Google Cloud partnered with pest control brand, OFF to build a publicly available predictive model to determine when and where mosquito populations are thriving across the nation to prevent bites and control diseases like Zika, Malaria and more!

Mosquitoes aren’t just the peskiest creatures on Earth; they infect more than 700 million people a year with dangerous diseases like Zika, Malaria, Dengue Fever, and Yellow Fever. Prevention is the best protection, and stopping mosquito bites before they happen is a critical step.

SC Johnson—a leading developer and manufacturer of pest control products, consumer packaged goods, and other professional products—has an outsized impact in reducing the transmission of mosquito-borne diseases. That’s why Google Cloud was honored to team up with one of the company’s leading pest control brands, OFF!®, to develop a new publicly available, predictive model of when and where mosquito populations are emerging nationwide.

As the planet warms and weather changes, OFF! noticed month-to-month and year-to-year fluctuations in consumer habits at a regional level, due to changes in mosquito populations. Because of these rapid changes, it’s difficult for people to know when to protect themselves. The OFF!Cast Mosquito Forecast™, built on Google Cloud and available today, will predict mosquito outbreaks across the United States, helping communities protect themselves from both the nuisance of mosquitoes and the dangers of mosquito-borne diseases—with the goal of expanding to other markets, like Brazil and Mexico, in the near future.

Source: Sadie J. Ryan, Colin J. Carlson, Erin A. Mordecai, and Leah R. Johnson

With the OFF!Cast Mosquito Forecast™, anyone can get their local mosquito prediction as easily as a daily weather update. Powered by Google Cloud’s geospatial and data analytics technologies, OFF!Cast Mosquito Forecast is the world’s first public technology platform that predicts and shares mosquito abundance information. By applying data that is informed by the science of mosquito biology, OFF!Cast accurately predicts mosquito behavior and mosquito populations in specific geographical locations.

Starting today, anyone can easily explore OFF!Cast on a desktop or mobile device and get their local seven-day mosquito forecast for any zip code in the continental United States. People can also sign up to receive a weekly forecast. To make this forecasting tool as helpful as possible, OFF! modeled its user interface after popular weather apps, a familiar frame of reference for consumers.

SC Johnon’s OFF!Cast platform gives free, accurate and local seven-day mosquito forecasts for zip codes across the continental United States.

The technology behind the OFF!Cast Mosquito Forecast

To create this first-of-its-kind forecast, OFF! stood up a secure and production-scale Google Cloud Platform environment and tapped into Google Earth Engine, our cloud-based geospatial analysis platform that combines satellite imagery and geospatial data with powerful computing to help people and organizations understand how the planet is changing.

The OFF!Cast Mosquito Forecast is the result of multiple data sources coming together to provide consumers with an accurate view of mosquito activity. First, Google Earth Engine extracts billions of individual weather data points. Then, a scientific algorithm co-developed by the SC Johnson Center for Insect Science and Family Health and Climate Engine experts translates that weather data into relevant mosquito information. Finally, the collected information is put into the model and distilled into a color-coded, seven-day forecast of mosquito populations. The model is applied to the lifecycle of a mosquito, starting from when it lays eggs to when it could bite a human.

The SC Johnson Center for Insect Science and Family Health is one the world’s leading entomology research centers, studying advanced science of insect biology, insect-borne disease prevention and effective product solutions for consumer use. The science behind brands like OFF! is grounded in knowledge from world-class entomologists who have devoted their careers to SC Johnson’s mission of eradicating diseases like Malaria and Zika.

“We are putting the power in consumers’ hands in providing them with a tool to help predict their exposure and prevent mosquito bites,” said Maude Meier, SC Johnson entomologist. “It’s an exciting time to be working in the field of insect science as we find new opportunities to combine science and technology, like Google Earth Engine, to be a force for good in our mission to prevent the spread of insect-borne diseases.”

It takes an ecosystem to battle mosquitos

Over the past decade, academics, scientists and NGOs have used Google Earth Engine and its earth observation data to make meaningful progress on climate research, natural resource protection, carbon emissions reduction and other sustainability goals. It has made it possible for organizations to monitor global forest loss in near real-time and has helped more than 160 countries map and protect freshwater ecosystems. Google Earth Engine is now available in preview with Google Cloud for commercial use.

