Backup and DR data is a valuable business asset, and ensuring that it’s safe and accessible is essential. In particular, you want to be able to monitor your backups to ensure that the data is indeed protected and that you can quickly recover it in the event of a disaster, user error, or failed upgrade.
Users of Google Cloud’s Backup and DR service often ask:
- What are the best practices for monitoring my backup and recovery jobs?
- How can I proactively identify issues and troubleshoot?
- How can I create alerts and be notified about important events?
The good news is that Google Cloud Backup and DR now integrates with Cloud Logging and Cloud Monitoring tools. Now, you can monitor backup events, jobs, appliance health, resource consumption and user actions in the same way you monitor other Google Cloud workloads and services.
With this integration, you can now:
- Monitor events related to backup and restore – With detailed Google Cloud Backup and DR service event logs in Cloud Logging, you can now use log based alerts to create a customisable notification, in near-real time. This lets you monitor important events such as backup job failures, jobs that did not run, local backup storage saturation, and network failures.
- Configure fine grained alerting – You can write custom event queries on a wide variety of dimensions such as event severity, application type, application name, job type, job name, error message and many more. This gives a lot of flexibility to define alerts for specific events or conditions within a system, thus reducing noise and helping you identify and fix issues easily.
- Get notified on your preferred notification channel – Google Cloud offers seven pre-built notification channels that let you receive customisable notifications directly over email, SMS, Slack or the Google Cloud mobile app. Alternatively, you can integrate with your own monitoring and event management tools using webhooks or Pub/Sub.
- Derive useful insights to troubleshoot issues – With Log Analytics, you can use BigQuery to query your data using SQL queries and generate operational insights, which can help you reduce time spent troubleshooting. For example, you can analyze the key reasons that backup and restore jobs fail for a given application or application type.
The integration also lets you proactively discover deeper issues related to backup and recovery, such as capacity-related issues or certain job failures that happen periodically, by monitoring recurring events in the logs over time. With log-based metrics, you can:
- Create trend charts to track important metrics such as the number of backup or restore jobs that failed during a day/week/month
- Receive a notification when the number of occurrences crosses a threshold, for example receive a notification if a snapshot pool saturates more than five times a week
- Monitor trends in data, such as latency values in logs, and receive a notification if the values change in an unacceptable way.

By integrating our Backup and DR service with Cloud Monitoring and Cloud Logging, you can get valuable assurances about the health of your backup and business continuity processes with the same tools that you use to manage other Google Cloud workloads. Today, we are excited to announce the general availability of Dataplex data lineage — a fully managed Dataplex capability that helps you understand how data is sourced and transformed within the organization. Dataplex data lineage automatically tracks data movement across BigQuery, BigLake, Cloud Data Fusion (Preview), and Cloud Composer (Preview), eliminating operational hassles around manual curation of lineage metadata.
With rising data volume spread across data silos, it can be challenging for organizations to ensure users have a self-service mechanism to discover, understand and trust the data. Organizations constantly struggle with questions such as:
- Is the data extracted from an authoritative source?
- What is the impact if I drop this table?
- The data in this table seems corrupted – where did this data come from, and when was it last refreshed?
- How is sensitive information being moved or copied? Is it in adherence to data governance practices?
To answer the above questions, organizations need to track how data is sourced and transformed, which can be complex and requires significant effort.
Dataplex data lineage describes each lineage relationship by detailing what happened and when it happened in an interactable lineage graph, providing data observability.

Data analysts who want to know if a table originates from an authoritative source can now answer this in a self-service manner with a simple look-up of lineage for the concerned table — available in Dataplex and in BigQuery for in-context analysis.
Data engineers can reduce time to identify and resolve data issues through root cause analysis using the operational metadata trace asserting a lineage relationship. Data lineage also aids deterministic change management by providing the ability to evaluate the impact of a change and collaborate with the corresponding stakeholders to minimize any adverse impact.
Finally, data lineage provides a map of data movement which can become the foundation for data governance practice. It enables data stewards and owners to evaluate and enforce adherence to governance requirements, especially when tracking the movement of sensitive information.

Dataplex is built for distributed data. We are starting with data stored in Google Cloud Storage and BigQuery, with support for other data sources coming soon. It provides a workflow-driven experience helping you build an open data platform and make data easily accessible to your end users while ensuring your policies and best practices are consistently enforced.
Organizing and curating your data
One of the core tenets of Dataplex is letting you organize and manage your data in a way that makes sense for your business, without data movement or duplication. For that, we are providing logical constructs like lakes, data zones and assets. Those constructs enable you to abstract away the underlying storage systems and become the foundation for setting policies around data access, security, lifecycle management, and so on.
For example, you can create a lake per department within your organization (Retail, Sales, Finance, etc.) and create data zones that map to data readiness and usage (landing, raw, curated_data_analytics, curated_data_science, etc.).
Once you have your lakes and zones setup, you can now attach data to these zones as assets. You can add data from different types of storage (e.g. GCS Bucket and BigQuery dataset) under the same zone. You can also attach data across multiple projects under the same zone.

