Fairygodboss, the largest career community for women, relies on Google Cloud to process, store, and analyse data based on the user-driven events on their site. Learn how this collab allows for better job recommendations and opportunities for women.

May is Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month — a time for us to come together to celebrate and remember the important people and history of Asian and Pacific Island heritage. This feature highlights founder Georgene Huang and how her startup Fairygodboss uses easy to use Google Cloud tools to grow and innovate. 

Coming from a male-dominated industry like Wall Street, I never thought much about my gender. I was so focused on work that I didn’t feel like I could focus on my identity as a woman of color. That all changed when I found myself thrust into the job market while two months pregnant.

Traditionally, job-seeking sites are built by – and geared towards – men and their professional needs. There was no recruiting site that broke down what candidates who identify as women might expect from a company, let alone women of color like myself. I founded Fairygodboss to create a space where women can crowdsource information about opportunities and employers in order to make informed career decisions.

Fair•y•god•boss (noun): A person who elevates women at work.

Fairygodboss is the largest career community for women. In researching potential employers, I had many questions surrounding company culture, maternity leave, and women in leadership positions. While sites like Glassdoor provide high-level details for job seekers, I wanted more concrete examples and data than general salary information and anecdotes about work-life balance. 

Fairygodboss began as a job review site geared towards women, but has expanded significantly since our initial launch. In addition to providing free resources like career connections, job listings, virtual recruiting events, community advice, and real research on how companies treat women, we also proactively help companies improve gender diversity. Fairygodboss partners with hundreds of top employers to create a 360-degree recruiting and employer branding program designed to drive female applicants to job postings by showcasing a company’s track record of women in leadership within a company, and their diversity investments.

Google Cloud + Fairygodboss: Data defined 

At our core, Fairygodboss is a data-driven company, and we rely on Google Cloud to help us process, store, and analyze user-driven events occurring on the site. As a highly scalable, serverless, and cost-effective data warehousing solution, BigQuery collect millions of events each day, helping us identify where traffic is coming from (and where it goes next), and it produces actionable insights to provide better recommendations, information, and opportunities for women visiting our platform. 

After seamlessly connecting our BigQuery data to Data Studio, we have been able to visualize and make sense of all the data we receive on our platform. Unlike some other data visualization tools, Data Studio allows us to analyze data in real time. With tools like BigQuery, we are now able to identify trends and gain a deep understanding for how our users interact with our site. 

Google for Startups Accelerator: Women Founders 

In order to provide more accurate job recommendations for our users, the Fairygodboss team wanted to build a machine learning prototype to classify our users and jobs into categories to facilitate more effective matching. So we applied for the Google for Startups Accelerator: Women Founders, a three-month digital accelerator program for high-potential Seed to Series A tech startups based in the U.S. and Canada. Along with tailored mentorship and product support from Googlers and industry experts, the Google for Startups Accelerator provided $100K in Google Cloud credits to scale our businesses. The mentorship we received from the Google Cloud technical experts as part of the Accelerator – special shout out to Peter Novig! – empowered us to integrate Cloud AutoML into our systems and ultimately curate more accurate job suggestions for our users.  

Not only did the Google for Startups Accelerator program help to achieve our business goals for the year, it was also extremely beneficial to be connected with a cohort of other women founders of color. While we are all building different kinds of businesses across different industries, the guidance around fundraising, scaling teams, and coping with the struggles of being a founder rang true for all of us. 

Advancing the community

It can be daunting to launch your own business – and even more so as an AAPI woman. Throughout my career, I am certain I have experienced unconscious bias around my race. Specifically, there have likely been “model minority” stereotypes about my demeanor and math abilities, assumptions that I may be mild-mannered or agreeable. While frustrating, these unfair tropes actually inspired me to see myself beyond others’ perceptions. Why be either analytical or creative, meek or brash, inspiring or agreeable? It’s the ors of life that prevent us from seeing ourselves as truly multi-dimensional individuals. I aspired to be more instead of or, and want my company to be as well. 

As an inclusion-focused business, it is extremely important that Fairygodboss mindfully engage with all underrepresented groups. Diversity can be sliced in many different ways, and these intersections lead to great opportunities for change. We have a team of volunteer ‘culture wizards’ at work that provide educational resources and videos for those wanting to learn more about different cultures and identities from members of under-represented groups. We also practice what we preach at Fairygodboss by prioritizing diverse slates and diversity in our own hiring process. We aim for the talent we hire to be representative of the diverse communities we support. It is imperative to take an intentional approach to hiring diverse talent, as it falls on all employers to promote equity and inclusion—there are always ways in which we can all improve. Fairygodboss looks forward to evolving with Google Cloud in 2021 and beyond as we work together to foster inclusive teams around the world.

