The Google Cloud Next 2021 was concluded on October 23rd along with a keynote by the CEO, Thomas Kurian. To catch up the quick recap on the event covering all the developments in the Google Cloud Data Analytics portfolio.

October 23rd (this past Saturday!) was my 4th Googlevarsery and we are wrapping an incredible Google Next 2021!

When I started in 2017, we had a dream of making BigQuery Intelligent Data Warehouse that would power every organization’s data driven digital transformation. 

This year at Next, It was amazing to see Google Cloud’s CEO, Thomas Kurian, kick off his keynote with CTO of WalMart, Suresh Kumar , talking about how his organization is giving its data the “BigQuery treatment”.

AS  I recap Next 2021 and  reflect on our amazing journey over the past 4 years, I’m so proud of the opportunity I’ve had to work with some of the world’s most innovative companies from Twitter to Walmart to Home Depot, Snap, Paypal and many others.   

So much of what we announced at Next is the result of years of hard work, persistence and commitment to delivering the best analytics experience for customers. 

I believe that one of the reasons why customers choose Google for data is because we have shown a strong alignment between our strategy and theirs and because we’ve been relentlessly delivering innovation at the speed they require. 

Unified Smart Analytics Platform 

Over the past 4 years our focus has been to build industries leading unified smart analytics platforms. BigQuery is at the heart of this vision and seamlessly integrates with all our other services. Customers can use BigQuery to query data in BigQuery Storage, Google Cloud Storage, AWS S3, Azure Blobstore, various databases like BigTable, Spanner, Cloud SQL etc. They can also use  any engine like Spark, Dataflow, Vertex AI with BigQuery. BigQuery automatically syncs all its metadata with Data Catalog and users can then run a Data Loss Prevention service to identify sensitive data and tag it. These tags can then be used to create access policies. 

In addition to Google services, all our partner products also integrate with BigQuery seamlessly. Some of the key partners highlighted at Next 21 included Data Ingestion (Fivetran, Informatica & Confluent), Data preparation (Trifacta, DBT),  Data Governance (Colibra), Data Science (Databricks, Dataiku) and BI (Tableau, PowerBI, Qlik etc).

Planet Scale analytics with BigQuery

BigQuery is an amazing platform and over the past 11 years we have continued to innovate in various aspects. Scalability has always been a huge differentiator for BigQuery. BigQuery has many customers with more than 100 petabytes of data and our largest customer is now approaching  an exabyte of data. Our large customers have run queries over trillions of rows. 

But scale for us is not just about storing or processing a lot of data. Scale is also how we can reach every organization in the world. This is the reason we launched BigQuery Sandbox which enables organizations to get started with BigQuery without a credit card. This has enabled us to reach tens of thousands of customers. Additionally to make it easy to get started with BigQuery we have built integrations with various Google tools like Firebase, Google Ads, Google Analytics 360, etc. 

Finally, to simplify adoption we now provide options for customers to choose whether they would like to pay per query, buy flat rate subscriptions or buy per second capacity. With our autoscaling capabilities we can provide customers best value by mixing flat rate subscription discounts with auto scaling with flex slots.

Intelligent Data Warehouse to empower every data analyst to become a data scientist

BigQuery ML is one of the  biggest innovations that we have brought to market over the past few years. Our vision is to make every data analyst a data scientist by democratizing Machine learning. 80% of time is spent in moving, prepping and transforming data for the ML platform. This also causes a huge data governance problem as now every data scientist has a copy of your most valuable data.  Our approach was very simple.  We asked:”what if we could bring ML to data rather than taking data to an ML engine?” 

That is how BigQuery ML was born. Simply write 2 lines of SQL code and create ML models. 

Over the past 4 years we have launched many models like regression, matrix factorization, anomaly detection, time series, XGboost, DNN etc. These  models are used by customers to solve complex  business problems simply from segmentation, recommendations, time series forecasting, package delivery estimation etc. The service is very popular: 80%+ of our top customers are using BigQueryML today.  When you consider that the average adoption rate of ML/AI is in the low 30%, 80% is a pretty good result!

We announced tighter integration of BQML with Vertex AI. Model explainability will provide the ability to explain the results of predictive ML classification and regression models by understanding how each feature contributes to the predicted result. Also users will be able to manage, compare and deploy BigQuery ML models in Vertex; leverage Vertex Pipelines to train and predict BigQuery ML models.