Our partner, Climate Engine, was a key player in helping make the OFF!Cast Mosquito Forecast a reality. Climate Engine is a scientist-led company that works with Google Cloud and our customers to accelerate and scale the use of Google Earth Engine, in addition to those of Google Cloud Storage and BigQuery, among other tools. With Climate Engine, OFF! integrated insect data from VectorBase, an organization that collects and counts mosquitoes and is funded by the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

The model powering the OFF!Cast Mosquito Forecast combines three inputs—knowledge of a mosquito’s lifecycle, detailed climate data inputs, and mosquito population counts from more than 5,000 locations provided by VectorBase. The model’s accuracy was validated against precise mosquito population data collected over six years from more than 33 million mosquitoes across 141 different species at more than 5,000 unique trapping locations.

A better understanding of entomology, especially things like degree days and how they affect mosquito populations, and helping communities take action is critically important to improving public health. Built with BigQuery is helping Sibros build innovative apps on Google’s Data Cloud with simplified access to technology and support. Such partnership will enable vehicle manufacturers and suppliers to reach the next level in their use of data.

As software-defined vehicles continue to advance and the quantity of digital services grows to meet consumer demand, the data required to provide these services continue to grow as well. This makes automotive manufacturers and suppliers look for capabilities to log and analyze data, update applications, and extend commands to in-vehicle software.

The challenges the automotive sector faces can be quantified. A modern vehicle contains upwards of 70 electronic control units (ECUs), most of which are connected to one or more sensors. Not only is it now possible to exactly measure many aspects of vehicle performance, but new options become available. Using LIDAR (light detection and ranging), for example, vehicles are achieving higher levels of autonomy; this leads to a data stream from such demanding applications that may reach 25 GB per hour. For the in-vehicle processing of data, 100 million lines of software code may be present — more than a fighter jet. This in-vehicle code will have to be maintained with updates and new functionalities.

Access to the data will allow manufacturers to gain valuable insights into operational details of their vehicles. The use of this data can help to reduce costs and risks, increase ROI, support ESG initiatives, and provide valuable insights to develop innovative solutions and shorten the time to value for Electric Vehicle innovations.

Sibros’ Deep Connected Platform (DCP) makes it possible for these manufacturers to build and launch new connected vehicle use cases from production to post-sale at scale by connecting and managing all software and data throughout every life cycle stage. A key component of this platform is the Sibros Deep Logger that provides capabilities like the following:

  • Full configurability of what to record, when to record it, and how fast to record it.
  • High resolution timestamps of all Controller Area Network (CAN) messages.
  • Dynamic application of live log configurations to receive new data points without deploying new software.

For example, properly analyzed engine data enables true predictive maintenance for the first time, which creates the option to repair or replace components before failure happens. Another example would be the evaluation of data regarding the use of certain in-car features with the goal to redesign its interior.

Two other components of the DCP are software updates and remote commands to ECUs. The DCP on Google Cloud enables seamless integration with any vehicle architecture and provides OEMs and suppliers with the platform to manage connected vehicle data at rest and in transit using a proven and secure way on a global scale.

OEMs can pull data through APIs provided by Sibros into Google Data Cloud (including BigQuery) to gain access to the rich information data sets provided by the DCP within their environment and blend this data with their first party data sets to provide value insights for their business. Some of the Connected Vehicle insights that DCP information enables are:

  • Damage prevention, improved operation, or development of the next generation of engines with insights from complex analyses that could consider parameters like model, engine type, mileage, overall speed, temperature, air pressure, load, services, and more.
  • The combination of electric vehicle battery usage data like charging cycles, engine performance, and battery age with contributing factors as the use of the air conditioning to determine if such factors contribute to hazardous battery conditions and for improved battery development.
  • Cross-organization collaboration in R&D by the provision of information on all these metrics and more from real-world driving, like engine knock data and even tire pressure.
  • Google Cloud’s unified data cloud offering provides a complete platform for building data-driven applications like those from Sibros — from simplified data ingestion, processing, and storage to powerful analytics, AI, ML, and data sharing capabilities — integrated with Google Cloud. With a diverse partner ecosystem and support for multi-cloud, open-source tools and APIs, Google Cloud provides Sibros the portability and the extensibility they need to avoid data lock-in.

