Bare Metal Solution also comes with automation tools to help you onboard your environment quickly—provisioning your applications, relational databases, configuring popular operating systems and setting up services such as backups and monitoring. The nitty gritty 

Many of the workloads that run on Bare Metal Solution have demanding CPU and I/O requirements. Bare Metal Solution provides a cost-effective and scalable architecture based on state-of-the-art x86 servers and high-performance, resilient storage. The servers are offered in several fixed configurations that support most mainstream enterprise operating systems:

  • Dual-socket x86 systems
    • 16 core with 384 GB DRAM
    • 24 core with 768 GB DRAM
    • 56 core with 1536 GB DRAM
  • Quad-socket x86 systems
    • 56 core with 1536 GB DRAM 
    • 112 core with 3072 GB DRAM

Bare Metal Solution servers can be used for standalone applications, or configured with application native or database native clustering technologies for high availability. Storage is offered in 1TB volume increments of either hybrid or all-flash disk. For applications that require custom compute shapes or special-purpose hardware, we also offer bespoke hardware configurations. 

Bare Metal Solution uses OEM hardware that is certified for many ISV software applications as well as custom built applications, including those built on Oracle Database. These hardware configurations are offered as a subscription, billed monthly with a preferred term length of 36 months. A digital wave swept the retail and consumer goods industry by the virtue of the pandemic in 2020. Brands that managed to embrace this reality to make their online operations sustainable and agile have takeaways on disruption amid changes.

2020 saw an unprecedented change in consumer behaviour around the world, with shoppers finding new ways of discovering, evaluating and buying products. This has created fresh expectations for both brands and retailers to drive consumer closeness, embrace the digital moment and transform their operations to be more agile and sustainable. These themes have been top of mind in my conversations with our CPG customers, and set the tone at Google Cloud Summit for Retail and Consumer Goods, which concluded this week. I couldn’t be more proud of our team and thankful for our customers that supported us by participating in our sessions and attending the event.

I joined Google Cloud in January 2021 after a long career in the CPG industry, and as I shared in my CPG keynote at the summit, I am thrilled to be helping bring the power of Google to drive industry innovation in CPG. At Google we call this ‘new normal’ the transformation cloud era, where we’re working with customers who want to not just save money on storage or compute, but to use cloud and digital technologies to drive agility across their business. I also call it the era of ‘consumer switching’, because Covid-19 has accelerated the likelihood of consumers to switch brands or the way they shop. Some of these changes are still happening; over 40% shoppers in a recent Google survey reported that in March 2021 they changed brands or shopped online for something they were previously buying in store.

At Google, we have an amazing team of strategists who have been researching, observing, and analyzing the many facets of consumer behavior over the last few years. In the opening keynote at the Summit Capturing the Hearts and Minds of Today’s Consumers, Google’s Human Truths Team kicked off the Retail & Consumer Goods summit by sharing some of their consumer insights, including what behavior patterns they think will “stick” as we move into a post-pandemic world.  I think these insights are especially relevant for brands, as they speak to some of our latest findings on the CPG shopper’s mindset.

Accenture estimates that there could be a 3 trillion dollar shift in value between companies as a result of consumers shifting brands and behaviours. While it is not known who the winners of the shift will be, one thing is certain – those who will be able to leverage data and analytics fastest will benefit the most from these times of rapid change. I shared some of the implications for the CPG industry in my keynote How to grow brands in times of rapid change along with the three key areas in which Google cloud is helping CPG companies drive brand success:

  3. Driving connected, efficient, and sustainable operations

Let’s take a quick look at each of them:

Unlocking consumer growth with data-powered insights

The digital marketing ecosystem is transforming for a privacy centric world, and brands are seeing a direct impact in marketing effectiveness. As the CPG industry becomes more consumer-centric and shifts more toward direct-to-consumer (D2C) business models, acquiring and activating consented first-party consumer data presents a clear opportunity to capitalize on new consumer demands. 

