Google invests nearly one billion euros on Germany's digital infrastructure and sustainable cloud projects to support the growing demand from its businesses. The investments will secure the country's digital future and strengthen its tech innovation.

In September 2001, the first-ever German Google employee switched on their computer in Hamburg. Since then, we’ve grown to more than 2,500 employees in four offices across Germany. Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Munich have long been our home, and we continue to invest in the growth of the local economy.

Today, 20 years after the start of “Google Germany”, we are pleased to present one of our most important investment programs to date in this country. With the expansion of our Cloud Region in Frankfurt in a new Google-owned Hanau facility, a new Google Cloud region in Berlin-Brandenburg, and a broad investment plan in renewable energy, our commitment is clear: Google is investing in Germany’s potential and supporting the transition to a digital and sustainable economy. Between now (2021) and 2030, this investment in digital infrastructure and clean energy will total approximately 1 billion euros.

Expanding our Frankfurt cloud region to support growing demand from German businesses and organizations

In Hanau, only 20 kilometers from the DE-CIX Internet hub in Frankfurt, Google is proud to be nearing completion of an additional cloud facility that will be fully operational in 2022. This expansion of our existing Frankfurt Google Cloud region will serve the growing demand for Google Cloud services in Germany.

The 4-story building is 10,000 square meters and was sustainably constructed with energy efficient infrastructure and adherence to our circular economy model for waste. The symbolic handover of the keys from developer NDC-Garbe, together with local government officials, took place on site yesterday.

A new cloud region in Berlin-Brandenburg

In addition to the Hanau expansion of our Google Cloud region in Frankfurt, we are pleased to announce that a new Google Cloud region will be located in Berlin-Brandenburg, further extending our ability to meet growing demand for cloud services in the country. When open, this will be our second Google Cloud region in Germany, providing enterprise customers with faster access to secure infrastructure, smart analytics tools and an open platform. Designed and dedicated to providing enterprise services and products for Google Cloud customers of all sizes and industries in Germany, the Berlin-Brandenburg region will have three zones to protect against service disruptions and join the existing network of 27 Google Cloud regions connected via our high-performance network.

One of the cleanest clouds in the industry becomes even cleaner

Since 2017, Google has matched 100% of our global, annual electricity use with renewable energyLast year, we set out to run our business on carbon-free energy everywhere and at all times by 2030, enabling us to offer cloud customers one of the cleanest clouds in the industry, while helping Europe achieve its ambitious climate goals.

Today, we’re excited to announce that ENGIE Deutschland has been selected as Google’s carbon-free energy supplier in Germany. Under the terms of the agreement, ENGIE will assemble and develop, on Google’s behalf, a 140 megawatt (MW) carbon-free energy portfolio in Germany that has the ability to flex and grow with us as our needs change. This includes a new 39MW solar Photovoltaic system, and 22 wind parks in five federal states that will see their lives extended so they continue to produce electricity instead of being dismantled. This portfolio will ensure that the energy delivered to Google’s German facilities will be nearly 80% carbon-free by 2022 when measured on an hourly basis. This is a first but important step on Google’s journey to reach our goal of full electricity decarbonization by 2030.

This is the first energy supply of its kind in Europe, with a focus on sourcing carbon-free energy for every hour of Google’s operations. Not only will this new agreement draw the roadmap for the industry and more 24/7 carbon-free energy contracts in Europe, but it provides our cloud customers with two more regions where they can lower their carbon footprint. And importantly, by working with our energy suppliers to transform how clean energy is delivered to customers, Google is supporting the broader decarbonization of the German electricity grid.

What customers and partners are saying

As companies continue to grapple with changing customer demands, technology has played a critical role, and we’ve been fortunate to partner with and serve people, companies, and government institutions in Germany and around the world to help them adapt. The Google Cloud region in Berlin-Brandenburg and the expansion of our Google Cloud region in Hanau will help our customers — such as BMGDelivery Hero, and Deutsche Bank — adapt to new requirements, new opportunities and new ways of working.