“Software has an ever increasing importance in the automotive world, even more so with electric vehicles and new mobility services. Google Cloud is partnering with Sibros to bring their award winning Deep Connected Platform to deliver high frequency, low latency over-the-air software updates, data logging & diagnostics capabilities to our automotive customers, leveraging the security and scale of Google Cloud. To give brands greater agility to rapidly create high-impact customer experiences and increase its own competitive edge, Brandfolder moved to Google Cloud Platform, using AI-powered solutions and fully managed cloud services to enable an efficient and focused development team to improve customer experiences.

Building a strong brand in today’s hyper-competitive business environment takes vision. It also requires a flexible, easily managed approach to digital asset management (DAM), so marketing professionals and other stakeholders can easily share, store, track, and manipulate assets to build the brand.

Many of today’s leading companies, including JetBlue, Slack, TripAdvisor, Lyft, and HealthONE, rely on Brandfolder to deliver consistent, organized, and efficient brand experiences. Brandfolder provides an easy-to-use platform that can scale across an entire company with little end-user training, empowering customers to distribute digital assets wherever they are needed. Customers also gain much greater insight into how those assets are used, and how to use them more effectively in marketing campaigns and brand messaging.

“Google Cloud made it easy to build an ML platform to quickly iterate through different brand intelligence use cases and release data-driven product features into the Brandfolder platform.”

Ajay Rajasekharan, Head of Data Science, Brandfolder

Brandfolder is constantly advancing its development efforts to introduce new data-driven features without complicating the user experience. Big data, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML) are key to meeting customers’ unique business needs, and essential for Brandfolder to compete in the fast-moving DAM industry. To enhance these capabilities, Brandfolder sought a public cloud provider that could help it scale its data pipeline cost effectively while providing access to advanced AI technologies.

After graduating from the Techstars startup accelerator program in 2013, Brandfolder tried two other cloud providers before standardizing on Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

“We saw a difference with Google Cloud from the very beginning because the interactions felt like a strategic relationship,” says Jim Hanifen, Head of Product at Brandfolder. “Google gave us startup credits and a lot of face-to-face support, which we hadn’t experienced with other cloud providers. We decided to move our entire infrastructure to Google Cloud Platform.”

Building an ML platform for brand intelligence

After performing an initial lift-and-shift migration of virtual machines (VMs) onto Compute Engine, Brandfolder built an ML platform using GCP managed services to seamlessly deliver its data products. The platform leverages Cloud SQLCloud Storage as the data lake, Cloud Dataproc for cloud-native Apache Spark computing clusters, Cloud Composer as the batch job scheduler, Cloud Pub/Sub as the backbone data pipeline, Container Registry to store Docker images, and Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) as the application orchestrator. Cloud Dataflow brings data into the data lake and into BigQuery for analysis.

“Google Cloud made it easy to build an ML platform to quickly iterate through different brand intelligence use cases and release data-driven product features into the Brandfolder platform,” says Ajay Rajasekharan, Head of Data Science at Brandfolder, who describes the architecture in a detailed blog. “We simply ingest raw application and event data on one end and output an ML service on the other.”

“Moving to Google Cloud Platform allows us to complete more sophisticated data analysis and ML models much faster, and at a much lower cost. We can create brand-specific ML models 12x faster and get them into production quickly to address our customers’ unique business needs.”

Brett Nekolny, Head of Engineering, Brandfolder

For many general use cases, Brandfolder does not need to build custom ML models, and instead relies on pre-trained API models from GCP. For example, it uses Vision API and Video Intelligence API to auto-tag creative assets on import to enable fast, intuitive searches across images and videos. When more product- and brand-specific modeling is required to address unique customer use cases, Brandfolder builds and trains custom ML models using its GCP pipeline or Cloud AutoML, a suite of products built on Google transfer learning and neural architecture search technology. For example, if a Brandfolder customer makes different types of grills, Brandfolder can use AutoML Vision to train a model to recognize the different grills.

“Moving to Google Cloud Platform allows us to complete more sophisticated data analysis and ML models much faster, and at a much lower cost,” explains Brett Nekolny, Head of Engineering at Brandfolder. “We can create brand-specific ML models 12x faster and get them into production quickly to address our customers’ unique business needs.”

