How TapClicks’ Google Cloud Migration Makes Life Easy for Marketers

Editor’s note: In this blog post we learn how TapClicks migrated to Google Cloud to offer their marketing customers a unified platform for data management, operations, insights, and analysis.
TapClicks is a smart marketing cloud, powered by data, that unifies our customer’s marketing. By choosing to migrate our core applications last year to Google Cloud, we cut costs, solved data-sharing concerns for our customers, and opened our stack up to a new ecosystem of possibilities.
The core problem that we’re solving for our customers is how to manage their marketing infrastructures data and operations. Life isn’t easy for marketers now. There are 7,000 different vendors servicing this space today – creating much complexity between digital agencies, media, and brands. Marketers face challenges in navigating all of these systems, logging in and out, understanding pacing goals, and managing the flow of marketing data so they can analyze and report internally as well as to their clients at scale.
We unify omnichannel campaign data (250 API connectors and 6000 Smart Connectors ™ ) from a plethora of marketing sources on an automated data warehousing solution, creating simplicity for organizations. Over 4,000 agencies, media companies, and brands use our Marketing Operations and Data Management Platform, which imports data at scale and creates an automatic data warehouse on Google Cloud. Teams can also leverage TapClicks, like our world class Facebook connector, to import data directly into Google Data Studios. Beyond importing and storing, we also provide data exporting to other Google solutions like Google Data Studio and Google Sheets. We also create interactive dashboards that let stakeholders and clients analyze their data, as well as automated, multi-channel reports that go out to clients at specified times. So channel comparisons, optimizations, attribution, and calculations are easily performed. Some of our customers are able to generate hundreds of thousands of individual reports and dashboards for their clients.
Although we may be best known for our reporting and analytics, we also empower teams managing the marketing operations workflow from customers and internal stakeholders, especially at scale. Our user-friendly, configurable system helps manage their orders and campaigns. Through automation of this process, we deliver tremendous amounts of efficiency, time saving, cost savings, and reduction of errors. The combination of these solutions makes up our unified platform, with additional capabilities like marketing intelligence that offers competitive and brand-level analysis. This is a disruptive solution in use by all leading media companies, agencies and many brands.
Partnering for possibilities
We faced a few challenges with our original tech stack, which included a mix of the leader in web services revenue, leaders in high performance data warehousing, as well as vendors on bare metal servers.
- One challenge was around costs, which were growing.
- Second, many of our customers work with multiple brands, and are very hesitant to share their data with the leader in web services, who’s often viewed as their competitor.
- Third, these vendors are more focused on their own revenue rather than a true long term partnership that would enable their customers to enjoy similar success as they have experienced.
When looking at other cloud providers, Google Cloud emerged for us as the front runner. They were competitive on costs, and their native Kubernetes support was superior— a big selling point for our DevOps team. There’s also a movement in the marketing and advertising industry away from AWS toward Google Cloud because of the data-sharing concern. Finally, most of our customers are already using Google Cloud tools, so there’s brand recognition and familiarity there, and easier integrations with their own systems.
Migrating to Google Cloud
Our migration, which took about five months, involved moving a significant chunk of our infrastructure, including our core applications, using Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE). In our legacy architecture, each of our clients was assigned to one of our virtual machines (VMs), and there was a lot of unused capacity because we had to provision for the max usage. We appreciated GKE’s cloud native capabilities, especially autoscaling, a huge benefit for our web application. We have varying usage patterns during the day, and though our application is mostly used during business hours, there are also days in the month of higher usage, and autoscaling saves us time and costs. GKE also makes deployments much easier, and we anticipate a lot of benefits there for our developer environments. We’ve moved some of our microservices into GKE and plan to move more in the future. All in all, we were able to migrate our core products and the bulk of our AWS spend successfully to Google Cloud.
We also moved from our other vendors Relational Database Service (RDS) to running MySQL on our own VMs on Google Cloud, which gives us more flexibility in terms of settings and fine tuning. We’re still trying to find the best mix as we’re modernizing our infrastructure, and we took this opportunity to migrate from MySQL 5.7 to 8.0.
Our next stage is exploring more of the capabilities and services of Google Cloud, including BigQuery, which we’re considering for our own data warehouse. The fact that we could also run Snowflake on Google Cloud, if needed, was another selling point for our migration.
We’re especially interested in BigQuery ML’s machine learning and natural language processing capabilities, which enabled better predictive insights. Our customers want insights from their campaigns— which are working, which are paying off, where should they invest next? Using our platform, they’re looking not only to generate reporting, but also identify opportunities to improve campaign performance. We plan to use AI and ML to improve those capabilities, so that our customers can seamlessly unlock insight and intelligence from their marketing data and campaigns.
Double-clicking on Google Cloud
For us, being able to deeply leverage and partner with Google Cloud to deliver those solutions on a single stack is critical, and we think our customers will love it. We see TapClicks and Google Cloud partnering at a level beyond what you typically see in a cloud provider relationship. Already, fifty percent of our company is working with various Google Cloud solutions, and we envision TapClicks and Google Cloud as extensions of each other, providing a single, powerful platform solution.
Google Cloud understands the partnership concept, and their team was able to shine a light on their services and what they could bring to the table. Compared to our previous experiences, dealing with the Google Cloud team has been a true pleasure. Now that we’ve migrated, we’re ready to take our next steps into the services available to us in the Google Cloud ecosystem, and the problems we’ll continue to solve for our customers. New Enterprise Capabilities and Changes to Cloud Spanner Reduces Cost of Running Workloads by 90 Percent

