As Google Cloud has become a choice for more startups, I’ve experienced an increase in founders asking how they should think about cloud services. Though each startup is different and requirements may vary across industries and regions, I’ve seen a few core best practices that help startups to succeed—as well as several traps to avoid.
For example, If you go with a public cloud provider, you’re ideally not starting from ground zero like you would running your own data center, but it’s important not to introduce similar complexity in a virtualized environment. Just because you’re using public cloud infrastructure doesn’t mean you want to manage it.
Instead, you want to leverage platforms that abstract away complexity so your team can focus on delivering value to customers. That’s where serverless comes in. Serverless platforms are fully managed by the provider, offering automatic scaling for workloads, as well as provisioning, configuring, patching, and management of servers and clusters. Freed from these resource-intensive tasks, your technical talent can focus on the things that differentiate your business, not on IT curation.
This applies to not only running stateless applications, but also managing and analyzing data. You should be collecting data points about which features are most popular on your platform, what people are buying, the types of activities that help your customers get their jobs done, and so on. This information is essential to building and executing on a product roadmap that will serve your customers. However, it’s not enough to collect this data, you need to make your data accessible, secure, and easy for your team to analyze—so where do you run and host it?
On Google Cloud, this is where options like Spanner and Cloud SQL can play a large role, as can BigQuery for analysis. You won’t have to worry about standing up infrastructure or patching servers—you can just stream your data to our data management platforms, where it’s available whenever someone needs to run a query. By leveraging a serverless architecture, your startup can be data-driven without having to invest in the traditional complexity of database administration and management—and that can significantly change your playing field.

When you think about climate change, you might not consider a daily commute to work or a drive around town as big contributing factors. And yet, transport is the fastest growing source of CO2 emissions from fossil fuel, which in turn is the largest contributor to climate change. This is the key insight behind the mission of Spanish carbon-neutral multinational Acciona. The group, which provides sustainable solutions for infrastructure and renewable energy projects across 65 countries, launched an electric scooter sharing service called Acciona Mobility in 2018.
Aiming to contribute to the decarbonization of the transport sector while helping relieve traffic congestion within cities, Acciona Mobility enables users to rent electric scooters powered 100% by energy from renewable sources. Users can find, reserve, and rent the scooters at the tap of their mobile screens via the Acciona Mobility application and pay on the basis of minutes spent riding. The app, which is available free to download online, is also the gateway through which new users can register for the service, which welcomes anyone with a valid driver’s license for motorbikes. After having their right to drive, identity, and card details validated, citizens can start enjoying the service, available 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

“Acciona Mobility is exciting because it stems from our vision to make people’s lives easier in a sustainable way,” says Jose Luis Rosell, CIO of Acciona’s Services Division. “40% of the pollution near cities comes from private transportation. We want to help solve that problem with zero-carbon, electric, multimodal transportation that’s also convenient for people to use.”
However, Jose Luis says that building the appropriate IT infrastructure to bring the new service to life required external support. “We needed to deploy a reliable infrastructure for a new service before understanding exactly what its scale and demand would be. Our strategy was to adopt a serverless architecture that can grow with us to sustain our long-term vision,” he explains. “This kind of thinking led us directly to Google Cloud.”
Developing the transportation platform of the future
Because Acciona was already a Google Cloud customer, Jose Luis and his team reached the decision to develop the new service on Google Cloud with ease, as he explains: “We had a very positive experience working closely with the Google Cloud team during Acciona’s first project on Google Cloud, and that collaborative mentality is very important for us. We feel Google Cloud is a trustworthy partner that is willing to take risks with us and is flexible enough to lead us through business uncertainty with the right technology,” he says. “So we were confident that its technology and people could help us bring the Acciona Mobility service from theory to reality.”
This time, Acciona partnered with cloud consultancy Altostratus as well, to consult on a selection of Google Cloud products that would help develop the application quickly by making use of managed services. Acciona’s strategy was to launch the new services first in Madrid, where the company is headquartered, and then spread the vision across more cities later, if the idea worked out well in practice. Due to the scale of the project and its data needs, BigQuery was chosen as the primary data warehouse to store all the information related to the service, such as the location of scooters and their availability status. With all its data readily available on BigQuery, Acciona is able to run specific queries that help it to gain insights such as which urban areas have the highest volume of scooters being rented. Knowing this, Acciona can reorganize availability to make sure there are always enough scooters in that specific location.
Integrating it with Pub/Sub and Dataflow, Acciona ensures that the data generated by scooters is ingested and processed in real time so that users searching for scooters nearby, using the Acciona Mobility application on their phones, can always have up-to-date information at hand. Using Google Maps Platform APIs such as the Directions API, Acciona’s mobile app translates the geographical coordinates of scooters into an easy-to-read address displayed beside a visual map. Using Cloud SQL, Acciona automates the storage capacity management of the database as the number of scooters and active users grow.
Meanwhile, Google Cloud Armor protects the service against cyber breaches and distributed denial of service attacks to keep it running uninterrupted. In addition, Google Cloud itself helps to reinforce the cyber security measures with secure-by-default managed services, such as data encryption. “The managed services mean more resilience and more uptime, because we don’t need to worry about maintenance or external threats,“ says Jose Luis of the solutions protecting all information generated by the new service, which as CIO is a topic he holds dearly. “I face cybersecurity issues more confidently as a Google Cloud partner,” he adds.

