The Future of Workloads: Google Cloud’s Purpose-Built Infrastructure Evolution

For far too long, cloud infrastructure has focused on raw speeds and feeds of building blocks such as VMs, containers, networks, and storage. Today, Moore’s law is slowing, and the burden of picking the right combination of infrastructure components increasingly falls on IT.
At Google Cloud we are committed to removing that burden. We’ve engineered golden paths from silicon to the console, with a recipe of purpose-built infrastructure, prescriptive architectures, and an ecosystem to deliver workload-optimized infrastructure. And at this year’s Google Cloud Next, we made some exciting new announcements across key workloads.
In this post, we will put the new Google Cloud releases and capabilities in the context of popular workloads: From AI/ML to high performance computing and data analytics, to SAP, VMware, and mainframes.
Powering AI/ML workloads
No single technology has the potential to drive more transformation than AI and ML. At Next, we announced several new AI-based services: Translation Hub and DocAI services, and the OpenXLA Project, an open-source ecosystem of ML compiler technologies co-developed by a consortium of industry leaders.
To build these innovative services, you also need a powerful infrastructure platform. Today, we announced the following additions to our compute offerings:
- Cloud TPU v4 Pods – Now in General Availability (GA), Google’s advanced machine learning infrastructure is based on the world’s largest publicly available ML hub in Oklahoma and offers up to 9 exaflops of peak aggregate compute. Developers and researchers can use TPU v4 to train increasingly sophisticated models to power workloads such as large-scale natural language processing (NLP), recommendation systems, and computer vision algorithms in a cost effective and sustainable way. In June 2022, Cloud TPU v4 recorded the fastest training times on five MLPerf 2.0 benchmarks, with up to 80% better performance and up to 50% lower cost of training than the next best available alternative.
- A2 Ultra GPU VM instances – Now GA, you can use A2 Ultra GPU VM instances with Compute Engine, Google Kubernetes Engine and Deep Learning VMs. A2 Ultra GPUs have the largest and fastest GPU memory of the Google Cloud portfolio and are optimized for large AI/ML and HPC workloads with use cases such as AI assistants, recommendation systems, and autonomous driving. Powered by NVIDIA A100 Tensorcore GPU with 80 GBs of GPU memory, A2 Ultra delivers 25% higher throughput on inference and 2x higher performance on HPC simulations than original A2 machine shapes.

Boost HPC and data-intensive workloads
Customers rely on Google Cloud to help them run data-intensive workloads such as HPC and Hadoop. The new C3 machine series (currently in Preview) is the first in the public cloud to include the new 4th Gen Intel Xeon processor and Google’s custom Intel Infrastructure Processing Unit that enables 200Gbps, low-latency networking. You can pair the C3 with Hyperdisk (currently in Private Preview), our new generation block storage, which offers 80% higher IOPS per vCPU for high-end database management system (DBMS) workloads when compared to other hyperscalers. Data workloads such as Hadoop and databases may no longer need oversized compute instances to benefit from high IOPS. Learn more about Hyperdisk in breakout session MOD206.
Enable new streaming experiences
Media and entertainment customers want streaming optimized workloads that build on our innovation in edge and our global network. Here are some new developments to support streaming use cases:
- Cloud CDN, our original content delivery networking offering, now offers Dynamic compression to reduce the size of responses transferred from the edge to a client, significantly helping to accelerate page load times and reduce egress traffic.
- Media CDN, introduced earlier this year, now supports the Live Stream API to ingest and package source content into HTTP-Live Streaming and DASH formats for optimized live streaming. We are also enabling two new developer-friendly integrations in Preview for Media CDN: Dynamic Ad Insertion with Google Ad Manager, which provides customized video ad placements, and third-party Ad Insertion using our Video Stitcher API for personalized ad placement. With these options, content producers can introduce additional monetization and personalization opportunities to their streaming services.
- For advanced customization, we are introducing the Preview of Network Actions for Media CDN, a fully managed serverless solution based on open-source web assembly that enables programmability for customers to deploy their own code directly in the request/response path at the edge.
With Media CDN, customers like Paramount+ are able to deliver a high-quality experience on the same Google infrastructure we’ve tested and tuned to serve YouTube’s 2 billion users globally.

