BPCE: machine learning helps us help our clients
An arm of BPCE Group, the second largest banking group in France, was feeling the effects of the pandemic’s impact on customers. It needed a more efficient way of determining who would need what type of help—and when–to reduce the number of customers entering the collections process. Using its wealth of data to create and deploy a machine learning model in Prevision.io, the firm was able to rapidly identify the most at-risk customers and better understand the root causes behind potential debt default—some of which are easily fixable. As a result, the firm has seen a fifteen-fold increase in the sums they have been able to recover, and decreased the number of collection cases by 50%.

Pharmaceutical company: marketing medicine with MLOps
The marketing department at a healthcare company serving pharmacies was able to reduce customer churn and improve growth by using Prevision.io to compute market segmentation based on anticipated customer revenue. This helped the company determine the best way to engage with each pharmacy—and when. Being able to make strategic decisions based on automated predictions and more targeted data saved the company $1.3M Euros in two fiscal quarters.

As the flag carrier airline of the Netherlands, the vision of KLM’s marketing programme is to humanise advertising through personalisation and relevance at scale. Its experiments with machine learning revealed it could lower cost per booking by 40%, achieve more than twice as many bookings at the same spend, and drive a 1.4x click-through rate.

KLM partnered with Relay42, whose data management platform (DMP) empowers marketers to achieve data-driven personalisation at scale.

The Relay42 DMP works by stitching together all touchpoints and data sources (including all Google solutions), orchestrating customer journeys in real-time and then activating the unified data to drive business and user experience results.

Relay42 and KLM created a data flow setup with the Relay42 DMP at the core. Thanks to Relay42’s tag management system, all customer interactions on KLM’s website and app, as well as relevant indicators from other channels and data sources such as email, social, CRM, call center and affiliates can be tracked and synced in Google Analytics 360.

Data gathered via Relay42’s own tags and DoubleClick Floodlight tags can also be sent from the DMP to the DoubleClick platform so that relevant ads can be targeted to appropriate audiences.

In order to perform deep-dive analyses, KLM simply exports raw-level data (from DoubleClick using Data Transfer and from Google Analytics 360 through seamless integration) to BigQuery. BigQuery can then correlate site behaviour with ad impressions, which enables Relay42 to activate the data and inform the build of predictive models.

By combining data sources, leveraging first-party data and activating this in real-time, advertising can turn into a personal dialogue, a rewarding one-to-one interaction instead of one-to-many push messaging.”

A Predictive Model to Improve Display Remarketing

KLM decided to test a new approach to remarketing.

“Our goal was to get rid of irrelevant ads, as they are simply annoying”, explains Kevin Duijndam, the airline’s Cross Channel Marketing Manager.

“Our assumption was that people who fly with us often already know us, so it would be irrelevant to tell them about flying with us again. However, we were wondering when exactly someone is a ‘frequent flyer’. The more we thought about it, the more complex the set of business rules became, so in the end we realized we couldn’t just focus on frequent flyers, but instead should use machine learning to understand when ads are irrelevant.”

KLM developed a real-time buying setup to include predictive modelling. In this setup, website and app interactions are tracked in the DMP thanks to the Relay42 tag management system.

Relevant consumer behaviour can be streamed in real-time to a prediction engine developed by KLM in the Google Cloud Platform, with the outputs then streamed straight back to the DMP. From here, the DMP can activate rule-based segments based on the prediction outcome. And by syncing this with DoubleClick, ads can be served and targeted to maximise relevance.

The team tested their new predictive model to assess any gains in performance. KLM deliberately chose to measure the results in an A/B setup within a defined period rather than measuring the differences year over year or month over month. Such comparisons are less reliable due to rapid changes relating to seasonality, internal capacities and external factors caused by competitors.

Business Gains and Customer Experience Wins

In the test, KLM linked the Relay42 DMP customer interaction data to their predictive model to predict how relevant their ads would be. The setup enabled a decision to be made in real-time whether or not to serve a specific ad to a user.

Through the A/B tests it became clear that the new model in fact did generate a significant uplift in bookings. With the cost per booking 40% lower during the test period, KLM was able to achieve more than twice as many bookings at the same spend.

