Today, we are putting the power of Google’s insights and intelligence in the hands of risk, fraud, and security teams everywhere. We are pleased to announce the general availability of reCAPTCHA Enterprise Fraud Prevention, a new product that uses Google’s own fraud models, machine learning, and intelligence from protecting more than 6 million websites to help stop payment fraud.
reCAPTCHA Enterprise Fraud Prevention can help protect payment transactions by identifying targeted manual attacks and large-scale fraud attempts. It automatically trains fraud models based on behavior and transaction data to identify events that are likely fraudulent and could cause a dispute or chargeback if accepted.
When threat actors are identified and blocked on any site in the reCAPTCHA network, the intelligence is made available to help protect other organizations from those same attackers. Organizations can then use the scores to send the transaction for manual review or directly block suspicious transactions, drive increased trust in their legitimate transactions, reduce the amount of friction for good users, and reduce erroneous rejection rates.

reCAPTCHA Enterprise provides a comprehensive online fraud detection platform that helps prevent fraudulent, spammy, and abusive digital client activity across your web and application footprint. This platform includes Account Defender, which protects users from account takeovers (ATO), frictionless bot management capabilities, and password leak detection to identify compromised accounts. With an additional API call for Fraud Prevention, organizations can leverage a comprehensive solution to secure financial transactions along with core reCAPTCHA Enterprise capabilities.
To get started, organizations can install a score-based site key on each part of the payment user flow front end and send transaction data when a purchase occurs. This site key helps train site-specific fraud models and start returning fraud scores for each transaction.

Thwart Ransomware Threats with Google Cloud’s 5 Pillars of Protection

Ransomware, a form of malware that encrypts a user’s or organization’s most important files or data rendering them unreadable, isn’t a novel threat in the world of computer security. These destructive, financially-motivated attacks where cybercriminals demand payment to decrypt data and restore access have been studied and documented for many years. Today’s reality shows us that these attacks have become more pervasive, impacting essential services like healthcare or pumping gasoline. Yet despite attempts to stop this threat, ransomware continues to impact organizations across all industries, significantly disrupting business processes and critical national infrastructure services and leaving many organizations looking to better protect themselves. Organizations that continue to rely on legacy systems are especially vulnerable to ransomware threats, as these systems may not be regularly patched and maintained.
For more than 20 years Google has been operating securely in the cloud, using our modern technology stack to provide a more defensible environment that we can protect at scale. We strive to make our security innovations available in our platforms and products for customers to use as well. This underpins our work to be the industry’s most trusted cloud, and while the threat of ransomware isn’t new, our responsibility to help protect you from existing or emerging threats never changes. In this post, we share guidance on how organizations can increase their resilience to ransomware and how some of our Cloud products and services can help.
Develop a comprehensive, defensive security posture to protect against ransomware
Robust protection against ransomware (and many other threats) requires multiple layers of defense. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) outlines five main functions in the Cybersecurity Framework that serve as the primary pillars for a successful and comprehensive cybersecurity program in any public or private sector organization. Below are the recommendations from NIST and examples of how our Cloud technologies can help address ransomware threats:
Pillar #1 – Identify: Develop an understanding of what cybersecurity risks you need to manage for the scope of your assets, systems, data, people, and capabilities. In the case of ransomware, this covers which systems or processes are most likely to be targeted in a ransomware attack, and what the business impact would be if specific systems were rendered inoperable. This will help prioritize and focus efforts to manage risks.
Our CISO Guide to Security Transformation whitepaper outlines steps for a risk-informed, rather than risk-avoidance, approach to security with the cloud. A risk-informed approach can help you address the most important security risks, instead of addressing the risks that you already know how to mitigate. Cloud service providers make this risk-informed approach easier and more efficient for you by developing and maintaining many of the controls and tools that you need to mitigate modern security threats. Services like Cloud Asset Inventory provide a mechanism to discover, monitor, and analyze all your assets in one place for tasks like IT ops, security analytics, auditing, and governance.
Pillar #2 – Protect: Create safeguards to ensure delivery of critical services and business processes to limit or contain the impact of a potential cybersecurity incident or attack. In the case of ransomware, these safeguards may include frameworks like zero trust that protect and strongly authenticate user access and device integrity, segment environments, authenticate executables, reduce phishing risk, filter spam and malware, integrate endpoint protection, patch consistently and provide continuous controls assurance. Some examples of products and strategies to involve in this step include:
- A cloud-native, inherently secure email platform: Email is at the heart of many ransomware attacks. It can be exploited to phish credentials for illegitimate network access and/or to distribute ransomware binaries directly. Advanced phishing and malware protection in Gmail provides controls to quarantine emails, defends against anomalous attachment types, and protects from inbound spoofing emails. Security Sandbox detects the presence of previously unknown malware in attachments. As a result, Gmail prevents more than 99.9 percent of spam, phishing, and malware from reaching users’ inboxes. Unlike frequently-exploited legacy on-premises email systems, Gmail is continually and automatically updated with the latest security improvements and protections to help keep your organization’s email safe.
- Strong protection against account takeovers: Compromised accounts allow ransomware operators to gain a foothold in victim organizations, perform reconnaissance, get unauthorized access to data and install malicious binaries. Google’s Advanced Protection Program provides the strongest defense against account takeovers and has yet to see a user that participates in the program be successfully phished. Further, Google Cloud employs many layers of machine learning systems for anomaly detection to differentiate between safe and anomalous user activity across browsers, devices, application logins, and other usage events.
- Zero trust access controls that limit attacker access and lateral movement: BeyondCorp Enterprise provides a turnkey solution for implementing zero trust access to your key business applications and resources. In a zero trust access model, authorized users are granted point-in-time access to individual apps, not the entire corporate network, and permissions are continuously evaluated to determine if access is still valid. This prevents the lateral movement across the network that ransomware attackers rely on to hunt for sensitive data and spread infections. BeyondCorp’s protections can even be applied to RDP access to resources, one of the most common ways that ransomware attackers gain and maintain access to insecure legacy Windows Server environments.
- Enterprise threat protections for Chrome: Leveraging Google Safe Browsing technology, Chrome warns users of millions of malware downloads each week. Threat protection in BeyondCorp Enterprise delivered through Chrome can prevent infections from previously unknown malware including ransomware, with real-time URL checks and deep scanning of files.

