Four Key Takeaways from Google and Quantum Metric’s Back-to-School Retail Benchmark Study

Google research and Quantum Metric's Back-to-School study on the U.S. retail data helps identify pain points and improve search and personalization for shoppers as they prep up for post-holiday season. Read this blogpost for more insights!

Is it September yet? Hardly! School is barely out for the summer. But according to Google and Quantum Metric research, the back-to-school and off-to-college shopping season – which in the U.S. is second only to the holidays in terms of purchasing volume1 – has already begun. For retailers, that means planning for this peak season has kicked off as well.

We’d like to share four key trends that emerged from Google research and Quantum Metric’s Back-to-School Retail Benchmarks study of U.S. retail data, explore the reasons behind them, and outline the key takeaways.

  1. Out-of-stock and inflation concerns are changing the way consumers shop. Back-to-school shoppers are starting earlier every year, with 41% beginning even before school is out – even more so when buying for college1. Why? The behavior is driven in large part by consumers’ concerns that they won’t be able to get what they need if they wait too long. 29% of shoppers start looking a full month before they need something1.

Back-to-school purchasing volume is quite high, with the majority spending up to $500 and 21% spending more than $1,0001. In fact, looking at year-over-year data, we see that average cart values have not only doubled since November 2021, but increased since the holidays1. And keep in mind that back-to-school spending is a key indicator leading into the holiday season.

That said, as people are reacting to inflation, they are comparing prices, hunting for bargains, and generally taking more time to plan. This is borne out by the fact that 76% of online shoppers are adding items to their carts and waiting to see if they go on sale before making the purchase1. And, to help stay on budget and reduce shipping costs, 74% plan to make multiple purchases in one checkout1. That carries over to in-store shopping, when consumers are buying more in one visit to reduce trips and save on gas.

2. The omnichannel theme continues. Consumers continue to use multiple channels in their shopping experience. As the pandemic has abated, some 82% expect that their back-to-school buying will be in-store, and 60% plan to purchase online. But in any case, 45% of consumers report that they will use both channels; more than 50% research online first before ever setting foot in a store2. Some use as many as five channels, including video and social media, and these 54% of consumers spend 1.5 times more compared to those who use only two channels4.

And mobile is a big part of the journey. Shoppers are using their phones to make purchases, especially for deadline-driven, last-minute needs, and often check prices on other retailers’ websites while shopping in-store. Anecdotally, mobile is a big part of how we ourselves shop with our children, who like to swipe on the phone through different options for colors and styles. We use our desktops when shopping on our own, especially for items that require research and represent a larger investment – and our study shows that’s quite common.

3. Consumers are making frequent use of wish lists. One trend we have observed is a higher abandonment rate, especially for apparel and general home and school supplies, compared to bigger-ticket items that require more research. But that can be attributed in part to the increasing use of wish lists. Online shoppers are picking a few things that look appealing or items on sale, saving them in wish lists, and then choosing just a few to purchase. Our research shows that 39% of consumers build one or two wish lists per month, while 28% said they build one or two each week, often using their lists to help with budgeting1.

4. Frustration rates have dropped significantly. Abandonment rates aside, shopper annoyance rates are down by 41%, year over year1. This is despite out-of-stock concerns and higher prices. But one key finding showed that both cart abandonment and “rage clicks” are more frequent on desktops, possibly because people investing time on search also have more time to complain to customer service.

And frustration does still exist. Some $300 billion is lost each year in the U.S. from bad search experiences5. Data collected internationally shows that 80% of consumers view a brand differently after experiencing search difficulties, and 97% favor websites where they can quickly find what they are looking for5.

Lessons to Learn


What are the key takeaways for retailers? In general, consider the sources of customer pain points and find ways to erase friction. Improve search and personalization. And focus on improving the customer experience and building loyalty. Specifically:

80% of shoppers want personalization6. Think about how you can drive personalized promotions or experiences that will drive higher engagement with your brand.

46% of consumers want more time to research1. Drive toward providing more robust research and product information points, like comparison charts, images, and specific product details.