Expanding an 100% sustainable transport solution throughout Spain
Within two months of the decision to deploy Acciona Mobility on Google Cloud, the service was ready for launch, filling the streets of Madrid with 500 electric scooters that run 100% on renewable energy. By 2020, the number of scooters has grown to 10,000 and the service has scaled to multiple cities in and outside of Spain, including Lisbon, Milan, and Rome. To date, more than 3.5 million intracity rides have used the Acciona Mobility app, reducing CO2 emissions by more than 1,000 tons.

Set to continue expanding, Acciona is using Google Kubernetes Engine to make sure the Acciona Mobility application has the computing capacity it needs to continue scaling to reach new markets and serve more users. On that note, Google operations tools (formerly Stackdriver) are also being deployed to help monitor, troubleshoot, and improve the performance of the application as it scales.

Gaming company Bandai Namco Entertainment needed fast scalability, a global network, and real-time analytics to serve users its Dragon Ball Legends game. They were initially considering sharded MySQL to handle the scale, but opted for Cloud Spanner. Because it’s strongly consistent, fully managed, and scales seamlessly, Cloud Spanner supported the game’s rollout and allowed millions of worldwide players to compete without downtime.
And media leader The New York Times found our Cloud Firestore database service as they built a truly real-time collaboration tool that lets multiple writers and editors make changes in docs at the same time, keeping track of what’s newest. Cloud Firestore is designed for just this type of task, since it supports offline and real-time sync.
E-commerce brand analytics and protection company 3PM Solutions empowers global brands to manage, protect, and grow revenue by using Google Cloud Platform services such as Cloud Bigtable. Using Google Cloud, they’ve been able to analyze 160 million customer reviews of more than 2 million sellers in less than four hours.
Leanplum built its cloud-native marketing platform on Google Cloud to help marketers personalize and orchestrate cross-channel customer engagement campaigns at scale. “

Thirteen years’ experience in e-commerce has given Teddy Chan, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Technology Officer, AfterShip, a deep understanding of the challenges of shipping and tracking packages to customers worldwide.
“The key problem many merchants face is customers asking ‘where is my order?’ and ‘when I will get the package?’” Chan says. “When I considered this issue, I came up with the idea of AfterShip.” Chan helped found AfterShip in 2011 to enable merchants to keep track of packages sent to customers via a web portal or an API. AfterShip also allows merchants to notify customers of anticipated delivery times.
“Using AfterShip, merchants can provide the same experience to buyers regardless of which couriers they use,” Chan says. “Merchants can also improve their customer engagement by including up-selling or marketing content with their delivery notifications.”
Hong Kong-headquartered AfterShip continues to grow quickly and now has a 40-person team. Thirty members of this team are based on the China special administrative region and 10 are based in India.

