Google Cloud partnered with pest control brand, OFF to build a publicly available predictive model to determine when and where mosquito populations are thriving across the nation to prevent bites and control diseases like Zika, Malaria and more!

Mosquitoes aren’t just the peskiest creatures on Earth; they infect more than 700 million people a year with dangerous diseases like Zika, Malaria, Dengue Fever, and Yellow Fever. Prevention is the best protection, and stopping mosquito bites before they happen is a critical step.

SC Johnson—a leading developer and manufacturer of pest control products, consumer packaged goods, and other professional products—has an outsized impact in reducing the transmission of mosquito-borne diseases. That’s why Google Cloud was honored to team up with one of the company’s leading pest control brands, OFF!®, to develop a new publicly available, predictive model of when and where mosquito populations are emerging nationwide.

As the planet warms and weather changes, OFF! noticed month-to-month and year-to-year fluctuations in consumer habits at a regional level, due to changes in mosquito populations. Because of these rapid changes, it’s difficult for people to know when to protect themselves. The OFF!Cast Mosquito Forecast™, built on Google Cloud and available today, will predict mosquito outbreaks across the United States, helping communities protect themselves from both the nuisance of mosquitoes and the dangers of mosquito-borne diseases—with the goal of expanding to other markets, like Brazil and Mexico, in the near future.

With the OFF!Cast Mosquito Forecast™, anyone can get their local mosquito prediction as easily as a daily weather update. Powered by Google Cloud’s geospatial and data analytics technologies, OFF!Cast Mosquito Forecast is the world’s first public technology platform that predicts and shares mosquito abundance information. By applying data that is informed by the science of mosquito biology, OFF!Cast accurately predicts mosquito behavior and mosquito populations in specific geographical locations.

Starting today, anyone can easily explore OFF!Cast on a desktop or mobile device and get their local seven-day mosquito forecast for any zip code in the continental United States. People can also sign up to receive a weekly forecast. To make this forecasting tool as helpful as possible, OFF! modeled its user interface after popular weather apps, a familiar frame of reference for consumers.

The technology behind the OFF!Cast Mosquito Forecast


To create this first-of-its-kind forecast, OFF! stood up a secure and production-scale Google Cloud Platform environment and tapped into Google Earth Engine, our cloud-based geospatial analysis platform that combines satellite imagery and geospatial data with powerful computing to help people and organizations understand how the planet is changing.

The OFF!Cast Mosquito Forecast is the result of multiple data sources coming together to provide consumers with an accurate view of mosquito activity. First, Google Earth Engine extracts billions of individual weather data points. Then, a scientific algorithm co-developed by the SC Johnson Center for Insect Science and Family Health and Climate Engine experts translates that weather data into relevant mosquito information. Finally, the collected information is put into the model and distilled into a color-coded, seven-day forecast of mosquito populations. The model is applied to the lifecycle of a mosquito, starting from when it lays eggs to when it could bite a human.

The SC Johnson Center for Insect Science and Family Health is one the world’s leading entomology research centers, studying advanced science of insect biology, insect-borne disease prevention and effective product solutions for consumer use. The science behind brands like OFF! is grounded in knowledge from world-class entomologists who have devoted their careers to SC Johnson’s mission of eradicating diseases like Malaria and Zika.

“We are putting the power in consumers’ hands in providing them with a tool to help predict their exposure and prevent mosquito bites,” said Maude Meier, SC Johnson entomologist. “It’s an exciting time to be working in the field of insect science as we find new opportunities to combine science and technology, like Google Earth Engine, to be a force for good in our mission to prevent the spread of insect-borne diseases.”

It takes an ecosystem to battle mosquitos


Over the past decade, academics, scientists and NGOs have used Google Earth Engine and its earth observation data to make meaningful progress on climate research, natural resource protection, carbon emissions reduction and other sustainability goals. It has made it possible for organizations to monitor global forest loss in near real-time and has helped more than 160 countries map and protect freshwater ecosystems. Google Earth Engine is now available in preview with Google Cloud for commercial use.

Our partner, Climate Engine, was a key player in helping make the OFF!Cast Mosquito Forecast a reality. Climate Engine is a scientist-led company that works with Google Cloud and our customers to accelerate and scale the use of Google Earth Engine, in addition to those of Google Cloud Storage and BigQuery, among other tools. With Climate Engine, OFF! integrated insect data from VectorBase, an organization that collects and counts mosquitoes and is funded by the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

The model powering the OFF!Cast Mosquito Forecast combines three inputs—knowledge of a mosquito’s lifecycle, detailed climate data inputs, and mosquito population counts from more than 5,000 locations provided by VectorBase. The model’s accuracy was validated against precise mosquito population data collected over six years from more than 33 million mosquitoes across 141 different species at more than 5,000 unique trapping locations.