“We are very pleased about the symbolic handover of the keys to the building here in Hanau to Google Cloud,” said Hanau Mayor Claus Kaminsky. “With Google, we have a strong partner at our side who is supporting us in setting up Hanau’s economic future, both digitally and sustainably. The data center facility of Google Cloud embodies this transformation: We bring the cloud to us in Hanau and thus support the digital transformation of companies and public authorities. Not only in our city and Hesse, but throughout Germany and Europe. The new building meets high sustainability standards and the clean energy initiative presented today by Google is in line with our aspirations for sustainable digitalization.”

“Sustainability is a central pillar of Deutsche Bank’s strategy and we have made strong public commitments to be part of the solution,” said Bernd Leukert, Chief Technology, Data and Innovation Officer and Member of the Management Board at Deutsche Bank. “We welcome the new Google Cloud region in Germany, which will enable us to deliver additional resilience and performance for our German client base.”

Ralf Bernhard, Senior Originator Renewables, ENGIE, said: “ENGIE is excited to collaborate with Google based on a first-of-a-kind agreement which will support the company with its sustainability goals and ambitious carbon-free energy target. Thanks to our expertise in energy and risk management, we can seamlessly integrate renewable energy from existing plants and develop new assets to design a tailor made product that meets Google’s needs and plans to go even greener.”

20 years since Google first touched down in Germany, our commitment to helping Germany continue to lead in technical innovation is stronger than ever. We are excited to continue working with our partners in Hesse, Berlin and Brandenburg and across Germany to advance infrastructure and clean energy projects, help accelerate digital transformation, and secure a sustainable future for German and European companies and organizations.

The most insightful time you'll spend today!

Google Cloud migration for VMware workloads impacts savings 38 percent in TCO. Still considering the pros of Google Cloud VMWare Engine? Here are seven customer-centric innovations in its infrastructure that makes its ideal for Vsphere workloads!

Google Cloud VMware Engine delivers an enterprise-grade, cloud-native VMware experience that is built on Google Cloud’s highly performant and scalable infrastructure. By enabling a consistent VMware experience, the service allows customers to adopt Google Cloud rapidly, easily, and with minimal modifications to their vSphere workloads, bringing the best of VMware and Google Cloud together on one platform for a variety of use-cases. These include rapid data center exit, application lift and shift, disaster recovery, virtual desktop infrastructure, or modernization at your own pace.

Here are seven ways VMware Engine outshines alternatives for running your VMware workloads in the cloud, simplify your operations, and help you innovate faster:

  1. Dedicated 100Gbps east-west networking
Google Cloud VMware Engine nodes come with redundant switching and dedicated 100Gbps east-west networking with no oversubscription of bandwidth, unlike other options where there is generally oversubscription. This is especially important when it comes to running latency-sensitive workloads.
  2. Four 9’s of availability in a single zone
The service offers 99.99% uptime SLA for a cluster in a single Zone with five to 16 nodes and FTT=2 or more without the need for stretched clusters, which is higher than the alternatives. Further, dedicated connectivity for core service functions such as vSAN and vMotion enables better solution stability and availability. This enables the service to support the needs of enterprise workloads that require high availability.

Note: “Cluster” means a deployment of three or more dedicated bare metal nodes running VMware ESXi and associated networking managed via management interfaces.

  1. Global networking without complex routing
Google Cloud VMware Engine networking is built based on Google Cloud’s powerful networking architecture. With simplified regional and global routing modes—which allow a VPC’s subnets to be deployed in any region where our service is available—you can architect global networks without the need or overhead of creating and connecting regional network designs. You get instant, direct Layer 3 access between them. In alternative cloud environments, you may have to configure special networking between regions, often requiring VPN-based tunnels over the WAN to enable global uniform network communication. This adds to the deployment and operational complexity, in addition to cost.
  2. Integrated multi-VPC networking
Users often have application deployments in different VPC networks, such as separate dev/test and production environments or multiple administrative domains across business units. The service supports “many-to-many” access from VPC networks to Google Cloud VMware Engine networks with multi-VPC networking, allowing you to retain existing deployed architectures and extend them flexibly to your VMware environments. In addition, by providing multi-VPC networking, you can pool their VMware needs—say for QA and dev—to a smaller set of clusters, effectively reducing their costs.

