Verve Group is an ecosystem of demand and supply technologies fusing data, media, and technology to deliver results and growth to both advertisers and publishers – no matter the screen or location, no matter who, what, or where a customer is. Classifying massive amounts of this unstructured data at scale is the first step in helping to surface relevant, high-quality content to users—and that’s where natural language processing (NLP) comes in.

Verve Group uses the NLP API from Google Cloud’s Vertex AI to fetch data for their internal content classification quality verification and as an additional source for building categorization models. By leveraging the NLP API’s Content Classification models, which are now generally available and offer Google’s latest large language model (LLM) technology, Verve Group powers classification through an updated and expanded training data set with over 1,000 labels and support for 11 languages (Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russia, Spanish, and Dutch join previously-available English). 

Verve Group has been using Google Cloud’s NLP API since day one, because of both the ease of implementation and the quality compared to competing NLP products. With documentation that is “comprehensive and self-explanatory,” the NLP API “allows for fast adoption and implementation, from test models all the way to production,” said Rami Alanko, GM of Verve Group.

Leveraging the NLP API has facilitated Verve Group’s fast go-to-market motions by enabling its customers to quickly discover and classify new content. “Operating on a global level with tens of different regions and languages, we have still been able to maintain high quality for our product and high retention rates with our clients,” Rami shared. “In a recent client case, we achieved 82% improvement in CTR when optimized with content quality measurements enabled by the API. In another client case, we drove brand safety risk down to 0.16% from 4% thanks to classification quality. Along with the new functionalities of the Google NLP, I can only see this trend continuing to strengthen.”

Verve Group is excited to further expand their NLP use cases by leveraging the new Content Classification models, which have already helped them expand their classification inventory, improve the quality and performance of their quality verification for customers, and unlock new use cases for NLP. “Our classification model accuracy improved 41% using Google NLP as a verification partner,” said Rami.  

Additionally, Verve Group is now using the API for metadata analysis on a  large image database. “We browse the database and run the image metadata via our classification. This flow enables us to classify images reliably aligned with our standard classification.  We pretty much use the same data flow for our runtime in-app textual content analysis, therefore allowing for close to real-time consumer engagement,” Rami added.

From information to action

With the gross energy-related emissions footprint of data associated with your Google Cloud usage now available, we’re committed to providing tools to not only measure your carbon footprint, but help you reduce it. We recently launched low-carbon region icons to help you choose cleaner regions to locate your Google Cloud resources. New users who see the icons are over 50% more likely to choose clean regions over others, ensuring their applications emit less carbon over time. 

For current Google Cloud users, we’re pleased to announce that Active Assist Recommender will include a new sustainability impact category, extending its original core pillars of cost, performance, security, and manageability. Starting with the Unattended Project Recommender, you’ll soon be able to estimate the gross carbon emissions you’ll save by removing your idle resources. Unattended Project Recommender uses machine learning to identify, with a high degree of confidence, projects that are likely abandoned based on API and networking activity, billing, usage of cloud services, and other signals, and provides actionable recommendations on how to remediate those abandoned projects. By deleting these projects, not only can you reduce costs and mitigate security risks, but you can also reduce your carbon emissions. In August, Active Assist analyzed the aggregate data from all customers across our platform, and over 600,000 gross kgCo2e was associated with projects that it recommended for cleanup or reclamation. If customers deleted these projects they would significantly reduce future gross carbon emissions. Check out this blog to learn more about Active Assist.

Over the past year we’ve worked with a number of organizations to use Earth Engine technology with tools like BigQuery and the Cloud AI Platform to develop new solutions for responsible commodity sourcing, sustainable land management and carbon emissions reduction. As I type this blog in a Google Doc, I can’t help but think about how much we rely on digital documents to communicate, collaborate, and do business. Yet most of the data in documents remains un-analyzed. Even when documents are part of customer-facing workflows like processing a mortgage application or a contract, businesses frequently struggle with the data those documents contain. Often, even finding the right document in a haystack of thousands across the organization can be challenging. To resolve these difficulties, most organizations rely on manual, time-consuming, and resource-intensive processes—all of which are incredibly frustrating for employees at the forefront of document workflows.