Real-time streaming analytics with BigQuery 

Customer expectations are changing and everyone wants everything in an instant: according to Gartner, by the end of 2024, 75% of enterprises will shift from piloting to operationalizing AI, driving a 5X increase in streaming data and analytics infrastructures.

The BigQuery’s storage engine is optimized for real-time streaming. BigQuery supports streaming ingestion of 10s of millions of events in real-time and there is no impact on query performance. Additionally customers  can use materialized views and BI Engine (which is now GA) on top of streaming data. We guarantee always fast, always fresh data. Our system automatically updates MVs and BI Engine. 

Many customers also use our PubSub service to collect real-time events and process these through Dataflow prior to ingesting into BigQuery. This is a streaming ETL pattern which is very popular. Last year,we announced PubSub Lite to  provide customers with a 90% lower price point and aTCO that is lower than any DIY Kafka deployment. 

We also announced Dataflow Prime, it is our next generation platform for Dataflow. Big Data processing platforms have only focused on horizontal scaling to optimize workloads. But we have seen new patterns and use cases like streaming AI where you may have a few steps in pipelines that perform data prep and then customers  have to run a GPU based model. Customers  want to use different sizes and shapes of machines to run these pipelines in the most optimum manner. This is exactly what Dataflow Prime does. It delivers vertical auto scaling with the right fitting for your pipelines. We believe this should lower costs for pipelines significantly.

With Datastream as our change data capture service (built on Alooma technology), we have solved the last key problem space for customers. We can automatically detect changes in your operational databases like MySQL, Postgres, Oracle etc and sync them in BigQuery.

Most importantly, all these products work seamlessly with each other through a set of templates. Our goal is to make this even more seamless over next year. 

Open Data Analytics with BigQuery

Google has always been a big believer in Open Source initiatives. Our customers love using various open source offerings like Spark, Flink, Presto, Airflow etc. With Dataproc & Composer our customers have been able to run various of these open source frameworks on GCP and leverage our scale, speed and security. Dataproc is a great service and delivers massive savings to customers moving from on-prem Hadoop environments. But customers want to focus on jobs and not clusters. 

That’s why we launched Dataproc Serverless Spark (GA) offering at Next 2021. This new service adheres to one of our key design principles we started with: make data simple.  

Just like with BigQuery, you can simply RUN QUERY. With Spark on Google Cloud, you simply RUN JOB.  ZDNet did a great piece on this.  I invite you to check it out!

Many of our customers are moving to Kubernetes and wanted to use that as the platform for Spark. Our upcoming Spark on GKE offering will give the ability to deploy spark workloads on existing Kubernetes clusters.  

But for me the most exciting capability we have is, the ability to run Spark directly on BigQuery Storage. BigQuery storage is highly optimized analytical storage. By running Spark directly on it, we again bring compute to data and avoid moving data to compute. 

BigSearch to power Log Analytics

We are bringing the power of Search to BigQuery. Customers already ingest massive amounts of log data into BigQuery and perform analytics on it. Our customers have been asking us for better support for native JSON and Search. At Next 21 we announced the upcoming availability of both these capabilities.

Fast cross column search will provide efficient indexing of structured, semi-structured and unstructured data. User friendly SQL functions let customers rapidly find data points without having to scan all the text in your table or even know which column the data resides in. 

This will be tightly integrated with native JSON, allowing customers to get BigQuery performance and storage optimizations on JSON as well as search on unstructured or constantly changing  data structures. 

Multi & Cross Cloud Analytics

Research on multi cloud adoption is unequivocal — 92% of businesses in 2021 report having a multi cloud strategy. We have always believed in providing customers choice to our customers and meeting them where they are. It was clear that all our customers wanted us to take our gems like BigQuery to other clouds as their data was distributed on different clouds. 

Additionally it was clear that customers wanted cross cloud analytics not multi-cloud solutions that can just run in different clouds. In short, see all their data with a single pane of glass, perform analysis on top of any data without worrying about where it is located, avoid egress costs and finally perform cross cloud analysis across datasets on different clouds.

With BigQuery Omni, we deliver on this vision, with a new way of analyzing data stored in multiple public clouds.  Unlike competitors, BigQuery Omni does not create silos across different clouds. BigQUery provides a single control plane that shows an analyst all data they have access to across all clouds. Analyst just writes the query and we send it to the right cloud across AWS, Azure or GCP to execute it locally. Hence no egress costs are incurred. 

We announced BQ Omni GA for both AWS and Azure at Google Next 21 and I’m really proud of the team for delivering on this vision.  Check out Vidya’s session and learn from Johnson and Johnson how they innovate in a multi-cloud world.

