Today, retail customers have more digital-first, convenient ways of shopping than ever before. And APIs are one of the critical pieces of technology that have made this possible by giving retailers the ability to transform their systems and processes in an efficient and quick way. 

APIs have allowed retailers to be more accessible to their remote customers with services such as order online and pick up in-store, curbside pickup, fulfilment of orders through delivery partners, and personalized recommendations while shopping online etc. These capabilities have been especially important over the last year, as the world has changed at a rapid pace.  With many changes to customer interactions yet to come, APIs will continue to play a pivotal role in helping retailers to further personalize digital experiences and streamline their operations.

In Google Cloud’s State of API Economy 2021 report, 32% of organizations reported increasing their digital transformation investments, while 16% stated they would completely change their strategies to become digital-first companies. Moreover, by early 2021, online sales had already reached levels previously predicted for 2022, and APIs will become the foundation for business resilience and growth in retail over the next five years. 

APIs are at the forefront of retail innovation

Retailers leverage APIs to experiment and connect teams for faster collaboration, helping them to use data for revolutionary experiences that increase customer engagement. 

They allow retailers to innovate in new ways internally, externally, and across market borders. Modern digital experiences are built from a variety of data and functionality, throughout the entire supply chain, across multiple systems, and often belonging to a variety of services across distribution channels. APIs are the digital nervous system connecting everything together. They help retailers enhance internal efficiency, partner at scale, and leverage cutting-edge services such as machine learning—all because they make various kinds of technological value interoperable and easy for developers to access and reuse. In our research, 52% of retailers said APIs accelerate innovation by enabling partners to leverage digital assets at scale while 36% say they see APIs as strategic assets for creating business value.

Let’s take a look at some retail use cases and real world examples that are powered by APIs.

Deliver personalized customer experiences

Retailers are using APIs to create interactive and predictive personalized experiences.These range from “magic” mirrors that reflect personalized clothing, accessory, and even makeup suggestions; to smartphone alerts that encourage shoppers to check out special items while they’re browsing in the store; offers of coupons; and more. Behind the scenes APIs interconnect between the store and consumer data, business intelligence, and application security to bring these innovative experiences to life. 

Streamline retail operations

APIs can help any retail business to operate more efficiently, from human resources, customer service, and distribution, to invoicing, marketing, and compliance. For example, APIs make it super easy and simple to onboard, manage and train employees and contractors. They can help connect various internal and external third-party systems for use cases like tracking real-time package status and gathering consumer shopping insights.

Conrad Electronic, German retailer of electronic products, demonstrates how API management can lead to enhanced efficiency. They used Apigee to build a tool that provides store employees and visitors with product, service, and warranty information on their mobile devices. The company was able to not only use data to enhance offers and services to their customers, but also streamline operations because more than 60% of their customers were using the API-enabled tool.

APIs are key to driving innovation across all areas of retail. They are enabling retailers to not only implement continuous digital transformation but also develop tools that navigate disruptions as they occur.

Application programming interfaces, or APIs, are the way software talks to other software so by definition, they’re a technology that connects systems.

Many enterprise leaders think of them primarily in these terms. For example, 57 percent of respondents to Google’s Enterprise Digital Maturity Assessment Tool, Apigee Compass, characterize APIs as systems integration technology.

But APIs are much more. They’re interfaces that enable developers to repeatedly leverage data, functions, and applications to build new products and services. They’re how a business expresses itself via software, and they enable that business to rapidly expand into new contexts or adapt to meet changing user needs and preferences.

Take ridesharing apps. They exist partly because they can leverage existing capabilities made available via others’ APIs. When people order a car, a ridesharing app leverages services such as Google Maps APIs for navigation. In turn, those ridesharing companies express their businesses as APIs. This lets developers build ridesharing into new experiences, such as allowing an end user to order a ride via a voice assistant. When the user pays for a ride with a given digital payments platform, an API enables that transaction too.

A month into 2022, Google Cybersecurity team has plenty of updates on products, resources and news. Tune into 2022's first Cloud CISO perspectives to power your org's IT decisions and investments based on the ongoing cloud security trends!

