Built with BigQuery: Retailers Unlock the Value of Data with SoundCommerce

As economic conditions change, retail brands’ reliance on ever-growing customer demand puts these companies at financial and even existential risk. Top-line revenue and active customer growth do not equal profitable growth.

Despite multi-billion dollar valuations for some brands, especially those operating the direct-to-consumer model, the rising costs of meeting shoppers’ high expectations (i.e. free shipping, free returns) along with the escalating cost of goods, fulfillment operations, and delivery costs, create pressure for brands to turn a profit. The ONLY way brands drive profitable growth is by managing variable costs in real-time. This in turn mandates adopting modern data cloud infrastructure including Google Cloud services such as BigQuery.

To unlock the value of data, Google Cloud has partnered with SoundCommerce, a retail data and analytics platform that offers a unique way of connecting marketing, merchandising, and operations data and modeling it within a retail context – all so brands can optimize profitability across the business.

Profitability can be measured per order through short-term metrics like contribution profit or long-term metrics like Customer Lifetime Value (CLV). Often, retailers calculate CLV as a measure of revenue with no consideration for the variable costs of serving that customer, for instance: the costs of marketing, discounting, delivering orders to the doorstep, or post-conversion operational exceptions (e.g. cancellations, returns).

What may first appear to be a high lifetime value customer through revenue-based CLV models, may not be profitable at all. By connecting marketing, merchandising, and operations data together, brands can understand their most profitable programs, channels, and products through the lens of actual customer value – and optimize accordingly.

The journey for brands starts with the awareness and data enablement of a more complex data set containing all variable revenue, cost, and margin inputs. What does a retailer need to do to achieve this?

  1. All data together in one place
  2. Matched and deduplicated disparate data
  3. Data is organized into entities and concepts that business decision makers can understand
  4. A common definition of key business metrics (this is especially important yet challenging for retailers because systems are siloed by the department and common KPIs like contribution profit per order may be defined differently across a company)
  5. Branched outputs for actionability: BI dashboards vs. data activation to improve marginal profit.

Once brands understand these requirements, up next is execution. This responsibility may fall within a ‘build’ strategy on the shoulders of technical IT/data leadership and their team(s) within a brand. This offers maximum control but at maximum cost and time-to-value. Retail data sources are complicated and change often. Technical teams within brands can spend too much time building and maintaining the tactical data ingestion process, which means they are spending less time deriving business value from the data.

But it doesn’t have to be this hard. There are other options in the market that brands can consider, such as a tool like SoundCommerce which provides a library of data connectors, pre-built and customizable date mappings, and outbound data orchestrations all tailor-made and ready-to-go for retail brands.

Below is a sample data flow that illustrates how SoundCommerce connects to all the tools a Retailer is using and ingests the first-party data, agnostic of the platform. SoundCommerce then models and transforms the data within the retail context for brands to take immediate action on the insights they gain from the modeled data.

SoundCommerce built on Google Cloud Platform Services

SoundCommerce selected the Google Cloud Platform and its services to achieve what they set out to do – drive profitability for retailers and brands. SoundCommerce perfected this very need of retailers to centralize and harmonize data, map to business users’ needs to infer key metrics and insights by visualizing the data, or reuse the produced datasets to build upon other use cases specific to retailers. SoundCommerce built a cloud-native solution on Google Cloud leveraging the data cloud platform. Data from various sources are ingested in raw format, parsed, and processed as messages in Cloud Storage buckets using Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) and stored as individual events in Cloud BigTable. A mapping engine maps the data to proprietary data models stored in BigQuery to store the produced data as datasets. Customers use visualization dashboards in Looker to access the data exposed as materialized views from within BigQuery. In many cases, these views are directly accessible by the customer per their use case.

Power Retail Profitable Growth with Analytics Hub

SoundCommerce adopted BigQuery and the recent release of Analytics Hub – a data exchange that enables BigQuery users to efficiently and securely share data. This feature ensures a more scalable direct access experience for SoundCommerce’s current and future customers. It meets brands where they are in their data maturity by giving them the keys to own their data and control their analytics-driven business outcomes. With this feature, retailers can customize their analysis with additional data they own and manage.

“Retail Brands need flexible data models to make key business decisions in real-time to optimize contribution profit and shopper lifetime value,” said SoundCommerce CEO Eric Best. “GCP and BigQuery with Analytics Hub make it easy for SoundCommerce to land and maintain complex data sets, so brands and retailers can drive profitable shopper experiences with every decision.”

