Rubin Observatory Leverages Google Cloud to Power Astronomical Research

This week, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory is launching the first preview of its new Rubin Science Platform (RSP) for an initial cohort of astronomers. The observatory, which is located in Chile but managed by the U.S. National Science Foundation’s NOIRLab in Tucson, AZ and SLAC in California, is jointly funded by the NSF and the U.S. Department of Energy. The platform provides an easy-to-use interface to store and analyze the massive datasets of the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), which will survey a third of the sky each night for ten years, detecting billions of stars and galaxies, and millions of supernovae, variable stars, and small bodies in our Solar System.
The LSST datasets are unprecedented in size and complexity, and will be far too large for scientists to download to their personal computers for analysis. Instead, scientists will use the RSP to process, query, visualize, and analyze the LSST data archives through a mixture of web portal, notebook, and other virtual data analysis services. An initial launch with simulated data, called Data Preview 0, builds on the Rubin Observatory’s three-year partnership with Google to develop an Interim Data Facility (IDF) on Google Cloud to prototype hosting of the massive LSST dataset. This agreement marks the first time a cloud-based data facility has been used for an astronomy application of this magnitude.
Bringing the stars to the cloud
For Data Preview 0, the IDF leverages Cloud Storage, Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), and Compute Engine to provide the Rubin Observatory user community access to simulated LSST data in an early version of the RSP. The simulated data were developed over several years by the LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration to imitate five years of an LSST-like survey over 300 square degrees of the sky (about 1,500 times the area of the moon). The resulting images are very realistic: they have the same instrumental characteristics, such as pixel size and sensitivity to photons, that are expected from the Rubin Observatory’s LSST Camera, and they were processed with an early version of the LSST Science Pipelines that will eventually be used to process LSST data. “This will be the first time that these workloads have ever been hosted in a cloud environment. Researchers will have an opportunity to explore an early version of this platform,” says Ranpal Gill, senior manager and head of communications at the Rubin Observatory.
Broadening access for more researchers
Over 200 scientists and students with Rubin Observatory data rights were selected to participate in Data Preview 0 from a pool of applicants that represents a wide range of demographic criteria, regions, and experience level. Participants will be supported with resources such as tutorials, seminars, communication channels, and networking opportunities—and they will be free to pursue their own science at their own pace using the data in the RSP.
“The revolutionary nature of the future LSST dataset requires a commensurately innovative system for data access and analysis paired with robust support for scientists,” says Melissa Graham, lead community scientist for the Rubin Observatory and research scientist in the astronomy department at the University of Washington. “I’m personally excited to enhance my own skills by using the RSP’s tools for big data analysis, while also helping others to learn and to pursue their LSST-related science goals during Data Preview 0.”
At the same time, the fact that the RSP is hosted in the cloud provides researchers at smaller institutions access to state-of-the-art astronomy infrastructure that is comparable to that of the largest national research centers.
The launch benefits the observatory too: the development team can learn what researchers are interested in while also testing and debugging the platform. Graham says that “the platform is still in active development so researchers using it will be able to follow along in the progress, and provide feedback on ways that we can optimize the development of the tools.”
Next steps
The LSST aims to begin the ten-year survey in 2023-24 and expects it to include 500 petabytes of data. Through the cloud, Google aims to help make this extraordinary project scalable and accessible to researchers everywhere. To learn more about Data Preview 0, watch this video.

Hike: Processing Analytics Queries 20X Faster with Google Cloud Platform

After a seamless migration to Google Cloud Platform with CloudCover and Google Cloud Professional Services, Hike has reduced its costs by 20% and processed analytics queries 20 times faster than with its previous cloud provider. The business is also using AI and machine learning to enhance the experience provided by a new sticker-based messaging app, Hike Sticker Chat.
India is a market of opportunity for businesses that provide messaging apps to consumers. With more than 1.3 billion people, the country is the second most populous in the world. However, global messaging app providers face a robust market challenge from Hike, a home-grown internet and technology startup. Launched in 2012, Hike provides innovative products such as Hike Messenger and more recently the AI- and machine-learning-enabled Hike Sticker Chat, a service that enables young people in the country to express themselves through digital stickers.
The business says it understands the people of India and communication like no one else, while its mission is to reduce individuals’ dependency on the keyboard. To do this, Hike is building one of the largest repositories of AI and machine-learning-enabled stickers for Hike Sticker Chat. This messaging platform is, according to Hike, the only product of its type that enables conversations through stickers covering more than 40 languages and local dialects.