43% of consumers want a discount1, but given current economic trends, retailers may not be offering discounts. In order to appease budget-conscious shoppers, retailers can consider other retention strategies such as driving loyalty using points, rewards, or faster-shipping perks.

Be sure to keep returns as simple as possible so consumers feel confident when making a purchase, and reduce possible friction points if a consumer decides to make a return. 43% of shoppers return at least a quarter of the products they buy and do not want to pay for shipping or jump through hoops1.

At Redisconf 2018 in San Francisco last month, we announced the public beta of Cloud Memorystore for Redis, a fully-managed in-memory data store service. Today, the public beta is available for everyone to try. Cloud Memorystore provides a scalable, more secure and highly available Redis service fully managed by Google. It’s fully compatible with open source Redis, letting you migrate your applications to Google Cloud Platform (GCP) with zero code changes.

As more and more applications need to process data in real-time, you may want a caching layer in your infrastructure to reduce latency for your applications. Redis delivers fast in-memory caching, support for powerful data structures and features like persistence, replication and pub-sub. For example, data structures like sorted sets make it easy to maintain counters and are widely used to implement gaming leaderboards. Whether it’s simple session caching, developing games played by millions of users or building fast analytical pipelines, developers want to leverage the power of Redis without having to worry about VMs, patches, upgrades, firewall rules, etc.

Early adopters of Cloud Memorystore have been using the service for the last few months and they are thrilled with the service.

Simple and flexible provisioning
How you choose to deploy Cloud Memorystore for Redis depends on the availability and performance needs of your application. You can deploy Redis as a standalone instance or with a replica to provide high availability. But while replicating a Redis instance provides only data redundancy, you still need to do the heavy lifting of health checking, electing of a primary, client connections on failover, etc. The Cloud Memorystore service takes away all this complexity and makes it easy for you deploy a Redis instance that meets your application’s needs.

Cloud Memorystore provides two tiers of service, Basic and Standard, each with different availability characteristics. Regardless of the tier of service, you can provision a Redis instance as small as 1 GB up to 300 GB. With network throughput up to 12 Gbps, Cloud Memorystore supports applications with very high bandwidth needs.

Provisioning a Cloud Memorystore instance is simple: just choose a tier, the size you need to support the instance availability and performance needs, and the region. Your Redis instance will be up and running within a few minutes.

“Lift and shift” applications
Once provisioned, using Cloud Memorystore is a breeze. You can connect to the Redis instance using any of the tools and libraries you commonly use in your environment. Cloud Memorystore clients makes use of IP addresses to connect to the instance. Applications always connect to one IP address and Cloud Memorystore ensures the traffic is directed to the primary in case there is a failover.

Whether it’s provisioning, monitoring or scaling memory, Cloud Memorystore simplifies common management tasks.

Security
Open-source Redis has very minimal security, and as a developer or administrator, it can be challenging to ensure all Redis instances in your organization are protected. With Cloud Memorystore, Redis instances are deployed using a private IP address, which prevents the instance from being accessed from the internet. You can also use Cloud Identity & Access Management (IAM) roles to ensure granular access for managing the instance. Additionally, authorized networks ensure that the Redis instance is accessible only when connected to the authorized VPC network.

Stackdriver integration
Cloud Memorystore instances publish all the key metrics into Stackdriver, Google Cloud’s monitoring and management suite. You can monitor all of your instances from the Stackdriver dashboard, and use Stackdriver Logging to get more insights about the Redis instances

Seamless memory scaling
When a mobile application goes viral, it may be necessary to provision a larger Redis instance to meet latency and throughput needs. With Cloud Memorystore you can scale up the instance with a few clicks, and the Standard High Availability tier lets you scale the instance with minimal disruption to the application.

On-demand pricing

With the release of our BigQuery Connector for SAP, we’re taking a another big step towards solving a major challenge for SAP customers with a quick, easy, and inexpensive way to integrate SAP data with BigQuery, our serverless, highly scalable, and cost-effective multi cloud data warehouse designed for business agility.

