Apigee is committed to continually innovating new capabilities and solutions for our customers, and 2021 saw new product launches, partnerships, and best practices for managing your expanding range of business-critical use cases. Here are some of our favorite stories from 2021. 

Our State of API Economy 2021 Report surveyed over 700 IT leaders globally and identified five key API trends that emerged post-COVID. SaaS and hybrid cloud-based API deployments are increasing with half of all respondents reporting increases in these areas, and AI- and ML-powered API management is also gaining traction, with usage growing 230% year-over-year among Apigee customers. Business metrics like Net Promoter Score (NPS) and speed-to-market are API users’ preferred way to measure success, and API ecosystems are increasingly innovation drivers, with high-maturity organizations much more likely to focus on building a developer ecosystem or B2B partner ecosystem around their API. Finally, API security and governance is more important than ever, as research showed that increased investment in security and governance was a high priority. Launching new capabilities with Apigee X

We announced Apigee X, our next-generation platform that brings the powerful scale of Google technologies to Apigee API Management and allows enterprises to power API programs for enhanced scale, security, and automation. Apigee X customers can harness the capabilities of Cloud CDN to maximize the availability and performance of APIs across the globe, deploying across more than two dozen Google Cloud regions and enhancing caching at over 100 locations. Apigee X customers can apply solutions like Cloud Armor web application firewall for enhanced API security and Cloud Identity and Access Management (IAM) for authenticating and authorizing access to the Apigee platform. Apigee X also enhances automation by applying Google Cloud’s AI and ML capabilities to historical API metadata to detect anomalies, predict traffic, and ensure compliance. Making new connections with Apigee Integration

Apigee brought our successful API-first approach to integration this year with the release of Apigee Integration. This silo-busting solution lets customers connect existing data and applications, and surface them as easily accessible APIs. Apigee Integration brings together the best of API management and integration into one unified platform so IT teams can scale their operations, improve developer productivity, and increase the speed to market. The platform comes with built-in connectors to Salesforce, Cloud SQL (MySQL, PostgreSQL), Cloud Pub/Sub and BigQuery, with connectors for additional third-party applications and databases on their way. Bit Capital Rolls Out a Digital Financial Solution in Under 3 Months and at 2/3 the Cost

Bit Capital was established with a certain urgency to develop its platform. Google Cloud ensured it was able to build and go live with a solution in under three months, at a cost about two-thirds lower than other providers--and with a small team.

In the past few years, a series of new technologies and regulatory changes has been transforming Brazil’s financial industry. The concept of blockchain added security and agility to financial transactions. The open banking system being deployed by the country’s Central Bank (BC) allows for platform integration and data sharing -with the user’s consent- between financial institutions. Recently, the launch of Pix, also by the BC, has shaken the market by creating a new payment method that is instant, free for individuals and 24/7.

Since 2018, the startup Bit Capital has been working on the development of 100%-digital financial solutions in the cloud to help its clients adapt to this new scenario in a convenient way, without the need to build an infrastructure for that or hiring different providers. Pix was not the exception.

In less than 3 months, the team was able to build and go live with a solution that can be used by both direct participants (i.e. those with banking licenses granted by BC) and indirect participants (i.e. companies depending on direct participants to offer payments on Pix) through Bit Capital’s platform.

Besides this differential, Pix and the startup’s other solutions are based on blockchain and Google Cloud’s cloud, ensuring greater security, scalability and availability for customers and allowing for an easy integration between Bit Capital’s platform’s solutions and those from other companies.

A robust structure to handle Pix’s high demand

Bit Capital was established with a certain urgency to develop its platform. The idea was well-developed and customers were interested. The fast deployment of Google Cloud’s tools was one of the main factors that attracted the company to use it as a basis for its infrastructure.

“We managed to deliver everything we have today in Google Cloud with a small team. That was another challenge: being able to grow with a few people,” says Juliano Souza, the startup’s head of IT infrastructure. “We sought other cloud partners, but they had a steep curve. We chose Google Cloud because we needed quick, quality scaling.”

The same thing happened when they built the solution for Pix, despite the specific challenges involved. The BC had performance requirements that led the company to spend some time experimenting until they reached the best suite of tools to meet those requirements. The startup wanted to create a unique architecture that could help both large and small customers and be integrated to the platform’s other microservices.

With the support from Google Cloud’s team to answer doubts and make the best decisions, the solution was built in a few months, at a cost about two-thirds lower than other providers.

