—Ashish Shekhar, Head of Technology – Enterprise Analytics & Applied AI, ANZ
Dataplex is built for distributed data. We are starting with data stored in Google Cloud Storage and BigQuery, with support for other data sources coming soon. It provides a workflow-driven experience helping you build an open data platform and make data easily accessible to your end users while ensuring your policies and best practices are consistently enforced.
Organizing and curating your data
One of the core tenets of Dataplex is letting you organize and manage your data in a way that makes sense for your business, without data movement or duplication. For that, we are providing logical constructs like lakes, data zones and assets. Those constructs enable you to abstract away the underlying storage systems and become the foundation for setting policies around data access, security, lifecycle management, and so on.
For example, you can create a lake per department within your organization (Retail, Sales, Finance, etc.) and create data zones that map to data readiness and usage (landing, raw, curated_data_analytics, curated_data_science, etc.).
Once you have your lakes and zones setup, you can now attach data to these zones as assets. You can add data from different types of storage (e.g. GCS Bucket and BigQuery dataset) under the same zone. You can also attach data across multiple projects under the same zone.

You can ingest data into your lakes and zones using the tools of your choice including services such as Dataflow, Data Fusion, Dataproc, Pub/Sub or choose from one of our partner products. Dataplex provides built-in 1-click templates for common data management tasks.
Securing your data
Dataplex enables you to define and enforce consistent policies across your data, irrespective of where it physically resides. Data owners can easily set up policies for specific data domains based on business needs, without thinking about where the data is stored while data stewards get global visibility into governance policies and permissions across their data.
You can apply security and governance policies for your entire lake, a specific zone, or an asset. Dataplex maps the policies to the underlying storage and pushes down permissions to the storage layer to provide end-to-end secure data access. Additionally, you can secure not just data but also related artifacts like notebooks, scripts, and models using the same set of access policies.
Making high quality data available for analytics and data science
One of the biggest differentiators for Dataplex is our data intelligence capabilities using Google’s best in class AI/ML technologies. As you bring the data under management, Dataplex will automatically harvest the metadata for both structured and unstructured data, with built-in data quality checks. All of the metadata is automatically registered in a unified metastore, and made available for search and discovery. It is also published to Bigquery, Dataproc Metastore, and Data Catalog – ensuring that you have the same consistent data context and access across your tools.
For example, when you write parquet files to a Google Cloud Storage bucket – Dataplex will automatically extract metadata of these files, detect a tabular schema, including hive-style partitions, run data quality checks, and make this data queryable in BigQuery as an external table and from any open source or partner application – with the same consistent security and access policies you defined at the logical data layer.
Your data scientists and analysts now have secured access to this data that meets your quality bar and governance rules via the tools of their choice, without needing any additional processing.

One-click access to collaborative analytics
Dataplex provides fully managed, one-click analytics environments enabling you to use the power of Apache Spark and BigQuery with support for other engines coming in the future.
As data administrators, you now have the flexibility to pre-configure these environments with the right cost and financial governance measures without taking on the overhead of managing and maintaining the infrastructure required to power these environments. You can easily configure different environments for different types of workloads and share it with multiple users using their IAM credentials. Dataplex manages the provisioning, monitoring, scaling, and shutdown of these environments.
As data scientists, analysts, and engineers, you now have a turn-key experience to run your analysis using notebooks and a SQL workbench. You can search for notebooks and scripts alongside data, save and share your work with other users, and schedule your notebooks or scripts for recurring workloads – all using the same integrated experience within Dataplex.

Building an open platform with industry leaders
We are partnering with industry leaders such as Accenture, Collibra, Confluent, Informatica, HCL, Starburst, NVIDIA, Trifacta, and others to build an open platform to power analytics at scale. Our partners are excited about the capabilities that Dataplex will provide:
“Collibra is excited to partner with Dataplex to provide data governance and data quality for consistent controls across distributed data. Pairing Collibra’s multi-cloud and hybrid solution with Dataplex allows enterprises to securely open up access to more, higher quality data for users and analytics using a single unified view.”
—Jim Cushman, Chief Product Officer, Collibra
“Dataplex builds on Google Cloud’s commitment to open source by integrating with Apache Kafka®, a leading open source platform for event streaming. We at Confluent, the platform for data in motion that completes Apache Kafka® to be enterprise-ready, are excited to partner with Dataplex to enable customers to bring together distributed, real-time data and build a unified data fabric for end to end analytics.”
—Paul Mac Farland, VP, Head of Customer Solutions and Innovation, Confluent

Pizza purveyor Domino’s is dominating delivery sales around the world. Today, Domino’s is the most popular pizza delivery chain operating in the U.K., the Republic of Ireland, Germany, and Switzerland—and sales just keep growing.
In these regions in 2014, Domino’s sold 76 million pizzas and generated £766.6 million (1.02 billion USD) in revenue — a 14.6% increase from the previous year.
In the U.K. and Ireland, online sales are increasing 30% year over year and currently account for almost 70% of all sales. Notably, 44% of those online sales are now made via mobile devices.
Multi-Device Purchasing Means Fresh Opportunities
Domino’s is a consistent digital innovator. Much of the company’s success stems from early investments in ecommerce and mobile commerce platforms that help people easily purchase pizzas from different devices.
Domino’s sold its first pizza online in 1999. It then launched an iPhone app in 2010, quickly followed by apps for Android and iPad in 2011, and a Windows app in 2012. By late 2014, Domino’s customers could even order pizzas from Xboxes.
The Domino’s marketing team had assembled a variety of tools to measure marketing performance, keeping pace with the company’s rapid innovations. Unfortunately, measuring siloed analytics and channel-focused tools restricted the team’s ability to fully understand all of the different paths to purchase.

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai has compared the potential impact of artificial intelligence (AI) to the impact of electricity—so it may be no surprise that at Google Cloud, we expect to see increased AI and machine learning (ML) momentum across the spectrum of users and use cases.
Some of the momentum is more foundational, such as the hundreds of academic citations that Google AI researchers earn each year, or products like Google Cloud Vertex AI accelerating ML development and experimentation by 5x, with 80% fewer lines of code required. Some are more concrete, like mortgage servicer Mr. Cooper using Google Cloud Document AI to process documents 75% faster with 40% cost savings; Ford leveraging Google Cloud AI services for predictive maintenance and other manufacturing modernizations; and customers across a wide range of industries deploying ML platforms atop Google Cloud.
Together, these proof points reflect our belief that AI is for everyone, and that it should be easy to harness in workflows of all kinds and for people of all levels of technical expertise. We see our customers’ accomplishments as validation of this philosophy and a sign that we are taking away the right things from our conversations with business leaders. Likewise, we see validation in recognition from analysts, which recently includes Google being named a Leader by
Gartner® in the 2022 Magic Quadrant™ for Cloud AI Developer Services report
Forrester in the Forrester Wave™: AI Infrastructure, Q4 2021 report, the Forrester Wave™: Document-Oriented Text Analytics Platforms, Q2 2022 report, and The Forrester Wave™: People-Oriented Text Analytics Platforms, Q2 2022 report
In June, we talked about four pillars that guide our approach to creating products for MLOps and to accelerate development of ML models and their deployment into product. In this article, we’ll look more broadly at our AI and ML philosophy, and what it means to create “AI for everyone.”
AI should be for everyone
One of the pillars we discussed in June was “meeting users where they are,” and this idea extends far beyond products for data scientists. Technical expertise should not be a barrier to implementing AI—otherwise, use cases where AI can help will languish without modernization, and enterprises without well-developed AI practices will risk falling behind their competitors.
To this end, we focus on creating AI and ML services for all kinds of users, e.g.:
- DocumentAI, Contact Center AI, and other solutions that inject AI and ML into business workflows without imposing heavy technical requirements or retraining on users;
- Pre-trained APIs, ranging from Speech to Fleet Optimization, that let developers leverage pre-trained ML models and free them from having to develop core AI technologies from scratch;
- BigQuery ML to unite data analysis tasks with ML;
- AutoML for abstracted and low-code ML production without requiring ML expertise;
- Vertex AI to speed up ML experimentation and deployment, with every tool you need to build deploy and the lifecycle of ML projects
- AI Infrastructure options for training deep learning and machine learning models cost effectively. Including Deep Learning VMs optimized for data science and machine learning tasks and AI accelerators for every use case, from low-cost inference to high-performance training.
It’s important to provide not only leading tools for advanced AI practitioners, but also leading AI services for users of all kinds. Some of this involves abstracting or automating parts of the ML workflow to meet the needs of the job and technical aptitude of the user. Some of it involves integrating our AI and ML services with our broader range of enterprise products, whether that means smarter language models invisibly integrated into Google Docs or BigQuery making ML easily accessible to data analysts. Regardless of any particular angle, AI is turning into a multi-faceted, pervasive technology for businesses and users the world over, so we feel technology providers should reflect this by building platforms that help users harness the power of AI by meeting them wherever they are.
How we’re powering the next generation of AI
Creating products that help bring AI to everyone requires large research investments, including in areas where the path to productization may not be clear for years. We feel a foundation in research combines with our focus on business needs and users to inform sustainable AI products that are in keeping with our AI principles and encourages responsible use of AI.
Many of our recent updates to our AI and ML platforms began as Google research projects. Just consider how DeepMind’s breakthrough AlphaFold project has led to the ability to run protein prediction models in Vertex AI. Or how research into neural networks helped create Vertex AI NAS, which lets data science teams train models more accurately with lower latency and power requirements.
Research is crucial, but also only one way of validating an AI strategy. Products have to speak for themselves when they reach customers, and customers need to see their feedback reflected as products are iterated and updated. This reinforces the importance of seeing customer adoption and success across a range of industries, use cases, and user types. In this regard, we feel very fortunate to work with so many great customers, and very proud of the work we help them accomplish.
I’ve already mentioned Ford and Mr. Cooper, but those are just a small sampling. For example, Vodafone Commercial’s “AI Booster” platform uses the latest Google technology to enable cutting-edge AI use cases such as optimizing customer experiences, customer loyalty, and product recommendations. Our conversational AI technologies are used by companies ranging from Embodied, whose Moxie robot helps children overcome developmental challenges, to HubSpot connecting meeting notes to CRM data. Across our products and across industries around the world, customer stories grow by the day.
We also see validation in our partner network. As we noted in the pillars discussed in June, partners like Nvidia help us to ensure customers have freedom of choice when building their AI stacks, and partners like Neo4j help our customers to expand our services into areas like graph structures. Partners support our mission to bring AI to everyone, helping more customers use our services for new and expanded use cases.
Accelerating the momentum
Overall, to create products that reflect AI’s potential and likely future ubiquity, we have to take all of the preceding factors, from research to customer and analyst conversations to working with partners, and turn them into products and product updates. We’ve been very active over the last year, from the launch of Call Center AI Platform in March, to the new Speech model we released in May, to a range of announcements at the Google Cloud Applied ML Summit in June. We have much more planned in coming months, and we’re excited to work with customers not just to maintain the pace of AI momentum, but to accelerate it. Contact Center AI (CCAI) brings Google’s innovation in conversational AI to solve the most challenging customer service needs while lowering operational costs. More than a thousand customers have deployed CCAI and are steadily turning it on to power their production contact centers.
Today, we’re excited to announce that we’ve made CCAI even stronger with Agent Assist for Chat, now in public preview.
Agent Assist provides your human agents with continuous support during their calls and now chats by identifying the customers’ intent and providing them with real-time recommendations such as articles and FAQs as well as responses to customer messages to more effectively resolve the conversation.
Customers using Agent Assist for Chat have been able to manage up to 28% more conversations concurrently, while also driving up customer satisfaction by 10%. Additionally, we’ve seen them respond up to 15% faster to chats, reducing chat abandonment rates and solving more customer problems.
Agent Assist provides two key components to help agents manage conversations better:
- Smart Reply provides response suggestions to agents so they can quickly and appropriately respond to customer messages. These suggestions can be taken from your top performing agents as well as modified even further to ensure suggestions properly reflect the tone and voice of your brand. Agent Assist learns when and what recommendations to make by building a custom model that’s trained on your (and only your) data.
- Knowledge Assist unlocks the power of your knowledge base to provide articles and FAQ suggestions to agents in real-time as the conversation progresses. When using Knowledge Assist, agents no longer need to make the customer wait while they navigate multiple applications and data to find the resolution to the customer’s issue — the answer is delivered right to them.
“We’ve been very impressed by the chat capabilities of Agent Assist,” said Chris Smith, Vice President of Digital Service at Optus, one of the largest telecommunications companies in Australia
Optus has been using CCAI Dialogflow CX to send queries to virtual agents and sees great potential to use Agent Assist to provide recommendations to their customer support representatives. They expect Agent Assist to help minimize repetitive tasks by providing response and typeahead suggestions, helping improve the efficiency of their agents and the quality and consistency of service they provide.
Another customer, LoveHolidays, is using Agent Assist to support their agents and customers in the travel industry.
“Agent Assist has been a beneficial aid to agents and our customers alike… It gives us the power to flex our contact center staff levels in hours not weeks,” said Eugene Neale, Director of CX Engineering & Business IT at LoveHolidays
Analysts say online chat is becoming one of the most popular ways to reach out to businesses for customer support. IDC research finds that single-function contact centers worldwide are increasingly rare — in 2020, although phone/voice is still responsible for most interactions (at around 18%); email is responsible for around 13% of interactions, and live chat (without automation) is responsible for around 8% of interactions, according to IDC, Toward the AI-Powered Contact Center, Doc # EUR147017320, December 2020.
Deploying CCAI with Agent Assist for Chat
As part of Google’s Contact Center AI suite, Agent Assist provides a seamless handoff from chats managed by your Dialogflow CX virtual agents. If a conversation or customer requires a live agent, Agent Assist will help your team pick it up quickly and drive it to a satisfying resolution.
Historically, when managers saw contact center volumes increase they had two choices: allow customers to wait longer to speak to someone (lowering customer satisfaction) or bring on more agents (increasing cost to serve). Deploying CCAI provides contact center leaders with a third choice: equip agents with tools like, Agent Assist for Chat, to efficiently manage customer interactions while maintaining high quality service.
Global CCAI partners support Agent Assist for Chat
Agent Assist for Chat is a set of public APIs that your engineering team can integrate directly into an agent desktop to control the agent experience from end-to-end. For a more out-of-the-box solution, we have partnered with LivePerson and 247.ai to build Agent Assist directly into their agent desktops.
“Integrating our Conversational Cloud directly with Agent Assist means agents can leverage cutting-edge productivity AI to build even further on the massive ROI of conversational commerce, from reduced agent effort and time-to-respond to increased customer satisfaction and revenue,” said Alex Spinelli, CTO of LivePerson.