Geospatial Analytics with BigQuery and Earth Engine

We have partnered with our Google Geospatial team to deliver GIS functionality inside BigQuery over the years. At Next we announced that customers will be able to integrate Earth Engine with BigQuery, Google Cloud’s ML technologies, and Google Maps Platform. 

Think about all the scenarios and use-cases your team’s going to be able to enable sustainable sourcing, saving energy or understanding business risks.

BigQuery as a Data Exchange & Sharing Platform

BigQuery was built to be a sharing platform. Today we have 3000+ organizations sharing more than 250 petabytes of data across organizations. Google also brings more than 150 public datasets to be used across various use cases. In addition to this, we are also bringing some of the most unique datasets like Google Trends to BigQuery. This will enable organizations to understand in real-time trends and apply to their business problems.

I am super excited about the Analytics Hub Preview announcement. Analytics Hub will provide the ability for organizations to build private and public analytics exchanges. This will include data, insights, ML Models and visualizations. This is built on top of the industry leading security capabilities of BigQuery.

Breaking Data Silos

Data is distributed across various systems in the organization and making it easy to break the data silo and make all this data accessible to all is critical. I’m also particularly excited about the Migration Factory we’re building with Informatica and the work we are doing for data movement, intelligent data wrangling with players like Trifacta and FiveTran, with whom we share over 1,000 customers (and growing!).  Additionally we continue to deliver native Google service to help our customers. 

We acquired Cask in 2018 and launched our self service Data Integration service in Data Fusion. Now Fusion allows customers to create complex pipelines with just simple drag and drop. This year we focused on unlocking SAP data for our customers. We have launched various SAP connectors and accelerators to achieve this.

At GCP Next we also announced our BigQuery Migration service in preview. Many of our customers are migrating their legacy data warehouses and data lakes to BigQuery. BigQuery Migration Service provides end-to-end tools to simplify migrations for these customers. 

And today, to make migrations to BigQuery easier for even more customers, I am super excited to announce the acquisition of CompilerWorks. CompilerWorks’ Transpiler is designed from the ground up to facilitate SQL migration in the real world and will help our customers accelerate their migrations. It supports migrations from over 10 legacy enterprises data warehouses and we will be making it available as part of our BigQuery Migration service in the coming months.

Data Democratization with BigQuery

Over the past 4 years we have focused a lot on making it very  easy to derive actionable insights from data in BigQuery. Our priority has been to provide a strong ecosystem of partners that can provide you with great tools to achieve this but also deliver native Google capabilities. 

With our BI engine GA announcement which we introduced in 2019, previewed earlier this year and showcased with tools like Microsoft PowerBI and Tableau, is now available for all to play with.

BigQuery + Data Studio are like peanut butter and Jelly. They just work well together. We launched BI Engine first with Data Studio and scaled it to all the users. More than 40% of our BigQuery customers use Data Studio. Once we knew BI Engine works extremely well we now have made it an integral part of BigQuery API and launched it for all our internal and partner BI tools. 

We announced GA for BI Engine at Next 2021 but we were already GA with Data Studio for the past 2 years. We recently moved the Data Studio team back into Google Cloud making the partnership even stronger. If you have not used Data Studio, I encourage you to take a look and get started for free today here!! 

Connected Sheets for BigQuery is one of my favorite combinations. You can give every business user in your organization the ability to analyze billions of records using standard Google Sheets experience. I personally use it everyday to analyze all our product data. 

We acquired Looker in Feb 2020 with a vision of providing a semantic modeling layer to our customers with a governed BI solution. Looker is tightly integrated with BigQuery including BigQuery ML. Our latest partnership with Tableau where Tableau customers will soon be able to leverage Looker’s semantic model, enabling new levels of data governance while democratizing access to data. 

Finally, I have a dream that one day we will bring Google Assistant to your enterprise data. This is the vision of Data QnA. We are in early innings on this and we will continue to work hard to make this vision a reality. 

Intelligent Data Fabric to unify the platform

Another important trend that shaped our market is the Data Mesh.  Earlier this year, Starburst invited me to talk about this very topic. We have been working for years on this concept, and although we would love for all data to be neatly organized in one place, we know that our customers’ reality is that it is not (If you want to know more about this, read about my debate on this topic with Fivetran’s George Fraser, a16z’s Martin Casado and Databricks’ Ali Ghodsi).

Everything I’ve learned from customers over my years in this field is that they don’t just need a data catalog or a set of data quality and governance tools, they need an intelligent data fabric.  That is why we created Dataplex, whose general availability we announced at Next.

