IT Leaders are Prioritizing Organizations’ Sustainability Goals: Study Finds

The WFH models by virtue of the pandemic changed how organizations viewed sustainability. A recent Google commissioned study by the IDG found that the IT leadership in most organizations are taking the reins of implementing sustainable solutions!

The global-wide interruptions of the coronavirus pandemic provided the opportunity for businesses to take a closer look at how we work, learn, live, and consume. With work stoppages and quarantine orders in place, carbon emissions and pollution levels saw significant reductions, highlighting how business and environmental sustainability are linked. As the world returns to work, businesses need to adjust to the new reality and make decisions that will ensure the continuing sustainability of our planet. 

Understanding the need for sustainability

A recent Google-commissioned study by IDG, based on a global survey of more than 2,000 IT decision-makers, illustrated the importance of sustainability for organizations’ IT departments while also revealing that significant work is needed before businesses meet their sustainability goals. The good news is that ninety percent say that sustainability is a priority of their IT department and as more organizations consider the benefits of digital transformation and cloud migration, 75% report that sustainability is a “must-have” or “major consideration” when evaluating cloud providers.LEARN MOREIT Leaders Research ReportWhat are the biggest IT priorities in 2021? Businesses face both internal and external pressures to reform their practices and processes to meet new targets around sustainability, and IT leaders have an important role to play in that effort. Specifically, 54% said sustainability initiatives were important to their companies because of corporate social responsibility, 46% said it was because of environmental regulations and mandates, and 40% said it was due to the climate change impacts.

The research also examined the areas where IT leaders are looking to make positive changes for sustainability in their organizations. Not surprisingly, 62% said in their IT infrastructure and data centers, 53% their supply chain, and 46% in their facilities and building operations.

Facing the obstacles to progress

However, for many organizations, behaviors lag intent. Only 67% actually have environmental sustainability targets in place. The gap between behavior and intent widens when looking at digitally forward vs. digitally conservative organizations. For the purposes of the study, digitally forward companies were defined as either digital natives or those with a digital strategy and implementation in place. Digitally conservative organizations either have no strategy in place, or are in the process of considering or planning digital transformations, but haven’t reached the stage of implementation. 

The study revealed that digital natives embracing cloud solutions were more likely than more conservative organizations to demonstrate a commitment to sustainability. Twenty percent of digital natives are implementing IT initiatives to reduce emissions to become more environmentally sustainable, while only 10% of digitally conservative organizations have done so. 

When considering the effects of the COVID-10 pandemic, 20% of respondents from digital conservative organizations delayed or cancelled initiatives around reducing emissions to become more environmentally sustainable compared to only 12% for digitally forward respondents.

Shifting work habits, more online shopping options, rising inflation, and stretched supply chains are just a few factors making it harder to discern what’s top-of-mind for shoppers today.

But we’re starting to get a clearer picture of what consumers say they value most right now. New Harris Poll research commissioned by Google Cloud reveals how U.S. shoppers are thinking about consumer goods brands in new ways—from apparel, electronics, and beauty products, to food and beverage.

While price unsurprisingly continues to be a major consideration in purchases, the average shopper is increasingly paying close attention to the values of consumer goods brands and how eco-friendly their products and practices are.

Shoppers want to buy from brands aligned with their values


COVID-19 drove people to reflect on their priorities, elevating concepts like community service, equity, and sustainability. A decade ago, most consumer goods companies would not have made these front-and-center, operational priorities. But today’s consumer not only wants savings and convenience, they also want that good feeling that comes from spending their money with a company that aligns with their values.

Our new research reveals that 82% of shoppers prefer a consumer brand’s values to align with their own, and they’ll vote with their wallet if they don’t feel a match. Three-quarters of shoppers reported parting ways with a brand over a conflict in values.

Even with their favorite consumer goods products, a majority of shoppers will not compromise on principles. If there’s a value mismatch, 39% of shoppers said they’d permanently boycott their favorite brand, and 24% would break ties at least temporarily. Most won’t be quiet about their concerns either: 28% of consumers that found their values at odds with a brand said they have shared their concerns with friends and family, and another 15% have shared their qualms on social media.

