Organizations large and small are realizing that digital transformation and the changing threat landscape require a grounds up effort to transform security. At Google Cloud, we continue to invest in our vision of invisible security where advanced capabilities are engineered into our platforms, operations are simplified, and stronger security outcomes can be achieved.

We made five major security announcements at Google Cloud Next:

Today at Next ‘22, we’re introducing additional new security products, partnerships, and solutions across security analytics, anti-fraud measures, device security, Zero Trust, and open source software security to help our customers around the world address their most pressing security challenges.

Our Assured Open Source Software service, which we announced earlier this year, is now available in Preview. Assured OSS enables enterprise and public sector users of open source software to easily incorporate the same trusted OSS packages that Google uses into their own developer workflows. You can sign up for the Preview of Assured OSS here.

Security teams must continually measure and manage risk in their cloud environments. Earlier this year we acquired Foreseeti, a startup focused on attack simulation and risk quantification. We’re excited to announce that the integration of Foreseeti’s groundbreaking technology, which can help teams understand their exposure and prioritize contextualized vulnerability findings, will be coming to Security Command Center in Preview in Q4. Security Command Center will use Forseeti’s advanced attack path simulations to help you apply targeted remediations before attackers can take advantage of high-risk vulnerabilities.

To help organizations better manage risks in their online channels, reCAPTCHA Enterprise and Signifyd will partner to bring to market a joint anti-fraud and abuse solution. This solution will combine the behavioral analysis capabilities of reCAPTCHA Enterprise with the anti-fraud capabilities of Signifyd to help enterprises reduce abuse, account takeovers, and payment fraud.

We continue to invest in new initiatives with our BeyondCorp Alliance partners. Palo Alto Networks customers can now pair Prisma Access with BeyondCorp Enterprise Essentials to help secure private and SaaS app access while mitigating internet threats across managed and unmanaged devices with a secure enterprise browsing experience.

We now package best practices and implementation experience for our customers in Zero Trust Advisory solutions. Our Cybersecurity Action Team and select partners can help guide you through the Zero Trust journey with exploratory workshops, architecture reviews, customized recommendations, and implementation support.

Google Cloud Armor, which was instrumental in stopping the largest Layer 7 DDoS attack to date, was named a Strong Performer in The Forrester Wave™: Web Application Firewalls, Q3 2022. This is our debut in the WAF Wave, and it’s encouraging to see the recognition for the product in this market segment.

Google Workspace has received several security updates and advances. They bring data loss prevention (DLP) to Google Chat to help prevent sensitive information leaks, new Trust rules for Google Drive for more granular control of internal and external sharing, and Client-side encryption (CSE) in Gmail and Google Calendar to help address a broad range of data sovereignty and compliance requirements. Private Services Connect in Google Cloud Regions Enables Customers to Consume Services Faster

Google's Private Service Connect is now available for customers to create private and secure connections from their cloud networks to services like Cloud Storage or Cloud Bigtable and third-party services like Elastic, MongoDB or Snowflake!

At Google Cloud, we believe in making it simple and secure to consume services whether they’re from Google, a third party or customer-owned. With Private Service Connect, we have adopted a service-centric approach to our network that abstracts the underlying networking infrastructure. And today, we are announcing Private Service Connect is generally available in all Google Cloud regions.

Private Service Connect allows you to create private and secure connections from your cloud networks to services like Cloud Storage or Cloud Bigtable and third-party services like Elastic, MongoDB or Snowflake. It creates service endpoints in your VPCs that provide private connectivity and policy enforcement, allowing you to easily connect to services across different networks and organizations.

Customers told us they want to consume services faster while making sure that the connectivity is private and secure. In the past, achieving this was a challenge: networking teams had to negotiate IP address blocks, mutually agree on policies and coordinate as applications evolved to newer versions. With Private Service Connect, you can delegate the consumption and delivery of services to different teams without having to coordinate between teams.

How it works

Private Service Connect makes it easy to consume services by leveraging service endpoints that are locally managed. The services can be in different projects or managed by different organizations. Access to the service is controlled by strict governance and IAM policies. Application teams and developers can focus on delivering their services easily by exposing their ‘service attachment’. No more worrying about networking constructs—Private Service Connect takes care of connecting to the service on the Google backbone for them.  

Benefits to our partners

Being able to consume services from a variety of software vendors and service providers makes it possible for enterprises to innovate faster. For that, developers need to be able to compose services from third-party vendors, Google managed services, as well as their own services. To help, third-party partners can use Private Service Connect to deliver multi-tenant services securely and at massive scale, and make the connectivity to their services appear as if they are running on the enterprises’ network. Private Service Connect will also integrate with Service Directory to register many producer services, making service consumption even simpler.