SoundCommerce uses Analytics Hub to increase the pace of innovation by sharing datasets with its customers in real time by using the streaming functionality of BigQuery. Customers subscribe to specific datasets through a data exchange as data is generated from external data sources and published into BigQuery. This leads to a natural flow of data that scales easily to hundreds of exchanges and thousands of listings. From the Customer’s viewpoint, Analytics Hub enables them to search listings and coalesce data from other software vendors to produce richer insights. All of the benefits are an add-on to the BigQuery features such as separation of compute and storage, petabyte-scale serverless data warehouse, and tighter integration with several Google Cloud products.

The below diagram shows a view of SoundCommerce sharing datasets with one of its customers:

  1. A SoundCommerce GCP project that hosts the BigQuery instance contains one or more Source Datasets that are composed into a Shared Dataset for a specific customer. The dataset is wrapped around Materialized views but can include other BigQuery objects such as Tables, Views, Authorized views and datasets, BigQuery ML models, external Tables, etc.
  2. The same SoundCommerce GCP project contains the data exchange that acts as a container regarding the shared datasets. The exchange is made private to securely share the curated dataset relevant to the customer. The shared dataset is published into the data exchange as a private listing. The listing inherits the security permissions that are configured on the exchange.
  3. SoundCommerce shares a direct link to the Exchange to the Customer, which they can add as a Linked dataset into their project in their Google Cloud Organization. The shareable link can be pointed to a private listing. From here on, the dataset is visible in the Customer project like any other dataset and immediately available to accept queries and return results. Alternatively, the customer can also view the listing in their own project under Analytics Hub and subscribe to it by adding it as a linked dataset.

SoundCommerce is incrementally onboarding customers to use Analytics Hub for all data sharing use cases. This enables brands to get business insights faster and gain an understanding of their profitable growth quickly. Plus, it gives them the ownership to own their own data and manage it how they see fit for their business. From a technical standpoint, the adoption of Analytics Hub has led to leveraging an inherent capability in BigQuery for data sharing, faster scaling, and reducing operational overhead to onboard customers.

Three New Features in Cloud SQL for SQL Server Extends its Functionality

Google Cloud announces three functionalities for Cloud SQL for SQL Server as a response to the requests from its enterprise customers. Read the blog to get started with Cross-region Replica, Active Directory Integration and SQL Server 2019.

As a product with a long history in the database ecosystem, SQL Server offers numerous native capabilities that help provide scalability and security to its users.  However, it can be time consuming and complex to take advantage of these features. Google Cloud SQL for SQL Server saves your team time by eliminating much of the unnecessary toil (OS patching, version upgrades, replica setup etc.) while still allowing you to leverage the functionality you’re used to. Three new features for Cloud SQL for SQL Server take its functionality even further. 

A few months ago, we announced Active Directory (AD) integration had entered preview; now, it is generally available. Equally exciting, we are releasing Cross-Region Replicas (based on SQL Server’s Always On Availability Groups) in preview.  Finally, you can try out this great new functionality in our managed database service with the latest release of SQL Server 2019, which is now generally available.  

Simple and Secure Windows Authentication with Active Directory

As one of the most requested and critical security capabilities for Cloud SQL for SQL Server, we are pleased to now provide Windows Authentication via Managed Service for Microsoft Active Directory as generally available. Customers should feel confident onboarding their business critical production workloads to the managed service while still maintaining the authentication best practices they rely on today.  While identities can be created and managed directly within the managed AD service, many customers choose to establish a trust relationship with their existing on-prem AD footprint to leverage existing identity objects.

What is Cross-Region Replica for SQL Server?

Bringing parity in the Cloud SQL portfolio alongside MySQL and PostgreSQL, Cross-region replica makes it easy to create a fully managed read replica in a different region than that of the primary instance. You can create a replica in any Google Cloud region.  The difference for SQL Server is the Availability Group based architecture that paves the way for the service to continue to offer more core compatibility with the SQL Server features our customers depend on. Cloud SQL greatly simplifies the traditional process of provisioning Availability Groups and streamlines it into a few-step workflow.

Using read replicas will allow you to horizontally scale your read workloads. For example, you can configure a reporting dashboard to work against a read replica, and because it’s only reading, it will not affect the primary instance. You can also promote replicas to be Cloud SQL instances and that could help you reduce your recovery point objective (RPO) and recovery time objective (RTO). It can help you with the RPO because the data is constantly replicated and the replica is probably more up to date than your latest backup. It can help you with RTO because promoting the replica, especially in an automated way, is a relatively short process. To get started, check out the documentation for Cross-Region Replica

What’s new in SQL Server 2019?

