johnson & Johnson MedTech to create a system that can manage tens of thousands of individual devices, their characteristics, and how they apply to each set or tray used by a surgeon. SAVI does this while delivering a one in 10,000 real-world error rate, much faster and more accurately than manual processes currently in use across the industry. Implementing SAVI can also unlock end-to-end visibility and traceability across the surgical set supply chain and provide advanced analytics and insights.

Eliminating time-consuming manual processes

Surgeons need a large number of specialist instruments and devices to complete complex, delicate procedures. Because each tray of these instruments can typically cost more than $350,000, and having every type of set on shelf at every surgical facility is not feasible, manufacturers generally loan them to hospitals for procedures, such as inserting one of the manufacturers’ implants into a patient’s knee. Once a procedure is complete, the hospital returns the instrument tray to the manufacturer for storage and re-distribution to other hospitals as needed.

Each time a hospital returns a tray, the manufacturer needs to check that each instrument is there, correctly placed, cleaned, and fit for the purpose of the next procedure. As each set may hold more than 400 instruments, completing this process manually is complex and time-consuming. While each tray is checked before and after surgery at the hospital, and again when it arrives and leaves the manufacturer’s facility, Max Kelsen finds that 5% of surgeries can still be affected by missing, broken or bent instruments. This has a severe downstream impact on private hospitals in particular, directly affecting patient safety and outcomes; in Australia, for example, around 60% of surgeries are performed in private hospitals.

Johnson & Johnson MedTech has 60,000 surgical trays across the Asia-Pacific, and loans these trays out about 100,000 times per month. The manufacturer approached Max Kelsen to help design and develop a solution to make the supply chain more efficient, and to give more visibility into asset movement. As a Google Cloud Partner specializing in applying machine learning at scale in healthcare contexts, Max Kelsen had the expertise and track record to meet Johnson & Johnson MedTech’s need for a globally scalable solution that was engineered for quality and performance.

The first step was to establish a baseline for the project by determining how long the manufacturer’s team took to process each tray, and to set an efficiency number. We then spent six months determining and evaluating how to deliver a robust, accurate solution that outperformed current manual and labor-intensive methods in processing instruments and trays, globally. Our work included extensive technical feasibility research involving a representative sample for the variety and complexity of sets, trays, and devices needed for different types of surgery, including orthopedics, spinal trauma, and maxillofacial groups.

Working with Google Cloud to accelerate and de-risk the project

This is a familiar problem that is industry-wide. The issue has been widely explored and tried with a number of technologies over several years without producing the scalability and performance results required to make this an appropriate and feasible solution. Google Cloud partnered with Max Kelsen to accelerate and de-risk this large and strategic project for a mutual customer.

Technical feasibility took four months, prior to a year-long production pilot of SAVl in a distribution center in Queensland that services over 100 hospitals. After obtaining enough real-world data and experience to validate that the solution was as scalable and as accurate as needed, an Asia-Pacific rollout of the system commenced. SAVI is now live across Johnson & Johnson MedTech’s operations in Australia, New Zealand, and Japan, garnering recognition with a JAISA excellence award.

Google Cloud machine learning is integral to SAVI. Google Cloud’s technologies were a big differentiator for Max Kelsen’s engineering team in delivering the breakthroughs needed at scale, and in production, to meet Johnson & Johnson MedTech’s needs.

Reducing checking and documentation time

Running SAVI in Google Cloud has reduced the time Johnson & Johnson MedTech needs to check and document inspections of these surgical instrument sets by over 40%. The application also delivers consistent measurable quality that is often hard to measure at scale when using manual processes. During the pandemic, the application enabled Johnson & Johnson MedTech to operate with a lower headcount for the same volume output, enabling the organization to quickly service a backlog of waiting list surgeries.

In addition, the automation delivered with SAVI has reduced the time required to bring technicians up to speed on quality control processes, from eight to 12 months down to just three months, enhancing productivity and performance while delivering a more robust workforce.

So how does SAVI work in a real-world context? SAVI is deployed via a tablet and a web-based application incorporates an API to photograph the medical device trays, as shown below. Max Kelsen captures the photograph and sends it to a range of different services, via an API endpoint hosted on Google Cloud:

  • Image information is stored in Cloud Storage
  • Data relating to the trays is stored in Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL
  • APIs and web UI components run in CloudRun
  • Analytics data is stored within BigQuery

Once this tray and device onboarding stage is completed, the next step is to perform inferences from the images and data. By hosting online models with Kubeflow model serving on GKE, we enable a model to identify all the instruments in a tray at low latency.

