In October 2018, Google put out a call to organizations around the world to submit their ideas for how they could use AI to help address societal challenges. Thousands came forth. Some of their ideas are incredible.

For the past few years, we’ve applied core Google AI research and engineering to projects with positive societal impact, including forecasting floodsprotecting whales and predicting famine. Artificial intelligence has incredible potential to address big social, humanitarian and environmental problems, but in order to achieve this potential, it needs to be accessible to organizations already making strides in these areas. So, the Google AI Impact Challenge, which kicked off in October 2018, was our open call to organizations around the world to submit their ideas for how they could use AI to help address societal challenges.

Accelerating social good with artificial intelligence” sheds light on the range of organizations using AI to address big problems. It also identifies several trends around the opportunities and challenges related to using AI for social good. Here are some of the things  we learned—check out the report for more details.

AI is globally relevant 

We received 2,602 applications from six continents and 119 countries, with projects addressing a wide range of issue areas, from education to the environment. Some of the applicants had experience with AI, but 55 percent of not-for-profit organizations and 40 percent of for-profit social enterprises reported no prior experience with AI.

Similar projects can benefit from shared resources

When we reviewed all the applications, we saw that many people are trying to tackle the same problems and are even using the same approaches to do so. For example, we received more than 30 applications proposing to use AI to identify and manage agricultural pests. The report includes a list of common project submissions, which will hopefully encourage people to collaborate and share resources with others working to solve similar problems.  

You don’t need to be an expert to use AI for social good

AI is becoming more accessible as new machine learning libraries and other open-source tools, such as Tensorflow and ML Kit, reduce the technical expertise required to implement AI. Organizations no longer need someone with a deep background in AI, and they don’t have to start from scratch. More than 70 percent of submissions, across all sectors and organization types, used existing AI frameworks to tackle their proposed challenge. 

Successful projects combine technical ability with sector expertise 

Few organizations had both the social sector and AI technical expertise to successfully design and implement their projects from start to finish. The most comprehensive applications established partnerships between nonprofits with deep sector expertise, and academic institutions or technology companies with technical experience.

ML isn’t the only answer 

Some problems can be addressed by using alternative methods to AI—and result in faster, simpler and cheaper execution. For example, several organizations proposed using machine learning to match underserved populations to legal knowledge and tools. While AI could be helpful, similar results could be achieved through a well-designed website. While we’ve seen the impact AI can have in solving big problems, you shouldn’t rule out more simple approaches as well. 

Global momentum around AI for social good is growing—and many organizations are already using AI to address a wide array of societal challenges. As more social sector organizations recognize AI’s potential, we all have a role to play in supporting their work for a better world.

After a seamless migration to Google Cloud Platform with CloudCover and Google Cloud Professional Services, Hike has reduced its costs by 20% and processed analytics queries 20 times faster than with its previous cloud provider. The business is also using AI and machine learning to enhance the experience provided by a new sticker-based messaging app, Hike Sticker Chat.

India is a market of opportunity for businesses that provide messaging apps to consumers. With more than 1.3 billion people, the country is the second most populous in the world. However, global messaging app providers face a robust market challenge from Hike, a home-grown internet and technology startup. Launched in 2012, Hike provides innovative products such as Hike Messenger and more recently the AI- and machine-learning-enabled Hike Sticker Chat, a service that enables young people in the country to express themselves through digital stickers.

The business says it understands the people of India and communication like no one else, while its mission is to reduce individuals’ dependency on the keyboard. To do this, Hike is building one of the largest repositories of AI and machine-learning-enabled stickers for Hike Sticker Chat. This messaging platform is, according to Hike, the only product of its type that enables conversations through stickers covering more than 40 languages and local dialects.

Google Cloud Results

Founded by Kavin Bharti Mittal, the Delhi-based venture is backed by SoftBank, Tencent, Tiger Global, Foxconn, and Bharti. To date, Hike has raised $261 million in funding. In August 2016, Hike raised its Series D round of funding, led by Tencent and Foxconn, at a valuation of $1.4 billion. The business is one of the fastest Indian startups to achieve Unicorn status, doing so in less than four years.