Founded by Kavin Bharti Mittal, the Delhi-based venture is backed by SoftBank, Tencent, Tiger Global, Foxconn, and Bharti. To date, Hike has raised $261 million in funding. In August 2016, Hike raised its Series D round of funding, led by Tencent and Foxconn, at a valuation of $1.4 billion. The business is one of the fastest Indian startups to achieve Unicorn status, doing so in less than four years.
Hike started operations on a multinational cloud service. However, as user numbers and usage grew, the business began exploring options to improve performance and stability, reduce costs, and cut administration loads. In particular, Hike wanted to reduce latency between cloud data centers.
Focus on product development
“We aimed to move away from a technology stack with single points of failure to a horizontally scaled, highly reliable, distributed systems and managed services environment that enabled us to focus on product development rather than operations,” says Aditya Gupta, Director, Engineering, Hike.
Hike then began exploring the opportunities presented by Google Cloud Platform. The business held a number of executive-level meetings with Google to understand the capabilities, roadmap, and track record of the cloud service. It then decided to proceed with a proof of concept with Google Cloud Premier Partner CloudCover.
The proof of concept revealed that when Cloud Load Balancing was operating, latency between the Google Cloud data center in Taiwan and Delhi, India, was less than the latency between the incumbent cloud provider’s data center and Delhi. Further, compute throughput was up to two times greater on Compute Engine than on the equivalent service, while Hike could complete more then 1 million connections on Compute Engine – up from 500,000 connections on the incumbent service.
Migrate to GCP
The success of the exercise prompted Hike to migrate its messaging app to Google Cloud Platform. “We chose Google Cloud Platform because of its very broad set of services and features,” explains Gupta. “In addition, Google’s innovation mindset and the richness of the partnership would allow us to be onboarded quickly to machine learning services such as Cloud Machine Learning Engine.”
The business called on Google Cloud Professional Services (Technical Account Management) to help ensure a seamless lift-and-shift migration over two months. Google Cloud Professional Services initially undertook a technical infrastructure kickoff to establish a foundation for architecture requirements such as identity and access management and security.
Google Cloud Professional Services team delivers smooth migration
Google Cloud Professional Services worked closely with Hike to map out and deliver the Google Cloud Platform architecture that would deliver the greatest value to the business. The Professional Services team also worked with Hike to resolve product and support queries quickly; provided project background for product and support teams; and organized project meetings and early adopter program access.
In addition, Professional Services team members worked on site at least once a week, coordinated external support during critical migration periods, and coordinated teams in five countries for a single, 17-hour migration marathon. Over 60 days, the business migrated 7,000 processor cores, running virtual machine instances used for messaging infrastructure and analytics, to Google Cloud Platform.
Throughout the exercise, Google Cloud Professional Services worked with CloudCover to educate the customers’ technology teams to achieve proficiency with Google Cloud Platform. The teams soon built up skills and knowledge of best practices and began applying them to the Google Cloud Platform environment.
The Hike Google Cloud Platform architecture comprises virtual machine instances running in Compute Engine; Cloud Storage for unified object storage; networking; a BigQuery analytics data warehouse; Cloud Dataflow to transform and enrich data; Cloud Load Balancing to distribute workloads to maximize efficiency; and Cloud Dataproc to run Hadoop clusters.
Hike is also stepping up its AI & machine learning capabilities. It uses Google Cloud Machine Learning Engine managed, distributed computing capabilities to train complex models on TensorFlow. This powers key use cases such as delightful local sticker recommendations on Hike Sticker Chat. Hike is also investing heavily on AI and machine learning research.
Hike has achieved a range of benefits from its Google Cloud Platform deployment. As well as reduced latency, improved compute throughput, and increased connection handling, Google Cloud Platform managed services have enabled the business to reduce the time and effort required to administer core infrastructure, with the saved resources allocated to improving its messaging product.
“Managed services are beginning to reduce our operational overheads,” says Gupta. “For example, managed instance groups and Cloud Load Balancing are reducing our instance count and costs, thereby reducing involvement from DevOps and developer teams.”
Google Cloud Platform 20% cheaper
Gupta and his team have calculated that running for three years on Google Cloud Platform will cost, including the cost of migration, 20 percent less than on its previous platform. BigQuery is processing queries 20 times faster than a similar service offered by the previous provider, while storing 125TB of data and streaming 1.5TB of data daily. Furthermore, Hike’s analytics pipeline costs 80 percent less than in its previous environment.
“Google Cloud Platform has played an important role in enabling us to continue to innovate and realize our mission of reducing dependency on the keyboard,” says Gupta.

