With the novel coronavirus COVID-19 sweeping across continents and fatalities climbing every day, it was only a matter of time before countries closed their borders to contain its spread.
In the wake of this decision, travel and tourism, the linchpins of many economies, were among the worst affected.
According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the COVID-19 pandemic caused a 22 percent fall in international tourist arrivals during the first quarter of 2020, and could see an annual decline of between 60 percent and 80 percent when compared with 2019.
The impact on the economy and to livelihoods that are dependent on tourism and hospitality has been significant. Prior to the pandemic, the outlook was quite different. Research by UNWTO in 2018 estimated that India would have 50 million outbound tourists by 2020.
Technology was also set to play a huge part in that growth. A Google Travel study showed that 74 percent of travellers were planning their trips on the Internet, and technologies like AI, IoT and VR were all set to be key trends this year.
Now, as borders slowly reopen and travel restrictions are gradually lifted, technology could once again be the game-changer. Manoj Sharma CTO, Cleartrip.com spoke to YourStory about the industry’s road to recovery and how technology will aid that journey.

Google’s Research and Data Insights Solutions to Power Drug Development and Clinical Research

In order to be successful, research needs to be replicable, so scientists can build on past work and insights. However, an article in Nature warned that as much as 50% of published drug development research could not be reproduced in subsequent trials. As a result, promising drug candidates sometimes led to disappointment, as well as wasted time and money, when key findings could not be replicated.
The shift to cloud computing helps solve this problem because it allows researchers to use open-source tools that work across platforms. As demand for cloud computing rises, our customers have asked us for more ready-made solutions to assure reproducibility of results by their collaborators, regardless of the platform they are using. It integrates seamlessly with some of the industry’s most-used schedulers like Slurm and PBS. It makes it easier than ever to answer bigger questions faster by accessing Google’s fast, powerful hardware like TPUs and GPUs, all for one predictable flat fee for eligible workloads. Healthcare Innovation Hub provides healthcare-specific functionality to help ingest, aggregate, and de-identify any type of healthcare data in its original format. It unlocks cross-modality analysis and collaboration and empowers researchers with harmonization tools to overcome healthcare interoperability issues. Google Cloud Real-World Insights (formerly FDA MyStudies) accelerates and streamlines drug development and clinical trials to address urgent medical challenges with reproducible results.
The solution enables researchers to ask new questions, get answers more quickly, and work more collaboratively–with no wait times or down times. Institutions can scale to more ambitious projects and generate actionable, real-time insights from any data source–all while staying within budget.
Many top research centers have already found it faster and more cost effective to shift from downloading and storing data on their own servers to storing and analyzing data on Google Cloud. Here are some of the real-world projects already yielding breakthroughs:
- Clemson analyzed 8,500 hours of traffic camera feeds with 2.1M vCPUs in three hours to improve evacuation routes for disaster planning.