Bringing Google Cloud to your workloads
For customers in regulated markets and in countries with strict sovereignty laws, Google Cloud has a spectrum of offerings to help them achieve varying degrees of sovereignty. Sovereign Controls by T-Systems is now GA, and Local Controls by S3NS, the Thales-Google partnership, is now available in Preview. You can expect more region and market announcements in the coming months. And for the most stringent sovereignty needs, we offer Google Distributed Cloud Hosted for a disconnected Google Cloud footprint deployed at the customer’s chosen site.
We are also expanding functionality for existing offerings to give you even more options to run your cloud where you want, how you want.
- Anthos, our cloud-centric container platform to run modern apps anywhere consistently at scale, now has a more robust user interface and an upgraded fleet management experience. Create, update, and reconfigure your Anthos clusters the same way from one dashboard or command-line interface, wherever your clusters run. New fleet management capabilities let you manage growing fleets of container clusters across clouds, on-premises, and at the edge and for different use cases (isolate dev from prod, apply fleet-specific security controls, enforce configurations fleet-wide). And we are pleased to announce the GA of virtual machine support on Anthos clusters for retail edge environments. - Google Distributed Cloud Edge GPU-Optimized Config, is now GA in server-rack form factors powered by 12 Nvidia T4 GPUs. GDC Edge is designed to enable low-latency and high-performance hybrid workloads as a complement to your primary Google Cloud environment or as an independent edge deployment. We’re seeing early adoption by customers and partners for workloads such as augmented reality and retail self-checkout. In addition, software partners such as 66degrees are taking advantage of GDC Edge GPU optimization to provide real-time insights on in-store product availability, while Ipsotek is using machine intelligence at the edge to perform crowd and foot-traffic analysis in large locations such as malls, airports and railway stations. Infrastructure building blocks for cloud-first workloads
For most new projects, developers prefer them to be cloud-first optimized workloads, and nearly half of all developers use containers today. Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) is the most automated and scalable container management service on the market today, and when you use GKE Autopilot, developers can get started faster than other leading cloud providers. At Next ‘22, we’re excited to unveil:
- A new workshop to help you discover how to unlock efficiency and innovation with a GKE Autopilot — sign up to get started.
- A new security posture management dashboard in GKE that provides opinionated guidance on Kubernetes security along with bundled tools to expertly help improve the security posture of your Kubernetes clusters and workloads.
When building scalable web applications or running background jobs that require lightweight batch processing, developers are increasingly turning to serverless technologies. We’re helping developers choose serverless with numerous updates to Cloud Run, our managed serverless compute service.
- With new Cloud Run integrations, Cloud Run and Google Cloud services work together smoothly. For example, configuring domains with a Load Balancer or connecting to a Redis Cache is now as easy as a single click, with more scenarios on the way.
- Cloud Run customized health checks for services is now available in Preview, providing user-defined HTTP and TCP Startup probes at the container level. This capability allows Cloud Run users to define criteria as to when their application has started and is ready to start serving traffic, and is particularly useful for applications that might require additional startup time on their first initialization.
- To make continuous deployment easier for our customers, we added an integration between Cloud Deploy, our fully managed continuous deployment service, and Cloud Run. With this integration in place, you can do continuous deployment through Cloud Deploy directly to Cloud Run, with one-click approvals and rollbacks, enterprise security and audit, and built-in delivery metrics. You also need confidence in the building blocks that make up your workloads from the outset. To help get you started, we introduced Software Delivery Shield, which provides a comprehensive suite of tools offering a fully managed, end-to-end solution that helps protect your software supply chain. - Cloud Workstations, currently in Preview, provides fully-managed development environments built to meet the needs of security-sensitive enterprises. With Cloud Workstations, developers can access secure, fast, and customizable development environments via a browser anytime and anywhere, with consistent configurations and customizable tooling. - A new partnership with JetBrains provides fully managed Jetbrains IDEs as part of Cloud Workstations. This integration can give developers access to several popular IDEs with minimal management overhead for their admin teams.