Analytics Hub for Secure Data Sharing and Analytics Unlocks True Data Value and Insights

Google Cloud announces a new fully managed service, Analytics Hub to help businesses unlock real value of data sharing for insights and driving business value. The Analytics Hub is built to offer businesses a rich data ecosystem with analytics-ready datasets, better control and monitoring on the data usage, self-service way to access valuable and trusted data assets, and data assets monetization without the overhead of building and managing the infrastructure. The new service offering will be available for preview in Q3. Learn more.

Customers tell us that sharing and exchanging data with other organizations is a critical element of their analytics strategy, but it’s hamstrung by unreliable data and processes, and only getting harder with security threats and privacy regulations on the rise. 

Furthermore, traditional data sharing techniques use batch data pipelines that are expensive to run, create late arriving data, and can break with any changes to the source data. They also create multiple copies of data, which brings unnecessary costs and can bypass data governance processes. These techniques do not offer features for data monetization, such as managing subscriptions and entitlements. Altogether, these challenges mean that organizations are unable to realize the full potential of transforming their business with shared data.

To address these limitations, we are introducing Analytics Hub, a new fully managed service, available in Q3, in preview, that helps you unlock the value of data sharing, leading to new insights and increased business value. With Analytics Hub you get:

  • A rich data ecosystem by publishing and subscribing to analytics-ready datasets. 
  • Control and monitoring over how your data is being used, because data is shared in one place.
  • A self-service way to access valuable and trusted data assets, including data provided by Google. For example, a unique dataset from Google Search Trends will be available, that you can query and combine with your own data.
  • An easy way to monetize your data assets without the overhead of building and managing the infrastructure. 

Built on a decade of cross-organizational sharing

While Analytics Hub is a new service, it builds on BigQuery, Google’s petabyte-scale, serverless cloud data warehouse. BigQuery’s unique architecture provides separation between compute and storage, enabling data publishers to share data with as many subscribers as you want without having to make multiple copies of your data. With BigQuery, there are no servers to deploy or manage, which means that data consumers get immediate value from shared data. Data can be provided and consumed in real-time using the streaming capabilities of BigQuery and you can leverage the built in machine learning, geospatial, and natural language capabilities of BigQuery or take advantage of the native business intelligence support with tools like LookerGoogle Sheets, and Data Studio.

BigQuery has had cross-organizational, in-place data sharing capabilities since it was introduced in 2010. We took a look at usage metrics in BigQuery and found that over a 7 day period in April, we had over 3,000 different organizations sharing over 200 petabytes of data. These numbers don’t include data sharing between departments within the same organization.

As you can see, data sharing in BigQuery is already popular. But we want to make it easier and even more scalable.

Raising the bar on data sharing 

To make data sharing easier and more scalable in BigQuery, Analytics Hub introduces the  concepts of shared datasets and exchanges. As a data publisher, you create shared datasets that contain the views of data that you want to deliver to your subscribers. Next, you create exchanges, which are used to organize and secure shared datasets. By default, exchanges are completely private, which means that only the users and groups that you give access to can view or subscribe to the data. You can also create internal exchanges or leverage public exchanges provided by Google. Finally, you publish shared datasets into an exchange to make them available to subscribers. 

Data subscribers search through the datasets that are available across all exchanges for which they have access and subscribe to relevant datasets. This creates a linked dataset in their project that they can query and join with their own data. Subscribers pay for the queries that they run against the data while the publisher pays for the storage of the data. Data providers can add new data, new tables, or new columns to the shared dataset and these will be immediately available to subscribers. In addition, the publisher can track subscribers, disable subscriptions, and see aggregated usage information for the shared data. 

Analytics Hub makes it easy for you to publish, discover, and subscribe to valuable datasets that you can combine with your own data to derive unique insights. Here are some types of data that will be available through Analytics Hub:

  • Public datasets: Easy access to the existing repository of over 200 public datasets, including data about weather and climate, cryptocurrency, healthcare and life sciences, and transportation. 
  • Google datasets: Unique, freely-available datasets from Google. One example of this is the COVID-19 community mobility dataset. Another example is the forthcoming Google Trends dataset, which will provide the top 25 search terms and top 25 rising search terms over a 5 year window in 210 distinct locations in the US. Trends data can be used by everyone in the organization to gain insights into what customers care about.
  • Commercial (paid for) datasets: We are working with leading commercial data providers to bring their data products to Analytics Hub. If you are interested in delivering your data via Analytics Hub, we’re also introducing Data Gravity, an initiative that provides storage benefits and new distribution paths for data published through Analytics Hub. 
  • Internal datasets: We know that data sharing can be challenging in larger organizations. Analytics Hub can be used for internal data, for example, to share standardized customer demographics with your sales engineering and data science teams.

