Google Cloud’s 2021 Data Analytics Launches
Google Cloud announced closed to 15 services and programs spanning database, analytics, business intelligence and AI to help businesses gain value out of their data. Here’s a rundown of announcements throughout 2021 on analytics solutions and services such as Dataplex, an intelligent data fabric solution, Datastream, a serverless change data capture and replication service and Google Cloud analytics hub. By the end of 2024, 75% of enterprises will shift from piloting to operationalizing artificial intelligence according to IDC, yet the growing complexity of data types, heterogeneous data stacks and programming languages make this a challenge for all data engineers. With the current economic climate, doing more with cheaper costs and higher efficiency have also become a key consideration for many organizations.
Today, we are pleased to announce three major releases that bring the power of Google Cloud’s Dataflow to more developers for expanded use cases and higher data processing workloads, while keeping the costs low, as part of our goal to democratize the power of big data, real time streaming, and ML/AI for all developers, everywhere.
The three big Dataflow releases we’re thrilled to announce in general availability are:
Dataflow Prime – Dataflow Prime takes the serverless, no-operation benefits of Dataflow to a totally new level. Dataflow Prime allows users to take advantage of both horizontal autoscaling (more machines) and vertical autoscaling (larger machines with more memory) automatically for your streaming data processing workloads, with batch coming in the near future. With Dataflow Prime, pipelines are more efficient, enabling you to apply the insights in real time.
Dataflow Go – Dataflow Go provides native support for Go, a rapidly growing programming language thanks to its flexibility, ease of use and differentiated concepts, for both batch and streaming data processing workloads. With Apache Beam’s unique multi-language model, Dataflow Go pipelines can leverage the well adopted, best-in-class performance provided by the wide range of Java I/O connectors with ML transforms and I/O connectors from Python coming soon.
Dataflow ML – Speaking of ML transforms, Dataflow now has added out of the box support for running PyTorch and scikit-learn models directly within the pipeline. The new RunInference transform enables simplicity by allowing models to be used in production pipelines with very little code. These features are in addition to Dataflow’s existing ML capabilities such as GPU support and the pre and post processing system for ML training, either directly or via frameworks such as Tensorflow Extended (TFX).
We’re so excited to make Dataflow even better. With the world’s only truly unified batch and streaming data processing model provided by Apache Beam, the wide support for ML frameworks, and the unique cross-language capabilities of the Beam model, Dataflow is becoming ever easier, faster, and more accessible for all data processing needs.

Transforming Software Development Education with CourseMatix

As the world increasingly relies on software, businesses have struggled to find enough developer talent to build and maintain their applications. IDC estimates the global shortage of software developers reached 1.4 million in 2021 and expects that number to balloon to 4 million by 2025.
Higher education is a great starting point to solve the software development skills shortage. One institution — Spokane Community College — has made strides in enhancing student learning and serving more students with the right mix of software development and IT education while saving educators time.
Building a modern IT education platform
As a first step to improve computer science education and scale the number of students it could teach, Spokane Community College needed a platform that could help instructors more efficiently manage the teaching process. That’s where CourseMatix came in.
CourseMatix is an education platform that delivers the required tools, platforms, and frameworks such as automated grading, assignment tracking, and testing to save teachers time and enhance students’ learning.
CourseMatix is entirely made up of microservices, with significant compute demands because it creates and runs a unique dedicated environment for each student. The platform is complex by nature as it supports a range of technologies that computer science professors need to teach varying coursework. This led to issues with scalability, reliability, and uptime when running on legacy infrastructure.
“We really wanted to no longer manage our infrastructure, leaving us to focus entirely on our platform,” says Aleks Korn, chief executive officer of CourseMatix. “We engaged Google Cloud partner CDW to see how we could simplify and improve our IT environment. The decision was quickly made to migrate to Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE).”
GKE provides CourseMatix with automatic horizontal and vertical scaling to minimize costs and downtime, while removing management and maintenance requirements. This enables CourseMatix to expand the reach of its platform at the lowest possible price and maintain a lean team. CDW helped CourseMatix make this decision to migrate to GKE, managed the migration, and provided guidance on a storage solution.
Because CourseMatix has high data storage volume requirements (given the size of software development assignments) and needs to be fully reliable to ensure work is not lost, it also chose to work with NetApp. NetApp Cloud Volumes Service for Google Cloud perfectly complements GKE in its highly expandable, reliable, and user-friendly capabilities. The platform was now ready for its U.S. launch at Spokane Community College.
Transforming software development education
Spokane Community College needed a solution to address the challenges facing its professors, particularly with respect to time management.
“Each software development assignment can take an hour to grade,” says Bret Dickey, professor of software development at Spokane Community College. “When you have 100 students, you’re talking weeks of turnaround time to grade those projects. CourseMatix provides immediate feedback, which is a game changer for us as professors and our students.”
Students now complete and submit their assignments with real-world tools, using source control, creating branches to complete their work, and merging those branches to push up to the server where pipelines run the applications.
“It’s making our teaching better overall, including using real-world concepts to enhance teaching and outcomes,” says Dickey.
CourseMatix also provides the tooling to upskill on various programming languages and software packages required for coursework, helping Spokane Community College manage server-side frameworks and client-side languages that each have their own tools.
“Students can access their cloud-based coding environment and all the tools they may need for an assignment are ready to go,” says Karmen Blake, another software development professor at Spokane Community College. “Having a central system for tooling within CourseMatix has been a huge time saver, meaning more time for learning and practice that prepares students for careers as professional software developers.”
Karmen and Dickey have seen marked improvements in their ability to teach and in student learning by using CourseMatix. For example, the platform provides automated hints and varying error messages based on the number of attempts a student has made to solve a problem to help each student along without making the assignment too easy or too difficult.
As a cloud-based platform, CourseMatix also empowers students from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds to learn computer science.
“As long as students can access the internet on their laptops, they have everything to complete their assignments,” says Karmen. “The cloud-based CourseMatix offering improves efficiency and equity across all students in our computer science programs.”
With a more fluid experience for students and immense amounts of time saved on grading, Spokane Community College is in a better position to increase enrollment in software development classes.
“Now that we have automated our grading and optimized our assignment processes, I am beginning to take on more students and teach more classes,” says Dickey. “I could not have imagined this outcome only a couple of years ago, and it’s all possible thanks to CourseMatix.”