By October 2017, the business was tracking about 30 million packages per month and had expanded its services to include label and rate calculation and self-service return. Revenue, package transaction numbers and team size have doubled every year for the past three years, while more than 300,000 merchants and 426 couriers are signed up to the service. Key customers include Wish, Etsy and Groupon.
Close to half AfterShip’s customers are based in the United States, about one third in Europe and the remainder are located in Asia. AfterShip had initially delivered its applications and services from an incumbent public cloud service. However, the company wanted to continue its growth trajectory while automating key infrastructure processes, implementing a continuous deployment model and controlling costs.
The business needed to achieve these objectives while maintaining a global presence and high-quality service. AfterShip started reviewing its options and decided to migrate to Google Cloud Platform (GCP). “Google Cloud Platform has a network of global datacentres with deep connectivity that enables us to place our infrastructure close to our customers,” Chan says.
“In addition, the ability to horizontally scale our global database using tools such as Google Cloud Spanner eliminates any limits to our geographic expansion. Furthermore, the managed services provided through GCP would allow us to focus on building better features for online merchants.” The reliability provided by GCP would also enable AfterShip to meet the stringent service level requirements of large digital marketplaces in the United States, Asia and elsewhere.
“Google Cloud Platform could manage the high volumes and enable us to deliver the service levels that would realise our ambition of becoming the number one tracking API platform in the world,” Chan says. “For example, with Google Cloud Platform, we can provide a 99.95% monthly uptime service level to our customers.” Finally, GCP provided managed solutions, including Google Kubernetes Engine powered by open source container orchestrator Kubernetes, that would enable AfterShip to automate processes such as scaling and enable its team to focus on developing applications.
AfterShip has moved its websites into GCP infrastructure in three datacentres around the world and anticipates completing the migration in Q4 2017. “Google provided a lot of assistance, particularly early in the project when we needed it,” Chan says. “They briefed us on several services we hadn’t known about that could replace the equivalents in the public cloud we were using previously.” The business then completed the migration using its own skilled team members. As well as Google Kubernetes Engine and Google Cloud Spanner, AfterShip is using Google BigQuery to store and analyse transaction information.

Deployment times down from one hour to two minutes
With deployment times falling from up to one hour in its previous cloud environment to about two minutes in GCP, AfterShip has been able to adopt a continuous deployment model. “This has improved our service levels,” Chan says. “If there are any issues we can fix them quickly, while we can iterate faster to create new features in response to customer requests or changes in the market. “This enables us to continue to lead our competitors.”
Targeting a 30 percent reduction in costs
AfterShip is now targeting a 30% reduction in costs by optimising its use of Docker containerisation technology on GCP.
“By using Docker with Kubernetes, we have been able to fine-tune our use of compute resources and better control our costs,” Chan says. “We’re extremely pleased with Google Cloud Platform as it really is built for engineers,” he adds. “In addition, its documentation is extremely clear, allowing us to troubleshoot or carry out activities on the platform ourselves. “We look forward to continuing to grow and extend our package tracking and associated services with Google Cloud Platform.”

How L&T Financial Services Processes 95% of Motorcycle Loans in Less Than Two Minutes
L&T Financial Services is one of the largest lenders in India. India’s demonetization policy in recent years has led to a shift from cash transactions to digital payments. In 2016, the government withdrew 500 and 1000 rupee notes from circulation and encouraged a heavily cash-based population to deposit their canceled notes in banks. L&T Financial Services engaged Google Cloud Professional Services to guide its digital transformation journey. The smooth migration from proof of concept to full-scale deployment on Google Cloud took a matter of months.

Digitizing the workforce with G Suite
The move to the cloud at L&T Financial Services started in 2017 when the company introduced G Suite to its 14,500 employees. The legacy email system was cumbersome to use, especially for frontline staff who need email access while they are on the road. Using Gmail, employees can connect with customers and co-workers from anywhere, on any device. Employees save time by scheduling meetings with Calendar, collaborating on Docs, and conducting video calls using Hangouts Meet.
Converting data into credit insights using BigQuery
Taking data intelligence one step further, L&T Financial Services adopts a responsible lending approach by applying algorithm-based data analytics to improve credit standards. Beyond traditional data such as credit score and credit payment history, the company also considers macro-economic indicators for risk audits. For example, a farmer’s ability to pay off the loan of his new tractor depends on a successful planting and harvest. So L&T Financial Services feeds long-term data into BigQuery and runs queries to predict loan defaults based on rainfall and crop yield.