Because of challenges like these, in 2020, we launched Document AI, an AI agent that lets organizations apply machine learning (ML) to their hardest document automation problems. Since then, we have introduced specialized models to extract data for industry-specific use cases such as mortgage processing and procurement. With the launch of Document AI Workbench and Document AI Warehouse at Google Cloud Next ‘22, we’ve continued to take significant steps in our mission to help organizations simplify and automate document processing. Let’s double click on each of these announcements.

Custom document processing with Document AI Workbench

With Document AI Workbench, organizations can process documents by creating custom ML models that are specific to their business needs and extract unstructured data with a high degree of accuracy. Thanks to the user-friendly interface, even business users who do not have extensive ML skills can get started training or uptraining models.

Moreover, if an organization wants to transfer learning from pretrained models and enhance a model further to, say, include new fields, users can now do so by what we call “uptraining.” The uptraining feature is especially valuable for the most common yet complex use cases because it helps to save time and resources, so businesses don’t have to start from scratch. Uptraining for the invoice, purchase order (PO), contracts, W2, 1099-R, payslip, and 1040 pre-trained models unlocks new possibilities for improving accuracy, adding new language support, and schema customization.

We’re continuing to invest in these pretrained models. At Next’22, we announced an update to our invoice and expense pre-trained models with improvements to normalization and line item entities detection, as well as new ID proofing capabilities via a flexible API designed to spot fake, altered, or doctored ID documents. We’ve also added support for five new languages across invoice and expense models, in addition to the 12 previously-supported languages, and expanded availability in Canada and Australia regions, in addition to previously-supported US, EU, and Singapore regions.

According to Daan De Groodt, Managing Director, Deloitte Consulting LLP, Document AI Workbench “is poised to be a game changer, because we can now uptrain various text documents and forms utilizing powerful Google Machine Learning models to get the desired accuracy creating greater time and resource efficiencies for our clients.”

And customers are already seeing benefits. Libeo used Document AI to uptrain an invoice parser with 1,600 documents and increase its testing accuracy from 75.6% to 83.9%. “Thanks to uptraining, the Document AI results now beat the results of a competitor and will help Libeo save ~20% on the overall cost for model training over the long run,” said Libeo chief technology officer, Pierre-Antoine Glandier.

Google-powered document search with Document AI Warehouse

With Document AI Warehouse we are bringing the best of Google’s semantic search to documents. Document AI Warehouse lets enterprises search, store, govern and manage documents and their AI-extracted data and metadata in a single platform. With Document AI Warehouse’s simple and intuitive web accessible user interface, users can explore, view, bulk update and organize documents into folders. Document AI Warehouse offers robust enterprise control and governance so you can control who has access at the document and folder levels and assign users and groups permissions to view, edit, manage (share, delete) documents. You can migrate, sync, or federate documents from other repositories, such as Microsoft SharePoint, Amazon S3, and IBM FileNet. Or if that’s not an option we simply index the content and any extracted/tagged metadata).

We also will consolidate a number of next-generation product enhancements on Document AI OCR and Form Parser by the end of this year – including deeper insights into document quality & semantics, a unified document OCR experience, expanded language coverage for Form Parser, and advanced tooling for model lifecycle management. Google’s DeepMind team developed a new method that allows the creation of document parsing ML models for utility bills and purchase orders with 50%-70% less training data than what was previously needed for Document AI. We’re working on integrating this method into Document AI Workbench in the coming months.

ShareChat Builds its Diverse, Hyperlocal Social Network. Thanks to Google Cloud

Smartphone penetration and mobile data usage across India opened doors to large scale consumption of social media content on platforms such as ShareChat to document lives, share opinions and virtually interaction. Due to the language diversity, ShareChat's scale of reach (upto 80 million MAUs) and network latency challenges in India, the platform provider turned to Google Cloud's robust framework and its managed data cloud services to deliver language specific, high-quality content to the right audience.