Industry-leading security and performance

Google Cloud’s security model helps Brandfolder give existing and prospective customers peace of mind that their data will be protected. Cloud Identity & Access Management (Cloud IAM) provides enterprise-grade access control, while Cloud Identity-Aware Proxy (Cloud IAP) enables remote users to work more securely without the hassles of a VPN client. GCP also isolates cloud resources into projects, making it easy to assign permissions and keep data and VMs organized and segregated.

“With Google Cloud, everything begins and ends with security, which makes things very easy for us,” says Jim. “If we’re under a security review, we can submit a Google security white paper. If a potential customer has security concerns, we tell them we are hosted on GCP, and those concerns go away.”

To give customers even better application performance for accessing their brand assets, Brandfolder uses Cloud Memorystore, an in-memory data store service for Redis, to cache data and provide sub-millisecond data access for production applications.

“It was much easier for us to use Cloud Memorystore versus running Redis on our compute instances,” says Brett. “The high availability, replication across zones, and automatic failover with no data loss are big for us.”

Global private network interconnects between Google Cloud and the Fastly content delivery network (CDN) dramatically reduce latency, allowing Brandfolder’s customers to deliver and update even very large creative assets quickly around the world.

“What’s beautiful about the relationship between Google and Fastly is that if one of our customers uploads a new version of an asset, we can propagate that out to Fastly, and the new version will automatically show up in all the places where it’s referenced,” says Brett.

“The ability to quickly solve problems with AI has a substantial impact on our revenue, and that’s more apparent every quarter. Few of our competitors are doing product- or brand-specific modeling because it takes a lot of time and resources. We overcame those hurdles with Google Cloud.”

Jim Hanifen, Head of Product, Brandfolder

Improving employee and customer productivity

Brandfolder also uses Google solutions for real-time collaboration and productivity, using G Suite to connect employees with intuitive, cloud-based apps. Teams use GmailCalendarDocsDriveSheetsSlides, and Hangouts Meet every day to move the business forward. Many of Brandfolder’s customers are also G Suite users, and Brandfolder offers a plug-in that allows them to view their creative assets inside of Docs and pull images in as needed. Customers can also log into Brandfolder with their G Suite credentials, making the solution even easier to use.

“We’ve been using G Suite since the beginning, and it’s helped us collaborate efficiently to build a successful, growing company,” says Jim. “Our teams expect to have that kind of close collaboration, and everyone here enjoys the G Suite experience.”

Driving 99 percent annual business growth

With automated tagging and other innovative AI-based features, Brandfolder is helping customers locate and distribute assets faster. As a result, Brandfolder is building customer loyalty and increasing sales, growing its business by 99 percent year-over-year. Since moving to GCP, Brandfolder has been able to scale its analytics and data pipeline 50x without a corresponding increase in costs and has not had to expand its development team.

“The ability to quickly solve problems with AI has a substantial impact on our revenue, and that’s more apparent every quarter,” says Jim. “Few of our competitors are doing product- or brand-specific modeling because it takes a lot of time and resources. We overcame those hurdles with Google Cloud.”

Google Cloud's Data Analytics Design Patterns, a cross product technical solution helps customers drive more value from data with access to over 30 data analytics solutions and design patterns based on the best of Google and its partners ecosystems.

Companies today are inundated with vast amounts of data from various sources. This overwhelming amount of data is meant to benefit the company, but often leaves data teams feeling overwhelmed, which can create data bottlenecks and result in a slow time to value. In fact, only twenty seven percent of companies agree that data and analytics projects produce insights and recommendations that are highly actionable (Accenture). This means that nearly 3 in 4 companies are not unlocking value in their data, which poses a huge challenge for organizations trying to move the needle and drive real business results. We at Google Cloud, however, saw opportunity in this challenge, which is why we created Data Analytics Design Patterns: cross-product technical solutions designed to accelerate a customer’s path to value realization with their data. These industry solutions bring together product capabilities alongside design methodology, open source deployable code, data models, and reference architectures to accelerate your business outcomes.