A better understanding of entomology, especially things like degree days and how they affect mosquito populations, and helping communities take action is critically important to improving public health. Research shows that over 90% of large organizations already deploy multicloud architectures, and their data is distributed across several public cloud providers. Additionally, data is also increasingly split across various storage systems such as warehouses, operational and relational databases, object stores, etc. With the proliferation of new applications, data is serving many more use cases such as data sciences, business intelligence, analytics, streaming and the list goes on. With these data trends, customers are increasingly gravitating towards an open multicloud data lake. However, multicloud data lakes present several challenges such as data silos, data duplication, fragmented governance, complexity of tools, and increased costs.

With Google’s data cloud technologies, customers can leverage the unique combination of distributed cloud services. They can create an agile cross-cloud semantic business layer with Looker and manage data lakes and data warehouses across cloud environments at scale with BigQuery and capabilities like BigLake and BigQuery Omni.

BigLake is a storage engine that unifies data warehouses and lake houses by standardizing across different storage formats including BigQuery managed table and open file formats such as Parquet and Apache Iceberg on object storage. BigQuery Omni provides the compute engine that runs locally to the storage on AWS or Azure, which customers can use to query data in AWS or Azure seamlessly. This provides several key benefits such as:

  1. A single pane of glass to query your multicloud data lakes (across Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft Azure)
  2. Cross-cloud analytics by combining data across different platforms with little to no egress costs
  3. Unified governance and secure management of your data wherever it resides


In this blog, we will share cross-cloud analytics use cases customers are solving with Google’s Data Cloud and the benefits they are realizing.

Unified marketing analytics for 360-degree insights

Organizations want to perform marketing analytics – ads optimization, inventory management, churn prediction, buyer propensity trends and many more such analytics. To do this before BigQuery Omni, customers had to use data from several different sources such as Google Analytics, public datasets and other proprietary information stored across cloud environments. This requires moving large amounts of data, managing duplicate copies and incremental costs to perform any cross-cloud analytics and derive actionable insights. With BigQuery Omni, organizations are able to greatly simplify this workflow. Using the familiar BigQuery interface, users can access data residing in AWS or Azure, discover and select just the relevant data that needs to be combined for further analysis. This subset of data can be moved to Google Cloud using Omni’s new Cross-Cloud Transfer capabilities. Customers can combine this data with other Google Cloud datasets and these consolidated tables can be made available to key business stakeholders through advanced analytics tools such as Looker and Looker Studio. Customers are also able to tie in this data now with world class AI models via Vertex AI.

As an illustrative example, consider a retailer who has sales & inventory, user and search data spread across multiple data silos. Using BigQuery Omni they can seamlessly bring these datasets together and power several marketing analytics scenarios like customer segmentation, campaign management and demand forecasting etc.

Data platform with consistent and unified cross-cloud governance

Another pattern is customers looking to analyze operational, transactional and business data across data silos in different clouds through a unified data platform. These data silos are a result of various factors such as merger and acquisitions, standardization of analytical tools, leveraging best of breed solutions in different clouds and diversification of data footprint across clouds. In addition to a single pane of glass for data access across silos, customers deeply desire consistent and uniform governance of their data across clouds.

With our financial and credit report data distributed across clouds, accessing and getting insights holistically is difficult. Through our exploration with Omni, we are able to access datasets in different clouds using a single familiar BigQuery interface; we see its promise as one of the primary tools in our multi-cloud platform.” — James Simonson, Senior Data Engineer, Achieve

With BigLake and BigQuery Omni abstracting the storage and compute layers respectively, organizations can access and query their data in Google Cloud irrespective of where it resides. They can also set fine-grained row level and column access policies in BigQuery and consistently govern it across clouds. These building blocks enable data engineering teams to build a unified and governed data platform for their data users without having to deal with the complexity of building and managing complex data pipelines. Furthermore, with BigQuery Omni’s integration with Dataplex and Data Catalog, you can discover, search your data across clouds and enrich your data by adding relevant business context with business glossary and rich text.

