Consumption of content from streaming platforms grew exponentially in the last year, driving entertainment and media platforms to make meaningful usage of audience data for personalization, better UX and enhanced viewing experience. Spanish-language content and media company, Univision leveraged Google Cloud's AI, ML and data analytics tools to unveil useful insights that enhance engagement of it's global, Spanish-speaking audience.

The past year has given everyone lots to think about—about our priorities as people and as businesses. As the world retreated behind closed doors, we saw how shared interests and experiences can bring us together. As the world grappled with a common enemy, we witnessed just how differently individuals, communities and indeed entire countries can experience a situation. And as we faced seemingly unending obstacles to making it through the pandemic, we saw how making smart decisions based on data can drive meaningful solutions—fast.

That’s why we here at Google Cloud are so proud to partner Univision, the country’s leading Spanish-language content and media company. By partnering with Google Cloud, Univision will be able to accelerate growth across its portfolio of properties, deliver an enhanced user experience for Spanish-speaking audiences and provide the enterprise solutions needed to create the Spanish-language media company of the future.

According to Instituto Cervantes, there are over 580 million Spanish language speakers worldwide. Those viewers, like people everywhere, are avid consumers of streaming content. In Q4 of 2020 alone, viewing time for that content increased by 44%1, and in 2020, from 50%2 more sources. With that surge in demand, Univision needed a cloud provider whose infrastructure could reach Hispanic viewers around the world. With two-plus decades spent building out its network and data centers, as well as global content-delivery capabilities, Google Cloud has the infrastructure Univision needs to reach viewers across the Spanish-speaking world.

At the same time, with such a diverse audience for their content, Univision needs to target that content to viewers’ specific preferences. By applying Google Cloud’s artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technology across its content, Univision intends to personalize content based on shows users have previously watched, enhancing their engagement and viewing experience. 

And as Univision transforms the user experience, it can use Google Cloud’s data and analytics suite to garner deeper insights into its audience and forge stronger relationships with them on an individual basis. With Looker and BigQuery, Univision employees will have access to real-time data to help them make business decisions about programming.

Univision will also migrate video distribution and production operations to Google Cloud, where we’ll help them streamline media workflows and develop innovative new capabilities. Meanwhile, Google Cloud’s tight business and technical integration with other Google services will help ensure Univision reaches viewers on the device of their choice, wherever they are in the world. For example, in the coming years, Univision will expand its global YouTube partnership and will integrate with entertainment features on Google Search that help people better discover TV shows and movies. The company will also use Google Ad Manager for global ad decisioning and Google’s Dynamic Ad Insertion for PrendeTV and future video-on-demand offerings. Finally, Univision will distribute its content and services on Google Play across Android phones and tablets, as well as Google TV and other Android TV OS devices.

While stream analytics is a leading business priority, real-life use cases frequently require batch data as an input as well. Google Cloud Platform (GCP) customers can simplify their pipeline development by reusing code across both batch and stream processing using Apache Beam, which also provides pipeline portability to OSS projects. Further, Google Cloud’s data analytics portfolio autoscales across ingestion, processing, and analysis, which eliminates the need for provisioning and makes handling varying volumes of streaming data automatic. We hear from users that they’re able to ingest and process data much more quickly than in the past, helping to get new business insights faster and allowing more users to do self-serve analytics.

When Home Depot moved it's gigantic enterprise data warehouse to Google Cloud, it could not have imagined how much faster it could crunch data--for a variety of uses cases.

The Home Depot (THD) is the world’s largest home-improvement chain, growing to more than 2,200 stores and 700,000 products in four decades. Much of that success was driven through the analysis of data. This included developing sales forecasts, replenishing inventory through the supply chain network, and providing timely performance scorecards.

However, to compete in today’s business world, THD has taken this data-driven approach to an entirely new level of success on Google Cloud, providing capabilities not practical on legacy technologies.

The pressures of contemporary growth that drove much of the work are familiar to many businesses. In addition to everything it was doing, THD needed to better integrate the complexities in its related businesses, like tool rental and home services. It needed to better empower teams, including a fast-growing data analysis staff and store associates with mobile computing devices. It wanted to better use online commerce and artificial intelligence to meet customer needs, while maintaining better security.

Even before addressing these new challenges, THD’s existing on-premises data warehouse was under stress as more data was required for analytics and data analysts were utilizing the data with increasingly complex use cases. This drove rapid growth of the data warehouse, but also created constant challenges for the team in managing priorities, performance, and cost.

In order to add capacity to the environment, it was a major planning, architecture, and testing effort. In one case, adding on-premises capacity took six months of planning and a three-day service outage. Within a year, capacity was again scarce, impacting performance and ability to execute all the reporting and analytics workloads required. The capacity refresh cycles were shrinking, and the expecations for data were growing. There had to be a better way.

Still, THD did not take its move to the cloud lightly. A large-scale enterprise data warehouse migration involves tremendous effort among people, process, and technology. After careful consideration, THD chose Google Cloud’s BigQuery for its cloud enterprise data warehouse.