Open source and open standards are an important part of building applications. With that, we are excited to announce that Google has joined the Eclipse Adoptium Working Group, a consortium of leaders in the Java community working to establish a higher quality, developer-centric standard for Java distributions. Also, we are making Eclipse Temurin available across Google Cloud products and services. Eclipse Temurin provides Java developers a higher quality developer experience and more opportunities to create integrated, enterprise-focused solutions, with the openness they deserve.
Pioneering new technology with Web3 optimized infrastructure
It’s incredible to see the energy in Web3 right now and the focus on developing the broader benefits, use cases, and core capabilities of blockchain. We are helping customers with scalability, reliability, security, and data, so they can spend the bulk of their time on innovation in the Web3 space — unlocking deep user value and building the next app to attract a billion users to the ecosystem.

Lift and transform traditional workloads
Not all workloads were born in the cloud — or have completed their journey to it. Google Cloud offers a variety of programs and capabilities to help optimize traditional workloads for a new cloud era, regardless of whether you’re looking to migrate it as-is, do light optimizations, or fully modernize and transform:
- Migration Center – Now in Preview. For organizations looking to migrate to the cloud and transform their businesses, Migration Center can reduce the complexity, time, and cost by providing an integrated migration and modernization experience. It brings together our assessment, planning, migration, and modernization tooling in one centralized location with a shared data platform so you can proceed faster, more intelligently, and more easily through your journey. - Google Cloud VMware Engine – Google Cloud is the first VMware partner to market with VMware Cloud Universal support, simplifying the migration of on-premises VMware VMs to VMware Engine in the cloud. With a cloud market-leading 99.99% availability SLA in a single site, VMware Engine is helping large organizations like Carrefour move to Google Cloud.
- Dual Run for Google Cloud – Now in Preview, this first-of-its-kind solution helps eliminate many of the common risks associated with mainframe modernizations by letting customers simultaneously run workloads on their existing mainframes and their modernized version on Google Cloud. This means customers can perform real-time testing and quickly gather data on performance and stability with no disruption to their business. Once satisfied that the performance of the two systems is functionally equivalent, the customer can make the Google Cloud environment the system of record, and operate the existing mainframe system as needed, typically as a backup. - Google Cloud Workload Manager – Now in Preview for SAP workloads, and available in the Google Cloud console, Workload Manager provides automated analysis of your enterprise systems on Google Cloud to help continuously improve system quality, reliability, and performance. Google Cloud Workload Manager evaluates your SAP workloads by detecting deviations from documented standards and best practices to help proactively prevent issues, continuously analyze workloads, and simplify system troubleshooting.

Protect all your workloads
The foundation of any workload is storage, and this year we expanded the number of supported regions with our Cloud Storage dual-region buckets (GA), so you can ensure that your workloads are protected. In the event of an outage, your application can easily access the data in the alternate region. You can add Turbo replication (GA) with your dual-region buckets. Turbo replication is backed by a 15-minute Recovery Point Objective (RPO) SLA.
Also, we recently announced Google Cloud’s Backup and DR Service (GA). This service is a fully integrated data-protection solution for critical applications and databases that lets you centrally manage data protection and disaster recovery policies directly within the Google Cloud console, and fully protect databases and applications with a few mouse clicks.

Migrate, observe, and secure network traffic
We also announced many new capabilities and enhancements to the Cloud Networking portfolio that help customers migrate, modernize, secure, and observe workloads traveling to and in Google Cloud:
- Private Service Connect helps simplify migrations by giving more control to users and integrations with 5 new partners.
- Network Intelligence Center can monitor the network for you with enhanced capabilities like the Performance Dashboard that will give you latency visibility between Google Cloud and the Internet.
- We expanded our Cloud Firewall product line and introduced two new tiers: Cloud Firewall Essentials and Cloud Firewall Standard.