Editor’s note: Today’s guest post comes from Indian social media platform ShareChat. Here’s the story of how they improved performance, app development, and analytics for serving regional content to millions of users using Google Cloud. 

How do you create a social network when your country has 22 major official languages and countless active regional dialects? At ShareChat, we serve more than 160 million monthly active users who share and view videos, images, GIFs, songs, and more in 15 different Indian languages. We also launched a short video platform in 2020, Moj, which already supports over 80 million monthly active users. 

Connecting with people in the language they understand

As mobile data and smartphones have become more affordable in India, we noticed a large new segment of people, many in rural areas, being welcomed onto the internet. However, many of them didn’t speak English, and when it comes to accessing content and information—language plays a significant role. Instead of joining other social media sites where English reigned supreme, new internet users chose to join language or dialect-specific Whatsapp groups where they felt more comfortable instead.

So, we set out to build a platform where people can share their opinions, document their lives, and make new friends, all in their native language. ShareChat simplifies content and people discovery by using a personalized content newsfeed to deliver language-specific content to the right audience.

Given the high-intensity data and high volume of content and traffic, we rely heavily on IT infrastructure. On top of that, a large number of our users rely on 2G networks to post, like, view, or follow each other. Our platform needs to deliver great experiences to people who are spread out across the country and different networks without any reduction in performance.

The right cloud partner to support future growth

ShareChat was born in the cloud—we already knew how to scale systems to serve a large customer base with our existing cloud provider. But like many companies, we struggled with over-provisioning compute and storage to accommodate unpredictable traffic and avoid running out of storage. With demand rising for local language content and an increase in online interactions in response to the COVID-19 crisis, we realized that we would need a more efficient way to scale dynamically and allocate resources as needed.

Google Cloud was a natural choice for us. We wanted to partner with a technology-first company that would make it easy (and cost-effective) to manage a strong technology portfolio that would allow us to build whatever we wanted. Google is at the forefront of technology innovation and provided everything we needed to build, run, and manage our applications (including creating an efficient DevOps pipeline to fix and release new features quickly). 

We had a few issues in mind at the start of discussions with the Google Cloud team, but over time, as we got information and support from them, we realized that these were the partners we wanted in our corner when it came time to tackle our most challenging problems. In the end, we decided to take our entire infrastructure to Google Cloud.

To support millions of users, we deploy and scale using Google Kubernetes Engine. While we analyze our data using a combination of managed data cloud services, such as Pub/Sub for data pipelines, BigQuery for analytics, Cloud Spanner for real-time app serving workloads, and Cloud Bigtable for less-indexed databases. We also rely on Cloud CDN to help us distribute high-quality and reliable content delivery at low latency to our users. 

We now use just half the total core consumption of our legacy environment to run ShareChat’s existing workloads.

Google Cloud delivers better outcomes at every level 

By moving to Google Cloud, we saw major benefits in several key areas: 

Zero-downtime migration for users

At the time of migration, we had over 70 terabytes of data, consisting of 220 tables—some of which were up to 14 terabytes with nearly 50 billion rows. Due to our data’s interdependencies, moving services over one at a time wasn’t an option for us. 

Even though we were migrating such large volumes of data, we didn’t want to impact any of our customers. Latency spikes for out-of-sync data might affect message delivery. For instance, if a message or notification was delayed, we didn’t want to risk a bad user experience causing someone to abandon ShareChat. 

To prepare for the move, we ran a proof-of-concept cluster for over four months to test database performance in a real-world scenario for handling more than a million queries per second. Using an open-source API gateway, we replicated our legacy data environment into Google Cloud for performance testing and capacity analysis. As soon as we were confident Google Cloud could handle the same traffic as our previous cloud environment, we were ready to execute.

Using wrappers, we were able to migrate without having to change anything in our existing application code. The entire migration of 60 million users to Google Cloud took five hours—without any data loss or downtime. Today, ShareChat has grown to 160 million users, and Google Cloud continues to give us the support we need.

