Founded in Atlanta in 2011, Pindrop provides software and technology that uses machine learning, voice recognition, and behavioral analytics to help detect and prevent fraud in voice channels like AI-powered call centers and solve the long standing identity problem commonly encountered in customer care and contact center experiences. Demand for Pindrop’s technology has grown considerably over the past decade, as more organizations and people adopt voice as an interface for customer service, transactions, entertainment and more. As that demand has grown, safeguarding these voice interactions from fraud or authentication loops continues to be a unique challenge.

Now, with frictionless voice-driven customer experiences at an all-time high, cybersecurity is more critical than ever. More specifically, the partnership will help Pindrop scale its own businesses, and meet ever-growing customer needs in several ways.

First, Pindrop is bringing its SaaS platform to Google Cloud, enabling customers to deploy it at global scale, on secure, sustainable, and highly performant cloud infrastructure. Not only does this give Pindrop the ability to deliver secure voice interactions with low-latency, it also aligns with its mission to enable customer choice when selecting and implementing security technology. And for customers already operating on Google Cloud, getting started with Pindrop can be done directly within their cloud environment, now that the company is making its solutions available on Google Cloud Marketplace.

Second, Pindrop plans to offer its voice secure technology with Google Cloud’s Contact Center AI (CCAI) capabilities to develop new solutions that will enhance call center experiences. CCAI capabilities in understanding, augmenting, and ML-processing conversations allows companies to deliver interactions that are helpful and keep costs low. These capabilities alongside Pindrop’s authentication and anti-fraud solutions will enable the company with the tools and technologies needed to create the next evolution of frictionless experiences in a secure way.

Finally, building on top of Google Cloud will equip Pindrop with multicloud capabilities that will offer new channels to increase revenues through. Using technologies like Google Kubernetes Engine, frequently chosen by startups and tech companies, to quickly launch and scale new ML applications up or down will also support Pindrop’s growth as it adds to its suite of technologies.

We are excited to announce that as of April 1, 2021, Google Cloud VMware Engine is covered under the Google Cloud Business Associate Agreement (BAA), meaning it has achieved HIPAA compliance. Healthcare organizations can now migrate and run their HIPAA-compliant VMware workloads in a fully compatible VMware Cloud Verified stack running natively in Google Cloud with Google Cloud VMware Engine, without changes or re-architecture to tools, processes, or applications.

Healthcare organizations increasingly use cloud platforms to personalize patient care, analyze large datasets more effectively, enhance research and development collaboration, and share medical knowledge. Leveraging cloud platforms can also help healthcare organizations increase the privacy and security of information systems, including protected health information (PHI), and, as a result, better comply with applicable laws and regulations while reducing the burden of compliance. For PHI, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) set standards in the United States to protect individually identifiable health information. HIPAA applies to health plans, most healthcare providers, and healthcare clearinghouses that manage PHI electronically, and to persons or entities that perform certain functions on their behalf.

Customers have the ability to encrypt their virtual storage area network (vSAN) using an external key management server. Healthcare customers can run their workloads in a native VMware environment—vSphere, vCenter, vSAN, NSX-T, and HCX—while benefiting from Google Cloud’s highly performant infrastructure to meet the needs of their workloads. Customers can connect their VMware applications to native Google Cloud services such as BigQuery and artificial intelligence (AI) to derive new insights from existing data and quickly make informed decisions. 

Protecting against and mitigating the impact of ransomware attacks is top-of-mind for Healthcare organizations. This requires building a cyber resilience program and back-up strategy to prepare for how users can restore core systems or assets affected by a security (in this case, ransomware) incident. This is a critical function for supporting recovery timelines and lessening the impact of a cyber event so organizations can get back to operating their business.  Google Cloud VMware Engine in combination with Google Cloud first party solutions such as Actifio Go, or partner solutions such as NetApp CVO can provide an efficient way to recover incremental point-in-time backups along with on-demand provisioning of new compute to  recover both data and infrastructure from Ransomware attacks quickly and efficiently. 

Healthcare customers can also use Google Cloud VMware Engine as a disaster recovery (DR) target for their on-premises VMware workloads. Healthcare organizations also need a business continuity plan for their mission critical applications. When a disaster occurs, hospitals need their data protected so they can quickly get back to treating patients. It is a HIPAA requirement that healthcare organizations must be able to recover from a natural disaster. Google Cloud VMware Engine offers a like-for-like cost-effective DR target for these customers. The DR environment can be operated without new training using the same tools as their on-premises deployment. Google Cloud VMware Engine is currently available in 12 regions across the globe including three regions in the US, which means our regional and multi-national customers can take advantage of this service for geographic diversification as well.