Optimize costs
Our customers’ workloads also require technical and commercial options that can deliver the best return on their investments. Here are some new enhancements that can help:
- Flex CUDs – GA coming soon, Flexible Committed Use Discounts help you save up to 46% off on-demand Compute Engine VM pricing, in exchange for a one- or three-year commitment. Like standard CUDs, you can apply Flex CUDs across projects within the same billing account, to VMs of different sizes, and across operating systems. Learn more.
- Batch – Now GA, Batch is a fully managed service that helps you run batch jobs easily, reliably, and at scale. Without having to install any additional software, Batch dynamically and efficiently manages resource provisioning, scheduling, queuing, and execution, freeing you up to focus on analyzing results. There’s no charge for using Batch, and you only pay for the resources used to complete the tasks.

Optimize for sustainability
Any new workloads you develop should have the smallest possible carbon footprint. Google Cloud Carbon Footprint helps you measure, report, and reduce your cloud carbon emissions, and is now GA. Since introducing Carbon Footprint last year, we added features that cover Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, and provided role-based access to other users such as sustainability teams. Active Assist’s carbon emissions estimates related to removing unattended projects are also now GA. Bit Capital Rolls Out a Digital Financial Solution in Under 3 Months and at 2/3 the Cost

In the past few years, a series of new technologies and regulatory changes has been transforming Brazil’s financial industry. The concept of blockchain added security and agility to financial transactions. The open banking system being deployed by the country’s Central Bank (BC) allows for platform integration and data sharing -with the user’s consent- between financial institutions. Recently, the launch of Pix, also by the BC, has shaken the market by creating a new payment method that is instant, free for individuals and 24/7.
Since 2018, the startup Bit Capital has been working on the development of 100%-digital financial solutions in the cloud to help its clients adapt to this new scenario in a convenient way, without the need to build an infrastructure for that or hiring different providers. Pix was not the exception.
In less than 3 months, the team was able to build and go live with a solution that can be used by both direct participants (i.e. those with banking licenses granted by BC) and indirect participants (i.e. companies depending on direct participants to offer payments on Pix) through Bit Capital’s platform.
Besides this differential, Pix and the startup’s other solutions are based on blockchain and Google Cloud’s cloud, ensuring greater security, scalability and availability for customers and allowing for an easy integration between Bit Capital’s platform’s solutions and those from other companies.

A robust structure to handle Pix’s high demand
Bit Capital was established with a certain urgency to develop its platform. The idea was well-developed and customers were interested. The fast deployment of Google Cloud’s tools was one of the main factors that attracted the company to use it as a basis for its infrastructure.
“We managed to deliver everything we have today in Google Cloud with a small team. That was another challenge: being able to grow with a few people,” says Juliano Souza, the startup’s head of IT infrastructure. “We sought other cloud partners, but they had a steep curve. We chose Google Cloud because we needed quick, quality scaling.”
The same thing happened when they built the solution for Pix, despite the specific challenges involved. The BC had performance requirements that led the company to spend some time experimenting until they reached the best suite of tools to meet those requirements. The startup wanted to create a unique architecture that could help both large and small customers and be integrated to the platform’s other microservices.
With the support from Google Cloud’s team to answer doubts and make the best decisions, the solution was built in a few months, at a cost about two-thirds lower than other providers.
The solution’s architecture is based on apps running in Docker in Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), with interconnected microservices. The blockchain system runs on Compute Engine, its rows are managed in Pub/Sub and Dataflow, and persistent data, in Cloud SQL. Cloud Interconnect is used for the connection with BC. Cloud KMS and Secrets Management store the company’s pre-credentials. All of this is supported by Cloud Load Balancing for load balancing and autoscaling.
According to the team, GKE was essential for the solution’s success. Using infrastructure as code in the tool made uploading of a group of microservices significantly easier. Developers are able to help set up this environment, which has helped spread the DevOps culture in the team. Besides orchestrating and integrating apps, GKE also provides an elastic structure to handle demand peaks and visibility to monitor internal components.