- Endpoints designed for security: Chromebooks are designed to protect against phishing and ransomware attacks with a low on-device footprint, read-only, constantly invisibly updating Operating System, sandboxing, verified boot, Safe Browsing and Titan-C security chips. Rollout of ChromeOS devices for users who work primarily in a browser can reduce an organization’s attack surface, such as relying too much on legacy Windows devices, which have been found to often be vulnerable to attacks.
Pillar #3 – Detect: Define continuous ways to monitor your organization and identify potential cybersecurity events or incidents. In the case of ransomware, this may include watching for intrusion attempts, deploying Data Loss Prevention (DLP) solutions to detect exfiltration of sensitive data from your organization, and scanning for early signs of ransomware execution and propagation.
The ability to spot and stop malicious activity associated with ransomware as early as possible is key to preventing business disruptions. Chronicle is a threat detection solution that identifies threats, including ransomware, at unparalleled speed and scale. Google Cloud Threat Intelligence for Chronicle surfaces highly actionable threats based on Google’s collective insight and research into Internet-based threats. Threat Intel for Chronicle allows you to focus on real threats in the environment and accelerate your response time.
DLP technologies are also useful in helping detect data that could be appealing to ransomware operators. With data discovery capabilities like Cloud DLP, you can detect sensitive data that’s accessible to the public when it should not be and detect access credentials in exposed code.
Pillar #4 – Respond: Activate an incident response program within your organization that can help contain the impact of a security (in this case, ransomware) event.
During a ransomware attack or security incident, it’s critical to secure your communications both internally to your teams and externally to your partners and customers. Many organizations with legacy Office deployments have shifted to Google Workspace because it offers a more standardized and secure online collaboration suite, and in the event of a security incident, a new instance can quickly be stood up to provide a separate, secure environment for response actions.
Pillar #5 – Recover: Build a cyber resilience program and back-up strategy to prepare for how you can restore core systems or assets affected by a security (in this case, ransomware) incident. This is a critical function for supporting recovery timelines and lessening the impact of a cyber event so you can get back to operating your business.
Immediately after a ransomware attack, a safe point-in-time backup image that is known not to be infected must be identified. Actifio GO provides scalable and efficient incremental data protection and a unique near-instant recovery capability for data. This near-instant recovery facilitates identifying a clean restore point quickly, enabling resumption of business functions rapidly. Actifio GO is infrastructure-agnostic and can protect applications on-premises and in the cloud.
In Google Workspace, if files on your computer were infected with malware but you sync them to Google Drive, you may be able to recover those files. Additionally, ensuring that you have a strong risk transfer program in place, like our Risk Protection Program, is a critical element of a comprehensive approach to managing cyber risk.
Key ransomware prevention and mitigation considerations for business and IT leaders
As you plan for a comprehensive defense posture against ransomware threats, here are some key questions to consider:
- Does your organization have a ransomware plan, and what does it entail? Remember to demand a strong partnership with your cloud providers based on a shared understanding of risk and security objectives.
- How are you defending your organization’s data, systems and employees against malware?
- Are your organization’s systems up to date and patched continuously?
- Are you watching for data exfiltration or other irregularities?
- What is your comprehensive zero trust approach, especially strongly authenticating my employees when they access information?
- Are you taking the right back ups to high assurance immutable locations and testing that they are working properly? This should include testing that does a periodic restore of key assets and data.
- What drills are you conducting to battle-test your organization’s risk management and response to cyber events or incidents?
Ransomware attacks will continue to evolve
Recently, ransomware groups have evolved their tactics to include stealing data prior to it being encrypted, with the threat of extorting this data through leaks. Additionally, some ransomware operators have used the threat of distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks against victim organizations as an attempt to further compel them to pay ransoms. DDoS attacks can also serve as a distraction, occupying security teams while attackers seek to accomplish other objectives such as data exfiltration or encryption of business-critical data. By deploying Google Cloud Armor — which can scale to absorb massive DDoS attacks— you can help protect services deployed in Google Cloud, other clouds, or on-premise against DDoS attacks.
Protecting against ransomware is a critical issue for all organizations, and these questions and best practices are only the start of building a mature and resilient cybersecurity posture. It’s important to remember that you can’t focus on a single piece of defense; you need a comprehensive cybersecurity program that enables you to identify, prevent, detect, respond, and recover from threats. Above all, you need a range of solutions from a battle-tested and highly-resilient cloud platform that works across these elements in an integrated way with your business. New Certificate Manager Helps Leverage Google’s Network Security and Performance