Providing the most current major and minor versions is a key aspect of maintaining compatibility and security for your database workload. Cloud SQL provides an easy provisioning experience that will now allow you to select from four editions of SQL Server 2019 similar to our current SQL Server 2017 options of Enterprise, Standard, Web, and Express. A few key considerations as you are evaluating the new version should be:

  • Compatibility level – A newly created database on a Cloud SQL for SQL Server 2019 Databases instance has a compatibility level of 150 by default.  
  • Accelerated Database Recovery – Allows instances to reduce the availability impact of restarts and shutdowns.
  • TempDB changes – While we recently provided you more control to manage your tempdb files, 2019 also brings optimization to improve performance as well.
  • Intelligent query processing – SQL Server 2019 provides direct improvements to the query engine itself which may improve overall query processing and performance.
  • Many other performance improvements – capabilities such as verbose truncation warnings, resumable index build, and others.  Learn more about supported features here.

In conclusion

These three features have been the most common requests from our enterprise customers. Finally, you can bring your own Active Directory domain for SQL Server authentication and authorization, use the latest features from SQL Server 2019 and scale your read workloads as well as leveraging the cross regional replicas for faster disaster-recovery.

Oden Technologies moves to the Google Cloud Platform to cut the cost and complexity of its smart factory cloud platform for manufacturing analytics.

Oden Technologies is using the Internet of Things (IoT) to improve the factories of today. The giant network of “things” (including people) connected to each other via the Internet has the potential to reduce waste, increase efficiency, and improve safety across all walks of life. Oden is leading IoT innovation in manufacturing by combining wireless connectivity, big data, and cloud computing.

The use of data to improve manufacturing is practically as old as manufacturing itself. But the computerization of manufacturing has resulted in broad and rapid changes to the way data is collected and processed, as well as the sheer volume of data available.

Oden’s goal is to help manufacturers tap into this data to quickly identify process trends and even warning signs of machine breakdown. Such visibility can reveal opportunities to improve manufacturing and maintenance processes that reduce waste and increase profit margins.

Oden designs and develops data collection devices that can plug into almost any kind of machine and can wirelessly transmit data with minimal complexity and setup time.

Once devices are installed, the Oden technology platform processes data to give manufacturers cutting-edge analytics that are easy to comprehend. Analysis produced by the platform provides factory engineers with data points such as detailed root-cause analysis down to the second, factory-wide performance in real-time, and trend analysis.

Improving cloud delivery

Oden’s previous cloud platform performed satisfactorily, but the company evaluated alternatives in search of potential reductions in cost and complexity and increases in performance.

When evaluating Google Cloud Platform, Oden discovered it would require fewer virtual machine (VM) instances for equivalent performance, which would cut costs. Furthermore, Oden could gain more sophisticated data analytics and machine learning capabilities compared with its existing cloud provider.

Today, Oden runs its entire platform on Google Cloud Platform including Google Compute EngineGoogle Cloud Pub/SubGoogle Cloud BigtableGoogle Stackdriver, and Google Kubernetes Engine.

“In order to serve our customers, we need a cloud platform that can scale reliably while keeping costs low, perform under heavy loads, and consistently deliver sophisticated features such as machine learning,” says Willem Sundblad, CEO and Founder at Oden Technologies. “Google Cloud Platform is way ahead in all of these areas compared to our previous cloud provider.”

Capturing tens of millions of metrics a day

Using Google Cloud Platform, Oden can help an average factory capture and store approximately 10 million metrics on a single manufacturing line every day.

Metrics can include extremely granular detail, such as the amount of electricity going to machines, the amount of raw material consumed, and the volume of material produced. Sensors can also capture and transmit environmental information such as temperature, humidity, and dew point so that manufacturers can identify weather-related and seasonal impacts on production.

The updated Oden Cloud Platform uses Kubernetes Engine—powered by the open source Kubernetes system—to run application program interfaces (APIs) that capture data from Oden’s wireless devices on the factory floor.

Google Cloud Pub/Sub then sends the data in real time to Google Cloud Bigtable, where data is processed using Oden’s proprietary analytics tools. Google Stackdriver supports Google Cloud Platform monitoring, logging, and diagnostics, which help Oden deliver its cloud platform with confidence.

Oden Technologies builds dashboards powered by Kubernetes Engine, which pull analyzed data from Google Cloud Bigtable. The dashboards provide customers with real-time visibility into their manufacturing lines. Oden Factory Cloud dashboards allow customers to delve deeper into their data to fine-tune production processes or discover the root causes of production issues.

