How Google Cloud Helps SAP Admins Create Scalable, Secure Networks

SAP forms the critical backbone of thousands of enterprises, supporting critical business functions such as finance, supply chain, warehouse management, and more. Google Cloud provides a highly scalable and resilient infrastructure to run such workloads and offers tools, such as Smart Analytics and Machine Learning that can accelerate your organization’s digital transformation. 

In fact, a recent study by Forrester found that running SAP on Google Cloud can generate a 160% return on investment and a payback period of six months or less, thanks to legacy infrastructure cost savings, downtime avoidance, and productivity improvements.

How you deploy your SAP systems across your network has a tremendous impact on its availability, resilience, and performance. In addition to separate production and high-availability (HA) environments, SAP deployments typically include sandbox, development, quality assurance (QA), and disaster recovery environments as well. 

Because most of the Google network is virtual, SAP administrators can easily design complex landscapes that suit your organization’s SAP deployment and organizational structure while also meeting security and operational requirements. 

As you get started with SAP on Google Cloud, you’ll need to decide how to configure your networking to ensure the availability and performance of various SAP systems. Here’s a look at your options.

VPC and shared VPC

A virtual private cloud (VPC) is a secure, isolated private network hosted within Google Cloud. VPCs are global in Google Cloud, so a single VPC can span multiple regions without communicating across the public internet. Similarly, subnets can span across zones within a region. A zone represents a single failure domain, so typical SAP deployments place production and HA systems in different zones to ensure resiliency. Google Cloud simplifies this type of deployment, because subnets containing both production and HA systems can span multiple zones.  

This capability also simplifies SAP clustering, since the cluster’s virtual IP (VIP) address can be in the same range as those of the production and HA machines. This configuration shields the floating IP using Google internal load balancers and is applicable to HA clustering of the application layer (ASCS and ERS) and the HANA database layer (HANA Primary and Secondary).

Shared VPCs are a feature unique to Google Cloud that allows an organization to connect resources from multiple projects to a common VPC network. This lets them communicate with each other securely and efficiently using internal IPs. You can also centrally control the network for all SAP projects (service) from the Host project while using firewalls to inspect communication between compute engines in the same subnet, and between those in different subnets. (Best practice is to limit the communication between these systems to only the required ports — typically via SAP remote function call (RFC) communication at Layer 4.)

When designing your network, start with a host project containing one or more Shared VPC networks. You can attach additional service projects to a host project, which allows them to participate in the Shared VPC. It’s common practice to have multiple service projects operated and administered by various departments or teams in your organization.

Depending on your needs, you can deploy SAP on a single Shared VPC or multiple ones. The two scenarios differ in terms of network control, SAP environment isolation, and network inspection. Let’s look more closely at these differences.

Scenario 1: Deploying SAP on a single Shared VPC

If you require only a single network inspection, deploying SAP on a single Shared VPC has the advantage of simplicity and reduces administrative overhead.

  • Network control: The Shared VPC serves as the network hub, allowing central network management based on identity access management (IAM) roles for the network team(s) in both production and non-production environments.
  • SAP environment isolation: You can create projects and subnets for each SAP environment. Projects help group resources together for finer IAM control and billing visibility, while subnets provide network isolation for individual SAP environments. In service projects, compute engines can communicate by default; however, you can adopt simple firewall rules to block communication between compute engines within a subnet or in separate subnets.
  • Network inspection: Use Google Cloud firewalls to allow only the required ports for communication between SAP systems. Leverage network tags and service accounts to define granular control for both north-south and east-west traffic.

Scenario 2: Multiple Shared VPCs for SAP deployment

In scenarios requiring additional network inspections, you can create multiple Shared VPCs, typically one per environment. Use peering between these Shared VPCs to enable RFC communication among the SAP development, QA, and production systems.

  • Network isolation: Multiple Shared VPCs are completely isolated from each other except via specific ports opened in Google Cloud firewalls. This allows additional East-West traffic inspection by a Network Virtual Appliance (NVA) within a Google Cloud network. 
  • Network control:As the number of Shared VPCs increases, activities such as peering and firewall policies also increase. This diminishes the central network control that Shared VPCs offer, so the network team should plan to manage the policies in each VPC separately.

