Founded in 1877, the FNM Group is Italy’s second largest railway company, operating in the Lombardy region. With 700,000 passengers a day, the core business remains with railway operations, but in recent years the FNM Group has redefined itself as a mobility service provider rather than just a public transport operator, with transport solutions like car-sharing platforms in parts of the country disconnected from the main railway lines. As part of this evolution, in 2016, FNM Group initiated a new strategy to overhaul its technology and build a platform that could support its ambitious, new direction.
“We needed an IT system that could rapidly adapt to the new market requirements we are planning to address,” says Augusto de Castro, Director of Human Resources, Organization, and IT at FNM Group. “To achieve this goal, we decided to modernize our information system and move to a cloud-based infrastructure, so we started testing various solutions. For us, the best came from Google.”
Collaborative office productivity
Since 2005, the FNM Group had used SAP Business Suite for its platform, using on-premises servers to manage its technology and database solutions. By 2016, when the group expanded its horizons, the on-premises infrastructure was showing its age and limitations. In addition, FNM Group office productivity tools limited workers’ mobility and flexibility. The company decided that a cloud-based solution was the most economical and effective infrastructure for its new innovation-focused strategy, but also wanted to continue the high-quality service it received from SAP.
In April 2017, FNM Group teamed up with Innext, a leading Italian consultancy and Google Cloud Premier Partner, to help transition to the cloud. After taking the time to assess specific needs at FNM Group, Innext supported the company’s decision to start the project with a migration to G Suite, replacing the existing email and office productivity platform. With help from Innext, FNM Group provided its workers with new tools such as Gmail, cloud-based storage on Google Drive, and fast, effective collaboration with Google Hangouts. As well as technical help, Innext brought a whole change management program designed to help FMN workers take full advantage of the new platform. “One of our top goals in any project is the adoption of the G Suite platform,” says Andrea Servili, Co-founder and Partner at Innext.
Cloud-based enterprise solutions with SAP HANA and SAP S/4HANA
While defining the G Suite migration, Innext and FNM Group began looking for an infrastructure solution. The timing was perfect. Earlier in the year, Google announced that SAP HANA and SAP S/4HANA, the latest software from SAP, would be able to run on Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Running on Google Compute Engine instances, Google Cloud Storage for backups, and Google Virtual Private Cloud as a networking solution, FNM Group can continue to use the enterprise platform of its choice along with all the advantages of Google cloud technology. By July, 2018, FNM Group plans to have fully migrated to SAP HANA and SAP S/4HANA on GCP and have its 1,200 employees using G Suite.
“SAP HANA and SAP S/4HANA on Google Cloud Platform and G Suite will make our employees much more mobile,” says Augusto. “They can access the system through a web browser if they have to, so they’re not tied to a local physical interface.”
Building a platform to last
With Innext and SAP HANA and SAP S/4HANA on GCP, FNM Group is building an enterprise infrastructure that can handle the demands of its traditional public transport operations and adapt to the company’s more innovative activities, such as car-sharing or energy management. By the time the migration is complete in 2018, FNM Group will save on infrastructure costs by only paying for the resources it uses with flexible pricing from Google. G Suite lets the company’s workers stay mobile and effective, and with Google Compute Engine, FNM Group can easily scale its infrastructure up or down to meet whatever challenges it faces in the future. Meanwhile, Google Cloud Storage helps ensure that FNM Group will have a highly secure, reliable backup solution. Once the migration is complete, FNM Group can start exploring other ways in which Google can help its business, especially with data analytic products like Google BigQuery or Google Cloud AI machine learning tools. Whatever the challenge, FNM Group knows that it can rely on Innext and Google to provide the right solution.
“Our main priority is to shut down our on-premises infrastructure and take advantage of the benefits of the cloud,” says Augusto. “Google Cloud Platform and SAP HANA and SAP S/4HANA will help us reduce our maintenance costs and improve our flexibility. I think we will spend less time continually upgrading our infrastructure and more time improving our productivity.”
Revolutionizing Cloud Computing: Introducing G2 VMs with NVIDIA L4 GPUs

Organizations across industries are looking to AI to turn troves of data into intelligence, powered by the latest advances in generative AI. Today, we’re introducing G2, the newest addition to the Compute Engine GPU family in Google Cloud. G2 is the industry’s first cloud VM powered by the newly announced NVIDIA L4 Tensor Core GPU, and is purpose-built for large inference AI workloads like generative AI. G2 delivers cutting-edge performance-per-dollar for AI inference workloads that run on GPUs in the cloud. By switching from NVIDIA A10G GPUs to G2 instances with L4 GPUs, organizations can lower their production infrastructure costs up to 40%. We also found that customers switching from NVIDIA T4 GPUs to L4 GPUs can achieve 2x-4x better performance. As a universal GPU offering, G2 instances also help accelerate other workloads, offering significant performance improvements on HPC, graphics, and video transcoding. Currently in private preview, G2 VMs are both powerful and flexible, and scale easily from one up to eight GPUs.

