Natural language understanding (NLU) is getting increasingly better at solving complex problems and these language breakthroughs are creating big waves in Artificial Intelligence. For example, new language models are enabling Everyday Robots to create more helpful robots that can break down user instructions and have even enabled people to generate imaginative visuals from complex text prompts

These leaps in NLU are powered by neural networks trained to understand human language. This technology has greatly advanced since the introduction of Google’s Transformer architecture in 2017 with the introduction of large models trained on massive amounts of data like GPT-3 and, even more recently, with GLaMLaMDA, and PaLM. This latest generation of models are called Large Language Models (LLMs) because of their sheer size and the vast volumes of data on which they are trained, and they can be applied to a range of tasks to create more powerful digital assistants, generate better search results and product recommendations, enforce smarter platform curation and safety features, and much more. 

For these reasons, we’re pleased to announce we’ve updated the Google Cloud Natural Language (NL) API with a new LLM-based model for Content Classification. 

With an expansive pre-trained classification taxonomy, the newest version of Content Classification from the Natural Language API leverages the latest Google research to improve customer use cases spanning actionable insights on user trends, to ad targeting, to content-based filtering. In this article, we’ll explore the NL API’s new capabilities, which are the first of many efforts we’ll be making to bring the power of LLMs to Google Cloud. 

How LLMs help machines understand human language 

As Google Cloud VP and General Manager of AI and Industry Solutions, Andrew Moore has argued, if computer systems become more conversant with natural human languages, they become a foundation for more sophisticated use cases, able to not only understand user intent but also create complex bespoke solutions. Google has been a leading research force in this space, with LLM projects like LaMDAPaLM and T5 contributing to the Cloud NL API’s improved v2 classification model.

Parsing language is a difficult AI task for machines due in part to the contextual and individual interpretation of words or phrases. The word “server,” for example, could refer to a computer, a restaurant employee, or a tennis player. To understand the word, a model needs to be trained around not only a basic definition but also the context and positioning of the word within a sentence or conversation and its evolving connotations. Because they process voluminous training data via Transformers, LLMs are well-suited to this type of work. 

Thanks to the integration of Google’s latest language modeling technology, and an updated and expanded training data set, the next generation of the Content Classification API not only has over 1,000 labels (up from around 600 previously), but now also supports 11 languages (with Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russia, Spanish, and Dutch joining previously-available English)—and does so with improved accuracy.

​​AI raises questions about the best way to build fairness, interpretability, privacy, and security into these new systems in order to benefit people and society. Indian Retailer Figures Optimizes Hyperlocal Delivery to Increase Customer Experience

Anyone who follows the Indian e-commerce scene knows that one of the largest challenges these companies face is hyperlocal delivery.

That was a problem facing Wellness Forever, a retail chain of pharmacies with 150-plus stores across India.

“Exactly a year ago, we started our journey of hyperlocal deliveries. This optimization was a big time challenge for us to understand how to optimize this,” Palani Subbiah, CTO, Wellness Forever.

The problem in front of Wellness Forever was to identify which customer could can be sold from which store, so that a delivery could be made within 90 minutes.

“We handle a large amount of customer data and we wanted to use insights to help and improve the customer satisfaction index,” says Subbiah.

To do that Wellness Forever leveraged Google  Big Query to run massive amount of data to come up with the operational insights. They also used Firebase and Google Maps.

“By 2021, we are going to have about 450 stores. Those stores are going to be not only a physical store, which is a digital store.

Google Cloud introduced Document AI to automate document processing and to streamline workflows with state-of-the-art machine learning models. With the deep neural networks, the models generalize the learning from seeing hundreds of thousands variations of the documents. But when information is missing or ambiguous on a document – like a missing address or entity name – a human may need to search for it…often on Google.

With Document AI, we are bringing the power of this “Google search” to help customers understand their documents. This means that the same Google knowledge graph technology that helps you find the name, address or phone number of your favorite restaurant can now enrich your document extraction with the right name, fully qualified address, and updated phone number.

Imagine a bank employee entering this to capture a customer’s income to qualify them for a loan. When extracting information from this payslip, what employer name should she key in? She might take the time to go into Google and find the right correct legal entity name; or she might just guess and move on, potentially creating data reconciliation headaches down the line.

With Document AI, there is a better way. Our native integration with the knowledge graph means that we can deliver both the specific text from the payslip as well as Google’s best understanding of the actual name of the company that operates at this address. This is an important step to translate from “what has been said” on a document to “what does it mean”.  By normalizing the value as you process millions of documents, you are improving accuracy and consistency at the beginning of the data processing workflow, making downstream integration, data analytics and business intelligence tasks at ease.

How EKG Enrichment Works

In a nutshell, Knowledge Graph is a knowledge base that uses a graph data model to integrate interlinked entities, including objects, events, processes or abstracted concepts. Google announced its Knowledge Graph in 2012 as a way to organize information from the Web and to enhance Search results. Different from Google Knowledge Graph, Cloud EKG (Enterprise Knowledge Graph) focuses on entities that are more relevant to enterprise customers, such as organization, product, people, locations, etc.

In EKG, every node is called an entity. Each entity in the graph represents an object, such as an organization. EKG aggregates all the information about a thing into a single entity, thus each entity represents a distinct and identifiable real world concept. The uniqueness of these entities in the graph is one of the reasons that make EKG useful. The edges between nodes are called relationships. When representing attributes, the relationships can be considered as properties, such as the name of a company, the price of a product, etc. When representing relationships, they connect entities in the graph, such as the CEO of a company, the seller of a product.

Entity linking, as its name suggests, is the task of assigning a unique identity to entities mentioned in text, images or videos. In the context of EKG, it connects the text mentions to entities in the graph. Under the hood, the recognition takes both the mention and its context information into consideration for linking to the best matching candidates in the graph.

Entity Enrichment, is essentially linking entities in EKG to documents, and using the attributes of linked entities to enrich the extracted information.  The entity linking on documents is based on the understanding of both documents and the entities in the graph. First the document parser annotates entity mentions, which provides semantic meanings to the content of the document. Then Entity Linking selects a list of entities from EKG based on the types of these mentions, and matches to the best entity by comparing the attributes found in the document with the the relationships of the selected entities.

How to leverage the enrichment result

Knowledge graph enrichment is a built-in feature for Lending DocAI Procurement DocAI and Contract DocAI today, and we are actively working on expanding it to cover more document types and parsers on the platform. To use the knowledge graph enriched values, look out for the entities fields under normalizedValue, returned by the API.