Hybrid scenarios – for example, one Shared VPC for the production environment and one Shared VPC for all non-production systems — are also possible. This arrangement allows network inspection between production and non-production systems, and limits the number of central network administration layers to two.

Configuring the networking environment for multiple SAP systems can be a complex process. Thanks to Google Cloud’s Shared Virtual Clouds and other tools, SAP administrators can create scalable, secure networks that provide logic, resilience, and visibility to their cloud deployments.Learn more about these networking capabilities and our full offerings for SAP customers.

To combat the talent shortage for digital skills, Indonesia has introduced Bangkit. It’s a Google-led academy that aims to produce 9 million high-caliber, technical talent for Indonesian technology companies and startups by 2030.

Indonesia is leading the way for digital transformation in Southeast Asia. According to Google’s e-Conomy South East Asia report, the country’s 2030 Gross Merchandise Value – the value of online retailing to consumers –  could be twice the value of the whole of Southeast Asia today.  

This growth means that many companies need more qualified IT graduates and employees with digital skills than they have today. Fast-growing tech companies need more qualified IT graduates, and employees with digital skills. According to the World Bank, Indonesia needs an additional nine million people with digital skills by 2030. The shortage of technical talent reiterates the need to invest in a reliable skills pipeline.

Following years of digital talent developments in Indonesia, Google has become a supporter of Bangkit, an academy designed to produce high-caliber technical talent for Indonesian technology companies and startups. Bangkit has facilitated a multi-stakeholder collaboration between Google, government, industry, and universities across Indonesia. 

Last year, the President of Indonesia and the Ministry of Education and Culture, Research, and Technology, acknowledged Bangkit’s significant impact, with 3,000 students completing nearly 15,000 courses and specialisations. 

Building on last year’s success, Bangkit started its 2022 program in February, offering three learning paths to students:

Bangkit 2022 has enrolled 3,100 university students who will take a five month study course, obtaining university study credit, as well as industry certifications. The program accepts diverse cohorts of people who are passionate about preparing for a tech career in the near future, with support and encouragement for women, people with disabilities, and students from across Indonesia to apply. 

Since its pilot in 2019, Bangkit has been guided by three principles:  

  • Industry-led: provides curriculum and instructors from industry experts, including Google, GoTo and Traveloka. Instructors include key figures such as Laurence Moroney (Google, Lead AI Advocate), Google Developer Experts, and other committed professionals. 
  • Immersive: combines online learning methods conducted in both individual and group settings.  
  • Interdisciplinary: contains knowledge and best practices in tech, soft skills, and English to provide complete career readiness. 

The program runs from February to July 2022, and has a 900-hour curriculum throughout the 18-week learning experience.

While the shift to digital business and the cloud has been well under way for some years now, organizations today have a new sense of urgency due to COVID-19. Delivering digital transformation is no longer a ‘nice to have’ option, rather, it is an operational imperative. The retailer was able to quickly pivot by adjusting its business rules in Manhattan Distributed Order Management (part of Manhattan Active Omni) to expose store inventory to online consumers and reroute its fulfillment processes. Thanks to Manhattan’s solution delivered through Google Cloud, in a matter of days, PVH was able to leverage both its distribution centers and vast store network to fulfill its online orders.

“The events of 2020 have accelerated retail and ecommerce operations forward,” said David Herridge, executive vice president of Global Value Chain Technologies for PVH. “With quick, creative thinking and the right partner, we were able to pivot operations, satisfy our customers and prepare for the future.”

  • Providing dedicated node hosting/remote procedure call (RPC) nodes for developers, allowing users to deploy blockchain validators on Google Cloud via a single click (“click to deploy”).
  • Participating in node validation and on-chain governance with select partners.
  • Helping developers and users host their nodes on the cleanest cloud in the industry, supporting their environmental, social, and governance initiatives.
  • Supporting on-chain governance via participation from Google Cloud executives and senior engineers.
  • Hosting several public BigQuery datasets on our Marketplace, including full blockchain transaction history for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash, Dash, Litecoin, Zcash, Theta, Hedera Hashgraph, Band Protocol, Polygon, XRP, and Dogecoin.
  • Driving co-development and integration into Google’s robust partner ecosystem, including participating in the Google Cloud Marketplace.
  • Embracing joint go-to-market initiatives with our ecosystem partners where Google Cloud can be the connective tissue between traditional enterprise and blockchain technologies.