Vertex AI Workbench notebooks are used for data exploration and modeling. Kubeflow training pipelines hosted on GKE are executed to produce machine learning models for specific surgical instrument sets. Several hundred machine learning models are then hosted with Kubeflow model serving on GKE, with state and analytics managed using Firebase. Using machine learning to infer from images whether any devices are incorrectly placed, dirty, or otherwise not fit for purpose, the data is then returned to the tablet for the user to respond accordingly.

Based on our success to date with SAVI, it is now available on Google Cloud Marketplace to help healthcare organizations achieve machine learning-powered efficiencies across a range of use cases, and ultimately improve patient safety and outcomes.

At Google Cloud, we continue to invest in key technologies to progress towards our true north star on invisible security: making strong security pervasive and simple for everyone. Our investments are based on insights from our world-class threat intelligence teams and experience helping customers respond to the most sophisticated cyberattacks. Customers can tap into these capabilities to gain perspective and visibility on the most dangerous threat actors that no one else has. 

Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI), particularly large language models (LLMs), accelerate our ability to help the people who are responsible for keeping their organizations safe. These new models not only give people a more natural and creative way to understand and manage security, they give people access to AI-powered expertise to go beyond what they could do alone. 

At the RSA Conference 2023, we are excited to announce Google Cloud Security AI Workbench, an industry-first extensible platform powered by a specialized, security LLM, Sec-PaLM. This new security model is fine-tuned for security use cases, incorporating our unsurpassed security intelligence such as Google’s visibility into the threat landscape and Mandiant’s frontline intelligence on vulnerabilities, malware, threat indicators, and behavioral threat actor profiles. 

Google Cloud Security AI Workbench powers new offerings that can now uniquely address three top security challenges: threat overload, toilsome tools, and the talent gap. It will also feature partner plug-in integrations to bring threat intelligence, workflow, and other critical security functionality to customers, with Accenture being the first partner to utilize Security AI Workbench. 

The platform will also let customers make their private data available to the platform at inference time; ensuring we honor all our data privacy commitments to customers. Because Security AI Workbench is built on Google Cloud’s Vertex AI infrastructure, customers control their data with enterprise-grade capabilities such as data isolation, data protection, sovereignty, and compliance support. 

Preventing threats from spreading beyond the first infection

We already provide best-in-class capabilities to help organizations immediately respond to threats. But what if we could not just identify and contain initial infections, but also help prevent them from happening anywhere else? With our AI advances, we can now combine world class threat intelligence with point-in-time incident analysis and novel AI-based detections and analytics to help prevent new infections. These advances are critical to help counter a potential surge in adversarial attacks that use machine learning and generative AI systems. That’s why we’re excited to introduce:  

  • VirusTotal Code Insight uses Sec-PaLM to help analyze and explain the behavior of potentially malicious scripts, and will be able to better detect which scripts are actually threats. 
  • Mandiant Breach Analytics for Chronicle leverages Google Cloud and Mandiant Threat Intelligence to automatically alert you to active breaches in your environment. It will use Sec-PaLM to help contextualize and respond instantly to these critical findings.

These new updates build on the existing AI in Google’s industry-leading solutions. For example, Chronicle Security Operations already uses frontline intelligence, integrated reasoning, and machine learning to identify initial infections, prioritize impact, and contain threats. Another example is reCAPTCHA Enterprise, which uses image noising capabilities to help protect your site from adversaries that leverage novel AI advances, greatly enhancing our defenses against bots. 

Adding intelligence to reduce toil

At Google Cloud, we help organizations modernize security wherever they are, in part by simplifying their security tools and controls whenever possible. Advances in generative AI can help reduce the number of tools organizations need to secure their vast attack surface areas and ultimately, empower systems to secure themselves. This will minimize the toil it takes to manage multiple environments, to generate security design and capabilities, and to generate security controls. Today, we’re announcing: 

  • Assured OSS will use LLMs to help us add even more open-source software (OSS) packages to our OSS vulnerability management solution, which offers the same curated and vulnerability-tested packages that we use at Google.
  • Mandiant Threat Intelligence AI, built on top of Mandiant’s massive threat graph, will leverage Sec-PaLM to quickly find, summarize, and act on threats relevant to your organization. 