Nowadays, the solution’s environment has 20 clusters with over 1,500 pods – 250GB in data per month, providing a robust structure to support a service involving periods of intense demand such as Black Friday.
Ease to monitor, fix and improve
Just 10 days after Pix’s official launch date, the company had its first test: Black Friday. This allowed a major e-commerce customer to test the scale and see the success of the architecture that had been built. “It worked great regarding what the cloud could deliver. And we found what we needed to fix very quickly. Operations [formerly Stackdriver], in particular Cloud Trace, showed us clearly what needed to be done to improve performance,” Souza explains.
Using Operations added reliability by putting deliveries into production. Checking Cloud Trace to see if there were any performance issues and the exact point where they were happening became routine for Bit Capital’s developers. Google Cloud’s security tools and Google Safety Center provided the resources needed to monitor and secure the environment, with automatic data encryption at rest and in transit.

The easy service monitoring and management accelerates product and technology development because the team no longer needs to worry about infrastructure. Automated management allows professionals to spend more time on new projects and the company’s business. Also, the deployment of services in a Google Cloud multi-region impacts on customer experience, providing high availability for their solutions.
In the coming months, Bit Capital aims to ramp up service usage and the creation of new projects in Google Cloud by adding more customers to Pix’s solution and Banking as a Service (BaaS) solutions. Anthos will be incorporated to the tool suite to make it easier to connect apps with the customers’ on-prem environments. And the deployment of open banking has the potential to be a business driver for the company.
“We joke that we’re already doing open banking, because we have various connections with different providers, which allows us to offer an integrated solution,” says Francesco Miolo, the startup’s CFO. “With the arrival of the new regulations, something we are waiting for since we started out, we will be able, through our platform, to take our customers to the open finance ecosystem, enabling the development of disruptive business models.”
Transport Platform’s Richly-detailed Geospatial Data Allows Commuters to Track Buses in Real-time!