Next steps for Analytics Hub

This is just the beginning for Analytics Hub. As we get to preview and general availability, we will be adding additional capabilities, including workflows for publishing and subscribing, publishing analytics assets (Looker Blocks, Data Studio reports, Connected Google Sheets) along with the shared data, the ability for data publishers to specify query restrictions on the usage of their data, and making it easy for data publishers to create sandbox environments for subscribers to work with their data, even if they are not yet on Google Cloud. We will provide features in Analytics Hub for monetization of data, including managing subscriptions, data entitlements, and billing.

Data Cloud Skills to Pick Up in 2022: Google Experts Recommended

Data drive decisions for companies to be successful and customer focused. Experts at Google suggest specializing in data cloud skills for data practitioners to stay ahead of the trends and leverage technologies that support their data journeys.

It’s 2022 and nanosatellites, NFTs, and autonomous cars that deliver your pizza are in full force. In a world where people rely on simple technology to untangle complex problems, companies must deliver simple experiences to be successful in today’s landscape. For many cloud providers this means enabling tightly integrated data offerings that simplify the data delivery process without losing sight of the sophisticated needs of the modern data consumer. 

But while the name of the game is helping companies reach informed decisions from their data simpler and faster, what about the data practitioners – data analysts, data engineers, database administrators, developers, etc – who use these cloud data tools and technologies everyday? To proactively stay ahead of data cloud market trends in 2022 should data practitioners invest their time in specializing their data cloud skill sets (e.g. go deep in, say, data pipelining skills) or instead invest their time generalizing their data cloud skill sets (e.g. growing proficiencies in a mix of data analytics, databases, AI/ML, and more domains)? 

Skill deep or wide with data – that is the question

For Abdul Razack, VP, Solutions Engineering, Technology Solutions and Strategy at Google Cloud, the answer is a bit of both. 

“Data practitioners need to be broad in terms of their technology skills, but specialized with respect to the domain or domains in which they apply them. The reason why is because many things that used to be separate skill sets are now converging – like business analytics, streaming, machine learning, data pipelines, and data warehousing. Data practitioners need to be able to implement end-to-end workflows that solve specific business problems using skills from each category.”

It’s true, thousands of customers are choosing Google’s data cloud because it offers a unified and open approach to cloud that enables their practitioners to break down silos, begin and end projects without leaving the data platform, and innovate faster across their organization. 

The data practitioners who mirror Google data cloud’s frame of mind of being smart and agile across data domains in their skilling and learning will reap the benefits of solving more nuanced problems – building out internet-scale applications, fine tuning smart processes with analytics and AI, constructing data meshes that make product building simple, etc – at a larger scale than they would if they specialized in just one or two areas alone.

There’s only so much you can learn and skills you can develop when you’re using limited tools. Growing data proficiencies across the board is made a lot easier when you’re using a data platform like BigQuery to address all these needs. BigQuery eliminates the choices you have to make – for instance you don’t have to choose between streaming data and data at rest, batch and realtime, or business intelligence and data science. This freedom gives data professionals a huge advantage when they’re building their skill sets and taking on more complex projects.” -Abdul Razack – VP, Solutions Engineering, Technology Solutions and Strategy, Google Cloud

Knowing your value is half the battle when upskilling

While some experts think technology is the limiting factor of whether or not you can even go wide or go deep in the first place, others like Google Cloud’s Head of Data and Analytics Bruno Aziza purport that it also depends on who you are, who you wish to be, and what investments your company is making to ensure you can become that person. 

“If you wish to set yourself up to be a Chief Data Officer, then you’ll want to understand how technologies fit together across your data estate first” said Aziza. “Only after you feel like you’re the go-to ‘data person’ can you then decide which part of the technology stack you want to double-down on.”

But technology isn’t everything. Aziza notes, “Make sure you focus on the  business impact that your data work provides.  You want to spend as much time as you can with your business counterparts to understand their business goals and challenges. The Harvard Business Review provides great guidance on how to succeed as a Chief Data Officer.”