Solving for simplified data integration

Like most businesses today, SAP customers are eager to unlock the immediate insights and opportunities within their ever-growing stores of business data. However, many are discovering just how hard it can be to take the first step in any modern, cloud-enabled data analytics strategy: combining SAP data with other cloud-native, and enterprise data sets in real-time and at scale. According to a 2020 SAPInsider study, more than half of SAP customers surveyed said data integration was their top analytics pain point. These companies urgently need a rapid, sustainable, cost-effective and scalable way to integrate SAP data with modern cloud data analytics solutions.

The BigQuery Connector for SAP gives our customers a solution: a fast, simple, cost-effective and massively scalable way to make SAP data fully accessible within BigQuery by leveraging customers’ existing SAP Landscape Transformation Replication Server (SLT) tooling and skill sets. It’s the first SAP SLT direct near real-time connector for BigQuery without the need to set up additional infrastructure or third-party middleware, and can be deployed using a variety of embedded or stand-alone deployment options. In fact, most customers can install the BigQuery Connector for SAP in less than an hour—a remarkably easy way to start working with our industry-leading analytics solution that delivers proven and quantifiable business advantages for customers. Additionally, the BigQuery Connector for SAP is not restricted to customers who have deployed their SAP applications on Google Cloud. Customer’s who are running their SAP applications on-premise, or on any cloud, can also deploy and realize the analytical benefits of the solution.

Designing a solution with customer requirements and investments in mind

When the Google Cloud team started work on an analytics data integration tool for our SAP customers, we began with a set of requirements designed to root out the usual sources of cost and complexity. These included: 

  • The need for real-time performance with deltas replicated in milliseconds
  • The ability to integrate data from almost any SAP Netweaver based application running today, regardless of its deployment location (on premises, any cloud, Google Cloud)
  • Automatic BigQuery data type mapping with minimal transformation required
  • Generation of target tables in BigQuery directly from source, if required 
  • Application layer integration that avoids the issues of direct database access
  • Leveraging customers’ existing SAP skillsets, change data capture, and infrastructure

An important step towards meeting these requirements came when Alphabet, Google’s parent company, decided to leverage SAP SLT as a foundation for developing direct data replication between SAP and BigQuery for its internal corporate landscape. SLT as part of SAP’s strategic Business Technology Platform, supports real-time replication of data from SAP or third-party systems to SAP HANA, however, one of its limitations was direct integration with targets like BigQuery. 

SAP SLT was a logical foundation for developing the connector for several reasons: 

  • It’s widely adopted among SAP customers who likely already leverage SLT for SAP analytics data integration
  • It works with almost every non-SaaS SAP application environment running today
  • It supports real-time replication performance at massive scale

It was an obvious choice for the Alphabet engineering team who saw immediate value from integrating SAP with BigQuery.

SAP data integration with BigQuery enables new value

Analytics Hub for Secure Data Sharing and Analytics Unlocks True Data Value and Insights

Google Cloud announces a new fully managed service, Analytics Hub to help businesses unlock real value of data sharing for insights and driving business value. The Analytics Hub is built to offer businesses a rich data ecosystem with analytics-ready datasets, better control and monitoring on the data usage, self-service way to access valuable and trusted data assets, and data assets monetization without the overhead of building and managing the infrastructure. The new service offering will be available for preview in Q3. Learn more.

Customers tell us that sharing and exchanging data with other organizations is a critical element of their analytics strategy, but it’s hamstrung by unreliable data and processes, and only getting harder with security threats and privacy regulations on the rise. 

Furthermore, traditional data sharing techniques use batch data pipelines that are expensive to run, create late arriving data, and can break with any changes to the source data. They also create multiple copies of data, which brings unnecessary costs and can bypass data governance processes. These techniques do not offer features for data monetization, such as managing subscriptions and entitlements. Altogether, these challenges mean that organizations are unable to realize the full potential of transforming their business with shared data.

To address these limitations, we are introducing Analytics Hub, a new fully managed service, available in Q3, in preview, that helps you unlock the value of data sharing, leading to new insights and increased business value. With Analytics Hub you get:

  • A rich data ecosystem by publishing and subscribing to analytics-ready datasets. 
  • Control and monitoring over how your data is being used, because data is shared in one place.
  • A self-service way to access valuable and trusted data assets, including data provided by Google. For example, a unique dataset from Google Search Trends will be available, that you can query and combine with your own data.
  • An easy way to monetize your data assets without the overhead of building and managing the infrastructure. 

