Broadcom’s Journey to Simplified Compliance with Google Cloud’s Assured Workloads

Broadcom is a global technology leader that designs, develops, and supplies many semiconductor and infrastructure software solutions. Broadcom’s category-leading product portfolio serves critical markets including data center, networking, software, broadband, wireless, storage, and industrial sectors.
Our customers, many of whom operate in the federal public sector, need ready-made SaaS solutions to secure their infrastructure while meeting compliance requirements. As head of platform engineering for Broadcom and its subsidiaries, my team is responsible for designing, testing, and building the common orchestration platform and services for our federal customers.
Since early 2021, we’ve partnered with Google Cloud to deliver best-in-class cloud solutions for our multinational customers with speed, scale and efficiency, which earned us the Google Cloud Customer of the Year Award. When it came to creating plug-and-play security and compliance solutions for federal organizations in the United States, we turned to Assured Workloads.
Simplifying the path to compliance
Assured Workloads provides out-of-the-box capabilities that allow us to easily create and maintain controlled environments that address security and compliance needs across different verticals and sectors. This includes enforcement of data residency, administrative and personnel controls, and managing encryption keys.
For example, in the United States, federal government agencies need to use solutions that comply with FedRAMP, the government-wide standard for cloud computing security, while the Department of Defense (DoD) needs to comply with Impact Level (IL) standards. Assured Workloads helps us create solutions with built-in guardrails to ensure our customers automatically operate within whichever standard applies.
Additionally, Assured Workloads guarantees that only personnel with the necessary clearance and permissions have access to information, and it offers integrated cryptographic control over data, including customer-managed encryption keys based on the chosen compliance program.
As a result of using Assured Workloads, our Symantec Security suite can provide a comprehensive set of security services that are being certified for FedRAMP. These include Web Security Service, Data Loss Prevention, Cloud Access Security Broker, and Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP).
We also offer our enterprise software products as services through Google Cloud. Rally Software, our enterprise agility tool, and Clarity PPM, our project and portfolio management tool, are already certified for FedRAMP. Additionally Clarity PPM is undergoing certification for IL4 compliance for our DoD clients.
Sophisticated solutions for a secure future
Given the intricate nature of securing the cloud environment and the business processes it handles, integrating Assured Workloads into our service offering has been simple and streamlined. Many of our services already run on Google Cloud, using Google Kubernetes Engine and Google Compute Engine, and since those Google Cloud services can be configured for all programs in an Assured Workloads environment, we were able to provide solutions to federal agencies without making significant changes to our deployment or configurations. This has helped save enormous engineering effort by avoiding a customized one-off effort to manage a Federal environment.
Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) is one of the critical services in our environment, and Google Cloud releases many new GKE capabilities each year. Assured Workloads allows us to benefit from all the latest GKE innovations that come through automatic updates, maintaining parity with the commercial cloud without compromising on security and compliance requirements.
Compliance is a must-have for our federal clients, and our duty as providers of security and software services is to supply them with easy-to-use, efficient solutions they can trust. With the power of Assured Workloads streamlining our infrastructure software solutions hosted in Google Cloud, we can better support our regulated customers and further grow our software and security service businesses.
Announcing New, Faster Search and Investigative Experience in Chronicle Security Operations