Vinayak Bhavnani, Co-Founder and CTO of India-based bus transport technology company Chalo, shares how Google Maps Platform is used to improve visibility for commuters and bus operators across India by visualizing geospatial data.
Effective public transport networks contribute to the local economy and help make cities safe, pleasant, and sustainable. In India, buses make up around 90% of the public transport offering, but when you talk to the people who ride them every day, you find that there’s a lot of room for improvement. Heavy traffic means there are rarely any fixed schedules and it’s impossible to know exactly when your bus is coming. We’ve found that people tend to wait at a bus stop for up to 30 minutes a day, which creates a lot of frustration and wasted time.
When we founded Chalo, our aim was to make the daily city commute a more positive experience. Reliability is synonymous with visibility: when you know exactly when the bus is coming, you can plan your day better. If you’re in your office, for example, and see the next bus is in 10 minutes, you can be at the stop at the exact time it arrives, instead of waiting around. To enable this, we base our solutions on richly-detailed geospatial data provided by Google Maps Platform.
Eliminating wait times and increasing revenue with geospatial data
In India, bus passengers tend to have fewer resources. The Chalo App, which can be downloaded for free, allows them to see exactly where their bus is on its route and when it will arrive at their nearest stop. They also tend to be late adopters of mobile technology, meaning we had to create an interface that was user-friendly, reassuring and adapted to all age groups and backgrounds. One of the main reasons we opted for Google Maps Platform is that it’s very present in India and other emerging markets and is familiar to our users, which inspires trust. At the same time, we like the fact that Google Maps Platform provides rich geospatial data while being simple to implement and work with. We use the Geocoding API, Reverse Geocoding, and the Directions API to enable location search and provide directions.
We also worked with MediaAgility to identify the Google Maps Platform products most suited to our needs and the best practices to be followed. This helped to ensure that our business objectives could be met efficiently.
The Chalo App also enables digital ticketing, alongside the Chalo Card, a payment card for those who don’t own a smartphone. India, like the rest of the world, is gradually moving away from cash payments, but the public transport system is proving slow to catch up, meaning people still must have cash in hand when they board the bus. Digital ticketing not only makes commuting more convenient, it also helps protect passengers, drivers and conductors during the COVID-19 health crisis by limiting physical contact.
Chalo also offers solutions aimed at bus operators that help them improve their services and their bottom line. In major Indian cities, buses are run by a combination of public and private agencies and small private individual bus operators, with the majority of the latter only operating one or two buses. The market is very fragmented and there’s not much incentive for bus operators to invest in infrastructure or customer experience – especially when they have little to no visibility on where their fleet is at a given time, how many kilometers it travels in a day, or how much money it takes.
The Chalo dashboard provides operators with a map-based real-time overview of bus locations, alongside scheduling features and route, ticketing, and passenger statistics. Geospatial intelligence and insight into passenger demand enable operators to explore new avenues of revenue and adapt routes and services to passenger needs. Operators who’ve partnered with Chalo report an average improvement of 10% to 30% of their bus fleet operations.
Chalo is currently powering about 100 million rides a month on 15,000 buses in 37 cities. We’d like to see the number of rides increase tenfold over the next few years. To do that, we’re looking to broaden our offer and expand to other parts of the country and across international borders. A pilot is underway in Bangkok, and we’re considering expansion into South-East Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Having access to detailed geospatial data anywhere in the world via Google Maps Platform, without having to make any major investments or changes to our technology stack, will make this considerably easier.
At the same time, we’re exploring artificial intelligence and machine learning to improve the accuracy of our scheduling features and we’re introducing video-based solutions for people-counting on buses. Our aim is to continually improve our offering and optimize our services. We’re looking forward to working closely with Google to make that happen.

The insurance landscape in India has seen significant changes in recent years with the adoption of new technology. As one of the major insurance providers in the country, ICICI Prudential Life Insurance has aimed to lead in this transformation journey. “There has been a data explosion across India over the past few years, together with a high mobile penetration rate. Today, about 60% of our customers approach us via mobile, for example, which was certainly not the case before,” says Alpesh Karnik, SVP, IT, at ICICI Life Insurance.
Consumer expectations have also evolved, with easier access to information and online services. “Consumers today are more informed on the importance of investing in insurance products, so there’s much more of a pull factor when it comes to sales, but they also want to be able to get these products quickly and easily,” adds Alpesh. To meet the demands of these consumers, ICICI Prudential Life Insurance realized it needed to make its processes even faster and more efficient. Looking to upgrade its infrastructure, the company turned to Google Cloud.

Serving customers better by speeding up processes with Google Cloud
ICICI Prudential Life Insurance’s distributors were already using tablets to input customer data faster and more efficiently, but many of the company’s solutions still required a team at the back end to manually sift through documents for approval. This meant that customers needed to wait five or six hours, or sometimes until the next working day, to know if their documents were approved or needed revision.
That all changed after partnering with Google Cloud Premier Partner Searce to take advantage of its AI/ML powered automated document processing product Recognic, which is built on Google Cloud. Developed using the optical character recognition (OCR) capabilities of Cloud Vision, Recognic reads, understands, and validates documents at scale, enabling organizations that handle massive amounts of paperwork to digitize these documents and then accurately store and index them.