I’m excited to share our first Cloud CISO Perspectives post of 2022. It’s already shaping up to be an eventful year for our industry and we’re only in month one. There’s a lot to recap in this post, including the U.S. government’s recent efforts to address critical security issues, like open source software security and zero trust architectures. We’ve also released new resources from our Google Cybersecurity Action Team like the Cloud Security Megatrends and the Boards of Directors whitepaper on cloud risk governance

Cloud Security Megatrends 

We’re often asked if the cloud is more secure than on-prem (and why) so we shared our answer in a recent blog post. At Google Cloud, security by design is our priority. We’ve long adopted zero-trust principles for our baseline security architectures and built a global network that relies on defense in depth layers to protect against configuration errors and attacks. But security is always evolving and that is why we also take advantage of the following megatrends:

  1. Economy of scale: Decreasing the marginal cost of security raises the baseline level of security. 
  2. Shared fate: A flywheel of increasing trust drives more transition to the cloud, which compels even higher security and even more skin-in-the-game from the cloud provider.
  3. Healthy competition: The race by deep-pocketed cloud providers to create and implement leading security technologies is the tip of the spear of innovation. 
  4. Cloud as the digital immune system: Every security update the cloud gives the customer is informed by some threat, vulnerability, or new attack technique often identified by someone else’s experience. Enterprise IT leaders use this accelerating feedback loop to get better protection.
  5. Software-defined infrastructure: Cloud is software defined, so it can be dynamically configured without customers having to manage hardware placement or cope with administrative toil. From a security standpoint, that means specifying security policies as code, and continuously monitoring their effectiveness.
  6. Increasing deployment velocity: Because of cloud’s vast scale, providers have had to automate software deployments and updates, usually with automated continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) systems. That same automation delivers security enhancements, resulting in more frequent security updates.
  7. Simplicity: Cloud becomes an abstraction-generating machine for identifying, creating and deploying simpler default modes of operating securely and autonomically. 
  8. Sovereignty meets sustainability: The cloud’s global scale and ability to operate in localized and distributed ways creates three pillars of sovereignty. This global scale can also be leveraged to improve energy efficiency.

If you’re an IT decision maker, pay attention to these megatrends that will continue to drive and reinforce cloud security and will outpace the security of on-prem infrastructure well into the future. 

U.S. Federal government cybersecurity momentum 

  • Open source software security: Earlier this month, Google participated in the White House Summit on open source software security. The meeting came at a critical time for the industry following December’s Log4j vulnerabilities and was both a recognition of the challenge and an important first step towards addressing it. The open source software ecosystem is not homogenous, despite the fact that the industry often thinks of or treats it this way. Some of it, like Linux, is highly curated, while other critical software is supported through diffuse communities including technology companies and other stakeholders. There is also a long tail of many other critical projects driven by a dedicated community of maintainers around the world, including Googlers. In light of this reality, we welcomed the chance to share our recommendations to advance the future of open source software security. Some work we’ve done includes founding the Open Source Security Foundation, which has been instrumental already in making security improvements. We’ve also helped drive a number of key security initiatives within the open source community including security scorecards, the SLSA framework to improve the security and integrity of open source packages, and Secure Open Source Rewards to financially incentivize improvements to critical open source security projects.  
  • OMB’s Federal zero trust strategy: The publication of the Office of Management and Budget’s zero trust architecture strategy marks an important step for the U.S. federal government’s efforts to modernize under Executive Order 14028. Google Cloud supports this approach, which recognizes the immense security benefits offered by modern computing architectures. For the past decade, Google has successfully applied zero trust principles through our BeyondCorp and BeyondProd frameworks for providing end-user access and securing our cloud workloads. And we’ve brought these best practices from our own journey to global governments and businesses of any size through solutions like BeyondCorp Enterprise and capabilities like Binary Authorization and Anthos Service Mesh, which are embedded in Anthos, our managed application platform. For Federal agencies embarking on this zero trust journey, the Google Cybersecurity Action Team will offer our expertise by conducting Zero Trust Foundations strategy workshops, which can help organizations in the public and private sectors develop actionable and achievable strategies and plans for zero trust implementation. 