For more information about the end-to-end networking capabilities and services available in Google Cloud VMware Engine, please refer to the Private Cloud Networking for Google Cloud VMware Engine whitepaper. Here, you’ll find details about network flows, configuration options, and the differentiated benefits of running your VMware workloads in Google Cloud.

  1. Unified, cloud-integrated model
Google Cloud VMware Engine is a fully managed Google first-party service, operated and supported by Google and its world-class team. With fully integrated identities, billing, and access control, you have a simpler end-to-end experience that is different from other services. You access Google Cloud VMware Engine service via the Google Cloud console, like any other Google Cloud service. You can also access other native Google Cloud services privately from your VMware private cloud running in Google Cloud VMware Engine over local connections.
  2. Flexibility in third-party ecosystem compatibility
With Google Cloud VMware Engine, you can set up existing VMware on-premises third-party tools or products that require additional privileges by using a solution user account. This uniquely enables operational consistency, ensuring that the tools you have invested in and used over the years work on Google Cloud VMware Engine. Furthermore, in key areas such as vSAN data encryption, you have the choice of not only using Google Cloud Key Management Service (KMS)—which is turned on by default on vSAN datastores—but also external KMS providers such as HyTrust, Thales, and Fortanix.
  3. Dense nodes with high storage:core and memory:core ratios and fast provisioning
Google Cloud VMware Engine nodes are dense. Each node is powered by Intel® Xeon® Scalable Processors and comes with 36 cores, 72 hyperthreaded cores, 768 GB memory, 19.2 TB NVMe data and 3.2 TB NVMe cache storage. This, along with oversubscription, leads to high consolidation ratios and compelling storage:core per dollar and memory:core per dollar. In addition, you can rapidly spin up these nodes in a VMware private cloud often in under an hour, enabling on-demand, VMware-consistent capacity in Google Cloud for your needs.

These are just a few examples of customer-centric innovation that set Google Cloud VMware Engine infrastructure apart. In addition, migrating to Google cloud can save you up to 38% in TCO. Get started by learning about Google Cloud VMware Engine and your options for migration, or talk to our sales team to join the customers who have embarked upon this journey.

The authors would like to thank the Google Cloud VMware Engine product team for their contributions on this blog.

Route4Me improved scalability, flexibility, reliability, and reduced costs by moving its core routing optimization algorithms and clusters to Google Cloud.

Google Cloud Results

  • Improves application performance by 8x to 12x; customers can create increasingly complex optimized driving routes in single-digit seconds
  • Improves customer satisfaction via increased reliability and greater application performance
  • Focuses on adding value to customers by improving software and algorithms, not infrastructure management
  • Saves 5x in infrastructure costs

In 2009, Dan Khasis needed to rent an apartment. His search had him driving around the greater New York City area in unfamiliar areas, scattershot-style, often ending up where he started. The frustrating experience led the serial entrepreneur to launch Route4Me, a smartphone navigation app to help consumers create driving routes optimized for multiple stops.

Soon, business users recognized Route4Me’s value and requested enhancements specifically for them. While route optimization apps for big businesses already existed, they were almost exclusively offline desktop programs that were expensive to purchase, deploy, and get trained on. Recognizing the opportunity, Route4Me developed an affordable route optimization solution across various devices, such as smartphones, smartwatches, and telematics devices. The software was tailored to logistics-intensive businesses such as last-mile delivery services and business units conducting field sales, field service, and field marketing functions.

