Ways to Manage Extensions on Windows and Mac If You Haven’t Moved to Chrome Browser Cloud Management

Chrome Insider series has detailed insights for enterprises that are yet to explore Chrome Browser Cloud Management to audit and manage installed extensions. This time, they list out 3 options used for managing extensions through Group policy.

Many enterprises are looking to better manage extensions on their corporate devices. Extensions themselves are a great tool for productivity and customization of Chrome. However, some extensions can have the potential for far reaching rights to sites your users visit and devices they browse from, giving IT the desire to closely manage which extensions are in their environment and how they behave. 

In an earlier post in this series, we’ve detailed how Chrome Browser Cloud Management is the easiest way to audit installed extensions and manage them. However, some enterprises may need to still use Group Policy on Windows or plists on Mac to manage extensions. So lets touch on management through those methods, for organizations that haven’t quite made the move to Chrome Browser Cloud Management yet. 

For starters, here are some of the most used options for managing extensions (some also apply to apps) via Windows Group Policy or via Plists on Macs:

Installing or allowing extensions

Blocking extensions

  • Extension Install Block List: These are the extensions that you will not allow to be installed. If they are installed already, they will be disabled. If a user tries to install them, it will be blocked. In the Chrome web store, the Add to Chrome button will be red and advise the user that the extension can’t be installed. 
  • Block External Extensions: This setting will block extensions from external sources being installed. An example of this is if an installed application is adding an extension to Chrome via the registry, this setting will block that extension from loading. 

Advanced management options

  • Extensions Settings: This policy provides a varied amount of functionality and requires a JSON script to be created and formatted in a single line string. This setting can be complex. We recommend using Chrome Browser Cloud Management as almost all of the functionality is included without needing to write JSON as well as the ability to audit installed extensions. If you do want to use this policy, it is covered in detail in the Managing Extensions in your Enterprise technical document. Some of the functionality that you can use within this policy are:
    • Install types: (Allowed, Blocked, Force Installed, Normal Installed) 
      • You can also display a custom message when the extension is blocked via the blocked installed message function.
    • Prevent extensions from altering websites: You can prevent all or specific extensions from running on specific websites. 
    • Managing by permissions: You can allow or block extensions by the specific rights or “permissions” that they require to run. 
      • This provides a baseline of functionality that you will or will not allow extensions to run on your users machines. 
      • If an extension is updated, bought, sold and updates the permissions that it requires, this will dynamically protect your users from permissions that you will not allow. 

Even if you decide that on-premises policy management is how you want to manage extensions long term, you can still use Chrome Browser Cloud Management to get much needed visibility into extensions that may exist in your environment. The newly improved apps and extension list is a great way to get a view of your current extension landscape, giving you more data to make better decisions around extension management.

You can enroll browsers to see this information, but still set policy through your existing tools if that’s your preference.

As the saying goes, “it’s hard to make predictions, especially about the future.” Some organizations find it challenging to predict what cloud resources they’ll need in months or years ahead. Every organization is on its own unique cloud journey. To help, we’re developing new ways for customers to consume and pay for Google Cloud services. We’re doing this by removing barriers to entry, aligning cost to consumption and providing contractual and product flexibility. Read on to learn how we’re rolling out several new go-to-market programs across these key areas to help our customers purchase and consume Google Cloud services more easily.

Removing barriers to entry with Google Cloud Flex Agreements

Many customers choose multi-year commitments because they provide better line-of-sight into IT spend and budgeting. However, these commitments can create difficulty for those who don’t have clear visibility into their future cloud consumption needs. That’s why today we’re launching Flex Agreements, which enable customers to migrate their workloads to the cloud with no up-front commitments. As part of this new licensing option, Google Cloud customers still get access to unique incentives, such as monthly spend discounts1, committed use discounts, cloud credits, and access to professional services, based on monthly spend and workloads migrated to Google Cloud.

Flex Agreements are just one example of how we are removing barriers to help customers start using Google Cloud. In 2022, we launched the Innovators Plus annual subscription, which gives developers a curated toolkit to accelerate their expertise, including access to live and on-demand training through Google Cloud Skills Boost, Google Cloud credits, and more. 

We also recently expanded trials for Google Cloud products. For example, the new Spanner free trial instance is good for 90 days, allowing developers to create Google Standard SQL or PostgreSQL databases, explore Spanner capabilities, and prototype applications—with no commitment or contract needed. 

Contractual and feature flexibility  

Contractual flexibility has always been one of our core principles. Committed Use Discounts (CUDs), for example, provide discounted prices in exchange for a commitment to use a minimum level of resources for a specified term. Last year, we introduced Flexible CUD, spend-based commitments that offer predictable and simple flat-rate discounts that apply across multiple virtual machine families and regions.