AgroStar launched a multilingual mobile app using Google Cloud Platform that is helping to boost crop yields and increase income for small farmers in India.

AgroStar has launched a cloud-based mobile app that is helping to boost crop yields and encourage best practices for small farmers in India. Launched as an on-premises ecommerce platform selling farm tools in 2008, the firm turned to Google Cloud Platform (GCP) to expand its offering. It now uses cloud-based analytics and is deploying ML models to provide timely advice in five languages on everything from seed optimization, crop rotation, and soil nutrition to pest control.

2018 survey underscored the demand for agricultural planning for Indian farmers. While farming remains a dominant sector in India, employing half of its labor force, 70 percent of small farmers – those cultivating fewer than three acres – said their crops are damaged by unforeseen weather and pests. An even higher number – 74 percent – say they lack access to farming-related information.

Widening that gap is the relative lack of access to new, higher yield seeds and improved soil analyses for small farmers, who must otherwise rely on traditional methods. “It could take a few years for innovative information to trickle down from universities to small, grassroots farmers,” says Pritesh Gudge, AgroStar Software Engineer. “Today, just by clicking through our Android application, farmers learn about new, effective farming practices and receive advice customized to their crop and soil.”

Connecting a million farmers in the cloud

Operating in the Indian states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Orissa, Bihar, and Karnataka, AgroStar is closing the knowledge gap with a full-service, cloud-based SaaS solution – the only one of its kind in India. It combines agronomy, data science, and analytics to help farmers by providing a variety of resources.

AgroStar has reached over a million farmers through its Android app, the AgroStar Agri-Doctor. The mobile client is available as a web-based or full-featured native app. Both provide access to the firm’s knowledge base hosted on GCP, a Q&A forum that connects farmers to each other to help understand and better solve problems and to learn about innovative practices and products. Farmers can also click through to follow local and national market trends that help forecast crop prices.

In addition to the self-service knowledge base, AgroStar provides access to agronomy experts who use cloud-based analytics tools and historical data to provide season-and locale-specific advice to each farmer. “We are now tracking thousands of calls in 5 languages each day,” says Pritesh.

The AgroStar app also provides links to purchase and then track the delivery of farm tools and supplies such as cultivators and fertilizers. An in-house platform manages fulfillment centers and a doorstep delivery network simplifies the supply chain while giving farmers what they need, when they need it. By procuring directly from the manufacturers and primary distributors of farm supplies, Agrostar is achieving cost savings, which it passes on to farmers.

Build fast, pivot faster

From the start, the human and environmental variables of farming in India, not to mention the volume of AgroStar’s few hundred thousand monthly active users, made a highly scalable cloud-based solution inevitable. Farmers rely on the firm’s Agri-Doctor app to provide advice in multiple languages on topics that range widely throughout three growing seasons, each with distinct crop nutrition and rotation cycles and farm implementation requirements.

“For farmers, the focus keeps changing every month, and every season,” says Pritesh. “To serve our growing community, we needed a platform that could process images at high volume, fulfill tools and seed orders across thousands of miles, and respond to multilingual queries. We quickly moved away from spreadsheets and server-based solutions – we needed to build fast and pivot faster.”

Ending late-night deployments

The firm’s first cloud experience was with an AWS solution. At the time, AWS was the only cloud provider in India, but AgroStar wanted to find a solution that was easier to use and offered better integration with Android devices. “Deployment and processing costs were very high, and the developer tools and documentation were not as intuitive as we needed,” says Pritesh.

When GCP service arrived in India in October 2017, AgroStar embarked on a platform re-implementation that made possible dramatic changes in the way it developed and deployed its solution. Using Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) for crop advice management and Compute Engine for its production application services, the firm built the backend for the Agri-Doctor discussion forum in only three weeks. The platform’s microservice architecture is implemented in Python and Golang and deployed on GCP.

AgroStar began to realize significant efficiencies in its build, deploy, and test cycles. “We previously needed to work overnight to deploy to production,” says Pritesh. “Now using Google for Kubernetes containers and a rolling update strategy, we can deploy during the day without any problems or interruptions to service.”

The move to GCP streamlined AgroStar’s stack. “We were running 12 independent instances on AWS,” says Pritesh. “With Google Kubernetes Engine, we are deployed on a single cluster at a cost savings of $1,300 per month and growing.”

Improving customer response times by 85 percent

With a managed deployment capability, AgroStar can devote more time and resources to executing on its platform and Agri-Doctor app development plan. A strategic goal was managing customer response times as the firm grew its base. GCP has helped the firm meet that goal, achieving an 85 percent improvement in customer response times even as traffic grew significantly.