Even if you don’t have your sights set on a C-suite role, both Aziza and Razack contend that the number one skill data practitioners should tackle in 2022 is actually a broad and perhaps abstract one: develop and exercise the curiosity to solve problems with a data-driven strategy. 

That is, today’s data practitioners should always be interested in educating themselves in the industry and continually upskilling in something. And their employers should also be invested in helping practitioners develop those interests, most likely through exposure to learning materials, engaging in career conversations, subsidized courses, or incentives attached to pursuing a new certification or skill.  

“Every industry is going through a digital transformation and the ability to identify what data to collect, how to prepare the data, and how to derive insights from it is critical. Therefore, the ability to find business challenges and formulate a data-driven approach to address those problems is the most important skill to have.” Abdul Razack – VP, Solutions Engineering, Technology Solutions and Strategy, Google Cloud.

Take the example of the “Data Mesh” I just wrote about in VentureBeat.  You’ll find 3 types of attitudes towards this new concept. There are Disciples who encourage continued learning only from the source – like the author of a new book or the creator of a theory. There are Distractors who tell you that new skills, trends, and technologies are fake news. And there are Distorters like vendors who will sell you one easy fix solution. But it’s the data practitioner who needs to proceed with caution when interacting with all three types  and forge their own path to discovering the truth when they’re learning and building skills. And for better or worse, this comes with trial and error, experimentation, and an eagerness to grow relative to where they began.”

BigQuery Omni – BigQuery Omni is a flexible, multi-cloud analytics solution powered by Anthos that lets you cost-effectively access and securely analyze data across Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Azure, without leaving the BigQuery user interface (UI). Using standard SQL and familiar BigQuery APIs, you can break down data silos and gain critical business insights from a single pane of glass. 

Data QnA: Data QnA enables self-service analytics for business users on BigQuery data as well as federated data from Cloud Storage, Bigtable, Cloud SQL, or Google Drive. It uses Dialogflow and enables users to formulate free-form text analytical questions, with auto-suggested entities while users type a question.

Connected Sheets -The native integration between Sheets and BigQuery makes it possible for all business stakeholders, who are already quite familiar with spreadsheet tools, to get their own up-to-date insights at any time.

Geospatial data – BigQuery offers accurate and scalable geospatial analysis with geography data types. It supports core GIS functions – measurements, transforms, constructors, and more – using standard SQL.

How does it work?

Here’s how it works: You ingest your own data into BigQuery or use data from the public datasets. Storage and compute are decoupled and can scale independently on demand. This offers immense flexibility and cost control for your business as you don’t need to keep expensive compute resources up and running all the time. As a result, BigQuery is much more cost-effective than traditional node-based cloud data warehouse solutions or on-premises systems. BigQuery also provides automatic backup and restore of your data. 

You can ingest data into BigQuery in batches or stream real-time data from web, IoT, or mobile devices via Pub/Sub. You can also use Data Transfer Service to ingest data from other clouds, on-premises systems or third-party services. BigQuery also supports ODBC and JDBC drivers to connect with existing tools and infrastructure. 

Interacting with BigQuery to load data, run queries, or create ML models can be done in three different ways. You can use the UI in the Cloud Console, the BigQuery command-line tool, or the API via client libraries available in several languages.

When it comes time to visualize your data, BigQuery integrates with Looker as well as several other business intelligence tools across the Google partner ecosystem.

What about security?

BigQuery offers built-in data protection at scale. It provides security and governance tools to efficiently govern data and democratize insights within your organization. 

  • Within BigQuery, users can assign dataset-level and project-level permissions to help govern data access. Secure data sharing ensures you can collaborate and operate your business with trust.
  • Data is automatically encrypted both while in transit and at rest, ensuring that your data is protected from intrusions, theft, and attacks. 
  • Cloud DLP helps you discover and classify sensitive data assets.
  • Cloud IAM provides access control and visibility into security policies.
  • Data Catalog helps you discover and manage data. 

How much does it cost?

The BigQuery sandbox lets you explore BigQuery capabilities at no cost and confirm that BigQuery fits your needs. With BigQuery you get predictable price-performance: you pay for storing and querying data, and for streaming inserts. Loading and exporting data are free of charge. Storage costs are based on the amount of data stored, and have two rates based on how often the data is changing. Query costs can be either:

  • On-demand – you are charged per query by the amount of data processed
  • Flat-rate – if you prefer to purchase dedicated resources 

You can start with the pay-as-you-go, on-demand option and later move to flat-rate if that better suits your usage. Or, start with flat-rate, get a better understanding of your usage and move to the pay-as-you-go models for additional workloads.

