Google's Private Service Connect is now available for customers to create private and secure connections from their cloud networks to services like Cloud Storage or Cloud Bigtable and third-party services like Elastic, MongoDB or Snowflake!

At Google Cloud, we believe in making it simple and secure to consume services whether they’re from Google, a third party or customer-owned. With Private Service Connect, we have adopted a service-centric approach to our network that abstracts the underlying networking infrastructure. And today, we are announcing Private Service Connect is generally available in all Google Cloud regions.

Private Service Connect allows you to create private and secure connections from your cloud networks to services like Cloud Storage or Cloud Bigtable and third-party services like Elastic, MongoDB or Snowflake. It creates service endpoints in your VPCs that provide private connectivity and policy enforcement, allowing you to easily connect to services across different networks and organizations.

Customers told us they want to consume services faster while making sure that the connectivity is private and secure. In the past, achieving this was a challenge: networking teams had to negotiate IP address blocks, mutually agree on policies and coordinate as applications evolved to newer versions. With Private Service Connect, you can delegate the consumption and delivery of services to different teams without having to coordinate between teams.

How it works

Private Service Connect makes it easy to consume services by leveraging service endpoints that are locally managed. The services can be in different projects or managed by different organizations. Access to the service is controlled by strict governance and IAM policies. Application teams and developers can focus on delivering their services easily by exposing their ‘service attachment’. No more worrying about networking constructs—Private Service Connect takes care of connecting to the service on the Google backbone for them.  

Benefits to our partners

Being able to consume services from a variety of software vendors and service providers makes it possible for enterprises to innovate faster. For that, developers need to be able to compose services from third-party vendors, Google managed services, as well as their own services. To help, third-party partners can use Private Service Connect to deliver multi-tenant services securely and at massive scale, and make the connectivity to their services appear as if they are running on the enterprises’ network. Private Service Connect will also integrate with Service Directory to register many producer services, making service consumption even simpler.

Google invests nearly one billion euros on Germany's digital infrastructure and sustainable cloud projects to support the growing demand from its businesses. The investments will secure the country's digital future and strengthen its tech innovation.

In September 2001, the first-ever German Google employee switched on their computer in Hamburg. Since then, we’ve grown to more than 2,500 employees in four offices across Germany. Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Munich have long been our home, and we continue to invest in the growth of the local economy.

Today, 20 years after the start of “Google Germany”, we are pleased to present one of our most important investment programs to date in this country. With the expansion of our Cloud Region in Frankfurt in a new Google-owned Hanau facility, a new Google Cloud region in Berlin-Brandenburg, and a broad investment plan in renewable energy, our commitment is clear: Google is investing in Germany’s potential and supporting the transition to a digital and sustainable economy. Between now (2021) and 2030, this investment in digital infrastructure and clean energy will total approximately 1 billion euros.

Expanding our Frankfurt cloud region to support growing demand from German businesses and organizations

In Hanau, only 20 kilometers from the DE-CIX Internet hub in Frankfurt, Google is proud to be nearing completion of an additional cloud facility that will be fully operational in 2022. This expansion of our existing Frankfurt Google Cloud region will serve the growing demand for Google Cloud services in Germany.

The 4-story building is ​​10,000 square meters and was sustainably constructed with energy efficient infrastructure and adherence to our circular economy model for waste. The symbolic handover of the keys from developer NDC-Garbe, together with local government officials, took place on site yesterday. 

A new cloud region in Berlin-Brandenburg

In addition to the Hanau expansion of our Google Cloud region in Frankfurt, we are pleased to announce that a new Google Cloud region will be located in Berlin-Brandenburg, further extending our ability to meet growing demand for cloud services in the country. When open, this will be our second Google Cloud region in Germany, providing enterprise customers with faster access to secure infrastructure, smart analytics tools and an open platform. Designed and dedicated to providing enterprise services and products for Google Cloud customers of all sizes and industries in Germany, the Berlin-Brandenburg region will have three zones to protect against service disruptions and join the existing network of 27 Google Cloud regions connected via our high-performance network. 

One of the cleanest clouds in the industry becomes even cleaner

Since 2017, Google has matched 100% of our global, annual electricity use with renewable energyLast year, we set out to run our business on carbon-free energy everywhere and at all times by 2030, enabling us to offer cloud customers one of the cleanest clouds in the industry, while helping Europe achieve its ambitious climate goals.

Today, we’re excited to announce that ENGIE Deutschland has been selected as Google’s carbon-free energy supplier in Germany. Under the terms of the agreement, ENGIE will assemble and develop, on Google’s behalf, a 140 megawatt (MW) carbon-free energy portfolio in Germany that has the ability to flex and grow with us as our needs change. This includes a new 39MW solar Photovoltaic system, and 22 wind parks in five federal states that will see their lives extended so they continue to produce electricity instead of being dismantled. This portfolio will ensure that the energy delivered to Google’s German facilities will be nearly 80% carbon-free by 2022 when measured on an hourly basis. This is a first but important step on Google’s journey to reach our goal of full electricity decarbonization by 2030. 