1 Data Analytics Design Patterns.jpg

With Data Analytics Design Patterns, you get access to more than 30 ready-to-deploy data analytics solutions. Design patterns leverage the best of Google and our rich partner ecosystem, including Technology Partners & System Integrators. In this blog, we will cover 3 examples on how a design pattern can be applied to unlock the value of data:

  1. Improve mobile app experience with Unified App Analytics
  2. Maximize digital shop’s revenue with Price Optimization
  3. Protect internal systems from security and malware threat with Anomaly Detection

Unified App Analytics

If mobile apps are part of your go-to-market strategy, you have several data sources that can provide invaluable customer insights. In addition to tools such as CRM (e.g. Salesforce) and customer care (e.g. Zendesk), you likely use Google Analytics to log app events and Firebase Crashlytics to gather data about app errors. But can you easily combine back-end server data with app front-end data to unlock customer insights?

The Unified App Analytics design pattern makes it easy to plug all the disparate data sources into a single warehouse (BigQuery) and start analyzing it with a Business Intelligence tool (Looker). Once you have a complete and real time view of your customer experience with your app, you can take action. For example, if you notice an increase in app errors, you can quickly combine your Crashlytics data with your CRM data to narrow down the crashes with the highest revenue impact and prioritize their resolution. Further, you can automate your issue resolution workflow by creating a rule for any future crash that impacts a subset of VIP customers.

2 Data Analytics Design Patterns.jpg
Unified App Analytics turns your data warehouse into an actionable customer insights tool

With the Unified App Analytics design pattern, you’ll gain access to valuable insights about your user experience with your app so you can inform your future app strategy. For example, NPR, an American media company, increased user engagement by showing content that better mapped to listener interests and behaviors.

Price Optimization

In a competitive and hectic global marketplace, strategic pricing matters more than ever, but often projects are consumed by the tedium of standardizing, cleaning, and preparing data—from transactions, inventory, demand, among other sources.

Price Optimization solution allows retailers to build a data driven pricing model. The solution consists of three main components:

  • Dataprep by Trifacta: integrates different data sources into a single Common Data Model (CDM). Dataprep is an intelligent data service for visually exploring, cleaning, and preparing structured and unstructured data for analysis, reporting, and machine learning.
  • BigQuery: allows you to create and store pricing models in a consistent and scalable way as a serverless Cloud Data Warehouse service
  • Looker dashboards: surface insights and enable business teams to take action with enterprise ready BI platform

With the Price Optimization design pattern from Google Cloud and our partner Trifacta, you’ll be able to rapidly unify multiple data sources and create a real-time and ML-powered analysis, leveraging predictive models to estimate future sales. For example, PDPAOLA, an online jewelry company, doubled sales with dynamic pricing adjustments enabled by a single data view.

3 Data Analytics Design Patterns.jpg

Anomaly Detection

Organizations need to anticipate and act on risks and opportunities to stay competitive in a digitally transforming society. Anomaly detection helps organizations identify and respond to data points and data trends in high velocity, high volume data sets that deviate from historical standards and expected behaviors, allowing them to take action on changing user needs, mitigate malicious actors and behaviors, and prevent unnecessary costs and monetary losses.

The Anomaly Detection design pattern uses Google Pub/Sub, BigQuery, Dataflow, and Looker to:

  • Stream events in real time
  • Process the events, extract useful data points, train the detection algorithm of choice
  • Apply the detection algorithm in near-real time to the events to detect anomalies
  • Update dashboards and/or send alerts

The challenge of finding the important insights and anomalies in vast amounts of data applies to organizations across all industries and lines of business, but is especially important to protecting the security of an organization. For example, TELUS, a national communications company, modernized their security analytics platform leveraging this pattern, allowing them to detect anomalies in near real time to detect and mitigate suspicious activity.

Guide for Measuring Cloud Spanner Performance for Your Custom Workload

The most insightful time you'll spend today!

Database migrations are followed up with frequent performance monitoring. Traditional methods of early evaluation with Cloud Spanner are strenuous, and therefore needs simplifying with these simple steps using JMeter.

Database migration to a new database platform or technology can be daunting for various reasons. One of the common concerns is database performance. It is hard to evaluate database performance early in the evaluation cycle without performing actual data migration and application changes. This becomes even more important in the case of Cloud Spanner where modernization is required at both the database and application layers.