UK-based Ocado uses machine learning to classify customer emails to fast-track urgent cases. It also discovered that 7% of its emails didn't require a response at all, which means call center representatives now have more time to devote to higher priority messages.

In the United Kingdom, the popularity of online grocery shopping is expected to surge from about 6% of the market today to 9% by 2021, according to market research firm Mintel. One of the pioneers of online-only grocery retailing is Ocado, based in Hatfield, Hertfordshire in the U.K. Since starting commercial deliveries in 2002, the company has grown to 600,000 active customers, 260,000 weekly orders, and £1.39 billion in annual revenue.

Ocado takes supermarket trips out of the equation by enabling shoppers to purchase items online through its convenient web and mobile applications. Items are then picked and packed in automated warehouses and shipped directly to customers in a one-hour time slot of their choosing. Ocado’s delivery punctuality is 95%, order accuracy is 99%, and its service footprint now reaches more than 70% of the U.K. population.

The company achieved its success by building in-house almost all the technology and automation that powers its end-to-end e-commerce, fulfillment, and logistics platform. Ocado also developed a new platform, the Ocado Smart Platform (OSP), which offers large brick-and-mortar grocery retailers around the world access to a best-in-class solution for online grocery.

Democratizing machine learning

The shopping journey for online grocery retailing differs significantly from other e-businesses. Customers often buy dozens of products at once, a single household may have multiple buyers using multiple devices, and product shelf life may only be a couple of days.

“We often say that having built an end-to-end platform that can do online grocery scalably and profitably, we can do other forms of online retail; but the reverse does not necessarily follow,” says Paul Clarke, Chief Technology Officer at Ocado. “Google Cloud Platform gives us the flexibility and performance to tackle the large and complex data challenges unique to our business.”

The Ocado business model takes advantage of consumers’ shifting preferences and the links between digital technology and shopping experiences.

The company has been building machine learning into its systems for over five years. Until recently, Ocado machine learning applications required specialist data scientists, typically with PhDs in machine learning, who would build these solutions from the ground up. It also required the specialist who set up the system and costly on-premises infrastructure to train and run these systems.

However, working with Google as a private alpha testing site for Google Cloud Machine Learning Engine accelerated its adoption of artificial intelligence (AI).

“We’ve been talking about how the cloud could democratize AI for some time,” says Paul. “Google Cloud Machine Learning Engine gives us the agility we need. Our developers were able to try out TensorFlow and see firsthand the benefits of machine learning in the cloud.”

TensorFlow is an open source software library for machine learning developed by the Google Brain team. Ocado developers, engineers, and data scientists now use TensorFlow for many of their machine learning projects. They deploy the models they build on Google Cloud Machine Learning Engine, which lets them train models faster across servers, desktop computers, and mobile devices through a single application program interface (API). Additionally, Google Cloud Machine Learning Engine integrates easily with the other Google Cloud Platform products used widely at Ocado.

What do customers really want?

One of the first TensorFlow models Ocado created was a machine learning algorithm that tags and categorizes customer emails and then prioritizes them for response.

The contact center receives thousands of emails each day and Ocado wanted to automate determining which ones needed to be answered immediately and which ones could wait.

For example, a first-time customer expressing their delight in using Ocado doesn’t need to be responded to with the same urgency as a customer who is missing an item from their order or who won’t be home to receive the delivery.

“We get a lot of emails from customers saying, ‘Our service was great,’ or ‘The driver was very courteous,'” says James Donkin, General Manager, Ocado. “But when issues like weather or road conditions potentially affect delivery, we often get surges of urgent questions. Enabling agents to respond without having to sort through less-urgent emails improves Ocado’s responsiveness and customer service.”

Using Google Cloud Machine Learning Engine, TensorFlow, and a large data set culled from several years’ worth of manually categorized customer emails, Ocado experimented on which kind of neural network architecture would best prioritize emails. After testing its models, Ocado implemented the highest-performing one and has been able to respond to urgent messages four times faster. The company also discovered that 7% of its emails don’t require a response at all, which means call center representatives now have more time to devote to higher priority messages.

“Without Google Cloud Machine Learning Engine, it would have been a lot harder to succeed on a project like email classification,” says Roland Plaszowski, who has recently managed several big data projects and initiatives at Ocado.