With the previous cloud provider, Oden required 80 VM instances to run the dashboards. With Google Cloud Platform that number has been cut to 45, which dramatically reduces costs and complexity.

“We migrated from our previous cloud provider to Google Cloud Platform in just one month,” says Willem. “Further, our storage and data analytics costs have decreased by 30%. Cost savings like these allow us to protect customers from rising expenses, keeping us focused on bringing the best products possible to market.”

Faster data access; more efficient factories

With Google Cloud Platform, Oden can now deliver a complete factory analytics picture to manufacturers. In environments where thousands of variables affect the bottom line, businesses can now automatically and perpetually record machine and performance measurement. Oden Factory Cloud gives customers access to comprehensive data insights and can eliminate reliance on onsite infrastructure investments to run their own analytics.

Because manufacturers have access to live data and can analyze production data quickly, they can troubleshoot and resolve problems in minutes rather than months. Such information helps improve product quality, minimize unplanned downtime, cut costs, and improve profitability.

Research shows that over 90% of large organizations already deploy multicloud architectures, and their data is distributed across several public cloud providers. Additionally, data is also increasingly split across various storage systems such as warehouses, operational and relational databases, object stores, etc. With the proliferation of new applications, data is serving many more use cases such as data sciences, business intelligence, analytics, streaming and the list goes on. With these data trends, customers are increasingly gravitating towards an open multicloud data lake. However, multicloud data lakes present several challenges such as data silos, data duplication, fragmented governance, complexity of tools, and increased costs.

With Google’s data cloud technologies, customers can leverage the unique combination of distributed cloud services. They can create an agile cross-cloud semantic business layer with Looker and manage data lakes and data warehouses across cloud environments at scale with BigQuery and capabilities like BigLake and BigQuery Omni.

BigLake is a storage engine that unifies data warehouses and lake houses by standardizing across different storage formats including BigQuery managed table and open file formats such as Parquet and Apache Iceberg on object storage. BigQuery Omni provides the compute engine that runs locally to the storage on AWS or Azure, which customers can use to query data in AWS or Azure seamlessly. This provides several key benefits such as:

  1. A single pane of glass to query your multicloud data lakes (across Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft Azure)
  2. Cross-cloud analytics by combining data across different platforms with little to no egress costs

In this blog, we will share cross-cloud analytics use cases customers are solving with Google’s Data Cloud and the benefits they are realizing.

Unified marketing analytics for 360-degree insights

Organizations want to perform marketing analytics – ads optimization, inventory management, churn prediction, buyer propensity trends and many more such analytics. To do this before BigQuery Omni, customers had to use data from several different sources such as Google Analytics, public datasets and other proprietary information stored across cloud environments. This requires moving large amounts of data, managing duplicate copies and incremental costs to perform any cross-cloud analytics and derive actionable insights. With BigQuery Omni, organizations are able to greatly simplify this workflow. Using the familiar BigQuery interface, users can access data residing in AWS or Azure, discover and select just the relevant data that needs to be combined for further analysis. This subset of data can be moved to Google Cloud using Omni’s new Cross-Cloud Transfer capabilities. Customers can combine this data with other Google Cloud datasets and these consolidated tables can be made available to key business stakeholders through advanced analytics tools such as Looker and Looker Studio. Customers are also able to tie in this data now with world class AI models via Vertex AI.

As an illustrative example, consider a retailer who has sales & inventory, user and search data spread across multiple data silos. Using BigQuery Omni they can seamlessly bring these datasets together and power several marketing analytics scenarios like customer segmentation, campaign management and demand forecasting etc.

Data platform with consistent and unified cross-cloud governance

Another pattern is customers looking to analyze operational, transactional and business data across data silos in different clouds through a unified data platform. These data silos are a result of various factors such as merger and acquisitions, standardization of analytical tools, leveraging best of breed solutions in different clouds and diversification of data footprint across clouds. In addition to a single pane of glass for data access across silos, customers deeply desire consistent and uniform governance of their data across clouds.

With BigLake and BigQuery Omni abstracting the storage and compute layers respectively, organizations can access and query their data in Google Cloud irrespective of where it resides. They can also set fine-grained row level and column access policies in BigQuery and consistently govern it across clouds. These building blocks enable data engineering teams to build a unified and governed data platform for their data users without having to deal with the complexity of building and managing complex data pipelines. Furthermore, with BigQuery Omni’s integration with Dataplex and Data Catalog, you can discover, search your data across clouds and enrich your data by adding relevant business context with business glossary and rich text.