In cybersecurity, speed matters. Whether a security analyst is trying to understand the details of an alert that was triggered by an indicator of compromise (IoC), or find additional context for a suspicious asset, speed is often the critical factor that will help thwart a cyberattack before threat actors are able to inflict damage.
With speed in mind, we are pleased to announce the general availability of our new investigative experience in Chronicle Security Operations. We are continuing to deliver on our mission to bring the power of Google to security operations and are raising the bar for search and the investigative experience in the SOC.
With this release, SecOps teams will be able to harness Chronicle’s lightning-fast search across any form of structured data. Additionally, the new investigation experience can provide greater flexibility to pivot and drill-down when conducting complex, open-ended threat investigations and surface insights quickly and easily.
Our Unified Data Model (UDM) schema, with its built-in flexibility that can effectively handle a wide variety of security related events, is at the heart of Chronicle’s powerful search. We have scaled this capability by optimizing query responses across structured data. Additionally, analysts can investigate large datasets and build complex queries with a new and intuitive user experience. With user personalization enhancements, analysts can quickly access saved searches and top queries in their environment to improve routine SOC workflows.
With the new investigative experience, security teams can:
- Drive faster threat understanding with an interactive event results timeline that helps eliminate unnecessary long wait times by streaming results as they are processed to quickly begin threat analysis
- Use enhanced context and operationalize relevant data for threat analysis with one-click filter-to-query conversion
- Personalize the analyst experience with saved search and search history functions for quicker analyst knowledge recall
- Power threat investigation and hunting with a new, improved, highly performant UDM search
Let’s look at an example of how to use the reimagined investigative experience and our new broader, faster search.
In our use-case, a security analyst is investigating a curated detection alert for potentially suspicious behavior on a Windows environment. Additionally, there is a low prevalence domain from host “win-dc-01” with ip “10.166.0.3”. To investigate further, let’s open the UDM Search page and construct a query containing the host and IP information along with destination information of the domain the host was contacting (edge.microsoft.com). Over 70,000 events stream into the investigation interface providing the analyst an immediate picture of data surrounding their alert.

The new interactive events timeline can provide a clear picture of event trends over time with key statistical data which can be easily filtered. Additionally, with the new quick filters, the analyst is able to easily filter out hosts that are known-good to get pertinent information about the domain.

Analyzing value aggregations present in the filter panel, automatically generated by Chronicle, enables analysts to domain values of highest interest, and quickly determine that approximately 800 events were present in the last week that related to edge.microsoft.com URL. Since Microsoft Edge is disallowed in the organization, there should not be any outbound traffic to this type of destination.

As a final step before orchestrating a response in Chronicle SOAR’s case management, the analyst can save their search to quickly recall the steps they took in the future for related investigations.

We have already seen our customers use these new capabilities in preview to build new use cases, accelerate existing threat hunting workflows, and drive faster threat response. We will continue our mission to bring Google speed, scale, and intelligence to the investigative experience, expediting “time to aha” for security analysts, and driving better, faster responses.

Datashare for Financial Services: Securing the Publishers and Consumers’ Access to Market Data

Access to the cloud has advanced the distribution and consumption of financial information on a global scale. In parallel, the global financial data landscape has been transformed by an influx of alternative data sources, including social media, meteorological data, satellite imagery, and other data. Exchanges and market data providers now find they need to include these new datasets to enrich their products and compete, which has meant they now must consider cloud-based models to keep up with the demands of their customers who expect easy, quick, flexible and cost-efficient ways to consume market data.
To address these needs, today we’re announcing the general availability of Datashare for financial services, a new Google Cloud solution that brings together the entire capital markets ecosystem—data publishers, and data consumers—to exchange market data securely and easily.
Datashare helps organize third-party financial information, making it accessible and useful to market data publishers and data consumers. We open-sourced the entire Datashare solution so market data publishers can now onboard their licensed datasets to Google Cloud securely, quickly and easily, while data consumers can consume that data as a service in tools of their preference, such as BigQuery.

Three ways to distribute and consume your data
Batch data delivery
Datashare provides a batch data delivery mechanism for data publishers to deliver their reference data, historical tick data, alternative market data sources and more via BigQuery, reducing the administrative burden on data consumers to extract insights from data.
Real-time data streaming delivery
By using this event-based data delivery channel for rapidly changing instrument prices, tick data, orders, news and others via Pub/Sub, data consumers can reliably process individual messages or rewind to a point in time to replay a prior market scenario and test model changes.
Monetizing licensed datasets
Market data publishers can onboard their licensed datasets to Google Cloud and make them available via a one-stop-shop on Google Cloud Marketplace, enabling a new sales channel to expand market reach.
Reference architecture
Check out the diagram below to see how you can share your batch and real-time data directly to your Google Cloud customers with BigQuery and Pub/Sub.