“Even if we invested significantly in infrastructure, it would be difficult to manage because of the computational intensity. It’s challenging and expensive to run machine learning projects at the same time without infrastructure that you can scale easily.”

Ocado also uses machine learning to predict customer behavior and improve experiences. By analyzing order data, Ocado makes shopping as frictionless as possible. For example, the ordering system can pre-populate customers’ shopping carts with items they are most likely to purchase, remind customers about items they may have forgotten, and notify them of multi-buy offers they haven’t completed, for example, only buying one of a buy one, get one free offer. Based on machine learning from previous purchase data, the Ocado system can also offer new products that are likely to delight customers.

“You will regularly see items that are more personally relevant to you instead of items that are being promoted more generally,” says James. “I’m a vegetarian, so I’m offered specials for vegetarian products that I normally buy and new ones that I’ve never bought. I’m also less likely to see things that I’m not interested in.”

Machines and machine learning

Within the Internet of Things (IoT), Ocado is looking to enhance its warehouse robots with machine learning. An integral part of the OSP, thousands of robots continually stream data into Google Cloud Storage and Google BigQuery.

Ocado data scientists apply machine learning to create a type of swarm intelligence that enables warehouse robots to work cooperatively to achieve a common goal. Projects include modules to search robot telemetry data, such as whether a battery pack is operating within standard tolerances or whether firmware has been successfully loaded, and use it to optimize maintenance schedules or detect patterns in wear and tear.

“Another challenge we’re looking at is how to embed machine learning directly into robots so they become smarter in terms of self-testing, exception handling, and error recovery,” says Paul. “This is a challenging combination of IoT, data analytics, and machine learning that we believe Google BigQuery and Google Cloud Machine Learning are particularly well suited to helping Ocado achieve.”

Scaling for new business

Scalability is also a major reason behind some of Ocado’s cloud initiatives, including the migration of all its on-premises data to the cloud. Ocado wanted to improve customer experiences, empower business teams with greater insight, and reduce IT overhead, so it consolidated onto Google Cloud Platform.

“The old databases just weren’t fast enough,” says Paul. “We needed a solution that could scale with the amount of data we generate and how we use it. Google Cloud Storage and Google BigQuery now provide the backbone, from a data point of view, for the Ocado Smart Platform.”

Ocado estimates its business, product, and transaction data is approaching two petabytes. Combining customer and supply chain data helps both internal Ocado operations and the company’s ambitions to commercialize OSP.

“When compared with other options for expansion internationally, selling OSP as a managed service lets us turn companies that could have been competitors into customers,” says Paul. “We want to build OSP once and then turn it on for multiple business-to-business customers.”

Each time Ocado adds a new hosting customer to OSP, it will launch a customized instance to fit that customer’s requirements. The capacity and performance of each new OSP instance must be able to scale quickly as the backend platform for established retailers with large numbers of products, customers, and transactions.

Ocado’s first OSP customer, Morrisons, is already benefiting from this first-of-a kind solution. Morrisons is one of the UK’s four largest supermarkets and uses OSP to power its online retail business. Using Google Cloud Platform, Ocado has stored, processed, and analyzed terabytes of Morrisons’ data using a dedicated data lake and Google BigQuery.

In addition to using Google Cloud Platform for OSP, Ocado also adopted it for its own online grocery retail business operation. Ocado originally used the Apache Spark and Apache Hadoop open-source frameworks on Google Compute Engine for its data platform. Moving to Google BigQuery frees Ocado business analysts from the complex query setup and workflows associated with Spark and Hadoop. Plus, it lets Ocado share data analytics with suppliers and partners.

Google BigQuery is well integrated with TensorFlow on Google Cloud Machine Learning Engine and Google Cloud Dataproc, the Apache Spark and Apache Hadoop service that lets Ocado use open source data tools for batch processing, querying, streaming, and machine learning. Google Cloud Dataflow and Google Cloud Dataproc handle cluster management, and provide an easy-to-use framework so developers can spend less time and money on administration and more time on delivering valuable business features.

Switching from Hadoop to Google BigQuery revealed a series of cost and performance improvements. For example, Ocado no longer needed to decide how many instances to bring up in a cluster or wait for the instances to spin up. Google handled everything.

“We simply ran our queries and paid for the resources that we use,” adds Roland. “One big win with Google BigQuery is we don’t have to do maintenance. Best of all, we saw Google BigQuery outperform our Hadoop cluster by over 80 times on our largest dataset, and for only two-thirds the cost.”