Telecom operators and communications service providers (CSPs) are elevating customer experiences (CX) across the customer lifecycle. Today’s digital customers’ expectations, needs, usage behaviors and choices are growing and evolving exponentially. Therefore, it is critical to deliver superior and personalized digital customer experiences at each customer lifecycle touchpoint.
To succeed, you need to deliver a dynamic customer experience. Operators are embracing the mantra — next-level CX is the new currency — from onboarding and instant offer provisioning to delivering enhanced self service and supporting subscription renewals, queries and billing actions, and in-session improved experiences. There are commercial benefits to adapting to this paradigm, too, as key customer segments may see added value in enhanced experiences. With 5G, the Ericsson “5G consumer potential” report found that half of early adopters would be willing to pay 32% more for 5G services. Consider the advanced experiences that 5G is able to support, such as:
- Low-latency connectivity and real-time network slicing capabilities, delivering an immersive yet reliable augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) experience. Imagine a soccer match with a rich 360-degree stadium experience from the customer’s choice of location that immerses a fan in the game excitement.
- AI-driven insights enabling operators to predict customer behavior patterns in real time and leveraging available network capacity to provide customers with personalized, just-in-time discounts and offers that can increase ARPU, enhance the customer experience and reduce churn.
- Proactive action, such as instantly optimizing 5G connectivity network slice bandwidth when the quality of service does not meet its promised level. This could include delivering assured, lag-free network performance to an online gamer for next-level gaming intensity or it could be about providing proactive, transparent reimbursements to end customers on the fly, preventing dissatisfaction complaints. Further, 5G with dedicated network slices also enables business applications that exceed an end-to-end SLA essential to a business-to-business (B2B) subscriber.
- Enabling immersive experiences across all services and touchpoints by redefining how consumers interact with offerings from anywhere, whether that’s a smartphone or tablet. What’s more, it’s about feeding intelligence gleaned from those customer interactions into a single view across all ecosystems in real time to gain a full picture of the customer.
How cloud shapes the future of telecom customer experience
Through cloud technology and cloud-native architectures, telecom operators and service providers have the opportunity to deliver such 5G use cases and differentiated offerings. Cloud maximizes the benefits and enables delivery, thereby dramatically improving and reimagining the possibilities for CX. This includes how customers connect, consume and buy services, and it strengthens customer affinity and loyalty.
Cloud and the technologies it maximizes, such as 5G, also present a wide range of innovative monetization opportunities beyond traditional telecom revenue streams and beyond connectivity. Thus, the highest priority for telecom must be on effectively and efficiently harnessing the potential capabilities for launching personalized service offerings for consumer and enterprise at a high velocity. As a result, the new customer engagement model requires agility, responsiveness and reliability to deliver these services across all touchpoints of the customer’s journey.
As such, Optiva and Google Cloud are engaging in a multi-year partnership to help CSPs enable faster time to innovation, flexible 5G monetization and operational cost savings, while driving strong customer experience. Leveraging the Google Cloud platform enabled by Anthos, which supports the deployment and operation of business support system (BSS) applications across public clouds, on-premises data centers and at the network edge, Optiva’s distributed solution deployment offers telecom operators new ways to monetize 5G networks through use cases such as private 5G, IoT and ultra-low latency edge solutions.
Gaining a competitive edge on the new playing field
The solution to these new BSS and monetization requirements lies in the cloud’s unique advantages. For example, to achieve agility, an essential cloud tool, the sandbox, allows operators to accelerate iterations to find optimal solutions. - Real-time offer optimization based on customer insights: On-the-fly optimization of offers based on AI-driven real-time insights to predict usage behavior.
- Handling ultra-low latency service quality with distributed systems: Delivering and charging for ultra-fast services from the edge rather than sending and processing them at a central cloud. This enables new business opportunities by leveraging new private 5G offerings.
- Assured service quality and complaint reduction through automated real-time network configuration: By consistently monitoring the network quality and application and taking corrective actions to match the SLA requirements, we can boost the user experience (e.g., if a user subscribes to an 8K video plan). Thus, if the bandwidth level drops below the agreed-upon resolution level, the service can push an update to the user and potentially offer them a complimentary added data bundle leveraging analytics, churn prediction models and insights.
- Maintaining a real-time single source of truth for customer data: Having a single, distributed repository of real-time updated customer data allows CSPs to deliver customer services more smoothly across all touchpoints.
- Expanding product catalog with a partner ecosystem: Leveraging open APIs to build and expand partner ecosystems to launch new products and services that enable CSPs to expand the services they provide customers and help increase their market relevance.
Cloud momentum accelerates, enabling revolutionized BSS and revenue models
Service providers are forging their paths and investing in and adopting cloud technologies. Cloud empowers operators beyond connectivity and volume offerings on data, text and voice. The technology offers more and unlocks the operator’s ability to meet specific user segment experience requirements in real time and differentiate offerings based on latency, capacity, throughput, speed and device type.

While the shift to digital business and the cloud has been well under way for some years now, organizations today have a new sense of urgency due to COVID-19. Delivering digital transformation is no longer a ‘nice to have’ option, rather, it is an operational imperative. Taking advantage of the infrastructure, platform and solution gains that cloud and microservices architecture provide is a must for brands today.
At Google Cloud, we understand the pressures and challenges organizations of all sizes, across all industries are facing. The pandemic has dramatically impacted global commerce at-large, exposing (for many organizations across multiple sectors) gaps in omnichannel capabilities, business continuity and forecasting plans, not to mention spots in supply chain agility, resilience and responsiveness.
A rapidly evolving consumer-driven commerce landscape has put innovation squarely in the spotlight for supply chain teams all over the world, with the effects of the global pandemic making it increasingly difficult for manufacturers, wholesalers, third party logistics providers and retailers (in particular) to weather the perfect storm of fast-moving consumer trends and a need for ‘always on’ digital innovation.