As you can see in the above reference architecture, both publishers and consumers can derive several benefits from the solution:
Benefits for data publishers
- You no longer have to maintain your own delivery and licensing infrastructure.
- You can easily package and deliver granular data products and experiments with SQL.
- You can have a solution that scales with your business as data volumes and number of customers grow.
Benefits for data consumers
- Your data is ready for analysis and machine learning (ML)— you no longer have to maintain extract, transform, and load (ETL) pipelines to load files and transform data.
- You can avoid the expense and burden of maintaining multiple copies of large data files.
- You can be more targeted with consumption of data using BigQuery queries, improving performance, and compliance, and reducing cost.
Accessing the datasets
Google Cloud has been working with multiple industry firms on innovating in the market data space. By using Datashare for publishing, data publishers can make their entire datasets available on Google Cloud. Early adopters of Datashare include firms such as OneTick and Accern. OneTick’s datasets include reference and historical futures data (that can be accessed in our console with your login). Accern’s datasets include alternative data such as market sentiment and credit analysis data (that can be accessed in our console with your login).
To make it more helpful, we partnered with Accern to create a hypothetical scenario to describe the data acquisition and analytics process step-by-step.
Accern use case
As a sustainability analyst, you require an economic, social and governance (ESG) dataset to determine which sector is the most widely covered ESG sector by analysts, and to also identify the sector with the lowest ESG sentiment score. Now, you can discover and acquire an ESG dataset in Google Cloud.
Step 1. Navigate to the Financial Services solutions page in the Google Cloud console:

Step 2. Click a dataset, for example Accern AI-Generated ESG Insights, then review the overview details, plans and pricing, documentation and support information. To view the available pricing tiers, click ‘View All Plans’. Once you’ve decided on a tier that you would like to subscribe to, click ‘Select’, choose a billing account and review and accept the terms of service to complete the subscription. Once the steps are complete, click ‘Subscribe’ at the bottom. An overlay window will appear, click ‘Register with Accern’ to activate and complete the subscription.


Step 3. Once activation is complete, you’ll be directed to the Datashare ‘My Products’ screen. Voila! You are now subscribed to Accern’s ESG Scores dataset and can access it in your Google Cloud instance using BigQuery. To access the data, click the hour glass icon on the corresponding ‘My Products’ record that you just purchased. An overlay will present you with the details on the dataset and/or table. Click the ‘Navigate to Table’ button to navigate through to the BigQuery console.



Step 4. Now that you have access and are in the BigQuery console, it’s time to generate data insights.
For this example, we’ve eliminated the company identifying information that is included as part of the subscription and aggregated company ESG in a view where each row represents a day, an industry sector, a specific identified ‘ESG Issues’ (event_group and event) and the respective ‘ESG Sentiment’ per issue.

For example, row 1 indicates that within the ‘Healthcare’ sector, there was a ‘Social – Civil Society’ issue identified and it had a negative ESG sentiment score of -15.35.
Step 5. Generate a report by exporting it to Data Studio to build visualizations and conduct additional analysis on the ESG data.

Select ‘Export’ and ‘Explore with Data Studio’.
Step 6. Build a simple/basic report.
Now that the ESG data appears in Data Studio, you can start by building a simple chart to help you understand which industry sectors have the highest volume of discussions around ESG and the overall ESG Sentiment per industry sector.
To build the chart:
- Select the chart type ‘Table’.
- Include
Entity_Sectoras your dimension to aggregate results by ‘Industry Sector.’ - Include
Signal_IDas a measure to count the number of ESG passages identified per ‘Industry Sector.’ - Include
AVG(Event_Sentiment)as a measure to display the overall ESG Sentiment per ‘Industry Sector’ across ESG Issues.

You can see sectors that are most discussed when it comes to ESG related topics and their corresponding ‘ESG Sentiment’ scores.
Step 7. Build your final report in Data Studio.
As a next step you can further drill into the data to understand ESG data specific to each ‘Industry Sector’ and identify positive and negative ESG practices.

