Today, we are excited to announce that Google Cloud Data Catalog will be unified with Dataplex into a single user interface. With this unification, customers have a unified experience to search and discover their data, enrich it with relevant business information, organize it by logical data domains, and centrally govern and monitor their distributed data with built-in data intelligence and automation capabilities. Customers now have access to an integrated metadata platform that connects technical and operational metadata with business metadata, and then uses this augmented and active metadata to drive intelligent Data management and governance got easier the unification of Dataplex and Data Catalog
The enterprise data landscape is becoming increasingly diverse and distributed with data across multiple storage systems, each having its own way of handling metadata, security, and governance. This creates a tremendous amount of operational complexity, and thus, generates strong market demand for a metadata platform that can power consistent operations across distributed data.
Dataple provides a data fabric to automate data management, governance, discovery, and exploration across distributed data at scale. With Dataplex, enterprises can easily arrange their data into data domains, delegate ownership, usage, and sharing of data to data owners who have the right business context, while still maintaining a single pane of glass to consistently monitor and govern data across various data domains in their organization.
Prior to this unification, data owners, stewards and governors had to use two different interfaces – Dataplex to organize, manage, and govern their data, and Data Catalog to discover, understand, and enrich their data. Now with this unification, we are creating a single coherent user experience where customers can now automatically discover and catalog all the data they own, understand data lineage, check for data quality, augment with business knowledge, organize data into domains, and then use that combined metadata to power data management. Together we provide an integrated experience that serves the full spectrum of data governance needs in an organization, enabling data management at scale.
“With Data Catalog now being part of Dataplex, we get a unified, simplified, and streamlined experience to effectively discover and govern our data, which enables team productivity and analytics agility for our organization. We can now use a single experience to search and discover data with relevant business context, organize and govern this data based on business domains, and enable access to trusted data for analytics and data science – all within the same platform.” said Elton Martins, Senior Director of Data Engineering at Loblaw Companies Limited.

Getting started
Existing Data Catalog and Dataplex customers and new customers can now start using Dataplex for metadata discovery, management and governance. Please note that while the user experience interface is unified via this release, all existing APIs and feature functionalities of both products will continue to work as before. In recent years, the grocery industry has had to shift to facilitate a wider variety of checkout journeys for customers. This has meant ensuring a richer transaction mix, including mobile shopping, online shopping, in-store checkout, cashierless checkout or any combination thereof like buy online, pickup in store (BOPIS).
What’s more, in the past year and a half alone grocers have had to enable consumers new ways to shop for essentials. This has included needing to rapidly integrate or build on-demand delivery apps, offer curbside pickup with near-instant fulfillment as well as support touchless and cashless checkout experiences. Searches on Google Maps for retailers in the US with curbside pickup options have increased by 9000% since March 2020, and we believe these trends from 2020 will continue to define the future of grocery shopping.
The future of grocery will require agility and openness
Firstly, the need to rapidly adapt to changing consumer habits will be the new normal. Grocers will increasingly look to digitally transform legacy retail systems and modernize point of sale (POS) platforms to deliver and scale omnichannel experiences as quickly as possible. This necessitates a more agile and open architectural approach to technology – one built on microservices and leverages APIs so that new applications and experiences can be built, integrated and delivered faster.
Automation and data-driven retailing will be table stakes
In order for retailers to blend what they’re offering in the store with digital experiences more efficiently, they will also need to automate more. For example, with automation and business intelligence, grocers can take labor that might have been tied up with tender operations and checkout and redistribute those resources to restocking shelves, curbside pick-up or improving customer experiences.
Automation and access to real-time in-store inventory & supply chain data can also help grocers avoid the supply chain challenges seen in the early days of COVID-19. Grocers will need to find ways to leverage automation to ingest, organize, and analyze data from physical store networks, digital channels, distribution centers to better forecast demand and manage future fluctuations.
How NCR and Google Cloud are helping grocers adapt to disruption with operational agility
Helping grocers improve operational agility to address changing consumer shopping habits and to thrive during times of disruption is something that NCR and Google Cloud have teamed up to do. NCR has over 135 years of experience in retail, having invented the cash register and are continuing to help grocers innovate. NCR Emerald builds upon the company’s leadership in POS software and has turned it into a unified platform that helps grocers operate the entire store from front to back. The solution supports cashier-led checkout, self-checkout, integrated payments, merchandising, and enables regional managers and corporate employees access to the analytics and tools needed to optimize loyalty programs and promotions.

