I’m so excited to be part of Google Cloud. Data has been a longstanding part of my career and it is at the heart of business transformation. Many companies have mastered the ability to collect data and have mechanisms in place to draw on some of it to solve business problems.  But most data collected piles up and is never put to a useful purpose. Accessing it and mining it for helpful insights is practically impossible at many companies. It’s always stuck in hard to reach places, fragmented across departments and unavailable when you need it the most.

Why a data cloud is essential

Building a data cloud using Google Cloud’s technologies helps organizations accelerate business transformation by giving everyone access to the right information at the right time so that they can act more intelligently based on it.

Since I’ve joined Google, I’ve been not only inspired by the work that the team has done to build products with a user-first mindset, but our customers have been an inspiration to each of us in what’s possible. 

  • The Home Depot built a data cloud using Google Cloud technologies to help keep 50,000+ items stocked at over 2,000 locations. They’re making their 400,000+ associates smarter by giving them visibility into the things each customer needs, like item location within a local store. By leveraging BigQuery, their query performance dropped from hours and days to seconds and minutes. The Home Depot also uses Cloud SQLSpanner, and Bigtable for their operational use cases and AI to help locate goods using their mobile apps for in-store navigation. 
  • Major League Baseball (MLB) is reimagining the fan experience with their data cloud. To build engagement with today’s fans, drive engagement with future generations, and lay the groundwork for future innovation, MLB consolidated its infrastructure and migrated to Google Cloud’s AnthosGoogle Kubernetes Engine, Cloud SQL, and BigQuery. MLB tracks every moment of every game for an audience on seven continents with Cloud SQL,  this valuable data to drive deeper engagement with fans.
  • Vodafone is using their data cloud to offer their customers new, personalized products and services across multiple markets. By identifying more than 700 use cases to deliver new products and services, Vodafone can support fact-based decision-making, reduce costs, remove duplication of data sources, and simplify operations.  With Google Cloud,  Vodafone’s operating companies in multiple countries can access improved data analytics, intelligence, and machine-learning capabilities.

Starting with a simple mobile app; now scaling into an agricultural ecosystem

Bushel began its journey in 2017 as a small-scale platform for farmers that delivered grain contracts, cash bids, and receipts. As Bushel evolved into a comprehensive agricultural ecosystem, we realized we needed knowledgeable technology partners to help us rapidly scale while saving time and administrative costs. That’s why we started partnering with the Google for Startups Cloud Program to get support from Google and work with Google Cloud Managed Services partner, DoiT International to help support our use of GKE and create a multi-regional deployment as well as migrate our CUDs to new Compute Engine families and continue to optimize our footprint. We’ll also use DoiT’s Flexsave technology to reduce the management overhead of CUDs in the future.

In just one year, we expanded to over 1,200 live grain receiving locations and quickly grew our services portfolio with electronic signature capabilities, commodity balances, and web development. Because that relationship between farmer and agribusiness is so important, we provide more than 200 grain companies with white-labled digital experiences so each farmer sees their local grain facility they do business with on both desktop and mobile. To further our extension into the digital infrastructure of agriculture, we subsequently acquired GrainBridge and FarmLogs to help farmers handle specific jobs and tasks, and provide the needed insights to improve their business operations. Over 2,000 grain receiving locations across the United States and Canada now use Bushel products. We accomplished all this on Google Cloud.

We leverage the secure-by-design infrastructure to protect millions of financial transactions and keep sensitive customer data safe. Our data is processed and stored in Google’s secure data centers, which maintain adherence to a number of compliance frameworks. We utilize Google Kubernetes Engine extensively as it reduces operational overhead and offers auto scaling up to 15,000 nodes.

Database provisioning, storage capacity management, and other time-consuming tasks are automated with our Cloud SQL usage. Query Insights for Cloud SQL streamlines database observability and seamlessly integrates with existing apps and Google Cloud services such as GKE and BigQuery.