Scaling globally to meet unexpected demand

We rely on real-time data to drive everything on ShareChat by tracking everything that goes on in our app—from messages and new groups to content people like or who they follow. Our users create more than a million posts per day, so it’s critical that our systems can process massive amounts of data efficiently. 

We chose to migrate to Spanner for its global consistency and secondary index. Unlike our legacy NoSQL database, we could scale without having to rethink existing tables or schema definitions and keep our data systems in sync across multiple locations. It’s also cost-effective for us—moving over 120 tables with 17 indexes into Cloud Spanner reduced our costs by 30%.

Spanner also replicates data seamlessly in multiple locations in real time, enabling us to retrieve documents if one region fails. For instance, when our traffic unexpectedly grew by 500% over just a few days, we were able to scale horizontally with zero lines of code change. We were also launching our Moj video app simultaneously, and we were able to move it to another region without a single issue. 

Simplifying development and deployment

On average, we experience about 80,000 requests per second (RPS) –nearly 7 billion RPS per day. That means daily push notifications sent out to the entire user base about daily trending topics can often result in a spike of 130,000 RPS in just a few seconds. 

Instead of over-provisioning, Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) enables us to pre-scale for traffic spikes around scheduled events, such as holidays like Diwali, when millions of Indians send each other greetings. 

Migrating to GKE has also enabled us to adopt more agile ways of work, such as automating deployment and saving time with writing scripts. Even though we were already using container-based solutions, they lacked transparency and coverage across the entire deployment funnel. 

Kubernetes features, such as sidecar proxy, allows us to attach peripheral tasks like logging into the application without requiring us to make code changes. Kubernetes upgrades are managed by default, so we don’t have to worry about maintenance and stay focused on more valuable work. Clusters and nodes automatically upgrade to run the latest version, minimizing security risks and ensuring we always have access to the latest features.

Low latency and real-time ML predictions

Even though many of our users may be accessing ShareChat outside of metropolitan areas, it doesn’t mean they’re more patient if the app loads slowly or their messages are delayed. We strive to deliver a high-performance experience, regardless of where our users are. 

We use Cloud CDN to cache data in five Google Cloud Point of Presence (PoP) locations at the edge in India, allowing us to bring content as close as possible to people and speeding up load time. Since moving to Cloud CDN, our cache hit ratio has improved from 90% to 98.5%—meaning our cache can handle 98.5% of content requests. 

As we expand globally, we’d like to use machine learning to reach new people with content in different languages. We want to build new algorithms to process real-time datasets in regional languages and accurately predict what people want to see. Google Cloud gives us an infrastructure optimized to handle compute-intensive workloads that will be useful to us both now—and in the future.  

The confidence to build the best platform

Our current system now performs better than before we migrated, but we are continuously building new features on top of it. Google’s data cloud has provided us with an elegant ecosystem of services that allows us to build whatever we want, more easily and faster than ever before. 

Perhaps the biggest advantage of partnering with Google Cloud has been the connection we have with the engineers at Google. If we’re working to solve a specific problem statement and find a specific solution in a library or a piece of code, we have the ability to immediately connect with the team responsible for it. 

As a result, we have experienced a massive boost in our confidence. We know that we can build a really good system because we not only have a good process in place to solve problems—we have the right support behind us.

Customers reach out to contact centers for help in moments of urgent need, but due to increasing demands, new channels, peak times, and operational pressures, contact centers often struggle to provide timely help. To bridge this gap, enterprises are increasingly investing in AI-driven solutions that balance addressing customer expectations with operational efficiency.

But building and generating value from such solutions can be complicated and challenging. Google Cloud built Contact Center AI (CCAI) to streamline and shorten this time to value, and CCAI Platform, our newest addition, takes a crucial step in this effort by introducing end-to-end call center capabilities. After debuting these new capabilities in March, we are excited to announce that CCAI Platform is now generally available across the US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain—with more markets soon to come.

Delivering world-class customer experiences and accelerating time-to-value with CCAI

CCAI encompasses a comprehensive set of offerings to address the top pain points of the three main user groups in the contact center: contact center owners, their agents, and the customers they serve.