These announcements build on existing capabilities that help customers centralize visibility and control, detect targets, and improve security across their platform. For example, Security Command Center (SCC) uses always-on machine learning to detect malicious scripts executing in the customer container environment and immediately alert the customer. In addition, Cloud Data Loss Prevention leverages machine learning to find and classify data, and with Confidential Computing you can collaborate on, train, and deploy sensitive and regulated AI models in the cloud, all while preserving confidentiality. 

Evolving how practitioners do security to close the talent gap 

At Google, we believe that to truly democratize security, we need to first acknowledge that AI will soon usher in a new era for security expertise that will profoundly impact how practitioners “do” security. Most people who are responsible for security — developers, system administrators, SRE, even junior analysts — are not security specialists by training. 

Imagine a world where novices and security experts are paired with AI expertise to free themselves from repetition and burnout, and accomplish tasks that seem impossible to us today. To help power this evolution, we’re embedding Sec-PaLM-based features that can make security more understandable while helping to improve effectiveness with exciting new capabilities in two of our solutions: 

  • Chronicle AI: Chronicle customers will be able to search billions of security events and interact conversationally with the results, ask follow-up questions, and quickly generate detections, all without learning a new syntax or schema.
  • Security Command Center AI: Security Command Center will translate complex attack graphs to human-readable explanations of attack exposure, including impacted assets and recommended mitigations. It will also provide AI-powered risk summaries for security, compliance, and privacy findings for Google Cloud.

These new releases bolster our existing efforts to tackle these issues through capabilities like IAM Recommender, which suggests permissions better suited to actual usage patterns. We will soon be augmenting this capability to cover organizational policies, further enabling the administrator to help improve the security posture of their organization. In addition, Mandiant Automated Defense applies machine learning to help reduce the repetitive Tier 1 alert triage problem and address alert fatigue. 

Offering availability 

VirusTotal Code Insight, available now in Preview, is our first example of putting Security AI Workbench to work for our customers. We will be rolling out other offerings to trusted testers in coming months, and they will be available in Preview more broadly this summer. Click here for the demo

Security AI Workbench, including Sec-PaLM and partner integrations, in addition to the product innovations described in our demo, are all building blocks for a larger effort to elevate security across the ecosystem. So far, that effort: 

  • Provides assistive functions to rapidly develop IT generalist talent to Tier 1 security operator status in a way that wasn’t previously feasible. Security Command Center now can summarize threat intelligence insights and findings for Google Cloud, and Chronicle can quickly generate YARA-L rules or other detections. 
  • Provides advanced functions such as iterative query and multivariate detection generation, conversational filtering and interaction with results, and smart case awareness to empower advanced Tier 2 and 3 security operators to focus on threat analysis instead of struggling with process and toil. Mandiant Threat Intelligence users now can elevate their core competencies to hunt, investigate, and remediate threats — using the same tools our own Mandiant experts use. 
  • Fuses threat intelligence and AI-based analytic capabilities, which are unsurpassed in the market. VirusTotal Code Insight enables security teams to help gain insights and identify threats in suspicious code. This can significantly enhance their ability to detect and mitigate potential attacks.

However, this is just an initial step. We’ll continue to iterate and innovate, and we encourage customers and partners to leverage Security AI Workbench in new and exciting ways. Moving forward, we anticipate many new use cases to emerge over time. 

Building a safer future

While generative AI has recently captured the imagination, Sec-PaLM is based on years of foundational AI research by Google and DeepMind, and the deep expertise of our security teams. This work includes new efforts to expand our partner ecosystem to provide businesses with security capabilities at every layer of the cybersecurity stack. We have only just begun to realize the power of applying generative AI to security, and we look forward to continuing to leverage this expertise for our customers and drive advancements across the security community.

AI-led transformation across industries is the trend these days. But to bring AI to life, experts are breaking it down into three critical areas. Learn what they are and how you can adopt them in your organization.

Business leaders see much in Artificial Intelligence, including new ways to save money, serve customers, and figure out what to build. What’s often tougher is deciding how to engage. That’s understandable, since getting into AI often raises questions about costs, data integrity, project length, and similar issues of planning and execution.

For CIOs concerned with the deployment and use of IT at their companies, these are critical issues. Here is one way to think about this complexity, by breaking it down into three different areas; Early Automation, Learning and working, and System Views.

First, a bit of good news and myth dispelling for readers who think AI is some far off promise, still in the labs and not safe for work. The reality is that AI is very much here, and almost everyone in your workplace is using it every day. People work with AI when they use Google Search, Photos, the autocomplete feature in Docs, live translation in Pixel phones, and many other areas. It is in the products of many other companies too.