Led by the Global Big Data & AI organization under Vodafone Commercial, the platform will use the latest Google technology to enable the next generation of AI use cases, such as optimizing customer experiences, customer loyalty, and product recommendations.
Vodafone’s Commercial team has long focused on advancing its AI and ML capabilities to drive business results. Yet as demand grows, it is easier said than done to embed AI and ML into the fabric of the organization and rapidly build and deploy ML use cases at scale in a highly regulated industry. Accomplishing this task means not only having the right platform infrastructure, but also developing new skills, ways of working, and processes.
Having made meaningful strides in extracting value from data by moving it into a single source of truth on Google Cloud, Vodafone had already significantly increased efficiency, reduced data costs, and improved data quality. This enabled a plethora of use cases that generate business value using analytics and data science. The next step was building industrial scale ML capability, capable of handling thousands of ML models a day across 18+ countries, while streamlining data science processes and keeping up with technological growth.
Knowing they had to do something drastically different to scale successfully, along came the idea for AI Booster.
“To maximize business value at pace and scale, our vision was to enable fast creation and horizontal / vertical scaling of use cases in an automated, standardized manner. To do this, 18 months ago we set out to build a next-generation AI / ML platform based on new Google technology, some of which hadn’t even been announced yet.
“We knew it wouldn’t be easy. People said, ‘Shoot for the stars and you might get off the ground…’ Today, we’re really proud that AI Booster is truly taking off, and went live in almost double the markets we had originally planned. Together, we’ve used the best possible ML Ops tools and created Vodafone’s “AI Booster Platform” to make data scientists’ lives easier, maximise value and take co-creation and scaling of use cases globally to another level,” says Cornelia Schaurecker, Global Group Director for Big Data & AI at Vodafone.
AI Booster: a scalable, unified ML platform built entirely on Google Cloud
Google’s Vertex AI lets customers build, deploy, and scale ML models faster, with pre-trained and custom tooling within a unified platform. Built upon Vertex AI, Vodafone’s AI Booster is a fully managed cloud-native platform that integrates seamlessly with Vodafone’s Neuron platform, a data ocean built on Google Cloud.
“As a technology platform, we’re incredibly proud of building a cutting-edge MLOps platform based on best-in-class Google Cloud architecture with in-built automation, scalability and security. The result is we’re delivering more value from data science, while embedding reliability engineering principles throughout,” comments Ashish Vijayvargia, Analytics Product Lead at Vodafone
Indeed, while Vertex AI is at the core of the platform, it’s much more than that. With tools like Cloud Build and Artifact Registry for CI/CD, and Cloud Functions for automatically triggering Vertex Pipelines, automation is at the heart of driving efficiency and reducing operational overhead and deployment times. Today, users simply complete an online form, and then, within minutes, receive a fully functional AI Booster environment with all the right guardrails, controls, and approvals.
Not long ago it could take months to move a model from a proof of concept (PoC) to launching live in production. By focusing on ML operations (MLOps), the entire ML journey is now more cost-effective, faster, and flexible, all without compromising security. PoC-to-production can now be as little as four weeks, an 80% reduction.
Diving a bit deeper, Vodafone’s AI Booster Product Manager, Sebastian Mathalikunnel, summarizes key features of the platform: “Our overarching vision was a single ML platform-as-a-service that scales horizontally (business use cases across markets) and vertically (from PoC to Production). For this, we needed innovative solutions to make it both technically and commercially feasible. Selecting a few highlights, we:
- completely automated ML lifecycle compliance activities (drift / skew detection, explainability, auditability, etc.) via reusable pipelines, containers, and managed services;
- embedded security by design into the heart of the platform;
- capitalized on Google-native ML tooling using BQML, AutoML, Vertex AI and others;
- accelerated adoption through standardized and embedded ML templates.”
For the last point, Datatonic, a Google Cloud data and AI partner, was instrumental in building reusable MLOps Turbo Templates, a reference implementation of Vertex Pipelines, to accelerate building a production-ready MLOps solution on Google Cloud.
“Our team is devoted to solving complex challenges with data and AI, in a scalable way. From the start, we knew the extent of change Vodafone was embarking on with AI Booster. Through this open-source codebase, we’ve created a common standard for deploying ML models at scale on Google Cloud. The benefit to one data scientist alone is significant, so scaling this across hundreds of data scientists can really change the business,” says Jamie Curtis, Datatonic’s Practice Lead for MLOps.
Reimagining the data scientist & machine learning engineer experience
With the new technology platform in place, driving adoption across geographies and markets is the next challenge. The technology and process changes have a considerable impact on people’s roles, learning, and ways of working. For data scientists, non-core work now is supported by machines in the background—literally at the click of a button. They can spend time doing what they do best and discovering new tools to help them do the job.
With AI Booster, data scientists and ML engineers have already started to drive greater value and collaborate on innovative solutions. Supported by instructor-led and on-demand learning paths with Google Cloud, AI Booster is also shaping a culture of experimentation and learning.