Data Cloud Skills to Pick Up in 2022: Google Experts Recommended

It’s 2022 and nanosatellites, NFTs, and autonomous cars that deliver your pizza are in full force. In a world where people rely on simple technology to untangle complex problems, companies must deliver simple experiences to be successful in today’s landscape. For many cloud providers this means enabling tightly integrated data offerings that simplify the data delivery process without losing sight of the sophisticated needs of the modern data consumer.
But while the name of the game is helping companies reach informed decisions from their data simpler and faster, what about the data practitioners – data analysts, data engineers, database administrators, developers, etc – who use these cloud data tools and technologies everyday? To proactively stay ahead of data cloud market trends in 2022 should data practitioners invest their time in specializing their data cloud skill sets (e.g. go deep in, say, data pipelining skills) or instead invest their time generalizing their data cloud skill sets (e.g. growing proficiencies in a mix of data analytics, databases, AI/ML, and more domains)?
Skill deep or wide with data – that is the question
For Abdul Razack, VP, Solutions Engineering, Technology Solutions and Strategy at Google Cloud, the answer is a bit of both.
“Data practitioners need to be broad in terms of their technology skills, but specialized with respect to the domain or domains in which they apply them. The reason why is because many things that used to be separate skill sets are now converging – like business analytics, streaming, machine learning, data pipelines, and data warehousing. Data practitioners need to be able to implement end-to-end workflows that solve specific business problems using skills from each category.”
It’s true, thousands of customers are choosing Google’s data cloud because it offers a unified and open approach to cloud that enables their practitioners to break down silos, begin and end projects without leaving the data platform, and innovate faster across their organization.
The data practitioners who mirror Google data cloud’s frame of mind of being smart and agile across data domains in their skilling and learning will reap the benefits of solving more nuanced problems – building out internet-scale applications, fine tuning smart processes with analytics and AI, constructing data meshes that make product building simple, etc – at a larger scale than they would if they specialized in just one or two areas alone.
“Of course at the end of the day it depends on what tools a data practitioner is using to complete their workflows. There’s only so much you can learn and skills you can develop when you’re using limited tools. Growing data proficiencies across the board is made a lot easier when you’re using a data platform like BigQuery to address all these needs. BigQuery eliminates the choices you have to make – for instance you don’t have to choose between streaming data and data at rest, batch and realtime, or business intelligence and data science. This freedom gives data professionals a huge advantage when they’re building their skill sets and taking on more complex projects.” -Abdul Razack – VP, Solutions Engineering, Technology Solutions and Strategy, Google Cloud
Knowing your value is half the battle when upskilling
While some experts think technology is the limiting factor of whether or not you can even go wide or go deep in the first place, others like Google Cloud’s Head of Data and Analytics Bruno Aziza purport that it also depends on who you are, who you wish to be, and what investments your company is making to ensure you can become that person.
“If you wish to set yourself up to be a Chief Data Officer, then you’ll want to understand how technologies fit together across your data estate first” said Aziza. “Only after you feel like you’re the go-to ‘data person’ can you then decide which part of the technology stack you want to double-down on.”
But technology isn’t everything. Aziza notes, “Make sure you focus on the business impact that your data work provides. You want to spend as much time as you can with your business counterparts to understand their business goals and challenges. The Harvard Business Review provides great guidance on how to succeed as a Chief Data Officer.”
Even if you don’t have your sights set on a C-suite role, both Aziza and Razack contend that the number one skill data practitioners should tackle in 2022 is actually a broad and perhaps abstract one: develop and exercise the curiosity to solve problems with a data-driven strategy.
That is, today’s data practitioners should always be interested in educating themselves in the industry and continually upskilling in something. And their employers should also be invested in helping practitioners develop those interests, most likely through exposure to learning materials, engaging in career conversations, subsidized courses, or incentives attached to pursuing a new certification or skill.
“Every industry is going through a digital transformation and the ability to identify what data to collect, how to prepare the data, and how to derive insights from it is critical. Therefore, the ability to find business challenges and formulate a data-driven approach to address those problems is the most important skill to have.” Abdul Razack – VP, Solutions Engineering, Technology Solutions and Strategy, Google Cloud.
Take the example of the “Data Mesh” I just wrote about in VentureBeat. You’ll find 3 types of attitudes towards this new concept. There are Disciples who encourage continued learning only from the source – like the author of a new book or the creator of a theory. There are Distractors who tell you that new skills, trends, and technologies are fake news. And there are Distorters like vendors who will sell you one easy fix solution. But it’s the data practitioner who needs to proceed with caution when interacting with all three types and forge their own path to discovering the truth when they’re learning and building skills. And for better or worse, this comes with trial and error, experimentation, and an eagerness to grow relative to where they began.”