Dataplex enables customers to centrally manage, monitor, and govern data across data lakes, data warehouses, and data marts, while also ensuring data is securely accessible to a variety of analytics and data science tools.  It lets customers organize and manage data in a way that makes sense for their business, without data movement or duplication. It provides logical constructs – lakes, data zones, and assets – which enable customers to abstract away the underlying storage systems to build a foundation for setting policies around data access, security, lifecycle management, and so on.  Check out Prajakta Damle’s session and learn from Deutsche Bank how they are thinking about a unified data mesh across distributed data.

Analysts have recognized our momentum and, as I look back at this year, I couldn’t thank our customers and partners enough for the support they provided my team and I across our large Data Analytics portfolio: in March, Google BigQuery was named a Leader in The Forrester Wave™: Cloud Data Warehouse, Q1 2021.  And in June, Dataflow was named a Leader in The Forrester Wave™: Streaming Analytics, Q2 2021 report.

How to Migrate an Oracle Database to Google Cloud

As more enterprises migrate a growing number of workloads to the cloud, migrating databases, too, has become a key focus.

But migrating databases is also really tough. This is due to a number of different reasons.

The first one is that there’s a lot of proprietary technology and functionality that’s built into a lot of the legacy database technologies.

With Oracle, for example, that may be things like stored procedure, custom functions, Oracle RAC, so on and so forth.

This makes it really hard for database administrators to migrate to an equivalent cloud-native technology.

The second challenge is that historical on-prem databases are all quite monolithic.

These are humongous servers which don’t really fit into the cloud way of doing things.

So often, database administrators have to split these up into multiple servers in the cloud.

The third challenge, which a lot of companies underestimate, is the reliance of applications on databases.

Say, you are a company that’s been around for 10 to 15 years. As the business has grown, it’s added tens to hundreds of apps, both internal- and external-facing, that are all relying on the database.

So as you’re thinking about migration, it’s really important to consider the risks that are associated of migrating to different cloud technologies. Obviously, you would like to minimize your company’s exposure.

With that background, here are the steps, procedures, best practices, and how to solve the challenges associated with migrating on-premises Oracle databases to Google Cloud SQL PostgreSQL.

GCP Launches Datastream, A Serverless Change Data Capture and Replication Service

Explore GCP's Datastream, a serverless change data capture (CDC) and replication service that allows enterprises to synchronize data across databases, storage systems, and applications reliably and with minimal latency. The brand new service helps enterprises ease database replication and take advantage of the serverless architecture to create visibility into the shift in the data volume in real-time, allowing teams to focus on delivering timely insights instead of managing infrastructure. Read on further before you get started.

Today, we’re announcing Datastream, a serverless change data capture (CDC) and replication service, available now in preview. Datastream allows enterprises to synchronize data across heterogeneous databases, storage systems, and applications reliably and with minimal latency to support real-time analytics, database replication, and event-driven architectures. You can now easily and seamlessly deliver change streams from Oracle and MySQL databases into Google Cloud services such as BigQuery, Cloud SQL, Google Cloud Storage, and Cloud Spanner, saving time and resources and ensuring your data is accurate and up-to-date.

“Global companies are demanding change data capture to provide replication capabilities across disparate data sources, and provide a real-time source of streaming data for real-time analytics and business operations,” says Stewart Bond, Director, Data Integration and Intelligence Software Research at IDC.

However, companies are finding it difficult to realize these capabilities because commonly used data replication offerings are costly, cumbersome to set up, and require significant management and monitoring overhead to run flexibly or at scale. This leaves customers with a difficult-to-maintain and fragmented architecture. 

Datastream’s differentiated approach 

Datastream is taking on these challenges with a differentiated approach. Its serverless architecture seamlessly and transparently scales up or down as data volumes shift in real time, freeing teams to focus on delivering up-to-date insights instead of managing infrastructure. It also provides the streamlined customer experience, ease of use, and security that our customers have come to expect from Google Cloud, with private connectivity options built into the guided setup experience. 

Datastream integrates with purpose-built and extensible Dataflow templates to pull the change streams written to Cloud Storage, and create up-to-date replicated tables in BigQuery for analytics. It also leverages Dataflow templates to replicate and synchronize databases into Cloud SQL or Cloud Spanner for database migrations and hybrid cloud configurations. 