How to Detect and Eliminate New Cloud Security Threats: Tips for Your Security Teams

Why do we keep talking about security all the time? Why hasn’t anyone just gone and fixed it?
You’ve probably heard these questions, whether from your leadership, or a board member or just from friends. Then you labor at explaining why security in the cloud is so complex and challenging, the constant arms race, and eventually, their eyes glaze over. But you’re right: It is complex, and it can be hard.
As a security leader today, you likely spend a lot of your time focused on getting information: what’s going on, what new vulnerability just surfaced, what threats are present in your environment, and how to remediate them. And you probably already have a few dozen tools in place to measure, analyze, collect, and search through your data.
Right now, with your set of existing tools, you hopefully have a good sense of your on-prem systems and your overall attack surface. But across all those datasets, you’re juggling incongruous access patterns, stale data, and cluttered information coming from disparate tools—it’s not organized by topic, risk, or project. So unifying and rectifying the data sources, to really give you a full picture, just doesn’t happen.
Then you add cloud systems to the mix, and it’s a whole ‘nother ball of wax. We wanted to detail a few security features we’ve developed—most recently Event Threat Detection, available today in beta—and highlight some information that can help you reduce the complexity of your organization’s security, and improve your security posture.
Gain visibility and control, and prevent threats
With Cloud Security Command Center (Cloud SCC), Google brings a flexible platform to give you wide visibility and rapid response capabilities. Beyond just risk and vulnerability management, Cloud SCC focuses on active defense, showing you threats that have been detected and the path to greater holistic security in your cloud resources.
It integrates with existing partner security solutions you already use and Google Cloud security tools. And its API is accessible to you and your vendors, so any additional data is easy to integrate.
The model above is a centralized dashboard for threat prevention, detection, and response, with views of your current state that you can change based on your needs. For example, you can focus on assets to get a comprehensive list of every firewall, network, disk, bucket, and so on in your organization.
You can also orient your view based on findings (results) of what’s wrong in your Google Cloud Platform (GCP) environment. We recently launched the Vulnerabilities dashboard to show findings from Security Health Analytics. It’s an integrated security product that helps you identify misconfigurations and compliance violations in your GCP resources and take action.
Reduce threat exposure with Event Threat Detection
Reducing your exposure to threats goes hand-in-hand with being able to respond quickly to those threats that are present in your environment. Today, we’re excited to announce the beta of Event Threat Detection, a security product that integrates into Cloud SCC, and was inspired by how Google protects itself. We wanted to extend our scale and threat intelligence to help you protect your environment and improve your security posture.
Event Threat Detection helps you detect threats in your logs and send high-risk threats to your SIEM (Security Information and Event Management system) for further investigation. It also can help you save time and money by focusing your attention on the most worrisome cloud-based threats.
Due to the growth in cloud computing, we’ve seen an increase in the number of customers running VPC Flow logs, Cloud DNS logs, Cloud Audit logs, and syslog delivered via the fluentd agent on GCP. Event Threat Detection uses Google’s threat intelligence to surface threats present in these logs, including anomalous IAM grants, malware, cryptomining, outgoing DDoS, and brute-force SSH.
When Event Threat Detection finds a threat in your logs, it shows up as a finding on the Cloud SCC dashboard. If you need to further analyze any of these threats, you can send them to your SIEM, saving time and money because Event Threat Detection has already determined the high-risk logs you need to investigate further.
Event Threat Detection integrates with Cloud Functions to make it easier for you to export findings to your SIEM of choice. You can also use Cloud Functions to automate responses and changes to Event Threat Detection findings. See the video below for more information.
Respond to threats
Once threats have been detected, the final step is, obviously, responding to them. To help speed up your response game, you can set up automated actions for when threats are detected. When Cloud SCC detects an anomaly, or an active threat, you can have it change a VM configuration, perhaps cutting the VM off from other parts of your network.
You can also change firewall rules automatically. Using these events to trigger Cloud Functions, you can set up any response you like, fully automated. At the same time, you can send incident metrics and data to Stackdriver or your own SIEM to make sure your incident response team has everything they need.
Together, these features give you the power to structure and organize the data you gather, which is key to making cloud security work for large, mature organizations. Cloud SCC lets you create tags for items to assist with incident response or project-based inquiry, and to aid in custom dashboard creation. The constant goal: give you the information you need quickly, so you can take the necessary action.