As a result, CPGs are turning to consumer data platforms (CDPs) to help them unify, manage, enrich, and secure all of their disparate data from different marketing tools, website analytics, email campaigns, loyalty programs, and more. Google Cloud and our ecosystem of partners can help CPGs build a privacy-centric CDP which brings together all their customer and marketing data into a modern data warehouse, with built-in predictive data visualization tools and models. With a CDP built on Google Cloud, you can integrate data from Google Marketing Platform to drive predictive marketing and media effectiveness. And with pre-built connectors you can also easily integrate non-Google media and data from other enterprise platforms like SAP and Oracle to leverage consumer data for more integrated decision making. Democratize access to data across the organization with our Business Intelligence tool Looker to enable faster decisions in real-time from marketing to supply chain to product innovation.

At the Retail & CPG Summit we shared how retailers and brands can drive consumer closeness in a privacy-centric world  featuring Procter & Gamble’s experience building and activating consumer data in a privacy-safe way to serve consumers better and maximize marketing effectiveness and drive growth across their business. And in a demo, Constellation Brands shared how they’re leveraging real-time data from several commercial sources using Looker to unpack insights and develop action plans.

Transforming go-to-market in the omnichannel ecosystem

Amidst COVID-19 restrictions and rolling lockdowns, ecommerce activity has surged past a point of no return. Direct to consumer (D2C)  or digitally native brands were able to minimize consumers switching during the pandemic  by offering a great online experience. While in-person shopping remains important, consumers are expecting more digital and omnichannel experiences and many will continue to explore new brands and purchase online. CPGs that want to maintain their market leadership can no longer afford to ignore the key role omnichannel capabilities will play in capturing the attention of both retailers and consumers.  Even if D2C sales are not a big portion of your business, you will benefit from first-party data that can help you drive insights and product innovation. 

CPG brands want to transform their older, clunky ordering processes into modern digital shopping experiences. Re-platforming legacy solutions on Google Cloud not only accelerates application innovation, but also makes it easier to quickly launch new features and products. At Google Cloud we have transformed ecommerce for large D2C brands and traditional retailers, so we know what a best in class D2C experience looks like. And we can bring it to your brands. Driving connected, efficient, and sustainable operations

The superpowers of  AI/ML are not just for marketing.  Did you know that research from MIT and Google Cloud has found companies that use AI/ML can drive 2x more data-driven decisions, 5x faster decision making, and 3x faster execution? By connecting your operations in real time with demand signals like search, trends, weather, mobility and supercharging this data with AI and ML, you can make smarter and quicker business decisions. For example, you can use search trends to drive demand forecasting and ramp up manufacturing for popular products.

Google Cloud can help you modernize legacy business applications by migrating them to the cloud and using AI/ML and smart analytics to drive business outcomes. Take SAP for example – a Forrester study found that modernizing SAP with Google not only resulted in 56% more efficient IT teams – it also generated 160% 3-year ROI. 

SAP data on Google Cloud breaks down silos across SAP, marketing, manufacturing systems, and external data sources for next-level intelligent operations. For example, with SAP and Google Cloud, you can combine product, media, CRM, digital commerce and site data from SAP and non-SAP sources to uncover stronger consumer insights and fuel product discovery along the path to purchase. You can merge SAP product and sales data with consumer,  market data and Google geo trends to drive targeted promotion outcomes, maximizing the ROI of promotional dollars across retail channels. You can also integrate supply chain and manufacturing data from SAP systems with consumer, marketing and Google geo market data to improve demand forecasting and optimize supply chain logistics. The possibilities are endless. Another solution that excites me is Vertex AI, which transforms the demand forecasting process. Traditional demand forecasting accuracy is a challenge for most CPGs. Current forecasting methods do not take into account granular factors that impact demand, like local weather, demographics, or unforeseen events. With our recently launched Vertex Forecast, Google is making it much easier to start using cutting-edge machine learning models for demand forecasting. In our session Demand Forecasting: Time for Intelligence, Not Intuition featuring American Eagle Outfitters, we share how you can adopt a data science approach to demand forecasting that’s customized to your unique needs.