NVIDIA L4 GPUs with Ada Lovelace Architecture
G2 machine families enable machine learning customers to run their production infrastructure in the cloud for a variety of applications such as language models, image classification, object detection, automated speech recognition, and language translation. Built on the Ada Lovelace architecture with fourth-generation Tensor Cores, the NVIDIA L4 GPU provides up to 30 TFLOPS of performance for FP32, and 242 TFLOPs for FP16. Newly added FP8 support, on top of existing INT8, BFLOAT16 and TF32 capabilities, makes the L4 ideal for ML inference.
With the latest third-generation RT Cores and DLSS 3.0 technology, G2 instances are also great for graphics-intensive workloads such as rendering and remote workstations when paired with NVIDIA RTX Virtual Workstation. NVIDIA L4 provides 3x video encoding and decoding performance, and adds new AV1 hardware-encoding capabilities. For example, G2 can enable gaming customers running game engines such as Unreal and Unity with modern graphics cards to run real-time applications. Likewise, media and entertainment customers that need GPU-enabled virtual workstations can use the L4 to create photo-realistic, high-resolution 3D content for movies, games, and AR/VR experiences using applications such as Autodesk Maya or 3D Studio Max.

HSBC Looks to Google Cloud to Transform Banking
HSBC, a global bank that is a central part of global commerce with a presence in 67 countries, serving 38 million customers ranging from individuals to small businesses to corporations and governments, and having over $2.5 trillion assets in its balance sheet, had a vision of being a cloud first company and wanted to transform the banking experience for its customers.
The bank wanted to glean valuable insights from its huge data asset of about 100 petabytes and wanted to use those insights to manage its business better. What it needed was a managed service with elastic capability so that HSBC can focus on the data science and management, which enables better customer experience.
For many years HSBC had, like most large corporations, tried to build its own data centers, provision the infrastructure, and run it. However, to realize its ambition of focussing on customer experience, the bank decided to partner with Google Cloud.
However, the journey wasn’t an easy one. Being a globally systemically important financial institution, it had to convince regulators across the world that moving customer data to the cloud is a good thing. Towards that end, it formed a joint team to work through all the challenges and created a cloud framework for banking describing the controls needed.
The results have been quite stunning. Able to calculate the global liquidity for a country in minutes rather than hours, run better financial crime analytics with speeds that are 10 times faster with a higher level of precision and accuracy have been some of the benefits that the bank has derived.

Episode #6: ‘Novel challenges in security with multicloud’
In the sixth episode of the series, we chatted with Dr. Anton Chuvakin, Security Advisor at Office of the CISO at Google Cloud, about how security leaders and architects are shifting away from traditional security models, which are increasingly insufficient for multicloud environments.
As more organizations adopt multicloud approaches, the question of how to maintain security in these complex environments and the increasing burden on SecOps teams is top of mind. As Dr. Chuvakin noted, the challenges in the cloud facing more traditional teams range from types of telemetry and logs to volumes and lack of clarity on detection use cases. However, these issues intensify when extended to include multiple clouds, where learning how to do something on one provider may be completely different on another.
“If you end up multicloud, you need to know public cloud and how it works at a better level than you would if you’re going to a single provider. Just like if you’re trying to repair three cars, you need to first learn how to repair cars. You need to have more cloud knowledge to do multicloud, not less. You need to have more powerful superpowers in the public cloud computing area because you can’t just learn one provider and call it a day.” — Dr. Anton Chuvakin, Security Advisor at Office of the CISO at Google Cloud
During the discussion, he offered three tips for tackling multicloud security:
- Learn cloud more, not less if you’re going multicloud. Multicloud requires more cloud knowledge because you can’t learn a single provider and call it a day. You’ll need to understand the differences in order to be able to secure multiple cloud environments.
- Focus on learning cloud identity management and how it compares to your traditional identity management service functions. Start with identifying the differences and similarities in what you see in one cloud and then continue with other clouds you use.
- Explore where your threat areas change in cloud environments when you plan detection and response activities to understand if your detection is covered across clouds.

More than 200 million Evernote users now more securely store billions of notes and attachments—the equivalent of roughly 10 copies of every modern book ever published.
