Given the May 1 deadline for students to enroll, colleges and universities have been carefully watching the numbers of students who put down deposits and commit to a school. Like nearly every other sector in the U.S., colleges and universities have been hit hard by the pandemic and economic downturn, making enrollment numbers more important than ever to maintain financial health and meet student body goals. Technology and AI-based models are providing a way for institutions to manage their admissions data efficiently and cost-effectively.

For example, an admissions officer may want to offset drops in international or out-of-state enrollment by attracting local talent so they can achieve their target class profile. Additionally, institutions have sought to increase the availability and access of higher ed and are intentionally recruiting more low-income and underrepresented populations. New technologies allow admissions officers to have a stronger grasp of the incoming class’ details. With the press of a button, users can switch between overall, in-state, out-of-state, and international enrollment figures. The “How Do Regions Compare to Last Year” tile lets users view the percentage of change and the total number of candidates by region, comparing 2020 and 2021 side-by-side. With access to data, regional recruiters can focus on individual candidates and develop a plan to change the numbers.

An innovative enrollment strategy at MSU

Michigan State University was looking to improve how they managed the recruiting process. They implemented an enrollment strategy that saw their out-of-state enrollment increase by over 20% and generate $5M in additional net tuition revenue in a single year. “We knew we needed better real-time and predictive insights about our enrollment pipeline, and we understood the value of bringing in external data on prospects, but we couldn’t do that by ourselves. 

The solution really helped us be innovative with our analytics and improve our enrollment outcomes,” said someone close to the project at Michigan State University.

Data-driven insights support informed enrollment decisions

Embracing the power of 3D to super-charge ecommerce 

It’s inarguable: e-commerce is on the rise. More people than ever before are shopping online for furniture, kitchen cabinets, decking, and other large-scale configurable products. 

Customers who design with a retailer, usually buy from them. When shoppers visit stores and showrooms, they find inspiration in merchandised scenes that illustrate how products like sofas, chairs, rugs and lamps work together to accomplish a look. Skilled sales people make suggestions and offer advice on how to put pieces together. They may even work up a quick floor plan to show how multiple items work together in a room. In store, the inspiration phase is intimately tied to consideration and, ultimately, to driving transactions.

By contrast, online shoppers typically start home projects by seeking inspiration and ideas from Pinterest, Instagram and unbranded online image searches. Once they have formed their style preferences, shoppers keep searching to compare products across multiple retailers, plan their project, and put together a final budget. 

To own the whole project sale, retailers need to own the entire inspiration to transaction to advocacy journey. With both online and in-store applications, Retailers leverage Marxent’s 3D Room Planner app to build shopper confidence, capture the whole room sale and win the customer over.

Through Marxent’s 3D Room Commerce solution, users experience a cyclical inspiration to transaction to advocacy journey. It starts with shoppers viewing inspirational images and media online. Using Marxent’s applications, they can design directly from inspirational images to create a custom, configured space without any product catalog knowledge. Shoppers can visualize the products they love together and in the context of their own floor plan instead of navigating product pages and wondering if items will work together. 

Then, they can add the whole room to a shopping cart with a single click. While this virtual experience does lead to a transaction, it also allows users to save, collaborate on, and share the spaces they’ve created. They become advocates by sharing their projects on social media, starting the inspirational content cycle again. 

Putting an end to manual operations

To deliver renders at scale, Marxent needed to update their cloud render solution. Initially, our 3D Art team operated a manual on-premise render fleet. However, this required many hours of manual setup, configuration, and operation. We also had to manage expensive graphics servers—bare metal, CPUs, GPUs, RAM, HDD, and more. The only solution was to automate the 3D rendering process and empower end-users to rapidly create their own 3D room renders. 

When we were evaluating new solutions, we saw distinct advantages in the Google Cloud Platform that would help them safely and securely scale their business, while strengthening their partnerships with end customers. For example, in moving to Google Cloud, we could automate and scale our rendering process without having to manage fleets of physical servers. We also viewed the platform as an asset due to Google’s secure-by-design infrastructure, agility, data analytics capabilities, and potential for joining the Marketplace.

Creating magical customer experiences that inspire purchase

To provide our customers and shoppers with contextual experiences, Marxent’s applications use mid-poly 3D models that balance speed and realism. These models provide a latency-free, real-time design experience that can be rendered into scenes that are realistic enough to be perceived as photos on social media. 

The complex process of rendering these images requires a combination of efficiency, speed, analytics, and consistent performance that Google Cloud provides. When configured with powerful and speedy gaming GPUs, Marxent can provide fast rendering that meets customers and shopper demands. Here’s a look at our HD Renders application.