Simplified data sharing between data providers and their customers

A third emerging pattern in cross cloud analytics is data sharing. Several services have the business need to share information such as inventory data, subscriber data to their customers or users who in turn analyze or aggregate the data with their proprietary data and oftentimes share the results back with the service provider. In several cases, the two parties are on different cloud environments, requiring them to move data back and forth.

Consider a company operating in the customer data platform (CDP) space. CDPs were designed to help activate customer data, and a critical first step of that was unifying and managing that customer data. To enable this, many CDP vendors built their solution choosing one of the available cloud infrastructure technologies and copied data from the client’s systems.“Copying data from client applications and infrastructure has always been a requirement to deploy a CDP, but it doesn’t have to be anymore” — Justin DeBrabant, Senior Vice President of Product, ActionIQ.

While a small percentage of customers are fine with moving data across cloud environments, the majority are hesitant to onboard new services and would rather prefer providing governed access to their data sets.

“A new architectural pattern is emerging, allowing organizations to keep their data at one location and make it accessible, with the proper guardrails, to applications used by the rest of the organization’s stack” adds Justin at ActionIQ.

With BigQuery Omni, services in Google Cloud Platform can more easily access and share data with their customers and users in other cloud environments with limited data movement. One of UK’s largest statistics providers has explored Omni for their data sharing needs.

Over the last year, we’ve seen great momentum in customer adoption and added significant innovations to BigQuery Omni including improved performance and scalability for querying your data in AWS S3 or Azure Blob Storage, Iceberg support for Omni, Larger query result set size up to 20GB and Cross-cloud transfer that helps customers easily, securely, and cost effectively move just enough data across cloud environments for advanced analytics.

BigQuery Omni has launched several features to support unified governance of your data across multiple clouds – you can get fine-grained access to your multi-cloud data with row level and column level security. Building on this, we are excited to announce that BigQuery Omni now supports data masking. We’ve also made it easy for customers to try and see the benefits of BigQuery Omni through the limited time free trial available until March 30, 2023.

BigQuery Omni running on other public clouds outside of Google Cloud is available in AWS US East1 (N.Virginia) and Azure US East2 (US East) regions. We are also excited to share that we will be bringing BigQuery Omni to more regions in the future, starting with Asia Pacific (AWS Korea) coming soon.

For years, retailers have been told that they must embrace a litany of new technologies, trends, and imperatives like online shopping, mobile apps, omnichannel, and digital transformation. In search of growth and stability, retailers adopted many of these, only to realize that for every box they ticked, there was another one waiting.

And then the pandemic hit, along with rising social movements and increasingly harsh weather. Some retailers were more prepared to take on these disruptions than others, which crystallized a new universal truth across the industry: the ability to adapt on the fly became the most important trait to survive and thrive.

Today’s retail landscape has surfaced both existing and new challenges for specialty and department store retailers. Approximately 88% of purchases previously occurred within a store environment. Now, it’s closer to 59%, with the remainder done online or through other omni methods. 

With such constant change and upheaval, it can feel like the mantra now is ABP: always be pivoting. 

The big question isn’t just how to maintain constant momentum and agility—it’s how to do it without sapping your workforce, your inventory, or your profits in the process. The pivot is now a given. What matters is how you do it.

Adapting requires a flexible base of technology that allows retailers to shift and scale seamlessly with the needs of the moment. 

They need to be able to leverage real-time insights and enhance customer experiences rapidly, online and in the real world (not to mention the growing hybridization that’s AR and VR). They need to modernize their stores to power engaging consumer and associate experiences. They need to enhance operations for rapid scaling between full operations and digital-only offerings.

To help retailers achieve these goals and more, Google Cloud is honing a trio of essential innovations: demand forecasting that harnesses the power of data analytics and artificial intelligence; enhanced product discovery to improve conversion across channels; and the tools to help create the modern store experience.

In other words, here’s some of the biggest ways we’re ready to help you pivot.

Pivot point 1: Harnessing data and AI for demand forecasting with Vertex AI

One of the greatest challenges for retailers when building organizational flexibility is managing inventory and the supply chain. 

We are in the midst of one of the worst global supply chain crises, stemming from soaring demand and logistics issues brought on by the pandemic. This crisis has only heightened the challenge retailers face when assessing demand and product availability. Even in normal times, mismanagement of inventory can add up to a trillion-dollar problem, according to IHL Group (costing $634 billion in lost sales worldwide each year, while overstocks result in $472 billion in lost revenues due to markdowns). 