“With our on-premises solution, we could handle around 100 customers daily, which took 30 to 50 minutes for each customer,” says Pritesh. “We now handle thousands of customers daily, taking only 4 to 5 minutes for each one.”

AgroStar used Firebase to implement its Agri-Doctor app. A real-time cloud database, Firebase provides an API that enables the Agri-Doctor advice forum to be synchronized across all its far-flung mobile clients, effectively sharing knowledge base updates with one million users in near real time.

Using cloud tools to manage and monitor

Cloud Pub/Sub, Kafka, and Cloud Dataflow manage data ingestion and queueing of event and transaction data to the analytics layer. BigQuery fetches and persists data to Cloud StorageCloud SQL and dashboards powered by Tableau deliver farmer crop and soil profiles within minutes.

Cloud IAM helps AgroStar control access to all its cloud resources. And Stackdriver, the integrated logging aggregation capability for GCP, helps monitor and speed debugging on every tier of the AgroStar solution.

Machine learning to enhance yields

AgroStar is developing a variety of ML components to improve responsiveness and extend its platform offerings.

To speed up the diagnosis of and treatment for crop blight, AgroStar is building a deep learning pipeline using TensorFlow. The pipeline relies on GoogLeNet models that use multi-layered convolutional visual pattern recognition. It will assess uploaded images to support a disease-detection capability on the mobile app. Based on the commercially successful AI algorithms that automated postal code processing, GoogLeNet offers improved performance and computational efficiencies by using a creative layering technique that distinguishes them from older, sequential recognition engines.

To improve its customer search experience, AgroStar is developing an ML pipeline that shrinks fetch times by suggesting tags mapped to stored data. Processed using TPUs, Cloud Natural Language and Video AI, the tags provide a metadata layer that supports queries in any of the ten natural languages that AgroStar farmers can use.

The AgroStar search pipeline consists of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) models of Recurrent Neural Networks. Recurrent networks exhibit “memory” through iterative processing and are distinguished from feedforward networks by a feedback loop connected to their past decisions, ingesting their own outputs moment after moment as input.

Implementing a recommendation engine

The firm is also adapting the Random Forests TensorFlow AI model to develop a crop and product recommendation engine. The model is trained by consuming numerical (rainfall, humidity, water availability per acre) and categorical (soil type, water sources) parameters to suggest appropriate products by season, region, and locale.

To simplify the product suggestion experience, AgroStar developers are testing Cloud Dialogflow, the Google Cloud conversational interface, to build a chatbot capability into its mobile app. The bot will track a farmer’s crop schedules and answer simple questions by linking to the recommendation engine.

AgroStar is also extending its analytics platform with AI-powered sales planning and forecasting. Using linear regression models implemented in TensorFlow and powered by Cloud ML Engine, the capability will enhance supply chain logistics as the company scales its operations across India.

To provide a credit on-demand offering for a range of seed-to-harvest cycle products, AgroStar is attempting to use Vision API to create an AI model that will convert uploaded photos of customer application records into standard data formats. The firm’s credit policy features a grace period in which farmers begin paying back loans after harvested crops go to market.

A versatile and friendly development ecosystem

AgroStar credits the convivial tools and documentation that GCP offers and its incremental, pay-as-you-go pricing model for both the firm’s success and its ability to manage growth.

“What Google Cloud offers is extremely good documentation and extremely simple-to-use tools and interfaces across all services,” says Pritesh. “It helped us initially deploy our platform and at every scale that we have required since then, and its cost effectiveness enabled us to staff up to meet new feature milestones.”

Documents like payslips and W2s are crucial to processes such as employment and income verification for mortgage loans, personal loans, personal finance, and benefits processing. Unfortunately, efficiently extracting data from these documents at scale can be challenging and time-consuming, with many organizations relying on manual examination of documents or automated approaches that don’t adequately capture the document data needed for given tasks. Google Cloud built Document AI to remove these barriers, empowering customers to deploy powerful machine learning models to more quickly process documents, save money, and discover insights. We’re excited to expand Document AI’s capabilities with the recent release of improved pre-trained models for W2s and payslips, built on Document AI Workbench.

Pre-trained models let developers focus on core application logic and leave the complex task of information extraction from the documents to Google’s AI technology. In many cases, the primary driver for automated data extraction is operational efficiency and cost savings, but Document AI can also open new possibilities. For example, a financial services company might use Document AI to enable fully self-serve loan applications on mobile devices, helping the organization to differentiate itself with simple, fast customer experiences.