NCR has invested in a comprehensive, agile, and API-led retail architecture that lets grocers continually innovate and design new experiences as customers and the industry evolve. By running Emerald on Google Cloud, NCR can offer the solution on a subscription basis, helping grocers lower upfront capital expenditures and ensuring scalability. What’s more, NCR can tap into Google Cloud’s strength in data, analytics, and openness to deliver three key imperatives. Let’s take a look at each of these below.
Run the way grocers need to while leveraging Google Cloud as a single source of logic
Traditionally the POS system lived in the store. If disaster strikes, people still need access to food and essentials so the grocery store still needs to operate. It hardly gets more mission-critical than that. NCR Emerald is built on microservices, leveraging Kubernetes for front-of-house compute, and VMs (See graphic 1 below). This makes it easy to support lightweight clients accessible by store employees via any range of mobile devices, computer terminals, self-service kiosks, peripheral devices like receipt printers as well as legacy applications.
What’s unique is that because Emerald runs on Google Cloud, it supports all those in-store and digital touchpoints mentioned above, but also allows grocers to run lean. Emerald leverages Google Cloud as a single source of truth and operates a lot of what it does out of logic. Every sales transaction coming from every channel, including e-commerce, can be logged via NCR’s Hosted Service and centralized in BigQuery and Bigtable as a transaction data master. This enables the grocer to manage any transactional use case very consistently, whether it e supporting customers who want to purchase in one store and return in another, offering digital receipts or the ability to exchange online purchases in store. Emerald on Google Cloud can help retailers extend capabilities through the power of the cloud but not need to live exclusively in the cloud. In other words, the solution allows grocers the ability to run the way they need to.

Enable data-driven and real-time decision making for grocers
Store managers, regional managers, category managers, and others all require different cuts of the data to do their jobs effectively. However, data silos persist and how data is formatted and arranged can still remain pretty static. Therefore allowing users with different roles the ability to view and analyze that data quickly and in different ways continues to be a challenge.
As mentioned above, Emerald leverages Google Cloud data management solutions as the central repository for transactional, behavioral, and merchandising data. Every transaction from every store and every channel can be stored via NCR Hosted Service on BigQuery and Bigtable. NCR Analytics then harnesses the advanced analytical and data visualization capabilities of Looker to help grocers get a consolidated view of their business across all channels and then allow employees to slice and dice the data they way they need to. NCR Analytics also leverages the power of Google Cloud AI and machine learning to add another level of intelligence to the retailer’s data. For example, store managers can visualize how well they’re using their real estate and see how productive lanes 1-3 are compared with 7-10 or compare self-service versus manned lanes. By mapping to the retailer’s own catalog, they can also break down category-level performance and trends.

NCR Analytics takes advantage of Google Cloud’s data pipeline to reduce processing time, with scaling and resource management provided out of the box. By letting the cloud store and process the data, NCR is providing the ability for retailers to analyze their data in near real-time across all platforms – a real game changer in the grocery business.
Open APIs let grocers continually enrich the retail experience
Finally, Emerald is built on an API-first architecture managed through Apigee. It uses the power of Apigee as an open API platform to expose how Emerald can work with other NCR applications like loyalty and promotions, and third party applications like mobile ordering and order delivery to enrich the grocery experience for employees and customers. Every API that Emerald uses is available on Apigee, allowing them to share code samples and giving developers the ability to run scripts. This approach can allow retailers the ability to innovate in a fraction of the time and cost, speeding up 3rd party integrations up front and as businesses grow.
Take, for example, Northgate Market, a chain of 40 stores in California, that were able to transform its digital operations and enable experiences that set it apart from competitors – quickly and simply with Emerald. It took less than 6 months to go from contract to live deployment in the first store. Since then, Northgate Market has been able to extend their intelligence by leveraging the power of Looker and NCR Analytics.