The solution’s architecture is based on apps running in Docker in Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), with interconnected microservices. The blockchain system runs on Compute Engine, its rows are managed in Pub/Sub and Dataflow, and persistent data, in Cloud SQLCloud Interconnect is used for the connection with BC. Cloud KMS and Secrets Management store the company’s pre-credentials. All of this is supported by Cloud Load Balancing for load balancing and autoscaling.

According to the team, GKE was essential for the solution’s success. Using infrastructure as code in the tool made uploading of a group of microservices significantly easier. Developers are able to help set up this environment, which has helped spread the DevOps culture in the team. Besides orchestrating and integrating apps, GKE also provides an elastic structure to handle demand peaks and visibility to monitor internal components.

Nowadays, the solution’s environment has 20 clusters with over 1,500 pods – 250GB in data per month, providing a robust structure to support a service involving periods of intense demand such as Black Friday.

Ease to monitor, fix and improve

Just 10 days after Pix’s official launch date, the company had its first test: Black Friday. This allowed a major e-commerce customer to test the scale and see the success of the architecture that had been built. “It worked great regarding what the cloud could deliver. And we found what we needed to fix very quickly. Operations [formerly Stackdriver], in particular Cloud Trace, showed us clearly what needed to be done to improve performance,” Souza explains.

Using Operations added reliability by putting deliveries into production. Checking Cloud Trace to see if there were any performance issues and the exact point where they were happening became routine for Bit Capital’s developers. Google Cloud’s security tools and Google Safety Center provided the resources needed to monitor and secure the environment, with automatic data encryption at rest and in transit.

“Google Cloud has security as a premise. When we upload any kind of component, like a database or a virtual machine, the drive is encrypted by default. With other providers, you must specify that you want it encrypted.

The easy service monitoring and management accelerates product and technology development because the team no longer needs to worry about infrastructure. Automated management allows professionals to spend more time on new projects and the company’s business. Also, the deployment of services in a Google Cloud multi-region impacts on customer experience, providing high availability for their solutions.

In the coming months, Bit Capital aims to ramp up service usage and the creation of new projects in Google Cloud by adding more customers to Pix’s solution and Banking as a Service (BaaS) solutions. Anthos will be incorporated to the tool suite to make it easier to connect apps with the customers’ on-prem environments. And the deployment of open banking has the potential to be a business driver for the company.

“We joke that we’re already doing open banking, because we have various connections with different providers, which allows us to offer an integrated solution,” says Francesco Miolo, the startup’s CFO. “With the arrival of the new regulations, something we are waiting for since we started out, we will be able, through our platform, to take our customers to the open finance ecosystem, enabling the development of disruptive business models.”

Swarovski’s Journey towards Online and Offline Conversion with Predictive Analytics

Luxury brand and leader in crystals and glass production, Swarovski has charmed customers with its exquisite collections for over 125 years. To understand their customers better and map their online behaviors, Swarovski had to overcome prediction hurdles as majority of the purchases are not frequent or habitual. They are mostly impulse buys or have no rational behind the purchase in order for the brand to accurately map customers’ interest and delight them with relevant personalization or website customization strategy.

Swarovski used a machine learning (ML) model to predict the most performing SKUs and list of products based on both online and offline indicators to target buyers. A score was assigned to each product in the list and was personalized at the country level that delivered relevant insights. Swarovski is aiming to expand the product listing page to personalize at customer level. In 2016, Macquarie launched a new digital banking experience that was based on empowering customers, creating personalized experiences, and developing intuitive technology. Macquarie had the opportunity to build its digital environment from the ground up and looked beyond financial services to digital companies leading in customer experiences.

Following the launch of its digital banking platform in 2016, Macquarie saw providing customers with a secure way to manage their own data as the logical next step. Macquarie looked to transform its existing technology capabilities into a modern architecture that complements the speed and agility demanded of its digital platform. The Apigee API Management Platform plays an important role in helping Macquarie deliver a highly secure and open digital platform.

“The capability to connect to various platforms with a digital, responsive, technology-agnostic platform is vital. As new digital services emerge, it’s important that our digital banking services are future compatible. The most important part of our approach isn’t what we are doing now but what our platform architecture will allow us to do in the future by creating more human experiences with technology that go beyond just banking,” says Rajay Rai, head of Digital Engineering & Applied Innovation, for Macquarie’s Banking and Financial Services group.

Because Macquarie’s banking platform is based on an open API architecture, it is able to grant controlled access to its business services, enabling others to use, innovate, and build on top of them while increasing the prospects of widespread adoption and developer stickiness.