As we build out our team, we’re also exploring opportunities in the future to enable Google Cloud customers to make and receive payments using cryptocurrencies.

Finding ways to increase customer loyalty and profitability in a post-COVID world is top of mind for hotels, bars, and restaurants. Unfortunately, many food and beverage services providers struggle to deliver the personalized experiences that keep guests coming back for more. The reality is that most traditional hospitality apps offer only limited insight into guest activities, preferences, underlying operating costs, and other essential details.

We built SevenRooms to help food and beverage operators create truly memorable experiences by managing and personalizing every step of the guest journey. With SevenRooms, restaurants in more than 250 cities globally leverage technology and data to provide unforgettable hospitality experiences with a human touch. That includes seating guests at their favorite table, pouring complimentary glasses of wine from a preferred vintage, offering special menu options, and personalized experiences for special occasions.

Scaling guest experience and retention on Google Cloud

When developing SevenRooms, we needed a technology partner that would enable our small team to securely scale services, automate manual tasks, and accelerate time to market while reducing IT costs. That’s why we started working with Google App Engine—and later became more involved with the Google for Startups Cloud Program.

We soon realized many traditional apps lacked the integrations and capabilities needed to respond to the unique challenges facing food and beverage operators that the Google for Startups Cloud Program services provide. With guidance from experts on the Google Startups Success team, we quickly transformed SevenRooms from a beta restaurant and nightclub reservation and guest management point solution into a full-fledged guest experience and retention platform that analyzes actionable data to automatically build and continuously update detailed guest profiles.

The combination of Google App Engine and other Google Cloud solutions makes everything easier to build and scale. We’re seeing our total cost of ownership (TCO) decline by 10-15%, so we can shift additional resources to R&D to help customers create one-of-a-kind interactions with their guests. And importantly, we can bring new products to market 200-300% faster than competitors.

Because SevenRooms handles a lot of sensitive guest data, stringent security protocols are vital. We store all data on Google Cloud, taking advantage of its highly secure-by-design infrastructure and built-in support for international data privacy laws such as GDPR. We use BigQuery and Looker for data analysis and reporting, and power our NoSQL database with Firestore. We also scale workloads and run Elasticsearch on Google Compute Engine (GCE)—and seamlessly integrate our reservation booking engine with Google Maps and Google Search.

In the future, we’re looking to further market actionable guest data with the help of advanced machine learning (ML) models with TensorFlow and Google Cloud Tensor Processing Units (TPUs). Cloud TPUs and Google Cloud data and analytics services are fully integrated with other Google Cloud offerings, including Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE). By running ML workloads on Cloud TPUs, SevenRooms will benefit from Google Cloud’s leading networking and data analytics technologies such as BigQuery.

We’re also exploring additional Google Cloud solutions such as Anthos to unify the management of infrastructure and applications across on-premises, edge, and multiple public clouds, as well as Google Cloud Run to deploy scalable containerized applications on a fully managed serverless platform. These solutions will enable us to continue to quickly expand our services and offer customers a variety of new benefits.

Building a profitable, sustainable future in food and beverage

Our work with the Google Startups Success team has been instrumental to helping us get where we are today. Their responsiveness is incredible and stands out compared to services from other technology providers. Google Cloud gives us a highly secure infrastructure and next-level training to evolve our infrastructure using solutions such as BigQuery and Backup and Disaster Recovery.

We also work with Google Cloud partner, DoiT International, to further scale and optimize our operations. In particular, DoiT provided expert scripts to short-cut lengthy processes, while actively troubleshooting any issues or questions that came up. DoiT continues to share guidance in key areas for future products and features. They have provided expertise for architecture, infrastructure and cost management. Moving forward, we’re excited to work with Google Cloud and DoiT to handle a growing surge in users which we anticipate in 2023 and beyond.