Datastream also powers a Google-native Oracle connector in Cloud Data Fusion’s new replication feature for easy ETL/ELT pipelining. And by delivering change streams directly into Cloud Storage, customers can leverage Datastream to implement modern, event-driven architectures.

Customers tell us about the benefits they’ve found using Datastream. That includes Schnuck Markets, Inc., “Leveraging Datastream, we’ve been able to replicate data from our on-premises databases to BigQuery reliably and with little impact to our production workloads. This new method replaced our batch processing and allowed for insights to be leveraged from BigQuery quicker,” says Caleb Carr, principal technologist from Schnuck Markets. “Furthermore, implementing Datastream removed the need for our analytics group to reference on-premises databases to do their work and support our business users.”

Cogeco Communications, Inc. used Datastream to also realize the value of low-latency data access. “Datastream unlocked new customer interaction opportunities not previously possible by enabling low-latency access in BigQuery to our operational Oracle data.” says Jean-Lou Dupont, Senior Director, Enterprise Architecture, Cogeco Communications, Inc. “This streamlined integration process brings data from hundreds of disparate Oracle tables into a unified data hub. Datastream enabled us to achieve this with 10X time and effort efficiency.”

In addition, Major League Baseball (MLB) used Datastream’s replication capabilities to migrate their data from Oracle to Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL. “As we’re modernizing our applications, replicating the database data reliably out of Oracle and into Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL is a critical component of that process,” says Shawn O’Rourke, manager of technology at MLB. “Using Datastream’s CDC capabilities, we were able to replicate our database securely and with low latency, resulting in minimal downtime to our application. We can now standardize on this process and repeat it for our next databases, regardless of scale.”

Our partner HCL has worked with many organizations looking to get more out of their data and plan for the future. “HCL customers across every industry are looking for ways to extract more value out of their vast amounts of data,” says Siva G. Subramanian, Global Head for Data & Analytics at HCL Google Business Unit. “CDC plays a big part in the solutions we offer to our customers using Google Cloud. Datastream enables us to deliver a secure and reliable solution to our customers that’s easy to set up and maintain. CDC is a key and integrated part of Google Cloud Data Solutions.”

“Google Cloud’s new CDC offering, Datastream, is a differentiator for Google among hyperscale cloud service providers, by supporting replication of data from Oracle and MySQL databases into the Google Cloud environment using a serverless cloud-native architecture, which removes the burden of infrastructure management for organizations, and provides elastic scalability to handle real-time workloads,” says Stewart Bond, Director, Data Integration and Intelligence Software Research at IDC.

Datastream under the hood

Datastream reads CDC events (inserts, updates, and deletes) from source databases, and writes those events with minimal latency to a data destination. It leverages the fact that each database source has its own CDC log—for MySQL it’s the binlog, for Oracle it’s LogMiner—which it uses for its own internal replication and consistency purposes. Using Google-native, agentless, high-scale log reader technology, Datastream can quickly and efficiently generate change streams populated by events based on the database’s CDC log while minimizing performance impact on the source database.

Each generated event includes the entire row of data from the database, with the data type and value of each column. The original source data types, whether it’s, for example, an Oracle NUMBER type or a MySQL NUMERIC type, are normalized into Datastream unified types. The unified types represent a lossless superset of all possible source types, and the normalization means data from different sources can easily be processed and queried downstream in a source-agnostic way. Should a downstream system need to know the original source data type, it can perform a quick API call to Datastream’s Schema Registry, which stores up-to-date, versioned schemas for every data source. This also allows for in-flight downstream schema drift resolution as source database schemas change. 

The generated streams of events, referred to as “change streams,” are then written as files, either in JSON or Avro format during preview or in other formats like Parquet in the future, into a Cloud Storage bucket organized by source table and event times. Files are rotated as table schemas change, so events in a single file always have the same schema, as well as on a configurable file size or rotation frequency setting. This way customers can find the best balance between the speed of data availability and the file size that makes the most sense for their business use case.

Through its integration with Dataflow, Datastream powers up-to-date, replicated tables for analytics over BigQuery, and for data replication and synchronization to Cloud SQL and Spanner. Datastream refers to these constantly updated tables as “materialized views.” They are kept up-to-date via Dataflow template-based upserts into Cloud SQL or Spanner, or through consolidations into BigQuery. The consolidations, performed as part of the Dataflow template, take the change streams that are written into a log table in BigQuery, and push those changes into a final table, which mirrors the table from the source.