Thanks to Manhattan’s solution delivered through Google Cloud, in a matter of days, PVH was able to leverage both its distribution centers and vast store network to fulfill its online orders.
“The events of 2020 have accelerated retail and ecommerce operations forward,” said David Herridge, executive vice president of Global Value Chain Technologies for PVH. “With quick, creative thinking and the right partner, we were able to pivot operations, satisfy our customers and prepare for the future.”

IndiaMART: Delivering a Compelling Experience for B2B Buyers and Suppliers with Google Cloud

B2B marketplace IndiaMART aims to help businesses escape the restrictions of traditional supply chains. By providing access to a digital platform optimized for access from desktops and mobile devices, businesses can improve their operations and generate more revenue. IndiaMART’s suite of services includes web storefront, enquiry support, priority listings, premium number services, a lead management system, and payment facilitation.
IndiaMART also provides “behavior-based matchmaking” that identifies the supplier best equipped to meet buyer needs by product or service, category and location. IndiaMART then matches the designated suppliers with the buyers. Finally, IndiaMART operates as a “horizontal marketplace”—enabling suppliers to market to a large number of potential buyers—presenting a compelling offering for both groups.
Amarinder S. Dhaliwal, Chief Product Officer of IndiaMART, says once IndiaMART grew to a certain size, it benefited from a network effect—as more buyers used the marketplace, more suppliers came on board, prompting yet more buyers to access the service and so on. Suppliers becoming buyers and using IndiaMART to purchase products is another growth driver. “There is not just a network effect, but a community effect as well, as a supplier becomes a buyer,” says Dhaliwal. “This increases affinity, and supplier and buyer ‘lock-in’ to the marketplace increases multifold.”
Positioned to address challenges
IndiaMART’s proactive approach positioned the business well to address the challenges presented by new trends and market conditions. Traffic from mobile devices to its business-to-business marketplace has grown from about 30% to 75% over the last four years.
“Mobile traffic has grown at a compound annual growth rate of almost 100% over the same period,” says Dhaliwal. “The proliferation of smartphones and other mobile devices has brought a considerable number of new users onto the internet and these users look for value—the right price from the right supplier,” he adds. “Furthermore, they can connect at any time and from any location they can access a network.”
The mobility revolution also challenged IndiaMART to provide a user interface and experience optimized for devices of various types and sizes—and that incorporated screens much smaller than the screens incorporated in desktops. The organization also had to help users overcome issues such as inconsistent network coverage and quality—particularly in remote areas.
Becoming a mobile-first organization
IndiaMART is responding by becoming, for buyers, a “mobile-first” organization that meets the group’s technical and user experience requirements.
IndiaMART is also adapting its marketplace to support two key trends:
• Buyers using long, conversational sentences to conduct online searches rather than simply typing in keywords
• Non English-users—the vast majority of people in India—stepping up their use of the marketplace
“We expect that, within a few years, we will have more non-English users than English users on IndiaMART,” says Dhaliwal.
IndiaMART is also benefiting from Indian government measures to reform taxation and stimulate the digital economy. “There has been a huge focus on areas such as digital payments and the digitization of identity,” says Dhaliwal. “We have embraced elements of this agenda by implementing a digital payment platform and are continuing to look at ways of providing new digital services to suppliers.
“Meanwhile, the Indian government’s recent implementation of GST allows us to validate suppliers’ businesses and bring more qualified, more verified suppliers on our platform—improving the experience for buyers and suppliers.”
Speed and reliability an issue
IndiaMART had started operations with servers, storage, networking, and associated systems co-located in a data center in the United States. However, as buyers and suppliers increasingly used mobile devices—over occasionally unreliable networks—to access the marketplace, access speeds and reliability became an issue. With most requests traveling between India and the United States, network latency was unacceptably high. Furthermore, business growth meant IndiaMART needed an environment that could scale to meet demand for the next five to 10 years.
IndiaMART opted for a multi-cloud architecture and established criteria for cloud providers to win its business. “We required an infrastructure that could scale and meet our demand for fast response time without putting our business at risk,” says Dhaliwal. “This meant taking a phased rather than one-shot approach to the migration. We also needed to minimize any wasteful duplication of infrastructure and reduce latency. In addition, as we scaled, we needed to protect our systems, transactions and information, including the details of buyers and suppliers.”