Customers love Cloud Spanner because it gives them the benefits of relational semantics and SQL while also delivering the scale and availability of non-relational databases. Many of these customers want to move even more of their work to Spanner, and have requested smaller instance sizes to support development, testing and small production workloads. We’re happy to announce that they’ll soon get what they asked for: more granular instance sizing is coming to Spanner.
Granular instance sizing will be available in Public Preview soon. With this feature, you can run workloads on Spanner at as low as 1/10th the cost of regular instances, equating to approximately $65/month.
In addition, we are launching new enterprise capabilities to break down operational silos for real-time insights and provide greater database observability to developers:
- Datastream, now in public preview, is a change data capture (CDC) service that allows enterprises to synchronize data across heterogeneous databases and applications. With Spanner support in Datastream, users will be able to stream data from MySQL or Oracle to Spanner reliably and with minimal latency.
- BigQuery federation to Spanner (coming soon) lets users query transactional data residing in Spanner, from BigQuery, without moving or copying data.
- Key Visualizer, available now in public preview, provides interactive monitoring so developers can quickly identify trends and usage patterns in Spanner.
Democratizing access with more granular instance sizing
Today, customers provision Spanner instances by specifying the number of nodes they need to run their workloads. Each node can provide up to 10,000 queries per second (QPS) of reads or 2,000 QPS of writes (writing single rows at 1 KB of data per row) and 2 TB of storage. A Spanner node is replicated across 3 zones for regional instances, and 5 or more zones for multi-regional instances. The choice of node count determines the amount of serving and storage resources that are available to the databases in a given instance.
Historically, the most granular unit for provisioning resources on Spanner has been one node. To enable more granular control, we are introducing Processing Units (PUs); one Spanner node is equal to 1,000 PUs. Customers can now provision in batches of 100 PUs, and get a proportionate amount of compute and storage resources. This will allow teams to run smaller workloads on Spanner at much lower cost. With this feature, customers can start at 100 PUs and scale up as needed in batches of 100 PUs, to up to 1,000 PUs (1 node), all with zero downtime. Subsequently, customers can continue to scale up by adding more nodes, just like what they do today. Customers do have the choice of using either PUs or nodes to provision resources within workloads, when those workloads occupy multiple nodes of capacity.
To illustrate with an example, let’s say a game developer creates a Spanner instance called “baseball-game” in us-central1, with 100 PU compute capacity at $65/month price.

As you can see below, proportional maximum storage of 205 GB is assigned to the 100 PU instance.

Once the game starts becoming popular and resource demands increase, the user edits the instance to increase the compute capacity to 500 PUs with proportional maximum 1 TB of storage.