Datastream offers a variety of secure connectivity methods to sources, so your data is always safe in transit. And with its serverless architecture, Datastream can scale up and down readers and processing power to seamlessly keep up with the speed of data and ensure minimal latency end to end. As data volumes decrease, Datastream automatically scales back down—the result is a “pay for what you use” pricing model, where you never have to pay for idle machines or worry about bottlenecks and delays during data peaks.

Get started with Datastream 

Datastream, now available in preview, supports streaming change data from Oracle and MySQL sources, hosted either on-premises or in the cloud, into Cloud Storage. You can start streaming your data today for $2 per GB of data processed by Datastream. 

To get started, head over to the Datastream area of your Google Cloud console, under Big Data, and click Create Stream. There you can:

  1. Initiate stream creation, and see what actions you need to take to set up your source and destination for successful streaming.
  2. Define your source and destination, whose connectivity information is saved as connection profiles you can re-use for other streams. Sources support multiple connectivity options, with both private and public connectivity options to suit your business needs.
  3. Select the source data you’d like to stream, and which you’d like to exclude.
  4. Test your stream to ensure it will be successful when you’re ready to go.

Start your stream and your database’s CDC data will start to flow to your Cloud Storage bucket! From there you can integrate with Dataflow templates to load data into BigQuery, Spanner, or Cloud SQL. HarbourBridge Schema Assistant Allows Quick, Bulk Migration to Cloud Spanner

Google Cloud announces the open-source HarbourBridge Schema Assistant for a guided schema-design workflow for migrating from MySQL or PostgreSQL to Cloud Spanner. Learn more.

Today we’re announcing the HarbourBridge Schema Assistant, which provides a guided schema-design workflow for migrating from MySQL or PostgreSQL to Spanner. HarbourBridge imports dump files (from mysqldump or pg_dump) or directly connects to your source database, and converts the source database schema to an equivalent Spanner schema. The new Schema Assistant capability displays the source schema and Spanner schema side-by-side, highlights errors and walks you through a series of steps to validate and optimize your Spanner schema. It also produces a browsable assessment report with an overall migration-fitness score for Spanner, a table-by-table detailed analysis of type mappings and a list of features used in the source database that aren’t supported by Spanner. It supports editing of table and column names, column types, primary keys and constraints, as well as dropping of tables, columns, foreign keys and secondary indexes.

The new Schema Assistant complements HarbourBridge’s existing data and schema migration capabilities and is a critical step towards our goal of building a complete open-source migration toolkit. HarbourBridge continues to support command-line schema and data migration and turn-key Spanner evaluation.

Complementing the bulk data migration capabilities of HarbourBridge, we are also announcing the ability to migrate change events from MySQL to Cloud Spanner.

HarborBridge takes your MySQL or PostgreSQL schema and translates it to a Spanner schema. It will provide you with a detailed report of all the changes and spanner fit scoes.

Supported Features in Schema Assistant

  1. Global type mapping. Users can customize the global mapping for how types should be mapped to Spanner consistently across the schema. For example, mapping large integers in source schema to Spanner’s NUMERIC.
  2. Local type mapping. Users can override the custom type mapping for a given table/column.
  3. Session management. A session keeps track of all the changes made to the schema mapping.
  4. Customization of secondary indexes. Users can add, edit and delete secondary indexes to optimize their Spanner performance.
  5. Customization of foreign keys and interleaved tables. Table interleaving is an important design consideration when migrating to Cloud Spanner as explained in more detail in this blog post.

Introducing three big releases that make the Dataflow faster, easier and accessible. With this major development, Team Google will be able to achieve its goal to democratize the power of big data, real time streaming, and ML/AI for all developers.

By the end of 2024, 75% of enterprises will shift from piloting to operationalizing artificial intelligence according to IDC, yet the growing complexity of data types, heterogeneous data stacks and programming languages make this a challenge for all data engineers. With the current economic climate, doing more with cheaper costs and higher efficiency have also become a key consideration for many organizations.

Today, we are pleased to announce three major releases that bring the power of Google Cloud’s Dataflow to more developers for expanded use cases and higher data processing workloads, while keeping the costs low, as part of our goal to democratize the power of big data, real time streaming, and ML/AI for all developers, everywhere.

The three big Dataflow releases we’re thrilled to announce in general availability are:

Dataflow Prime – Dataflow Prime takes the serverless, no-operation benefits of Dataflow to a totally new level. Dataflow Prime allows users to take advantage of both horizontal autoscaling (more machines) and vertical autoscaling (larger machines with more memory) automatically for your streaming data processing workloads, with batch coming in the near future. With Dataflow Prime, pipelines are more efficient, enabling you to apply the insights in real time.

