In 2020, we saw a massive leap in online grocery. Within a few weeks, the industry reached numbers that were unexpected for at least four more years. In a snap, what seemed like a relatively insignificant channel became one that grocery retailers simply couldn’t ignore and, what’s more, is likely to remain a norm.

Retailers trying to stay ahead of the curve have already started experimenting with methods like building warehouses and installing robots to fulfill the growing demand, but in-store picking has been and will continue to remain one of the primary methods of fulfilling online orders as it offers several advantages. First, it allows the use of existing infrastructure – large retailers already have geographically well-located outlets in major cities, which enables shorter lead time to delivery. Secondly, it allows retailers to stay flexible and move swiftly between in-store and online order fulfillment. And finally, it fits perfectly with the omnichannel approach to allow customers to shop wherever and however they want – click and collect, curbside pick-up, or inside brick-and-mortar stores.

Despite its many advantages, in-store picking is expensive and affects profitability in an already competitive space since the cost of picking is directly tied with hourly labor fees. Moreover, with labor being a major challenge to obtain and retain, every minute spent picking counts. However, there is an easy way to keep costs down – optimizing the picking process by ensuring product availability and reducing the need for substitution.

An average of 8% of products are not available on-shelf in stores at any given time. As a result, pickers waste much of their time hunting for products that simply aren’t on the shelf or are misplaced, or spend time looking for substitutes, further increasing the time and cost for picking. In fact, grocery pickers often claim that out-of-stock (OOS) occurrences are the main reason that slows down the picking process. Without these factors, pick rates could be two times faster. Since picking accounts for 50% of the fulfillment cost, it has a substantial impact on the order’s bottom line and often makes the difference between a loss-making and a profitable basket.

Maintaining on-shelf availability for the thousands of products in every store has always been a significant problem to solve. The shift to online ordering has made the availability issue even more significant as the shelf is also now the fulfillment center for the majority of online orders. For e-commerce, out of stocks present two major issues for retailers. First, the impact of out-of-stock items is even more noticeable for online shoppers as they do not select their own substitutions. Additionally, out-of-stocks cause inefficiencies in the item fulfillment process, which is already a costly and margin-diluting practice for retailers. The good news is that through a partnership between Trax and Google Cloud, and the power of Google Cloud’s AI/ML capabilities, these challenges are addressed. The granular, real-time data at scale to enable picking efficiency and the data transparency to unlock a better shopping experience are now a reality which benefits both shoppers and store associates.

Lending DocAI is now generally available and includes more specialized parsers for critical loan documents including paystubs, bank statements, and more. Procurement DocAI is also now generally available. This solution helps companies accelerate document processing for invoices, receipts, and other valuable documents in the procurement cycle. 

Automating data capture is helping our customers increase accuracy and also lower their procure-to-pay processing costs. We are continually expanding the types of documents Procurement DocAI can process—the latest is a utility parser for electric, water and other bills. One company that lives and breathes AI-enabled document management is AODocs. It uses Procurement DocAI to simplify invoice processing for enterprise customers and launched a new Gmail add-on, Invoice to Sheet, for SMB customers who just want to track their invoices in Google Sheets.

Integrate human review into ML predictions 

Next up is the general availability of Human-in-the-Loop AI, a new DocAI feature that will help companies achieve higher document processing accuracy with the assurance of human review. Adding human review can increase accuracy and help businesses interpret predictions using purpose-built tools to enable those reviews. 

Processing documents quickly and cost-effectively is important. But it’s often necessary to have a high level of assurance on data accuracy for compliance. CIOs and IT decision-makers need highly accurate ML predictions to fulfill compliance requirements, improve employee experience (e.g. less rework), and raise customer satisfaction (e.g. fewer data errors). Including human participation in ML processes allows AI and humans to work together for the best possible results.

Human-in-the-Loop AI provides the workflow to manage human review tasks and produces a percentage confidence score of how “sure” it is that the AI ingested the document correctly. Document AI extracts data from documents with ML, and when paired with Human-in-the-Loop AI, human reviewers are able to verify the data captured. This system is customizable, providing the flexibility to set different thresholds and assign individual groups of reviewers to various stages of the workflow. With Human-in-the-Loop AI, developers can choose trusted reviewers to assign to the task; these reviewers can be from within their own or partner organizations.

CCAI‘s newest product —CCAI Insights — reviews conversations support agents are having, finding and annotating the data with the important information, and identifying the calls that need review. We’ve partnered with the product teams at CCAI to build Looker’s Block for CCAI Insights, which sets you on the path to integrating the advanced insights into your first-party data in Looker, overlaying business data with the customer experience.

Businesses can better understand contact center experiences and take immediate action when necessary to make sure the most valuable customers receive the best service. 

Realizing full business value of First-Party data

Looker for Google Marketing Platform (GMP) provides marketers the power to unlock the value of their company’s first-party data to more effectively target audiences.  The Looker Blocks and Actions for GMP offer interactive data exploration, slices of data with built-in ML predictions and activation paths back to the GMP.  This strategic solution continues to evolve with the Looker Action for Google Ads (Customer Match), the Looker Action for Google Analytics (Data Import) and the Looker Block for Google Analytics 4 (GA4).