Before a user can request an HD Render, they must create a room in the Marxent 3D Room Planner. Once requested, Marxent pulls the saved project from the database and kicks off the process with Cloud Pub/Sub. The project loads into a gaming GPU, using the same platform code running when the user first creates the room in the application. It boots up the app in the cloud to load the room.

The code then scours the space and prepares it for rendering, adjusting texture formats, and adding in lighting. After going through the render engine, the project automatically uploads to Cloud Storage. Finally, the user receives a link to the final product. Throughout, Cloud Pub/Sub handles messages ensuring the right event processes are happening, such as rendering success or failure.

Using this process, it’s possible to create dozens of images out of a single scene, trading products in and out of a floor plan by leveraging a complete catalog of content geometries and covers, textures, and finishes.

Today, Marxent’s applications power world-class retailers with AR, VR, and 3D commerce experiences. We use cutting-edge graphics hardware to create renderings in less than 2 minutes per screenshot, often much faster. TELUS and Google Cloud Partner to Move Towards a More Sustainable Future

Environmental sustainability is a key priority for TELUS, a world-leading communications technology company. TELUS surpassed its sustainability objectives in 2019 and is now on a journey to procure all of its electricity from renewable or low-emitting sources by 2025. Next, it aims to achieve net carbon neutrality for its operations by 2030. TELUS has also been named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for 21 consecutive years, a feat unmatched by any other North American telecom or cable company. In 2021, it became the first company in Canada to release a Sustainability-linked bond (SLB) framework and complete an SLB offering, formally linking TELUS financing to its environmental performance.

“We’ve spent the last decade becoming a global leader in sustainability, helping make the planet healthier by ensuring that our operations are as environmentally responsible as possible,” said Geoff Pegg, Head of Sustainability and Environment at TELUS.

In part, TELUS’ strategy is focused on three key areas:

  1. Seek the best renewable energy options available
  2. Focus on migrating workloads to the cloud
  3. Embrace a multiplier effect through the use of sustainable partners

Renewable energy impact

Part of this environmental responsibility involves investing heavily in renewable energy sources through power purchase agreements (PPAs) that help renewable energy providers like wind farms and solar companies develop their infrastructure. TELUS executed PPAs with four Alberta-based solar and wind facilities to provide 100 per cent of its electricity load demand in a province where one-third of the grid is powered by coal.

As a technology company, electricity represents a large portion of TELUS’ energy needs: 80 percent of the operational carbon footprint comes from the power requirements for TELUS’ network and administrative buildings, Pegg explains. While TELUS is using renewable energy sources and low-emitting energy grids to power its buildings and network, there’s also the often-forgotten part of the carbon emissions equation: the energy it takes to power data centers. As the International Energy Agency recently reported, data centers represent 1 percent of the global electricity demand and that figure is expected to keep rising as the world increases usage of data-heavy technologies.

“It’s probably no surprise that everyone, whether you’re a business or a consumer, is concerned about reducing carbon emissions,” said Chris Talbott, the Google Cloud Sustainability Lead. “A lot of us think about the carbon emissions associated with our cars or with the electricity that powers our homes, but oftentimes we forget about the carbon emissions that come from the digital services that we use or the networks required to deliver that data.”

As a leader in sustainability, how can TELUS meet the energy demands of its customers while also protecting the environment? One way is through the company’s previously announced collaboration with Google Cloud. The two companies are working together to build a more sustainable world through technology and reduce TELUS’ carbon footprint, create value along the entire supply chain, and optimize industry solutions for social impact through data analytics and machine learning.

Taking a cloud first approach — reducing carbon emissions with green cloud computing

Google became carbon neutral in 2007 and has achieved 100 per cent renewable energy matching every year since 2017. Google has invested in renewable energy to match the electricity we use across our entire operations, including Google Cloud, meaning every workload that TELUS runs on Google Cloud has been matched with renewable energy purchases.

“The operational carbon footprint of running anything on Google Cloud is zero,” Talbott said. Also, by working with Google, TELUS gets the benefit of economies of scale using less electricity. Not only is TELUS leveraging Google data centers, it’s also relying on the digital collaboration made possible by Google Workspace to reduce the amount of travel required by employees attending meetings in different offices. Collaboration tools like Google Meet can reduce the carbon footprint of in-person conferences by 94 percent.

Google compensates for the environmental footprint of any electricity used in the data center and out to the edge network. “You can feel pretty good about using Google Meet because it’s carbon-neutral,” Talbott said.

Multiplier through sustainable partnerships — green cloud computing radiates out

By supporting TELUS in its environmental sustainability efforts, Google Cloud is also enabling TELUS to do the same for its various partnerships. For example, powered by Google Cloud’s infrastructure and data analytics capabilities, TELUS is partnering with Picacity (formerly NXN Digital) and Google Cloud to deliver an ecosystem of integrated smart technologies that enable cities to improve the lives of their residents.