Google Cybersecurity Action Team Highlights 

Here are the latest updates, products, services and resources across our security teams this month: 

Security

  • Democratizing security operations: We recently announced that Siemplify, a leading security orchestration, automation and response (SOAR) provider, is joining Google Cloud to help companies better manage their threat response. Providing a proven SOAR capability with Chronicle’s approach to security analytics is an important step forward in our vision to advance invisible security and democratize security operations for every organization.
  • Security by design: The Highmark Health security team is using “secure-by-design” techniques to address the security, privacy, and compliance aspects of its Living Health solution with Google Cloud’s Professional Services Organization (PSO). Google has long advocated for and followed security by design principles, which is why we’re continuously building enhanced security, controls, resiliency and more into our cloud products and services. 
  • Secure collaboration for hybrid work environments: The Google Workspace team shared its recommendations for businesses as they prepare for the future of work,  where the hybrid/flexible work model is becoming standard practice and a new approach to security is essential.
  • Anthos Policy Controller CIS Benchmark enforcement: A big part of our shared fate philosophy is to build secure products and not just security products. A recent example of this in action is embedding CIS benchmark policy conformance in the Anthos Policy Controller. We believe the more we embed approaches like this into our products, the more application and infrastructure teams can intrinsically embed security at the start and reduce toil for the security team.
  • DevOps for technology-driven organizations and startups: A key success factor for many security programs is the partnership and integration with development teams, and there are some great resources and lessons in our DORA research.
  • Security by design with Chrome OS: ABN AMRO’s Asia-Pacific region team recently shared how they are using Chrome OS and CloudReady to work securely in the cloud, reduce total cost of ownership, and add flexibility for employees. This is a great example of secure by design principles in the use of Chromium.

Risk & Compliance

  • Boards of Directors summary guide to cloud risk governance: The latest whitepaper from the Google Cybersecurity Action Team outlines how boards of directors can prioritize safe, secure, and compliant adoption processes for cloud technologies within their organizations.  
  • TruSight Risk Assessment of Google Cloud: TruSight recently released a comprehensive
    risk assessment report on Google Cloud. Our Enterprise Trust team collaborated on this robust assessment of Google Cloud services to validate the design and implementation of controls. TruSight’s risk assessment of our security controls will help customers accelerate and complete their risk management due diligence.
  • Data governance: Check out this new blog series on data governance where our teams explain the role of data governance, its importance, and the necessary processes to run an effective data governance program. Implementing data governance will help maximize value derived from business data, build user trust, and ensure compliance with required security measures.

As CentOS 7 reaches end of life, many enterprises are considering their options for an enterprise-grade, downstream Linux distribution on which to run their production applications. Rocky Linux has emerged as a strong alternative that, like CentOS, is 100% compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

In April 2022, we announced a customer support partnership with CIQ, the official support and services partner and sponsor of Rocky Linux, as the first step in providing a best-in-class enterprise-grade supported experience for Rocky Linux on Google Cloud. Today we’re excited to announce the general availability of Rocky Linux Optimized for Google Cloud. We developed this collection of Compute Engine virtual machine images in close collaboration with CIQ so that you get optimal performance when using Rocky Linux on Compute Engine to run your CentOS workloads.

These new images contain customized variants of the Rocky Linux kernel and modules that optimize networking performance on Compute Engine infrastructure, while retaining bug-for-bug compatibility with Community Rocky Linux and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The high bandwidth networking enabled by these customizations will be beneficial to virtually any workload, and are especially valuable for clustered workloads such as HPC (see this page for more details on configuring a VM with high bandwidth).

Going forward, we’ll collaborate with CIQ to publish both the community and Optimized for Google Cloud editions of Rocky Linux for every major release, and both sets of images will receive the latest kernel and security updates provided by CIQ and the Rocky Linux community. And of course, we’ll offer support with CIQ for both these images, per our partnership.

Rocky Linux Optimized for Google Cloud lets you take advantage of everything Compute Engine has to offer, including day-one support for our latest VM families, GPUs, and high-bandwidth networking. And for customers building for a multi-cloud deployment environment, the community Rocky images have you covered.