Hike started operations on a multinational cloud service. However, as user numbers and usage grew, the business began exploring options to improve performance and stability, reduce costs, and cut administration loads. In particular, Hike wanted to reduce latency between cloud data centers.

Focus on product development

“We aimed to move away from a technology stack with single points of failure to a horizontally scaled, highly reliable, distributed systems and managed services environment that enabled us to focus on product development rather than operations,” says Aditya Gupta, Director, Engineering, Hike.

Hike then began exploring the opportunities presented by Google Cloud Platform. The business held a number of executive-level meetings with Google to understand the capabilities, roadmap, and track record of the cloud service. It then decided to proceed with a proof of concept with Google Cloud Premier Partner CloudCover.

The proof of concept revealed that when Cloud Load Balancing was operating, latency between the Google Cloud data center in Taiwan and Delhi, India, was less than the latency between the incumbent cloud provider’s data center and Delhi. Further, compute throughput was up to two times greater on Compute Engine than on the equivalent service, while Hike could complete more then 1 million connections on Compute Engine – up from 500,000 connections on the incumbent service.

Migrate to GCP

The success of the exercise prompted Hike to migrate its messaging app to Google Cloud Platform. “We chose Google Cloud Platform because of its very broad set of services and features,” explains Gupta. “In addition, Google’s innovation mindset and the richness of the partnership would allow us to be onboarded quickly to machine learning services such as Cloud Machine Learning Engine.”

The business called on Google Cloud Professional Services (Technical Account Management) to help ensure a seamless lift-and-shift migration over two months. Google Cloud Professional Services initially undertook a technical infrastructure kickoff to establish a foundation for architecture requirements such as identity and access management and security.

Google Cloud Professional Services team delivers smooth migration

Google Cloud Professional Services worked closely with Hike to map out and deliver the Google Cloud Platform architecture that would deliver the greatest value to the business. The Professional Services team also worked with Hike to resolve product and support queries quickly; provided project background for product and support teams; and organized project meetings and early adopter program access.

In addition, Professional Services team members worked on site at least once a week, coordinated external support during critical migration periods, and coordinated teams in five countries for a single, 17-hour migration marathon. Over 60 days, the business migrated 7,000 processor cores, running virtual machine instances used for messaging infrastructure and analytics, to Google Cloud Platform.

Throughout the exercise, Google Cloud Professional Services worked with CloudCover to educate the customers’ technology teams to achieve proficiency with Google Cloud Platform. The teams soon built up skills and knowledge of best practices and began applying them to the Google Cloud Platform environment.

The Hike Google Cloud Platform architecture comprises virtual machine instances running in Compute Engine; Cloud Storage for unified object storage; networking; a BigQuery analytics data warehouse; Cloud Dataflow to transform and enrich data; Cloud Load Balancing to distribute workloads to maximize efficiency; and Cloud Dataproc to run Hadoop clusters.

Hike is also stepping up its AI & machine learning capabilities. It uses Google Cloud Machine Learning Engine managed, distributed computing capabilities to train complex models on TensorFlow. This powers key use cases such as delightful local sticker recommendations on Hike Sticker Chat. Hike is also investing heavily on AI and machine learning research.

Hike has achieved a range of benefits from its Google Cloud Platform deployment. As well as reduced latency, improved compute throughput, and increased connection handling, Google Cloud Platform managed services have enabled the business to reduce the time and effort required to administer core infrastructure, with the saved resources allocated to improving its messaging product.

“Managed services are beginning to reduce our operational overheads,” says Gupta. “For example, managed instance groups and Cloud Load Balancing are reducing our instance count and costs, thereby reducing involvement from DevOps and developer teams.”