CPG organizations come to Google for help solving their toughest problems, whether it be driving new consumer growth, unlocking new routes to market, or building connected, sustainable operations. And we bring the best of Google: innovation, culture, infrastructure, AI/ML, and a deep understanding of consumer behaviour to help them build best-in-class brands. 

I’d like to end with a topic that’s very close to my heart. This is around Solving for Sustainability in Retail and Consumer Goods. Our research shows that 62% of shoppers cared about at least one sustainability aspect when purchasing online in 2020. In addition, the events of the past year have triggered consumers to re-evaluate their relationships with brands and prioritize those that are more sustainable in the context of the pandemic. How One Company Uses AI and Data Analysis to Boost Revenue

With Google Cloud, ViSenze has created a data platform that can ingest and process 500 million records per day and store data for up to one year, while giving non-technical team members the ability to generate detailed, insightful reports.

AI, deep learning, and image recognition is transforming the shopping experience. These technologies enable consumers to use product images or screenshots rather than text to search for similar products. This improves the customer experience and enables retailers with online and offline outlets to provide a genuine omnichannel experience.

The lack of complexity and the ease of use of BigQuery has enabled ViSenze to reduce its data infrastructure and management costs by 30%–50%, and scale up without incurring downtime.

Visual commerce provider ViSenze is helping some of the world’s leading retailers improve conversion rates through image-based search.

The business’s products also enable media companies to use the platform to turn images and videos into engagement opportunities—driving new and incremental revenues.

Created through NExT—a research center established by the National University of Singapore and Tsinghua University of China—ViSenze now operates in the United States, United Kingdom, India, China, and Singapore. The business is backed by Japan-based internet and ecommerce company Rakuten and cross-border investment specialist WI Harper Group.

Growth in SMB and Mobiles

Renjie Yao, Data Platform Lead at ViSenze, sees opportunities for growth in the small-to-medium business sector, where companies do not have the resources to build similar technologies, and with mobile device OEMs to integrate ViSenze natively on smartphones.

Phone owners can activate a “shopping lens” on camera and gallery apps to capture an image of a product. They then receive matching results from more than 800 partner merchants and retailers and can then click through to product pages on partner apps or mobile websites. Alternatively, they may use a photo to compare products sold on different sites or shop matching styles.

The ViSenze API analyzes the contents of a selected or clicked image and sends the information back to the organization’s visual commerce platform. The platform feeds back similar results based on that information.

The ViSenze offering also extends to image analysis for the tagging of product attributes—such as a white turtleneck cardigan with full sleeves—to provide an improved search experience.

Data Vital to ViSenze

Capturing and analyzing large volumes of data is integral to ViSenze. “We have to understand how consumers interact with our customers’ ecommerce websites and apps,” says Yao. “For example, we need to know who has looked at a particular pair of jeans on a website and whether that visit led to a conversion. We can then tell that customer whether they need to make more stock available.”

ViSenze also relies on data to provide high-quality training for its image recognition models and its domain-specific models for online retail.

Protect Customer Data

Data is vital to ViSenze—but customer privacy is most important. “All the data we collect is transparent to our customers, meaning they can decide what they do not want us to collect. In addition, all personal data processing complies with privacy protection regulations in each region, such as the General Data Protection Regulation in Europe.”

A Quick Move to the Cloud

ViSenze started operations using servers, storage, networking, and associated systems in an on-premises data center operated by NExT.

However, to support rapid growth, the business decided to move its workloads to the cloud. ViSenze opted for a multi-cloud architecture, using in part a Google Cloud data infrastructure.