  • The Looker Action for Customer Match allows marketers to send segments and audiences based on first-party data directly into Google Ads. Reach users cross-device and across the web’s most powerful channels such as Display, Video, YouTube, and Gmail.  The entire process is performed within a single screen in Looker, and is able to be completed in a few minutes by a non-technical user. 
  • The Looker Action for Data Import can be used to enhance user segmentation and remarketing audiences in Google Analytics by taking advantage of user information accessible in Looker, such as in CRM systems or transactional data warehouses.
  • The Looker Block for Google Analytics 4 (GA4) expands the solution’s support with out-of-the-box dashboards and pre-baked BigQuery ML models for the newest version of Google Analytics.The Looker Block offers up reports with flexible configuration capabilities to unlock custom insights beyond the standard GA reporting. Customize audience segments, define custom goals to track and share these reports with teams who do not have access to the GA console.

From clinical notes to patient insights at scale

Taking a look at the Healthcare vertical, the Looker Healthcare NLP API Block serves as a critical bridge between existing care systems and applications hosted on Google Cloud providing a managed solution for storing and accessing healthcare data in Google Cloud. The Healthcare NLP API uses natural language models to extract healthcare information from medical text,  rapidly unlocking insights from unstructured medical text and providing medical providers with simplified access to intelligent insights.  Healthcare providers, payers, and pharma companies can quickly understand the context and relationships of medical concepts within the text, such as medications, procedures, conditions, clinical history, and begin to link this to other clinical data sources for downstream AI/ML.   

Specifically, the natural language processing (NLP) Patient View (pictured below) allows you to review a single selected patient of interest, surfacing their clinical notes history over time. It informs clinical diagnosis with family history insights, which is not currently captured in claims, and captures additional procedure coding for revenue cycle purposes.

The dashboard below shows the NLP Term View which allows users to focus on chosen medical terms across the entire patient population in the dataset so they can start to view trends and patterns across groups of patients.

This data can be used to: 

  • Enhance patient matching for clinical trials 
  • Identify re-purposed medications
  • Drive advancements for research in cancer and rare diseases

  • Build in minutes or hours. With access to Google’s no-code conversational and search tools powered by foundation models, organizations can get started with a few clicks and quickly build high-quality experiences that can be integrated into their applications and websites. 
  • Combine the power of foundation models with information retrieval to find relevant, personalized information. Enterprises can build apps that understand user intent via natural language, and surface the right information with associated citations and attributions from a company’s public and private data. They can also fully control what data their applications access and the content or topics they want to address.
  • Build multimodal apps that can respond with text, images, and other media. Gen App Builder supports not just text, but also other modalities such as images and videos. It allows developers to build apps using a combination of text and images as inputs to find information across documents, photos, and video content, enabling richer customer interactions.

Leave the Tax Filing to ML: Lending Doc AI’s Automation Classifying and Parsing IT Documents

Google Cloud's Lending Doc AI is a Document Understanding solution that is commonly used in mortgage lending industry for gathered data from unstructured documents and converting it in structured form. Imagine how this can change IT filing!

In the United States, Tax Season descends upon the country every April, requiring millions of Americans to spend hours deciphering cryptic documents and performing complex math just to figure out what they owe. Wouldn’t it be grand if there was a way for a computer to take all the relevant documents and extract out exactly what the IRS is looking for? Lending Document AI from Google Cloud supports common document types used for Income Tax Filing, such as W-2s and 1099s. These advancements in machine learning technology now makes it possible to alleviate some anxiety leading up to April 15th.

Lending Document AI is a Document Understanding solution that allows for classification and parsing of documents commonly used in the mortgage lending industry. The data in these unstructured files is then converted into a structured format, which can be stored in a database or used for analysis and calculations. You can read more about the product in the announcement blog post. For this tax filing use case, we will focus on automatically classifying and parsing the 2020 editions of the following forms:

1099-DIV

1099-INT

1099-MISC

1099-NEC

This sample application creates an automated pipeline where the user can bulk upload a collection of PDFs, the Lending Document Splitter & Classifier will classify each document and send each PDF to the appropriate specialized parser to extract the data, which can then be used to calculate an individual tax return and fill out a 1040 Form.

Let’s explore how this application works. You can check out the sample code in this GitHub Repository.

Here is an outline of the architecture of this application. As you can see, it utilizes Cloud Run and Firestore in Native Mode for the web application in addition to Document AI.

The User uploads multiple PDF files to the web application, hosted on Cloud Run.

An API call is made to the Lending Document Splitter & Classifier for each PDF file.

The output of the classifier (e.g. W-2, 1099-MISC, etc.) is then mapped to an appropriate specialized parser in the Google Cloud Project.

Each document file is sent to the appropriate specialized parser that matches the document type.

The entities are extracted by the parser processor and the data is written to Firestore.

The raw data is now retrieved from Firestore and displayed to the User showing the file classification and extracted values from each form.

The data values from all the forms are used together to calculate an individual income tax return.

The Calculated Tax Rates/Incomes/Deductions are displayed to the User in a Tabular Format matching the IRS Form 1040. The app also displays which form data was used for each field. (Some output fields use values from multiple forms, such as line 25b.)

Want to try this out for yourself? Here’s how you can deploy and run this application using a Google Cloud Project. You can run this in Cloud Shell (Quickstart) or on your local machine.

NOTE: The Lending Processors in this Demo are in Limited GA as of March 2022. If you have a business use case for these processors, you can fill out and submit the Document AI limited access customer request form.

Install dependencies

This demo currently supports the following Document Types (2020 Editions)

  1. Click “Upload” Button, wait for processing to complete.
    The page will display the steps completed for each document file. These are also written to stdout for troubleshooting purposes.

6. View the extracted values from each file.

7. Click “Calculate Taxes” to see the tax calculation output