Google Cloud Platform 20% cheaper

Gupta and his team have calculated that running for three years on Google Cloud Platform will cost, including the cost of migration, 20 percent less than on its previous platform. BigQuery is processing queries 20 times faster than a similar service offered by the previous provider, while storing 125TB of data and streaming 1.5TB of data daily. Furthermore, Hike’s analytics pipeline costs 80 percent less than in its previous environment.

“Google Cloud Platform has played an important role in enabling us to continue to innovate and realize our mission of reducing dependency on the keyboard,” says Gupta.

We meet daily with contact center owners and customer experience (CX) execs across all industries, geographies, and business sizes. Looking back at these conversations, it’s crystal clear that 2022 was a high-stakes year for call centers, with three primary challenges trending across all customers and continuing in 2023:

  • Many organizations feel pressure to rapidly scale up their call center operations in response to macroeconomic changes. Uncertain conditions are forcing Contact Centers to be ever more cost-effective, and to find ways to generate revenue for the business.
  • End users are increasingly demanding and less forgiving when it comes to CX. Users have a choice, and they expect brands to meet them where they are with superior experiences. Connecting with customers where they engage is one of the key components of superior CX—customers should not have to go through elaborate processes or unhelpful phone trees to get help but should rather have service available quickly and easily in their preferred channels. Consumers demand more intimate ways of connecting with brands and Conversational AI can create that critical interaction medium. 
  • Organizations understand that AI can help address these challenges. However, many business leaders remain unsure how to successfully make the journey. A growing number of offerings are on the market, but many don’t deliver on their promise, with long and expensive integration requirements and unpredictable and underwhelming outcomes.

Helping our customers successfully address these challenges and opportunities was one of our top priorities last year and will continue to be a significant focus in coming months. In this blog post, we’ll review our Contact Center AI (CCAI) news from last year, as a primer for 2023. 

Looking back: Why 2022 was a big year for Contact Center AI

In 2022, we increased our strategic investment in CCAI, including expanding it to include a comprehensive, end-to-end contact center solution suite that is user-first, AI-first, and cloud-first. We launched Contact Center AI Platform, our Contact Center as a Service (CCaaS) offering, as part of the CCAI product suite that offers a modern, turnkey solution, designed with user-first, AI-first, and cloud-first design. During Google Cloud Next ‘22, we shared lots of great content on how organizations can use CCAI to improve customer experiences, including these breakout sessions:

We also got a chance to hear how customers are using CCAI to better reach their own customers, including Wells Fargo and TIAA. We partnered with CDW to discuss Providing Better Customer Experiences and with Quantiphi in a webinar called “Elevating the Banking Experience with CCAI Platform.” Just recently, our customer Segra shared their success story.

Through these customer interactions, three key priorities have surfaced as we look forward to 2023: Elevate the customer experience, bring new forms of AI to drive new automation and accelerate time to value.

Looking forward: Elevate CX, integrate new forms of AI, accelerate time to value 

1. User-first: Meet them where they are with elevated Customer Experience.

As we have learned, users expect that brands meet them where they are and on their own terms and expectations. To do that, brands must integrate with and adopt the latest user-centric technologies and product best practices from consumer mobile and web apps. Enterprise B2C can’t exist anymore in a parallel world of different and often inferior user experience. Google has over 20 years of experience in building such consumer experiences, with multiple products successfully serving billions of users. Bringing these capabilities and experiences from our consumer products and research teams to our cloud offerings was a key component for our product offerings in 2022 and is a big part of our key investments in 2023. Moreover, a vast majority of CX user journeys start with a query on Google Search or YouTube. Connecting with the users at that point, even before they reach out directly to the contact center is a win-win, saving money for the brand and delivering immediate value to the user. By focusing on the user we created a superior  integrated omnichannel experience.