“Our research found Google Cloud provided a complete, integrated ecosystem rather than a disparate collection of tools and components, and so was ideal for our needs,” says Yao. “We could connect different components with the click of a mouse.” Further, the business found it could easily configure rules and pipelines to route data logs to relevant Google Cloud services.

The review found Google Cloud’s extensive managed services would also remove administration and maintenance tasks from ViSenze’s in-house technology team—freeing team members to focus on more valuable tasks.

In addition, Google Cloud provided the security features—including custom hardware running hardened operating systems and file systems and encryption of data at rest and in transit—needed to protect sensitive information. Finally, the location of Google Cloud regions in several countries would enable the business to meet regulatory and data sovereignty requirements.

A Three-Month Implementation

ViSenze opted to move to Google Cloud in mid-2017 and completed a three-month implementation using internal resources. “The process was very smooth and intuitive, and we had no problems building our entire data platform within Google Cloud,” says Yao.

The business now uses an architecture comprising Google Kubernetes Engine to manage and orchestrate Docker containers running in Google Cloud Platform; BigQuery to provide an analytics data warehouse, with Google Data Studio providing customizable visualization and reports; Stackdriver to monitor and manage virtual machine instances and services inside Google Cloud; Cloud SQL to manage its relational databases for real-time analytics; Compute Engine to provide compute resources; Cloud Storage to store files and objects; Cloud Pub/Sub to provide real-time messaging between applications; and Cloud Functions to build event-driven applications.

After collecting the request logs of users in virtual machine instances and Docker containers, ViSenze distributes them in three directions. “We export raw logs into Cloud Pub/Sub for indexing inside an Elasticsearch search engine, and to a BigQuery data warehouse for further analytics,” explains Yao. “We also use Cloud Functions-created applications to obtain the logs from Cloud Pub/Sub to perform some real-time calculations.”

“We are currently using Airflow workflow management on Compute Engine as our hosted ETL platform, but are likely to move to Cloud Composer in future.”

500 Million Records Per Day

With Google Cloud providing its data infrastructure, ViSenze is well positioned to meet internal and customer demands for more granular insights. The business is now processing 500 million records per day through BigQuery and saves up to one year’s aggregated data—excluding any personal data—in the data warehouse for analysis.

The nature of ViSenze’s business means most reports are generated for data processed on an hourly, daily, or monthly basis. “BigQuery is extremely stable and performance optimized, regardless of the volume of data it processes,” says Yao. “Across BigQuery and other Google Cloud Platform services, we’ve recorded 99.99% availability over the past year.”

The lack of complexity and the ease of use of BigQuery has enabled ViSenze to reduce its data infrastructure and management costs by 30%–50%, and scale up without incurring downtime.

“With BigQuery, we have saved the equivalent of two full-time engineers and now need only half of one person’s time to maintain our whole data platform,” says Yao.

“In addition, BigQuery integrates closely with Data Studio, enabling non-technical people in our product and business teams to create dynamic, detailed analysis dashboards. We now use Data Studio to create nearly 50 separate reports.”

The business has now grown to offer access to more than 1 billion users and a listing of more than 400 million purchasable products.

Next Steps

ViSenze is now researching the potential of the Cloud AutoML suite of machine learning products to improve the training of its models and run a fully managed NoSQL database through Cloud Datastore.

“A NoSQL database service is the only missing piece of our architecture for now, and using Cloud Datastore would enable us to focus almost exclusively on our business,” says Yao. “With Google Cloud Platform, we are ideally positioned to continue providing support to our business team and help them continue expanding into new markets.

“In addition, we can help retailers and consumers to unlock the potential of the web and apps to transform the purchasing experience.”

Held Back by Database Scalability, This Financial Services Company Switches to Google Cloud and Cloud Spanner

Financial services provider, Azimut Group, turns to Google Cloud and Google Cloud Spanner. The result? It can scale up databases in two minutes instead of one day, and it saves 35% on cloud provider costs.