Built on a decade of cross-organizational sharing

While Analytics Hub is a new service, it builds on BigQuery, Google’s petabyte-scale, serverless cloud data warehouse. BigQuery’s unique architecture provides separation between compute and storage, enabling data publishers to share data with as many subscribers as you want without having to make multiple copies of your data. With BigQuery, there are no servers to deploy or manage, which means that data consumers get immediate value from shared data. Data can be provided and consumed in real-time using the streaming capabilities of BigQuery and you can leverage the built in machine learning, geospatial, and natural language capabilities of BigQuery or take advantage of the native business intelligence support with tools like LookerGoogle Sheets, and Data Studio.

BigQuery has had cross-organizational, in-place data sharing capabilities since it was introduced in 2010. We took a look at usage metrics in BigQuery and found that over a 7 day period in April, we had over 3,000 different organizations sharing over 200 petabytes of data. These numbers don’t include data sharing between departments within the same organization.

As you can see, data sharing in BigQuery is already popular. But we want to make it easier and even more scalable.

Raising the bar on data sharing 

To make data sharing easier and more scalable in BigQuery, Analytics Hub introduces the  concepts of shared datasets and exchanges. As a data publisher, you create shared datasets that contain the views of data that you want to deliver to your subscribers. Next, you create exchanges, which are used to organize and secure shared datasets. By default, exchanges are completely private, which means that only the users and groups that you give access to can view or subscribe to the data. You can also create internal exchanges or leverage public exchanges provided by Google. Finally, you publish shared datasets into an exchange to make them available to subscribers. 

Data subscribers search through the datasets that are available across all exchanges for which they have access and subscribe to relevant datasets. This creates a linked dataset in their project that they can query and join with their own data. Subscribers pay for the queries that they run against the data while the publisher pays for the storage of the data. Data providers can add new data, new tables, or new columns to the shared dataset and these will be immediately available to subscribers. In addition, the publisher can track subscribers, disable subscriptions, and see aggregated usage information for the shared data. 

Analytics Hub makes it easy for you to publish, discover, and subscribe to valuable datasets that you can combine with your own data to derive unique insights. Here are some types of data that will be available through Analytics Hub:

  • Public datasets: Easy access to the existing repository of over 200 public datasets, including data about weather and climate, cryptocurrency, healthcare and life sciences, and transportation. 
  • Google datasets: Unique, freely-available datasets from Google. One example of this is the COVID-19 community mobility dataset. Another example is the forthcoming Google Trends dataset, which will provide the top 25 search terms and top 25 rising search terms over a 5 year window in 210 distinct locations in the US. Trends data can be used by everyone in the organization to gain insights into what customers care about.
  • Commercial (paid for) datasets: We are working with leading commercial data providers to bring their data products to Analytics Hub. If you are interested in delivering your data via Analytics Hub, we’re also introducing Data Gravity, an initiative that provides storage benefits and new distribution paths for data published through Analytics Hub. 
  • Internal datasets: We know that data sharing can be challenging in larger organizations. Analytics Hub can be used for internal data, for example, to share standardized customer demographics with your sales engineering and data science teams.

Next steps for Analytics Hub

This is just the beginning for Analytics Hub. As we get to preview and general availability, we will be adding additional capabilities, including workflows for publishing and subscribing, publishing analytics assets (Looker Blocks, Data Studio reports, Connected Google Sheets) along with the shared data, the ability for data publishers to specify query restrictions on the usage of their data, and making it easy for data publishers to create sandbox environments for subscribers to work with their data, even if they are not yet on Google Cloud. We will provide features in Analytics Hub for monetization of data, including managing subscriptions, data entitlements, and billing.

Blue Apron also offers a monthly wine subscription service and a la carte culinary tools and products through its marketplace.

If that sounds simple, it isn’t. Ingredients for the meal kits must be sourced at the right time, quality, and price. Orders must be packed efficiently and in exactly the right proportions. Most importantly, meal kits must be delivered to the customer fresh and on time.