As Route4Me grew its user base, it became clear that its infrastructure of rented, dedicated servers from various providers wasn’t sustainable. “The hardware costs seemed low, but there were many risks and hidden costs,” says Dan Khasis, Co-founder and CEO at Route4Me. For example, “Multi-zone disaster recovery, high availability, automated failover, and on-demand surging of many nodes was simply impossible,“ he adds.

Because under the hood Route4Me’s routing optimization platform requires complex computations, the company needed a globally scalable infrastructure capable of delivering low latency and high throughput. Route4Me also needed to stay competitive by developing and delivering new services as quickly and efficiently as possible.

For these and other reasons, Route4Me moved 100% into the cloud. “Like many entrepreneurial software companies, we test all the latest technologies we can find before upgrading. Typically we go with the fastest technology, with a strong bias towards open source and open standards,” Khasis says. Based on extensive testing, Route4Me selected Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Along with the scalability, flexibility, reliability, and low-cost structure of GCP, Route4Me had already migrated its entire platform to containerized microservices, which Khasis says “are extremely stable and reliable” on Google Kubernetes Engine. While Route4Me has proprietary routing and route optimization engines, it uses Google Maps for high-precision geocoding and as the frontend.

With GCP, Route4Me has reduced its IT infrastructure costs while delivering faster route optimizations and more reliable service to customers. Because of GCP, the company is also planning to add services that will deliver the fastest possible routing simulations and calculations to customers at a price that Khasis says is “impossible without a mature cloud-based platform like GCP.”

Unexpected savings, pleasant surprises

The migration to GCP and Kubernetes Engine required Route4Me to revamp its Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and convert millions of lines of code into containerized microservices running on Kubernetes Engine. With more than 150 microservices and thousands of add-on modules and features offered on the Route4Me platform, the migration took several months. But the transition, which began in May 2017 and concluded toward year’s end, went smoothly. “Thanks to the reliability and open source portability of Google Kubernetes Engine, Route4Me experienced one-tenth of the problems that we’ve had when onboarding to other cloud providers,” says Khasis.

Halfway into the migration, Route4Me engineers discovered an unexpected cost savings. The ability to run preemptible virtual machine (VM) instances with Kubernetes Engine resulted in a 90% savings in infrastructure costs, according to Khasis.

The engineering team was also pleasantly surprised by the improved intra-system latency and performance between the Google network and those of third-party systems and other data centers that Route4Me connects to. Overall latency dropped from 8x to 12x. “Where it used to take 8 to 14 seconds to plan a complicated route, now it takes as little as 2 seconds,” Khasis says. Route4Me is also running most of its transactional and operational data through Google BigQuery for a variety of business use cases, including complex machine learning tasks such as geospatial analytics, geospatial pattern detection, and synthetic density.

Scaling while delivering great performance

Route4Me algorithms take into account such data as driving distance, driving time, who’s driving, the day of the week, the vehicle being used, weather conditions, and dozens of other attributes. “All those scenarios and data have to be run in near real time,” Khasis explains. The Route4Me system must access multiple internal and external databases, aggregate all the information in parallel, and deliver it using a high-speed infrastructure platform.

“Our core services and algorithms work much faster on a Google architecture, bringing the total time to solve a complex route problem down to single-digit seconds.” “Many of those steps are resource-intensive,” Khasis adds. “With Kubernetes Engine clusters, we can do much more, scaling up and down as needed, and still deliver great performance to customers around the world.”

Because of its scale, Route4Me built its own automation system for marketing, support, and communications with its customers. “Since we moved our proprietary marketing automation system to GCP, we began delivering our omni-channel marketing communications more reliably, and the correct message reached customers faster and at just the right moment,” says Khasis. “That’s translated to happier customers and increased revenue.”

Customer satisfaction has increased, too, because Route4Me’s users experience far fewer slowdowns than before due to the reliability of GCP. The reliability also means the company spends less time worrying about certain clusters or servers going down for extended periods of time. “We have zero sysadmins, which was the Achilles heel of some of my previous startups,” says Khasis. “So we can focus on software development rather than infrastructure management.”

In order to scale as needed and develop new features, Khasis had expected the company would need to hire more SysAdmin, DevOps, and SecOps staff. “But once we migrated to the modern GCP environment, we didn’t have to make those hires. We saved a lot of money by not having to hire, train, and manage more people,” explains Khasis.

Flexible GCP pricing, in which customers only pay for what they use, has saved Route4Me money on its IT infrastructure. “Preemptible server pricing on GCP is so aggressive,” Khasis says. “If servers are automatically shut off for a certain time period, we don’t pay for them for that period. And if servers are on for a certain amount of time, we get an automatic 30% discount. We’re saving money on the platform with fixed and dynamic workloads.”

Per-second billing with GCP also helps Route4Me cut costs. “If it only takes 25 seconds to do something, we only pay for those 25 seconds,” Khasis says. For the same 25 seconds, other cloud providers might charge for 10 minutes usage or even an hour.”

Road map for the future

In the coming year, Route4Me plans to offer additional add-ons as part of its self-service marketplace, providing customers with transparent pricing on highly complex route optimizations. The service will be extremely valuable to heavy users. For instance, if an organization has to visit 50,000 locations by a certain time, it might wonder if it needs to add 20 people to make that happen and how much it’s going to cost. “Because we’re on GCP, our customer can run a variety of complicated routing scenarios to see which one is the most efficient in seconds instead of minutes,” says Khasis. “As far as I know, none of our competitors can offer that kind of service, giving us an edge as well as a new revenue stream.”

Going forward, Route4Me will begin migrating a huge portion of its core routing optimization platform to Google Google Cloud Spanner. “We want to take further advantage of Cloud Spanner, which comes closest to the CAP theorem and permits us to operate an infinitely scalable and nearly indestructible platform,” Khasis says.

As one example, Route4Me receives telematics data, such as GPS coordinates, from Internet of Things (IoT) devices in smartphones and vehicles, and performs complex algorithmic analysis running on Cloud Spanner. This provides real-time return on investment (ROI) information, so customers can see how much money they’re saving by using Route4Me routing optimization services.

“In order to help as many logistics-intensive businesses as possible, we intend to migrate our proprietary mapping, routing, and route optimization services to Cloud Spanner to take advantage of its extreme reliability and redundancy, and the multi-availability zones of Google Cloud Platform,” says Khasis.

Route4Me also plans to leverage Google machine learning technology, in part to make its routing solution available for use in autonomous and drone vehicles, as well as decentralized edge computing deployments. In addition, Google security and encryption technology will help the company expand its offerings to the heavily regulated medical industry.

Over 60 Route4Me team members use G Suite for almost everything. ”We’re interested in using everything possible with G Suite. We get inspiration from G Suite, too. A lot of thinking and effort went into improving G Suite, and we use that as inspiration to improve own products.”

withVR from Google for Startups Cloud Program leverages various Google Cloud products to make VR therapy accessible to individuals with speech disorders. Read to know how the startup is committed towards using technology to support speech therapy!

Editor’s note: Meet Gareth Walkom, an entrepreneur dedicated to helping others with speech disorders.

Turning life experience into innovation

Did you know that 3% of Americans have a speech disorder, while 1% of the world’s population have a stutter? Just getting what they need in everyday interactions can be stressful, which intensifies when the stakes are raised during job interviews, presentations, public speaking, and other activities. As a result, some people with speech disorders may avoid conversations and relationships, and risk being denied jobs because of a difference in how they speak.

As a person who stutters, I know firsthand the ableism that people with a speech disorder can encounter in wanting to use their voice in a judgemental world: the frustration of sometimes not being able to say exactly what you want to say and therefore speaking less in speaking situations. And the educational and career opportunities are lost when doors remain closed to us, especially when employers advertise their jobs as requiring someone who speaks the language ‘fluently’.

While researchers still don’t definitively know what causes stuttering, emerging technologies are giving us new and promising pathways for improving the quality of life of people with speech disorders.

That’s why after years of researching and testing potential therapeutic uses of virtual reality, and with the support of the Google for Startups Cloud Program, I founded withVR on International Stuttering Awareness Day (October 22) in 2020. The mission of withVR is to prepare people with speech disorders for real-life speaking situations by utilizing the power of virtual reality.

Working through it

One of the difficulties in adapting to any disability is the opportunity to work through it in a safe and nonjudgmental environment. withVR provides a virtual space for individuals, in collaboration with their speech therapists, to practice real-world speaking scenarios in safe, controlled environments.

Imagine being able to raise your hand in class and give your opinion without hesitation, ordering the meal you want rather than something that’s easier to say, or sit across the table from an avatar of an employer and explain why you are the right person for your dream job. Then further customize the speaking situation and its surroundings to challenge yourself and be ready for anything. That’s what withVR offers individuals and their speech therapists.

Making VR come to life

To bring the withVR vision to life, we are developing applications using the Unity game engine on Google Cloud with integrated Firebase services including authentication, web hosting, storage, and database. It’s a powerful combination that’s enabled us to build industrial-strength applications that we’ve rapidly deployed on a global basis. Today we are already collaborating with 80+ labs, clinics, and hospitals in more than 20 different countries worldwide.

These organizations help us to test and refine a virtual reality application to support people in achieving their speech goals and build comfort through immersive VR experiences using easily available viewers like Google Cardboard

The application works in conjunction with a web app through which speech therapists configure customized VR scenarios for their patients to use. As no real-life speaking situation is ever exactly the same, customization of VR scenarios is vital. They can construct different scenes, create and script avatars, and through the Google Text-to-Speech API can even choose from hundreds of different voices in a variety of languages. This gives them the flexibility to create many unique speaking situations for their clients no matter where they are in the world.

Progress from the practice sessions is presented through a dashboard that provides therapists with a tool to monitor their clients’ progress and provide feedback and encouragement.

No shortage of support

My founder’s journey has been supported by many passionate people. The Google for Startups Cloud Program has been instrumental in helping us come so far in the first year, and we’ve only scratched the surface of what’s possible. There are many capabilities in Firebase and Google Cloud that we have yet to explore, and through the startup program I now have a Google Mentor who can help guide that exploration.

We also joined the 2Gether-International (2GI) Tech Cohort, which is supported by Google for Startups and is built for and run by entrepreneurs with disabilities. At the end of the 10-week cohort, we finished with a pitch competition, where I was one of six selected founders to pitch in just three minutes. I was very fortunate to win the Best Overall Pitch Award, gaining 10,000 USD in seed funding. This award not only highlights the potential of withVR, but also showcases that anyone can pitch their idea in a short amount of time no matter their difference.

Working with 2GI also gave me the opportunity to collaborate and learn from other founders who have disabilities. It’s a safe space where I don’t have to explain my everyday challenges and can focus on the all-important task of advancing the vision of withVR, while seeing how others use technology in their domain.

Building on a strong foundation

I’m amazed to look back and see what we’ve accomplished in just one year and humbled by the thousands of lives we’ve touched. Every day we receive valuable real-life feedback from people in the field—both clinicians and those with speech differences who benefit from VR therapy. That knowledge tells us that we are heading in the right direction and opening our eyes to new possibilities for where to take withVR. And inspiring us to keep moving ahead.

If you’d like to participate in testing or if you are speech therapist or researcher, please feel free to reach out to us. We’d love to show you how you can contribute to a world where anyone with a speech disorder can truly use their voice in any situation. If you’d like to take part, contact us at hello@withvr.app.