Google Cloud team’s high-quality support
The organization performed proof of concept with the three largest multinational cloud services providers and found Google Cloud was best positioned to act as the cornerstone of its multi-cloud architecture. “The Google Cloud team gave us considerable support in helping us run a proof of concept of its services,” says Dhaliwal.
“The proof of concept also illustrated that Google Cloud was superior to the other cloud services we looked at.
“We could run our marketplace across multiple geo-locations under a single IP address, avoiding duplication, and users in India could connect to Google Cloud via the closest access point, with their traffic passing quickly across the Google network.
“In addition, Google Cloud’s load balancing service would enable encryption between load balancing layers and back ends to ensure security, while all communication would move across Google’s own protected network.”
Being one of India’s early users of G Suite, the organization was also familiar with Google Cloud applications and services.
IndiaMART then opted to work with the Google Cloud team and a certified partner on a step-by-step implementation that minimized any risk of disruption.
Deep engagement from Google
“We engaged very deeply with both Google and the partner to complete this migration,” says Dhaliwal. “The Google team worked very hard to understand our requirements and provide a solution that catered to our needs and could be deployed in a phased manner.” The team ran workshops and technical sessions with IndiaMART and, at a Google Summit, connected the marketplace provider to Google experts in databases and infrastructure.
“These discussions really helped us formulate a strategy moving forward,” says Dhaliwal.
Based on input from Google and its own evaluation, IndiaMART developed an architecture comprising virtual machine instances delivered through Compute Engine, Google Cloud’s infrastructure-as-a-service offering; Cloud Load Balancing to support cloud resources distributed across multiple locations; Cloud Pub/Sub to provide enterprise messaging; and Cloud Dataflow to transform and enrich data.
Cloud Armor works with Cloud Load Balancing to defend against distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks; and Geocoding API helps the organization convert geographic coordinates into readable addresses and vice versa. Cloud AutoML allows IndiaMART to train machine learning models to meet its requirements. With Geocoding API, IndiaMART can matchmake buyers and suppliers based on location—providing a high quality experience for both parties. Finally, AutoML Translation allows the organization to create a custom machine learning model that converts product names from English into Hindi and other languages, effectively opening up new markets for buyers and suppliers.
Phase one complete
IndiaMART has completed phase one of the migration that involved moving its web properties across to Google Cloud. The organization is now experimenting with moving its APIs and databases to the service and anticipates completing the exercise over the coming year.
Average page load time down
The initial phase of the project has already delivered considerable benefits to IndiaMART. The organization has cut average page loading time from five seconds to three seconds, and Dhaliwal attributes close to one second of that reduction to the move to Google Cloud. “With Google Cloud, buyers and suppliers can access our marketplace much faster than previously,” says Dhaliwal. “This impacts positively on engagement, time spent on our marketplace, and the user’s entire journey with us.”
DDoS attack repelled
Google Cloud’s security features have already passed their first test. As IndiaMART undertook stage one of the migration, the business experienced a DDoS attack that generated request loads more than 400 times greater than normal. “Because we were on Google Cloud infrastructure, we could develop a solution to combat this severe DDoS attack,” says Sunil Parolia, Sr. VP at IndiaMART. “From a security perspective, this really justified our decision to go with Google Cloud.”
Google Cloud is also helping deliver the availability required by IndiaMART and the scalability to support growing demand. “As the number of people in India who access the internet grows from about 500 million to 700-800 million over the next couple of years, we will continue to build our traffic and be the dominant business-to-business platform,” says Dhaliwal. “On the supplier side, we expect to see more and more businesses come onto our marketplace—ranging from small-to-medium businesses up to larger brands. Google Cloud will enable us to accommodate this traffic without compromising the experience we provide.”
How Eventrac and Workflows Integration Helps Implement Hybrid Architecture in Google Cloud