Empowering farmers and agribusinesses in North America

The Google Cloud Account Team had been instrumental in helping Bushel build an expansive agricultural platform that powers APIs, apps, websites, and digital solutions. Google’s startup experts are incredibly responsive, with deep technical knowledge that can’t be found elsewhere. Google Cloud also has provided us credits to explore new ways of analyzing the vast amounts of data we generate, verify, and transfer with solutions such as BigQuery and Pub/Sub.

With BigQuery, we can run analytics at scale with 26%–34% lower three-year TCO than cloud data warehouse alternatives. BigQuery delivers actionable insights on a highly secure and scalable platform, includes built-in machine learning capabilities, and integrates with Pub/Sub to ingest and stream analytic events via Dataflow.

With Bushel, farmers across North America are rapidly responding to sudden market changes by tracking grain prices in real time and instantly buying and selling crops. We see a future where this business information becomes insights – where a farmer can not just know where to sell their grain, but when to sell. The burden right now to engage with carbon markets is high, full of paper-based binders and verification forms. We see a world where farming practices recorded digitally can be permissioned along the supply chain for a better picture of how our food is grown.

In 2009, Dan Khasis needed to rent an apartment. His search had him driving around the greater New York City area in unfamiliar areas, scattershot-style, often ending up where he started. The frustrating experience led the serial entrepreneur to launch Route4Me, a smartphone navigation app to help consumers create driving routes optimized for multiple stops.

Soon, business users recognized Route4Me’s value and requested enhancements specifically for them. While route optimization apps for big businesses already existed, they were almost exclusively offline desktop programs that were expensive to purchase, deploy, and get trained on. Recognizing the opportunity, Route4Me developed an affordable route optimization solution across various devices, such as smartphones, smartwatches, and telematics devices. The software was tailored to logistics-intensive businesses such as last-mile delivery services and business units conducting field sales, field service, and field marketing functions.

As Route4Me grew its user base, it became clear that its infrastructure of rented, dedicated servers from various providers wasn’t sustainable. “The hardware costs seemed low, but there were many risks and hidden costs,” says Dan Khasis, Co-founder and CEO at Route4Me. For example, “Multi-zone disaster recovery, high availability, automated failover, and on-demand surging of many nodes was simply impossible,“ he adds.

Because under the hood Route4Me’s routing optimization platform requires complex computations, the company needed a globally scalable infrastructure capable of delivering low latency and high throughput. Route4Me also needed to stay competitive by developing and delivering new services as quickly and efficiently as possible.

For these and other reasons, Route4Me moved 100% into the cloud. “Like many entrepreneurial software companies, we test all the latest technologies we can find before upgrading. Typically we go with the fastest technology, with a strong bias towards open source and open standards,” Khasis says. Based on extensive testing, Route4Me selected Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Along with the scalability, flexibility, reliability, and low-cost structure of GCP, Route4Me had already migrated its entire platform to containerized microservices, which Khasis says “are extremely stable and reliable” on Google Kubernetes Engine. While Route4Me has proprietary routing and route optimization engines, it uses Google Maps for high-precision geocoding and as the frontend.

With GCP, Route4Me has reduced its IT infrastructure costs while delivering faster route optimizations and more reliable service to customers. Because of GCP, the company is also planning to add services that will deliver the fastest possible routing simulations and calculations to customers at a price that Khasis says is “impossible without a mature cloud-based platform like GCP.”

Unexpected savings, pleasant surprises

The migration to GCP and Kubernetes Engine required Route4Me to revamp its Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and convert millions of lines of code into containerized microservices running on Kubernetes Engine. With more than 150 microservices and thousands of add-on modules and features offered on the Route4Me platform, the migration took several months. But the transition, which began in May 2017 and concluded toward year’s end, went smoothly. “Thanks to the reliability and open source portability of Google Kubernetes Engine, Route4Me experienced one-tenth of the problems that we’ve had when onboarding to other cloud providers,” says Khasis.

Halfway into the migration, Route4Me engineers discovered an unexpected cost savings. The ability to run preemptible virtual machine (VM) instances with Kubernetes Engine resulted in a 90% savings in infrastructure costs, according to Khasis.