“In the case of ICICI Prudential, the biggest benefit of using Recognic and Vision API is that it eliminates the initial waiting time, which can result in drop-offs. Now customers can know immediately whether their documents are sufficient, or if they need to revise or submit any others,” Alpesh adds.
Alpesh explains that if the details on the application form match the documents provided, the case doesn’t need to go to the underwriter for further checks and can go directly to policy issuance. “Google Cloud has cut down the middle- and back-office work, leading to a 30% increase in the number of applications we can process in the same time span without the need for additional resources.”
ICICI Prudential Life Insurance is also working with Searce to build deep learning models into Recognic so that it can overcome template barriers and input data from a variety of forms. This is particularly helpful for financial and medical documents underwriting because unlike a passport or driving license, financial documents have a higher structural complexity.
As customer data becomes more important in the work of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, so does protecting it, and the company is taking every measure to safeguard the security and privacy of its customers’ information. “Details of customers’ contactability are automatically removed by Google Cloud after processing is complete. This step in the workflow gives us the confidence that data is not stored at any level of the optical character recognition process,” says Alpesh.
Partnering with the right teams for dedicated support
In achieving the best solution for its business goals, ICICI Prudential Life Insurance recognizes the importance of its decision to work with partners that truly understand the insurance business. “There are many intricacies involved in this business, and it’s clear that both Google Cloud and Searce really took the time to understand our underwriting processes before coming up with a solution,” says Alpesh. He adds that during the implementation process, all findings were well documented and queries were responded to quickly.
“We didn’t want to take any shortcuts deploying Recognic, but at the same time, we didn’t want to draw out the implementation process. The excellent support from both Google Cloud and Searce throughout the journey was reassuring for us as they were always thinking ahead.”
Future-proofing the organization through machine learning and AI
In the coming years, Alpesh foresees the insurance industry to be even more agile than it is today. “I doubt elaborate processes such as underwriting or operations checks will need to be done manually in the future. Everything will be done through machine learning and AI.” In light of this, ICICI Prudential Life Insurance is doing everything it can to prepare, as customers’ expectations are set to keep evolving. “We have to be prepared for the future, and I believe that with Google Cloud, we can do it.”