Simplified data sharing between data providers and their customers

A third emerging pattern in cross cloud analytics is data sharing. Several services have the business need to share information such as inventory data, subscriber data to their customers or users who in turn analyze or aggregate the data with their proprietary data and oftentimes share the results back with the service provider. In several cases, the two parties are on different cloud environments, requiring them to move data back and forth.

Consider a company operating in the customer data platform (CDP) space. CDPs were designed to help activate customer data, and a critical first step of that was unifying and managing that customer data. To enable this, many CDP vendors built their solution choosing one of the available cloud infrastructure technologies and copied data from the client’s systems.“Copying data from client applications and infrastructure has always been a requirement to deploy a CDP, but it doesn’t have to be anymore” — Justin DeBrabant, Senior Vice President of Product, ActionIQ.

While a small percentage of customers are fine with moving data across cloud environments, the majority are hesitant to onboard new services and would rather prefer providing governed access to their data sets.

“A new architectural pattern is emerging, allowing organizations to keep their data at one location and make it accessible, with the proper guardrails, to applications used by the rest of the organization’s stack” adds Justin at ActionIQ.

With BigQuery Omni, services in Google Cloud Platform can more easily access and share data with their customers and users in other cloud environments with limited data movement. One of UK’s largest statistics providers has explored Omni for their data sharing needs.

With BigQuery Omni, customers are able to:

  • Reduce the need for data engineering before analyzing data
  • Lower operational overhead and risks by deploying an application that runs across multiple clouds which leverages the same, consistent security controls
  • Accelerate access to insights by significantly reducing the time for data processing and analysis
  • Create consistent and predictable budgeting across multiple cloud footprints
  • Enable long term agility and maximize the benefits every cloud investment

Over the last year, we’ve seen great momentum in customer adoption and added significant innovations to BigQuery Omni including improved performance and scalability for querying your data in AWS S3 or Azure Blob Storage, Iceberg support for Omni, Larger query result set size up to 20GB and Cross-cloud transfer that helps customers easily, securely, and cost effectively move just enough data across cloud environments for advanced analytics.

BigQuery Omni has launched several features to support unified governance of your data across multiple clouds – you can get fine-grained access to your multi-cloud data with row level and column level security. Building on this, we are excited to announce that BigQuery Omni now supports data masking. We’ve also made it easy for customers to try and see the benefits of BigQuery Omni through the limited time free trial available until March 30, 2023.

BigQuery Omni running on other public clouds outside of Google Cloud is available in AWS US East1 (N.Virginia) and Azure US East2 (US East) regions. We are also excited to share that we will be bringing BigQuery Omni to more regions in the future, starting with Asia Pacific (AWS Korea) coming soon.

As organizations expand their use of cloud computing services, more of their sensitive data inevitably moves to and lives in the cloud. Much of this sensitive data is unstructured and can be challenging to secure. Despite this potential challenge, the usefulness of cloud for data storage and processing is too big for most organizations to ignore and has in turn led to data sprawl, where their sensitive data is spread over many resources, both in the cloud and on-premise. Addressing data sprawl requires solutions that can discover, manage, and secure sensitive data, especially unstructured data, as it spreads.

To help organizations confidently move their sensitive data to the cloud, Google Cloud works diligently to earn and maintain customer trust. Control and transparency are pillars of our approach to offering a trusted cloud. Therefore, we’ve been expanding our capabilities to act on unstructured data as sprawl increases.

Given the importance of these capabilities to our strategy, we are happy to announce today that Forrester Research has named Google Cloud a Leader in The Forrester Wave™: Unstructured Data Security Platforms, Q2 2021 report, and rated Google Cloud highest in the current offering category among the providers evaluated.

The report evaluates the 11 most significant providers with platform solutions to secure and protect unstructured data, spanning from cloud providers to data security-focused vendors. The report notes that “Google offers breadth and depth with built-in data security in the cloud. Google Cloud Platform, Google Workspace, and BeyondCorp Enterprise have underlying data security products and features for protecting customer data.”

Google Cloud tools focused on protecting unstructured data were developed and battle-tested internally at Google to alleviate some of our own data security challenges. This brings the best of Google security to the organizations utilizing Google Cloud and our security tools. The report highlights that “Google productizes capabilities originally developed to secure its own business, and brings a disciplined approach to product enhancements for enterprise requirements. It serves a wide range of enterprise and mid-market, with a focus on emphasizing data protection needs by industry. ”

Google Cloud’s data security strategy focuses on meeting customers wherever they are in their cloud migration journey. The report highlights that “Google further enables a Zero Trust approach with third-party integrations through its BeyondCorp Alliance of partners in device management, endpoint security and gateways.”