Consumer goods companies need to prioritize sustainability


A majority of today’s consumers (52%) are especially interested in supporting sustainable brands. They want to know how companies are managing their resources, specifically whether they are sourcing responsibly. These shoppers want to see meaningful, measurable efforts from CPG firms to save energy and reduce waste, like how Nuuly, URBN’s digital rental and resale business, has woven sustainability into its business operations, from its distribution centers to reusable packaging.

In fact, 66% of shoppers are now seeking out eco-friendly brands, with 55% saying they would pay more for more sustainable products. But these same shoppers are skeptical too: 72% think that companies and brands overstate their sustainability efforts. And they’re right to question brands’ practical application of their values. According to another Harris Poll survey recently commissioned by Google Cloud, 58% of executives polled across 16 countries admit that their organization has overstated its sustainability efforts.

Product availability is table stakes


A final point from the research: The global supply chain has stretched past its limits, and 60% of consumers are voicing some level of concern about it. At the end of the day, if a preferred brand isn’t actually on the shelves of a real or digital store, it doesn’t matter what the brand’s values or sustainability efforts are. A staggering 98% said they’d either buy from a different brand or search other stores or websites.

What’s a brand to do?


After more than 25 years working in the consumer goods industry in roles ranging from marketing and product development to business strategy and technology, at companies like Johnson & Johnson, Kimberly Clark, Carter’s, and now Google Cloud, I’ve seen successful brands do four things well when it comes to their values:

  1. Don’t be generic.
    Your brand’s values need to be authentic, and they need to have teeth. But being too bold could run the risk of alienating some consumer segments. This is where technology can help. Personalizing your messages and outreach to specific shopper profiles is one way to ensure that your core values reach the right customers at the right time.
  2. Make your values clear and consistent.
    When focusing on which values to highlight with your consumers and the world, make sure they make sense for your brand and that you’ll stick to them over time. For example, it’s painfully obvious when a brand is being opportunistic and inserting itself into conversations around values like sustainability or social justice, when it doesn’t have a history of voicing those values. The key to clear and consistent messaging of values is balancing authenticity with relatability and the appropriate amount of promotion.
  3. Develop sustainability practices and communicate their impact to everyday people.
    How everyday people perceive a consumer goods brand’s sustainability initiatives is different from how an investor or general business audience does. Shoppers don’t read business sustainability plans or impact reports. To increase awareness of your brand’s sustainability efforts, consumers need to identify and interact with your brand and products directly. Some of my favorite examples are how I love that Google Maps gives me the choice of eco-friendly driving directions, and that I know I can buy low-waste, packaging-free cosmetics from a company like Lush.
  4. Reward customer loyalty.
    Shoppers have more choices than ever before, and supply chain woes are testing preferences even further. But when someone chooses a specific brand because they feel aligned with their values or like their eco-friendly products, that shopper doesn’t always get recognized or thanked. Implementing a rewards program or following-up with customers after their purchases is one way you can make loyal shoppers feel appreciated while creating a lasting relationship that extends as long as possible.

withVR Uses the Power of VR to Prep People with Speech Disorders for Real-life Speaking Situations

withVR from Google for Startups Cloud Program leverages various Google Cloud products to make VR therapy accessible to individuals with speech disorders. Read to know how the startup is committed towards using technology to support speech therapy!

Turning life experience into innovation

Did you know that 3% of Americans have a speech disorder, while 1% of the world’s population have a stutter? Just getting what they need in everyday interactions can be stressful, which intensifies when the stakes are raised during job interviews, presentations, public speaking, and other activities. As a result, some people with speech disorders may avoid conversations and relationships, and risk being denied jobs because of a difference in how they speak.

As a person who stutters, I know firsthand the ableism that people with a speech disorder can encounter in wanting to use their voice in a judgemental world: the frustration of sometimes not being able to say exactly what you want to say and therefore speaking less in speaking situations. And the educational and career opportunities are lost when doors remain closed to us, especially when employers advertise their jobs as requiring someone who speaks the language ‘fluently’.

While researchers still don’t definitively know what causes stuttering, emerging technologies are giving us new and promising pathways for improving the quality of life of people with speech disorders. 