The game grows in popularity, and the gaming company prepares to launch a much-awaited capability in the game. Anticipating a sharp increase in usage at launch day, the game developers increase the compute capacity to 3,000 PUs. Compute capacity assigned to the instance over a period of time can be viewed in Cloud Monitoring graphs:

Breaking down operational silos with Datastream CDC and BigQuery federation
BigQuery Federation. BigQuery has made analytics easy by bringing together data from multiple sources for seamless analysis. Soon you’ll also be able to analyze data in Spanner directly in BigQuery. With Spanner’s BigQuery federation, you’ll be able to instantly query data residing in Spanner in real-time without moving or copying the data. Simply set up the Spanner as an external data source in BigQuery, as shown below.

Change Data Capture ingest. Now in public preview, Datastream lets you stream change data into Google Cloud from MySQL and Oracle databases. As of today, you can ingest this change data directly into Spanner using a built-in Dataflow template. This lets you migrate data from MySQL and Oracle databases into Spanner in near-real time.
Understanding performance and resource usage with Key Visualizer
Key Visualizer is a new interactive monitoring tool that lets developers and administrators analyze usage patterns in Spanner. It reveals trends and outliers in key performance and resource metrics for databases of any size, helping to optimize queries and reduce infrastructure costs. The popularity of meal kit delivery services has surged in recent years as consumer attitudes toward home cooking and grocery shopping have shifted. As a pioneer in the category, Blue Apron helps its customers create incredible home cooking experiences by sending culinary-driven recipes with high-quality ingredients and step-by-step instructions straight to customers’ doors. Blue Apron also offers a monthly wine subscription service and a la carte culinary tools and products through its marketplace.
If that sounds simple, it isn’t.
Ingredients for the meal kits must be sourced at the right time, quality, and price. Orders must be packed efficiently and in exactly the right proportions. Most importantly, meal kits must be delivered to the customer fresh and on time.
To meet these criteria and make data meaningful and intuitive to its managers, one of the tools Blue Apron relies on is Looker, an analytics platform that lets business users explore data and ask sophisticated questions using familiar terms. Looker integrates its solution with Google Cloud Platform to help customers modernize their analytics.

Blue Apron previously used Looker with a single database instance hosted on another cloud provider. As data volumes grew and queries became more complex, it became difficult to scale. Blue Apron’s only options were choosing ever-larger server classes and increasing storage throughput by purchasing a higher number of provisioned IOPS. To improve speed, scalability, and cost efficiency, Blue Apron moved its data warehouse to Google BigQuery.

The analytics platform of the future
When you’re making business decisions about a customer’s dinner, speed matters. Looker takes full advantage of the power of Google BigQuery, making it easy to build a data exploration platform.
Blue Apron’s applications publish event data to Kafka—approximately 140 million events per day—and data is then streamed into Google BigQuery, which performs lightning-fast queries on both streamed and static data. Now, business users and analytics teams can make decisions based on near real-time information in Looker, instead of waiting until the next business day for results.
“After we moved to Google BigQuery, query time was reduced exponentially. It’s an astonishing difference, allowing us to run 300 queries per day,” says Sam.
Previously, Blue Apron spent up to a week out of every month optimizing its data warehouse to attempt to improve query performance. With Google BigQuery, all maintenance is handled by Google, reclaiming 25% of up to two engineers’ time. Even when multiple people are using Looker concurrently, query performance never degrades and storage never runs out.

An empowering, integrated toolset
Looker takes advantage of aggressive caching and support for date-based table partitioning in Google BigQuery to increase performance, simplify the load process, and improve data manageability. By partitioning data by time, Blue Apron can also take advantage of better long-term storage pricing without sacrificing query performance. When using Google BigQuery with Looker, analysts can easily see how much data is going to be scanned before each query is run.
Blue Apron is also using Looker for Google BigQuery Data Transfer Service to provide actionable analytics for all of the company’s Google marketing data from Google AdWords and DoubleClick by Google in one place to understand campaign performance across channels, saving its data operations team months of work. Using Looker Blocks, marketers can quickly make sense of the data with reports and dashboards, and set alerts when campaign performance hits certain thresholds.