Dataflow Go – Dataflow Go provides native support for Go, a rapidly growing programming language thanks to its flexibility, ease of use and differentiated concepts, for both batch and streaming data processing workloads. With Apache Beam’s unique multi-language model, Dataflow Go pipelines can leverage the well adopted, best-in-class performance provided by the wide range of Java I/O connectors with ML transforms and I/O connectors from Python coming soon.

Dataflow ML – Speaking of ML transforms, Dataflow now has added out of the box support for running PyTorch and scikit-learn models directly within the pipeline. The new RunInference transform enables simplicity by allowing models to be used in production pipelines with very little code. These features are in addition to Dataflow’s existing ML capabilities such as GPU support and the pre and post processing system for ML training, either directly or via frameworks such as Tensorflow Extended (TFX).

We’re so excited to make Dataflow even better. With the world’s only truly unified batch and streaming data processing model provided by Apache Beam, the wide support for ML frameworks, and the unique cross-language capabilities of the Beam model, Dataflow is becoming ever easier, faster, and more accessible for all data processing needs.

Editor’s note: Today we’re hearing from Ryan Mason, Director, Head of DTC Growth & Strategy, at alcoholic beverage firm, Constellation Brands on the company’s shift to Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) sales and how Google Cloud’s powerful technology stack helped with this transformation. 

It’s no secret that consumer businesses have been up-ended in a lasting manner after 18 months of the pandemic. Consumers have been forced to shop differently over the past year – and as a result, they’ve evolved to be more comfortable with online spending and have grown to expect a certain level of convenience. While the e-commerce share of consumer sales has grown steadily over the past decade, the pandemic was the catalyst for the famous “10 years of growth in 3 months” which many argue is here to stay. 

Facing this reality head-on,  we placed a new emphasis on Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) with our acquisition of Empathy Wines, a DTC-native wine brand that sells directly to consumers via e-commerce. To accelerate our innovation in the DTC space, we added headcount and new functions to the existing Empathy team and empowered the newly-minted DTC group to apply their digital commerce operating model across the rest of the wine and spirits portfolio, which includes Robert Mondavi WineryMeiomi WinesThe Prisoner Wine Company, High West Whiskey, and more. 

One pandemic and one year later, DTC sales have surged in the wine and spirits category with Constellation positioned as a leader armed with a unique and powerful cloud technology stack, best-in-class e-commerce user experiences, modernized fulfillment solutions, and data-driven growth marketing. 

Benefits of Going DTC 

report from McKinsey estimates that the strategic business shift to DTC has been accelerated by two years because of the pandemic and argues that consumer brands that want to thrive will need to aim for a 20% DTC business or higher, which is already taking shape in the market: Nike’s direct digital channels are on track to make up 21.5% of the total business by the end of 2021, up from 15.5% in the last fiscal year, and Adidas is aiming for 50% DTC by 2025. But outside of the clear revenue upside, the auxiliary benefits of going DTC are robust.

For Constellation Brands, each of these four pillars ring true, and our shift toward DTC is as much about margin accretion and revenue mix management as it is about consumer insights and data. The added complexities of the alcohol space add wrinkles to our DTC approach and manifest in many areas like consumer shopping preference, shipping and logistics hurdles, and more. In order to win share early and continue to lead the category, we recognized the need to harness the immense amount of first-party data to power impactful and actionable insights. 

Our DTC technology architecture has fostered a value chain that is completely digitized: website traffic, marketing expenditures, tasting room transactions, e-commerce transactions, logistics and fulfillment events, cost of goods sold (COGS) and margin profiles, etc. are recorded and stored in a data warehouse in real time.  For the first time, at any given moment, we can easily and deterministically answer complex business questions like “what is the age and gender distribution of my customers from Los Angeles who have purchased SKU X from Brand.com Y in the last 6 months? What is the cohort net promoter score? Did that increase after we introduced same-day shipping in this zip code? By how much?” 

The ability to answer these questions and understand the root causes allows us to stay nimble with product offerings and iterate marketing strategies at the speed of consumer preference. Further, it enables us to optimize our omnichannel presence in the same manner by leaning on DTC consumer insights to develop valuable strategies with key wholesale distribution partners and 3-Tier eCommerce partners like Drizly and Instacart. At its core, Constellation’s DTC practice is designed to be the consumer-centric “tip-of-the-spear” responsible for generating insights from which all sales channels, including wholesale, can benefit.