Azimut Group operates an international network of companies handling investment and asset management, mutual funds, hedge funds, and insurance. Founded in Milan, Italy in 1988, Azimut Group today has branches in fifteen countries, including Brazil, China, and the USA.

“We have subsidiaries and manage funds all over the world,” explains Simone Bertolotti, IT Manager at Azimut Holding S.p.a. “That means that any technology that we put in place has to cover needs from many different countries.”

“When complicated analysis has to be executed, we have to increase our table space in a couple of minutes so that the AI can drill down into the data and deliver the information we need.”

Azimut manages its funds with investment advisors who use information sourced from Bloomberg, Reuters and others. “They use a huge amount of data,” says Simone. “They work with spreadsheets, algorithms, formulae and they analyse data in minutes.” In finance, every second is crucial, which is why Azimut decided to develop a risk management dashboard that can process information even more quickly, then distribute it worldwide.

“When an advisor manages data, that data is used to make immediate decisions on funds, capital movements or whether to sell stock,” says Simone. “They have to be ready to make recommendations for any amount of data that comes to them. For our dashboard, that means that when additional information arrives or complicated analysis has to be executed, we have to increase our table space in a couple of minutes so that the AI can drill down into the data and deliver the information we need.”

Generating insights at speed

Investors and investment managers make decisions based on the most accurate, up-to-date information possible. For Azimut Group, information sourced through financial data vendors such as Bloomberg and Reuters provided only part of the data that the group required.

“We looked to collect information from a range of different providers,” explains Simone, “then analyse it to develop a predictive algorithm that could work faster than an advisor stationed at the terminal. We set ourselves the challenge to try to manipulate that data to add new insights into our matrix, so that every one of our branches across the world can see risk information about the funds in real-time.”

“We compared Google Cloud Platform’s performance with our previous cloud provider, and saw huge benefits of switching to Google. For me, the key performance issue is scaling. With Google Cloud Platform I know that I can increase and decrease my infrastructure quickly, when I need it.

The first cloud provider Azimut used to build its system struggled to scale quickly to meet different kinds of data challenges. “If we wanted to add more cores, that was fine,” says Simone. “But the previous cloud provider made it complicated to raise the amount of space in a database infrastructure and scale up to demand. Scaling up for more in-depth analysis would take a day, and our need was immediate.”

That’s why Azimut switched one year ago to Google Cloud Platform to run the 150 VMs on its risk analysis platform. “We compared Google Cloud Platform’s performance with our previous cloud provider, and saw huge benefits of switching to Google. For me, the key performance issue is scaling,” says Simone. “With Google Cloud Platform I know that I can increase and decrease my infrastructure quickly, when I need it. Instead of waiting a day to scale up infrastructure, we can request and add space to our database in a couple of minutes.”

The infrastructure of Azimut’s solution handles around 800TB of data per month, and Google’s global network of servers and high-speed connections ensure that it gets to where it’s most needed by the most direct route. Impressed by the speed, security and availability of Google Cloud Platform, Azimut has moved its intranet on to Google Cloud Platform, too, eliminating the need for staff to login with VPNs.

Driving ahead with Noovle

For Azimut, migrating the risk management dashboard is the latest of many Google product collaborations with cloud consultancy Noovle. “Everything started five years ago,” says Simone, “when Noovle assisted us in migrating to Gmail from our on-premise email solution. From G Suite to Google Cloud Platform, we’ve had a great relationship. Noovle provides consultancy services, support for mobility, and external advisors who work on our premises, such as when they trained us how to broadcast our meetings on Google Hangouts. As an independent company, we know we can trust them for transparent advice. All they care about is the best way to get a job done and to help us reach our goals.”

New app, new customers

In a business case comparison, Google Cloud Platform cost Azimut 35% less to run than the previous cloud provider. Now the group is building a major new mobile application on Google App Engine to be released in 2018.