AI researchers and engineers need better data to enable better AI solutions. The quality of an AI solution is determined by both the learning algorithm (such as a deep-neural network model) and the datasets used to train and evaluate that algorithm. Historically, AI research has focused much more on algorithms than datasets, despite their vital importance. As a result, many algorithms are freely available as starting points, but many important problems lack large, high-quality open datasets. Further, creating new datasets is expensive and error-prone.
Recently, the data-centric AI movement has emerged, which aims to develop new methodologies and tools for constructing better datasets to fix this problem. Conferences, workshops, challenges, and platforms are being launched to support improving data quality and to foster data excellence. Thought leaders such as Andrew Ng at Landing.AI and Chris Re at Stanford University are encouraging AI developers to focus more on iterative data engineering than they do tuning their learning algorithms. Our CHI-best-paper-award-winning paper, “Everyone wants to do the model work, not the data work” highlighted the significance of data quality in the practice of ML.
At Google, we are excited to contribute to data-centric AI. Today, Google Cloud is adding a new high value dataset to the Public Dataset Program, and Google researchers are announcing DataPerf, a new multi-organizational effort to develop benchmarks for data quality and data centric algorithms.
Google Cloud is committed to helping users improve their data quality, starting with supporting better public data. The Public Datasets program provides high quality datasets pre-configured on GCP for easy access. Google Cloud is adding a new high-value dataset developed by the MLCommons™ Association (which Google co-founded) to the Public Datasets program: The Multilingual Spoken Words Corpus: a rich audio speech dataset with more than 340,000 keywords in 50 languages with upwards of 23.4 million examples.
This new public dataset is aligned with the MLCommons Association vision for “open” datasets – accessible by all – that are “living” – continually being improved to raise quality and increase representation and diversity.
Google researchers, in collaboration with multiple organizations, are announcing the DataPerf effort at the NeurIPS Data-Centric AI workshop today, to develop benchmarks to improve data quality. Much like the the MLPerf™ benchmarking effort which is now the industry standard for machine learning hardware/software speed, DataPerf brings together the originators of prior efforts including: CATS4ML, Data-Centric AI Competition, DCBench, Dynabench, and the MLPerf benchmarks to define clear metrics that catalyze rapid innovation. DataPerf will measure the utility of training and test data for common problems, and algorithms for working with datasets such as: selecting core sets, correcting errors, identifying under-optimized data slices, and valuing datasets prior to labeling.
Together, supporting open, living datasets for core ML tasks, and the development of benchmarks to direct the rapid evolution of those datasets will empower the researchers and engineers who use Google Cloud to do even more amazing things – and we can’t wait to see what they create!