The traditional approach to evaluate database performance is to deploy the application and database together, migrate historical data to the new database and then simulate load tests by running an application on the new database. Doing all this for an early performance evaluation of Cloud Spanner may feel like a lot of effort.

In this post, we will explore a middle ground to performance testing using JMeter. Performance test Cloud Spanner for a custom workload before making application code changes and executing data migration. More detailed step-by-step guide is published here.

Goals

  • Estimate the number of Cloud Spanner nodes needed (and get a cost estimate).
  • Performance test the most frequently used set of queries and transactions.
  • Demonstrate the ability to scale horizontally.
  • Better understand the optimizations needed for schema and sql queries.
  • Determine latency of DML operations.

Limitations

Preparing for performance tests

  1. Identify top SQL queries, latency, frequency / hour and avg number of rows returned or updated for each. This information will also serve as a baseline for the current system.
  2. Determine Cloud Spanner region / multi-region deployment. Ideally, load should be generated from the Cloud Spanner instance’s leader region for minimum latency and best performance. Read Demystifying Cloud Spanner multi-region configurations for more details on various configurations of Cloud Spanner.
  3. Estimate the number of Cloud Spanner nodes required for a given workload based on (step 1). It is recommended to have a minimum of 2 nodes for linear scaling.
Note: Peak performance numbers of regional performance and multi regional performance are published. It is based on a 1KB single row transaction with no secondary indexes.
  4. Request quota for Cloud Spanner nodes on a given region / multi-region. It can take up to 1 business day.

Setting up Cloud Spanner

Creating the schema for Cloud Spanner

You can use the following tools to generate a schema for Cloud Spanner if you are migrating from the following source databases. Alternatively, you can model the schema manually. Schema design has a huge performance impact, hence it is recommended to review the schema very carefully.

SourceTargetTool(s)
1.MySQL / MariaDBCloud SpannerHarbourBridgeStriim
2.PostgresqlCloud SpannerHarbourBridgeStriim
3.OracleCloud SpannerStriim
4.SQL ServerCloud SpannerStriim

Note: Manual review and tuning of schema will be needed to optimize and mitigate potential hotspots. You will need to keep in mind schema design best practices when modeling your schema.

Populating seed data into Cloud Spanner

Performance of a database depends on the amount of data present. Existing data (and indexes) determines how much data is scanned on select queries and therefore performance. Hence, it is important to seed data into Cloud Spanner before performance testing.

For most realistic results, data should be migrated from an existing production source. Sometimes you cannot do that due to schema changes. One way is to utilize a custom ETL job to export and transform data and then import into Cloud Spanner. Another alternative could be to mock seed data using JMeter(More details in later sections).

JMeter performance tests

Writing Tests

JMeter will interact with Cloud Spanner just like your application. It will perform DML operations the same way as your application does. Hence, tests need to simulate production like transactions. For example if a transaction is made up of insert and/or update statements in several tables within transaction boundaries then JMeter should mimic the same.

JMeter has the following hierarchy:

Test Plan > Thread Group(s) > Sampler(s) (aka test)

Test plan is a top level component. It can contain global properties and libraries (like jdbc driver etc).

Thread Group(s) are representative of a database transaction. It contains one or more sampler(s). All the samplers within a thread group execute serially.

Sampler(s) should represent a single DML call. If your transaction needs to have multiple dml calls, you should create multiple samplers. Typically you will use JDBC Sampler for database calls. You can also use JSR 223 Sampler as described here, in case you need to use mutations or parallel reads etc. Results from one sampler can be passed to the next, as in real world application.

Executing tests and collecting results

JMeter tests should be executed as physically close to Cloud Spanner instances as possible to minimize network latency. Therefore it is best to execute them from Compute Engine (via private service connect) from the same region as the Cloud Spanner instance. In-case of multi region Cloud Spanner, GCE instances should be created in the Leader Region of the Cloud Spanner instance for lowest network latency.

JMeter should be executed via command line, it is a CPU intensive application so make sure you have allocated enough resources on the VM.

Refer to the Cloud Spanner monitoring dashboard to ensure that your Cloud Spanner instance’s CPU utilization is at or below the recommended values. In addition, use introspection tools to investigate performance issues with your database.

You might need to optimize your queries (add indexes) and re-execute tests in multiple waves to tune the performance as needed.