We have taken a modern approach to building a digital commerce technology stack, leveraging a hub-and-spoke model built around Shopify Plus and other key emergent technology providers like email provider Klaviyo, loyalty platform Yotpo, Net Promoter Score measurer Delighted, Customer Service module Gorgias, payments processor Stripe, event reservations platform Tock, and many more. For digital marketing and analytics, we use Google Cloud and Google Marketing Platform, which includes products like Analytics 360Tag Manager 360, and Search Ads 360.

To help gather, organize, and store all of the inbound data from the ecosystem, we partnered with SoundCommerce, a data processing platform for eCommerce businesses. Together with SoundCommerce, we are able to automate data ingestion from all endpoints into a central data warehouse in Google BigQuery. With BigQuery, our data team is able to break data silos and quickly analyze large volumes of data that help unlock actionable insights about our business.  BigQuery itself allows for out-of-the-box predictive analytics using SQL via BigQuery ML, and a key differentiator for us is that all Google Marketing Platform data is natively accessible for analysis within BigQuery. 

But data possession only addresses half of the opportunity: we needed a powerful and modern business intelligence platform to help make sense of the vast amounts of data flowing into the system. Core to the search was to find a partner that approached BI in a way that fit with our future-looking strategy.

Our DTC team relies on the accurate measurement of variable metrics like Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC), Customer Lifetime Value (CLV), Churn, and Net Promoter Score (NPS) as a bellwether of the health of the business and monitoring these figures on a daily basis is paramount to success. To enable us to keep an accurate pulse on strategic KPIs, we considered several incumbent BI platforms. Ultimately we selected Google Cloud’s Looker for a range of benefits that separated it from the rest of the pack.

From a vision perspective, in this particular case we felt Looker was most aligned with our belief that better decisions are made when everyone has access to accurate, up-to-date information. Looker allows us to realize that vision by surfacing data in a simple web-based interface that empowers everyone to take action with real-time data on critical commercial activities. Furthermore, Looker’s ability to automate and distribute formatted modules to a myriad of stakeholders on a regular cadence increases data literacy and business performance transparency.

From a product perspective, we chose Looker for it’s cloud offering, web-based interface, and  centralized, agile modeling layer that creates a trusted environment for all users to confidently interact with data — without any actual data extraction. While other BI tools have centralized semantic layers that require skilled IT resources, we’ve experienced that those can lead to bottlenecks and limited agility. With Looker’s semantic layer, LookML, our BI Team, led by Peter Donald, can easily build upon their SQL knowledge to add both a high degree of control as well as flexibility to our data model.  The fully browser-based development environment allows the data team to rapidly develop, test, and deploy code and is backed by robust and seamless Git source code management. 

In parallel, LookML empowers  business users to collaborate without the need for advanced SQL knowledge. Our data team curates interactive data experiences with Looker to help scale access and adoption. Business users can explore ad hoc analysis, create dashboards, and develop custom data experiences in the web-based environment to get the answers they need without relying on IT resources each time they have a new question, while also maintaining the confidence that the underlying data will always be accurate. This helps us meet our primary goal of providing all businesses users with the data access they need to monitor the pulse of key metrics in near real-time.

In short order, taking a modern and integrated approach to the DTC technology stack has delivered economic impact across the portfolio, helping our team understand and combat customer churn, increase conversion rates, and optimize the customer acquisition cost (CAC) and customer lifetime value (CLV) ratios. Perhaps most important is the benefit it can provide to the customer base. Mining customer data and consumer behavior generates data into what our customers are seeking, giving us insights to supply more, or less of it. For example, observing sales velocity and conversion rates by SKU or by region can help us better understand changes in customer taste profiles and fluctuations in demand, providing the foundation for a more powerful innovation pipeline and more effective sales and distribution tactics in wholesale. Our team has also been an early pilot tester for Looker’s new integration with Customer Match, which contributes to the virtuous cycle between data insight and data activation. In the future, our plan is to leverage this cycle to amplify the impact of Google Ads across Search, Shopping, and YouTube placements for the wine and spirits portfolio. 

The operational impact of Looker is also substantial: our team estimates that the number of hours needed to reach critical business decisions has been reduced by nearly 60%, boosting productivity and accelerating the daily operating rhythm. A thoughtfully curated technology stack together with a modern BI solution allows us to stay at the vanguard of the industry. While the DTC sales channel is not designed to surpass the core business of wholesale for Constellation in terms of size, the approach enables unparalleled insights and measurement abilities that will pay dividends for the entire business for years to come.