BigQuery, a scalable serverless data warehouse, was better on cost, infrastructure agility, and analytics capability, driving better insights with improved performance. There are no service interruptions when capacity is added, and that capacity can be added within a week (and soon same day). It doesn’t require complex system administration, and its standard SQL support means people can easily ramp up quickly. Valuable BigQuery products like Identity and Access Management meant THD could create many separate Google Cloud projects, while ensuring that different teams weren’t interfering with each other or accessing protected data.

THD also utilizes BigQuery’s flat-rate monthly pricing model that allows teams to budget their capacity based on need and provides billing predictability. The capacity not being used by a given project is available for enterprise use. This ensures no surprises when the monthly bill arrives and provides all analytical users access to significant computing power.

While THD’s legacy data warehouse contained 450 terabytes of data, the BigQuery enterprise data warehouse has over 15 petabytes. That means better decision-making by utilizing new datasets like website clickstream data and by analyzing additional years of data.

With the cloud EDW migration complete, and the legacy on-premises data warehouse retired, analysts now execute more complex and demanding workloads that they would not have been able to complete before, such as utilizing Datalab for orchestrating analytics through Python Notebooks, utilizing BigQuery ML for machine learning directly against the BigQuery data (no movement of large datasets), and AutoML to help determine the best model for predictions.

Additionally, engineers at THD have adapted BigQuery to monitor, analyze, and act on application performance data across all its stores and warehouses in real time, something that was not practical in the on-premises system.

With over 600 projects that THD now has on Google Cloud, the BigQuery story is just one of the many ways that Google Cloud is working with THD to deliver meaningful business results, every day.

Tata’s online healthcare entity, Tata 1mg, aims to revolutionize how a consumer finds the right healthcare professional for their needs. The platform offers e-pharmacy services, diagnostics, and health content and has more than 200,000 active brands in its rapidly expanding list of suppliers, sellers and manufacturers. Several of these brands would need regular involvement from the marketplace team in order to set up and run ad campaigns. As one of the largest platforms, Tata 1mg approached OnlineSales.ai to address their growing needs for an efficient Retail Media Monetisation suite to help scale up their existing monetisation efforts. 

Tata 1mg needed more data-driven insights and customizability for their monetisation efforts

Tata 1mg saw several challenges that they needed to address.

  1. Manual effort: Tata 1mg marketplace team’s monetization process was largely manual and required heavy time and resource investment to activate advertisers, which subsequently ate into their overall ad revenues.
  2. Non-scalable framework: Given the fast-growing number of advertisers on their marketplace – well into the hundreds of thousands – it became increasingly clear that their existing monetization framework was not scalable.
  3. Inadequate reporting & analytics: The existing framework facilitated only simple reporting, and brands were not able to draw the deep insights they needed to make data-led decisions and refine their advertising ROIs.
  4. Steep learning curve: Several brands lacked dedicated advertising experts who could bring the experience and skills needed to plan successful ad campaigns and optimize budgets. The involved learning curve led to increased advertiser-churn.
  5. Lack of personalized offerings: The manual nature of Tata 1mg’s monetization framework left little room for customizability, and account managers could offer very little in terms of tailored ad-buying experiences to different types of advertisers.

All of these issues led to regular revenue leakage. Tata 1mg realized the need for a central platform that addressed the above-mentioned issues and would also be able to cater to new ad channels and the requirements thereof. Developing such a solution in house was evaluated, but was found to be expensive and would require a lot of time to build.

OnlineSales.ai’s AI/ML-powered solution on Google Cloud offered the automation and flexibility to support modern omnichannel advertising needs

Therefore, Tata 1mg looked to OnlineSales.ai Monetize, an AI/ML-powered retail media monetisation suite on Google Cloud, to help address their needs for a cloud-based monetisation platform that offered the flexibility to support omnichannel advertising models, had automation built in to reduce manual tasks, provided detailed intelligence and analytics, and delivered quick, reliable scalability.

  1. White labeled self-serve platform: OnlineSales.ai’s retail media platform was implemented within a short 4 weeks. After thorough testing and implementation, the platform was successfully launched, and enabled sellers to run ads on a fully self-serve platform. This required zero involvement from the Tata team.
  2. Unified omni channel buying: The team at OnlineSales.ai worked closely with the platform’s core teams to activate and mobilize various advertising products through a self-serve platform, while simultaneously addressing any unique requirements they had.
  3. Omnichannel analytics with AI-led suggestions: Sellers are now also able to generate detailed reports that provide them critical insights into campaigns, and help them make better use of their budgets – enhancing their experience and interest in advertising on the platform.
  4. Personalized buying experiences: The tailored UX offered by OnlineSales.ai’s Monetize helped Tata engage brands of all levels in technical aptitude to use the platform easily. This also allowed admins to configure what types of inventories were available to different brands or advertiser segments.

OnlineSales.ai makes use of Google Cloud Dataflow to facilitate computations on real-time streaming. Microservices are deployed on the Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) platform due to the solution’s well-known ability to handle scale.

In addition, Dataproc is used by the company to run batch processing apps while Cloud Load Balancing helps manage traffic across different regions; all at scale. Onlinesales.ai also uses Memorystore as a database for their ad servers in order to have very low latency, and deploys BigQuery to run analytical applications and facilitate powerful reporting. The bulk of their office applications are deployed on different VMs on Compute Engine, and the company also makes use of Cloud Storage for data storage and transfers between applications.