You can ingest data into your lakes and zones using the tools of your choice including services such as Dataflow, Data Fusion, Dataproc, Pub/Sub or choose from one of our partner products. Dataplex provides built-in 1-click templates for common data management tasks.
Securing your data
Dataplex enables you to define and enforce consistent policies across your data, irrespective of where it physically resides. Data owners can easily set up policies for specific data domains based on business needs, without thinking about where the data is stored while data stewards get global visibility into governance policies and permissions across their data.
You can apply security and governance policies for your entire lake, a specific zone, or an asset. Dataplex maps the policies to the underlying storage and pushes down permissions to the storage layer to provide end-to-end secure data access. Additionally, you can secure not just data but also related artifacts like notebooks, scripts, and models using the same set of access policies.
Making high quality data available for analytics and data science
One of the biggest differentiators for Dataplex is our data intelligence capabilities using Google’s best in class AI/ML technologies. As you bring the data under management, Dataplex will automatically harvest the metadata for both structured and unstructured data, with built-in data quality checks. All of the metadata is automatically registered in a unified metastore, and made available for search and discovery. It is also published to Bigquery, Dataproc Metastore, and Data Catalog – ensuring that you have the same consistent data context and access across your tools.
For example, when you write parquet files to a Google Cloud Storage bucket – Dataplex will automatically extract metadata of these files, detect a tabular schema, including hive-style partitions, run data quality checks, and make this data queryable in BigQuery as an external table and from any open source or partner application – with the same consistent security and access policies you defined at the logical data layer.
Your data scientists and analysts now have secured access to this data that meets your quality bar and governance rules via the tools of their choice, without needing any additional processing.

One-click access to collaborative analytics
Dataplex provides fully managed, one-click analytics environments enabling you to use the power of Apache Spark and BigQuery with support for other engines coming in the future.
As data administrators, you now have the flexibility to pre-configure these environments with the right cost and financial governance measures without taking on the overhead of managing and maintaining the infrastructure required to power these environments. You can easily configure different environments for different types of workloads and share it with multiple users using their IAM credentials. Dataplex manages the provisioning, monitoring, scaling, and shutdown of these environments.
As data scientists, analysts, and engineers, you now have a turn-key experience to run your analysis using notebooks and a SQL workbench. Autoclass: Simplify and Automate Cost Optimization for Cloud Storage

There is a data explosion challenge that most IT admins and companies are tackling regularly. The cost-effectiveness, durability and scalability make object storage the first choice for unstructured data. Cloud Storage is an object storage service capable of storing data at exabyte scale and easily managing billions, if not trillions, of objects. However, cost optimization for data stored in object storage is a hard problem.
Choosing the right storage class for your data requires you to know about the access patterns for this data. However, if the access patterns are unknown or unpredictable, it’s often difficult for customers to choose the right storage class for their data. Data placement can have a significant impact on cost as the storage price for the archive class is 6% the storage price for the standard storage class. Having frequently accessed data in colder storage classes can lead to unexpected operations charges. Having data that is never accessed in standard storage can lead to large at-rest storage bills.
As IT administrators and organizations enable different applications and workloads to start leveraging object storage at massive scale, optimizing for cost is only getting exponentially harder to solve. As they migrate workloads to cloud they would like to have predictability and control in their overall storage spend. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to automatically place your data in the best storage class?
Introducing Autoclass – a new managed data placement service for Cloud Storage.
Simplifying Lifecycle Management while Reducing TCO
Autoclass is an easy to use bucket-level setting that simplifies and automates lifecycle management of all your Cloud Storage data based on last access time.
This is very useful for workloads with unpredictable and unknown access patterns. It automatically moves data that is not accessed to colder storage classes to reduce at-rest storage cost. When cold data is accessed, it is automatically promoted to Standard storage class to optimize the operations costs for future accesses.
Autoclass automatically delivers cost savings and removes inefficiencies by moving data to the storage class with the most favorable pricing for customer workloads.
It helps organizations achieve price predictability by removing surcharges associated with colder storage classes – there are no early deletion fees, retrieval fees or operations charges for class transitions when Autoclass is enabled on a bucket.

Using Autoclass
With this release, Autoclass can be enabled when you create a new Cloud Storage bucket by using CLI, API, or Cloud Console. Once enabled on a bucket, Autoclass will manage the lifecycle of all objects that are uploaded to the bucket until disabled.
If you choose to disable Autoclass, all the objects in the bucket will remain in their current storage class. This disablement doesn’t require any data movement or any changes to storage classes of objects and hence, incurs no charge.
The support for enabling Autoclass on existing Cloud Storage buckets will be available in an upcoming release in 2023.

All transitions carried out by Autoclass can be observed using Cloud Monitoring dashboards. This provides easy observability and allows you to validate what Autoclass is doing for your data in an automated way. These dashboards can leverage 2 new Cloud metrics published for Autoclass:
- Number of objects transitioned by Autoclass (autoclass/transition_operation_count)
- Number of bytes transitioned between classes by Autoclass (autoclass/transitioned_bytes_count)

Getting Started