Gaming company and its subsidiaries tapped into new markets and new users which required centralized platform to monitor data and application security across systems. Google Cloud and Splunk addressed this requirement and ups the gaming experiences!

Since Aristocrat’s founding in 1953, technology has constantly transformed gaming and the digital demands on our gaming business are a far cry from challenges we faced when we started. As we continue to expand globally, security and compliance are top priorities.

Managing IT security for several gaming subsidiaries and our core business became more complex as we entered into new markets and scaled up our number of users. We needed a centralized platform that could give us full visibility into all of our systems and efficient monitoring capabilities to keep data and applications secure. We also needed the ability to secure our systems without compromising user experiences.

We turned to Google Cloud and Splunk to better manage complexity and support highly efficient, secure, and more dynamic gaming experiences for everyone. We are committed to using today’s modern technologies to give players more optimal experiences.

Bringing our digital footprint into the cloud


When we set out on our digital transformation, we looked to address many business requirements.

These requirements included:

  • Regulation: We wanted a platform that could efficiently address our industry’s stringent and global regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Player experience: Our IT environment must support smooth gaming experiences to keep users engaged and satisfied.
  • Scalability: As we grow and diversify, meeting the changing demands of an increasingly global gaming community, we need an easily scalable platform to align with our current and future needs.

Google Cloud offered us the perfect foundation through solutions such as Compute Engine, Google Kubernetes Engine, BigQuery, and Google Cloud Storage. These acted as the right infrastructure components for us for the following reasons:

  • Google Cloud is globally accessible and supports compliance, helping to streamline security and regulatory processes for our team.
  • With Google Cloud, we can manage our entire development and delivery processes globally with fast and efficient reconciliation of regional compliance requirements.
  • When we need to adjust existing infrastructure or deliver new capabilities, Google Cloud accelerates the process and takes the heavy lifting off of our team.
  • Google Cloud allows us to support tens of thousands of players on each of our apps while experiencing minimal downtime and low latency. The importance of this support can’t be underestimated in an industry where players have little to no patience if lags in games occur.

We migrated our back-office IT stack alongside our consumer-facing production applications to Google Cloud given our positive experiences with compliance, security, scalability, and process management. This migration has significantly accelerated our digital transformation while streamlining our infrastructure for faster and more cost-effective performance.

In many ways, Google Cloud has been, with maybe a pun intended, a game-changer for us. For instance, when we suddenly had to support a lot of remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic, native identity and access management tools in Google Cloud allowed us to retire costly VPNs used for backend access and quickly adopt a more easily managed, cost-effective zero-trust security posture.

Accessing vital third-party partners and managed services


Aristocrat has many IT needs best addressed in a multi-cloud environment. Google Cloud is particularly attractive given its strong cloud interoperability, as well as the many products and services available on Google Cloud Marketplace. The marketplace accelerated our deployment of key third-party apps including Splunk and Qualys.

Given the personal information we store and the global regulatory compliance statutes we must oblige, security lies at the heart of our business. Splunk is a critical component of our digital transformation because it offers solutions that provide the enhanced monitoring capabilities and visibility we need. The integration between Splunk and Google Cloud gives us confidence that our data is secure. We know our data can be secure in Google Cloud, while simplified billing through Google Cloud Marketplace makes payments and license tracking easier for our procurement team.

As part of our protected environment, we use the Splunk platform as our security information and event management system, leveraging the InfoSec app for Splunk that provides continuous monitoring and advanced threat detection to significantly improve our security.

We can manipulate and present data in Splunk in a way that provides us with a single pane-of-glass for our hybrid, multi-cloud environment and our third-party apps and systems. Splunk observability tools have likewise helped us to track browser-based applications like our online gaming apps to monitor details related to security and performance.

Splunk and Google Cloud have transformed how we operate. We can now quickly ingest and analyze data at scale within our refined approach to security management by offloading software management to Splunk and Google Cloud. This ability enables us to approach security more strategically, and positions us to integrate more AI/ML capabilities into our products for even greater governance and performance.

This is just the beginning of our journey with Splunk and Google Cloud. We’re excited to see the innovation we can continue bringing to the gaming community worldwide.

Google Cloud Announces General Availability of BigQuery Row-level Security

Google Cloud announces the general availability of BigQuery row-level security (RLS) to control access to data subsets in the same table for different user groups. Learn how RLS helps data professionals with more peace of mind.

