What is Google Cloud SQL?
Cloud SQL is a fully managed relational database for MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server.
It reduces maintenance cost and automates database provisioning, storage capacity management, replication, and backups. It offers quick setup, with standard connection drivers and built-in migration tools.
How Do You Set It Up?
Cloud SQL is easy to setup. You select the region and zone where you would like the instance to be, and it gets created there.
You also have a lot of configuration options, where you can select the machine type with the right number of CPU and amount of memory you need.
Choose storage each type between solid state and hard disk drives, depending on latency queries per second and cost requirements and set storage capacity.
Higher storage capacity leads to better performance.
What About Back Up?
Cloud SQL also offers automated backups and recovery options.
You can set time slots and locations for backups. For production applications, it is recommended to enable high availability, or HA.
By enabling this feature, the database instancewill automatically failover to another zone in your selected region in case of an outage.
You can also create cross-regional replicas to protect from regional failures.
In addition, you can enable automatic storage increase to add more storage when nearing capacity.
How Do You Migrate an Existing MySQL Database to Cloud SQL?
Cloud console makes it very easy by providing a migrate data button, which guides you through easy steps.
First, you provide your data source details, things like public IP address, port number,
and your replication credentials.
Second, you create a Cloud SQL read replica, just like we discussed in the creation process, using a SQL dump file.
Third, you sync the read replica with source. And, finally, you promote the read replica to primary instance with very low downtime.
Is Data Safe in Cloud SQL?
Like anything else in Google Cloud, the data in Cloud SQL is encrypted at rest and in transit.
External connections can be encrypted using SSL or Cloud SQL Proxy, which is a tool to help you connect to your Cloud SQL instance from your local machines.
You can use Cloud SQL as a relational database for your applications that are hosted within Google Cloud, like App Engine, Cloud Run, Compute Engine, Kubernetes Engine, or Cloud Functions.
You can also connect your Cloud SQL database with applications that are hosted outside of Google Cloud.
How Much Does It Cost and What Are Some Uses Cases?
Cloud SQL pricing varies depending on MySQL, PostgreSQL,or SQL Server.
Broadly speaking, though, it’s the combination of the type of instance, storage, or network you use. SQL Server also has some licensing costs.
Since Cloud SQL is a relational database, you can use it with any online transaction processing apps, such as order or payment processing apps, where you need to handle frequent queries with fast response times.

In it, you’ll find the metrics-rich research behind the top five data and AI trends, along with tips and customer examples for incorporating them into your plans.

1: Show data silos the door
Given the increasing volumes of data we’re all managing, it’s no surprise that siloed transactional databases and warehousing strategies can’t meet modern demands. Organizations want to improve how they store, manage, analyze, and govern all their data, while reducing costs. They also want to eliminate conflicting insights from replicated data and empower everyone with fresh data.
A unified data cloud enables the integration of data and insights into transformative digital experiences and better decision making.

Gain tips from Yang and other experts for developing your AI strategy. And read how organizations achieve outcomes such as a reduction of 7,400 tons per year in carbon emissions and a more than 200% increase in ROI from ad spend by using pattern recognition and other AI capabilities.

4: Infuse insights everywhere
Yesterday’s BI solutions have led to outdated insights and user fatigue with the status quo, based on generic metrics and old information. Research shows that as new tools come online, expectations for BI are changing, with companies revising their strategies to improve decision making, speed up the development of new revenue streams, and increase customer acquisition and retention by providing individuals with needed information on demand.
Organizations are equipping business decision-makers with the tools they need to incorporate required insights into their everyday workflows.
Kate Wright, Senior Director, Product Management, Google Cloud
In the report, you’ll discover why and how data leaders are rethinking their BI analytics strategies and applications to improve users’ trust and use of data in automated workflows, customizable dashboards, and on-demand reports. Global companies also share how they improve decision making with self-service BI, customer experiences with IoT analysis, and threat mitigation with embedded analytics.

5: Get to know your unknown data
Increasing data volumes can make it harder to know where and what data they store, which may create risk. Case in point: If a customer unexpectedly shares personally identifiable information during a recorded customer support call or chat session, that data might require specialized governance, which the standardized storage process may not provide.
If you don’t know what data you have, you cannot know that it’s accurately secured. You also don’t know what security risks you are incurring, or what security measures you need to take.
Anton Chuvakin, Senior Staff Security Consultant, Google Cloud
Check out the report to learn about data security risks that are often overlooked and how to develop proactive governance strategies for your sensitive data. You can also read how global organizations have increased customer trust and productivity by improving how they discover, classify, and manage their structured and unstructured data.
Be ready for what’s next
What’s exciting about these trends is that they’re enabling organizations across industries to realize very different goals using their choice of technologies. And although all the trends depend on each other, research shows you can realize measurable benefits whether you adopt one or all five.
Review the report yourself and learn how you can refine your organization’s data and AI strategies by drawing on the collective insights, experiences, and successes of more than 800 global organizations.

Why do we need a BigQuery anti-pattern recognition tool?
BigQuery is a serverless and cost-effective enterprise data warehouse that works across cloud environments and scales with your data. As with any large scale data-intensive platform, following best practices and avoiding inefficient anti-patterns goes a long way in terms of performance and cost savings.
Usually SQL optimization requires a significant time investment from engineers, who must read high-complexity queries, devise a variety of approaches to improve performance and efficiency, and test several optimization techniques. The best place to start is to fix anti-patterns, since this only requires easily applicable changes and provides significant performance improvements.
To facilitate the task of identifying and fixing said anti-pattern, Google Professional Services Organization (PSO) and Global Services Delivery (GSD) have developed a BigQuery anti-pattern recognition tool. This tool automates the process of scanning SQL queries, identifying antipatterns, and providing optimization recommendations.

What is the BigQuery anti-pattern recognition tool?
The BigQuery anti-pattern recognition tool let you easily identify performance impacting anti-patterns across a large number of SQL queries in a single go.
It utilizes ZetaSQL to parse BigQuery SQL queries into abstract syntax trees (AST) and then traverses the tree nodes to detect the presence of anti-patterns.
The tool takes a BigQuery SQL query as an input, such as:
SELECT
t.dim1,
t.metric1
FROM
`dataset.table` t
WHERE
t.id NOT IN (
SELECT
id
FROM
`dataset.table2`)And produces the output as:
Subquery in filter without aggregation at line 8.
It examines potential optimizations, including:
- Selecting only the necessary columns
- Handling multiple WITH-clause references
- Addressing subqueries in filters with aggregations
- Optimizing ORDER BY queries with LIMIT
- Enhancing string comparisons
- Improving JOIN patterns
- Avoiding subquery aggregation in the WHERE clause
The solution supports reading from various sources, such as:
- Command line
- Local files
- Cloud Storage files
- Local folders
- Cloud Storage folders
- CSV (with one query per line)
- INFORMATION_SCHEMA
Additionally, the solution provides flexibility in writing output to different destinations, including:
- Printing to the terminal
- Exporting as CSV
Writing to a BigQuery table