Groupe Dauphinoise is a agricultural cooperative whose 1,500 employees spend their days out of the office. The company transitioned to G Suite to improve the flexibility and collaboration of its staff--and then quickly realized the power of Google Cloud.

As a leading French agricultural cooperative, Groupe Dauphinoise places collaboration at the heart of its philosophy. Working with farmers in the Rhone-Alpes region, Groupe Dauphinoise takes on a diverse range of activities from agricultural production to research and development to running retail outlets.

As its operations expanded and strained its existing infrastructure, Groupe Dauphinoise saw the opportunity to upgrade its technology solutions and adopted G Suite, Chrome devices and ultimately Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

“We transitioned to G Suite to improve our staff’s collaboration. We quickly realized that as the company grew, we needed a new infrastructure. Based on our satisfaction with G Suite, we chose GCP. With Google, ‘any device, anytime, anywhere’ is not just a dream,” says Sylvain Claudel, Head of IT at Groupe Dauphinoise.

“We transitioned to G Suite to improve our staff’s collaboration. We quickly realized that as the company grew, we needed a new infrastructure. Based on our satisfaction with G Suite, we chose GCP. With Google, ‘any device, anytime, anywhere’ is not just a dream.”

Sylvain Claudel, Head of IT, Groupe Dauphinoise

Flexible workforce, stable infrastructure

Many of Groupe Dauphinoise’s 1,500 employees spend their days out of the office. Five years ago, with the help of Google partner GoWizYou, the company transitioned to G Suite to improve the flexibility and collaboration of its staff.

As Groupe Dauphinoise began to expand and collect more data, the company reached the limits of its on-premise infrastructure. Adding new storage was not a simple matter. Acquiring, configuring and synchronising new servers costs Groupe Dauphinoise time as well as money. In addition, with all its servers stored in a single room, security was a concern. Groupe Dauphinoise needed a new infrastructure.

Google Cloud Platform was the only solution in mind after Groupe Dauphinoise’s experience with G Suite and Chromebooks. Disruption was kept to a minimum thanks to Google’s licensing agreements with Microsoft products, allowing the company to migrate without affecting its operations.

After migrating its infrastructure to Compute Engine, Groupe Dauphinoise can let Google look after the security and maintenance. Cloud IAM makes it easy for Groupe Dauphinoise to hand out permissions to sensitive resources across a number of sites with maximum security and minimum fuss. The company placed its archives in Cloud Storage, while Cloud SQL allows it to continue to make use of its MySQL databases without disrupting the day to day business. Meanwhile, BigQuery provides Groupe Dauphinoise with the raw power to analyse large datasets quickly.

“Our company is growing and we have more and more data to collect and analyze like sales data, weather patterns or production numbers. With GCP, we have more than a single on-premise data store, so our disaster recovery plan is much more flexible. Compute Engine allows us to add more storage quickly and easily, without having to spend days synchronizing data and installing new servers. We have improved security and maintained the stability of our infrastructure while keeping costs down,” says Sylvain.

Safeguarding the present, looking to the future

With Google Cloud Platform, Groupe Dauphinoise has expanded and secured its infrastructure without sinking costs into on-premise servers or DevOps staff. Its investment in Chrome devices and adoption of G Suite mean that its mobile workforce can fully reap the benefits of a cloud-based infrastructure while dramatically cutting the cost of hardware. Meanwhile, working with a 200 million line table of sales data in Google BigQuery, the cooperative found that queries ran ten times faster than with its previous database provider. Groupe Dauphinoise is experimenting with Google BigQuery to expand its BI capabilities. Products like Google BigQuery help Groupe Dauphinoise grow its business, safe in the knowledge that its infrastructure is stable and secure.

“The amount of data we collect is growing very quickly. We need to break our rules and evolve from the mindset that we had with on-premise infrastructure and our old databases. We can now look at collecting more customer fidelity data, or big data for our farmers. With our data and infrastructure in Google’s care, we can concentrate on growing our customer base instead of our IT department!” says Sylvain.