The engineering team was also pleasantly surprised by the improved intra-system latency and performance between the Google network and those of third-party systems and other data centers that Route4Me connects to. Overall latency dropped from 8x to 12x. “Where it used to take 8 to 14 seconds to plan a complicated route, now it takes as little as 2 seconds,” Khasis says. Route4Me is also running most of its transactional and operational data through Google BigQuery for a variety of business use cases, including complex machine learning tasks such as geospatial analytics, geospatial pattern detection, and synthetic density.

Scaling while delivering great performance

Route4Me algorithms take into account such data as driving distance, driving time, who’s driving, the day of the week, the vehicle being used, weather conditions, and dozens of other attributes. “All those scenarios and data have to be run in near real time,” Khasis explains. The Route4Me system must access multiple internal and external databases, aggregate all the information in parallel, and deliver it using a high-speed infrastructure platform.

“Our core services and algorithms work much faster on a Google architecture, bringing the total time to solve a complex route problem down to single-digit seconds.” “Many of those steps are resource-intensive,” Khasis adds. “With Kubernetes Engine clusters, we can do much more, scaling up and down as needed, and still deliver great performance to customers around the world.”

Because of its scale, Route4Me built its own automation system for marketing, support, and communications with its customers. “Since we moved our proprietary marketing automation system to GCP, we began delivering our omni-channel marketing communications more reliably, and the correct message reached customers faster and at just the right moment,” says Khasis. “That’s translated to happier customers and increased revenue.”

Customer satisfaction has increased, too, because Route4Me’s users experience far fewer slowdowns than before due to the reliability of GCP. The reliability also means the company spends less time worrying about certain clusters or servers going down for extended periods of time. “We have zero sysadmins, which was the Achilles heel of some of my previous startups,” says Khasis. “So we can focus on software development rather than infrastructure management.”

In order to scale as needed and develop new features, Khasis had expected the company would need to hire more SysAdmin, DevOps, and SecOps staff. “But once we migrated to the modern GCP environment, we didn’t have to make those hires. We saved a lot of money by not having to hire, train, and manage more people,” explains Khasis.

Flexible GCP pricing, in which customers only pay for what they use, has saved Route4Me money on its IT infrastructure. “Preemptible server pricing on GCP is so aggressive,” Khasis says. “If servers are automatically shut off for a certain time period, we don’t pay for them for that period. And if servers are on for a certain amount of time, we get an automatic 30% discount. We’re saving money on the platform with fixed and dynamic workloads.”

Per-second billing with GCP also helps Route4Me cut costs. “If it only takes 25 seconds to do something, we only pay for those 25 seconds,” Khasis says. For the same 25 seconds, other cloud providers might charge for 10 minutes usage or even an hour.”

Road map for the future

In the coming year, Route4Me plans to offer additional add-ons as part of its self-service marketplace, providing customers with transparent pricing on highly complex route optimizations. The service will be extremely valuable to heavy users. For instance, if an organization has to visit 50,000 locations by a certain time, it might wonder if it needs to add 20 people to make that happen and how much it’s going to cost. “Because we’re on GCP, our customer can run a variety of complicated routing scenarios to see which one is the most efficient in seconds instead of minutes,” says Khasis. “As far as I know, none of our competitors can offer that kind of service, giving us an edge as well as a new revenue stream.”

Going forward, Route4Me will begin migrating a huge portion of its core routing optimization platform to Google Google Cloud Spanner. “We want to take further advantage of Cloud Spanner, which comes closest to the CAP theorem and permits us to operate an infinitely scalable and nearly indestructible platform,” Khasis says.

As one example, Route4Me receives telematics data, such as GPS coordinates, from Internet of Things (IoT) devices in smartphones and vehicles, and performs complex algorithmic analysis running on Cloud Spanner. This provides real-time return on investment (ROI) information, so customers can see how much money they’re saving by using Route4Me routing optimization services.