2. AI-first and cloud-first: Quality contact center growth depends on transforming to modern, Cloud, AI solutions.

For contact centers to evolve, they need to transform from cost centers to revenue generators. That requires modern Cloud and AI solutions. Conversational data spans across all parts of the contact center, opening new ways to generate value. Cloud capabilities of privacy, security and scale can enable personalized CX across channels, enabling key omnichannel experiences. From a study by McKinsey: “Cross-channel integration and migration issues continue to hamper progress. For example, 77 percent of survey respondents report that their organizations have built digital platforms, but only 10 percent report that those platforms are fully scaled and adopted by customers. Only 12 percent of digital platforms are highly integrated, and, for most organizations, only 20 percent of digital contacts are unassisted.” Traditional telephony technologies are becoming commoditized and struggle to keep up with ever more complex rule based systems. Leaders in applicative AI and Cloud technology are stepping up as the new partners for brands who understand they need to take the leap to the next generation CX solutions. .  

3. Accelerating time to value while future proofing investments with predictable and measurable value

Reducing upfront implementation investment and accelerating time to value can be a challenge for contact center solutions. Scaling Cloud and AI can provide a faster path advanced conversational AI, can help address these challenges. Let’s look at three examples:

  • Out of the Box(OOTB) integrated transcription, chat and voice summarization, and topic modeling — This saves customers money by reducing agent handling time for every chat and call, as well as providing valuable insights that can be used for quality management, contact center optimization and automation, agent and user churn prediction, business insights, and revenue opportunities.
  • AI based chat and voice calls steering  paired with info-seeking virtual agents — Together these deliver higher Customer Satisfaction at scale while reducing cost –  by significantly reducing waiting queues and being routed to the wrong agent, as well as automating away total handling time.
  • Reduced time to full automation — Reduce the complexity of conversation modeling, prebuilt components and APIs for shorter time to value and more predictable outcomes, and metrics driven ML-Dev & QA tools and playbooks.

With these new capabilities, our customers can now see results as soon as they implement CCAI. We’re excited to get our customers to where they want to be faster!

Gartner's evaluation covers Google Cloud’s core data analytics offerings, including BigQuery, Cloud Dataproc, and Cloud Dataflow. Here are some of the key takeaways.

As organizations continue to produce vast quantities of data, they increasingly need platforms that allow them to analyze, store, and extract meaningful insights from that data. And research from analyst firms like Gartner offer an important way for organizations to evaluate and compare cloud data warehouse providers.

Earlier this year, Gartner named Google a Leader in the 2019 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Data Management Solutions for Analytics (DMSA) (report available here). This evaluation covers Google Cloud’s core data analytics offerings, including BigQuery, a serverless, managed data warehouse, Cloud Dataproc, a managed Spark and Hadoop service, and Cloud Dataflow, which enables you to stream and batch-process your data. Here are a few takeaways:

Simplicity and speed

BigQuery’s performance permits complex queries on large-scale data sets to return in seconds, and a substantial number of BigQuery customers maintain data warehouses that store more than 50 terabytes (and a few customers now use more than 100 petabytes). More than half of these customers are loading data either continuously or many times per day. These customers value the ability to extract, transform, load, and analyze their data on a serverless platform, all without maintaining any underlying infrastructure.

A versatile serverless data warehouse

One of BigQuery’s major advantages is its ability to allow customers to address a wide variety of use cases—from a traditional data warehouse to data science. Over the past year, we’ve worked hard to introduce new features in BigQuery like data types for financial and monetary uses, BigQuery GIS for geospatial data, and machine learning capabilities through BigQuery ML. BigQuery’s continuous ingest capabilities make it suitable for an operational—or a real-time—serverless data warehouse.

An expanding ecosystem

With overall increased market adoption, our analytics offerings continue to benefit from a fast-growing partner ecosystem of service providers, and business intelligence (BI) and data integration vendors. In particular, in 2018 we expanded our partnerships with established industry providers, including Confluent, Dell Boomi, Informatica, Looker, Reltio, Tableau, and ThoughtSpot.

More and more organizations are finding value in Google Cloud’s serverless data warehouse and analytics offerings.