Google Cloud has a genuine passion for solving technology problems that make a difference for our customers. With the release of our BigQuery Connector for SAP, we’re taking a another big step towards solving a major challenge for SAP customers with a quick, easy, and inexpensive way to integrate SAP data with BigQuery, our serverless, highly scalable, and cost-effective multi cloud data warehouse designed for business agility.
Solving for simplified data integration
Like most businesses today, SAP customers are eager to unlock the immediate insights and opportunities within their ever-growing stores of business data. However, many are discovering just how hard it can be to take the first step in any modern, cloud-enabled data analytics strategy: combining SAP data with other cloud-native, and enterprise data sets in real-time and at scale. According to a 2020 SAPInsider study, more than half of SAP customers surveyed said data integration was their top analytics pain point. These companies urgently need a rapid, sustainable, cost-effective and scalable way to integrate SAP data with modern cloud data analytics solutions.
The BigQuery Connector for SAP gives our customers a solution: a fast, simple, cost-effective and massively scalable way to make SAP data fully accessible within BigQuery by leveraging customers’ existing SAP Landscape Transformation Replication Server (SLT) tooling and skill sets. It’s the first SAP SLT direct near real-time connector for BigQuery without the need to set up additional infrastructure or third-party middleware, and can be deployed using a variety of embedded or stand-alone deployment options. In fact, most customers can install the BigQuery Connector for SAP in less than an hour—a remarkably easy way to start working with our industry-leading analytics solution that delivers proven and quantifiable business advantages for customers. Additionally, the BigQuery Connector for SAP is not restricted to customers who have deployed their SAP applications on Google Cloud. Customer’s who are running their SAP applications on-premise, or on any cloud, can also deploy and realize the analytical benefits of the solution.
Designing a solution with customer requirements and investments in mind
When the Google Cloud team started work on an analytics data integration tool for our SAP customers, we began with a set of requirements designed to root out the usual sources of cost and complexity. These included:
- The need for real-time performance with deltas replicated in milliseconds
- The ability to integrate data from almost any SAP Netweaver based application running today, regardless of its deployment location (on premises, any cloud, Google Cloud)
- Automatic BigQuery data type mapping with minimal transformation required
- Generation of target tables in BigQuery directly from source, if required
- Application layer integration that avoids the issues of direct database access
- Leveraging customers’ existing SAP skillsets, change data capture, and infrastructure
An important step towards meeting these requirements came when Alphabet, Google’s parent company, decided to leverage SAP SLT as a foundation for developing direct data replication between SAP and BigQuery for its internal corporate landscape. SLT as part of SAP’s strategic Business Technology Platform, supports real-time replication of data from SAP or third-party systems to SAP HANA, however, one of its limitations was direct integration with targets like BigQuery.
SAP SLT was a logical foundation for developing the connector for several reasons:
- It’s widely adopted among SAP customers who likely already leverage SLT for SAP analytics data integration
- It works with almost every non-SaaS SAP application environment running today
- It supports real-time replication performance at massive scale
It was an obvious choice for the Alphabet engineering team who saw immediate value from integrating SAP with BigQuery.
“The BigQuery Connector for SAP has enabled fast, low latency data replication for billions of records from 500+ tables of our most critical financial and supply chain data. Now in one cost-effective BigQuery data lake, this ERP data can be combined with other data sources for previously impossible real-time analytics and ML use cases. This allows us to drive much deeper strategic insights that support business and operational excellence, management and P&L reporting and more.”—Anil Nagalla, Sr. Engineering Director, Financial Systems, Google
SAP data integration with BigQuery enables new value
By leveraging SAP SLT, the BigQuery Connector for SAP can integrate real-time data streams from any SAP system—while also taking advantage of customers’ existing SAP investments and skillsets.
At the same time, the BigQuery Connector for SAP does a lot of heavy lifting on its own. For example, it automatically handles the complex, multi-step process of transforming SAP data types for use in BigQuery—mapping data-type transitions between the SAP and BigQuery environments, creating a target table schema on BigQuery for the transformed data types, building the target BigQuery table, and even adapting as new data types appear in your SAP environment.
For teams that want to fine-tune the BigQuery Connector for SAP’s automated recommendations, the connector supports additional levels of customization and choice. But if you simply want to get the job done and give your data analytics team greater support for their high-value work, then you’ll love just how quickly and easily the BigQuery Connector for SAP turns the complicated work of data integration and performance to process large volumes of data into a done deal. By integrating enterprise data sets in real time, customers can drive differentiated value and unlock new insights and actions that drive a competitive advantage.
The BigQuery Connector for SAP really shines as an enabling tool that transports and transforms your SAP data to power analytics solutions enabled by accelerators like the Google Cloud Cortex Framework: a comprehensive set of reference architectures, deployment accelerators, and integration services designed to give SAP customers a fast and seamless path to value with their data analytics investments. Simply put, the more SAP data you make available within Google Cloud, the easier it is to get meaningful—and often game-changing—insights from these solutions.