We’ve heard from customers that more granular entity extraction from W2 and payslip documents is particularly important, with organizations requiring support for a wider variety of layouts and formats. The recent launch of the stable release of these pretrained models addresses these requests.

Here is what is new with W2 parser:

  • The parser improves accuracy and entity specificity thanks to the ability to break down long entities such as addresses into fine-grained sub-entities like StreetAddressOrPostalBox, AdditionalStreetAddressOrPostalBox, City, State, and ZIP code.
  • It can handle a wider variation of W2 forms, including multi-copies (2,3,4-ups) issued by various payroll vendors. The model is not limited to specific tax years, which means it should be able to process W2 for 2022 or beyond provided there are not significant changes to the format.
  • It introduces eight new entities for Box 12 that represent both codes and values, enriching understanding of the various taxable and non-taxable components of the W2 recipient’s income.

Here is what is new with Payslip parser:

  • Bonus, commissions, holiday, overtime, regular pay, and vacation are now part of earning_item/earning_this_period and earning_item/earning_ytd. The parser captures types of earnings beyond those categories, and maps them to their respective earning rates, hours, and pay (both for the period and year-to-date). This helps in building a more detailed understanding of the components of the payslip recipient’s income
  • The parser now returns year-to-date and current-period taxes and deductions.
  • Direct deposits are linked to corresponding bank account numbers.
  • The parser now returns page numbers, state and federal tax exemptions, and filing statuses.

While these parsers have become more useful out of the box, with this release, the ability to uptrain makes them easy to modify as new needs arise. Uptraining lets developers further improve the accuracy of these models and extract additional fields with minimal development work. It also lets developers customize existing parsers to support new document types that are similar. For example, the parser is trained on U.S. data and could be uptrained to create a payslip parser for the U.K.

We’re pleased that parsers are already making a difference for customers. Bryan Jackson, CTO at lending automation firm Gateless, said, “High accuracy data extraction is critical to the success of our Smart Underwrite solution, and Document AI provided better results than competitors. Using the latest W2 & Payslip pretrained parsers, we saw a 48% increase in performance on pay stubs and a 15% performance improvement in W2s. The ability to easily uptrain models as new document variations are introduced ensures we continue to deliver optimal outcomes for our customers.”

Realizing full business value of First-Party data

Looker for Google Marketing Platform (GMP) provides marketers the power to unlock the value of their company’s first-party data to more effectively target audiences.  The Looker Blocks and Actions for GMP offer interactive data exploration, slices of data with built-in ML predictions and activation paths back to the GMP.  This strategic solution continues to evolve with the Looker Action for Google Ads (Customer Match), the Looker Action for Google Analytics (Data Import) and the Looker Block for Google Analytics 4 (GA4).

  • The Looker Action for Customer Match allows marketers to send segments and audiences based on first-party data directly into Google Ads. Reach users cross-device and across the web’s most powerful channels such as Display, Video, YouTube, and Gmail.  The entire process is performed within a single screen in Looker, and is able to be completed in a few minutes by a non-technical user. 
  • The Looker Action for Data Import can be used to enhance user segmentation and remarketing audiences in Google Analytics by taking advantage of user information accessible in Looker, such as in CRM systems or transactional data warehouses.
  • The Looker Block for Google Analytics 4 (GA4) expands the solution’s support with out-of-the-box dashboards and pre-baked BigQuery ML models for the newest version of Google Analytics.The Looker Block offers up reports with flexible configuration capabilities to unlock custom insights beyond the standard GA reporting. Customize audience segments, define custom goals to track and share these reports with teams who do not have access to the GA console.

From clinical notes to patient insights at scale

Taking a look at the Healthcare vertical, the Looker Healthcare NLP API Block serves as a critical bridge between existing care systems and applications hosted on Google Cloud providing a managed solution for storing and accessing healthcare data in Google Cloud. The Healthcare NLP API uses natural language models to extract healthcare information from medical text,  rapidly unlocking insights from unstructured medical text and providing medical providers with simplified access to intelligent insights.  Healthcare providers, payers, and pharma companies can quickly understand the context and relationships of medical concepts within the text, such as medications, procedures, conditions, clinical history, and begin to link this to other clinical data sources for downstream AI/ML.   

Specifically, the natural language processing (NLP) Patient View (pictured below) allows you to review a single selected patient of interest, surfacing their clinical notes history over time. It informs clinical diagnosis with family history insights, which is not currently captured in claims, and captures additional procedure coding for revenue cycle purposes.

The dashboard below shows the NLP Term View which allows users to focus on chosen medical terms across the entire patient population in the dataset so they can start to view trends and patterns across groups of patients.

This data can be used to:
