For over a decade, we’ve been investing in Canada to become a go-to cloud partner for organizations across the country. Whether they’re in financial services, media and entertainment, retail, telecommunications or the public sector, a rapidly growing number of organizations located or operating in Canada are choosing Google Cloud to help them build applications better and faster, store data, and deliver awesome experiences to their users, all on the cleanest cloud in the industry. To support this growing customer base, we’re excited to announce that the new Google Cloud region in Toronto is now open.
As you’d expect, we’re thrilled about this news, but we aren’t the only ones that have been looking forward to this launch. We asked some of our customers operating in Canada for their take on the upcoming cloud region. Here’s what they had to say:

Toronto joins 27 existing Google Cloud regions connected via our high-performance network, helping customers better serve their users and customers throughout the globe. In combination with our Montreal region, customers now benefit from improved business continuity planning with distributed, secure infrastructure needed to meet IT and business requirements for disaster recovery, while maintaining data sovereignty.

The new region launches with three zones, allowing organizations of all sizes and industries to distribute apps and storage to protect against service disruptions, and with our core portfolio of Google Cloud Platform products, including Compute Engine, App Engine, Google Kubernetes Engine, Bigtable, Spanner, and BigQuery.
We’re working to bring you new cloud products and capabilities in Canada, and our goal is to allow you to access those services quickly and easily—wherever you might be in the country. How L&T Financial Services Processes 95% of Motorcycle Loans in Less Than Two Minutes
L&T Financial Services is one of the largest lenders in India. India’s demonetization policy in recent years has led to a shift from cash transactions to digital payments. In 2016, the government withdrew 500 and 1000 rupee notes from circulation and encouraged a heavily cash-based population to deposit their canceled notes in banks. Financial institutions needed to pivot to a new way of doing business to stay competitive. L&T Financial Services modernized its IT infrastructure to keep up with changes and capture digital opportunities.
“Working capital is crucial to stimulate growth in rural communities. Our role as a lender is to provide access to funds. We don’t want to burden borrowers with the complexities of getting a loan. Towards this end, digitization is an important step,” says Dinanath Dubhashi, Managing Director and CEO at L&T Financial Services. “Google Cloud helps us streamline service delivery and identify the right customers. By offering the fastest processing time in the industry, we want to be the go-to lender for all customers.”
L&T Financial Services considered multiple cloud providers before choosing Google Cloud. According to Dinanath, Google Cloud understands both the need for businesses to move fast and the need for IT to modernize at different speeds. “We weren’t forced to abandon existing IT systems and migrate lock, stock, and barrel to Google Cloud on day one.”
L&T Financial Services engaged Google Cloud Professional Services to guide its digital transformation journey. The smooth migration from proof of concept to full-scale deployment on Google Cloud took a matter of months.

Digitizing the workforce with G Suite
The move to the cloud at L&T Financial Services started in 2017 when the company introduced G Suite to its 14,500 employees. The legacy email system was cumbersome to use, especially for frontline staff who need email access while they are on the road. Using Gmail, employees can connect with customers and co-workers from anywhere, on any device. Employees save time by scheduling meetings with Calendar, collaborating on Docs, and conducting video calls using Hangouts Meet.
Converting data into credit insights using BigQuery
Taking data intelligence one step further, L&T Financial Services adopts a responsible lending approach by applying algorithm-based data analytics to improve credit standards. Beyond traditional data such as credit score and credit payment history, the company also considers macro-economic indicators for risk audits. For example, a farmer’s ability to pay off the loan of his new tractor depends on a successful planting and harvest. So L&T Financial Services feeds long-term data into BigQuery and runs queries to predict loan defaults based on rainfall and crop yield.
New Capabilities in Cloud Asset Inventory Allow Better Visibility into Google Cloud Environments

Businesses that operate in complex cloud environments, large fleets, or sophisticated security operations all require visibility into their cloud assets in order to keep their teams nimble and their data secure. Cloud Asset Inventory (CAI) helps these teams understand their Google Cloud and Anthos environments by providing complete visibility, real-time monitoring, and powerful asset analysis capabilities. Today, Cloud Asset Inventory gets four new capabilities that help you understand your environment more clearly and easily than ever before.
New user interface eases asset and insight discovery
Cloud Asset Inventory console preview is now publicly available for GCP and Anthos customers. This preview provides insights into your cloud footprint, history and details of resource usage with powerful filtering and search capabilities. For example, you can view your global distribution of resources and policies, how your GCE VM footprint has been changing over time, as well as full metadata and change history for all your assets. The CAI console can be filtered at the organization, folder, or project-level, so each user can view the resources they have permissions for down to project level granularity.

Asset discovery and Datadog integration
A new asset list service in CAI provides quick and comprehensive asset discovery, including asset history, without needing to export the data to a storage destination. Datadog, a leading multi-cloud monitoring and security service provider, relies on deep integration with CAI for service and asset discovery. Datadog has been piloting and taking full advantage of the newly released asset list service. Datadog Product Manager, Steve Harrington, commented:
“Google’s new Cloud Asset Inventory API provides us with an immensely valuable, single source of truth for determining the resources present in a given GCP environment. Along with its rich metadata, this enables us to enhance multiple aspects of our integration with GCP, including streamlined metric collection and ingestion of custom labels. We plan to continue building around Cloud Asset Inventory in the future to improve existing features, and are envisioning ways it could help us provide entirely new insights to our customers.”
Answer “who can access what resources?”
Determining authoritative answers to security-related questions like “Who can read data from my storage bucket that contains PII?” or “Does a terminated employee still have any remaining access to my system?” can be difficult and time consuming. This is why access management and identity certification is one of the top security priorities for enterprises running workloads in the cloud. To help alleviate this challenge, the new Policy Analyzer capability in CAI thoroughly analyzes the relationship between IAM policies and resources. The analysis includes powerful and efficient group expansion, service account impersonation, conditional access analysis, resource expansion, and more. You can even export the results to a BigQuery table or Cloud Storage bucket for further analysis and record keeping. CAI’s enhanced UI makes it even easier for you to build your own flexible queries and quickly get to a comprehensive answer.

Create asset posture visibility
Cloud Asset Inventory now provides seven types of Asset Insights through the Active Assist platform. These new asset insights help proactively detect anomalies within your organization’s IAM policies, which may be opportunities to improve your security posture. The insights can be aggregated at the Organization, Folder or Project level.
The seven new Asset Insights include:
- External members in IAM policies.
- External users that impersonate your service accounts.
- External members as policy editors.
- External users who can view cloud storage buckets.
- Terminated users/groups that are still in IAM policies
- IAM policies containing all users or all authenticated users.
- Projects with only terminated users as owners.

Confidential Computing: Google Cloud Security, Project Zero and AMD Come Together to Secure Sensitive Workloads

At Google Cloud, we believe that the protection of our customers’ sensitive data is paramount, and encryption is a powerful mechanism to help achieve this goal. For years, we have supported encryption in transit when our customers ingest their data to bring it to the cloud. We’ve also long supported encryption at rest, for all customer content stored in Google Cloud.
To complete the full data protection lifecycle, we can protect customer data when it’s processed through our Confidential Computing portfolio. Confidential Computing products from Google Cloud protect data in use by performing computation in a hardware isolated environment that is encrypted with keys managed by the processor and unavailable to the operator. These isolated environments help prevent unauthorized access or modification of applications and data while in use, thereby increasing the security assurances for organizations that manage sensitive and regulated data in public cloud infrastructure.
Secure isolation has always been a critical component of our cloud infrastructure; with Confidential Computing, this isolation is cryptographically reinforced. Google Cloud’s Confidential Computing products leverage security components in AMD EPYC™ processors including AMD Secure Encrypted Virtualization (SEV) technology.
Building trust in Confidential Computing through industry collaboration
Part of our mission to bring Confidential Computing technology to more cloud workloads and services is to make sure that the hardware and software used to build these technologies is continuously reviewed and tested. We evaluate different attack vectors to help ensure Google Cloud Confidential Computing environments are protected against a broad range of attacks. As part of this evaluation, we recognize that the secure use of our services and the Internet ecosystem as a whole depends on interactions with applications, hardware, software, and services that Google doesn’t own or operate.
The Google Cloud Security team, Google Project Zero, and the AMD firmware and product security teams collaborated for several months to conduct a detailed review of the technology and firmware that powers AMD Confidential Computing technology. This review covered both Secure Encrypted Virtualization (SEV) capable CPUs, and the next generation of Secure Nested Paging (SEV-SNP) capable CPUs which protect confidential VMs against the hypervisor itself. The goal of this review was to work together and analyze the firmware and technologies AMD uses to help build Google Cloud’s Confidential Computing services to further build trust in these technologies.
This in-depth review focused on the implementation of the AMD secure processor in the third generation AMD EPYC processor family delivering SEV-SNP. SNP further improves the posture of confidential computing using technology that removes the hypervisor from the trust boundary of the guest, allowing customers to treat the Cloud Service Provider as another untrusted party. The review covered several AMD secure processor components and evaluated multiple different attack vectors. The collective group reviewed the design and source code implementation of SEV, wrote custom test code, and ran hardware security tests, attempting to identify any potential vulnerabilities that could affect this environment.

Working on this review, the security teams identified and confirmed potential issues of varying severity. AMD was diligent in fixing all applicable issues and now offers updated firmware through its OEM channels. Google Cloud’s AMD-based Confidential Computing solutions now include all the mitigations implemented during the security review.