Looker Blocks for Google AdWords and DoubleClick by Google provide all the analysis you’d get straight from the Google console, plus additional value-add analysis that’s impossible to replicate without SQL. Complex metrics such as ROI on ad spend, flexible multi-touch attribution, and predictive lifetime value empower marketers with a better understanding of their customers and where to spend their next dollar.
In addition to these turnkey dashboards and pieces of analysis, marketers can customize views to meet their unique needs and workflows. These capabilities help the Blue Apron marketing team make decisions regarding the allocation of spend to maximize customer acquisition and retention.

We wanted to find out which of the most popular database services on two of the biggest cloud provider (AWS and Google), developers preferred to use.
More specifically, we wanted views from enterprises in the region (it’s hard to impossible to find data that’s specific to India.)

Analytics Hub for Secure Data Sharing and Analytics Unlocks True Data Value and Insights

Customers tell us that sharing and exchanging data with other organizations is a critical element of their analytics strategy, but it’s hamstrung by unreliable data and processes, and only getting harder with security threats and privacy regulations on the rise.
Furthermore, traditional data sharing techniques use batch data pipelines that are expensive to run, create late arriving data, and can break with any changes to the source data. They also create multiple copies of data, which brings unnecessary costs and can bypass data governance processes. These techniques do not offer features for data monetization, such as managing subscriptions and entitlements. Altogether, these challenges mean that organizations are unable to realize the full potential of transforming their business with shared data.
To address these limitations, we are introducing Analytics Hub, a new fully managed service, available in Q3, in preview, that helps you unlock the value of data sharing, leading to new insights and increased business value. With Analytics Hub you get:
- A rich data ecosystem by publishing and subscribing to analytics-ready datasets.
- Control and monitoring over how your data is being used, because data is shared in one place.
- A self-service way to access valuable and trusted data assets, including data provided by Google. For example, a unique dataset from Google Search Trends will be available, that you can query and combine with your own data.
- An easy way to monetize your data assets without the overhead of building and managing the infrastructure.
Built on a decade of cross-organizational sharing
While Analytics Hub is a new service, it builds on BigQuery, Google’s petabyte-scale, serverless cloud data warehouse. BigQuery’s unique architecture provides separation between compute and storage, enabling data publishers to share data with as many subscribers as you want without having to make multiple copies of your data. With BigQuery, there are no servers to deploy or manage, which means that data consumers get immediate value from shared data. Data can be provided and consumed in real-time using the streaming capabilities of BigQuery and you can leverage the built in machine learning, geospatial, and natural language capabilities of BigQuery or take advantage of the native business intelligence support with tools like Looker, Google Sheets, and Data Studio.
BigQuery has had cross-organizational, in-place data sharing capabilities since it was introduced in 2010. We took a look at usage metrics in BigQuery and found that over a 7 day period in April, we had over 3,000 different organizations sharing over 200 petabytes of data. These numbers don’t include data sharing between departments within the same organization.

As you can see, data sharing in BigQuery is already popular. But we want to make it easier and even more scalable.
Raising the bar on data sharing
To make data sharing easier and more scalable in BigQuery, Analytics Hub introduces the concepts of shared datasets and exchanges. As a data publisher, you create shared datasets that contain the views of data that you want to deliver to your subscribers. Next, you create exchanges, which are used to organize and secure shared datasets. By default, exchanges are completely private, which means that only the users and groups that you give access to can view or subscribe to the data. You can also create internal exchanges or leverage public exchanges provided by Google. Finally, you publish shared datasets into an exchange to make them available to subscribers.
Data subscribers search through the datasets that are available across all exchanges for which they have access and subscribe to relevant datasets. This creates a linked dataset in their project that they can query and join with their own data. Subscribers pay for the queries that they run against the data while the publisher pays for the storage of the data. Data providers can add new data, new tables, or new columns to the shared dataset and these will be immediately available to subscribers. In addition, the publisher can track subscribers, disable subscriptions, and see aggregated usage information for the shared data.
Analytics Hub makes it easy for you to publish, discover, and subscribe to valuable datasets that you can combine with your own data to derive unique insights. Here are some types of data that will be available through Analytics Hub:
- Public datasets: Easy access to the existing repository of over 200 public datasets, including data about weather and climate, cryptocurrency, healthcare and life sciences, and transportation.
- Google datasets: Unique, freely-available datasets from Google. One example of this is the COVID-19 community mobility dataset. Another example is the forthcoming Google Trends dataset, which will provide the top 25 search terms and top 25 rising search terms over a 5 year window in 210 distinct locations in the US. Trends data can be used by everyone in the organization to gain insights into what customers care about.
- Commercial (paid for) datasets: We are working with leading commercial data providers to bring their data products to Analytics Hub. If you are interested in delivering your data via Analytics Hub, we’re also introducing Data Gravity, an initiative that provides storage benefits and new distribution paths for data published through Analytics Hub.
- Internal datasets: We know that data sharing can be challenging in larger organizations. Analytics Hub can be used for internal data, for example, to share standardized customer demographics with your sales engineering and data science teams.