To meet these criteria and make data meaningful and intuitive to its managers, one of the tools Blue Apron relies on is Looker, an analytics platform that lets business users explore data and ask sophisticated questions using familiar terms.

A Google Cloud partner and winner of the 2016 Google Cloud Global Partner Award for Solution Innovation, Looker integrates its solution with Google Cloud Platform to help customers modernize their analytics.

Blue Apron previously used Looker with a single database instance hosted on another cloud provider. As data volumes grew and queries became more complex, it became difficult to scale. Blue Apron’s only options were choosing ever-larger server classes and increasing storage throughput by purchasing a higher number of provisioned IOPS. To improve speed, scalability, and cost efficiency, Blue Apron moved its data warehouse to Google BigQuery.

The analytics platform of the future

When you’re making business decisions about a customer’s dinner, speed matters. Looker takes full advantage of the power of Google BigQuery, making it easy to build a data exploration platform. Blue Apron’s applications publish event data to Kafka—approximately 140 million events per day—and data is then streamed into Google BigQuery, which performs lightning-fast queries on both streamed and static data. Now, business users and analytics teams can make decisions based on near real-time information in Looker, instead of waiting until the next business day for results.

Previously, Blue Apron spent up to a week out of every month optimizing its data warehouse to attempt to improve query performance. With Google BigQuery, all maintenance is handled by Google, reclaiming 25% of up to two engineers’ time. Even when multiple people are using Looker concurrently, query performance never degrades and storage never runs out.

“Because Google BigQuery is architected as a giant, shared cluster, growth is smooth,” says Lloyd Tabb, Founder and CTO of Looker. “Like a race car going from 0 to 120 mph, there are no shift points, just smooth acceleration. To us, it looks like the future.”

An empowering, integrated toolset

Looker takes advantage of aggressive caching and support for date-based table partitioning in Google BigQuery to increase performance, simplify the load process, and improve data manageability. By partitioning data by time, Blue Apron can also take advantage of better long-term storage pricing without sacrificing query performance. When using Google BigQuery with Looker, analysts can easily see how much data is going to be scanned before each query is run.

Blue Apron is also using Looker for Google BigQuery Data Transfer Service to provide actionable analytics for all of the company’s Google marketing data from Google AdWords and DoubleClick by Google in one place to understand campaign performance across channels, saving its data operations team months of work. Using Looker Blocks, marketers can quickly make sense of the data with reports and dashboards, and set alerts when campaign performance hits certain thresholds.

Looker Blocks for Google AdWords and DoubleClick by Google provide all the analysis you’d get straight from the Google console, plus additional value-add analysis that’s impossible to replicate without SQL. Complex metrics such as ROI on ad spend, flexible multi-touch attribution, and predictive lifetime value empower marketers with a better understanding of their customers and where to spend their next dollar.

In addition to these turnkey dashboards and pieces of analysis, marketers can customize views to meet their unique needs and workflows. These capabilities help the Blue Apron marketing team make decisions regarding the allocation of spend to maximize customer acquisition and retention.

For data cleansing and transformation, Blue Apron uses Google Cloud Dataproc to run fully managed Apache Spark clusters on Google Cloud Platform. It’s also leveraging Google BigQuery integration with Google Workspace to bring data into Google Sheets for further distribution and analysis.

“Transferring data between Google tools is fast because it all happens on the Google network,” says Sam. “We can pull data from Google BigQuery, run transformations with Spark, and then write it back to Google BigQuery. That’s very helpful in providing our business users and data analysts with the richest, most current data.”

Committed to decarbonizing the transport industry and decongesting cities, Acciona Mobility chose Google Cloud to build a scalable and reliable IT infrastructure to support its long-term vision. The result? Great uptime leading to very positive ratings.

When you think about climate change, you might not consider a daily commute to work or a drive around town as big contributing factors. And yet, transport is the fastest growing source of CO2 emissions from fossil fuel, which in turn is the largest contributor to climate change. This is the key insight behind the mission of Spanish carbon-neutral multinational Acciona. The group, which provides sustainable solutions for infrastructure and renewable energy projects across 65 countries, launched an electric scooter sharing service called Acciona Mobility in 2018.