Mrs. T’s Pierogies Moves SAP Systems to Google Cloud for Faster Analytics Capabilities for its SAP Data

Pierogies might just be the ultimate comfort food. But when Mrs. T’s Pierogies — the leading manufacturer of frozen pierogies in the US — learned it needed to transition its existing on-premises SAP ECC to S/4HANA, the company sought a little comfort for itself.
Founded in 1952, Mrs. T’s Pierogies now produces more than 650 million pierogies a year. Moving that many pierogies requires a powerful ERP system — and an equally powerful IT infrastructure on which to run it. Mrs. T’s realized that the SAP-mandated transition of its ERP solution to SAP S/4HANA was an opportunity to move its SAP systems to Google Cloud and gain real-time analytics capabilities for faster sales forecasting, more effective trade promotions, and more sophisticated planning.
From necessity to opportunity
Mrs. T’s successfully ran its SAP ECC solution on its own on-premises servers for years. But after SAP decided to sunset the product, Mrs. T’s realized that it faced multiple challenges, including:
- Migrating its SAP ECC 6.0 system from an on-premises leagcy OS to a cloud-based Linux environment
- Moving data from its SAP DB2 database to HANA
- Transitioning from ECC to SAP S/4HANA
That complex transition needed to take place with little or no downtime, since nearly all of the company’s invoices, warehouse movements, and transfer orders used the Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) protocol. Missing even a few hours of EDI transactions would put significant revenue at stake. Adding to the challenge: Some Mrs. T’s customers would not accept an invoice past five days, which left little room for error. Mrs. T’s chose Rackspace Technology, a longtime Google Cloud partner, to oversee the move.
Mrs. T’s could have chosen to run S/4HANA on its legacy hardware but saw migration to Google Cloud as an opportunity to improve key aspects of its business, in particular data analytics. Historically, sales planning and forecasting involved time-consuming manual processes. But the speed, availability, and scalability of Google Cloud meant that Mrs. T’s could take advantage of S/4HANA’s embedded analytics capabilities. Migrating could also open the door to leveraging Google Cloud’s native integration of SAP data to power Google tools such as BigQuery, Google Cloud AI Building Blocks, and more.
The move to Google Cloud also gave Mrs. T’s an opportunity to update its disaster recovery process. Previously, the company backed up to tape. So, if its SAP systems went down, a member of the IT department would have to drive the most recent tape backups an hour to its cold site, where the disaster recovery partner would load the SAP backup tape, boot the system up, switch network connections to that site, and cross their fingers. Not only would downtime be significant, but restored data would be limited to the periodic tape backup.
“Everything just worked”
Once Mrs. T’s decided to migrate to Google Cloud, the company worked with Rackspace Technology to implement the system. The first phase focused on moving the SAP production environment from on-premises infrastructure to Google Cloud and updating its database to HANA, which took place over 12 weeks. The switchover occurred over a weekend and was all but invisible to users. “We came in on Monday and everything just worked,” recalls Timothy Coyle, Director of Information Systems & Technology. In a second four-month phase, the company transitioned from ECC to S/4.
The move to Google Cloud paid dividends immediately. Batch transactions occurred twice as fast and on-screen end-user transactions rendered instantly. The upgrade also gave the finance team access to embedded analytics and monitoring for the first time. With everything now in the cloud, disaster recovery could be dynamic and nearly instantaneous, with a worst-case scenario of just 5 to 10 minutes of downtime.
“Mrs. T’s needed a skilled and experienced partner that could move its SAP environment to Google Cloud with no negative impacts to its business. We knew this migration was a key initiative in Mrs. T’s digital transformation journey,” says Chuck Britton, Google Partner Development Manager at Rackspace. “We also knew that running SAP on Google Cloud would give the business the fast and flexible analytical capabilities it needed for its SAP data.”
From ideation to production, Mrs. T’s migrated from its legacy on-premises infrastructure to a modern SAP S/4HANA solution on Google Cloud in only seven months, with minimal downtime and zero disruptions. Now that the migration is complete, Mrs. T’s has a flexible, highly scalable environment to run the SAP applications and data that fuel the business. Says Coyle, “Our strategic intent for IT is to make processes simpler, people more productive, and infrastructure more secure. This project fits right square in the middle of that strategic philosophy.”