Arvind Ltd has been in the apparel industry for more than 90 years, with its retail powerhouse Arvind Fashions Ltd being the backbone of well-known names in the retail fashion industry in India.
Arvind Fashions Ltd (Arvind) has seen significant growth in its portfolio with new franchises being added every year. The six high conviction brands include Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, Sephora, Arrow, U.S. Polo Assn. & Flying Machine.
To secure a foundation for future growth, the company has embarked on a digital transformation (DX) journey, focusing on profitability and improving the customer experience. The key objectives for Arvind’s DX is to unlock the value of existing applications, gain new insights, and build a solid workflow with resilient systems.
Getting Google Cloud to address the challenges around insights & analytics was a natural step forward, since Arvind had already formed a relationship with Google Cloud, starting with its productivity and collaboration tools during the pandemic.
Key Challenges
Arvind’s enterprise applications estate is a mix of SAP, Oracle POS, logistics management systems and other applications. Having so many different applications made it a challenge for the company to bring all of this data together to drive retail insights and at the same time maintain the freshness of its products.
As a case in point, the existing sales reporting and inventory reconciliation process had been enabled by a mix of automated and semi-automated desktop applications. There were challenges to scale the infrastructure in order to process large amounts of data at a low latency.
The synchronization of master data across functions was critical to build the data platform that provides consistent insights to multiple stakeholders across the organization.
Solution Approach – Modern Data Platform
There are several ways to solve the challenges above and do more by building a modern data analytics platform. For example, using a data lake based approach that builds use case by use case, hybrid data estates and so on. Regardless of the approach, it is important to define the solution based on certain principles.
In Arvind’s scenario, the key business principles considered are that data platforms should support Variety, Variability, Velocity and Volume. Each of these 4 V’s are critical business pivots to successful fashion retailing. Variety in SKU’s to deal with myriad fashion trends every season, Variability in shopping footfalls due to different festivities, weekends and special occasions, Velocity to be agile and responsive to customer needs, and Volumes of data that bring richer insights.
This is where Google BigQuery enabled data platform comes in, as it is able to meet the needs above.

Solution Architecture – Current Capabilities & Future Vision
BigQuery is the mothership of the data and analytics platform on Google Cloud. Its serverless construct ensures that data engineering teams focus only on insights & analytics. Storage and compute is decoupled and can be independently scaled. BigQuery has been leveraged to service both the raw as well as the curated data zones.
With BigQuery procedures, it is possible to process the data natively within the data warehouse itself. Procedures have been leveraged to process the data in a low latency manner with the familiar SQL.
But then what happens to advanced analytics and insights? With simplicity being our key guiding principle, BigQuery machine learning ensures that data analysts can create, train and deploy analytics models even with complex requirements. It can also consume data from Looker Studio, which is seamlessly integrated with BigQuery.
Here are the key principles and highlights of the data platform that have been achieved:
- Simple, yet exhaustive – We needed a solution with vast technical capabilities such as data lake & data warehouse, data processing, data consumption, analytics amongst others. And at the same time it needed to be simple to implement and run ongoing operations.
- Agility – High quality analytics use cases typically require a significant amount of time, effort and skill set. While building a simple solution we ensured that the selection of technology services ensured agility in the long term.
- Security – An organization can be truly successful if the insights and analytics operations are democratized. But while data is made available to a wider community, we need to ensure data governance and security.
- Ease of operations – Data engineering teams spend a lot of time doing infrastructure setting and management operations. With BigQuery, teams can put in more effort on building the data pipelines and models to feed into analytics instead of worrying about the infrastructure operations.
- Costs – Decoupling storage and compute allows for flexible pricing. A pay-as-you-go model is the ideal solution to managing costs.
Business Impact
The ingestion frequency of the store level inventory (~800 stores) has now been changed to daily. With the additional data volumes and processing the scaling on BigQuery has been seamless. There are new processes and dashboards to address the reconciliation and root cause analysis. Operational efficiencies have improved leading to better productivity and turn around time of critical processes.
The discrepancies in various reconciliation activities have drastically reduced by an order of magnitude of 300X due to the capabilities offered by the data platform. Not only is it possible to identify discrepancies but the data platform has also enabled in identifying the root causes for the same as well.
Arvind Fashions Ltd have also been able to enhance some of the existing business processes and systems with insight from the data platform.
It’s going to be an exciting journey for Arvind Fashions Ltd and Google Cloud. There are several initiatives ready for kick off such as getting more apps on the edge devices, warehouse analytics, advanced customer data platforms, predicting the lifecycle of designs, style codes and other exciting initiatives.