Empowering the developer

“Macquarie’s strategy has been API-first as it has built and improved its digital capabilities, but it won’t be too long until this approach is superseded by citizen-developers-first,” Rajay says. “We believe that co-creation of value is essential because in the future, we won’t be owning the channels for distribution and engagement. In building a leading digital banking platform it’s important that developers are able to open the front door.”

Macquarie’s API strategy grants internal and external developers with access to its rich repository of APIs exposed via the new developer platform, Macquarie devXchange. With Macquarie devXchange, developers have readily available samples, a sandbox, and simplified connections to all of the bank’s services. Developers are able to test APIs and services through the Apigee platform.

“Not only does the platform provide frictionless access, but it’s also poised to modernize and simplify the way we engage the community beyond our own perimeters,” Rajay says. “The Apigee developer portal is helping us seize new opportunities; access has been democratized and it wouldn’t have been possible without APIs.”

Cloud migration

In order to meet future demand for computing capabilities, Macquarie decided to move to the cloud in order to enable an infrastructure with various configurations on demand. This has cut the provisioning time for Macquarie from months to minutes.

Macquarie has created full end-to-end environments on Kubernetes and can flow traffic to a whole new environment in seconds, encouraging experimentation and learning. This was made possible through the flexibility of APIs.

“APIs and microservices are a great match. Microservices with Apigee provide a powerful, agile ecosystem to form various services topologies and evolve services in an isolated manner. This helps us respond to the fast pace of digital innovation today,” Rajay says.

Empowering consumers

Macquarie’s approach is about delivering customers more personalized banking experiences that are driven by how they want to use their information.

“APIs have enabled us to co-create value with our partners, customers, and developers. You can’t live in isolation; open source tells you that,” Rajay says. “APIs have been vital for us and what we can deliver for our customers as we’ve built our leading digital platform.”

Existing learning platforms lack engagement

Outside of traditional education settings, massive open online learning courses (MOOCs)—often modeled after university courses—can provide a flexible and affordable way to upskill or reskill. But the vast majority of people who participate in MOOC programs fail to complete courses. Based on our research, the challenge with existing learning platforms is a lack of engagement, primarily caused by limited direction on which skills to learn, whether AI, fintech, blockchain, or other in-demand disciplines.   

We’ve also received feedback that many corporate learning management systems–developed as online training systems to upskill employees–tend to be poorly designed and time-consuming to use. 

Overall, a significant challenge with most existing learning platforms is that they’re generic. For example, suppose you’re interested in learning about AI. In that case, you need AI-related coursework that applies to your industry and the job you want because AI in medicine is vastly different from AI in financial services. Today’s online learning options typically take a one-size-fits-all approach and fail to capture the nuances of what learners really need to get ahead. 

Building a future-proof learning platform 

The commitment to highly personalized, accessible learning inspired KIMO.ai, a platform that we believe is the future of education. Depending on your goals, current skills, location, and other factors, our AI-based platform will identify which coursework (and where to find those classes) to build the skills you need. The more personalized, relevant learning recommendations even take into account people’s preferences for podcasts, MOOCs, books, articles, videos, courses, publications, and more.

Our platform started with one developer exploring NLP models and Google APIs. As we’ve grown our team and launched our beta to 110,000 users in developing markets, we discovered there is a lot of interest in our platform, and we believe we can make a significant impact. In feedback forums, we also learned that we need to focus our efforts on the mobile experience to improve engagement since 99% of the beta testers use mobile devices. 

Beyond our team’s high level of trust in Google Cloud solutions, our team also appreciates the cultural alignment with Google. We value Google’s developer-centric approach and rely on tools like Dataflow for batch data processing and Cloud TPU to reliably run machine learning models with AI services on Google Cloud. We also build all of our deployments on Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), which makes it easy to manage all our containerized workloads 

On the front end, Google App Engine makes it easy to deploy apps and experiment, and it integrates seamlessly with Firebase for authentication and more. BigQuery is our serverless data warehouse that efficiently scales to support the millions of articles, videos, and other learning resources we need to analyze to provide the targeted coursework recommendations our learners require.

As we grow our business having a network of trusted advisors is also extremely valuable. By working closely with DoIT International, the 2020 Google Cloud Global Reseller Partner of the Year, our team has access to their cloud, Kubernetes, and machine learning expertise. DoIT has already helped us quickly resolve IT issues and create analytics dashboards that give us insights to continually enhance our services. 

Building for a growing industry