I previously talked about Eventarc for choreographed (event-driven) Cloud Run services and introduced Workflows for orchestrated services.
Eventarc and Workflows are very useful in strictly choreographed or orchestrated architectures. However, you sometimes need a hybrid architecture that combines choreography and orchestration.
For example, imagine a use case where a message to a Pub/Sub topic triggers an automated infrastructure workflow or where a file upload to a Cloud Storage bucket triggers an image processing workflow. In these use cases, the trigger is an event but the actual work is done as an orchestrated workflow.
How do you implement these hybrid architectures in Google Cloud? The answer lies in Eventarc and Workflows integration.
Eventarc triggers
To recap, an Eventarc trigger enables you to read events from Google Cloud sources via Audit Logs and custom sources via Pub/Sub and direct them to Cloud Run services:

One limitation of Eventarc is that it currently only supports Cloud Run as targets. This will change in the future with more supported event targets. It’d be nice to have a future Eventarc trigger to route events from different sources to Workflows directly.
In absence of such a Workflows enabled trigger today, you need to do a little bit of work to connect Eventarc to Workflows. Specifically, you need to use a Cloud Run service as a proxy in the middle to execute the workflow.
Let’s take a look at a couple of concrete examples.
Eventarc Pub/Sub + Workflows integration
In the first example, imagine you want a Pub/Sub message to trigger a workflow.
Define and deploy a workflow
First, define a workflow that you want to execute. Here’s a sample workflows.yaml that simply decodes and logs the Pub/Sub message body:

Next, you need a Cloud Run service to execute this workflow. Workflows has an execution API and client libraries that you can use for your favorite language. Here’s an example of the execution code from a Node app.js file. It simply passes the received HTTP request headers and body to the workflow and executes it:

With Cloud Run and Workflows connected, the next step is to connect a Pub/Sub topic to the Cloud Run service by creating an Eventarc Pub/Sub trigger:
gcloud eventarc triggers create ${SERVICE_NAME} \--destination-run-service=${SERVICE_NAME} \--destination-run-region=${REGION} \--location=${REGION} \--event-filters="type=google.cloud.pubsub.topic.v1.messagePublished"
This creates a Pub/Sub topic under the covers that you can access with:
export TOPIC_ID=$(basename $(gcloud eventarc triggers describe ${SERVICE_NAME} --format='value(transport.pubsub.topic)'))
Trigger the workflow
Now that all the wiring is done, you can trigger the workflow by simply sending a Pub/Sub message to the topic created by Eventarc:
gcloud pubsub topics publish ${TOPIC_ID} --message="Hello there"
In a few seconds, you should see the message in Workflows logs, confirming that the Pub/Sub message triggered the execution of the workflow:

Eventarc Audit Log-Storage + Workflows integration
In the second example, imagine you want a file creation event in a Cloud Storage bucket to trigger a workflow. The steps are similar to the Pub/Sub example with a few differences.
Define and deploy a workflow
As an example, you can use this workflow.yaml that logs the bucket and file names:
main:params: [args]steps:...- log:call: sys.logargs:text: ${"Workflows received event from bucket " + bucket + " for file " + file}severity: INFO
Deploy a Cloud Run service to execute the workflow
In the Cloud Run service, you read the CloudEvent from Eventarc and extract the bucket and file name in app.js using the CloudEvent SDK and the Google Event library:

Executing the workflow is similar to the Pub/Sub example, except you don’t pass in the whole HTTP request but rather just the bucket and file name to the workflow:
const execResponse = await client.createExecution({parent: client.workflowPath(GOOGLE_CLOUD_PROJECT, WORKFLOW_REGION, WORKFLOW_NAME),execution: {argument: JSON.stringify({bucket: bucket, file: file})}});
Connect Cloud Storage events to the Cloud Run service
To connect Cloud Storage events to the Cloud Run service, create an Eventarc Audit Logs trigger with the service and method names for Cloud Storage:
gcloud eventarc triggers create ${SERVICE_NAME} \--destination-run-service=${SERVICE_NAME} \--destination-run-region=${REGION} \--location=${REGION} \--event-filters="type=google.cloud.audit.log.v1.written" \--event-filters="serviceName=storage.googleapis.com" \--event-filters="methodName=storage.objects.create" \--service-account=${PROJECT_NUMBER}-compute@developer.gserviceaccount.com
Trigger the workflow
Finally, you can trigger the workflow by creating and uploading a file to the bucket:
echo "Hello World" > random.txtgsutil cp random.txt gs://${BUCKET}/random.txt
In a few seconds, you should see the workflow log the bucket and object name.
Conclusion
In this blog post, I showed you how to trigger a workflow with two different event types from Eventarc. It’s certainly possible to do the opposite, namely, trigger a Cloud Run service via Eventarc with a Pub/Sub message (see connector_publish_pubsub.workflows.yaml) from Workflows or a file upload to a bucket from Workflows.