We’re thankful to have partnered with Google Cloud and the Google Security teams to advance our security technology and help shape future Confidential Computing innovations to come.”
Reviewing trusted execution environments for security is difficult given the closed-source firmware and proprietary hardware components. This is why research and collaborations such as this are critical to improve the security of foundational components that support the broader Internet ecosystem. AMD and Google believe that transparency helps provide further assurance to customers adopting Confidential Computing, and to that end AMD is working toward a model of open source security firmware.
With the analysis now complete and the vulnerabilities addressed, the AMD and Google security teams agree that the AMD firmware which enables Confidential Computing solutions meets an elevated security bar for customers, as the firmware design updates mitigate several bug classes and offer a way to recover from vulnerabilities. More importantly, the review also found that Confidential VMs are protected against a broad range of attacks described in the review.
Google Cloud’s Confidential Computing portfolio
The Google Cloud Confidential VMs, Dataproc Confidential Compute, and Confidential GKE Nodes have enabled high levels of security and privacy to address our customers’ data protection needs without compromising usability, performance, and scale. Our mission is to make this technology ubiquitous across the cloud. Confidential VMs run on hosts with AMD EPYC processors which feature AMD Secure Encrypted Virtualization (SEV). Incorporating SEV into Confidential VMs provide benefits and features including:
Isolation: Memory encryption keys are generated by the AMD Secure Processor during VM creation and reside solely within the AMD Secure Processor. Other VM encryption keys such as for disk encryption can be generated and managed by an external key manager or in Google Cloud HSM. Both sets of these keys are not accessible by Google Cloud, offering strong isolation.
Attestation: Confidential VMs use Virtual Trusted Platform Module (vTPM) attestation. Every time a Confidential VM boots, a launch attestation report event is generated and posted to customer cloud logging, which gives administrators the opportunity to act as necessary.
Performance: Confidential Computing offers high performance for demanding computational tasks. Enabling Confidential VM has little or no impact on most workloads.
The future of Confidential Computing and secure platforms
While there are no absolutes in computer security, collaborative research efforts help uncover security vulnerabilities that can emerge in complex environments and help to prevent Confidential Computing solutions from threats today and into the future. Ultimately, this helps us increase levels of trust for customers.
We believe Confidential Computing is an industry-wide effort that is critical for securing sensitive workloads in the cloud and are grateful to AMD for their continued collaboration on this journey.

Google Cloud’s Autism Career Program to Nurture Neurodiverse Talent

My passion for neurodiversity began 10 years ago, when I became involved with Els for Autism, an organization that works with children and adults who have autism, as well as their families. At the time, I had a friend who was struggling to find resources for his son with autism. The foundation promotes acceptance and inclusion for people on the spectrum, helping them live independently and find jobs that harness their talents and skills. The organization’s focus on autism in the workplace resonated deeply with me, due to the rich experiences I had working with individuals with autism over the course of my career.
Approximately two percent of the population has autism, but it’s estimated this number is actually quite low as many individuals go undiagnosed. Of those that have been diagnosed, only 29% have had any sort of paid work in their lives. Personally, I find this tragic, because individuals with autism can be highly-functioning and contributing professionals in any organization. Too often, though, the interview process can pose challenges due to unconscious bias from a hiring manager or interviewer, for example, if the candidate doesn’t look an interviewer in the eyes or asks for additional time to complete a test. This bias often unintentionally marginalizes great candidates and means businesses miss out on valuable talent who can contribute and enrich the workplace.
Introducing Google Cloud’s Autism Career Program
It is in that spirit that I am excited to announce the launch of Google Cloud’s Autism Career Program, designed to hire and support more talented people with autism in the rapidly growing cloud industry.
We are working with experts from the Stanford Neurodiversity Project (part of the Stanford University School of Medicine), which provides consultation services to employers to advise on opportunities and success metrics for neurodiverse individuals in the workplace.
One key pillar of our program is to train up to 500 Google Cloud managers and others who are involved in hiring processes. Our goal is to empower these Googlers to work effectively and empathetically with autistic candidates and ensure Google’s onboarding processes are accessible and equitable. Stanford will also provide coaching to applicants, as well as ongoing support for them, their teammates and managers once they join the Google Cloud team.
We’re taking this approach to break down the barriers that candidates with autism most often face. In addition to bias, there may be challenges with how interviews are structured or conducted without the right tools. For these reasons, we will offer candidates in this program reasonable accommodations like extended interview time, providing questions in advance, or conducting the interview in writing in a Google Doc rather than verbally on a call. These accommodations don’t give those candidates an unfair advantage. It’s just the opposite: They remove an unfair disadvantage so candidates have a fair and equitable chance to compete for the job.
This program is just one example of Google Cloud’s commitment to inclusion, and it is an important step forward to building a more representative team and creating value for customers and stakeholders.