On the flipside, optimizing your supply chain can lead to greater profits. For instance, McKinsey predicts that a 10% to 20% improvement in retail supply chain forecasting accuracy is likely to produce a 5% reduction in inventory costs and a 2% to 3% increase in revenues.

Some of the challenges related to demand forecasting include:

  • Low accuracy leads to excess inventory, missed sales, and pressure on fragile supply chains.
  • Real drivers of product demand are not included, because large datasets are hard to model using traditional methods.
  • Poor accuracy for new product launches and products that have sparse or intermittent demand.
  • Complex models are hard to understand, leading to poor product allocation and low return on investment on promotions.
  • Different departments use different methods, leading to miscommunication and costly reconciliation errors.

AI-based demand forecasting techniques can help. Vertex AI Forecast supports retailers in maintaining greater inventory flexibility by infusing machine learning into their existing systems. Machine learning and AI-based forecasting models like Vertex AI are able to digest large sets of disparate data, drive analytics and automatically adjust when provided with new information. 

With these machine learning models, retailers can not only incorporate historical sales data, but also use close to real-time data such as marketing campaigns, web actions like a customer clicking the “add to cart” button on a website, local weather forecasts, and much more. 

Pivot point 2: Enhanced product discovery through AI-powered search and recommendations

If customers can’t easily find what they are looking for, whether online or at the store, they will turn to someone else. That’s a simple statement, but one with profound impacts.

In research conducted by The Harris Poll and Google Cloud, we found that over a six month period, 95% of consumers received search results that were not relevant to what they were searching for on a retail website. And roughly 85% of consumers view a brand differently after an unsuccessful search, while 74% say they avoid websites where they’ve experienced search difficulties in the past.

Each year, retailers lose more than $300 billion dollars from search abandonment, or when a consumer searches for a product on a retailer’s website but does not find what they are looking for. Our product discovery solutions help you surface the right products, to the right customers, at the right time. These solutions include: 

  • Vision Product Search, which is like bringing the augmented reality of Google Lens to a retailer’s own branded mobile app experience. Both shoppers and retail store associates can search for products using an image they’ve photographed or found online and receive a ranked list of similar items.
  • Recommendations AI, which enables retailers to deliver highly personalized recommendations at scale across channels.
  • Retail Search, which provides Google-quality search results on a retailer’s own website and mobile applications.

All three are powered by Google Cloud, leveraging Google’s advanced understanding of user context and intent, utilizing technology to deliver a seamless experience to every shopper. With these combined capabilities, retailers are able to reduce search abandonment and improve conversions across their digital properties. 

Pivot point 3: Building the modern store

Stores are no longer places for just browsing and buying. They must be flexible operation centers, ready to pivot to address changing circumstances. The modern store must be multiple things at once: a mini-fulfillment and return center, a recommendation engine, a shopping destination, a fun place to work, and more. 

Just as retail companies had to embrace omnichannel, stores are now becoming omnichannel centers on their own, mixing the digital and physical into a single location. Retailers can use physical stores as a vehicle to deliver superior customer experiences. This will demand heightened levels of collaboration and cooperation between stores, digital, and tech infrastructure teams, building on the agile ways they have worked together.

In many ways, it’s about allowing our physical spaces to function more like digital ones. Google Cloud can help by bringing the scalability, security, and reliability of the cloud to the store, allowing physical locations to upgrade infrastructure and modernize their internal and customer-facing applications. 

Think of it as when a new OS gets released for your phone. It’s the same small, hard box, but the experience can feel radically different. Now, extend that same idea to a digitally enabled store. With the right displays, interfaces, and tools at a given retail location, the team only needs to send an over-the-air update to create radically fresh experiences, ranging from sales displays to fulfillment or employee engagement.

Such an approach can enable streamlined experiences for both customers and store associates. For instance, when it comes to the modern store’s evolving role as a fulfillment or return center, cloud solutions can help drive efficiency in stores through automation of ordering, replenishment, and fulfillment of omnichannel order selection.  

Similar tools for personalized product discovery online can be applied to customers in the store, helping them to browse and explore, or even create a tailored shopping experience. 

The impact of store associates can be maximized by equipping them with technology to provide expertise that drives value-added customer service, as well as increasing productivity in stores by streamlining operations, thus lowering overhead cost. At the register, customers should be able to enjoy frictionless checkout while ensuring reliable, accurate, secure transactions.