We’re excited to announce the public preview of Certificate Manager and its integration with External HTTPS Load Balancing. Certificate Manager enables you to use External HTTPS Load Balancing with as many certificates or domains as you need. You can bring your own TLS certificates and keys if you have an existing certificate lifecycle management solution you’d like to use with Google Cloud, or enjoy the convenience of our fully Managed TLS offerings.
Extend the security and performance of the Google network to your customers
Certificate Manager brings support for multiple certificates per customer. When coupled with our global anycast load balancing solution with automated autoscaling and failover, you now have a powerful platform for building robust SaaS and PaaS offerings. This enables custom domain support for your customers with the lowest latency and the highest level of availability.
Alon Kochba, the head of web performance at website-building service Wix, explained how the new features lighten their workload.
“As a SaaS product, we need to terminate SSL for millions of custom domains and certificates. GCP’s Certificate Manager and External HTTPS Load Balancing lets us do this at the edge, close to the clients, without having to rely on our own custom solution for terminating SSL,” Kochba said.
Customers who switch to External HTTPS Load Balancing can also now protect their SaaS users from denial of service attacks, OWASP Top 10 risks, and other common Web attacks by adopting Cloud Armor.
DNS authorization
This release also now enables you to provision your Google-managed certificates with DNS-based authorizations and have them ready to use before your load-balancing production environment is fully set up. This will help streamline the migration process to Google Cloud, for example. To create a DNS authorization, use the following command:
gcloud beta certificate-manager dns-authorizations create example-authorization --domain="example.com"
This command returns the CNAME record for _acme-challenge.example.com that you must add to your DNS configuration in the DNS zone of the target domain. This CNAME record points to a special Google Cloud domain, e.g.: “534959-1a8a-40cf-90b6-b1f5f8d22517.2.authorize.certificatemanager.goog” that is used to verify domain ownership.
When you request a certificate based on the above authorization, Cloud Certificate Manager will work with the Certificate Authority automatically to get and later renew your certificate for that domain.
Wildcard support
This DNS-based domain control authorization also allows us to bring you support for wildcard certificates. To configure the use of wildcard certificates you first must configure the DNS authorization as we’ve indicated above. Once that has been completed, you can configure the use of a wildcard certificate using the following command. Our example below is for a top-level registered domain and its wildcard subdomains.
gcloud beta certificate-manager certificates create example-wildcard-certificate --domains="example.com,*.example.com" --dns-authorizations="example-authorization"
Monitoring for Certificate Expiration
Another new feature that will be enabled with this product is the ability to monitor certificate expiration with Google Cloud Logging. Cloud Logging creates a record of certificate expiration, uses the `certificatemanager.googleapis.com/Project` monitored resource, and is represented by the following message:

The log message is delivered every hour and contains a sample of the certificates being close to expiry or already expired.
Pricing
The best part is that there’s no additional charge to use the Certificate Manager for the first 100 certificates. To use more than 100 certificates with the management tools, we will charge on a per-certificate, per-month pricing structure. This empowers you to scale up to as many certificates as you need, and as cost-effectively as possible. The pricing will be enabled when the solution goes to General Availability.

It is our hope that these new features, combined with the programmability offered by Certificate Manager, will enable you to simplify the way you deploy HTTPS and offer a more scalable and secure service to your customers.