Google Cloud received the highest possible score in sixteen criteria, in total receiving the most 5 out of 5 ratings among all vendors assessed. These criteria include: Data Intelligence, Access Control, Deletion, Obfuscation-Scope, Obfuscation-Key Management, Deployment, Security and Risk, APIs and Integration, Data Security Platform Vision, Data Security Execution Roadmap, Performance, Planned Enhancements, Zero Trust Enabling Partner Ecosystem, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Installed Base, and Revenue. 

Notably, Google Cloud received the highest possible score in the Obfuscation criteria. Obfuscation can help protect sensitive data, like personally identifiable information (PII), which is critical to many enterprise workflows. Cloud DLP helps customers inspect and mask this sensitive data with techniques like redaction, bucketing, and tokenization, which help strike the balance between risk and utility. This is especially crucial when dealing with unstructured or free-text workloads, in which it can be challenging to know what data to redact. More than 150 detectors combine to power Cloud DLP’s masking, which can be deployed in data migrations and business workloads like real-time data collection and processing. For Obfuscation specifically, the report mentioned that Google “takes a broad view of DLP, which includes in-line redaction of sensitive elements in unstructured data and DLP APIs that extend support to additional data types like images or other media.”

Our Google Cloud teams have identified eight strategies that successful organizations are pursuing to trim expenses and uncover new sources of revenue through intelligent use of data and AI. The results are impressive. They include massive cost savings and additional revenue. On-time deliveries have increased sharply at one company, and procure-to-pay processing costs have fallen by more than half at another. Other organizations have reaped big gains in ecommerce upselling and customer satisfaction.

We’ve found that businesses across every industry and around the globe are able to take action on at least one of these eight strategies. Contrary to common misperceptions, implementation does not require massive technology changes, crippling disruption to your business, or burdensome new investments. 

What success looks like

Carrefour 
Among the world’s largest retailers, Carrefour operates supermarkets, ecommerce, and other store formats in more than 30 countries. To retain leadership in its markets, the company wanted to strengthen its omnichannel experience.

Carrefour moved to Google Data Cloud and developed a platform that gives its data scientists secure, structured access to a massive volume of data in minutes. This paved the way for smarter models of customer behavior and enabled a personalized recommendation engine for ecommerce services. 

The company saw a 60% increase in ecommerce revenue during the pandemic, which it partly attributes to this personalization. 

ATB Financial 
ATB Financial, a bank in the Canadian province of Alberta, uses its data and AI to provide real-time personalized customer service, generating more than 20,000 AI-assisted conversations monthly. Machine learning models enable agents to offer clients real-time tailored advice and product suggestions. 

Moreover, marketing campaigns and month-end processes that used to take five to eight hours now run in seconds, saving over CA$2.24 million a year. 

Bank BRI
Bank BRI, which is owned by the Indonesian government, has 75.5 million clients. Through its use of digital technologies, the institution amasses a lot of valuable data about this large customer base. 

Using Google Cloud, the bank packages this data through more than 50 monetized open APIs for more than 70 ecosystem partners who use it for credit scoring, risk management, and other applications. Fintechs, insurance companies, and financial institutions don’t have the talent or the financial resources to do quality credit scoring and fraud detection on their own, so they are turning to Bank BRI. 

Early in the effort, the project generated an additional $50 million in revenue, showing how data can drive new sources of income.

Operate: Billing that’s specific to your use-case
Control your costs by choosing data and analytics vendors who offer industry-leading data storage solutions and flexible pricing options. For example, multiple pricing options such as flat rate and pay-as-you-go allow you to optimize your spend for best price-performance.

Inform: make informed decisions based on usage
Use your cloud vendor’s dashboards or build a billing data report to gain insights on your spending over time. Make use of cost recommendations and other forecasting tools to predict what your future expenses are going to be.

Optimize: Never pay more than you use 
While planning data analytics capacity, organizations often overprovision and overpay than what they actually use. Consider migrating your workloads that have unpredictable demand to a data warehousing solution that offers granular level autoscaling features so that you never have to pay for more than what you use.

Data drive decisions for companies to be successful and customer focused. Experts at Google suggest specializing in data cloud skills for data practitioners to stay ahead of the trends and leverage technologies that support their data journeys.