Dialogflow lets the contact center manager scale their operations while balancing cost and customer satisfaction, including reducing painful, long waiting times endured by end users. Using Dialogflow, contact center managers can build complex chat and voice virtual agents—a proven, cost-effective way to scale contact centers while continuing to provide great customer experiences. Available 24/7, without any waiting queue, these virtual agents can converse naturally with customers, identify their issues, and address them effectively.

Agent Assist reduces overall handling time and coaches human agents to become more effective and helpful. The service uses AI to “listen” to the voice and chat conversations between the human representative and the customer, then provides real-time guidance and recommendations to the agent, based on historical conversations, knowledge bases, and best practices of experienced agents. It also automates post-call actions such as transcription and call summarization, saving significant time and overhead at the end of every call.

CCAI Insights stores and analyzes all the customer conversations in the contact center, whether with human or virtual agents, to provide leaders with real-time, actionable data points on customer queries, agent performance, sentiment trends, and opportunities for automation.

At the heart of these technologies is our conversational AI brain. It uses Google Research’s technology to talk, understand, and interact, enabling and orchestrating high-quality conversational experiences at scale.

CCAI Platform: a modern CCaaS and the shortest path to CCAI value

While the value of the CCAI offerings is clear to our customers, we also hear from them that integrating these solutions with legacy infrastructure takes too long.

To minimize these integration difficulties, accelerate time-to-value using the CCAI offerings, and help businesses provide outstanding customer experiences, we’re pleased to announce the general availability of CCAI Platform, the Contact Center as a Service (CCaaS) solution from Google Cloud built in partnership with UJET.

CCAI Platform is a modern, turnkey Contact Center as a service solution, designed with user-first, AI-first, and mobile-first principles. It offers:

  • Turnkey core Contact Center capabilities out-of-the-box, for faster time to production, lower implementation overhead, and custom development needed
  • AI-powered experiences, from routing to better handling customer interactions
  • Deep integration with CCAI’s offerings, to provide a unified end-to-end experience for contact center transformation
  • Mobile-first design that enables interactions in line with the way people expect to communicate across channels
  • CRM-centered design with automated updates, so agents can focus on the customer
  • Deployment flexibility, with customer data residing in their CRM and the flexibility to bring their own telephony carrier to minimize cost

All of this is available without the typical need to integrate complex technologies from multiple providers.

The Contact Center conversation is just beginning

This launch is part of a broader effort to deliver more value, faster, to more CCAI customers. As companies replace interactive voice response (IVR) with intelligent virtual agents (IVA) and begin to collect and analyze data, use cases are likely to grow more sophisticated—which is one reason Google Cloud is continuing to invest in technologies to make our CCAI offerings even more useful, as well as best practices like the following:

  • CCAI Agent Assist and Insights are a great first step in AI transformation. They let contact center owners enable call transcription and use Topic Modeling to identify conversation themes that demand attention. Human agents can automatically generate high-quality conversation summaries to reduce call wrap-up time, and the associated costs, while improving business insights. We are working to make these features available both in CCAI Platform and with our partner ISVs.
  • Chat and call steering are the first step for IVA automation. Another area of broad impact is conversational chat or call steering, in which friction is reduced by routing customers to the correct virtual or live agent experience. Many call centers rely on IVR systems in which customers have to use a keypad to select an option. Enterprise leaders tell us that attrition is very high throughout this process: some customers angrily hang up without resolution and, just as bad, many simply pound a single key in hopes of reaching a human agent, leading to the customer reaching the wrong person because their issue was never correctly identified or routed. Using Dialogflow’s natural language understanding (NLU) capabilities can sweep away such problems, with the customer more likely to not only reach the appropriate resources, but also share conversational data from which insights can be gleaned. It’s an approach that can pay dividends right away, and a quick first step to IVA automation.

In coming months, we will continue to work on these and other capabilities that are targeted to deliver higher and quicker value to our customers. We plan to release pre-built components to help companies tackle call center use cases in specific industries, for example. We’ll also continue to partner with companies that share our vision of transforming customer experiences with AI, such as TTEC, a provider of customer experience technology and software.