Google Cloud & Health-ISAC’s EMEA Collaborate to Boost Healthcare Security

Last July, Google Cloud launched our ambassador partnership with the Health Information Sharing and Analysis Center (Health-ISAC) and committed to working with industry leaders to better protect our healthcare ecosystem. Securing healthcare technology and data is a global challenge, and to meet it security professionals need to have better channels for sharing information and effective security practices.
To that end, we’re pleased to announce that our relationship with Health-ISAC is now expanding to include CISOs and security leaders in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA).
On May 23, 2023, we’ll join the Health-ISAC on a 17-city tour across the region, starting in Zurich, Switzerland, as part of its European Healthcare Threat Landscape Tour. In each session, we will bring together experts from across the region with cybersecurity practitioners from the Health-ISAC, Google Cloud, law enforcement, and regulatory bodies.
Our goals is to focus the discussions on several topics:
- How the threat landscape is unique to each country we visit;
- How we can better share threat intelligence;
- What are the emerging European laws and regulations that can affect healthcare and cybersecurity;
- How ransomware continues to evolve and the threat that poses to healthcare; organizations;
- What we can do to improve cyber incident response;
- What impact digital sovereignty can have on European healthcare;
- And which initiatives Health-ISAC and Google Cloud are launching to better protect Europe’s healthcare system.
The timing for the tour could not come at a more critical time. Ransomware and digital extortion threatens healthcare and its subsectors, with national health systems in Ireland, UK, Germany, and Spain all recently experiencing extended outages because of ransomware. Threat actors continue to target proprietary data at biotechnology and pharmaceutical firms. Meanwhile, existing regulations such as the Digital Markets Act and GDPR, and new regulations such as the NIS2 Directive (Directive (EU) 2022/2555), which seek to protect EU citizens and businesses from risks posed by the digital world, are raising the bar that CISOs and security leaders must surpass to ensure their businesses can stay compliant and able compete in the global digital economy.

At AirAsia, we operate a fleet of more than 270 aircraft across 23 markets, fly to more than 150 destinations and carry 100m guests each year. We’ve also been named the world’s best low-cost carrier for 11 years running. To accomplish all of this, we rely heavily on our 22,000 Allstars (employees). As AirAsia co-founder Tony Fernandes likes to say, “it has always been about the people.”
With Cloud Identity in place, our IT department can spend less time worrying about managing multiple on-premises directory servers and and can instead focus on delivering value to our Allstar employees.

In my role as CIO, it’s critical that I give our Allstars the tools and technology they need to get their jobs done, while at the same time ensuring that our company’s data is protected and secure. While this is challenging enough in normal circumstances, we’re also in the midst of rapidly moving from legacy on-premises technologies to the cloud. Google Cloud has been a critical partner for us in this journey.
Identity Challenges
AirAsia, like many other enterprises, has relied on a legacy on-premises directory for many years. As our company has quickly grown and expanded to new markets and regions, we’ve had to manage multiple servers across a number of on-premises data centers and the public cloud, which has proved costly and time-consuming.
Our Allstars, located all across Asia, need to easily access a number of legacy on-premises apps in addition to a growing number of SaaS apps. As a business, we also needed a more seamless integration between our HR system of record and our identity solution for user provisioning and lifecycle management.
Deploying Cloud Identity is a key step towards enabling the BeyondCorp (or zero trust) security model, which we feel is the best approach to strengthen our security posture and fight modern threats.

Solving these challenges with our existing on-premises directory was simply not feasible for us.
In recent years, we partnered with Google Cloud to help drive our digital transformation, including moving dozens of workloads and apps to Google Cloud Platform (GCP), deploying G Suite as our collaboration and productivity solution for all of our employees, and replacing thousands of Windows laptops with fast and secure Chromebooks.
We brought up our identity concerns with the Google Cloud team, and after a number of conversations, we decided to deploy Cloud Identity, Google’s cloud-based identity and access management solution, to help address the identity challenges we were facing.
Why Cloud Identity for AirAsia?
We ended up choosing Cloud Identity for a few key reasons. Here at AirAsia, we are eager to move to the cloud as quickly as possible, and moving identity management to the cloud is a key enabler of this and our broader digital transformation. Managing identities from the cloud also enables us to have a single identity and set of credentials for each employee, which they can use to access all of the applications they need to be productive, both in the cloud and on-premises.
In addition, deploying Cloud Identity is a key step towards enabling the BeyondCorp (or zero trust) security model, which we feel is the best approach to strengthen our security posture and fight modern threats.
Cloud Identity also integrates seamlessly with our existing technologies, which includes not only Google Cloud products like GCP, G Suite, and Chrome OS, but also third party tools like Citrix, Papercut, and others.
And finally, Cloud Identity offered us significant cost and resource savings. With Cloud Identity in place, our IT department can spend less time worrying about managing multiple on-premises directory servers and and can instead focus on delivering value to our Allstar employees.