That’s why after years of researching and testing potential therapeutic uses of virtual reality, and with the support of the Google for Startups Cloud Program, I founded withVR on International Stuttering Awareness Day (October 22) in 2020. The mission of withVR is to prepare people with speech disorders for real-life speaking situations by utilizing the power of virtual reality. 

Working through it

One of the difficulties in adapting to any disability is the opportunity to work through it in a safe and nonjudgmental environment. withVR provides a virtual space for individuals, in collaboration with their speech therapists, to practice real-world speaking scenarios in safe, controlled environments. 

Imagine being able to raise your hand in class and give your opinion without hesitation, ordering the meal you want rather than something that’s easier to say, or sit across the table from an avatar of an employer and explain why you are the right person for your dream job. Then further customize the speaking situation and its surroundings to challenge yourself and be ready for anything. That’s what withVR offers individuals and their speech therapists.

Making VR come to life

To bring the withVR vision to life, we are developing applications using the Unity game engine on Google Cloud with integrated Firebase services including authentication, web hosting, storage, and database. It’s a powerful combination that’s enabled us to build industrial-strength applications that we’ve rapidly deployed on a global basis. Today we are already collaborating with 80+ labs, clinics, and hospitals in more than 20 different countries worldwide.

These organizations help us to test and refine a virtual reality application to support people in achieving their speech goals and build comfort through immersive VR experiences using easily available viewers like Google Cardboard

The application works in conjunction with a web app through which speech therapists configure customized VR scenarios for their patients to use. As no real-life speaking situation is ever exactly the same, customization of VR scenarios is vital. They can construct different scenes, create and script avatars, and through the Google Text-to-Speech API can even choose from hundreds of different voices in a variety of languages. This gives them the flexibility to create many unique speaking situations for their clients no matter where they are in the world.

Progress from the practice sessions is presented through a dashboard that provides therapists with a tool to monitor their clients’ progress and provide feedback and encouragement.

No shortage of support

My founder’s journey has been supported by many passionate people. The Google for Startups Cloud Program has been instrumental in helping us come so far in the first year, and we’ve only scratched the surface of what’s possible. There are many capabilities in Firebase and Google Cloud that we have yet to explore, and through the startup program I now have a Google Mentor who can help guide that exploration. 

We also joined the 2Gether-International (2GI) Tech Cohort, which is supported by Google for Startups and is built for and run by entrepreneurs with disabilities. At the end of the 10-week cohort, we finished with a pitch competition, where I was one of six selected founders to pitch in just three minutes. I was very fortunate to win the Best Overall Pitch Award, gaining 10,000 USD in seed funding. This award not only highlights the potential of withVR, but also showcases that anyone can pitch their idea in a short amount of time no matter their difference. 

Working with 2GI also gave me the opportunity to collaborate and learn from other founders who have disabilities. It’s a safe space where I don’t have to explain my everyday challenges and can focus on the all-important task of advancing the vision of withVR, while seeing how others use technology in their domain. 

Building on a strong foundation

I’m amazed to look back and see what we’ve accomplished in just one year and humbled by the thousands of lives we’ve touched. Every day we receive valuable real-life feedback from people in the field—both clinicians and those with speech differences who benefit from VR therapy. That knowledge tells us that we are heading in the right direction and opening our eyes to new possibilities for where to take withVR. And inspiring us to keep moving ahead.

As we look to solve decades-old challenges with new technologies in workforce productivity, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence/machine learning, we know that we are only as good as the people behind the technology. Today, we’re proud to spotlight a few of the inspiring folks behind Google Cloud Public Sector and celebrate their recognition in the industry. 

Melissa Adamson, Head of Government Channels at Google Cloud, has been named to the highly respected Women of the Channel list for 2021. This annual list recognizes the unique strengths, leadership and achievements of female leaders in the IT channel. The women honored this year pushed forward with comprehensive business plans, marketing initiatives and innovative ideas to support their partners and customers.

Melissa was brought on to build the Public Sector channel from scratch. The initial focus was building the channel for the US government team and has since expanded to include education, Canada and Latin America.

Having a career background at both Microsoft and Accenture, Melissa leveraged her extensive professional network to build the organic partnerships needed to accelerate the Public Sector partner ecosystem. This helped her drive two key wins (US Postal Service and PTO) and personally recruit top cloud partners in the industry. Melissa loves card games and is learning a new language.