Additionally, it’s increasingly clear that AI can be adapted as a virtuous process, not just a one-off purchase (though there is much to recommend that.) During a recent Alphabet earnings call, CEO Sundar Pichai noted that “investments in AI will be key” to its near-term strategy, with new techniques that make it faster and easier to train and build AI for a number of uses. Additionally, the company is offering AI-driven “insights, new tools, and automation” to its advertising clients. The striking thing in this was the way that developing AI in one area could lead to growth in many others.

So, how does an IT leader foster a growth process like this for their stakeholders? By leading people through the well-established stages of Awareness, Learning, and Extension. Here’s what I mean.

Awareness: Early Automation


Consumer-facing AI is particularly strong in communications functions like voice recognition, translation, and writing tips. It’s similar in business uses: One of the most effective early instances of AI in the workplace has been Contact Center AI (CCAI), which manages basic customer communications, automatically answering common questions and prioritizing calls that require human assistance. It is doing what automation has always done best, automating the rote stuff and leaving the higher-value imaginative activity to people. It has been used by governments, retailers, telecommunications companies, and others, in a wide variety of use cases.

These and similar language-centric products, like DocAI for extracting information from things like invoices, receipts, or AI that extracts information from business contracts, have a number of benefits. For one, the investment is relatively easy to control, unlike with a research project leading to a formal launch. The payoff is also clearer. In the case of contact centers, in particular, the automation relieves stress, wins loyalty and slows disaffection in a high-turnover area. In both cases, successful results build allies in the business, who can testify to the earlier benefits when it’s time to take on something more complex.

Perhaps best of all, creating interest in basic AI services for business, right now, means people become engaged in learning more, since they see the early benefits and wonder what else might be done.

Learning: The Human Factor


The Natural Language Processing (NLP) that goes into these ready made, “out of the box” AI products can, not surprisingly, be used on much more sophisticated levels. Twitter, for example, processes 400 billion different events in real time, and its staff queries this trove using advanced NLP, answering questions and improving customer experiences.

There is clearly an enormous gap between Call Center AI and processing Twitter’s 400 billion events per day, but it’s not noticed enough how quickly that gap is closing. Look at how many products, partners, and training resources have emerged in the past few years. The gap makes sense, insofar as both the means of AI (like large data sets, good algorithms, and sufficient computing) and the value of AI, are new.

Increasingly, as AI is incorporated into standard enterprise tools like spreadsheets and analytic tools, easier to use AI becomes a skill within reach for many (even as the advanced end becomes more complex, meaning this ease of use process will continue for some time.)

It’s so new that AI skills demand isn’t met by conventional education means, creating lots of good opportunities for both nonstandard skills training, and in-house learning in the workforce. Companies offering AI skills training could well gain a competitive advantage and retain staff better.

Extension: Building System Views


When a new technology lands and gains in popularity, people seek to find new uses for it, or build connections among its different uses. Networked computing is one example, but think also of the way cars were soon followed by trucks and fire engines, or the way the data services on wireless phones soon morphed into the App Economy. If something is useful, people look for ways to grow it.

How will AI grow? My colleague Dominik Wee recently wrote about ways that AI will soon change supply chains, change product design, and improve sustainability. Most interestingly, he talked about how customers in manufacturing were realizing savings and gaining insights when once separate quality control data was combined with system wide views of the quality process.

There are several reasons to think AI will promote many such system views. For one thing, successful AI promotes the collection of data from more places, at greater frequency, since that leads to insight (and the cost of data collection is dropping.) Additionally, AI is good at spotting patterns and interactions that are not currently known. As well, AI is used in prediction and scenario planning, which leads to better understanding of how large-scale systems interact.

This comes at a time when we have more ways of seeing the world, from satellites, sensors, social media, and much more. We have more awareness of interactions, and a demand to understand them, in everything from the supply chain crisis, to human rights and sourcing regulations, or in the business realities of partnering, and serving customers in all sorts of ways, online and in the physical world.

Whether by coincidence or design, the Age of AI is also an age when organizations see themselves more accurately with a rich web of connections, with their choices and actions having more resonance than ever. That awareness is both a competitive tool, and a call to greater responsibility, potentially affording more customer loyalty and a more satisfied workforce for those who get it right.

That transformation won’t happen everywhere overnight, but it seems to be happening at all sorts of companies. And the trend for AI to assist, to be studied and grown, and to provide a richer understanding of the world, is happening every time someone touches this technology, at whatever level they need.