Next steps for Analytics Hub
This is just the beginning for Analytics Hub. As we get to preview and general availability, we will be adding additional capabilities, including workflows for publishing and subscribing, publishing analytics assets (Looker Blocks, Data Studio reports, Connected Google Sheets) along with the shared data, the ability for data publishers to specify query restrictions on the usage of their data, and making it easy for data publishers to create sandbox environments for subscribers to work with their data, even if they are not yet on Google Cloud. We will provide features in Analytics Hub for monetization of data, including managing subscriptions, data entitlements, and billing.

Google and AI Researchers Work towards Building Data-centric AI

AI researchers and engineers need better data to enable better AI solutions. The quality of an AI solution is determined by both the learning algorithm (such as a deep-neural network model) and the datasets used to train and evaluate that algorithm. Historically, AI research has focused much more on algorithms than datasets, despite their vital importance. As a result, many algorithms are freely available as starting points, but many important problems lack large, high-quality open datasets. Further, creating new datasets is expensive and error-prone.
Recently, the data-centric AI movement has emerged, which aims to develop new methodologies and tools for constructing better datasets to fix this problem. Conferences, workshops, challenges, and platforms are being launched to support improving data quality and to foster data excellence. Thought leaders such as Andrew Ng at Landing.AI and Chris Re at Stanford University are encouraging AI developers to focus more on iterative data engineering than they do tuning their learning algorithms. Our CHI-best-paper-award-winning paper, “Everyone wants to do the model work, not the data work” highlighted the significance of data quality in the practice of ML.
At Google, we are excited to contribute to data-centric AI. Today, Google Cloud is adding a new high value dataset to the Public Dataset Program, and Google researchers are announcing DataPerf, a new multi-organizational effort to develop benchmarks for data quality and data centric algorithms.
Google Cloud is committed to helping users improve their data quality, starting with supporting better public data. The Public Datasets program provides high quality datasets pre-configured on GCP for easy access. Google Cloud is adding a new high-value dataset developed by the MLCommons™ Association (which Google co-founded) to the Public Datasets program: The Multilingual Spoken Words Corpus: a rich audio speech dataset with more than 340,000 keywords in 50 languages with upwards of 23.4 million examples.
This new public dataset is aligned with the MLCommons Association vision for “open” datasets – accessible by all – that are “living” – continually being improved to raise quality and increase representation and diversity.
Google researchers, in collaboration with multiple organizations, are announcing the DataPerf effort at the NeurIPS Data-Centric AI workshop today, to develop benchmarks to improve data quality. Much like the the MLPerf™ benchmarking effort which is now the industry standard for machine learning hardware/software speed, DataPerf brings together the originators of prior efforts including: CATS4ML, Data-Centric AI Competition, DCBench, Dynabench, and the MLPerf benchmarks to define clear metrics that catalyze rapid innovation. DataPerf will measure the utility of training and test data for common problems, and algorithms for working with datasets such as: selecting core sets, correcting errors, identifying under-optimized data slices, and valuing datasets prior to labeling.
Together, supporting open, living datasets for core ML tasks, and the development of benchmarks to direct the rapid evolution of those datasets will empower the researchers and engineers who use Google Cloud to do even more amazing things – and we can’t wait to see what they create!