Data security is an ongoing concern for anyone managing a data warehouse. Organizations need to control access to data, down to the granular level, for secure access to data both internally and externally. With the complexity of data platforms increasing day by day, it’s become even more critical to identify and monitor access to sensitive data. In many cases, sensitive data is co-mingled with non-sensitive data, and access restrictions to sensitive data need to be enabled based on factors like data location or presence of financial information. There may also be nuances where data is sensitive for some groups of users, while for others, it is not. 

Today, we’re pleased to announce the general availability of BigQuery row-level security, which gives customers a way to control access to subsets of data in the same table for different groups of users. Row-level security (RLS) extends the principle of least privilege access and enables fine-grained access control policies in BigQuery tables. BigQuery currently supports access controls at the project-dataset-table- and column-level. Adding RLS to the portfolio of access controls now enables customers to filter and define access to specific rows in a table based on qualifying user conditions—providing much needed peace of mind for data professionals. 

“Our digital transformation and migration of data to the cloud magnifies the business value we can extract from our information assets. However, granular data access control is essential to comply with international regulatory and contractual requirements. BigQuery row-level security helps us comply with data residency and export restrictions,” says Jarrett Garcia, Iron Mountain’s Enterprise Data Platform Senior Director. “It enables us to manage fine-grained access controls without replicating data. What used to take months for approval and access provisioning can now be done more efficiently and effectively. We are looking forward to implementing additional data security capabilities on the BigQuery roadmap to address other critical business use cases.”

How BigQuery row-level security works

Row-level security in BigQuery enables different user personas access to subsets of data in the same table. Customers who are currently using authorized views to enable these use cases can leverage RLS for ease of management. To express the concept of RLS, we have introduced a new entity in BigQuery called row access policy. Row access policies map a group of user principals to the rows that they can see, defined by a SQL filter predicate. 

Secure logic rules created by data owners and administrators determines which user can see which rows through the creation of a row-level access policy. The row-level access policies created on a target table by administrators or data owners are applied when a query is run on the table. One table can have multiple policies applied to it.

Below is an example, where row-level access policies have been created to filter data based on users’ “region”.

In the illustrated scenario above, row-level access policies have been created to verify a querying user’s region and to give them access only to the subset of data relevant to that region. Access policies are granted to a grantee list which support all types of IAM principles such as individual users, groups, domains or service accounts. In this example, when a user queries the table, row-level access policies are evaluated to assess which, if any, policies are applicable to that user. The group ‘sales-apac’ is granted access to view a subset of rows where region = ‘APAC’ whereas the group ‘sales-us’ is granted access to view a subset of rows where the region = ’US’. Likewise, users in both groups will see rows in both regions, and users in neither group will not see any rows.

Row-level access policies can also be created using the SESSION_USER() function to restrict access only to rows that belong to the user running the query. If none of the row access policies are applicable to the querying user, the user will have no access to the data in the table.

When a user queries a table with a row-level access policy, BigQuery displays a banner notice indicating that their results may be filtered by a row-level access policy. This notice displays even if the user is a member of the `grantee_list`.

When to put BigQuery row-level security to work

Row-level access policies are useful when you have a need to limit access to data based on filter conditions. The row-access policies’ filter predicate supports arbitrary SQL, and is conceptually similar to the WHERE clause of a SQL query. Filter predicates support the SESSION_USER() function to restrict access only to rows that belong to the user running the query. If none of the row access policies are applicable to the querying user, the user will have no access to the data in the table. Currently, the column used for filtering must be in the table, but we anticipate adding support for subqueries in the filter expression, opening up access to use cases where data is filtered based on lookup tables and calculated values. Row-level access policies can be created, updated and dropped using DDL statements. You will be able to see the list of row-level access policies applied to a table using the BigQuery schema pane in the Cloud Console,  which simplifies the management of policies per table, or by using the bq command-line tool.

Row-level security is compatible with other BigQuery security features, and can be used along with column-level security for further granularity.  Since row-level access policies are applied on the source tables, any actions performed on the table will inherit the table’s associated access policies, to ensure access to secure data is protected. Row-level access policies are applicable to every method used to access BigQuery data (API, Views, etc).

Hence, Google Cloud encrypts and authenticates all data in transit at one or more network layers when data moves outside physical boundaries not controlled by Google or on behalf of Google. Data in transit inside a physical boundary controlled by or on behalf of Google is generally authenticated but not necessarily encrypted.