Todd Schoeder, Director of Global Public Sector Digital Strategy, was recently featured in the “Top 20 Cloud Executives to Watch in 2021” by Wash Exec. Recognized for his work in helping customers navigate through the impact of COVID-19 and developing innovative solutions to meet mission challenges, he says: “New partnerships are required to solve for the problems of the future. Challenges that were previously thought of as insurmountable, too risky or expensive, are actually quite the opposite — as long as you have the right partner that is working in your best interest with you.”

Josh Marcuse, Head of Strategy & Innovation, received his second Wash100 Award for leading a digital transformation team that works to drive the development of public sector solutions, including cyber defense, smart cities, and public health.

Josh has launched services to support collaborative team operations including Workspace for Government and an artificial intelligence-based customer service platform to support remote work needs. His work also includes leading Google Cloud’s partnerships with organizations to improve data sharing in the public health community, contact tracing activities, and supporting research efforts across national laboratories. 

Like Melissa, Josh was brought on to build a new team dedicated to strategy and innovation. This team’s purpose is to bring an intense focus to public sector mission outcomes and the public servants who own them. Josh spent a decade pushing digital modernization and workforce transformation at the U.S. Department of Defense, and co-founded the Federal Innovation Council at the Partnership for Public Service, and now brings that domain expertise to supporting government workers who are driving digital transformation.

It takes heroic efforts to achieve innovation and progress while also tightening budgets and teams. This is why many of you are considering migrating applications to Google Cloud, for benefits like scalability and flexibility, security and compliance, disaster recovery and business continuity, and cutting-edge technologies at lower costs.

To help you do this, we suggest using Google Cloud’s Migrate to Virtual Machines – part of Migration Center. This managed cloud service lets you lift and shift workloads at scale to Google Cloud Compute Engine with minimal changes and risk.

And recently, we rolled out our latest release which introduces support for workload migration from AWS to Google Compute Engine. With this addition, you can now migrate both your on-prem and AWS workloads at scale. This means centralized management for your end to end workload migration journey from both sources via Cloud Console or APIs. 

Simple and easy migrations from AWS and VMware sources to Google Cloud

Migration of AWS EC2 instances directly to Google Compute Engine using Migrate to Virtual Machines follows a well established and easy journey, which means a minimal learning curve for users who are already migrating workloads from VMware. Workload migration is agent-less, which means you do not need to access or alter workloads as a prerequisite for migration, allowing you to execute zero-touch migrations. Migrate instance data with no interruptions to the running workload at the source for a fast cutover to Google Cloud. In addition, our end-to-end cloud console interface surfaces your AWS EC2 inventory, migrations, and groups so you can execute migrations without ever leaving the cloud console interface. 

Large-scale migrations 

Completing a large-scale migration project in a timely manner calls for careful planning and streamlined migration sprints. The Migrate to Virtual Machines’ Groups construct enables you to group source VMs together in the planning phase. When it’s time to execute the planned migration, VM Groups let you execute migration operations on a group level, or on a subset of the group, streamlining the process at scale.

Minimal downtime and risk

Application uptime is key to keeping your business running. Every migration with this latest release of the service periodically replicates data from the source workload to the destination without manual steps or interruptions to the running workload, minimizing workload downtime and enabling fast cutover to Google Cloud. You can also launch non-disruptive migration tests — referred to as test-clones — to help you validate that these workloads will work properly in the cloud before cutting over. This helps avoid issues that might have otherwise been costly or disruptive to your business. 

How the service works

Migrations simply work, at scale, in a managed service fashion. With Migrate to Virtual Machines, there’s no requirement to provision or manage migration-specific resources in the cloud. The service uses replication-based migration technology to lift and shift workloads from source environments to Google Cloud. The Migrate Connection replicates source VM disk snapshots in the background with no interruption to the source workload. Replicated data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and when you instantiate a migrating VM using a test-clone or cut-over, the service seamlessly adapts your source VM operating system to boot and run natively in the cloud — including configuring network settings and deploying Google Cloud guest packages. 

The migration journey of an EC2 instance — or VMware VM — to Google Cloud is comprised of the following steps:

1. Onboarding a source VM for migration: Onboard one or more VMs for migration from the source environment fleet.

2. Configure landing zone target: You can migrate an instance to any Google Cloud project in your environment and update landing zone details at any time before executing a test-clone or cutover.

3. Initiate VM data replication of source workload: Migrate to Virtual Machines periodically replicates instance disks to the cloud with no interruption to the source instance. You can control replication frequently and pause or resume at any point in time. 

4. Test migrating instance: Test-clone creates a copy of your source instance in the defined landing zone to validate the migrating instance in the cloud before executing a cut-over. You can repeat the test-clone multiple times to multiple landing zones for thorough validation

5. Cutover migrating instance: Cutover operation shuts down your source instance and then performs the short final sync to Google Cloud. Migrated VM is instantiated in the target landing zone.

Getting started with Migrate to Virtual Machines 

It’s quick and easy to start migrating your AWS EC2 instances and on-premises VMs today:

  1. Enable the vmmigration API in a Google Cloud project 
  2. Create an AWS source in your environment
  3. Onboard and initiate replication of instance data from source 
  4. Set migrating instance target details. 
  5. Perform non-disruptive tests of your migrating instance using test-clone
  6. Cutover your instance to the cloud with minimal down time

Every year at CES, people from around the world experience the latest and greatest that consumer tech has to offer. In 2021, CES will be in an all-digital format for the first time.

So how can a virtual show like CES create immersive experiences for attendees tuning in remotely? That’s an interesting challenge for the cloud, and of course, every challenge presents an opportunity.

Google Cloud and 5G help enterprises deliver new experiences


Earlier in 2020, we announced our enterprise telecommunications strategy to deliver workloads to the network edge on Google Cloud, and during our SearchOn event last October, we announced how cloud streaming technology can power augmented reality (AR) in consumer search results.

Now, we’re merging the best of both worlds: Technology built for consumer search can take advantage of our enterprise edge capabilities. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, this past year accelerated our support for enhanced consumer experiences across the board in novel ways. For example, we attempted to address questions such as how potential buyers can make a purchasing decision when they can’t see the product up close. This question becomes even more critical when considering a large purchase such as a new car.

That’s exactly what Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and Google Cloud are working together to solve. As part of FCA’s Virtual Showroom CES event, you can experience the new innovative 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe by scanning a QR code with your phone. You can then see an Augmented Reality (AR) model of the Wrangler right in front of you—conveniently in your own driveway or in any open space. Check out what the car looks like from any angle, in different colors, and even step inside to see the interior with incredible details.

“As we continue our journey towards becoming a customer-centric mobility company, FCA is adopting emerging technologies that enable us to accelerate and deliver at the speed of our customers’ expectations,” said Mamatha Chamarthi, Chief Information Officer, FCA – North America and Asia Pacific. “Through our collaborative partnership with Google, we are able to expand our efforts to provide an immersive customer experience.”

Harnessing the power of edge with 5G


In order to create a mixed-reality experience with a 3D car model, computer-aided design (CAD)-based data sources that represent a 3D vehicle with highly detailed geometry, depth, texture, and lighting were used. High-fidelity models, such as cars with full interiors, often mean large files (GBs in size). Traditionally, depending on your connection, this can result in long waiting times as assets are downloaded onto your phone. In addition, while mobile phones are more powerful than the Apollo Guidance Computer, they are no match for the power we have in the cloud. We still want to bring these high end experiences to everyone, regardless of their respective device or geographical location.

We solve this problem by rendering the model in Google Cloud, then streaming it to the devices.

Specifically, the Cloud AR tech uses a combination of edge computing and AR technology to offload the computing power needed to display large 3D files, rendered by Unreal Engine, and stream them down to AR-enabled devices using Google’s Scene Viewer. Using powerful rendering servers with gaming console grade GPUs, memory, and processors located geographically near the user, we’re able to deliver a powerful but low friction, low latency experience. This rendering hardware allows us to load models with tens of millions of triangles and textures up to 4k, allowing the content we serve to be orders of magnitude larger than what’s served on mobile devices (i.e., on-device rendered assets). Doing so leverages high-speed 5G connectivity and streams directly from Google Cloud’s distributed edge, delivering a rich, photorealist immersive experience.