“In order to help as many logistics-intensive businesses as possible, we intend to migrate our proprietary mapping, routing, and route optimization services to Cloud Spanner to take advantage of its extreme reliability and redundancy, and the multi-availability zones of Google Cloud Platform,” says Khasis.

Route4Me also plans to leverage Google machine learning technology, in part to make its routing solution available for use in autonomous and drone vehicles, as well as decentralized edge computing deployments. In addition, Google security and encryption technology will help the company expand its offerings to the heavily regulated medical industry.

Over 60 Route4Me team members use G Suite for almost everything. ”We’re interested in using everything possible with G Suite. We get inspiration from G Suite, too. A lot of thinking and effort went into improving G Suite, and we use that as inspiration to improve own products.”

With 700,000 passengers a day, the core business remains with railway operations, but in recent years the FNM Group has redefined itself as a mobility service provider rather than just a public transport operator, with transport solutions like car-sharing platforms in parts of the country disconnected from the main railway lines. As part of this evolution, in 2016, FNM Group initiated a new strategy to overhaul its technology and build a platform that could support its ambitious, new direction.

“We needed an IT system that could rapidly adapt to the new market requirements we are planning to address,” says Augusto de Castro, Director of Human Resources, Organization, and IT at FNM Group. “To achieve this goal, we decided to modernize our information system and move to a cloud-based infrastructure, so we started testing various solutions. For us, the best came from Google.”

Collaborative office productivity

Since 2005, the FNM Group had used SAP Business Suite for its platform, using on-premises servers to manage its technology and database solutions. By 2016, when the group expanded its horizons, the on-premises infrastructure was showing its age and limitations. In addition, FNM Group office productivity tools limited workers’ mobility and flexibility. The company decided that a cloud-based solution was the most economical and effective infrastructure for its new innovation-focused strategy, but also wanted to continue the high-quality service it received from SAP.

In April 2017, FNM Group teamed up with Innext, a leading Italian consultancy and Google Cloud Premier Partner, to help transition to the cloud. After taking the time to assess specific needs at FNM Group, Innext supported the company’s decision to start the project with a migration to G Suite, replacing the existing email and office productivity platform. With help from Innext, FNM Group provided its workers with new tools such as Gmail, cloud-based storage on Google Drive, and fast, effective collaboration with Google Hangouts. As well as technical help, Innext brought a whole change management program designed to help FMN workers take full advantage of the new platform. “One of our top goals in any project is the adoption of the G Suite platform,” says Andrea Servili, Co-founder and Partner at Innext.

Cloud-based enterprise solutions with SAP HANA and SAP S/4HANA

While defining the G Suite migration, Innext and FNM Group began looking for an infrastructure solution. The timing was perfect. Earlier in the year, Google announced that SAP HANA and SAP S/4HANA, the latest software from SAP, would be able to run on Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Running on Google Compute Engine instances, Google Cloud Storage for backups, and Google Virtual Private Cloud as a networking solution, FNM Group can continue to use the enterprise platform of its choice along with all the advantages of Google cloud technology. By July, 2018, FNM Group plans to have fully migrated to SAP HANA and SAP S/4HANA on GCP and have its 1,200 employees using G Suite.

Building a platform to last

With Innext and SAP HANA and SAP S/4HANA on GCP, FNM Group is building an enterprise infrastructure that can handle the demands of its traditional public transport operations and adapt to the company’s more innovative activities, such as car-sharing or energy management. By the time the migration is complete in 2018, FNM Group will save on infrastructure costs by only paying for the resources it uses with flexible pricing from Google. G Suite lets the company’s workers stay mobile and effective, and with Google Compute Engine, FNM Group can easily scale its infrastructure up or down to meet whatever challenges it faces in the future. Meanwhile, Google Cloud Storage helps ensure that FNM Group will have a highly secure, reliable backup solution. Once the migration is complete, FNM Group can start exploring other ways in which Google can help its business, especially with data analytic products like Google BigQuery or Google Cloud AI machine learning tools. Whatever the challenge, FNM Group knows that it can rely on Innext and Google to provide the right solution.