Aiming to contribute to the decarbonization of the transport sector while helping relieve traffic congestion within cities, Acciona Mobility enables users to rent electric scooters powered 100% by energy from renewable sources. Users can find, reserve, and rent the scooters at the tap of their mobile screens via the Acciona Mobility application and pay on the basis of minutes spent riding. The app, which is available free to download online, is also the gateway through which new users can register for the service, which welcomes anyone with a valid driver’s license for motorbikes. After having their right to drive, identity, and card details validated, citizens can start enjoying the service, available 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

“Acciona Mobility is exciting because it stems from our vision to make people’s lives easier in a sustainable way,” says Jose Luis Rosell, CIO of Acciona’s Services Division. “40% of the pollution near cities comes from private transportation. We want to help solve that problem with zero-carbon, electric, multimodal transportation that’s also convenient for people to use.”

However, Jose Luis says that building the appropriate IT infrastructure to bring the new service to life required external support. “We needed to deploy a reliable infrastructure for a new service before understanding exactly what its scale and demand would be. Our strategy was to adopt a serverless architecture that can grow with us to sustain our long-term vision,” he explains. “This kind of thinking led us directly to Google Cloud.”

Developing the transportation platform of the future

Because Acciona was already a Google Cloud customer, Jose Luis and his team reached the decision to develop the new service on Google Cloud with ease, as he explains: “We had a very positive experience working closely with the Google Cloud team during Acciona’s first project on Google Cloud, and that collaborative mentality is very important for us. We feel Google Cloud is a trustworthy partner that is willing to take risks with us and is flexible enough to lead us through business uncertainty with the right technology,” he says. “So we were confident that its technology and people could help us bring the Acciona Mobility service from theory to reality.”

This time, Acciona partnered with cloud consultancy Altostratus as well, to consult on a selection of Google Cloud products that would help develop the application quickly by making use of managed services. Acciona’s strategy was to launch the new services first in Madrid, where the company is headquartered, and then spread the vision across more cities later, if the idea worked out well in practice. Due to the scale of the project and its data needs, BigQuery was chosen as the primary data warehouse to store all the information related to the service, such as the location of scooters and their availability status. With all its data readily available on BigQuery, Acciona is able to run specific queries that help it to gain insights such as which urban areas have the highest volume of scooters being rented. Knowing this, Acciona can reorganize availability to make sure there are always enough scooters in that specific location.

Integrating it with Pub/Sub and Dataflow, Acciona ensures that the data generated by scooters is ingested and processed in real time so that users searching for scooters nearby, using the Acciona Mobility application on their phones, can always have up-to-date information at hand. Using Google Maps Platform APIs such as the Directions API, Acciona’s mobile app translates the geographical coordinates of scooters into an easy-to-read address displayed beside a visual map. Using Cloud SQL, Acciona automates the storage capacity management of the database as the number of scooters and active users grow.

Meanwhile, Google Cloud Armor protects the service against cyber breaches and distributed denial of service attacks to keep it running uninterrupted. In addition, Google Cloud itself helps to reinforce the cyber security measures with secure-by-default managed services, such as data encryption. “The managed services mean more resilience and more uptime, because we don’t need to worry about maintenance or external threats,“ says Jose Luis of the solutions protecting all information generated by the new service, which as CIO is a topic he holds dearly. “I face cybersecurity issues more confidently as a Google Cloud partner,” he adds.

Expanding an 100% sustainable transport solution throughout Spain

Within two months of the decision to deploy Acciona Mobility on Google Cloud, the service was ready for launch, filling the streets of Madrid with 500 electric scooters that run 100% on renewable energy. By 2020, the number of scooters has grown to 10,000 and the service has scaled to multiple cities in and outside of Spain, including Lisbon, Milan, and Rome. To date, more than 3.5 million intracity rides have used the Acciona Mobility app, reducing CO2 emissions by more than 1,000 tons.

Set to continue expanding, Acciona is using Google Kubernetes Engine to make sure the Acciona Mobility application has the computing capacity it needs to continue scaling to reach new markets and serve more users. On that note, Google operations tools (formerly Stackdriver) are also being deployed to help monitor, troubleshoot, and improve the performance of the application as it scales.