From dynamic traffic signaling that reduces congestion and emissions, to data analytics that create smarter, more efficient city planning, the partnership is transforming the way municipalities operate in our increasingly digital world.The partnership is built on four foundational pillars of infrastructure and environmental sustainability, intelligent transportation, public safety and security, and health. In the case of intelligent transportation, this means sensors, cameras, and other devices are built into or near roads, sidewalks, and bike paths to provide data for innovative software to improve traffic flow in real time. The data can then foster informed decisions about infrastructure, city planning, fleet optimization, and public safety.

All of these environmental measures may seem small when compared with the enormity of the problem that is climate change, but as Talbott said, “Change begins with the small decisions we make every day such as paying attention to the practices of companies that we’ve come to rely on daily in the modern world. They may seem small and in the margins, but at scale, this is how we can make a real impact.”

The Synopsys Cloud BYOC deployment architecture on Google Cloud is enabled through their unique cloud metering service which uses Google Cloud regional MIGs (Managed Instance Groups) for autoscaling and multi-zone deployment. This enables the service to scale up to meet customer workload demands and scale down to optimize costs. Secrets used by Synopsys Cloud are securely stored in Google Secret Manager and usage data is encrypted using Google Cloud key management, providing customers with a highly secure design environment.

Learn to Access Process Metrics for Full-visibility into Software and Infrastructure behind Your Apps

You can gain full visibility into the processes running on VMs with the new Ops Agent available by default on Cloud Monitoring. Read blog to learn how to access process metrics and why you should start monitoring them.

When you are experiencing an issue with your application or service, having deep visibility into both the infrastructure and the software powering your apps and services is critical. Most monitoring services provide insights at the Virtual Machine (VM) level, but few go further. To get a full picture of the state of your application or service, you need to know what processes are running on your infrastructure. That visibility into the processes running on your VMs is provided out of the box by the new Ops Agent and made available by default in Cloud Monitoring. Today we will cover how to access process metrics and why you should start monitoring them. 

Better visibility with process metrics

The data gathered by process metrics include CPU, memory, I/O, number of threads, and more, for any running processes and services on your VMs. When the Ops Agent or the Cloud Monitoring agent is installed, these metrics are captured at 60-second intervals and sent to Cloud Monitoring so you can visualize, analyze, track, and alert on them. A single VM may run tens or hundreds of processes, while you may have tens of thousands running across your fleet of VMs. 

As a developer, you may only care about seeing inside a single VM to troubleshoot and identify memory leaks or the source of performance issues.

As an operator or IT Admin, you may be interested in aggregate resource consumption, building baseline views of compute, storage, and networking usage across your VM fleet. Then, when those baseline consumption levels break normal behaviors, you will know when to investigate your systems.

Built for scale and ease of use

Cloud Monitoring is built on the same advanced backend that powers metrics across Google. This proven scalability means your metrics ingestion will be supported despite the extremely high cardinality. Additionally, our agents do not require any config file changes to turn on process metric monitoring.

Lastly, our goal is to provide you the observability and telemetry data where, and when, you need it. So, like the rest of the operations suite, we deliver process metrics in the context of your infrastructure, directly in the VM admin console.

The navigation is simple. Once you have the Ops Agent or the Cloud Monitoring agent installed in your VMs:

  1. Go to the Compute Engine console page and click on VM Instances 
  2. Select the VM that you want to investigate
  3. In the navigation menu on the top, click Observability
  4. Click on Metrics
  5. Lastly, click on Processes

In the window on the right you will see a chart and a table with all of the processes in your VM. You can also filter by time frame and sort by name or value. You do not need to do anything, other than have the agent installed, for the process to be detected and displayed.

Fleet-wide metrics monitoring

Cloud Monitoring gives you a look across your fleet of VMs so you can identify the aggregated usage of resources by processes. This level of broad, yet granular, insight can drive your decisions around which software to run or how many VMs you need to optimally power your apps and services. Admins can perform a cost-savings analysis if they determine that certain processes are slowing down the work of a large number of VMs. The larger numbers of less powerful VMs can be replaced by fewer, more capable VMs.   

To get this fleet-wide view:

  1. Navigate to Cloud Monitoring 
  2. Click Dashboards in the left menu
  3. In the All Dashboards list, click on VM Instances
  4. Towards the top of the window, click on Processes

This provides many charts detailing the processes running across your fleet of VMs.

Get started today

To start identifying and monitoring your process metrics, you must first install the Ops Agent, or have installed the legacy Cloud Monitoring agent. Once that is complete, the process metrics data will automatically be ingested into Cloud Monitoring and the VM admin console.