“The new mobile application will allow customers to trade directly, without human advisors, by proposing different investment solutions depending on targets the customers set,” says Simone. “So if a customer aims to make money with investments, they enter their relevant personal information and we carry out the necessary regulatory checks and suggest what they could buy. The entire project will be based on Google Cloud Platform, so customers can control their investments through the app while we manage the fund, using Google Cloud Spanner on the backend.”

One thing is certain to be top of mind – the global supply chain challenges facing the world today. It’s affecting every business across every industry, from common household items that once filled store shelves and are now on backorder, to essential goods and services like food and medical treatments, which are at risk. Even cloud-native companies are making changes to ensure they have the insights, equipment, and other assets they need to continue serving customers.

We are proud to work with SAP on many initiatives that are driving results for our customers and helping them run more intelligent and sustainable companies. I’d like to highlight three of these important initiatives and how they are helping address global supply chain challenges.

Enabling more efficient migrations of critical workloads


We know a key barrier to entry in the cloud is the ability to easily migrate from on-premises environments. Our cloud provides a safe path to help companies including Johnson Controls, PayPal, and Kaeser Compressor to digitize and solve large, complex business problems, reduce costs, scale without cycles of investment, and gain access to key services and capabilities that can unlock value and enable growth.

Singapore-based shipping company Ocean Network Express (ONE) has become more agile by running their mission-critical SAP workloads on Google Cloud and using our data analytics to improve operational efficiency and make faster decisions. They have gone from an on-premises data warehouse solution that would take a full day loading data from SAP S/4HANA, to using our BigQuery solution that delivers business insights in minutes.

Since The Home Depot moved its critical SAP workloads to Google Cloud, the company has been able to shorten the time it takes to prepare a supply chain use case from 8 hours to 5 minutes by using BigQuery to analyze large volumes of internal and external data. This helps improve forecast accuracy and more effectively replenish inventory by being able to create a new plan when circumstances change unexpectedly with demand or a supplier.

Accelerating cloud benefits through RISE and LiveMigration


At Google Cloud, we have dedicated programs to help migrate SAP and other mission-critical workloads to our cloud with our Cloud Acceleration Program for SAP.

Many large manufacturers have taken advantage of RISE with SAP to forge a secure, proven path to our cloud, including Energizer Holdings Inc., a leading manufacturer and distributor of primary batteries, portable lights, and auto care products. Energizer has turned to RISE with SAP on Google Cloud to power its move to SAP S/4HANA. The company wants to automate essential business processes, improve customer service, and boost innovation. It had been using a private cloud solution but needed to gain flexibility while better containing costs.

“SAP S/4HANA for central finance will help us automate essential business processes, improve customer service, and fuel innovation that grows our company’s leadership position globally. We selected RISE with SAP to begin our journey to SAP S/4HANA and maintain the freedom and flexibility to move at our own pace,” said Energizer Chief Information Officer Dan McCarthy.

Another example is global automotive distributor Inchcape, which moved its mission-critical sales, marketing, finance, and operations systems and data to Google Cloud. With its diverse data sets now in a single, secure cloud platform, Inchcape is applying Google Cloud AI and ML capabilities to manage and analyze its data, automate operations, and ultimately transform the car ownership experience for millions.

“Google Cloud’s close relationship with SAP and its strong technical expertise in this space were a big pull for us,” said Mark Dearnley, Chief Digital Officer at Inchcape. “Ultimately, we wanted a headache-free RISE with SAP implementation and to unlock value for auto makers and consumers in all our regions, while continuing to have the choice and flexibility to modernize our 150-year old business in a way that works for us.”

A new intelligence layer for all SAP Google Cloud customers


When moving mission-critical workloads to the cloud, companies not only need to migrate safely, they also need to quickly realize value, which we enable with Google Cloud Cortex Framework — a layer of intelligence that integrates with SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP).