 The test produced wins in terms of customer experience, too. The click-through rate for the test group was more than 1.4 times higher than for the control group, indicating that the new model was successfully reaching users with messages they found to be relevant rather than annoying.

 The success goes beyond improving KLM’s display remarketing efforts, though.

“Even more importantly, we’ve laid the IT data flow foundation in such a way that KLM is now able to execute on our data through all of our digital marketing channels and apply our prediction models at scale”, Kevin says. “So we can be flexible to plug in other models but can also now scale through other online media channels like search or video.”

Boost Your ML Training Speed with GKE’s NCCL Fast Socket

Explore how NCCL Fast Socket supercharges machine learning training on Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), maximizing efficiency in distributed computing tasks.

Large Machine Learning (ML) models – such as large language models, generative AI, and vision models – are dramatically increasing the number of trainable parameters and are achieving state-of-the-art results. Increasing the number of parameters results in the model being too large to fit on a single VM instance thus demands distributed compute to spread the model across multiple nodes. Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) has built-in support for NCCL Fast Socket, to help improve the time to train large ML models with distributed, multi-node clusters.

Enterprises are looking for faster and cheaper performance to train their ML models. With distributed training, communicating gradients across nodes is a performance bottleneck. Optimizing inter-node latency is critical to reduce training time and costs. Distributed training uses collective communication as a transport layer over the network between the multiple hosts. Collective communication primitives such as all-gather, all-reduce, broadcast, reduce, reduce-scatter, and point-to-point send and receive are used in distributed training in Machine Learning. 

The NVIDIA Collective Communication Library (NCCL) is commonly used by popular ML frameworks such as TensorFlow and PyTorch. It is a highly optimized implementation for high bandwidth and low latency between NVIDIA GPUs. Google developed a proprietary version of NCCL called NCCL Fast Socket to optimize performance for deep learning on Google Cloud.

NCCL Fast Socket uses a number of techniques to achieve better and more consistent NCCL performance.

  • Use of multiple network flows to attain maximum throughput. NCCL Fast Socket introduces additional optimizations over NCCL’s built-in multi-stream support, including better overlapping of multiple communication requests.
  • Dynamic load balancing of multiple network flows. NCCL can adapt to changing network and host conditions. With this optimization, straggler network flows will not significantly slow down the entire NCCL collective operation.
  • Integration with Google Cloud’s Andromeda virtual network stack.This increases overall network throughput by avoiding contentions in virtual machines (VMs).

We tested (NVIDIA NCCL tests) the performance of NCCL Fast Socket vs NCCL on various machine shapes with 2 node GKE clusters.

The following chart shows the results. For each machine shape, the NCCL performance without Fast Socket is normalized to 1. In each case, using NCCL Fast Socket demonstrated increased performance in a range of 1.3 to 2.6 times faster internetwork communication speed.

As a built-in feature, GKE users can take advantage of NCCL Fast Socket without changing or recompiling their applications, ML frameworks (such as TensorFlow or PyTorch), or even the NCCL library itself. To start using NCCL Fast Socket, create a node pool that uses the plugin with the --enable-fast-socket and --enable-gvnic flags. You can also update an existing node pool using gcloud container node-pools update.

Existing learning platforms lack engagement

Outside of traditional education settings, massive open online learning courses (MOOCs)—often modeled after university courses—can provide a flexible and affordable way to upskill or reskill. But the vast majority of people who participate in MOOC programs fail to complete courses. Based on our research, the challenge with existing learning platforms is a lack of engagement, primarily caused by limited direction on which skills to learn, whether AI, fintech, blockchain, or other in-demand disciplines.   

We’ve also received feedback that many corporate learning management systems–developed as online training systems to upskill employees–tend to be poorly designed and time-consuming to use. 

Overall, a significant challenge with most existing learning platforms is that they’re generic. For example, suppose you’re interested in learning about AI. In that case, you need AI-related coursework that applies to your industry and the job you want because AI in medicine is vastly different from AI in financial services. Today’s online learning options typically take a one-size-fits-all approach and fail to capture the nuances of what learners really need to get ahead.