Since 2007, PrestaShop has helped companies unlock the power of e-commerce through its open-source platform. Over 300,000 merchants worldwide use the PrestaShop platform to grow their business and serve online shoppers.
“Our open-source strategy to ecommerce enablement sets us apart,” says Rémi Paulin, Ph.D., Data Architect at PrestaShop. “Customization is becoming more crucial to retailers, and our open-source platform allows companies to continually evolve their sites and services to stand out from competitors.”
As PrestaShop grew, it wished to derive more value from its data, but the company ran into issues caused by a legacy, siloed architecture that negatively impacted data consistency and accessibility.
Let’s look at how PrestaShop works with Google Cloud and partners Fivetran and Hightouch to gain more control over data, enable a beyond-BI data strategy, and increase employee engagement from less than 10% to more than 40%.
Improving trust in data
Core systems at PrestaShop, including SQL and NoSQL databases, and SaaS Applications, were siloed; each presenting its own data, often captured from different sources such as support tickets, marketing engagement, purchase activity, and product usage. This setup made data overall inconsistent as no single system would contain a source of truth, resulting in many inefficiencies, poor collaboration across teams, and a reluctance to use data to support key decisions.
“Not long ago, less than 10% of the company regularly relied on data, so we were missing opportunities to make more data-driven decisions,” says Paulin. “Data was underutilized, and people were rapidly losing trust in data.”

PrestaShop set out to design a new architecture to address past challenges, such as lack of data consistency, and improve data accessibility.
“Google Cloud, along with Hightouch and Fivetran, allowed us to build a modern stack to solve these challenges and support our beyond-BI data strategy.”
Building a modern data stack
The first step was to build a robust data ingestion pipeline. After considering several vendors, PrestaShop chose to work with Fivetran to extract data from SaaS applications, including Zendesk, HubSpot, and GitHub, to load into BigQuery. They also use Datastream to stream Change Data Capture (CDC) data from transactional databases into BigQuery in real-time.
“Fivetran and Datastream are no-ops, efficient and highly reliable, and relieve our Data Engineers of management tasks. This brings us a high degree of confidence to build the rest of the stack atop these services,” says Paulin.
PrestaShop relies on several Google Cloud solutions, including Dataflow, and a managed Spark service by Ascend.io, for data transformation. It also uses Looker for its semantic modeling capacities and as a self-serve data platform.
As the company continued on its journey to transform how it manages and benefits from data, it engaged Hightouch to enable data accessibility through activation. Sitting on top of Looker, Hightouch unlocks all data models for operational intelligence. For example, in just a few days, the team built a customer knowledge model combining data from multiple sources and used Hightouch to sync data from the semantic layer to Zendesk via Reverse ETL. This allowed the care team to make more data-informed decisions, speeding up the time to resolve support tickets submitted through Zendesk by 33%.
“Hightouch feels like a natural extension of Looker and reinforces the position of the semantic data model as the single source of truth,” says Paulin. “It powers a variety of Data Activation use cases, supporting our beyond-BI strategy by providing teams with access to data when and where they need it to improve everyday operations. This has a big impact on the company, bolstering employee trust in available data.”

Becoming data-driven
In less than six months, PrestaShop managed to get the entire data stack up and running, build over 30 data models and engage over 120 employees with a small team of only two Data Engineers.
“Data is now accessible to every stakeholder within the company, regardless of their technical abilities,” says Paulin.
PrestaShop has already seen much progress in its shift to a more data-driven company and is excited to roll out more self-service intelligence capabilities in the future.
“Google Cloud drives home a culture of simplicity around our data stack, which is essential for us, especially given the small size of our engineering team,” says Paulin. “Fivetran and Hightouch share this culture of simplicity. Together, they offer strong foundations to support our data needs.”
Dashboards, which the company had always had an appetite for, are seamlessly created today. Before moving to Looker, a full-fledged dashboard would take an average of six weeks to develop. Now, it takes less than two days – and a simple dashboard can be created autonomously by business users in as little as 15 minutes.
Furthermore, data usage goes beyond dashboards. Thanks to Looker’s self-service exploration capabilities, many stakeholders can now glean insights surrounding product issues and business opportunities. Thanks to Hightouch, teams can activate their data to make better and smarter operational decisions.
“This is a big leap forward and one of many to come as we continue to add new models, activate our data, and onboard more users,” says Paulin. “Given our global reach and unique approach to e-commerce enablement, we know this is just the start of the great things we can accomplish with Google Cloud, Fivetran, and Hightouch.”