This is the first energy supply of its kind in Europe, with a focus on sourcing carbon-free energy for every hour of Google’s operations. Not only will this new agreement draw the roadmap for the industry and more 24/7 carbon-free energy contracts in Europe, but it provides our cloud customers with two more regions where they can lower their carbon footprint. And importantly, by working with our energy suppliers to transform how clean energy is delivered to customers, Google is supporting the broader decarbonization of the German electricity grid.

New Enterprise Capabilities and Changes to Cloud Spanner Reduces Cost of Running Workloads by 90 Percent

To enable customers to move their work to Cloud Spanner, Google Cloud will soon announce granular instance sizing that will bring down the cost of running workloads by 90 percent. Read how granular instance sizing in Spanner would help enterprises.

Customers love Cloud Spanner because it gives them the benefits of relational semantics and SQL while also delivering the scale and availability of non-relational databases. Many of these customers want to move even more of their work to Spanner, and have requested smaller instance sizes to support development, testing and small production workloads. We’re happy to announce that they’ll soon get what they asked for: more granular instance sizing is coming to Spanner.

Granular instance sizing will be available in Public Preview soon. With this feature, you can run workloads on Spanner at as low as 1/10th the cost of regular instances, equating to approximately $65/month.

In addition, we are launching new enterprise capabilities to break down operational silos for real-time insights and provide greater database observability to developers: 

  • Datastream, now in public preview, is a change data capture (CDC) service that allows enterprises to synchronize data across heterogeneous databases and applications. With Spanner support in Datastream, users will be able to stream data from MySQL or Oracle to Spanner reliably and with minimal latency. 
  • BigQuery federation to Spanner (coming soon) lets users query transactional data residing in Spanner, from BigQuery, without moving or copying data. 
  • Key Visualizer, available now in public preview, provides interactive monitoring so developers can quickly identify trends and usage patterns in Spanner. 

Democratizing access with more granular instance sizing 

Today, customers provision Spanner instances by specifying the number of nodes they need to run their workloads. Each node can provide up to 10,000 queries per second (QPS) of reads or 2,000 QPS of writes (writing single rows at 1 KB of data per row) and 2 TB of storage. A Spanner node is replicated across 3 zones for regional instances, and 5 or more zones for multi-regional instances. The choice of node count determines the amount of serving and storage resources that are available to the databases in a given instance. 

Historically, the most granular unit for provisioning resources on Spanner has been one node. To enable more granular control, we are introducing Processing Units (PUs); one Spanner node is equal to 1,000 PUs. Customers can now provision in batches of 100 PUs, and get a proportionate amount of compute and storage resources. This will allow teams to run smaller workloads on Spanner at much lower cost. With this feature, customers can start at 100 PUs and scale up as needed in batches of 100 PUs, to up to 1,000 PUs (1 node), all with zero downtime. Subsequently, customers can continue to scale up by adding more nodes, just like what they do today. Customers do have the choice of using either PUs or nodes to provision resources within workloads, when those workloads occupy multiple nodes of capacity. 

To illustrate with an example, let’s say a game developer creates a Spanner instance called “baseball-game” in us-central1, with 100 PU compute capacity at $65/month price.

As you can see below, proportional maximum storage of 205 GB is assigned to the 100 PU instance.

Once the game starts becoming popular and resource demands increase, the user edits the instance to increase the compute capacity to 500 PUs with proportional maximum 1 TB of storage.

The game grows in popularity, and the gaming company prepares to launch a much-awaited capability in the game. Anticipating a sharp increase in usage at launch day, the game developers increase the compute capacity to 3,000 PUs. Compute capacity assigned to the instance over a period of time can be viewed in Cloud Monitoring graphs:

Breaking down operational silos with Datastream CDC and BigQuery federation

BigQuery Federation. BigQuery has made analytics easy by bringing together data from multiple sources for seamless analysis. Soon you’ll also be able to analyze data in Spanner directly in BigQuery. With  Spanner’s BigQuery federation, you’ll be able to instantly query data residing in Spanner in real-time without moving or copying the data. Simply set up the Spanner as an external data source in BigQuery, as shown below.

Change Data Capture ingest. Now in public preview, Datastream lets you stream change data into Google Cloud from MySQL and Oracle databases. As of today, you can ingest this change data directly into Spanner using a built-in Dataflow template. This lets you migrate data from MySQL and Oracle databases into Spanner in near-real time.

Understanding performance and resource usage with Key Visualizer

Key Visualizer is a new interactive monitoring tool that lets developers and administrators analyze usage patterns in Spanner. It reveals trends and outliers in key performance and resource metrics for databases of any size, helping to optimize queries and reduce infrastructure costs. Designed for performance tuning and instance sizing, Key Visualizer is available today in public preview in the web-based Cloud Console for all Spanner databases at no additional cost.