A Guide to Anthos Hybrid Environment Reference Architecture

To help improve your security posture, improve the reliability of your applications, and reduce configuration drift in your environment, we’re excited to announce a new Anthos reference architecture.

Written in collaboration across our product, engineering, support, and field teams, this new reference architecture helps you plan, deploy, and configure the required components for Anthos hybrid environments.

Anthos hybrid environments give you the flexibility to deploy on-premises components that run container-based workloads and VMs using Anthos clusters on VMware and Anthos clusters on bare metal. You can continue to utilize existing investments in your on-premises infrastructure, and start to add components like Anthos Config Management. When you’re ready to bring everything together, you can add additional Google Cloud-based services like Artifact RegistryCloud Monitoring, and Identity and Access Management (IAM).

The following sneak peek covers some of our best practices for architecting an Anthos hybrid environment. For more detailed guidance and planning information, see the full Anthos hybrid environment reference architecture.

When you design and deploy an Anthos hybrid environment, we recommend that you use two or more on-premises computing customer sites and two or more Google Cloud regions. In your sites, run multiple clusters. This approach is recommended for several reasons, such as:

  • Disaster recovery. If one cluster or site fails, you can continue to run workloads.
  • Multiple environments, like production and staging, to test infrastructure changes.
  • Different cluster types in each environmentadmin clusters and user clusters. This approach separates administrative resources, which is a security best-practice.

The following diagram shows an example of an Anthos hybrid environment that’s spread across customer sites and regions, with different clusters for admin and user workloads and for production and staging:

In each site, you can use Anthos clusters on VMware or Anthos clusters on bare metal. For both products, we recommend the following:

  • Use a highly available (HA) control plane with three members for continued control plane availability concurrently with operating system upgrades, control plane software updates, or single-machine hardware or kernel failures.
  • Deploy two admin clusters so that admin cluster configuration changes and updates can be tested in the staging environment first.

The following diagram shows an example of Anthos clusters on bare metal with control plane and worker nodes spread across physical machines. With Anthos clusters on VMware, the control plane and worker nodes are spread across VMware VMs:

Configure your on-premises clusters and applications to send logging and monitoring data back to Google Cloud for analysis and review. Different personas should only be granted access to the environments they need. The following diagram shows how application developers and application or platform operators can then view logging and monitoring data in Google Cloud:

Use Anthos Config Management to manage Kubernetes objects in your clusters. Anthos Config Management is a GitOps-style tool that uses a Git repository or Open Container Initiative (OCI) as its storage mechanism and source of truth. Git provider workflows allow multiple stakeholders to participate in review of changes.

As shown in the following diagram, a common Anthos Config Management deployment uses one folder containing configuration for all clusters. Use separate additional folders to hold configuration data, one for application:

Plan and implement a way to secure the network traffic in your Anthos hybrid environment. The following services help with authentication, connectivity, and communication in a cluster:

  • Anthos Identity Service connects clusters to on-site identity providers to authenticate local access.
  • Connect gateway and workforce identity federation can provide secure cloud-mediated access to mobile workforce clusters without using a VPN.
  • Workload Identity provides on-premises workloads with managed short-lifetime credentials for access to cloud resources.
  • Anthos Service Mesh encrypts and controls communication between services in the same cluster.

The following diagram shows how Anthos Service Mesh can control the flow of traffic between services within your clusters:

You don’t have to implement all these cloud-based services as part of your initial on-premises deployments. As you become more comfortable and want to expand your capabilities, you can add in some of these hybrid offerings. But, we hope that this blog post has given you some ideas to think about when you start to plan and design your own Anthos hybrid environments.

Ather Energy, India’s first-ever electric scooter, turns to Google Cloud to support the smooth running of its vehicles, lower costs, improve time to market, and create a great customer experience.

In 2013, long before the world was discussing clean energy and sustainable practices, two IIT Madras graduates — Swapnil Jain and Tarun Mehta — had an idea to develop India’s first-ever electrical scooter.