It has been seven years since Marc Andreesen’s famous article “Why Software is Eating the World” was published in the Wall Street Journal, and given the slow pace of change in many companies, some executives still may not be taking the threat of being “eaten” seriously enough.
Software, and platform business models based on software, have the potential to deliver powerful economic forces into virtually any company or industry. Every company has valuable assets—such as data, expertise or access to certain services or user bases—and most of these assets can be delivered via software. Once an asset is expressed as software in a modern way—that is, as an application programming interface (API)—it can be combined with other software to create new applications and digital experiences.
Benefits of this approach, just to name a few, include near-zero marginal cost to scale up APIs for new users or use cases; global reach for both partners using APIs and end users consuming the digital experiences those APIs power; and network effects triggered as more partners use a given company’s digital assets and spread its services into new markets and use cases.
Disruption by software-powered business models
In the last two decades we’ve seen individual companies and entire industries upended by these kinds of software-powered business models. Examples abound: Amazon and the retail industry, Netflix and movie rentals, Uber and ride hailing, Airbnb and hotels, etc. We’ve reached the point that these companies’ names have become verbs synonymous with being “eaten” by software (e.g., “Amazoned” or “Netflixed”).
The most famous examples of digital disruption involve digital natives, of course, but legacy businesses are leveraging software to evolve too. Brazilian retailer Magazine Luiza—a company I’ve worked with through my employer, Google Cloud’s Apigee team—has enjoyed enormous revenue growth and seen its stock soar, for example, as it has built out its digital platform capabilities and transitioned from a primarily brick-and-mortar model to an omnichannel one. The point is, whether a company has been in business five decades, five years or five months, software remains ravenous and is always looking for new companies and industries to “eat.”
Change in the face of serious threats
Facing this threat, how should corporate leadership respond? There are some excellent examples of CEOs who have galvanized their companies and led them through the massive, gut-wrenching change required to pivot in the face of a serious threat. A few of the biggest examples include:
- In 1995, it became apparent to Microsoft co-founder and then-CEO Bill Gates that the internet was “the most important single development to come along since the IBM PC,” and, if not embraced in haste, a threat to many of Microsoft’s businesses. In May of that year he published the “The Internet Tidal Wave” memo and focused all of Microsoft on adopting and building for the internet. Almost 20 years later, current Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella similarly made the bold decision to redirect the company for a cloud-first world.
- Facebook went public at $38 per share in May of 2012 but within months, stocks could be had for a little over half that. The concern? Facebook was a desktop-optimized website without a polished mobile presence, and by 2012, consumer attention had begun to accelerate towards mobile at a much higher rate than many initially predicted. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg reacted by not only proclaiming Facebook a mobile-first company, but also backing up that proclamation with action.
- Turning to another company I’ve worked with via Apigee, T-Mobile launched its highly visible “Uncarrier” campaign—which offers streamlined, customer-friendly plans and services—while also investing in and executing a new IT vision dedicated to ongoing digital transformation. T-Mobile execs have credited the technology effort, spearheaded by CEO John Legere, with helping the company to introduce new services and better service customers. T-Mobile’s market cap has more than doubled since Legere took over in 2012.
Keeping pace with changing customer needs
In the face of an existential threat, strong executive leadership is required to pivot the company to safety, as these examples attest. Digital transformationisn’t about deploying new technologies just to make an existing approach more efficient or to add a few new apps or features to the status quo; digital transformation is about keeping pace with changing customer needs by leveraging software platforms to continuously evolve how the business operates. This can be akin to turning an enormous ship—and a ship can’t turn very well without her captain, first mate, and other leaders showing the way.
Research supports this. A recent Deloitte survey, for example, found that over “80 percent of respondents from digitally maturing organizations say their leaders have sufficient knowledge and ability to lead the company’s digital strategy,” compared to only “22 percent of early-stage business respondents [who] have the same belief.” Similarly, Gartner research finds that CEOs are seeking a “deeper understanding of digital business” as they shift their focus from growth in general to how technology helps them attain it.
More recently, the onslaught of software devouring the world has been further accelerated by machine learning making everything smarter, voice interfaces changing how people interact with devices, and more. To keep pace, corporate leaders need to galvanize their companies to build and deploy software faster, make systems and data easily accessible inside and outside their companies, and improve digital experiences through not only machine learning but also constant data-driven iteration.
Seven years after Andreesen’s editorial, the pace of digital disruption is still increasing, and so is the need for strong leadership to pivot fully into digital. Over half of the Fortune 500 has been acquired, merged or declared bankruptcy since 2000—and the companies that survive in coming years won’t be those whose leaders treat technology as an IT concern rather than a core part of the business.

As Google Cloud has become a choice for more startups, I’ve experienced an increase in founders asking how they should think about cloud services. Though each startup is different and requirements may vary across industries and regions, I’ve seen a few core best practices that help startups to succeed—as well as several traps to avoid.
For example, If you go with a public cloud provider, you’re ideally not starting from ground zero like you would running your own data center, but it’s important not to introduce similar complexity in a virtualized environment. Just because you’re using public cloud infrastructure doesn’t mean you want to manage it.
Instead, you want to leverage platforms that abstract away complexity so your team can focus on delivering value to customers. That’s where serverless comes in. Serverless platforms are fully managed by the provider, offering automatic scaling for workloads, as well as provisioning, configuring, patching, and management of servers and clusters. Freed from these resource-intensive tasks, your technical talent can focus on the things that differentiate your business, not on IT curation.
This applies to not only running stateless applications, but also managing and analyzing data. You should be collecting data points about which features are most popular on your platform, what people are buying, the types of activities that help your customers get their jobs done, and so on. This information is essential to building and executing on a product roadmap that will serve your customers. However, it’s not enough to collect this data, you need to make your data accessible, secure, and easy for your team to analyze—so where do you run and host it?
On Google Cloud, this is where options like Spanner and Cloud SQL can play a large role, as can BigQuery for analysis. You won’t have to worry about standing up infrastructure or patching servers—you can just stream your data to our data management platforms, where it’s available whenever someone needs to run a query. By leveraging a serverless architecture, your startup can be data-driven without having to invest in the traditional complexity of database administration and management—and that can significantly change your playing field.