In addition to contractual flexibility, our customers also need the flexibility to choose features and functionality based on their stages of cloud adoption and the complexity of their business requirements. Therefore, over the next few quarters, we will launch new product pricing editions—Standard, Enterprise, and Enterprise Plus—in parts of our cloud portfolio. This new commercial packaging model will help give customers more choice and flexibility to optimize their cloud spend.

For customers running workloads such as those in regulated industries like banking and public sector, the higher-end Enterprise Plus tier will offer compute, storage, networking and analytics services with high availability, multi-region support, regional failover and disaster recovery, advanced security, and a broad range of regulatory compliance support. The Enterprise pricing tier will include a broad range of features designed for customers with workloads that demand a high level of scalability, flexibility, and reliability. The Standard pricing tier will offer cost-efficient and easy-to-use managed services that include all essential capabilities such as autoscaling to meet the core workload requirements of customers.

Align costs to consumption with autoscaling

At Google Cloud, a core requirement for the products we build is providing customers industry-leading capabilities to automatically scale (autoscale) services up and down to match capacity with real-time demand. Autoscaling improves uptime, reduces infrastructure costs, and removes the operational burden of managing resources.  

Many Google Cloud products include autoscaling capabilities to help customers manage unplanned variations in demand. For example, Dataflow vertical and horizontal autoscaling, in combination with granular adaptive resource configuration (aka “right-fitting”), has resulted in up to 50% saving in infrastructure costs for streaming by automatically choosing the right number of instances required to run the jobs and dynamically re-allocating more or fewer instances during the runtime of jobs. Bigtable also provides native autoscaling capabilities, and Spanner’s autoscale is an open source tool that works across regional and multi-regional Spanner deployments. 

Similarly, we added multiple features such as Cluster Autoscaler, Horizontal Pod Autoscaling, Vertical Pod Autoscaling, and Node Auto-Provisioning to GKE for elasticity and cost efficiency. 

For L.L.Bean, the ability to quickly scale capacity to meet changing usage patterns (e.g., during the holidays), as well as to rapidly perform load tests to test capacity, are “night and day” with Google Cloud compared to L.L.Bean’s legacy on-premises IT system.

We are now taking these capabilities to the next level by enabling autoscaling in BigQuery at a more granular level so you never pay more than what you use. This allows you to provision additional capacity in smaller increments, so you never overprovision and overpay for underutilized capacity. BigQuery customers can now try the new BigQuery autoscaler (currently in public preview) in their Google Cloud console.

From the day we launched, our promise has always been to complete every task given to us within one hour. Google Maps Platform empowers us to fulfil this promise. We understand the importance of selecting a reliable mapping service from the get-go. After exploring different map products, we made the decision to go with Google Maps Platform due to its detailed and accurate location mapping system. With the support of our partner Searce, we’ve been able to quickly integrate all the relevant products on our platform and optimize our API calls.

On a day-to-day basis, our roadies rely on the Places API to navigate their journeys. It pinpoints the exact location set by customers so that our roadies can be sure they arrive at the correct destination. With so many small roads and alleys in Malaysia, it can be challenging to find the exact place based on an address. Dropping a pin on a specific location removes any confusion.

Because we price our services based on distance, it’s business critical to determine the exact distance of a location and the most efficient route to reach it. By automating that process with the Distance Matrix API, we can guarantee that customers don’t get overcharged, while making sure that we’re adequately compensated for our services.

Improving the user experience

At the end of the day, we want to make people’s lives easier. That’s why having an app that is intuitive is key. More than that, we want customers to be able to create a request as quickly as possible. By automatically completing the location a customer is typing after they’ve keyed in the first few characters, Place Autocomplete does that job for us.

As a fairly young company, we’ve got a long way to go. I believe that we’ll continue evolving alongside Google Maps Platform and exploring the new features it has to offer. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) is the UK’s largest animal welfare charity. Each year, it finds new homes for more than 50,000 animals in need.

With Slides and Chromebox, rescue centre managers can quickly and easily create promotional screens to display in their reception areas showcasing animals that need new owners. And the slides can be pushed simultaneously to RSPCA charity shop screens to help ensure the best chance of finding the animals loving new homes.

“Every time a supporter puts a pound in one of our collection tins, they want it to be spent wisely,” says Billie. “By streamlining our services with Google Apps for Work, we make sure that more of that money serves the animals who need it.”

Our solutions help businesses safely leverage their data and get a complete 360-degree view of their customers’ information, which can often be scattered across multiple systems (CRM, lending, credit, etc.).