It’s 2022 and nanosatellites, NFTs, and autonomous cars that deliver your pizza are in full force. In a world where people rely on simple technology to untangle complex problems, companies must deliver simple experiences to be successful in today’s landscape. For many cloud providers this means enabling tightly integrated data offerings that simplify the data delivery process without losing sight of the sophisticated needs of the modern data consumer. 

But while the name of the game is helping companies reach informed decisions from their data simpler and faster, what about the data practitioners – data analysts, data engineers, database administrators, developers, etc – who use these cloud data tools and technologies everyday? To proactively stay ahead of data cloud market trends in 2022 should data practitioners invest their time in specializing their data cloud skill sets (e.g. go deep in, say, data pipelining skills) or instead invest their time generalizing their data cloud skill sets (e.g. growing proficiencies in a mix of data analytics, databases, AI/ML, and more domains)? 

Skill deep or wide with data – that is the question

For Abdul Razack, VP, Solutions Engineering, Technology Solutions and Strategy at Google Cloud, the answer is a bit of both. 

“Data practitioners need to be broad in terms of their technology skills, but specialized with respect to the domain or domains in which they apply them. The reason why is because many things that used to be separate skill sets are now converging – like business analytics, streaming, machine learning, data pipelines, and data warehousing. Data practitioners need to be able to implement end-to-end workflows that solve specific business problems using skills from each category.”

It’s true, thousands of customers are choosing Google’s data cloud because it offers a unified and open approach to cloud that enables their practitioners to break down silos, begin and end projects without leaving the data platform, and innovate faster across their organization. 

The data practitioners who mirror Google data cloud’s frame of mind of being smart and agile across data domains in their skilling and learning will reap the benefits of solving more nuanced problems – building out internet-scale applications, fine tuning smart processes with analytics and AI, constructing data meshes that make product building simple, etc – at a larger scale than they would if they specialized in just one or two areas alone.

“Of course at the end of the day it depends on what tools a data practitioner is using to complete their workflows. There’s only so much you can learn and skills you can develop when you’re using limited tools. Growing data proficiencies across the board is made a lot easier when you’re using a data platform like BigQuery to address all these needs. BigQuery eliminates the choices you have to make – for instance you don’t have to choose between streaming data and data at rest, batch and realtime, or business intelligence and data science. Knowing your value is half the battle when upskilling

While some experts think technology is the limiting factor of whether or not you can even go wide or go deep in the first place, others like Google Cloud’s Head of Data and Analytics Bruno Aziza purport that it also depends on who you are, who you wish to be, and what investments your company is making to ensure you can become that person. 

“If you wish to set yourself up to be a Chief Data Officer, then you’ll want to understand how technologies fit together across your data estate first” said Aziza. “Only after you feel like you’re the go-to ‘data person’ can you then decide which part of the technology stack you want to double-down on.”

But technology isn’t everything. Aziza notes, “Make sure you focus on the  business impact that your data work provides.  You want to spend as much time as you can with your business counterparts to understand their business goals and challenges. The Harvard Business Review provides great guidance on how to succeed as a Chief Data Officer.”

Even if you don’t have your sights set on a C-suite role, both Aziza and Razack contend that the number one skill data practitioners should tackle in 2022 is actually a broad and perhaps abstract one: develop and exercise the curiosity to solve problems with a data-driven strategy. 

That is, today’s data practitioners should always be interested in educating themselves in the industry and continually upskilling in something. And their employers should also be invested in helping practitioners develop those interests, most likely through exposure to learning materials, engaging in career conversations, subsidized courses, or incentives attached to pursuing a new certification or skill.  

“Every industry is going through a digital transformation and the ability to identify what data to collect, how to prepare the data, and how to derive insights from it is critical. Therefore, the ability to find business challenges and formulate a data-driven approach to address those problems is the most important skill to have.” Abdul Razack – VP, Solutions Engineering, Technology Solutions and Strategy, Google Cloud.

Take the example of the “Data Mesh” I just wrote about in VentureBeat.  You’ll find 3 types of attitudes towards this new concept. There are Disciples who encourage continued learning only from the source – like the author of a new book or the creator of a theory. There are Distractors who tell you that new skills, trends, and technologies are fake news. And there are Distorters like vendors who will sell you one easy fix solution. But it’s the data practitioner who needs to proceed with caution when interacting with all three types  and forge their own path to discovering the truth when they’re learning and building skills. And for better or worse, this comes with trial and error, experimentation, and an eagerness to grow relative to where they began.”