We are thrilled that Gartner has positioned Google as a Leader for the second year in a row in the 2021 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for Cloud Database Management Systems (DBMS).

We believe the report evaluated Google’s unified capabilities across both transactional and analytical use cases, and showcases innovation progress in areas like data management consistency, high speed processing and ingestion, security, elasticity, advanced analytics, and more.
With the recent announcement of Dataplex, organizations can centrally manage, monitor, and govern their data across data lakes, data warehouses, and data marts with consistent controls. To gain a competitive advantage using data, organizations need a data platform that transcends transactional and analytical workloads and can be run with the highest level of reliability, availability and security. Cloud Spanner, our globally distributed relational database has redefined the scale, global consistency, and availability of Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) systems. Spanner processes over 1 billion requests per second at peak, and has been battle-tested with some of the most-demanding applications, including Google services such as Search, YouTube, Gmail, Maps, and Payments. And what’s unique about our core services Spanner and BigQuery, is that they leverage common infrastructure such as our highly durable distributed file system (Colossus), our large-scale cluster management system (Borg), and Jupiter, our high-performance networking infrastructure, enabling features such as federation between Spanner and BigQuery.
We remain focused on the integration of Google Trends, Maps, Search, Ads, and have increased industry domain expertise in areas such as retail, financial services, healthcare, and gaming. We’re continuing to develop industry white papers such as this one – How to develop Global Multiplayer Games using Cloud Spanner – and we’re proud of the work the team has done to create and share industry and horizontal architecture patterns built from industry leaders to serve as solution accelerators for customer use cases.
Innovation momentum continues with a unified and open data cloud
We continue to innovate across our data cloud portfolio, especially with the innovations we announced at Google Cloud NEXT’21. BigQuery Omni is now available for AWS and Azure, supporting cross-cloud analytics for customers. We’ve added additional capabilities for enterprise data management and governance with Dataplex, which recently went GA. We’ve made migrations to Cloud SQL easier and faster with the Database Migration Service. More than 85% of all migrations are underway in under an hour, with the majority of customers migrating their databases from other clouds. We are embracing openness with Spanner by adding a PostgreSQL interface, allowing enterprises to take advantage of Spanner’s unmatched global scale, 99.999% availability, and strong consistency using skills and tools from the popular PostgreSQL ecosystem. We are also automating data processing with Spark on Google Cloud, which enables developers to spend less time on infrastructure management and more time on data science, modeling, and delivering business value. Finally, we announced Google Earth Engine on Google Cloud, allowing customers to integrate Earth Engine with BigQuery, Google Cloud’s ML technologies, and the Google Maps Platform.
With these innovations, enterprises like PayPal, Deutsche Bank, and Equifax use Google Cloud to solve for their end-to-end data lifecycle use cases. Organizations like Telefonica use Google Cloud to deliver new customer experiences. Telefónica has transformed every aspect of how they store, share, and analyze data while doubling processing power and lowering costs.
We continue to support an open ecosystem of data partners including Informatica, Tableau, MongoDB, Neo4j, C3.ai, and Databricks, giving customers the flexibility of choice to build their data clouds without being locked into a single approach.
